Editor’s LETTER
As we embark upon another pool season, I’m incredibly grateful to be part of this industry. That’s because to me, swimming pools aren’t just merely a product, they’ve always been part of an ideal. One of the cornerstones of the American success story has always been owning a pool. That’s because from the very beginning back in the 40’s and 50’s, people in this country recognized that having a pool in their backyard would be life changing.
Pools have always been more than just a mere luxury. They’re a symbol of achievement, a testament to hard work and prosperity. The shimmering waters reflect not just the sun’s rays, but also the dreams and aspirations of the people who cherish them. For decades, pools have been the epicenter of family gatherings and the backdrop for countless memories.
A s we navigate yet another tough pool season, it’s important to remember the impact we have on society as an industry. What we do joins families together and brings joy to so many people’s lives. It’s why our industry embodies the very spirit of innovation, and continues to push new boundaries that redefine the outdoor living experience.
Each summer I’m reinvigorated with genuine admiration for the professionals who are responsible for maintaining that grand American ideal. In whatever capacity you serve in this industry, know that you are a part of something great and noble. What you do changes people’s lives.
So, dear readers, while we’re focused on the day to day of accomplishing our tasks, let us carry with us the profound appreciation for the role that swimming pools play in shaping the lives of our families and our communities. Together, let’s make this summer one to remember, filled with laughter, joy, and memorable moments that last a lifetime.

The Blame Game: WHEN PLASTER GOES SIDEWAYS
BY JOE TRUSTY
We’ve all seen the posts on social media. Something goes wrong on a plaster job or startup and that’s when the finger pointing begins and the question of who’s to blame comes up..
Pool plastering is one of the few aspects of the trade that is a mix of both art and science. Sure there are set standards and recommended guidelines to follow, but the actual application of plaster, how the startup is performed, and the maintenance which occurs after the fact is where true artistry comes into play.
The plastering process can transform a backyard into a beautiful oasis, but when things go awry, it can lead to a cascade of blame.
Homeowners blame the builders, builders blame the plasterers,
plasterers blame the pool techs, and round and round the circle goes. Today, we explore some of the common challenges and misconceptions about plastering, with insights from industry expert Jon Temple, owner of Tempool Inc. and educator with Watershape University.
The rise of social media has significantly impacted how issues in pool plastering are perceived and addressed. Homeowners and builders frequently turn to platforms like Facebook and Instagram to share photos of pool plaster jobs that show signs of problems such as stains, cracks, delamination, and other defects. These posts often ignite the
blame game, with various parties pointing fingers at each other, exacerbating an already complex situation.
Temple who often responds to questions from homeowners and builders addressed the issue, “Sometimes there’s some bickering, there’s a little bit of arguing, which I love. People sometimes get offended when somebody critiques them or something they did, but that’s how we learn,” he remarked.
Social media can be a doubleedged sword: it offers a platform for education and sharing best practices, but it can also fuel conflicts and misunderstandings.
8 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2
Temple candidly discussed the finger-pointing which occurs when pool plastering doesn’t go as planned. “Our whole industry is about that blame game,” Temple notes. “In the past, when I came up, you built the whole swimming pool. Now it’s all subbed out. There’s a lot of moving pieces involved in making the homeowners happy.”
“When I just started plastering, and I didn’t know what caused a job to go sideways, I’ve said it a million times, ‘Hey, that’s bad startup, that’s bad chemistry, that’s bad maintenance’. That got old real quick because you’re still in that fight. You’re still meeting those homeowners after work and they’re mad. So we started figuring out what could we do to create a better process,” explained Temple.
Temple, who has spent the better part of his career as an applicator, says he’s seen plaster jobs go awry for any number of reasons over the years. However, since the introduction of newer pool building methods, he has seen an increase in the number of photos showing faulty application making their way to social media.
“Over half of my career, we had wet mix shotcrete. It started out at around 4,000 psi but after curing, you know, was in the 5,000 or 6,000 psi range and we had perfect shotcrete. Well, about 15 years ago, a lot of the industry got into the dry mix. With that came a lot of challenges,” noted Temple.
“There were a lot of cut corners which created shells that didn’t hydrate correctly. Lots of structural problems, weepers, bleeders. The switch also caused more chemistry issues. Lots of staining and lots of hydration. So what we went after first was how to stop that. That’s when we started using a perma coat or a bonding agent..”
“If you’re going to paint a house a certain color, you paint a primer on first so that it all looks even. When you look at a brand new pool or remodel, there are maybe three, four, sometimes five different colors happening. Tile line, build out, dry spots, wet spots. You’ve got water standing. You’ve got a lot of different things happening and it’s hard to make something look consistent if you don’t have a clean surface to start with,” explained Temple.
“We started spraying on three coats of bonding agent,” explained Temple, “and we found out that this helped our plaster dry more evenly. We didn’t have a sunny wall drying faster than the other wall or gunite with more sand in it, drying faster than a spot with weepers.”
