As I put pen to paper, I can scarcely believe this is our August issue of Polo Times, 2022 seems to be hurtling along at an incredible pace, with just four more issues left for this year; if only there was a pause button so we could enjoy these summer months just a little longer before the steady march into winter begins. The English polo season is in full swing, reflected in the cornucopia of Reports and action from all levels; the Victor Ludorum series covers everything from 4 to 22 goal and this issue’s update spans seven pages – an impressive reflection of the polo being played across England at every level. Grassroots polo in this country is so important as a nurturing environment for our young talent of tomorrow, as highlighted by the inclusion of not one but two mid-teen English players in this year’s Cowdray Gold Cup Final, with Louis Hine and Josh Hyde both taking to the podium to celebrate Andrey Borodin’s Park Place’s first ever win in this historic trophy. The hot weather and heatwave of the past few weeks seemed to take the country by surprise, despite the scientists’ foreboding warnings for many years of the impact of climate change on our temperate climes, and after an initially shaky start, it was fantastic to see the ponies provided with shaded pony lines, designated cooling down walkers and extra wash off provisions. With extreme weather such as this scheduled to become more regular, it is encouraging to see pony (and player) welfare quite rightly taking a front seat. With the summer holidays in full swing and travel chaos on all fronts, with escape by air, port and train seemingly more and more difficult, I am thankful that there is so much beauty to explore on our Emerald Isle and of course, plenty of polo to enjoy of an afternoon. So, kick back, relax and enjoy catching up on everything we have to offer in this packed August issue.

Dear Editor Are you as confused as I am? I am referring to rule 12h Dangerous play (pony or player hit at close quarters). While I understand polo welfare is paramount, if a player has the ball between him and the goal, and wants to shoot for goal or hit towards it, but the opposition is in front of him (blocking) he is in a quandary. More so the poor umpire. He has to decide whether the hitter who hits the ball is A) Has he slowed down B) Hit the ball too hard C) How close is the man in front (is he blocking)? What if the hitter does a big shot that passes over the heads of the opponents? No foul? Or does a big shot and hits pony or player? Foul? Of course it has always been a foul to do a full blooded swing / hit whilst in a melee, and rightly so. I know players and umpires are divided and confused about this issue. Some clarification to all would be welcome. Lavinia Black Editor’s Note: If you have some light to shed on Lavinia’s conundrum, then please email your answer or insight to editorial@ polotimes.co.uk

