The Argentine Association of Polo (AAP) has announced it will be widening its handicap range to include -2 and -1 goal handicaps, which takes into account the disparity in the level of play between players when the lowest level is 0 goals. As Marcos Aldao, AAP Operations Manager explained, “This range will start at -2 and go up to 10 goals. This decision has been taken to create a fairer base for individual rates. There are a large amount of 0-goal players, which makes the sport an unbalanced competition, and sometimes increases risks, as not all 0-goalers play on the same level. As a result, in doing this we believe that lower rated players will play an important role when it comes to choosing teams.” These new handicaps will be valid for the 2022 spring season. Clubs introducing new players are responsible for allocating the correct handicap, young players who have participated in official tournaments before the age of thirteen will start with 0 goal handicap.

Weighing in at a whopping 92 pages, this issue of Polo Times is the biggest in almost two years. Does size matter you might say? Well, in pure and simple publishing terms, this big size equates to the great news that a lot has been happening in the polo world – the relevance in the context of the Covid barometer, being that the UK is finally, (almost), back to normal. A triumvirate of the most notable high profile events in the 2021 polo calendar featured in this issue are: the Pony Club Championships, the SUPA Summer Championships and The Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup. The former was of course, not held in 2020 due to the pandemic; whilst the latter, is a new high goal tournament at Guards Polo Club. Whilst everyone involved should be commended for spearheading the collective drive to get polo back on its feet again, these tournaments do not just happen by chance and we know that two people deserve special mention. Firstly, Pony Club Polo’s Charles Whittington and SUPA’s Nigel Mercer for the countless hours they he has undoubtedly put in to ensure Covid did not stop play for another year; and secondly, John Collins of Talacrest Ferrari to have sponsored The Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup. Having played in all levels of polo himself, from low, medium to high goal, John is no stranger to polo so it is fantastic to see him support Guards’ new high goal tournament. I hope that you will enjoy reading about these, and all the other features, news and reports contained in this issue. The technical section is again, not one to miss, be you a 10 goal player or -2 goaler, horse breeder or patron, there is something for everyone. Away from the pitch-side positivity, polo sadly lost one of the sport’s greatest characters in Brod Munroe-Wilson. Never one to shy from saying what he thought, Brod had a mischievous sense of humour which often got him into trouble, which he of course loved. He was the very best raconteur and always great company to be in – polo is the poorer for his passing. On 10 October, the HPA’s Ollie Hughes will be running the Manchester Marathon, raising money for two charities whose work aims to prevent male suicides, Papyrus (www. papyrus-uk.org) and James’ Place (www. jamesplace.org.uk). With the care and support that these two amazing charities provide, let us hope that what is currently the single biggest killer for men under the age of 45, will be better understood, and ultimately beaten. To our readers, contributors and sponsors, thank you for your collective support. Enjoy the read, be kind, on and off the field, and – as always play safe.

Born on 18 June 1945, ‘Brod’ is reported as having passed away after a fall on 26 July, aged 76. Banker, friend of Prince Charles and famously noted as a ‘cad’ by a High Court judge he was a regular at Guards Polo Club. Educated at Lancing and having served in the SAS, Munro-Wilson enjoyed a successful career in the City and was known in banking circles as the ‘Brodfather’. He took a sabbatical from his business in 1980 to race in National Hunt, despite claims that he rode like a man trying to fold a deckchair in a gale. Most famously he competed in the Grand National and won the 1982 Foxhunter’s Chase at Cheltenham. After his racing forays he went on to focus on his polo, with his Rocking Horse team who were based at Dale Park next to Windsor Great Park. In the late 80s his polo pros included, amongst others, James Lucas, Roddy Wood, Will and Andy Hine and the American pro F D Walton. Prince Charles, whom Munro-Wilson had been at Cambridge with was also invited to play on the Rocking Horse team. Brod was a regular on the Guards polo social scene, he was an unforgettable character who will certainly not be forgotten. Brod is survived by his daughters, Charlotte and Emma.

Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup

s we all know only too well, 2021 has been a year of many firsts, and many that we would rather not remember. However, as the country emerged into non-mask wearing relative normality a positive and fantastic first to celebrate was a brand new 22 goal tournament at the illustrious Guards Polo Club – the Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup. In its inaugural year it was Andrey Borodin’s Park Place team who secured the maiden victory and so claim their place at top of the inscriptions on this impressive trophy.

The victorious Park Place team with tournament sponsor John Collins of Talacrest Ferrari

Appropriately for a title sponsor who is the world’s most experienced classic Ferrari dealer, having sold in excess of 1,750 Ferrari, to the value of more than $1billion, the teams were not introduced on the field on horseback but from an impressive array of Ferrari. A former high goal polo patron himself, John Collins said when signing this new partnership: “I have been involved with polo at Guards Polo Club for more than 30 years and so am thrilled to be able to support the Club in this high-goal competition. I know from first-hand experience of playing high goal at Guards that the opportunity for players to compete at the highest level on the best grounds is invaluable.” And so, amid much fanfare and expectation befitting a new 22 goal tournament here in the 16

Polo Times, September 2021

PT September2021 Inners.indd 16

UK, five teams entered this first edition of the Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup, with each team playing the others over the previous three weeks. Park Place fared well through the qualifiers and went into the Final not only with an undefeated record, but also with an earlier close win against fellow finalists, Monterosso, earlier in the tournament. However, it was all to play for as Alessandro Bazzoni’s Monterosso certainly made Park Place work hard for their 5-4 final tally, keeping themselves in contention throughout, with little between the two teams. With strong defensive play from both sides it was a low scoring match, but certainly high on skill which delighted the packed Guard’s grandstands. At half time

it was a narrow 3-1 Park Place lead on the boards as guests trod in the divots on the Queen’s Ground. In the fifth chukka Facundo Pieres scored again and a penalty finding the posts for Park Place kept them ahead by a two goal margin. But high goal is super fast, fluid and hard to predict, so the 5-3 score did not see Park Place resting on their laurels. This pressure led to a rule infringement by the boys in blue resulting in Ignacio Toccalino successfully converting a penalty to put Monterosso very much back in contention with just one goal difference on the Guards scoreboard. It was truly edge-of-the-seat stuff as Facundo Sola had two chances for Monterosso in the sixth, but sent them wide. So, in a match that had been close throughout and with nothing in www.polotimes.co.uk

reply from Bazzoni’s line up the score stayed at 5-4, confirming Park Place’s victory. John Collins, the founder of Talacrest and sponsor of this new high-goal tournament, produced some amazing prizes for all players – and match officials – on Finals Day, including Cartier watches for the winners. The Subsidiary Final saw Bardon convert a penalty in extra time to take a 10-9 win against UAE Polo Team to secure the Talacrest Trophy. Sheikha Maitha’s UAE Polo Team and Andras Tombor’s Bardon, had met before in the qualifiers and UAE team had comfortably

won 13-8. So Bardon came to the Subsidiary Final clearly having done their homework and dominated the first half. Matias Machado, who was later named the Talacrest Trophy Most Valuable Player was outstanding in the first half, putting Bardon comfortably ahead 7-2. UAE Polo Team, no stranger to the big occasion, closed the

gap in the second half, forcing this match into extra time. This was the first time in the entire tournament that overtime had to be played. Bardon were awarded a penalty early into the extra time which Fran Elizalde converted to win the match 10-9 in a fittingly close score which reflected the tightness of the entire game.

Sentebale ISPIS Handa Polo Cup

T

he Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup takes place annually and serves as the single largest fundraising moment for the organisation to advance its mission on behalf of young people in need in Lesotho and Botswana. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s Polo Cup was postponed. However, under robust guidance from a leading epidemiologist and in coordination with the Pitkin County Public Health Department and local officials, a reduced version of the fundraiser took place in Aspen, Colorado on 20 August. The match, which was kept under wraps and not publicised for security reasons, featured three teams, Sentebale (with The Duke of Sussex in the line up – making his first public appearance since the birth of his daughter, Lilibet Diana in June), U.S. Polo Association and Royal Salute. The Sentebale team of The Duke of Sussex, Nacho Figueras and siblings Riley and Grant Ganzi, won the round robin event, 3-0, with The Duke of Sussex scoring two goals. The U.S. Polo Association team, led by 8-goaler Alejandro Novillo Astrada, was runner-up and Royal Salute, led by 10 goaler Gonzalito Pieres was third.