One of the most frequent complaints Temple has identified on the maintenance side of plaster issues has to do with acid washing. “I was really concerned about muriatic acid,” said Temple, “specifically, about sending people out to apply it. At first, I didn’t know the effects that muriatic acid had on pool finishes, but I knew the effect it had on my employees and on my equipment. Ultimately, I knew that muriatic acid was not my friend. We started looking for other products that could take its place. We started using what we call Pool Wash. That took the place of the muriatic acid.” said Temple, “Scaling pools went away, hot startups went away. We had an incredible-looking pool from day one.”
With good education and proper communication between applicators and service professionals, Temple believes pool professionals can become proactive rather than reactive in their approach. “In the end, I think that it’s all of our faults. It’s not one group’s fault and I think the best thing to do is make the service company your partner. I tell the service techs what I’m doing, and why. We included them in on our education and figured out we could do better as a group, rather than blaming each other,” emphasized Temple.

Reviews Are Revenue: THE POWER OF ONLINE FEEDBACK
BY SCOTT REYNOLDS
In the digital age, where the internet serves as the ultimate marketplace, the significance of online reviews cannot be overstated. For businesses, particularly service-oriented ones like pool companies, harnessing the power of online feedback is not just about reputation management— it’s about driving revenue and fostering customer loyalty. My pool company, Purpose Pools, is a leader in our local market. It’s because we’ve mastered this art through an ingenious approach that seamlessly integrates customer feedback into its operations.
I’m a pool company owner myself and I believe that technicians are more than just service providers—they are brand ambassadors of the company. Armed with personalized business cards bearing their
names and the business’s direct line for seamless communication, my company sets the stage for exceptional customer experience from the get-go. But it’s what lies on the flipside of these cards that is truly what helps set us apart from the competition.
Embedded within the design of each business card is a QR code, a seemingly simple addition with profound implications. This QR code serves as a gateway to our Google business page, where clients can effortlessly leave feedback about their experiences with the company. With just a quick scan, clients are transported to a platform where they can amplify their positive experiences for the benefit of others—a digital word-of-mouth engine that helps drive our company’s reputation forward.
What makes the approach truly
ingenious is our recognition of the symbiotic relationship between customer satisfaction and online reviews. By streamlining the feedback process and making it easily accessible, we not only ensure that satisfied customers have a platform to voice their praise but also leverages those reviews as a powerful marketing tool.
But our pool company doesn’t stop there. Recognizing the value of incentivizing positive feedback, we offer tangible rewards to our technicians for every five-star review they receive.
This not only motivates our employees to deliver exceptional service but also aligns their interests with those of the company—a win-win scenario where customer satisfaction directly translates into tangible benefits for both parties.
10 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2
To harness the power of online reviews, it’s smart to employ a multifaceted strategy that combines physical marketing, digital communication, technician engagement, and continuous improvement, providing multiple pathways to capture positive reviews.
My firm starts with traditional marketing methods, utilizing door hangers, flyers, and postcards embedded with QR codes that link directly to our Google business page. These materials are distributed strategically after service calls or sent as thank-you postcards. This approach ensures that customers have easy and immediate access to our review page, allowing them to quickly and conveniently leave feedback while their positive experience is still fresh in their minds.
In our digital efforts, follow-up emails and text messages are crucial touchpoints for engaging with customers post-service. These messages include a personalized thank-you note and a direct link to the review page, gently prompting customers to share their experiences.
By reaching customers through their preferred communication channels, we increase the likelihood of receiving timely reviews. Social media posts further amplify this effort by regularly highlighting positive reviews, creating a community of satisfied customers who are encouraged to share their experiences publicly. This not only builds our online presence but also leverages positive feedback to attract new customers.
Additionally, incorporating a “How was our service?” link in our email signatures provides a subtle yet constant reminder for customers to leave reviews. This method ensures that every email interaction with our customers serves as an opportunity to capture feedback, increasing the chances of receiving positive reviews over time.
The impact of our unique approach goes beyond mere numbers on a review platform—it permeates every aspect of business operations. By fostering a culture where customer feedback is not just valued but actively sought after, we’ve created a feedback loop that drives continuous improvement and innovation. Every review becomes a learning opportunity, helping the company identify areas of strength and areas for growth, ultimately leading to a more refined and responsive service offering.
Moreover, the visibility and credibility afforded by a robust online presence can’t be understated. In an industry where trust is paramount, positive reviews serve as social proof, reassuring potential customers of the quality and reliability of services. This, in turn, translates into increased conversion rates and customer retention—a virtuous cycle where positive interactions breed more positive experiences.
But perhaps the most significant impact of my pool company’s approach lies in our ability to cultivate a sense of community and trust. By empowering customers to share their experiences and by rewarding employees for delivering exceptional service, we’re fostering genuine connections that extend beyond mere transactions. Customers aren’t just patrons—they become advocates, eager to spread the word about our excellence.
In an era where online reputation can make or break a business, I hope the process my firm Purpose Pools uses helps pool professionals see how they can leverage the power of online feedback to drive revenue and build lasting relationships. By integrating customer feedback seamlessly into its operations and incentivizing positive reviews, your pool company can transform the traditional feedback loop into a powerful engine for growth and success.