Phoenician Trophy 2011, Oliver Browne, Gary Shepherd, Max Charlton & James Beim
How did you get involved in polo? I started playing at Inglesham when I was at Radley. I left Radley in 2000 and I continued playing at Inglesham while I was studying at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester (which I moved to from Newcastle to be closer to). I became great friends with Roddy Williams and his family who really got me going and who sold me my first horse, Picallili. When I graduated I went to work with Henry Brett. We had a business offering horses for rent and sale, lessons, polo holidays in Argentina. We owned the Royal County of Berkshire Polo School at RCBPC for a period of time also. While working for Henry Brett, I met Gary Shepherd whom I ended up working for full time. I played many seasons at Guards Polo Club with him, playing in and managing his team, The First Group. Our best year was 2011, when we won 44 of 47 games played including five Finals, including two on the same weekend; The 8 goal Town and County on the Saturday and the 12 goal Duke of Wellington on the Sunday beating a combined 32 teams. We were unbeaten in the 12 goal that year, also taking The Phoenician Trophy. Max Charlton was a bandit off 4 goals, I was 2 and we had www.polotimes.co.uk
True Summit Adventures James Beim off 7. It After winning was a brilliant time. We the Noman Barcelona won “Most Successful to Ibiza race Team of the Season” that in Ibiza, July year also. It was great. 2021 I was also a Member at Cowdray Park Polo Club that season, where I played for Tom Swerling, another ‘home grown’ patron from the polo school I had with Henry. I remember winning a 4 goal Final at Cowdray with Tom in the morning and an 8 goal Final at Guards with Gary on the same day. That was special and my late father, who was a big supporter of mine, came in the car with me for the day. We had fun. Gary and Tom were great to me and both remain close friends. I did nearly 10 years at Guards. My last season was 2014. Last year, a horse I produced and sold to Max Charlton won Best Playing Pony in The Royal Windsor, so that was a nice bonus and trip down memory lane. Maybe I sold her too cheap, but a few of the big guns tried her and didn’t want her, but she was the best horse I had, Jeanie was her name. A bay mare by Elusive Quality I bought in Yorkshire off a great guy called Olly Yeo who had got her started. Since then, I have worked (with varying degrees of success) in finance, but recently I have decided to focus full time on my adventures. What is your interest/ background in adventure business? I started climbing in 2017. I wanted to celebrate two years tee total (now over five years) with a physical challenge, so climbed Kilimanjaro and fell in love with high altitude mountaineering. I climbed many of the European classics including Mont Blanc and Grand Paradiso. In 2021, I spent three months in Ecuador climbing exclusively, summiting many 5000ers and the 6,000er in good style. My favourite mountain there is Antisana for its technical complexity, altitude gain from the basecamp and material risks. I also climbed Illiniza Sur via the ice climbing route which was fun – ice climbing above 5,000m! I never thought I would get as much pleasure from anything as polo. I don’t think climbing is better than polo, they’re different. Lower cadence also, but the feeling is more deep-felt joy as opposed to the adrenaline fuelled pleasure I got from polo. Regardless of that argument, I feel very grateful to have been involved in two phenomenal sports and I am excited to see where I can take the climbing. The 8,000ers (mountains above 8000m) are my main goal and the raison d’etre behind everything else. Certainly, if you loved polo and are looking for a new challenge or something to do alongside polo, I can recommend climbing and high altitude trekking wholeheartedly. www.polotimes.co.uk
Why did you want to set up an adventure business? From Ecuador I went to Nepal for Everest. The expedition was amazing, but I didn’t summit. 2021 was very challenging with Covid and bad weather. Only 14 of 40 members reached the summit which was very poor – something was amiss as this included several elite climbers. Kilian Jornet was in the tent next to me. We lost two people to ‘exhaustion’ which was sobering. Whatever people say about climbing Everest, it is still a wild place. All this while I was in touch with Paul Oberschneider, who had been a medium and high goal patron for many years in the UK, US and Argentina, owning La Golondrina there. In October I took him and some guys who work for him to the Cairngorms on a climbing trip. My plan was to pitch him this real estate deal I had been working on, but before I could start he said, “Whatever you are working on, drop it and focus on climbing.” The following week I was in the Lake District working on the Mountain Leader qualification which I got in April. Henry Brett was another guy who pushed me to follow this dream, he even helped fund the Everest ascent. Sometimes you need people like this to push you through the door so to speak. Now here I am running an Adventure business! I was encouraged to do so by Paul and Henry. I thought, well, I’m working in finance without much joy, and my goal is to make enough money to go to the mountains. So, I thought let’s just remove one of those steps and go straight to the mountains and take other people with me to share the magic with them. Climbing is transformational. It really is the greatest thing and is in many ways a metaphor for life. There is struggle, elation, despair, etc and the lessons you learn you can apply throughout your life – endurance, patience, empathy, collaboration etc. Tell us a bit more about your adventure business? We are called True Summit Adventures. The ‘true summit’ is a long held debate in mountaineering over where the actual top is. Most famously in the case of Manaslu people climbed to the commercial or foresummit. They claimed a summit but it wasn’t the true summit. The true summit was some 5m higher along an exposed ridge so at some point commercial operators said, let’s just climb to here and call that the summit! The true summit is the actual top but it’s also your best self and your best effort. I am interested in what this can mean to people and what they can take from it. We started in March this year. I am based in London.
Feature
The focus is on high altitude stuff – climbing and trekking, but I am going to offer horse bound adventures also, starting in Argentina, but with the idea to add Botswana and Mongolia. I hope Henry will be a guide. Not only is he a great horseman, he is one of the greatest story tellers I have ever met. Endurance cycling will be another thing we offer. The first big trip was this summer to Kilimanjaro. Paul came with his son Christian who plays at Beaufort Polo Club. Christain is a serious athlete and has a big future in climbing and polo. We also had the legendary James McBride who owns the Nihi resort in Sumba where they host the British Polo Day, Indonesia. He started playing polo in South Africa but has done polo in more places than possibly anyone I have ever met. A true gentleman and a legend. The other polo player was Harry Zurcher from Costa Rica. He and his father have 100 horses there! I am looking forward to visiting. Who can enjoy True Summit Adventures? We are doing everything and everyone. Families – we had two father-son combos on Kilimanjaro (which might just be the best family bonding trip out there), individuals, people that want to push themselves, groups (I have a Birthday trip to the Alps coming up soon for a client), for corporates we do a weekend in the Lake District or Cairngorms. You name it and I can take them or design an adventure for them. I can even see a time when we have clients going for 8,000ers in conjunction with my Nepali partners. How much would a trip cost? With such a variety of adventures on offer the prices range from trip to trip, but as an example Kilimanjaro is $3000 (excluding flights) for a seven day ascent. What trips do you have coming up? I am focusing on the Atlantic row at the moment and the training takes up a lot of time. I train for two hours minimum a day. I am going to Chamonix soon for one of my personal projects, a solo single day ascent of Mont Blanc from Les Houches and back in one push, no lift or train. It will take 16 to 18 hours and is 8,000m of vertical. Later in the summer I have some client trips in Europe and then next year we start in Ecuador in February with some high altitude climbing. Then it’s on to Nepal for Everest Basecamp treks and also a Lobuche (6,300m) ascent. I will try to go for Everest again (sponsors most welcome). Then it’s back to Tanzania for Kilimanjaro in June and on we go. We will keep adding trips as long as people want to take them! Josh Hyde attacks the ball full gallop
ndrey Borodin’s Park Place burst into action from the very first seconds of The Gold Cup played on the iconic Cowdray Lawns in front of massive crowds. They held the upper hand throughout the Final against the power of Dubai; to finally clinch victory 12-9 in their first ever Gold Cup win, but the three goal margin of the final result, does not reflect the drama of the final minutes of the match. Tense does not describe it!
“The three goal margin of the final result does not reflect the drama of the final minutes of the match” Cowdray had done a great job – the place was packed, the trade village and bars were doing a roaring trade with live music and everybody enjoying the sunshine (but not too hot, despite the heatwave) and horse welfare concerns addressed with covered marquees, misters and fans; it was a stupendous display of all things good in polo. The match itself was fast but fair, with clean play and great umpiring resulting in open, flowing action. A thumbs up all round from us! On paper, Park Place were the underdogs, despite having world number one, Facundo Pieres heading up the impressive line-up. Pieres already had five Gold Cup wins to his name (for La Bamba de Areco in 2009, Zacara in 2013 and King Power Foxes in 2015, King Power in 2016 and 2017) and it goes without saying he was keen to rack up a sixth. So, it was somewhat surprisingly Park Place had endured a rocky road to the Final – in fact they were defeated by Dubai in the qualifiers 17-14 and suffered defeat at the hands of Talandracas (later beating them in the Semi Finals).

The Cowdray Gold Cup for The British Open Polo Championship
Whilst Park Place have never before won The Gold Cup, Dubai are certainly no strangers to victory in this tournament, having won the tournament five times previously, most recently with the then 16-year-old Camilo ‘Jeta’ Castagnola claiming victory for them in extra-time in 2019. Whether under-dogs or tipped to win, both of these teams are powerhouses of the UK polo circuit bristling with the best that money can buy: be that players, ponies, tactical advice or backroom support. Both had something to prove and in the packed grandstands, expectation was high for a standout contest. We were not to be disappointed.
“Both of these teams are powerhouses of the UK polo circuit bristling with the best that money can buy” The match started with Dubai having a goal advantage on the scoreboard due to handicap difference (the clue is in the name as British Open means any total handicap can be entered) but Park Place made short work of this with Fran Elizade and Facundo Pieres finding the posts in the opening couple of minutes. If Dubai thought they had to watch just these older, more experienced players, Louis Hine put paid to this, coolly scoring a goal with time to spare to bring the first chukka score 4-1 to Park Place’s advantage. Hine won the tournament with Thai last year and seemed at ease in this year’s Final, showcasing great horsemanship and intuitive, flowing polo. Two wins of The Gold Cup at still only 16-years-old? One to watch for sure, he’s certainly dangerous, but in a good way! But back to the match – Park Place definitely looked in control, their play carefully avoiding Castagnola, but the question was how long could they keep it up? It turned out not for long as Dubai fought back with the second chukka evenstevens at four apiece. Frenetic activity in the third saw it still tight with Park Place just one goal up 7-6 going into half-time, but still looking in control. No doubt Lolo Castagnola (former 10 goaler and father of Jeta) had something to say at half-time. As commentator Karl Ude-Martinez succinctly put it, “Lolo is the General in the players’ tent and these boys out here are his foot soldiers”. But whatever he said to his troops it did not have the desired effect as Park Place outmanoeuvred Dubai, notching up three more goals after the interval resulting in a 10-6 lead for Park Place at the end of the fourth chukka. Then something shifted and Dubai started to claw their way back towards the podium, in fast, open, end-to-end thrilling 18

