Dear Editor Are you as confused as I am? I am referring to rule 12h Dangerous play (pony or player hit at close quarters). While I understand polo welfare is paramount, if a player has the ball between him and the goal, and wants to shoot for goal or hit towards it, but the opposition is in front of him (blocking) he is in a quandary. More so the poor umpire. He has to decide whether the hitter who hits the ball is A) Has he slowed down B) Hit the ball too hard C) How close is the man in front (is he blocking)? What if the hitter does a big shot that passes over the heads of the opponents? No foul? Or does a big shot and hits pony or player? Foul? Of course it has always been a foul to do a full blooded swing / hit whilst in a melee, and rightly so. I know players and umpires are divided and confused about this issue. Some clarification to all would be welcome. Lavinia Black Editor’s Note: If you have some light to shed on Lavinia’s conundrum, then please email your answer or insight to editorial@ polotimes.co.uk
