Where in Brno There are a number of interesting concerts coming up this September. First of all, local blues legend, Jan Fic, who is, incidentally, also the owner and chief luthier at Red Bird Instruments, will be at Kabinet Muz (15th).

Back to Life, Back to Reality Traditionally in the minds of Czech children, students and teachers, September marks the end of the summer and the dreaded return to school, a fate worse than “no wifi at the cottage.” But for the rest of us, thankfully, September means a return to cooler temperatures and a hotter social life. The clubs and pubs are operating as normal, the roadworks have eased off a touch, sports clubs and gyms have their regular schedules and of course the concerts are back inside the clubs and under cover of night. launching their latest album. Autumn in Brno also means it’s Jazzfest time. My pick of the autumn’s jazz offerings is Bill Frisell at Sono Centrum (28th). A legendary jazz guitarist, who’s weird and wonderful collection of guitars and effects never ceases to amaze, but it’s his playing - the creative, gentle jazz musings that really capture the imagination. Fully recommended. September also sees the return of Serial Killer, Brno’s festival of television and web series (21st to 26 th). The festival, which is a show-case of the world’s most interesting, innovative and engaging television and web series, will

take place at Husa Na Provázku and online, check www.serialkiller.tv for details. Burčak. On Náměstí Svobody (26 th – 29 th), there will be the annual Celebration of Wine festival, including the oft-explosive Burčak. Those of you new to Brno, may not have come across this Czech phenomenon. Eager to taste the new wines as the wine mash ferments, Czech winemakers have taken to bottling off the fermenting must after only a few weeks of maturation. This cloudy mixture with it’s rich, pungently sweet flavour is a Moravian specialty, which has reputed health benefits when taken in small doses. It’s still fairly low in alcohol, but care should still be taken as the results can be explosive as well as delicious.