play with Castagnola and Matt Perry scoring to bring the end of the fifth chukka too close to call at 10-8 still in favour of Park Place. As the sixth and final chukka whistle sounded, spectators were expecting a slam dunk as Castagnola teed up a 40 yard penalty – which incredibly he missed. What? It was a pivotal moment. But Park Place’s relief was short lived as 35-year-old, threetime Argentine Open winner Pieres missed a goal, but Castagnola did not, slotting one home to bring it so close at 10-9 with just minutes to go. The young Castagnola gained possession, running to goal nearly the whole length of the field, effortlessly striking the ball boldly towards goal. Everybody assumed that would be the goal to draw the match and an extra-time battle would ensue. It was a dead cert surely? But even this young phenomenon has nerves it seems, as incredibly Castagnola missed. Dubai were

still fighting but Park Place further added insult to injury by scoring another two in quick succession with the final score of 12-9 in Park Place’s favour, so clinching their first ever Gold Cup win. Screams of pure joy could be heard from the Park Place team tent as a crowd surrounded the presentation area. With both the teams at the podium, The Hon Emily Pearson, daughter of Lord Cowdray, presented the glittering Gold Cup trophy to Park Place team captain, Facundo Pieres and patron, Andrey Borodin.

“What a day! What a match! What a great day for young players” at back, both shutting the door in defence and opening it wide open too in attack and richly deserving his sixth Gold Cup win. Josh Hyde – son of arena 10 goal player Chris – was strong and dependable, subbing for Park Place patron Andrey Borodin and stayed out of trouble, adding value when needed and getting a couple of unlucky close shots to goal; whist young Louis Hine was more than impressive. As a team they played fluidly, cohesively and coolly. Truly a master class in skilled, whistle-free polo and a joy to behold. Dubai were nearly good enough. But not, as they say, quite good enough when the chips were down. Despite Castagnola scoring five goals, it was not his usual scorched earth performance as he was effectively shut down (often by steely marking from Hine) and overall clever Park Place tactics and cool heads from the boys in blue won the day. No doubt Dubai will be back next year looking for that elusive sixth Gold Cup victory. What a day! What a match! What a great day for young players. All in all? Great stuff.

The Access Bank Day
T
he pandemic had forced Guards Polo Club’s banking partner to postpone their hugely popular annual event for two successive years, so this year’s Access Bank Day was particularly important. The first match of the day was a contest featuring Malcomines and Delaney for The Khalifa Cup. Damian Duncan’s Delaney team won this match 7-6 thanks to a winning goal off the stick of Marcos Araya in the final 30 seconds of the game. The Access Bank Cup which traditionally mixes patrons and some of the biggest names of the game currently playing in the UK resulted in a win for Access Bank. They defeated Fifth Chukker 6-5 on The Queen’s Ground. Ali Albwardy, founder of the Desert Palm Polo Club in Dubai and patron of the Dubai high-goal team, stepped forward to receive the trophy from HH The 14th Emir of Kano, Sanusi, Lamide Sanusi and HRH The Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed N Bamalli. Ali, who had scored the majority of his team’s goals, also received the Best Playing Pony prize for Jasmine, whom he had played in the first and third chukkas. Ali’s team-mate, and Access Bank Day regular, Adamu Atta was also impressive in this match, delivering some strong runs to goal. The Most Valuable Player prize went to Fifth Chukker’s Ryk Neethling. Ryk has only been playing polo since lockdown but put in a sterling performance in this match. His sporting prowess should not be a surprise though as this South African is an Olympic gold medalwinning swimmer! Undoubtedly the biggest winner of the day was UNICEF, with over $1.7 million raised during the afternoon. This money will go towards a raft of over 100 new and equipped classroom blocks in the disadvantaged areas of Nigeria, another part of Access Bank/Fifth Chukker’s impressive fundraising initiatives across Africa.

The British Beach Polo Championships are set against the stunning backdrop of Sandbanks
022 saw The British Beach Polo Championships, also known as Sandpolo, celebrate its 15th anniversary on the sun-soaked beach in Sandbanks, Dorset over 9 – 10 July. We’re not quite sure how he does it, but every year Johnny Wheeler manages to time the weekend of beach polo perfectly with the weather, providing the 8,000 attendees with wall-to-wall sunshine to enjoy the two day tournament. This year saw Whispering Angel return to retain their title, battling it out against Singha in the beach arena. Whispering Angel’s Hazel
Jackson excelled on the sand and managed to secure themselves a 19-11 victory to take the British Beach Polo Championships crown for the second year in a row. Johnny Wheeler, Sandpolo founder commented, “This was a magnificent 15th year at Sandbanks and evidence that a day on the beach watching polo with friends, family and colleagues and then dancing the night away is an incredible experience. The players, sponsors and supporters have made it a wonderful summer ‘go to’ event.” The British Beach Polo Championships return in 2023 on 7 –8 July.

Black Bears’ Guy Schwarzenbach lifted the mighty Indian Empire Shield on Saturday 16 July on the Castle Ground at Guards Polo Club after a thrilling, seven chukka Final against Emlor Black. Black Bears and Emlor Black were firing on all cylinders from the first whistle, with Black Bears taking an early 2-0 lead, however by the end of the first chukka Richard Tyrone converted a penalty and Juan Ambroggio scored to bring the scores level. The evenly matched sides continued to leave the scores within a whisker of each other throughout, tying several times, with the tension increasing in the second half as both sides tried to gain some meaningful advantage on the scoreboard. Three minutes into the sixth chukka, James McCarthy levelled the scores, 6-6, and some great defensive play from Tyrone stopped Black Bears from finding the flags; as the tension rose and the seconds ticked down, José Araya picked up the ball and

