POLYMERS Communiqué l June - July 2021
CONTENTS June - July 2021 Issue 7.5 l
Under the Cover
The direction as regards sustainability is clear...it’s time to get our
intent and content to operate in sync; it’s critical as the point in contention is our own ‘gen-next’! We all can and we all will!
We all delightfully see ourselves on the waning side of the 2nd COVID wave. Speculations rife about, if at all, when would the third wave hit us...until then, it’s time to give all attention to business! Another area that deserves utmost attention is ‘sustainability’. So, at POLYMERS Communiqué, for the first time in 7 years, present back-to-back issues on the same theme, clearly highlight the growing need to give consideration to this facet in a manner that it truly deserves. Ab nahi toh kab?

There is a growing awareness that we need to change the prevailing situation by adopting practices of - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3 Rs) in our products by design, production systems and then influencing / facilitating consumer behaviour through EPR. Businesses have realised that for its long term sustenance, it has to dem onstrate its commitment to environmental sustainability and make it a part of their business strategies. This commitment to environmental sustainability has also begun to influence buyer behaviour.

present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. It’s our only ticket to the survival of mankind on the planet. I have held for a very long time that sustainable productio n is a huge money spinner in the long run. And, sustainable consumption helps eliminate waste, reduce poverty and hunger, and conserves resources. When resources exhaust, earth will no longer supp ort humans. So, let us be a little selfish in prese rving our species and adopt sustainability as the only currency of the future.

The high melt strength of LDPE has

Chemically Recycled PET Chips Q. From the initial foray into manufacturing woven fabrics and sacks to the conglomerate of today, please share with us your experience and key learnings. The key learnings have been to work in the B2B domain, dealing in volume, and maintaining the
quality with sustainable outcomes. If business is conducted keeping in mind the environment, human beings and transparent governance, it will surely go a long way.
Q. What prompted the company to switch gears and keep adding to the ever-increasing product portfolio? Since inception, we have been committed to offering a wide range of sustainable products to the society.
Beginning with a progressive vision, we have kept on learning and continually adding capacities and qualities, and widening our product portfolio.
Q. A varied portfolio right from recycled PET chips and flakes to masterbatches to fibre and yarn requires a strong technical team and an equally up-to-date research laboratory. What strategy do you follow in this regard? We have had a strong technical team since inception. The important thing is that our key people have been with us since inception. fast-paced environmental devolution in India, it is a guiding step to stop this
devolution and every brand
owner, producer and plastic importer should look up on EPR and should fulfill their EPR compliance to be a
better sustainable company.
‘Extended Producer Responsibility’ means the responsibility of a producer for the environmentally sound management of their product till end of its life, which is
also known as EPR in common language. After successful implementation of EPR in e-waste, under Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 and successive
amendments, the Government of India has mandated EPR for plastics waste on the producers, importers and brand owners (i.e. PIBOs) who introduce plastics waste in the system.
Under the EPR, PIBOs are made responsible to minimise generation of plastics
waste, take steps to stop littering of plastics waste, ensure source segregation and proper storage of segregated waste at source and channelisation of the same segregated waste to recycling facility with engagement of local bodies or agencies authorised by local bodies.
Before the concept of EPR in India, the responsibility for plastics waste collection, segregation and channelisation to the recycling channel was lying with local bodies, gram panchayats and agencies appointed by them. It was largely managed by funding from the state government or central government. But due to absence of expertise in the subject, efforts were not yielding any results.
Thinking Out Loud It is so nicely said that a creator knows his creation very well and it is applicable here too. A product manufacturer or a brand owner controls the designing, manufacturing and packaging of any of the plastic introduced in the system.
They have direct influence and best knowledge about every aspect of the plastic packaging, including recyclability of the same.