The event was held to help vulnerable children in Lesotho affected by extreme poverty, inequality and HIV/Aids epidemic. Having co-founded Sentebale in Lesotho in 2006 in memory of his late mother Princess Diana, The Duke of Sussex pledged $1.5 million from the proceeds of his upcoming book to Sentebale. The tell-all memoir is set to be released by Penguin Random House

for charity in 2022. He was quoted as saying, “Our refocused mission at Sentebale is about addressing the most-immediate needs of vulnerable children in southern Africa, helping them access vital health services, receive necessary care, and build skills to be more resilient and self-sufficient in the future.” In total, the event raised a very impressive $3.5 million in funding for the charity.

Coupe d’Or Final Los Dragones find fifth chukka form

S

unday 29 August saw Los Dragones defeat Mungo in a closely matched game to secure the hugely prestigious Coupe d’Or at the iconic Deauville International Polo Club. After competition over the last three weeks between the six entrants, the Final saw two well balanced and matched teams, with neither side boasting high handicapped players, but instead players of the same level with two very efficient team captains. As you would expect it was a fast and flowing game with the outcome hard to call and so for the first four chukkas it was anybody’s game with goal matched for goal. The results spoke for themselves with the score tied at four apiece at the end of the fourth. However, in the fifth and final chukka Los Dragones turned on the afterburners in the form of great field goals including two spectacular backs from Martin Joaquin (MVP of the Final) and Nicolas Maderna (top scorer of the Final with an impressive four goal tally). It was too much for Mungo to reply to and Los Dragones reaped the results of their fifth chukka blitz with a confident 9-6 win. Rayo Solterona played by

riday 13 is considered unlucky by most, but not for John Smith Ayala who enjoyed a 14-11 win against Cibao La Pampa in the medium goal Terralpa Silver Cup Final at Santa María Polo Club. Despite a descending fog, John Smith Ayala dominated the first chukka, however Cibao La Pampa managed to level the scores and even managed to tie; yet going into the last chukka John Smith Ayala managed to widen and maintain their advantage to secure the trophy. Alejandro Muzzio was named Most Valuable Player while Dolfina Minifalda, played by Patricio Cieza and owned by Adolfo Cambiaso was the Best Playing Pony. The following day, Saturday 14 August, The Terralpa Silver Cup came to an end with the high goal Final between BN Polo and Ayala, the tournament marks the second phase of the 50th International Polo Tournament. The first two chukkas had the spectators on the edge of their seats as both teams exchanged goals to tie 5-5, however BN Polo took a two goal lead in the third chukka, with Ayala closing the gap with a goal of their own. Ayala managed to find their form in the

Gold Cup Finals

This weekend of 27 – 29 August saw The 50th Anniversary International Polo Tournament at Santa María Polo Club come to an end, with the Finals of both the high and medium Gold Cups. On Friday 27 August, the medium goal Gold Cup Final was played between John Smith Ayala and Nairobi; overall the match was fairly even throughout the six chukkas, although twice John Smith Ayala managed to gain a three goal lead, but Nairobi worked had to bring the scores level again. Although Alejandro Muzzio (John Smith Ayala) and Juan Zubiaurre (Nairobi) were the two most decisive players in the Final, it was Gabriel Aguirre

who took the ball at the decisive moment and scored the winning goal, securing the 9-8 win for John Smith Ayala; this adds to their Silver Cup win earlier in the series. The tournament continued on Saturday 28 August, with the high goal Gold Cup Final between Marqués de Riscal and Ayala, which marked the end of the tournament. Marqués de Riscal got off to a strong start, ending the chukka with a comfortable 5-1 lead; halfway through the second chukka an injury forced Benjamín Panelo to retire from the match (he is now recovering well in hospital) and was replaced by Mackenzie Weisz, after which Ayala slowly began to gain momentum.

Both teams put up a tough fight in the last two chukkas, but Marqués de Riscal’s strong defence overcame the scoring attempts of Ayala, and Marqués de Riscal secured the win, 14-10. The High Goal Gold Cup Final Teams: Marqués de Riscal (19): Cruz Heguy (4), Santiago Cernadas (6), Guillermo Caset (9) & Alejandro Aznar (0)) Ayala (20): Iñigo Zobel (0) (replaced by Roberto Iturrioz in the fifth chukka), Benjamín Panelo (5) (replaced by Mackenzie Weisz, 4, in the second chukka), Santiago Laborde 6 (3), Pablo Pieres 9 (6). The fast-paced game featured strong passing attacks from both teams as they combined for nine assists on 12 field goals, highlighting the elite level of play seen in the Final. Tomas Panelo and Andrew Blake-Thomas provided a formidable duo for White Crane,

accounting for all but one of their team’s goals, while Ferne Park responded with a two-man game of their own that was led by Joaquin Pittaluga and Luke Tomlinson. The difference in the match ultimately came down to the additional scoring opportunities for White Crane, as they consistently produced offense over the final four chukkas to claim the 8½-7 victory. The only team to hand Ferne Park a loss in the tournament, White Crane looked to replicate that result in the Final, but Ferne Park raced out of the gate led by the play of Luke Tomlinson. Converting a Penalty 4 while also adding a goal from the field, Tomlinson helped guide Ferne Park to the early 3-1½ advantage as White Crane were a step behind after the opening seven minutes. An increased defensive presence from White Crane kept Ferne Park scoreless in the second chukkas as they quickly erased the two-goal deficit, holding the half goal advantage on handicap at 3½-3 after goals from Panelo and Blake-Thomas. White Crane’s duo continued to produce through the end of the first half as they contributed one more goal each to extend White Crane’s lead by another goal, entering halftime ahead 5½-4. The final two chukkas produced evenly matched polo that left the outcome to be Polo Times, September 2021

decided in the final minutes as White Crane and Ferne Park continued to exchange goals. James Harper and Jose Araya scored their first goals for the only offense in the fourth chukka, as the final chukka was remaining to determine The Challenge Cup champion. Ferne Park struck first on a Penalty 2 conversion from Pittaluga to pull within half a goal, but it was as close as they could come due to the efforts of Panelo, who scored two field goals, both off the pass from Blake-Thomas to secure the 8½-7 victory and The Challenge Cup title. Producing a significant advantage from the field, Green Gates jumped on the ball early in the match to heavily outshoot White Crane 14-3 in the opening half. Led by the play of Cesar Crespo who led all players with four goals, Green Gates continued to pressure

White Crane, keeping them pinned in their own half and preventing any counterattacks. Green Gates struggled from the penalty line where they were unable to convert any of their four attempts, but the overwhelming advantage from the field guided them to the convincing four-goal victory. The opening moments of the match featured back and forth action that left the teams scoreless over the first few minutes until Crespo broke through and received a pass from Charles Cooney to score the first goal of the game. The lead was short-lived as White Crane’s James Harper provided a quick response, resulting in a tied 1-1 score at the end of the first chukka. The remainder of the first half displayed a dominant Green Gates performance as they would score five of the final six goals in the half as White Crane managed just two shot attempts. Crespo added to his total in the second chukka, accounting for all three Green Gates’ goals to give his team the 4-1 lead. Completing a strong first half, Green Gates extended the difference further on two goals from Diego Cavanagh while limiting White Crane to just two goals through three chukkas. In dire need of offense, White Crane pressured Green Gates to begin the second half but the result was foul trouble that awarded Green Gates with three penalty attempts. Failing to convert any of the three attempts provided some hope for White Crane as they narrowed the deficit to three on a goal from Tom Brodie. However, the defence of Green Gates proved to be the www.polotimes.co.uk

Finally, Harrison once again scored for Silvertown Properties with a huge under-theneck shot from 30 yards out. Olivia Clowes scored off a pass from Harrison, followed by a 60 yard penalty for Noon Giraffe taken by John Paul Clarkin resulting in a goal to finish the second chukka 3 goals to 2 to Silvertown Properties. After two rather slow chukkas the teams came back into the

difference in the final as White Crane were held without a goal over the final seven minutes, allowing Green Gates to complete the 7-3 victory. Max Hutchinson took the ball from the line out and gave no opportunity for Noon Giraffe to stop him, scoring his first goal and ending the third chukka 5-3 in favour of Silvertown Properties. Youngster Zac Beim then took the ball from Silvertown Properties and effortlessly tapped it into the goal, Chris Fagan was next to run down the field but missed at the last minute, luckily young Beim was poised to pounce and notched up yet another goal for Noon Giraffe; The last thirty seconds saw Pedro Harrison put the score to 6-5 in favour of Silvertown Properties. The fifth and final chukka saw both teams scramble for the ball with the score being so close, eventually a 40 yard penalty taken by Mark Tomlinson ended in a goal and the game finished with Silvertown Properties winning The Glion County Cup Final 7-5. The pressure started to show in the third though. King Power successfully converted four penalties and with Marcus Cork firing through a fabulous goal just before the bell King Power now had the advantage, 7-6. Both of Green Gates’ goals in this chukka had come from penalties too. With all to play for, Ferrari started the fourth with a field goal to level the scores and a subsequent Green Gates penalty put them ahead once more. However, with two Green Gates penalties going wide in this chukka King Power were still in contention. Jeronimo del Carril, who was later named the Most Valuable Player, made the most of this by first levelling the scores and then firing through the winner from the subsequent line-out with only seconds left on the clock, securing King

Power a 9-8 win. Pili Pichimahuida, which had been played by Marcus Cork in the second half of this match, received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony prize. With 14 teams entering the tournament in 2021 the Subsidiary Final matches were equally competitive, with Ojo Caliente defeating Polo Performance 8-7.