Pool Noodle Hail Hack GOES VIRAL ON SOCIAL MEDIA
BY ALISE EVERTON | PHOTO CREDITS: FACEBOOK: TEXAS INSPIRATION, SARA DAVIS
As severe weather continues to batter various parts of the United States, residents are coming up with creative ways to protect their property. Wednesday was particularly active, with three significant regions experiencing powerful thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, and potential tornadoes. Areas from the Plains to the East Coast have faced these severe weather threats since the beginning of Spring.
Amidst these turbulent weather patterns, a peculiar trend has emerged: car owners, many of whom don’t even own swimming pools, are flocking to pool stores. Their mission? To stock up on pool noodles and pool floats—not for swimming, but for
protecting their cars from hail damage.
Social media has been buzzing with this innovative hack. Across the country, folks are sharing images and videos of their vehicles equipped with colorful pool noodles strapped to roofs, hoods, and trunks. In some cases, inflatable pool floats and even air mattresses are being used to shield cars from the destructive force of hailstones.
Hail can cause significant damage to vehicles, denting the bodywork, smashing windows, and potentially costing owners thousands of dollars in repairs. Traditional protective measures, like covered parking, are not always available, especially during sudden and unexpected storms. This has led to a surge
in demand for makeshift solutions that can be quickly and affordably deployed.
This unconventional method of car protection gained traction thanks to social media platforms where users posted their inventive solutions. Hashtags like #HailHack are trending, with folks sharing their setups and offering tips on the best ways to secure the noodles and floats.
The viral nature of this trend speaks to the power of community ingenuity in the face of natural challenges. It also highlights the increasingly erratic weather patterns being experienced across the country, pushing people to think outside the box to protect their property.
12 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2
Do The Pool Noodles Really Work?
Using pool noodles to protect your vehicle during a hail storm offers a lightweight and flexible option. These foam tubes can absorb some impact from small to medium-sized hailstones if arranged properly. However, they need to be securely attached to the vehicle to cover vulnerable areas such as the roof, hood, and trunk. The challenge lies in ensuring the noodles stay in place during the storm, as wind and hail can easily dislodge them if they are not fastened well.
Pool floats, on the other hand, might actually provide better protection due to their thicker and more substantial foam or inflatable materials.
Their larger surface area compared to pool noodles allows for more comprehensive coverage. Securing pool floats may be somewhat easier because of their size, but they still require proper fastening to prevent them from shifting or being blown away in strong winds. Despite their potential for better coverage, the effectiveness of pool floats depends on how well they are attached to the vehicle.
Car covers specifically designed to resist hail are a more reliable alternative. These covers are constructed with materials that can better withstand the force of hailstones, providing more consistent protection without the need for improvised securing methods. While more costly, they are designed for ease of use and effectiveness.
Parking your vehicle in a garage or under a carport remains the best form of protection against hail. This method eliminates the risk of damage entirely by providing a solid, immovable barrier between your vehicle and the hail.
When such structures are unavailable, using thick blankets or heavy-duty tarps can be another practical alternative. These materials can be more easily secured over the vehicle compared to pool noodles or floats and can offer better overall coverage and protection.
As more severe weather is predicted in the coming months, pool stores are noticing an uptick in sales of pool noodles and floats, often seeing their stock depleted as quickly as it arrives. Some stores have even started marketing these items specifically for hail protection, tapping into the growing demand.
While it remains uncertain if this hack actually works, car owners desperate to protect their investments are willing to give anything a try. After all, in the face of golf ball-sized hail, a little foam and air might just be the car’s best friend—or at least make for a great story at the next summer barbecue.

Creating Commercial-Sized SWIM CURRENT
BY JOE TRUSTY
PHOTOS: AQUA NICK,TYPHOON TEXAS NEPTUNE ISLAND / JUNGALA
Swiftly ascending as a premier choice in the pool industry, and renowned for creating adventure pools, swim-in-place pools, and lazy rivers; Riverflow by Current Systems has established its reputation as the go-to solution. However, their prowess extends beyond private backyards; as evident by their frequent use in commercial pools.
The Riverflow pump itself is the brainchild of Peter Davidson, President of Current Systems. “I patented the pump back in the late eighties under a different brand name,” Davidson explains, “but the axial flow pump and technology and accessories have moved forward over the past three decades. We started off with the application being focused on
countercurrent swimming and have moved into the lazy river application over the last decade.”
Manufactured in Ventura, California, these innovative pumps and associated equipment serve a wide array of markets. “We ship to domestic and international markets ranging from residential installations on up to international water parks and resort hotels,” Davidson continues.
Modern commercial pool projects demand powerful and reliable equipment, particularly for applications that require managed current. Davidson highlights what sets Riverflow apart in this regard: “The product that we produce is pretty much the only one in the industry capable of that kind of flow rate and very suitable for the
applications that it’s used for in countercurrent swimming and creating current lazy rivers.”
Riverflow’s success in the commercial market sector can also attributed to their commitment to accessibility and collaboration during project planning. “Probably one of the biggest assets is, I think, first our accessibility by builders and engineers and architects and designers,” Davidson notes.
“For technical hydraulic help on the project, we use sophisticated engineering software, a computational fluid dynamic product that illustrates velocities, pressures, streamlines, vectoring within the lazy rivers and even within swim-in-place pools,” said Davis.