fired it through the posts, but the whistle had already blown and the goal was disallowed, which pushed the riveting Final into a 6th chukka. In extra-time, there was plenty of fast play, including a terrific rideoff between Tyrone and Fewster which thrilled the spectators but failed to reveal a winner, so the goals were widened and a seventh chukka began. Emlor Black were the first team to put a goal through, again from the stick of Araya and the team started to
congratulate each other but heartbreakingly for Emlor Black the goal was disallowed. Just a minute or two later Guy Schwarzenbach made the most of the opportunity of being unmarked and hit a big shot to win The Indian Empire Shield, 7-6. Araya received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony award for Pire Blanca Nieves who he played in the third, fifth and seventh chukkas and Jimbo Fewster was named Most Valuable Player. On the sunny afternoon of Sunday 10 July two teams took to the Number 1 Ground at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club to battle it out for the prestigious Eduardo Moore Trophy. The tournament is a tribute to Eduardo ‘Gordo’ Moore who was a legendary polo player in the 60s, 70s and 80s, reaching 10 goals in the UK and 9 goals in Argentina. Chris McKenzie was the first to get a goal on the scoreboard for Jolly Roger King of Polo but Max Charlton quickly retaliated. The pair of 6 goalers flew around, ably assisted by their teams, both putting the ball between the posts several times and after the second chukka the scoreboard read 4-3 in favour of Emlor. In the third however, Jolly Roger slowly pulled into the lead, with Ollie Cork scoring two phenomenal goals and McKenzie getting another two. The half time score was 7-6 in favour of Jolly Roger. Emlor were not going to give up easily though, some excellent teamwork enabled them to get within 1 goal of their opposition by the end of the fourth. A nail-biting final chukka had the crowd on the edge of their seats as the teams gave it everything they had and, as the final hooter sounded, Emlor and Jolly

Roger were 9 goals apiece meaning an extra chukka. After nearly six tense minutes of exciting play and near misses, Charlton, cool and calm, slotted away a 60 yard penalty to make McCarthy’s team, Emlor, the 2022 Eduardo Moore champions! McKenzie was deservedly named Most Valuable Player and Max Charlton’s Skinny, a 10-year-old Australian Thoroughbred mare, was the Best Playing Pony.

It was one more goal and a penalty that saw the match swing in the favour of Vampire Bats 2.0 who took the win, 7-6. The Archie David Cup is the UK’s most competitive 8 goal tournament, with 32 teams vying for their place in this year’s Final. Major Archie David was a founding player at Smith’s Lawn and was known for generously lending his own ponies to those Army officers who did not have adequate horsepower; the tournament was named in memory of him following his death in 1971. With such strong team entries, players cannot afford to have an off day with the competitive polo providing a great spectacle. For those teams who do not reach the Final, there is still the chance to take home The Caterham Cup in the Subsidiary Final or for those teams knocked out in the early stages

With huge crowds on the Sunday, The Westerby Assam Cup Final gave the spectators some nail biting action and although the scoreboard didn’t depict this for the first few chukkas, For Farriers by Farriers suddenly came together as a team and gave Catfoss a real run for their money in the second half of the game. Sadly for For Farriers by Farriers, a couple of missed penalties that could have provided the turning point just went wide, meaning that Catfoss ran out the winners 6-3½. James Haigh caught everybody’s eye on the Sunday and was deservedly awarded Most Valuable Player, playing an absolute stormer off his handicap. The lovely Bramble, owned by Alex Boucher and played by Tom Collie was awarded Best Playing Pony, this was particularly momentous for Club Chairman Edward Winterton who produced and played Bramble before selling him to Alex Boucher.

Catfoss are a well-established team from Yorkshire and were back to defend their Assam title from last year. General Manager’s Insight

Chef Ethan Rodgers is back for his second year and has become well known in the locality. All in all I have learnt my first impressions were rather off – Cirencester is a thriving, energetic international-level Polo Club, also the most historic in the UK and clearly has a very exciting future ahead.
Mark has been involved in polo for over 30 years
General Manager’s Insight Mark Hayden-Kellard’s views on Cirencester Park Polo Club Mark Hayden-Kellard joined Cirencester Park Polo Club at the beginning of April 2022 as General Manager and Chief Financial Officer. Having spent three months now at the helm, we talk to Mark about his first impressions and what it is like to run one of the oldest polo clubs in the UK.
What’s your background in polo? I have been involved in polo for over 30 years including being on the management teams of Guards, Ham and Royal Berkshire Polo Clubs, as well as running the largest polo school in the country for nine years. I played as a professional polo player at Guards Polo Club, managing a portfolio of High Net Worth private clients. I also spent time serving in the British Army for six years and then went on to run a property development business. I am lucky to have travelled all over the world for work and pleasure, visiting many international polo clubs. In my spare time I enjoy flying helicopters and naturally, playing polo! What were your initial first impressions of Cirencester? I must admit that prior to coming to starting work at Cirencester, I thought that it was a small country Club, albeit charming. How wrong I was. Having been to polo clubs all over the world, and managed other clubs in the UK, Cirencester is the friendliest and most
beautiful Club by far. But that is just the start… I was amazed at both the professionalism of the team and the huge investment the Club puts into the fields and facilities. We have new irrigation equipment and invest heavily in sand for the fields. Given the outstanding condition of grounds we can offer, we are seeing more and more teams entering our prestigious highgoal tournaments. Most recently we welcomed Poroto Cambiaso, Jeta Castagnola, Bartolomé Castagnola and Ned Hine who played in the 18 and 22 goal for team Semper Anticus, owned by patron Clarinda Tija-Dharmadi. We also welcomed Isidro Strada, who plays for our Chairman Chris Fagan’s team, Noon Giraffe and was also playing in Cowdray’s Gold Cup. For Armed Forces Day, also the Final of our 18 goal Apsley Cup, I was lucky enough to experience the excellent quality of our fields and I took part in the UK Armed Forces Polo Association v Cirencester exhibition match, playing on the hallowed ground, Meadow. It was a joy to play on. The Clubhouse has also undergone significant refurbishment, to include a brand new commercial kitchen, new decking for diners and new offices for the CPPC team – quite a change since the last time I was playing at Cirencester a few years ago! Set in the heart the stunning Grade I listed Cirencester Park, there really is no better place to sit and eat gastronomic food and watch polo. Our Head
What are some of the highlights still to come this season? We still have the famous 15 goal County Cup to play this season, with the Final being played on Saturday 13 August. This is going to be a huge day as we will be putting on our popular Olympic dressage demo with our social member Anne Marie Bork-Eppers performing her glorious freestyle to music. This will be followed by a retraining of racehorses demo to include flatwork and show jumping, by Anne Marie’s husband Andy Farmer. The day will be raising funds for RoR. We are honoured to have Desi Dillingham MBE, ex chair of British Dressage President of the BHS compering the demos. The Ivy Lodge Restaurant will be hosting various social events, details of which can be found on the website. Polo is played every weekend and everyone is welcome – again full details are on the website. What are your future plans for the Club? My plan for the Club and its Members is to grow the sponsorship and hospitality side of the business, at the same time as continuing to invest in our grounds and infrastructure so that we can continue to host high level polo. We are also encouraging new Social Members to join our club, to come and watch polo all season long and enjoy the many Member benefits they receive. We have been especially welcoming new Social Members post-Covid as we are lucky enough to be based in such a glorious expanse of open parkland, where families can enjoy a day out safely.