Although Coppid Owls were held without a field goal in the opening half, the steady presence of Mikey Henderson and Tamara Fox from the penalty line where they combined to shoot a perfect four for four led their team’s attack. Assisting on both of

Coppid Owl’s field goals, Henderson was a standout player in the match, effectively guiding play from the number 4 position. Meanwhile, Strategic Help for Heroes had their opportunities throughout the match, outshooting Coppid Owls 12-5 but inaccurate 25 percent shooting kept them from challenging the only undefeated team in the tournament. Unable to mount a comeback in the second half, Strategic Help for Heroes fell 6-3 to Coppid Owls in the entertaining final. Beginning the match in foul trouble, Strategic Help for Heroes conceded two penalty attempts to Coppid Owls and Henderson converted both opportunities, finding the goal on the Penalty 3 and 4s to give his team the early 2-0 lead. Struggling to maintain consistent possession without hearing the umpire’s whistle, Strategic Help for Heroes were kept off the scoreboard until a field goal from Peter O’Rorke opened the scoring in the second chukka. With Coppid Owls’ only scoring coming from the penalty line, they held a narrow one goal lead at halftime as Strategic Help for Heroes inched closer on a goal from Matt Evetts to leave the difference at 3-2. Possession switched back and forth in the tense moments of the match until a foul committed by Strategic Help for Heroes resulted in Henderson’s third penalty goal,

This highly anticipated contest ended up in being a rather defensive and tight affair. Quel Domage drew first blood with a very nicely delivered goal by the patron Hugh Humphrey, immediately answered by a solo effort from Jonny Good. Unfortunately, the Mount Loftus patron, Georgina Brittain sustained an injury in the first chukka and, after a valiant attempt, was unable to continue. Brittain was substituted by Plum Schrager, who proceeded to show a good account of herself. The second chukka started with a quick goal, again from Hugh Humphrey, and then the scores were levelled by Fred Thame. The second half started well for Quel Domage with two goals from Hector Worsley, and Jonny Good managed to pull one back before the end of the chukka. Toby Bradshaw, who played well above his handicap for the whole tournament, converted a goal in the last chukka and the ever-reliable Good answered with a goal of his own, but it was too late to pull the scores back to even and so Quel

The spectators were on the edge of their seats as the victory was anyone’s for the taking. It wasn’t long until Burley Polo were making some excellent team plays and sending them

The fourth and final chukka started on a 40 yard penalty resulting in a goal in favour of R&R. Matias Amaya, desperate to catch up with R&R’s increasing score, tapped the ball into the goal. The first one after a drought of goals for the last

chukka and a half. Harry Tucker, however, took no prisoners, and effortlessly placed the ball into the goal mouth raising R&R’s score once again. As the teams came back to the lineout, Tucker took control of the ball and scored once again and as the chukka neared the seven-minute mark, Fanshawe (later named Most Valuable Player) scored, and R&R Glass and China won the game, 12-3. Beaufort Polo Club – The Claire Tomlinson Final – Sunday 7 August Number of teams: Four Winners: Hascombe Stud Points: 15 The heavens had well and truly opened for the very first Final of The Claire Tomlinson Trophy Ladies VL 18 Goal. Claire Tomlinson has played an integral part in pioneering women’s polo and following on from her legacy we are excited to see the high level of ladies’ polo this trophy will inevitably bring to the field. With a lastminute switch around of teams, Hascombe Stud took to the centre line in place of La Ruleta with Smiths Polo taking position on the opposing side. The game began with a steady start, both teams levelling the playing field with one goal each. It was not until the second chukka that Hascombe Stud began to pave their way towards victory, sending through three cracking goals in one chukka creating a comfortable advantage which carried on through to the third chukka. All the while Smiths Polo struggled to get www.polotimes.co.uk

Victrix Ludorum Season Round-Up a look in against their opponents who were dominating the game and it wasn’t until the final chukka where Smiths Polo had one final say bumping their score up to 2. However, the goal difference proved too great for Smiths Polo to catch up, resulting in Hascombe Stud claiming the win and the very first Claire Tomlinson Trophy, with a final score of 6-2.

A special mention should go to the Polo Times Best Playing Pony which was awarded to Nipper, ridden by Nina Clarkin for Hascombe Stud. The Beaufort Polo Club would like to thank Mayfair and Grace, and Scentiments Tetbury for the provision of prizes for both the Final and Subsidiary Final.

same chukka, Jackson-Gaona was perfectly placed to pick up the ball and fire through the goal. Nina Clarkin, also playing off 10 goals, successfully converted a 40-yard penalty to get La Ruleta off the mark before the half-time bell but Woods’ team were now playing catch-up. Maitha successfully converted a 30-yard penalty in the third, while team mate Cata Lavinia closed this chukka with another goal. Despite trailing for the entire match La Ruleta never gave up fighting. Good teamwork from Clarkin and Danielle Lussi produced a good goal in the third and some smart play from Clarkin and Woods in the fourth secured another goal for La Ruleta. However, with Jackson-Gaona finding the flags once more in this final chukka, UAE Polo Team’s victory was never in doubt. The Best Playing Pony prize was presented by Helen Wood, UK General Manager of NARS, Laura Mercier, SHISEIDO & Clé de Peau Beauté to Matuza Perry, played by Cata Lavinia and owned by Fabio Lavinia. The first game of the day on The Polo Festival Finals’ Day at RCBPC was The Ladies Victrix Ludorum 18 Goal. The two best female players in the world, Hazel Jackson-Gaona for Seasons Kitchen and Farm Shop and Nina Clarkin for La Rosada took to the field to battle it out in front of the crowd. An early goal from Steph Haverhals put La Rosada ahead, but JacksonGaona quickly retaliated bringing her team even. Unfortunately, Seasons Kitchen and Farm Shop couldn’t stop the fierce attack of Haverhals and Buckles as they put another two goals on the scoreboard, and with a hattrick from Nina Clarkin in the second chukka the score was 2½-6 to La Rosada at half-time. The second half saw Charlotte Sweeney and Hazel put away another goal each and younger Sweeney sister, Georgia, and Rosie Lawrence working hard in defence, but La Rosada were seemingly

unstoppable under the guidance of Clarkin and ran out the winners with a score line of 4½-9. Nina Clarkin earned herself Most Valuable Player and her pony Flipper, an 11-year-old chestnut mare from Australia, won herself Best Playing Pony.

Despite the rain, spirits were high with the day featuring a tournament plus African food and cocktails. Lux Afrique’s CEO and founder Alexander Amosu commented, “As we were not able to hold the event last year due to the pandemic we were determined to put on a spectacular event for the enjoyment of all our attendees. For many this is the first social event they have attended postlockdown and it was the best one we’ve done so far. The rain did not stop us from putting on an amazing polo day.” An international line-up of players from Nigeria, Kenya, Argentina and India competed in a match which saw Team Uthando, led by Nigerian polo player Molowa Adesuyi, beat their opponents Team Solando, 7-0. www.polotimes.co.uk

Hosted by Deauville International Polo Club as part of The Barrière Deauville Polo Cup, The Ladies Polo Cup saw three teams compete over 12 – 14 August. Day one saw a 5½-4 win for Le Drakkar vs Maison Décalé and the following day saw another loss for Maison Décalé as Bar du Soleil secured their first win of the tournament. The Final was played on Saturday 14 August between Bar du Soleil and Le Drakkar, with Bar du Soleil securing a convincing 5½-2 win and Fatima Balzano chosen as the Most Valuable Player. The Ladies Polo Cup Final Teams: Bar du Soleil (12): Noémie Eisenchteter (1), Daphné Eisenchteter (0), Fatima Balzano (6) & Caroline Anier (5) Le Drakkar (11): Estelle P. England (1), Adèle Renauldon (3), Ambre Ploix (3) & Olivia Uechtritz (4)

A plethora of players took part in the Club’s women’s weekend of polo

Over the weekend 21 – 22 August, Kirtlington Park Polo Club hosted Women in Polo 12 and 8 goal league. In the 12 goal Coldstream Equestrian League Maize Dulce secured the La Rosada Trophy, with Millie Barfoot named Most Valuable Maize Dulce, winners of the 12 goal Coldstream Player and Santorini owned Equestrian League and played by Robyn Evans, the Best Playing Pony. The 8 goal league ended up as two friendly matches due to the bad weather, played on the Sunday only. Knightmares and Parc Ferme won their respective matches and Abbie Foreman and Rosie Lawrence were chosen as the Most Valuable Players.