14 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2
This advanced software allows for precise visualization of water movement, ensuring all stakeholders have a clear understanding of the project’s hydraulic dynamics. “We can bring the client, the contractor, the designer, whoever else, and us all on the same page with a visualization of what the current is actually going to be doing within that geometry,” Davidson explains. This collaborative approach facilitates effective communication and allows for design adjustments to meet client expectations perfectly.
The ongoing trend towards incorporating moving water into contemporary pool designs is driven by the desire to recreate resort-like experiences. “Clients that are building these resort-style pools in their backyard have had prior experiences on vacation. They’ve experienced this moving water that moves faster than just a lazy river,” Davidson shares. This desire for dynamic water features has led to the development of pools where “the event doesn’t end,” keeping the excitement and fun alive with continuous movement.
One of the challenges with traditional highpowered pool equipment is audible and visual intrusion. Riverflow’s innovative design tackles these issues head-on. Phil De Tournillon, Vice President of Current Systems, elaborates: “One of the things that what Peter created some 25, 30 years ago was a piece of equipment that at the end of everything being installed, the builder and the homeowner and the client come back and they say, ‘I thought it was going to be noisy. It is so quiet.’”
This quiet operation is a hallmark of Riverflow’s technology, setting it apart from conventional pumps. “The contractors and everyone are just so pleased to know that that piece of equipment doesn’t put out the kind of noise that other pumps that they’re used to are creating,” De Tournillon adds.
Davidson further emphasizes the unobtrusive design: “The design criteria with this system was to make it flush mount, inobtrusive and quiet. So we checked those boxes, and we also make a variety of nozzles to actually pinpoint the application for spreading current out more quickly, for using it as a water curtain to corral or separate static from moving water in the same body of water.”
In the commercial sector, Riverflow distinguishes itself with innovative solutions tailored to large-scale applications. Davidson explains, “In the commercial pools, basically the larger lazy rivers, we sort of introduced a method of providing propulsion for these rivers. We term it distributed pumping.”
Traditionally, large lazy rivers relied on massive pumps housed in a central location, which posed significant risks if the pump failed. Riverflow’s distributed pumping approach mitigates this risk. “We put our small, quiet pumps distributed along the river at intervals that are appropriate for creating the kind of propulsion required,” Davidson states. This ensures that even if one or two pumps require maintenance, the river continues to flow uninterrupted.
POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2 15
Riverflow’s technology has been instrumental in numerous highprofile projects at various hotels, resorts, and water parks.
Phil De Tournillon recounts the success at Typhoon Texas: “Today, it’s rated as one of the top water parks in the United States. Their design team created a tremendous project in construction, and C.T. Brannon specced us into that project. They’ve had nothing but positive results for all the years and the reliability of our product to continue to function the way it does.”
Another notable project is the Jungala water park in Cancun. Davidson highlights the efficiency achieved: “We were able to reduce the power requirement, electrical
consumption by 40% to achieve the same flow rate as the 40 hp pumps. The engineers and designers on this project were delighted to make a savings in equipment cost, installation cost, and power consumption during operation.”
Riverflow’s pumps have also been utilized in prestigious locations like the Atlantis Resort in Dubai and Margaritaville in Nassau, Bahamas, further cementing their reputation for excellence in the international commercial market.

Pool Goods: From Brick & Mortar Pool Store
TO ONLINE RETAIL
In the competitive world of swimming pool retail, standing out requires more than just having the right products. For Jake Riggs and his family-owned business, the key to thriving in both physical and digital realms lies in their deep industry knowledge and unwavering commitment to customer service. PoolGoods. com, their latest venture, exemplifies how traditional businesses can successfully transition to the online market while maintaining their core values.
Jake Riggs, the dynamic force behind Pool Goods, shared insights into this journey, reflecting on the company’s rich history and strategic shift towards e-commerce. “We have three physical retail locations here in the South Carolina, North Carolina area,” Riggs explained. “Really, what began this journey for us 35 years ago was my dad
BY MARCUS PACKER PHOTOS CREDITS: JAKE RIGGS
and uncle started selling walk-in spas. They turned that into a pool business, and eventually a service business. We’ve always adapted to the industry’s needs, which led us to this venture.”
Transitioning From Brick & Mortar to E-Commerce
The catalyst for this transition was simple yet profound: offering customers a path of least resistance. “What we’ve noticed is our customers wanted another way to buy from us,” Riggs said. “Whether that be actual tangible products or just our service. That’s really what launched PoolGoods.com. We started the site because it’s an avenue that the customers want to be met at. Now we’re accessible 24/7, regardless if our retail or building operation isn’t open.”
Riggs’ background in the tech industry provided him with unique insights, making the
digital leap smoother. “For me personally, it was a natural fit. I came from a tech distribution company, and I took what I learned there on the businessto-business side I brought over here. My family, on the other hand, had to adapt from their roles in construction and sales. We realized convenience is key. I asked a long-time customer why they weren’t buying chemicals from us, and they said it was just more convenient to buy online. That was the wake-up call.”