On Thursday 23 June, after months of careful planning, the inaugural Durham Invitational Polo Tournament was hosted at Thoresby Park Polo Club in blistering sunshine, with teams from the universities of Durham, Nottingham, Exeter and London competing for prizes generously donated by Oswald Sporting and Hrafn Gin. Throughout the day, the action was followed carefully by a group of dedicated spectators from Durham University, keen to watch some of the best

Following a brief interlude for a buffet prepared at Thoresby, the Durham side then triumphed after an excellent performance in their Subsidiary Final against London, before the Final was won by an impressive Exeter team, who, led by tournament MVP Zac Campbell-Breeden, defeated Nottingham in a brilliant and gripping match decided by a penalty shootout. Following the prize-giving ceremony, players and spectators then returned to Durham for an evening at the Durham University Polo Ball, turn to the Sidelines pages for social images from the evening. The thrilling standard of play reflected a tremendous year of growth for the Durham University Polo Club, who have broken membership and performance records both on and off the pitch. Suicide is the leading cause of death in men under 50 in the UK. Our mission at James’ Place is to stop men dying by suicide. James' Place was founded by Clare Milford Haven and Nick Wentworth-Stanley following the tragic loss of their son, James Wentworth-Stanley, aged 21. James’ Place is a place where men in suicidal crisis can access support, advice and help. Our centres in Liverpool and London provide a safe, therapeutic environment in which men are cared for, respected, and treated by professional therapists. Since we started delivering our intervention in August 2018, we have seen over 1,100 men in crisis. We now need to expand our service to provide our life-saving, unique intervention nationally, treating 2000 men per year, by opening three further centres in England.

Royal Air Force Polo Association Sponsors Day
Photograph by Corporal Nick Egan
Saturday 18 June saw RAF Polo join forces with August and Masraf London hosting a Sponsors Day at Ham Polo Club to raise funds to develop the skills of the next generation of RAF polo players. After a drinks reception and three course lunch, the polo match got underway between the RAF team, sponsored by Masraf London, and the Ham team, sponsored by August. The teams battled it out over four chukkas; it was nail-bitingly close throughout and the end-to-end action could easily have gone either way. After a great exhibition of polo to an audience that was largely new to the sport, the final score was Masraf RAF 7-6½ to August Ham. The Royal Air Force Polo Association are incredibly grateful to Ham Polo Club for being such outstanding hosts and for their continued support to RAF Polo and a huge thank you to their two main sponsors. The Queen’s Royal Hussars have proved best at Inter Regimental Polo for the second year in succession. This year they overwhelmed The Royal Air Force 8-1½ at Guards Polo Club to win the oldest polo trophy still played for in the UK. The Hussars team delivered strong play throughout all four chukkas and some excellent team-work ensured they were 4-1½ up at half-time. Brigadier Nick Cowley, the youngest Brigadier in the British Army, was always in the right place to push the 44

Hussars team forward and some great runs from Capt Henry Amor ensured the Army team were in control from the first whistle. Such four-man play resulted in Capt Jamie Fry receiving the magnificent trophy, which was first played for in 1871, from Air Commodore Tim Brown, Director of the Armed Forces Polo Association. The final score however does not do justice to the RAF team, who were making their debut in this Inter Regimental final. Officer Cadet Jonathan Perry, who was
playing his own ponies, worked tirelessly under a scorching sun to keep the Air Force team in contention and all four RAF players continued to battle until the final whistle. Sadly luck was not on their side on Sunday on The Duke’s Ground. The RAF players did not go home empty handed though as the Pringle Cup, originally donated by Major Jack Pringle of the 8th Hussars who dedicated his life to military polo after serving in the Second World War, was presented to the RAF’s Wing Commander Ed Whitechurch. www.polotimes.co.uk

The Rundle Cup
T
his year’s Rundle Cup at Tedworth Park Polo Club certainly was a tremendously busy, energetic hot one, both on and off the pitch. Circa 6,000 people plus came through the gates on what was a wonderful summer day for the amazing polo action. The Fisher ground was centre stage with four polo matches, a jockey’s race, and parachute display from the REME Lightning Bolts and Royal Navy Raiders. Pitch side again
was very busy indeed with a buzz and excitement around the British Polo Gin bars keeping everyone hydrated with their wonderful range of gin and Pimm’s and the CFA shopping village to enthuse the best of shoppers! It was a wonderful sight to see so many people entertaining friends, family, colleagues, and associates for this prestigious event, given we are living in the next phase of pandemic Covid life. The Tedworth Park team, led by Rundle Cup organiser Lolly
Stanhope-White, saw months of hard work come to fruition as the crowds flooded in, the champagne glasses in the VIP Hospitality were topped up, and the crowds began to cheer. You could see from the start it was going to be an outstanding Rundle Cup day. Kicking off the excitement was the INSPIRE Foundation Charity match. The INSPIRE Foundation is a unique, Salisbury based charity which raises money for spinal research throughout the UK. Jockeys vs

2018 and my neck some 12 years ago. (Please note only one of these injuries was caused on the polo field). It certainly wasn’t my day to lift the plate, despite a huge effort from the team. The Bayliss and Harding Jockeys were just better polo players on the day – we will see you on the field again for a re match next year! Disclaimer: Tedworth Park Polo Club accept no responsibility for you now quitting your equestrian discipline and taking up playing polo. With back-to-back action, we went straight into The Heroes Cup Match, where Peter O’Rourke’s Strategic Shipping Heroes team went head-to-head with the Military Veterans team. When the Heroes team was first created who would have said back then that one of the players would now be a Ladies International polo player! Fran Townend, who is lucky to have kept her life after a life changing road traffic accident, has gone from playing in the Ladies International for England in Argentina to the Fisher ground at Tedworth Park in literally a matter of months. The Heroes and Veterans alike are magnificent, brave, and awe-inspiring players and are being well supported by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust and the Invictus Games Foundation. By 2pm the main Fisher ground was bulging at the seams with huge crowds in readiness for The Indian Cavalry Officers (ICOA) Trophy. We were delighted to welcome the US Military polo team who showed incredible fighting skills this side of the pond against the UK Armed Forces Polo Association. It was a close call how this game was going to go with even sides on handicap. Captain Paddy Selfe, having spent the last seven months on tour in Iraq, The Rundle Cup dates back to 1910 and was originally played for in Malta
after only four weeks back in the saddle here in the UK, showed that it is just like riding a bike! The skills and prowess leading his team of players was sensational and they all together put on an incredible display to whip up the excitement from the crowds. Lt. Col. Simon Ledger also entertained the crowds with his epic stand up commentary! He really does get the polo party started hours before The Rundle Cup Afterparty danced the night away. The match was end-to-end with quick, sharp and accurate play with air shots, face shots and perfect dream shots as the ball went high and constantly though the goal posts for both sides gripping the crowds. They both took it to the wire, but the UK came out the victors with 5 goals to the US 4. As the Americans would say “Jeez that was close!” Most Valuable Player for the ICOA Trophy, presented by Horris Hill School, was awarded to Major Will Mawby and the Polo Times Best Playing Pony rug was awarded to Pico Blanco from Druids Lodge Polo Club, to read more out Pico Blanco, please turn to the Pony Power pages. For the main event, The Rundle Cup match sponsored by Palantir, it was certainly set up to be sizzling on the number one ground. The annual skirmish between the Army and the Navy was first played in 1910 in Malta. And temperatures were getting as hot as they probably were when it was played in the Mediterranean as the Army side took control and detonated the ball from the first line out. They both fought hard but as the Navy defended, the Army just took it and said thanks very much! The brand-new Army team were like Exocet missiles with the young, new blood of the team showing they are going to be a force to be reckoned with. Whatever tactic the Navy tried, the Army had an answer for it and replied with full force leaving the Navy Polo Times, August 2022