It was a busy weekend 21 – 22 August as the Club hosted five Ladies 8 goal teams and four Ladies 4 goal teams. Players travelled from as far a field as Cheshire, Yorkshire and Essex to compete. The fiercely contested Ladies 8 goal final saw old rivals Parc Ferme take on Knightmares. The play was fast and open from the outset with fantastic teamwork from Parc Ferme being matched very evenly by outstanding play from Knightmares throughout. On this occasion, Katie McDonald was a worthy substitute for Abi Foreman for Parc Ferme, and Lucy Coddington took on the role of anchor for the Knightmares team; while their usual Rosie Ross was tied up elsewhere. Lucy’s amazing strength and pony power helped the Knightmares team edge into the lead, but it was the half goal handicap that eventually gave them the victory. MVP was awarded to Lucy Coddington and BPP prize went to Lucy’s 14-year-old homebred gelding ‘Stormdos’, out of her stallion Dublin. Last but not least, the day was concluded with the Ladies WIP 4 goal Ranksboro Trophy. Local team Axholme were through to the Final against The Yorkshire Ladies. It was The Yorkshire Ladies who ran out the winners in the end though and Emma Sanderson that picked up MVP for her efforts. The Subsidary Final of this trophy had to have a few subs due to injury and pony problems, but still a great match was had by all with Thoresby Park dominating and running away with the win over Witham Warriors.

Pony Club Polo Championships

Charles Whittington Pony Club Polo Chairman

Charles Whittington introduces The Flannels Pony Club Polo Championships This has been the most challenging season for everyone involved in the Pony Club and Pony Club Polo. The constant changes in the Covid-19 laws, rules, advice and protocols have meant that we have had to be exceptionally flexible on qualification, team members and many other fronts. Where normally we would only have a few injuries to deal with, we have had constant change in availability and line-up. However, fortunately, we also have had

an exceptional team of volunteers to deal with these challenges: the committee, who report here, our Branch Manager network of 14, our ten tournament organisers, many of whom are new, and about 250 parents who have travelled up and down the whole holidays, sometimes not knowing their team until the last minute. I should also mention the help given by Pony Club staff members. We had quite a number of taster and training days and camps this year which produced a record number of new players. And as a result, I think the standard is as good as it has been for a number of years. A particular success was the umpire/ coaching at the Championships which was kindly sponsored by The Hurlingham Polo Association. For a number of reasons, we opted to go to the Pony Club Championships this

Youth

year at Offchurch Bury where the Polo Club hosted us admirably and the estate hosted the other sports. Reports are below. At the prizegiving on Saturday, I presented retiring committee members Mandy North and Mike Smith with lovely framed photographs by Michael Chevis remembering their contributions to Pony Club Polo. The Tony Gilks award for the most organised Branch Manager went to Claire Maldonado of the Old Surrey and Burstow who travelled everywhere and always seemed to have a spare pony or player available in a crisis. There are too many people to thank by name here, but you know who you are and the players are in debt to you for your time and expertise in this difficult year. Thank you also to our sponsors and donors: the HPA, the Polo Charity, the Martin Treves fund, SATS, JCB and, of course, Polo Times.

Brigadier Justin Stanhope-White, Section Leader of the Gannon reviews this year’s action. “This year’s Gannon Final took place on Lawns 2 at Cowdray Park Polo Club between two very evenly matched 4 goal teams, Cowdray Hunt and Cotswold Hunt. Due to the nature of the season we have all had, it was no surprise that these were the only two teams that contested the Gannon Trophy this year. Given the standard of play in the Final I am quite sure we would have still seen these teams win through the section had there been more entries. The spectators who stayed on after a full packed Pony Club Qualifying Tournament were treated to some fast paced and accurate polo with both teams out to win. The Cowdray Team, Alfie Hyde, Noah Hyde, Timi Badiru and Rufus Uloth were quick off the mark, slotting some early goals which were the result of tight teamwork. But, the Cotswold Hunt Team, Zac Beim, Kiki Severn, Josh Leiva and Will Mallard came back over the second and third chukkas showing just how dangerous they are on the break. The fourth chukka saw the Cowdray team ahead on home soil, but the Cotswold team would not stop fighting. It took two quite individual goals deep into the fourth, by Timi Badiru and his pony Plover (Winner of BPP) to take the score to 6-4 at the final bell and hail Cowdray Hunt the Gannon Champions for 2021.

subs because of Covid-19, self isolation, last minute holidays and the usual human and horse injuries, we were lucky to have a small pool of players able to step in as the need arose – and arise it did! Special mention must go to Matias Maldonado (and Claire Maldonado!) who, over the course of three weeks, substituted in three of the four teams. “The Finals of the section were played at Cowdray where The Beaufort ran out the winners of The Jack Gannon Trophy, having not dropped a game all season. From an early stage, it was obvious how well these four played as a team, supporting each other and they produced fast, slick polo. They deserved the win, having been totally committed throughout, to the ethos that is ‘Pony Club polo’, commendably supported by their team manager and parents. “In an effort to attract players to training days and friendlies, we had decided to run

Bethan Hitchman, Section Manager, reviews the action from this year’s Langford Section. “Having lost the Pony Club Polo season last year to Covid-19, it was a great relief to get this season underway! Sadly, we had fewer Langford teams than previously, so we only ran one division, but the standard was high and the teams cohesive. The section took on a similar format but, with fewer teams, we were able to play three matches at each of the qualifiers at Cirencester, Longdole and Cowdray; resulting in plenty of polo for all. Playing at the qualifiers gave the children an opportunity to support their branch teams, relax, have a picnic and enjoy a polo day with their peer group. They also gave performances that their younger counterparts could aspire to – just what Pony Club polo is all about! “The Langford teams were made up of players from all the corners of the country and special mention must go to Thom Bell, who travelled from Scotland and spent 10 days camping between Gloucestershire and Sussex, thus allowing his son, Charles, to play all four qualifiers with the Old Surrey & Burstow. Due to the continual need for

As Section Manager, Christopher Price reviews the Loriner/Rendell sections. “Sadly, there were only three teams competing in the year’s Loriner/Rendell Section from the Beaufort, Royal Artillery and South Oxfordshire Hunt South. League matches were played at all the Qualifiers – Beaufort, Cirencester, Longdole, Cowdray and Kirtlington – although the Royal Artillery were unable to play at the Beaufort Qualifiers, and the result of the League was:

the league on a points system based on attending all/any of the polo days, including qualifiers, where individuals could acrue points to add to a team tally. The only proviso was that the Final was to be at Kirtlington and the teams had to play there to be awarded the trophy. Unfortunately, the team with the most points, The West Hants, having supported training days and friendlies alike, were unable to come to Kirtlington, so the league was decided as a straight four chukka match between The Beaufort and The Cowdray (action from the match is pictured on page 58). Both teams had to have a sub on the day, but this led to them being equal on handicap and it gave us one of the best games of the season. The Cowdray were the eventual winners, 6-4, but it could have gone either way and provided some heart stopping moments. Individual awards were decided at Kirtlington and The Catherines Yeates Trophy was awarded to Lucy McLaughlin for her impressive gamesmanship and commitment and The Andrew Older Memorial trophy was given to Hector Rogberg for continued improvement throughout the season; all-round ability to galvanise his team and play a hugely supporting role. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the players, Team/Branch Managers, parents, ponies, volunteers and tournament organisers, who all came together to make the most of a difficult year but one that will be remembered for all the right reasons! Here’s to 2022! First: Royal Artillery Second: Beaufort Third: South Oxfordshire Hunt (South) However, most of the matches played were close and ultimately there was very little between the teams. The League Winning Trophy was presented at the end of the Kirtlington tournament and the only individual prize was for the best playing Loriner girl at the Beaufort and that was won by Alice Playne of the Beaufort. “All three teams went to the Championships, although the Beaufort made two changes to their team, with Bel McLaughlin and Holly Bullock unable to play and Charlie Hodges and Marcos Petrovic replacing them; the Royal Artillery and South Oxfordshire Hunt (South) teams making no changes. As with the League, the results at the Championships were close and after five chukkas an exciting rundown between the Royal Artillery and the Beaufort was required to confirm the winners. As with the League the result at the Championships was: First: Royal Artillery Second: Beaufort Third: South Oxfordshire Hunt (South) “The individual prize for the most promising Loriner Girl throughout the season – The Sylvia Shepherd Trophy – went to Izzy Playne of the Beaufort. of the three teams are commended for the high standard of play throughout and the huge improvement they all made as the season progressed. Above all, the players conducted themselves in a truly sportsmanlike and competitive way, and are congratulated on setting a great example as

to how polo should be played. “The winner of the best retrained racehorse prize at the Pony Club Polo Championships, kindly given by the Retraining of Racehorses Charity, was won by Middleton Minx, an 18-year-old bay, by Foxhound, played by Scarlett Picksley.”