Diving Into The Deep Water of Selling Online
Despite the challenges of delving into online retail, Riggs is optimistic about the future. “It’s been two years of trial and error, but we hit a point now where we’ve got a really good team. We take pride in our industry knowledge and accessibility to our customers,” he noted.
18 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2
Understanding the intricacies of e-commerce was one of the most significant hurdles. “How do you understand Google or the search engines?”, Riggs mentioned, “How do you understand the advertising? There’s just a bunch of verbiage that being a pool person, you don’t immediately understand. And it’s like this Bigfoot thing. What is SEO? What are backlinks?”.
Access to so much consumer data provides the opportunity for optimizing content based on what consumers are really searching for. Leveraging this data, has been instrumental to growing their online platform. “There’s a lot of metrics that we look at now so that we can be relevant in search. I mean it’s Amazon, Walmart, you’re competing against those guys,” said Riggs.
E-Commerce By The Numbers
In 2023, U.S. e-commerce sales reached about $1.119 trillion, a 7.6% increase from 2022. This booming market presents a significant opportunity for pool stores to capture a larger share of the pie. Riggs and his team recognized this potential early on and made strategic investments to position PoolGoods.com favorably in this expanding landscape.
Getting more people onto the website required investment and strategic planning. “You have to pay to play. It’s more capital to open up a retail store but it’s the same principle with e-commerce. There’s nothing fair about it. You have to be relevant with SEO and get on those pages,” Riggs noted.
Differentiation Based on Service
“Where the bigger players miss the connection on service. What’s your why? It’s natural because we’re in the business,” explained Riggs, “If you’re buying shock because Amazon has a great ad and a great price on it, and you don’t know water chemistry, you’re going to have awful results. You might ruin your pump, you might ruin your liner or plaster. This is a different type of industry that the big box stores or the big e-commerce will never truly understand. We address it so naturally, so easily. It’s what we do every day. We’re physically doing the work.”
Competing in the online retail space, especially with thinner margins, requires a clear strategy. “We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. We’re just trying to be us— local, homegrown, family-owned. We know the vendors, the players, and we have thousands of customers who love us,” Riggs emphasized.
Leveling The Playing Field
For pool professionals looking to compete against big box online retailers, the lesson from PoolGoods.com is clear: leverage your expertise and commitment to service. Riggs concluded, “Service wins, especially when done at a high level. Our industry knowledge and our ability to connect with customers are what set us apart. We’re having fun doing it, and that’s the most important part.”

J&M POOLS
Success in the pool industry is a unique journey for each company, marked by a commitment to continuous improvement and strategic optimization. While the roadmaps may differ, one commonality among thriving pool companies is their dedication to fine-tuning their processes and promoting excellence within their teams. By focusing on recruiting top talent, leveraging education, and maintaining high standards, these companies achieve significant growth and customer satisfaction.
To gain insights into how optimization drives performance, we spoke with Jacob Durand, cofounder of J&M Pools in Senoia, GA. Ranked #12 on the 2023 PSN Top 50 list, J&M Pools is renowned for its luxury pool and outdoor living projects, consistently earning awards for design and craftsmanship.
The firm Jacob started with his brother Mike, was initially focused on cleaning and maintenance. The brothers however soon recognized the need to put together a robust team that could support future growth. By hiring skilled professionals, they could focus on brand building and marketing to attract more customers.
“What we did is we hired and tried to find the best talent in our area at the time. We ended up recruiting our first technician and then it wasn’t too long before we recruited a maintenance manager too. Then it was the same deal with new pool construction. It was a only matter of time before we got sick of saying no to the phone calls and hired a construction manager to expand that business. All that growth came from necessity,” said Durand.
The transition from a maintenancefocused firm to a builder of
award-winning pools brought its own challenges. However, Jacob emphasized that these obstacles were opportunities for learning and growth.
“I would say the challenges never stop. Sometimes with the higherend projects, you would love for everything to just be faster,” said Durand.
“The problem with anything higherend is speed is not necessarily of utmost importance, or at least it shouldn’t be. It should be the quality and the craftsmanship. We’ve been heavily involved with WaterShape and Genesis education, but always making sure that if we were going to do something, we were going to do it right. Not because we thought it was right, but because we knew it was right, because we were educated on the topic through the best in the industry,” he explained.

For high-end projects, managing client expectations is crucial. Consequently, Durand said their organization focuses on educating clients about the importance of quality over speed.
“A big challenge is really fine-tuning and explaining to the client saying hey, if you want something to this level, just don’t expect it to be fast. But when we’re done, you’re going to be glad we didn’t do it so quickly because you’re going to love it for many years to come,” Durand noted.
One of the greatest lessons Durand found out about the pool sales process came with understanding the importance of showcasing their work through high-quality video and photography.
“We do so many fun projects. Whenever we have that client that really trusts us and we can incorporate fire elements, the furniture, the masonry, pebble interiors, landscaping, the outdoor lighting, the surround sound, when you get that full ambiance, there’s just no photo equal to the task. We win a lot of awards off of great photography. Jimi Smith is one
of our photographers,” Durand shared. “He is the premier pool photography guy. But you could take a thousand photos of this pool. You could video this pool. Nothing even comes close to going out there and experiencing it. Because when you’re in sensory overload and everything is creating a positive vibe with each other, there’s no image or video that comes close,” confided Durand.