In fact, the word ‘biodegradable’ is loosely used
without fully knowing what it connotes. The accumulation of waste, which is commonly encountered as Municipal Solid Waste

cost that we have to pay for hampering the environment. Waste

New Two-stage Process by ENGEL Improves the Efficiency of Recycling Processes
Processing Plastic Flakes Directly With a new process, ENGEL makes it possible to process plastics waste as flakes in injection moulding directly after grinding. Since a complete process step, pelletising, is eliminated, the innovation significantly improves cost efficiency in plastics recycling. At its live e-symposium 2021 from 22nd to 24th June, ENGEL presented the new two-stage process to a trade audience for the first time and demonstrated its great potential. The new process also offers benefits in the production of very large and thick-walled components with high shot weights.

“We are excited to see how fast the market has grown and developed in India in recent years. India has
the potential to advance from the existing predominately extrusion coating market and is now
becoming a global cast film player,” opines Alicia Cloeren, in dialogue with POLYMERS Communiqué.
Q. How do you see your extrusion solutions contributing to the circular economy? We are constantly contributing to new technology and processes to help producers harness the latest polymer technologies and make
plastics a more environmentally-friendly product, while maintaining other unique properties that make plastics so essential in so many industries.
Q. A change that you embarked on and that worked for you in the COVID times... We were fortunate enough to work in the office, socially distanced of
course, and we did not have to close our manufacturing facilities in the USA. While supply chain disruption is still an ongoing challenge, I
would say the largest adjustment for us was to move from in-person meetings and events to learning to utilise Microsoft Teams to connect with our customers and industry partners.
Q. Identifying the right extrusion process is getting complicated these days...how do you assist a customer? Cloeren supplies to a vast number of market segments and, through our many years of industry experience across such a wide variety of
polymer products, we are able to apply our know-how to assist our customers with unique innovative tooling solutions.
Never stop evolving and continue to innovate
to remain the foremost extrusion die and
feedblock manufacturer.
Q. Do you see further expanding your product line? We are always looking to expand into new markets and evolve our product offerings. As a high precision
design and manufacturing company, producers come to us for solutions and we find a way to create
the equipment they need.
Q. How do you see India as a market evolving for you in the next 3 years? We are excited to see how fast the market has grown
and developed in India in recent years. India has the
potential to advance from the existing predominately extrusion coating market and is now becoming a global cast film player.
Q. You come with a long history (since 1975); please share with us your biggest takeaways in business. Never stop evolving and continue to innovate to remain the foremost extrusion die and feedblock manufacturer.
Q. A management practice that is very close to your ideology... Lead by example.

have bought a machine, it should run at full speed, full capacity.
Most ECL lines run at 80% speed in
the industry; my factory also used to
run it initially at 70 - 80% speed. When questioned the operator as to why is it
that you do not run at 100% speed, they came out with the feedback like bonding issues occurs. These issues can be
addressed by changing the material or
improving it. After implementing these changes, we now ensure that 100%
speeds are reached and maintained so as to obtain maximised output. The first ECL machine was designed for 250 mts/min, but right now we are running it on 260 - 275 mts/min.
To summarise, we are running the ECL
lines at 110% - 120% of the name plate capacity. As far as the blown film lines are concerned, we are running them at 100% output levels.

Leadership, with all its beautiful aspects and
vast benefits, is not easy. With its many rewards, it comes with its share of anxieties born out of
responsibilities that it brings. William Shakespeare
said it beautifully in the King Henry IV; ‘Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown’. The space at the top is always small. There are always many trying to reach the summit. Staying at the top can be more demanding than the struggle to get there.
John Kenneth Galbraith, economist, diplomat,
former US Ambassador to India and educationist said, “All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common: it was the willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their
people in their time. This, and not much else, is the
essence of leadership.” No doubt that is very much a part of leadership. But the fact is that leaders are

Industry Beckons Q. The pandemic has posed big challenges to the business fraternity in terms of survival and, as an industry, plastics too had to go through challenging times. How has the industry fared, your views? The very source of plastics, which is the petrochemicals,
has done very well in terms of maintaining production and providing feedstock for the plastics industry. In terms of the processors, except for a few products,
most of them have registered a very good growth as the application of plastics have played a very pivotal role during the pandemic. All of us have had our
share of issues and challenges; however, by nature, this industry is resilient and has bounced back very
well. To sum it up, I think the industry has done very well in these turbulent times.
Q. Any new schemes, initiatives or policies that could be of help to the industry? The policies mooted by the government as regards the financial sector and human resource policies have definitely benefitted the industry. Bank loans have been fast tracked
owing to easier documentation process, lower interest rates and a significant amount
of capital have substantially helped the
industry. New policies in human resource have
helped the labour force.