It was soon obvious that whereever possible over the last 18 months, many of the children had attended rallies and practices. Well done to all the Branch Managers who had worked so hard for all their members. “16 teams within the age group of 11 to U15, took part over the summer, taking part in training days, polo camp, friendly tournaments, the qualifiers and then finally 54

the championship. A big ‘Thank You” to those to all the clubs and grounds for so generously allowing us to use their facilites, and for those who organised them all. Fierce competition indeed, but much fun was had by all. The qualifiers were hotly contested by all 16 teams, divided into 3 Divisions at Cirencester and Longdole, and not many less at Beaufort and Cowdray. The teams

knocking at the door of the top of Division 1 were the Crawley and Horsham, OS&B, Cotswold and Beaufort. Sadly, due to the extenuating circumstances of this year, not all teams were able to compete at Kirtlington where the league finals were awarded, or at Offchurch Bury for the Championships. But the OS&B did compete at Kirtlington and although lost the Final to the Cotswold, ran out the winners For Youth polo dates, please turn to our What’s On pages

Over the three days of competition many hard-fought chukkas were played, with some excellent play throughout. By Sunday the Finals were in place: Division 1 Finals

were between the No. 2 seed OS&B, having knocked out the No. 1 seed Crawley and Horsham on the way, and the HH Red who had played consistently well to join them in the Final. But the OS&B continued with their outstanding play to run out the winners 4-1. The HH Green played off against the Cambridge and after a close-run thing, ran

A very well done to all winners. “The award for the most promising U15 player, the Young Telegraph Cup, went to Matias Maldonado from the OS&B. Congratulations to Matias.”

Chris Eaton, the Handley Cross Section Manager gives us an update on this section. “Our first year holding the Pony Club Polo Championships with all the other pony club disciplines was a huge success. We had a brilliant weekend, partly thanks to the weather forecast not being anywhere near as bad as was forecast. “We had five Handley Cross teams this season, all of very different abilities. We divided HX teams into two sections, giving the teams new to polo a chance to play against a similar standard. The Hampshire Hunt (HH), Cottesmore and Devon and Somerset in Division 1 and the RA and Berkeley in Division 2. “HH fought the Cottesmore team for first place and won leaving Cottesmore the runners up and Devon and Somerset in third. In Division 2, the RA found amazing skill on the final day, narrowly beat the Berkeley to win Division 2. “All the teams played brilliantly and improved dramatically over the course of the tournaments. “We were so pleased to see so many

Jenny Blake-Thomas, Section Manager reviews this year’s Jorrocks Section. “The Jorrocks Championships were held at Offchurch Bury alongside the other pony club sections over two days, Friday and Saturday 20/21 August 2021. “Seven Jorrocks teams had competed in the qualifiers, but only five teams were able to compete at the Championships. These teams played as one group on the Friday and the top three teams then played as Division 1 on Saturday and the other two teams as Division 2. “New for the 2021 season was a Jorrocks on Polo Ponies section. Children taking part were the same age as for Jorrocks on fluffy ponies (under 11 on 1st January) but unlike regular Jorrocks, there were no regulations as to height of the ponies. Four teams took part in the qualifiers and three teams played at the Championships in one division.

Zoe Melhuish,

University of Essex reports

The weekend of 6 – 8 of August saw a small miracle occur, the SUPA Summer Nationals, 2021. After such a challenging year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and with ever changing restrictions, many of us wondered if we would ever get the chance to meet and train with our teams again, let alone play in a national tournament. But after months of careful planning and with safety measures in place, such as ensuring everyone presented a negative lateral flow test upon entry, Offchurch Bury Polo Club was Covid secure and ready for over one hundred university teams to take to the polo pitch once again. As with any British summer, it was raining by the time everyone from my team, the University of Essex, had arrived on Thursday 5th August, so we headed straight for the pub. A burger, pint, and a catch up were in order; putting up the tents would have to wait. What we weren’t expecting was to still be struggling with them at gone eleven pm, using our phones’ torches, guessing where the poles went and trying not to rip the canvas. But eventually we had set up camp, next to our friends and neighbours from UEA and the University of Kent. The atmosphere was a buzz of festival energy, feeling more like Glastonbury than SUPA, that continued to grow throughout the tournament. We wandered around tents, gazebos and inflatable chairs in our wellies, dancing to music. It was the first time many of us had been able to let our hair down, and relax with teammates and friends from other

universities, made from SUPA’s past that we hadn’t seen in so long. New friends were made in portaloo queues, with rivals after chukkas or in the warm-up arena and open invites were extended for informal socials. SUPA gave us the chance to come together not just for the love of polo but for the friendships it created. It was heartening to see this camaraderie transfer onto the pitch, and the enthusiasm and sportsmanship was amazing. Whether you were playing or spectating, the amount of cheering and support for fellow teammates and friends was phenomenal. The level of skill and the quality of the chukkas was exceptional, yielding great results across the board. As well as the winning teams [see the Roll of Honour for more detail], congratulations are also in order for Ben Huson from Royal Holloway who won Most Promising Player. Also to Roxy who was the Polo Times Best Playing Pony from Rugby Polo Club. Thank you to all the sponsors including RJ Polo with their fantastic merchandise. SUPA’s newest sponsors, Black Hound for kindly giving prizes to the beginners and intermediates, the Worshipful Company of Saddlers, who donated a set of knee pads for Ben Huson and to Polo Times for kindly sponsoring Roxy’s pony rug. Of course, it wasn’t all about winning, many personal achievements were made, from first SUPAs to first goals, first canters and gallops or even like myself, just being able to ride again for the first time in a year. Every success was celebrated enthusiastically, like when UEA won their first chukka at SUPA, when Essex’s own Will Galvin was part of the winning team in SAPA 3 or when Kent placed third in the N3 category, and everyone’s spirits remained high throughout the tournament, despite bouts of rain and wind. It wasn’t always smooth sailing, there

were a fair share of falls, loose horses and horseshoes, mishaps and memories made, like our now infamous ‘Spoons Dash’. We thought we had finished our Saturday chukkas and so half of my team (East Anglia/ Essex combined) had gone to Wetherspoons for lunch whilst the rest relaxed at the polo club. Suddenly we heard our team being called over the tannoy, resulting in frantic phone calls, “We’re on! How soon can you get here?”, a rush to get changed, running down to the horse hirers who did an amazing job to get everything ready and after SUPA kindly delayed our chukka, we made it. The team did a brilliant job to get back in time and although it was one of my favourite chukkas, it was a lesson learned; save the pub trip for the end of the day so you don’t end up playing in jeans! Taking part in the polo tournament was an incredible experience, and a heartfelt thanks must be said to Nigel, Luke, Lydia and the many other organisers, horse hirers and ponies, umpires, ambulance, vet; everyone who’s hard work allowed such an amazing weekend to happen in what are still, difficult times. When a weekend that was filled with so much love, laughter, fun and falls finally came to an end there were plenty of hugs, and a few tears shed (and not just at the thought of a night in our own beds). For many it was not just goodbye to a brilliant tournament but also to the end of our university experience as we graduate, and no one wanted that to end, or to leave behind the lifelong friends we’ve made. But what a way to end it! However, if like me you’re not ready to leave the world of SUPA there is a solution, get ready for Winter SUPA and we will see you there!

Monterosso’s high goal star Ignacio Toccalino joined La Martina’s Becky Simpson in helping to present the many prizes. However, with the Club providing a postmatch BBQ, this event was as much about having fun playing polo with friends old and new as competing to win.