Optimizing around new channels for financing has also been a cornerstone for J&M’s success, enabling them to undertake larger projects. Something Jacob noted has been critical in the face of changing economic conditions.
“Financing is huge for us for a number of reasons. Not everybody is going to have anywhere from $80,000 to $250,000 just freely disposable to spend on a swimming pool. What they need to do is they want to break that up into a monthly payment. We’ve had an awesome partner in Viking Capital. Even if they’re not financing the entire pool project, they can come in and serve as a reflection of us with the same quality for that client to help them through that financing
side, which allows us to have much larger projects than we would have,” explained Durand. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted many industries, and the pool construction sector was no exception. As people sought ways to enhance their homes and outdoor living spaces, demand for pool services skyrocketed. This surge in demand attracted numerous new players to the market, leading to an oversaturation of pool builders, cleaners, and technicians.
“You had a lot of pool builders come into the market after 2021. In a sense, the industry became oversaturated with pool builders, pool cleaners, as well as techs. People were really doing poor quality work,” said Durand.
Durand explained how the scenario, while challenging, also created an opportunity for J&M Pools. “We were able to come in during that slow down and trim a lot of fat from our company. Anyone who didn’t meet the standards that we expect out of the J&M brand, we let them go and then really strengthened the core,” said Durand.

A Massive $14M Pool Project at ST. REGIS IN LONGBOAT KEY
BY MARIANNE TRUSTY | PHOTOS: ST. REGIS | RAY CORRAL (MOSAICIST, INC.)
The pristine sands of Longboat Key are about to get even more luxurious. Joining the ranks of St. Regis resorts in Bali, Maldives, and Bora Bora, the St. Regis Longboat Key Residences & Resort is gearing up for a grand opening in late summer. But this isn’t just any new resort; it’s a behemoth. Designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA), the 18-acre property is the island’s largest project in over 50 years, and it boasts a centerpiece unlike any other: a massive $14 million pool complex.
St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, an esteemed luxury hospitality brand, can trace its origins back to the early 20th century with the vision of John Jacob Astor IV, a prominent figure of New
York’s Gilded Age. Astor opened the first St. Regis Hotel in 1904 on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Today, the chain has properties all over the globe and the brand name is synonymous with opulence and sophistication.
The Longboat Key property is the latest jewel in the crown for St. Regis, featuring a complete redevelopment of the former Colony Beach & Tennis Resort. Gone are the days of old; in its place will rise a 166-room luxury resort complete with every conceivable amenity. In addition, 69 ultra-luxury condos ranging from one to four bedrooms, with prices starting at a cool $2 million (and a staggering $20 million for a top-tier four-bedroom suite). With a construction cost north of $800 million, the developers are
sparing no expense to construct a world-class residence and resort at St. Regis, but the true showstopper lies outdoors.
A Unique Experience Like Nothing Before
Imagine multiple luxury pools connected to a beach-entry saltwater lagoon teeming with tropical fish and other marine life. This isn’t just a fantasy – it’s the reality being meticulously crafted at The St. Regis. The 350,000-gallon lagoon utilizing about 110,000 pounds of salt, will serve as a wildlife reserve, housing stingrays, Galapagos turtles, and over 2,800 local reef fish. The educational experience for guests goes beyond simple observation; visitors will have the opportunity to snorkel amidst the vibrant marine life.
24 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2
Pool Magazine first became aware of the project when we spoke with Vito Mariano, President of Basecrete Technologies, earlier this year at the Everything Under the Sun Expo, in Orlando, FL. Mariano let us know that his firm is playing a key role as consultant in the project. His company’s Basecrete product is being used not only to waterproof the colossal pool complex but also to create stunningly realistic coral and stone features throughout. “It’s unbelievable,” Mariano says. “Rockstar Pools is the company building this massive pool with beach walkin entry on both the east and west sides. A lazy river winds its way around the entire complex, connecting to four or five other large-sized pools.”
But the centerpiece is truly awe-inspiring. “In the middle of this half-acre pool,” Mariano continues, “they’re sculpting a whole lagoon using shotcrete on top of styrofoam and simulating it to look just like coral. They’re even incorporating special pigmenting into our Basecrete to create realistic coral colors.”
Pulling out all the stops to create a one-of-a-kind swim experience like no other, it’s clear that the developers are committed to bringing in the best of the best for each aspect of construction. Mariano certainly isn’t the only ringer they’ve brought in as a consultant, far from it.
World-class mosaic artisan Ray Corral also finds himself deeply involved in numerous aspects
of the project. Developer Chuck Whithall, the founder, CEO, and President of Unicorp National Developments, collaborated with Corral to conceive multiple mosaic murals at St. Regis Longboat Key.
The murals Corral’s firm Mosaicist, Inc. are creating are meant to embody the oceanic beauty of Florida’s west coast. Partnering with Italian-based Litokol, a global leader in setting material and construction products, the project sets new standards in outdoor and underwater mosaic applications. This artistic endeavor not only highlights the resort’s commitment to luxury but also positions it as a unique attraction in the region.