questioning what they could do. As such the Army kept driving forwards leaving the Navy team retreating flustered and bothered. By the end of the second chukka the Army were just digging deeper and deeper putting 7 goals through the post to the Navy’s 1½. Was this already sink or swim for the Navy? The Navy re-grouped at half-time and came out for their third chukka with more determination, but again there seemed to be a force field between their goal posts. It wasn’t the Navy’s day as phenomenal entertaining play came from all Army players including Barney Jacques-Gray who last played on Rundle Cup day some 20 years ago. In the last chukka when the final bell rang the Army outgunned, outplayed, and outwitted the Navy to leave a final score of the day in record double figures to the Army team, 10-3½. The Club would like to thank our main sponsor Palantir. The Most Valuable Player award, sponsored by Forensic Risk Alliance, was won by Lt. Hector Fair and the Best Playing Pony, sponsored by Gore, was presented to Kipper, owned by Grant Collect.

PADDOCK POWER POWERING PERFORMANCE
PADDOCK POWER ORIGINAL
Horses at grass or in training thrive on PADDOCK POWER ORIGINAL lick with added protein and a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals. This is no ordinary lick it’s a balancer in a bucket! Paddock Power will help your horse prepare for the winter months by supporting it’s immune system and giving it the internal tools to fight mud fever, rain scald and the annual ailments over the winter months. We all like to watch our budget over the winter but sometimes you need to invest to reap the rewards. By supplementing the grass and hay/haylage over the winter with Paddock Power you can really boost your horse’s resilience to our unpredictable English winters. Right now, our horses are changing their coats from summer to winter, and this requires a lot of energy, vitamins, and minerals. These vitamins and minerals are not abundant in the traditional English pasture, and most of us have stopped hard feeding our horses. Paddock Power Original will supplement what we are no longer getting from hard feed. Most horses are running on reserves by the end of a full season, whatever the level, and need a pre-winter boost! Paddock Power provides what they need to help them have a fruitful winter and return in the spring recharged and eager to play.

M Polo CT and Semper Anticus had already met in the qualifying stages of The Ladies British High Goal Championship, with AM Polo CT asserting their dominance and a 6-4 win, would the outcome be the same on Final day for The Cowdray Rosebowl? AM Polo CT opened the anticipated Final on back-to-back goals from the field from Candelaria Fernandez Araujo and
Milly Hine to establish an early lead, but Semper Anticus’ sister act of Tamara Fox and Nina Clarkin managed to tie the scores 2-2. AM Polo CT’s Hine and Azucena Uranga each found the goal in the third chukka with an effective defensive effort contributing to their 4-2 lead entering half time, leaving them just two chukkas away from the undefeated run in the tournament. goal run to extend AM Polo CT’s lead, but the experienced and unflappable Clarkin found the posts twice more to bring Semper Anticus back within reach, 7-4. Semper Anticus’ offense came to life once more as back-to-back goals from Clarkin were complimented by another from Fox to bring Semper Anticus to within one goal of victory, but unfortunately time ran out for Semper Anticus as AM Polo CT ran out the winners, 8-7.

Extreme Cold for Extreme Performance Cryotherapy: Recovery at -110° C In the hot summer days, everybody is looking for the shade to cool down after physical exercise and limit the sweat pouring out of their bodies. Water and ice cooling as we know it as a treatment for swollen and injured horses’ legs can be very helpful and its effect is proven in animals. Huge amounts of research were undertaken to optimise its effects in the human body on inflammation and recovery sustained during injury and training. Massive data collections are now available to calculate the optimal individual therapy to come back stronger and recover better. Even pushing the limits is possible when cryotherapy is used prior to peak performance.
Stimulation Therapy in the Cryochamber
Pain elimination, prevention of development of pain memory and accelerated reduction of inflammation, results in: • timely elimination of reflexive muscular inactivation • prevention of longer pain and inflammation – induced restriction in mobility of the afflicted joints • improvement in local muscular perfusion and with that, muscular metabolism improved recruitment of motor units • decrease in defects in proprioception • prevention of atrophies in the muscle and in the collagenous connective tissue • reduction in the risk of subsequent injuries • reduction of convalescence periods / periods away from training Psychological equilibrium and regulation of sleep behaviour
The Cryodukt (www.cryodukt.ch) cold experience begins with a continuous cold adjustment in the two anterooms at -10°C and -60°C and the actual application takes place at -110°C

Whole-body cold therapy in short-term treatment will bring a long-term effect. Immediately after the whole-body cryotherapy, endorphins are released which create a spontaneous enthusiasm. The dry cold stimulates the entire body, triggering physical and hormonal reactions. After leaving the cold chamber, an increase of well-being and good mood may reflect in vitality and satisfaction. Long-term positive effects can be triggered with
repeated use. Professional tennis, rugby and football clubs all over the globe use this in their daily routine.