It was smiles all round for the winners and competitors School holidays had an added attraction in 2021 as Guards Polo Club, supported by La Martina, hosted a competitive yet fun youth tournament at Smith’s Lawn in mid-August. Twenty young players were divided into two age groups, 13-15 years old and 8-12s. There were some familiar names from the high-goal sprinkled among the five teams such as Toccalino, Monteverde, Muzzio and

Araya, highlighting the heritage that is so prevalent in polo. The older competitors, divided into three teams, took part in four chukkas of four minutes each. La Martina won this section and their younger counterparts, the La Martina Minis, won the 8-12s competition after playing three chukkas of five minutes each. Lucio Toccalino, a member of La

Back to Basics Rules to remember for feeding

The Basic Rules of Feeding apply from high goal down to Pony Club

After a busy summer and thinking of winding down for the winter months, either for horses to go out for a well earnt holiday or horses coming in for arena polo, I felt I wanted to recap some of the basics that many of us know, but too often in the everyday rush we find ourselves forgetting and not adhering to the Basic Rules of Feeding. Too often I see the level scoop of feed creeping up to the large rounded scoop, which would almost be 1½ scoops! Dirty feed and water buckets take time to scrub, I appreciate that, but being grubby will increase the risk of bacteria or put off the fussy eater from wanting to eat. Changing diets quickly as the polo season changes so quickly, but perhaps rather than an overnight change a gradual change will reduce the risks associated with rapid changes. Aren’t the Basic Rules of Feeding for Pony Club tests? Yes, the basics are covered at Pony Club, but whether we are feeding to play in the high goal or for our children to play in the Jorrocks Pony Club Championships, the basics should still be implemented. Why do we need to think about the basics of feeding? Because we are feeding horses that are expected to perform, and in doing so we must promote overall good 66

Polo Times, September 2021

PT September2021 Inners.indd 66

health by enhancing and supporting the health of the digestive tract, thus enabling maximum performance whilst maintaining condition. Some of the basic rules are the following: 1. Plenty of Forage As you well know, fibre is something I am always going on about, the horse is designed to eat fibre very efficiently, hence evolving as a Trickle Feeder and eating up to 18 hours per day – not stabled and fed hay twice per day which is gone in an hour! Fibre helps with: * Reducing the Risk of Colic * Reducing the Risk of Ulcers * Reducing the Risk of Boredom/ Stereotypical Behaviour • An adult horse can produce up to 30 litres of acid in their stomach a day • Feeding 1.5 percent of bodyweight of forage per day is the minimum forage intake – any less will compromise the digestive tract. For context, a 500kg horse requires 7.5kgs per day. • If forage is restricted to the minimum daily requirement, split it over several feeds per day – not two.

Forage, such as hay, should not be restricted, even when travelling

2. Feed Each Horse as an Individual Every horse is different and should be fed according to their individual needs – not one feed for all! Factors to consider…. o Workload o Body Fat/Condition/Muscle o Temperament www.polotimes.co.uk

the ‘best before’ date on the back of the bag or the tag, ideally when it is delivered. Feeding out of date feed is not going to contain guaranteed nutrients as they begin to deplete over time, hence why manufacturers have a Best Before date.

3. Feeding Little & Often As mentioned above the horse is naturally a trickle feeder/grazer and their digestive tract is designed to work effectively doing so, they are not designed to be ‘meal eaters’ like us! Remember… o In relation to their size, horses have a small stomach – a rugby ball size for a 15hh horse o The stomach does not stretch, unlike ours! o The stomach works most effectively when ¾ full o Feed no more than 1½ round bowl Stubbs scoops per feed – including mix, cubes, chaff and beet o Feeding three or four times per day is ideal where you are trying to put condition on an individual o When the stomach is over filled, it does not stretch so the feed is pushed through the small intestine too quickly, reducing time for effective absorption of the feed and increasing the risk of concentrate feed reaching the hind gut – increasing the risk of colic and digestive upsets. o Overfeeding is also wasting your money! o Remember – less is more!

7. Always Provide Clean Water Water is the most important nutrient and is used by every cell in the body. Even at rest, a 500kg horse will drink around 25 litres of water each day, so thinking of when they are working and travelling this quantity will increase significantly. A horse’s water intake can vary enormously, for example, a horse grazing lush pasture, which may contain up to 80 percent water, will generally drink less than a horse fed hay which contains just 15-20 percent water. Ensuring your horses are always provided with water will reduce the risks of dehydration which can lead to an increased risk of tying up and colic and also poor performance.

4. Make Changes Gradual Changes to the diet need to be made gradually over 10 – 14 days, to allow the specialised microbes in the hind gut time to adapt to changes in the diet. Sudden changes in concentrate feed or forage (hay, haylage and grass) can cause disturbances of the hindgut bacteria/microbes leading to loose droppings and colic. Rapid changes to the diet can also have an effect on temperament – a sudden increase in energy content of the ration or moving from an unbalanced ration to

Buckets, scoops, measuring mugs and utensils used with the feed should all be kept clean

a balanced ration can increase energy, just from the horse receiving a balance of vitamins and minerals. 5. Cleanliness & Hygiene The feed room should be a clean and dry area, allowing space for the feed to be stored and not get damp, but also not be in the direct sunlight. Use bins with secure lids and sweep the feed room frequently to avoid rodents – they carry diseases that can affect horses. Buckets, scoops, measuring mugs and utensils used with the feed should all be kept clean. Too often I see dirty feed buckets – it is not hygienic, and won’t encourage a fussy horse to eat up! Keeping buckets and equipment clean will reduce the risk of cross contamination with any medications used.

Weigh Your Feed Or, more importantly, know how much your scoop holds! Cubes and mixes weigh differently, and with mixes varying in type, from cereal dense to those containing alfalfa, they also weigh differently. So, swapping a horse from a cube to a mix needs to be thought through as more mix is likely to be required to ensure the weight being fed per day is the same and the volume has been taken into consideration! Weighing your feed or knowing how much your scoop holds ensures your horses are receiving a balanced diet to support the work they are doing. Contact Lorna Edgar of Baileys Horse Feeds on lorna@baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk

6. Use High Quality Feeds When feed appears dusty or mouldy DO NOT FEED IT! It could increase the risk of respiratory or gastro-intestinal problems, so you must avoid giving it to your horses. Check

test. With new technologies, a continuous glucose measurement can easily be provided and the data can easily be shared with nutritionists, trainers and physicians.

Problem

Endogenous fuel stores (e.g., liver and muscle glycogen) are needed to deliver the energy for muscle and brain action. Variance in consumption and re-fuelling of glucose has a massive influence on day-to-day performance. Training-induced performance improvements following nutrition strategies that modulate carbohydrate availability, vary based on the type of nutrition protocol used. Every athlete has a different specific intake pattern, which may also be limited in availability or hygienic standard in foreign countries.

Peak performance at the peak is a masterpiece. Many variables have to be in perfect relation to each other so that performance, recovery, and adaptation are optimal. Well-orchestrated nutrition is one of the crucial factors and a prerequisite to give the body energy to do so. The influence of preexercise and tournament nutrition on the metabolic, physiological, and performance responses are still studied. One point is absolutely clear – requirement patterns of carbohydrates and proteins are highly individual and only continuous measurements of the player can predict its need to grant peak performance. Secondly, diabetic players have to manage their challenges with meticulous planning of eating times and monitoring their insulin intake in order to stay balanced. In the old days this was done by singular repeated blood

personal fuelling strategy. Find the fuel that provides stable and sustainable energy all day.

Recommendation

Additional insights on how to “fill the tank“ can be considerable to tune up performance or to fulfil your needs when diabetes or other special demands are present. Increasing emphasis on outcomes related training on hypertrophy and strength at the expense of other potentially more impactful performance should be considered. As consumption and intake of nutrients does not occur only once a day, the effect and impact of energy and macronutrient availability becomes an important consideration in determining the timing of additional nutrients in and around training and competition. Nutrition timing to perform in the relevant time frame seems to come a bit closer. Glucose monitors provide real-time information to your phone or smart watch

Solution

Find your glucose performance zone To train at and above your threshold, your body requires certain fuel levels. It’s important to learn what they are, maintain that zone, push the limits longer, and get bigger gains.