A meticulous design selection process led to the final concept being chosen among 15 proposed designs and over 30 mock-ups. The developer envisioned elements inspired by a Florida west coast oceanic theme with turquoise and blue hues.
A floral motif, drawing inspiration from the majestic Jacaranda Tree at the entry roundabout, adds a distinctive flair, with pink and purple flowers serving as both decorative components and a visual break in the oceanthemed composition front waterfall feature. To promote design continuity, the motif extends to the rooftop pool area, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic across the property.
While the project is still under construction, it’s clear that the attention to detail on this project is nothing short of remarkable; even the bottom of the lagoon is being outfitted with four inches of sand to provide a natural habitat for the stingrays.
The finished product promises to be a luxurious oasis unlike any other in the region. Construction looks near completion and developers hope that guests will soon find themselves swimming alongside a bevy of diverse marine life in a meticulously crafted coral paradise by the end of the summer.

Expansive Elegance: Large-Format Pool Tile
The implementation of large format tiles greatly reduces the amount of visual grout lines, creating the illusion of additional space, a more refined look and high-end aesthetic. Moreover, the fewer grout lines, the fewer areas for dirt and grime to collect, making cleaning and maintaining your pool a breeze.
Black Pool Tile Returns to the Spotlight
Bold, modern, and timeless, black pool tile has made a triumphant return in 2024. Diverging from the conventional lighter hues commonly found in pools, black tiles introduce depth and contrast to your pools surroundings, adding a touch of modern sophistication.
The Tried-and-True Appeal of Subway Tile
Subway pool tile continues to hold its own as a premier trend in pool design. It’s a cherished tile for its enduring elegance and adaptable, classic style. Crafted from glass or porcelain, subway tiles present a clean and sophisticated aesthetic that blends into various pool styles. Available in just about any color imaginable, this popular tile adds
a touch of subtle visual interest through its sharp, angular lines.
Renowned for their smooth surfaces, they resist water, fading, and staining, ensuring long-lasting durability. This inherent resilience translates into easy maintenance, offering homeowners more time to relax and enjoy their pool and less time on upkeep.
Traditional Style with a Modern Twist: Patterned Pool Tile
Made popular through traditional, Mediterranean styles, patterned pool tile has made the list in 2024 with a new, modern twist. Manufacturers like Aquatica and MSI have breathed new life into the classic patterned porcelain tile with new, fresh colors and modern geometric designs.
Sophisticated Simplicity: Neutral Color Pool Tiles
Neutral pool tiles are rapidly gaining popularity in 2024. Pool owners are captivated by the airy, rejuvenating ambiance that lighter colors create. Whether it’s the gentle tones of a soft pastel, the warmth of creamy neutrals, or the understated elegance of the various shades of white, light-colored pool tiles have emerged as symbols of
contemporary style.
In fact, white pool tile acts as the perfect blank canvas to create the highly-sought-after aqua-colored water found in luxury resorts around the world. Mimicking the allure of the stunning Caribbean Sea, white tiles reflect a combination of sunlight and the clarity of the blue sky, resulting in blue waters that entice the senses and will keep you and your guests outside all year long!
Swim in Luxury: 24K Gold Tile
Gold pool tiles epitomize luxury and opulence, elevating pools and spas to a new level of extravagance. Each tile undergoes meticulous crafting, featuring genuine 24k gold leaf that creates a breathtaking shimmer that commands attention.
These pool tile trends for 2024 offer diverse options to elevate any pool into a stunning retreat. Water Safety Goes Beyond
THE SWIMMING POOL
In every facet of life, learning keeps your skills sharp, and this is particularly essential for aquatics. Whether you’re a service professional or pool owner, learning to safely enjoy water should be a top priority to mitigate risks, prevent accidents and create a secure environment for enjoyable aquatic experiences.
“At Pentair Pool, we help people safely and sustainably enjoy water. And safety is more than a priority — it’s at the core of our values and the foundation for how we conduct business,” said Greg Claffey, group president for Pentair Pool.
Whether you have an aboveground pool or an inground pool, safety should always be a top priority, especially when children are involved. In fact, fatal drowning is the leading cause of death for children under five, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
As a pool owner, supervision is the number one thing to save kids from drowning.
From repairing broken tiles to keeping your pool equipment in tip-top shape, your attentiveness now could prevent a sunny day emergency. In addition to creating a safer swim environment, leaning on a pool servicer can help you keep your pool in safe operating condition.
“Paying attention to safety is an important part of doing business and gaining people’s confidence,” said Kenneth Gregory, Safety and Compliance Manager at Pentair Pool. “If pool professionals see an issue in the backyard, it is their responsibility to flag those issues to the homeowner and correct them as soon as possible.”
Swim safety doesn’t start when you walk up to the pool. Pool fences, gate alarms, drain covers,

cameras and water rescue equipment are just some of the essentials for a safe home pool environment.