valued today at about USD 50 billion which is likely to increase to about USD 85 billion by 2030. One of the important trends in the 21st century is
the drive towards ecologically sound (e.g. recyclable, degradable) products.
While adhesives, since they are typically used in small amounts, are not at the forefront of this trend, recyclability and degradability are likely to
become more important in the future. Since very often adhesives are found on the surface of other polymers (in the form of labels, stickers etc.), ‘green’
adhesives could make either recycling or disposal through composting easier
and safer for the entire product. The goal is to reduce the environmental impact of the production processes and to implement eco-design concepts that will allow bonded parts to be reused or recycled through the development of adhesives that could be degraded and de-bonded on demand.

unique, as there are so many pegs around which the story of any start-up can be written. The core narrative is kind of institutionalised.

Plastics to the Rescue Plastic as a material is very versatile and has played a crucial role in saving
millions of lives during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It would have been impossible to fight the virus without the mass availability of personal protective

Weekend Delights Friday night to Monday morning, a time to unwind, rejuvenate and be geared to face another grueling week. Each one of us use this ‘my time’ is different ways. And why not, weekend is a time for expressing ourselves. We all have known the personalities featured here as astute business stalwarts; as life is more than just business, we at POLYMERS Communiqué, have started this section called ‘WEEKEND DELIGHTS’. Live life... Madhav Kamat
Chairman & Managing Director, Chirag Pack (India) Pvt. Ltd.
Every day is a new challenge for me in my professional and personal life. On weekdays, I walk and jog to keep my mind and body fit. But if it’s the weekend, my physical activities are a bit more than the regular weekdays. I enjoy a lot with my grandson; it makes me forget all the worries and tensions in the world...I feel like a child when I play with him. Trust me, it gives immense pleasure and energy to push through the next week. There is also a weekly tele call or a video call to all the near and dear ones in the extended family and to check their well-being. If we have the liberty of an extended weekend, we make it a point to go outdoors for some events or a picnic.
Tushar Shah
Managing Partner,
Arihant Gujarat Plastic Industries
Weekends are very different when you live in a small town – in some way, all days seem like weekends! For me, badminton is a daily activity. I really enjoy this sport and feel that it sets me up well for the working day or working week! Other activities that I also indulge in are cycling, nature watching and cooking. Spending time with family is an integral part of my weekend!

POLYMERS Communiqué l June - July 2021
Arpit Goel Director,
Asepack Laminates Ltd.
Weekend means it’s time to relax and bring an end to a hectic week. My weekend starts with catching up on lost sleep, spending time with friends and family. I love to go on short road trips; they help in rejuvenating myself. Weekend helps me to sleep with satisfaction and wake up with determination.
Karan K. Chandan Director,
KK Kompounding Tech Giant Ltd.
Also known as ‘KKC’ in the automotive world, being an auto-enthusiast, my passion is to drive, review cars to produce unadulterated automotive content for my YouTube channel: KKC On A-Motive. Hence my weekends are simple; either I’m on a long drive with my friends / family or making car videos. This weekend activity really recharges me and helps me stay creative.
Rajan K. Velani
Director,
Plastene India Ltd.
Unlike others, I don’t have a hobby of cooking; I also don’t do any specific exercises on weekends. I spend my Sunday giving something to the society what the society has given me. With the blessings of Param Gurudev (Yug Diwakar, Rashtrasant Pujya Shri Namramuni Maharaj Sahebji) and with his inspiration, I go to various ‘gaushalas’ (Shelter home for unclaimed cows) and feed them. We also go to various places where birds (especially pigeons) come to feed, and provide grains and seeds for them. There are many other activities also done like providing books and study materials to the underprivileged children who want to study, provide ration kits, medicines to the needy and many more. It gives us immense pleasure and self-satisfaction doing this service.