Playing Tips

Playing tips with Rege Ludwig The THROW and The CHOP

Looking at swing mechanics

Renowned polo coach, Rege Ludwig gives his expert advice on how to get more out of your game

Photography courtesy of Rege Ludwig

To begin this article, I reference seven goal polo player, Dr. John D. Richards as he states in his book, Observation upon the nature of the Gallop, and the Timing of the Stroke, and Form in Striking, “The arc over which this maximum arm affect is spent in striking the ball is a very small arc, and it is for this reason that the player should experience in a well-executed stroke the sensation of throwing the ball instead of striking it.” To take the throw thought further, the swing mechanics of hitting an offside fore shot, a nearside back shot, and an offside neck shot are similar to the mechanics of throwing a ball over hand, with the palm side of your hand facing in the direction the ball is to leave from your hand, which would be analogous to the ball leaving the head of the mallet. The difference being that when swinging the polo mallet, you would not be throwing forward; you would be throwing down, with the palm side of your hand, at the point of contact of the mallet head with the ball, should be facing in the direction

The Throwing Motion

70

Polo Times, September 2021

PT September2021 Inners.indd 70

the ball is to travel from the mallet head. When hitting an offside back shot, a nearside fore shot, or a nearside neck, different mechanics are taking place. Those mechanics could be compared to chopping wood with an axe, with the back side of your hand facing the ball at point of contact, and then following the ball in the direction that it is to leave from the mallet head. Depending on the shot you want to hit, the mechanics of swinging the mallet to hit the ball can be compared to either a throw over hand, or a wood chopping motion. Throwing Motion When positioning your shoulder, your arm, your wrist and your hand to swing the polo mallet to hit an offside fore shot, a nearside back shot, or an offside neck shot, you will have created the same angles at the beginning of the swing process that are created at the beginning of throwing forward, overhand. However, for polo you would not be throwing forward; you would be throwing

down. That is true because, when executing an offside fore shot, your upper body should have leaned right, your torso should have rotated clockwise causing your right shoulder to rotate back, and your upper body bending down toward the ball. From that offside fore shot hitting position, you are positioned to throw the mallet down at the polo ball for the purpose of hitting it with the mallet head. The same is true when hitting a nearside back shot, or an offside neck shot; with the difference being upper body positioning. To further clarify the throwing theory, you will not be throwing the ball. By way of the mallet handle in your hand, you will be throwing the mallet head down at the ball. The mallet head will then hit the ball in the direction the palm side of your hand is facing at point of contact with the ball. An experience you should experiment with is that of imitating throwing over hand, and notice the positioning of your shoulder, your arm, your wrist and your hand at the very beginning of the throwing process. Then notice each as it is progressing through the throwing process to feel how your shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, and hand are being used throughout the throwing process. Look to recognize similar mechanical maneuvers when swinging the mallet to hit an offside fore shot, a nearside back shot, or an offside neck shot. Relative to the offside fore shot, the first step is to lean your upper body right as though pointing your right shoulder to the ground. Then, rotate your torso clockwise causing your right shoulder to rotate back. As your right shoulder is rotating back, pull it back slightly further. As you are rotating your torso, begin bending your upper body down toward the ground to the point that, if there were a mallet in your hand, you could touch the ground with the mallet head). Having leaned right, rotated clockwise, and being bent down, place your right shoulder, arm, wrist and hand in an overhand throwing position. Now, imagine throwing the mallet head down to where the polo ball when hitting an offside fore shot. That same down throwing motion is what you should feel when executing a nearside back shot, or an offside neck shot. www.polotimes.co.uk

13/09/2021 17:26

Playing Tips Chopping Motion When hitting an offside back shot, a nearside fore shot, or a nearside neck shot, imagine you are chopping wood with an axe. The mechanics for hitting an offside back shot are quite similar to chopping wood with an axe. For the nearside fore shot and neck shot, the arm motion is still a chopping movement; however, the body positioning is different. When using a chopping motion swing to hit an offside back, a nearside fore, or a nearside neck shot; an objective should be to keep your upper arm in comfortably close to your torso, as is done when chopping wood. When hitting any of those three shots, the back side of your hand should be facing the ball at the point of contact of the mallet head with the ball, and then follow the ball in the direction the ball is to leave from the mallet head. I cannot suggest strongly enough practicing the throw and the chop motions until the feel of how each is correctly executed has been thoroughly identified. Then look to feel those same mechanical maneuvers being executed when hitting the offside fore, the nearside back or the offside neck with a (throw), or the offside back, the nearside fore, and the nearside neck with a (chop).

Reduce Back Pain In The Saddle Focusing on suppleness, stability & strength

We regularly come across players suffering with back injuries. This can be due to a variety of reasons; muscle tightness or weakness, a bad fall, ‘overall wear and tear’ or a weak core. In order to help reduce back pain we recommend focusing on increasing suppleness, stability and strength of the body.

Windmills Widen your stance and keep both legs straight, fully extend both arms and bend down to touch your right foot with your left hand then touch your left foot with your right hand. Keep repeating this ‘windmill’ action.

and rest it down. Keep the opposite arm to the top leg down on the ground ensuring the back of the shoulder stays on the ground. To enhance the stretch gently add pressure to the top knee with the other arm. Hanging Back Stretch Start in a standing position then gently roll the spine down towards the ground tucking the chin in. When you get to the bottom of the movement – hang your head and arms down. Keep the knees soft – you should feel a slight pull on the hamstrings and a stretch on the lower back.

Suppleness

Mobilising the body helps improve range of movement through the joints reducing tightness and imbalances. Adding in a daily 10 minute mobility routine will make a huge difference to flexibility and in turn reduce the risk of further injury. To keep it simple here are some mobility exercises for the back. Give them a go before you next hop into the saddle: 45 seconds on each exercise.

Child’s Pose Start on your hands and knees then sit your hips back onto your heels and lower your head to the ground. Keep your arms fully extended out infront of you. The aim is to keep your hips down on your heels and your head on the ground.

Standing Twists Stand up, soften your knees, raise arms up with a 90 degree bend at the elbow and slowly twist your torso left to right. Windmills help aid back mobility

Crocodile Arms Lie on your back with the bottom leg straight and top left bent at 90 degrees. Move the top leg across your body and bring both arms to the same side. Keeping the whole body still, open and close the arms. This movement mobilises the upper back and shoulders.

Let’s Stretch

Photography by Chukka Wellness

Aftercare is equally as important for body maintenance. Adding in a 10 minute stretching routine to your day aids in overall recovery, increased blood flow to the muscles and better flexibility. For back pain incorporate stretches that target the back, hips, glutes and hamstrings. Here are some stretches specifically for the back. Hold them for at least 1 minute.

Standing Twists are a great warm-up exercise

Strengthen Your Core

The core muscles act to stabilise your spine providing a firm support for all the activities we do. They transfer force through your body and prevent us from having undesired back, hip, knee and even neck pain. Major muscles included are the pelvic floor muscles, transverses abdominis, multifidus, internal and external obliques, rectus abdominis, erector spinae and diaphragm. Minor core muscles include the latissimus dorsi, gluteus maximus and trapezius. Here are some simple exercises to activate the core muscles. www.polotimes.co.uk

Equine Chiropractor

Matt Kenna is a fully qualified veterinary and sports chiropractor working with elite athletes and their horses. He is currently working providing consultancy to premiership football teams, high goal players and treats horses across all levels of polo from low goal to high goal. Based between Guards and Cowdray, he travels all over the south of England. This is the third in a series of articles by Matt on equine chiropractic topics, following on from his article in our April and June issues

The Human Effect

The importance of rider posture & balance

(the anterior sling muscles) to contract and tighten because we don’t activate the back ones, which in turn, end up stretching and weakening. Add into this slouching to one side and you can understand the mess we are creating just by doing what most of our jobs entail. Many of us are severely lacking a suitable amount of movement in our days and this is affecting how are bodies are able to perform day to day tasks, let alone riding and playing polo. When we look at how this affects our time in the saddle, any increase in pressure going through one side of the saddle compared to the other will load our horses asymmetrically and cause them to adjust how they move underneath us. Add this to a horse which favours one side, and repeat the movement of a trot, or the pressure of canter on that leg and I’m sure you can imagine the excessive pressure on your horse’s joints and soft tissue. I liken it to going on a run with a can of beans in one hand and six pints of milk in the other. It’s going to get uncomfortable quickly and quite soon, if repeated will cause muscle imbalances and relative weaknesses. We are rarely told to do stability work around our riding, such as riding specific Pilates and polo specific prehab, yet it is something that really needs to change if we want to prolong our own seasons and those of our horses. Trainers like India Parker-Smith of Chukka Wellness offer great preseason and ongoing training programmes that will

prepare you for the long and strenuous season. The old adage of “there’s nothing like time in the saddle” is still true and every hour spent there actively working on your riding and riding posture will benefit your horses no end, as will a variety in training, and preparing for everything that your body is subjected to in a game. The earlier you start, the more of a head start you have. My work in the Premier League has proven this point time and again. The boys come back months before the season and work on all the basic fundamentals of movement, the same should apply for polo, for the rider and the horses. I understand we are not all elite athletes, some certainly are but polo is a hobby for many of us, however, seeing the same set track day in, day out gets our horses fit but doesn’t truly make them strong. Likewise, for us riding gets us fit for the saddle but not truly balanced for our counterparts. Involving hacks with hill work, some pole work, basic dressage riding will help create a truly robust and stable horse that, come the season, will be able take a lot more workload. Heck, it may even make them cope with our alignments better, especially if we start to prepare ourselves and our horses properly! The teamwork should start between us and our horses before we even see a pitch. Web: www.mkchiro.co.uk @theequinechiro @theequinechiro