Cryo Chamber for Well-being Recharge the coolness; the power of the cold can improve performance and gain more well-being and vitality. Whether it is about strengthening the immune system, improving complexion, sleep hygiene or supporting weight control.
Sport & Fitness: Extreme Cold for Extreme Performance Whole-body cryotherapy in the cold chamber improves athletic performance, top athletes have been using it for a long time. It accelerates regeneration after training or sporting exertion, so that both professionals and occasional athletes can enjoy increased performance, training optimisation, oxygen saturation of the muscles, pain treatment and more focus. Experiences from cold research in sport, fitness and competitive sport state a shortening of the regeneration time in the event of injuries Faster recovery time after exercise, a reduction of the risk of injury as it is also suitable as accompanying therapy for sports injuries. An increase of possible peak performance is achieved with a reduction of sore muscles and muscle overstimulation

detailed anamnesis. The time of application is influenced by gender, age, body size, weight, skin type and the area of application. Basically, the application times are three minutes. As cryotherapy has been used safely for over 30 years in close cooperation with doctors and specialists, a team of medical experts is in the background.
How Do You Dress in the Cold Room? During the application, you wear short sportswear or swimwear (important: women’s bikini or bra, but no bathing suit!) Sensitive parts of the body are protected with a face mask, earmuffs, gloves, socks and chamber shoes.
Individualized Visit Planning Through App RemediCool Whole-body cold therapy in short-term treatment will bring a long-term effect
The cold stimulus immediately activates selfregulation, self-repair and self-healing. Acute and chronic pain are significantly reduced due to the increased blood flow and oxygen supply. The blood circulation is stimulated, and the local metabolic rate improves. The psyche is also happy, because released endorphins and serotonin brighten the mood. Whole body therapy can help reduce swelling and inflammation and significantly improved performance is made possible.

Performance & Wellbeing: Boost Your Energy
Positive support for rheumatic diseases with reduced joint swelling with a combined natural pain relief for acute & chronic pain. Some impact as accompanying treatment for burnout and depressive moods as well as a strengthening of the immune system is possible. The vascular stimulation can also have an anti-inflammatory effect.
Cryotherapy has long been a beauty and anti-ageing trend among media and sports stars. Collagen production increases when exposed to the cold, thus ensuring freshness. In addition, every walk in the cold chamber supports your weight management, because the body burns a lot of calories about 400kcal, which ultimately promotes more effective weight loss.
In addition to a noticeable, spontaneous feeling of well-being after your whole-body cold application, you can also see success in symptoms of fatigue and sleep promotion. Your body can restore its natural rhythm and reduce stress. Sleep habits are improved and the mood is more positive. You feel powerful, full of energy and ready to take on the world.
What Happens with Cryotherapy?
In order to keep its core body temperature at 37°C, the body boosts its metabolism. The skin surface temperature drops by approx. 15°C). The body activates its protective mechanism and produces heat, and the release of endorphins creates a feeling of happiness. This also provides energy, focus and promotes calorie consumption. The body’s own defence system is activated and detoxification is stimulated. Blood flow and the production of collagen increases, and the production of new cells is stimulated. The body releases hormones and enzymes into the bloodstream to aid regeneration.

With the certified software from RemediCool, the general applicability of a cold therapy is determined for the user. The blood pressure is also measured. An individual cold training will be developed, based on the personal physiological data (such as skin type, training level, gender and BMI). Combined with the thermal perception before and during the first application at -110°C, an ideal application time taking the goals into account can be calculated. The cold experience begins with a continuous cold adjustment in the two anterooms at -10°C and -60°C and the actual application takes place at -110°C. A trained full-body cold coach will accompany the participant throughout the application. Of course, the application can be interrupted at any time and the chamber can be exited.
FAQs
Q: Can you get a cold from cryotherapy, what are the possible side effects after treatment? A: It’s impossible to catch a cold during treatment. However, the immune system is stimulated. Most likely, regular users are generally much less susceptible to colds. It will give the user an energy boost or fatigue (from detox). Headaches due to detox is possible. Q: How often can I repeat the application? A: You can go into the cold chamber every day. The recommended repetition of the application is calculated individually by the RemediCool software together with the optimal application time for each user.

Get Back to Your Core Improve posture, flexibility & balance These exercises target the abdominal muscles whilst warming up the entire body. The starting position is supine (on your back) on a mat. If lifting the head causes discomfort in the neck, rest it back down onto the mat and try the exercise with the head and shoulders supported on the mat. If choosing to keep the head down, then limit the amount you take the legs away from your body to avoid an anterior tilt of the pelvis or putting any strain on your lower back and abdominal area.
flexibility. Inhale as you change the positions of your legs and exhale as you draw the opposite leg in toward you. Perform eight to 10 repetitions with pointed feet (plantar flexion), and then eight to 10 repetitions with flexed feet (dorsiflexion).
Single Leg Stretch
Photography by Natalie Willcock
Lie on your back with your knees pulled into your chest. Maintain a deep scoop in your lower abdominals as you lengthen one leg away from you. Hold the opposite leg at the shin (or knee) whilst keeping the knee bent and at a ninety-degree angle. Inhale to change legs (switch positions of your legs) keeping the legs parallel and in line with the hips. Perform eight to 10 repetitions with pointed feet and then another eight to 10 with flexed feet.
Double Straight Leg Stretch
Place both hands behind your head and extend both legs away from your body and have a sense of wrapping the legs around pressing the heels together in slight external rotation. Inhale to prepare. Exhale, engaging the deepest lower abdominals to perform a small posterior pelvic tilt whilst bringing both legs closer to you. Perform 10 repetitions.
Double Leg Stretch
Bring both knees in towards your chest placing the hands on your shins or ankles. Inhale and extend both arms alongside your ears as you lengthen the legs away from you keeping the legs straight and the abdominals scooped into your spine. Hold your breath as you circle your arms out to the sides, keeping them shoulder height. Exhale to engage your lower abdominals and then bring your legs and arms back to the starting position. Perform five repetitions.
Single Straight Leg Stretch
Starting position as before, lengthen one leg away from you and bring it parallel to the floor. Bring the other leg up and hold it with both hands. This will depend on your 58

and chest off the floor (make sure you allow the strength of your abdominals to do the work and not by pulling your head forwards). Draw one knee in toward you and lengthen the other leg away (as performed with the single-leg stretch). Rotate to spiral your upper body and aim to bring the opposite elbow toward the bent knee. Inhale as the knees pass each other and exhale as you bring the opposite knee into your chest whilst rotating the upper body. Opposite elbow to the knee. Keep the legs parallel and in line with the hips. Perform eight to 10 repetitions with pointed feet, and then eight to 10 with flexed feet.
Bent Knee Fallouts
Lie on the floor with your knees bent and feet parallel and hip-width apart. Inhale to breathe into the back and the sides of your rib cage concentrating on keeping the abdominals scooping and lengthening, exhale and allow one leg to fall outwards in a controlled movement. You should feel a connection in the lower abdominals on the opposing side as the knee falls out. Keep the pelvis stable and allow the abdominals to connect even more on the inhale to return the leg to the starting position. Repeat four to eight times on each side (alternating each leg).
Criss-Cross