Photography by Matt Kenna

So, last time around, we discussed how our horses can be right or left-handed and how that sidedness can lead to training and performance issues for them. One thing we didn’t touch on is how we can influence and make this worse through our own lifestyle and work choices. These are highly important to consider in the wider picture of owning horses. I turn up to countless yards treating polo ponies and find their horses usually have the same problems as them. It really is worth considering your own physical balance if you are experiencing similar training problems across multiple horses such as stiffness on one side, trouble bringing the hind end under, forehandedness and total lack of performance. As a human chiropractor, one of the biggest concerns I am presented with is poor posture and the pain that it causes. We are always told as children to stand straighter and stop slouching, keep your head up as if a string is pulling it up. However, our lifestyles these days are conducive to regressing into more of a foetal/bent over position. We wake up, to sit down and have our breakfast to get in the car, where we sit again to get out into the office, whereby, you’ve got it, we sit again and then repeat the cycle in reverse after a short lunch walk. Alternatively, if our jobs are more manual, we repeat lifts and other movements on the same side, showing little thought for how we do it or what side we are doing it on. These repetitive postures cause the muscles in the front of our bodies

Poor rider posture can increase in pressure going through one side of the saddle compared to the other and will load our horses asymmetrically and cause them to adjust how they move underneath us

Moneda

Height: 15.1hh Age: 20-years-old Colour: Bay Sex: Mare Owned and played by: James Donnelly Tournament: The Glenpatrick Cup at Northern Ireland Polo Club Where is she from/breeding? Moneda is from Argentina. How long have you had her? Two years. What are her strengths? Strong ride off, quick to turn, with a good turn of speed. Photograph courtesy of NIPC

How has she gone this season? She has been great this season. She has played consistently strong in Irish tournaments and club chukkas. Has she won any other Best Playing Pony Awards? Not to my knowledge, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she had! What are your plans for her in the future? To continue to play her for as long as she is able and wants to. She knows the game better than I do and I continue to learn from her.

Does she have any special quirks? She does likes to be scratched in the morning and will point to where she likes/wants to be scratched with her nose. This can take some time! Also, she is very talkative and complains when being tacked up even though she has been for so many years!

She is also a serious Harry Houdini, and will happily release herself from the rope and any other horses next to her!

What are your plans for her in the future? She will have a bit of a break in September, then come back into work for our arena season in October playing 0-15 goal.

Where is she from/breeding? She’s a retrained racehorse. How long have you had her? We got her off the track two years ago and retrained her for polo, here at Rugby Polo Club. What are her strengths? Her temperament and speed. How has she gone this season? She’s going very well, she’s got a very mature head for her age. Has she won any other Best Playing Pony Awards? She won the Best Retrained Racehorse at the Rugby Polo Club 2021 awards.

Where is she from/breeding: She is from Argentina, she is by Machitos Libano (Durazno x Dolfina Cuartetera) out of a good mare of Magoo Laprida’s. How long have you had her? I bought her last season from Hugo Taylor, he brought her to England in 2019. What are her strengths? To look at she is the ideal type – small and compact. For a smaller horse she has a lot of power and speed, but always has a very good mouth and sides. How has she gone this season? She took a few weeks at the start of the season to get settled and in a nice rhythm, but from June onwards she has been very good, and as the season goes on she has been getting better. Has she won any other Best Playing Pony Awards? This is her first Best Playing

Pony prize with me. What are your plans for her in the future? Hopefully she can carry on being an important horse in my string. She is one I will breed from.

Does she have any special quirks? She isn’t the most straightforward on the field. She isn’t a fan of line outs but as long as you keep her moving she is fine. Describe her in three words? Speed, handle, comfort.

What are your plans for her in the future? She will keep playing for King Power

Describe her in three words? Quick, small, handy.

Plover Height: 15.1hh Age: 14-years-old Colour: Black Sex: Mare Owned and played by: Timi Badiru Tournament: Gannon Final at the Pony Club Championships How long have you had her? Two seasons, going on three.

How has she gone this season? Plover has gone very well this season I could not be happier with her to be honest, she started the season playing at least twice in most games and she is now playing no more than once in the games. This is simply because I don’t want to put her under more pressure than she is already is – she deserves an easy time. Has she won any other Best Playing Pony Awards? No, she has not won any other awards.

Photograph by Matt Hayden

What are her strengths? One of the best things about Plover is how explosive she is, very quick of the mark and always gives me a 100 percent every time I ride her. She also has extremely good sides on her, she can always turn before the others.

What are your plans for her in the future? My plans for Plover are to play her for as long as I feel she wants to play for, then I will retire her as soon as I feel she has stopped enjoying it. Then in all probability I will put her in foal.

Does she have any special quirks? Plover tends to get quite fiery at times but just wants to please all the time.

What are her strengths? Endurance and a big heart. How has he/she gone this season? She has been a solid part of my string and willingly participated in any activity that I want to do! This was the first year of sponsorship for Clé de Peau Beauté at Guards Polo Club’s Ladies Charity Polo Tournament. Seven teams had entered this year’s competition, with UAE Polo securing the title, while Nipas-ESP took the Subsidiary Final. All the players headed home with some gifts, including Clé de Peau Beauté’s iconic anti-ageing night cream La Crème and complimentary facial treatments in the Clé de Peau Beauté Radiant Suite, Harrods, Knightsbridge. The luxury skincare and makeup brand chose UNICEF UK as the beneficiary on finals day, raising several thousand pounds through various fundraising opportunities including a live auction in the Clubhouse.

In association with Aprés Polo

Charles Whittington is a Software Engineer by trade, going back to the early days of computing. He owned and ran a software company for 35 years and has retired now three times! His latest sortie out of retirement is into the UK Space Industry, running projects facilitating the next generation of satellite communications technology. Charles has also been a School Governor in the maintained sector for 30 years, and is now Vice-Chairman of the Thomas Telford Multi-Academy Trust which has built five secondary schools and two primary schools in the West Midlands. He and Joanna were married in 1975 and have three children, Edward, Harry and Flora who all enjoyed Pony Club Polo. Charles has been Chairman of Pony Club Polo for seven years; stating that it, “Feels right to put something back, especially now our grandchildren are playing” What is your biggest passion and why? Too many to name! Family, of course; well run engineering innovation; excellence in education; music from any century, and of course Pony Club Polo! What is your all time best polo memory? Three! I don’t think we ever had enough pony power to win Pony Club Gannon – Edward came closest, losing in the final to Mark Tomlinson on a penalty shootout – but all three of our children, Edward, Harry and Flora won the Jaguar Trophy – the Gannon Subsidiary. Great memories! Who were/are your favourite teammates? The family! I only really played in one polo tournament. It was a family tournament at the Hartley’s. Flora and I shared the No. 1 shirt – we won! I truly hope there are no photos!

Favourite song/album? Too difficult – too many! But The Best of Eric Clapton (Duck/Reprise, 1999) would be very hard to beat. If on my own for a long time, almost any recording of Bach’s St Matthew Passion.

Favourite celebrity and why? Sir Michael Parkinson – just the greatest interviewer of all time and got the very best out of other celebrities!

Favourite food/dish? Too difficult – too many! Probably local lamb, roasted, with vegetables from the garden (and I’ll make the gravy) followed by Joanna’s home made blackcurrant ice-cream!

Best holiday destination & activity The North Cornwall Coast. Bucket and spade with the grandchildren and cliff walks with the dogs.

Favourite hobby outside of polo? National Hunt Racing. This picture is the Harry Whittington Racing Club with Peel of Bells winning at Taunton. Best pony and why? I only really had one horse and she definitely wasn’t a polo pony! Bess, Joanna’s cob, who took me hunting for ten years (not the other way round!). Centre of this family picture.

Which sports do you like outside of polo? I play tennis, pick up with my home bred labs, and Joanna and I have a leg in a racehorse with Harry Whittington Racing. I’ll watch practically any sport (except maybe netball!). Favourite film and why? A Fistful of Dollars (1964). It plays rather corny and overly macho now, but when it was generally released in 1967 it was raw, edgy and innovative. It has a superb cast, cinematography, direction and music. Clint Eastwood’s fee of $15,000 was very good value! 88

Polo Times, September 2021

PT September2021 Inners.indd 88

Most prized possession? Any of my grandfather’s eclectic collection of scientific instruments, but possibly the circular sliderule.

Are you passionately superstitious? No – Engineers have to trust the laws of physics! Describe yourself in three words… Plays the long game (that’s four!). One thing which would surprise us about you? I play the organ in church! www.polotimes.co.uk