Single Leg Raise
Starting position as before with arms by the side. Inhale slowly and connect your abdominals and let one leg float up off the floor, keeping the leg at a ninety-degree angle. Hold for two counts and gradually lower the leg and foot to the floor with control on the exhalation. Repeat the sequence 10 times alternating on each leg.
Bugs
Lie supine as with the previous two exercises with arms by the side and feet hip-width apart. Inhale, to prepare your abdominals, and slide one leg away as you lengthen the opposite arm behind (level with your ears) without allowing the shoulders to lift and lose contact with the floor. Hold for two counts and as you exhale return the arm and opposite leg to
the starting position. Repeat the exercise five times on each side alternating every time. Having strong abdominal muscles is very important as it helps you maintain stability and balance, as well as making it easier to perform and perfect your movements on and off your horse. Weak abdominal muscles can lead to poor posture, fatigue and more susceptibility to injury.

Chukka Wellness ‘How To’ Tutorials Glute Bridge & Superman Pose We continue with our ‘how to’ series focusing on the Glute Bridge and the Superman Pose. You may be a ‘keen bean’ exerciser but are you sure your technique is correct? If it’s
not you may be doing more damage to your body than good. Hence why we created this ‘how to’ series to educate riders on the basics of simple but effective exercises.
We will be looking at the dos and don’ts of the Glute Bridge and Superman Pose with British polo player, Tommy Severn.
Glute Bridge/Hip Thrusts
This exercise is very useful in a warm-up routine as it activates the posterior chain muscles and fires up the Glutes improving control in the saddle when you are in rising canter, ride offs and rotating. By activating the posterior chain you are also helping to strengthen the muscles surrounding the back region which in turn takes pressure off the lower back. Photography by Chukka Wellness
Don’t • Avoid overextending through the lower back as you raise the hips • Don’t place the feet too far away from your hips as this activates the hamstrings more than the glutes • Avoid letting the knees fall in or out as the hips raise and lower • Avoid thrusting the hips up and down as this puts a lot of pressure on the lower back
Don’t overextend through the lower back
Do • Keep the core engaged during the movement • Ensure feet are hip width apart • Push up through the heels and not the toes • Roll the vertebrae up off the mat one at a time in a controlled movement as you raise the hips and reverse this movement during the lowering phase. Try 3-4 sets of 12-15 reps

Superman Pose
We have mentioned this exercise numerous times in our articles as it is an essential movement for riders. Not only does it activate the muscles, improve joint stability, engage the core muscles but improves balance. Despite being a simple movement there are a few common mistakes people make.
Do • Ensure your wrist is directly under the shoulder and your knee is directly under your hip • Engage your core to maintain control during the movement and to protect the back • Fully extend the back leg out keeping the foot in line with your hips • Stabilise through the planted shoulder blade and focus on raising your body up towards the sky as opposed to sinking down into the mat Note: You can focus on holding this movement or add some leg pulses in, or crunching the elbow to the knee underneath your stomach.
Photography by Chukka Wellness
Don’t • Avoid collapsing through your planted hip and shoulder • Don’t raise the back leg too high as this will unbalance you • Don’t arch the lower spine to avoid injury in the back • Avoid over rotating the raised leg outwards as this will unbalance you and put pressure on the wrist

Following the invitational tournament earlier in the day, spectators and players alike returned to Durham to join members and their guests for an evening at the biannual Durham University Polo Ball. Set in the Winter Gardens at Beamish Hall Hotel, attendees received the committee’s traditional welcome: meeting and having their picture taken with two polo ponies, who had travelled up from Thoresby Park Polo Club for the occasion. After indulging in a sparkling reception and playing croquet and boules on the hotel grounds, guests were then treated to a seasonal three-course meal in a room decorated with roses to celebrate the Summer theme. This preceded a raffle and auction, where prizes included polo lessons and shooting packages, before the event concluded with guests engaging in a rodeo bull competition and dancing into the early hours to performances from the Durham-based band Orchard Thieves and DJ Francois Miravalls. Rfn Bobby Santrian started riding when he was three-years-old, his father, Lt Commander Bob Santrian (RN), was a member at Taunton Vale Polo Club when Bobby was growing up and it wasn’t long until he started joining in. Bobby swiftly entered the Pony Club polo circuit and went on to win the Subsidiary Final of the Hipwood Junior HPA section. Since joining the Army in 2020 he had to put his polo ambitions on hold. However, the Army has now provided him with the opportunity to rekindle his love with the sport and play with pride for the Army, being the first Rifleman to do so Biggest polo achievements to date? This would have to be playing in the Rundle Cup 2022 and bringing home the Cup for the Army.
Who were/are your favourite teammates? The Army Rundle Cup team, even though we didn’t have much time together, the cohesion made and the banter formed between us was great, no matter what rank.
What is your biggest passion and why? I would have to say that improving my self in any way would be a good passion of my whether it be career or otherwise.
Favourite celebrity? Johnny Depp.
Hardest opponent? When playing in Argentina at 16 goal polo, I was well out of my comfort zone. There were many times when I said to myself “I can’t beat this player” but giving it all, I managed to any way. Which sports do you like outside of polo? I haven’t played much sport outside polo, but Wednesday sports afternoon football is always fun. Favourite film and why? No contest or explanation needed. Hot Fuzz. Favourite song/ album? Dance wiv Me by Dizzee Rascal, always sets a good vibe and can be played at anytime during the night to bring out the moves.
Polo Times, August 2022
Favourite hobby outside of polo? I think the gym, as it keeps me healthy and in shape and its always available. Most prized possession? I wouldn’t say I have a prized possession, I’m not a materialistic person in that way.
What is your all time best polo memory? 100 per cent drinking champagne from The Rundle Cup itself and seeing the people who have pushed me to be where I am, friends and family.
72
Favourite food/dish? Spaghetti carbonara, I can cook it and it tastes amazing.
Best holiday destination & activity? Argentina! The culture, the food and the parties are set apart from all. Best pony and why? A horse I owned when getting into polo called Carolina. The horse that taught me how to be aggressive in the sport and how to dismount in style. Are you passionately superstitious? I’m not superstitious in anyway, I’ll walk over grates and under ladders just fine. Describe yourself in three words… Always need supervision One thing which would surprise us about you? My dad is a Naval Commando, has played in The Rundle Cup for the Navy and won in 2017, making me and my dad the only father and son to win The Rundle Cup for both sides.