“There are a myriad of things to pay attention to when owning and installing a pool,” said Eva Marcial, Director of Customer Experience at Pentair Pool. “Simple steps such as making sure the gate latch is working properly to ensure the continued security of your pool area to understanding the basic maintenance of a pool are all equally important when it comes to safety.”
Innovative products that promote pool safety, such as Pentair’s NSF-certified BioShield® UV System, which reduces harmful chloramines, assist in making pools safer and more enjoyable for swimmers. The BioShield UV System reduces chloramines by up to 25%, which can help reduce itchy eyes and skin irritation.”
32 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2
“Pentair’s BioShield UV Pro System water conditioning device is the very first to receive an NSF 50 approval to help reduce chloramines in swimming pools, which reduces chemical odors that can cause itchy skin and burning red eyes,” said Gregory.
Ensure Proper Maintenance
Getting to know the equipment at your pool and the do’s and don’ts of maintenance can also be valuable knowledge to keep in your toolkit. For example, understanding the safe and proper procedures for cleaning and maintaining your pool filters can help prevent safety hazards like trapped air. This is why pool owners should find a pool professional to handle this service. Trained experts know how to prevent this from happening, and they can answer any questions owners have about their pools, too.
Water chemistry is also a critical component of pool safety. To ensure the highest water quality, test pH and free chlorine levels daily, adding chemicals as needed. Proper chemical usage is important for maintaining a healthy pool. Be sure to follow the chemical manufacturer’s instructions closely regarding the proper dosage based on pool size.
When it comes to water clarity, pool owners should keep their filter, pump, lint trap and skimmer baskets clean and in proper working condition to help ensure their pool water stays sparkling clear.
“Clarity of water allows lifeguards to see swimmers and is a critical component of water safety,” said Marcial. “By following proper guidelines for handling, using and storing pool chemicals, you can help prevent accidents and assist in the maintenance of pool equipment.”
Qualified pool professionals can help keep your equipment in readyto-use condition and check to make sure your pool complies with safety standards.
Teaching Water Safety
Pentair Pool provides educational materials thatdelve into crucial safety measures for both residential and commercial pool owners and professionals to ensure the well-being of users and to adhere to proper safety regulations. These resources offer key considerations such as proper fencing and gating, regular maintenance routines, service training and compliance with safety
standards. By implementing these tips, pool owners and professionals can make water safety a priority beyond the swimming pool.
“Pentair Pool offers training on all its products for proper installation and maintenance,” said Gregory. “We conduct safety training for not only pool professionals but building and code officials as well on compliance with safety codes and standards. For this reason, Pentair is recognized as the industry leader for water safety.”
You can’t put a price on preparedness, so take the time to become First Aid/CPR certified. It doesn’t take a lot of time and the benefits are immeasurable. The Red Cross also offers classes, so don’t hesitate to find one near you. In addition to being certified in First Aid and CPR, you should have a pool safety plan, a phone nearby with emergency numbers and lifesaving equipment (like a hook or flotation device).

A Luxurious & Natural Aesthetic WITH CORAL STONE
BY JOE TRUSTY | PHOTO CREDITS: CORAL STONE USA
When it comes to crafting the perfect outdoor oasis, consumers are increasingly seeking a blend of luxury and natural aesthetics for their pool decks. The desire for a space that exudes elegance while remaining functional has led many to explore innovative materials, and one standout choice is coral stone. Renowned for its exquisite beauty and practical advantages, coral stone is gaining popularity among homeowners and pool builders alike.the architectural tapestry of the resort.
We all know that revamping your outdoor living space is a savvy investment that can significantly elevate your property’s value. But with such a substantial undertaking, meticulous material selection is paramount. Homeowners and builders are looking for options that not only exude aesthetic appeal but also promise functionality, longevity, and hassle-free maintenance.
Coral stone, also known as coralina fossil stone or keystone, is typically sourced from quarries in the
Caribbean. The natural stone is a popular choice throughout the sun belt states, but is particularly popular in larger pool markets such as Arizona, California, Florida, and Texas. There are a few distinct reasons why this natural stone is emerging as a transformative material in the realm of pool and outdoor living projects. Here’s how:
1. Durability and Resilience -Withstands extreme temperatures, UV exposure, moisture, chemicals.
2. Low Maintenance - With periodic cleaning and sealing, it retains its pristine appearance for years.
3. Cool To The Touch - Exceptionally comfortable for barefoot lounging around the pool area.
4. Safety & Non-Slip Surface - Textured surface of the product provides excellent traction, even when wet, reducing the risk of slips and falls.
5. Versatility - Can be customized to suit a variety of design preferences, from rustic to contemporary.
34 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2
Why Coral Stone Is a Favorite With Pool Builders
Shasta Pools, a leading pool builder in Arizona, attests that coral stone is incredibly popular in regions where consumers are looking for materials with low heat retention: “One reason why this type of stone is used in many Arizona pool decking designs is because it absorbs a minimum amount of heat and is incredibly easy to maintain.”
American Pools of Orlando, FL recommends coral stone and praises the material for its incredible durability. “It’s a remarkably tough stone, and is able to withstand severe weather, pool chemicals, and even running kids.”
“You can find plenty of materials that are being used for pool decks. However, in terms of price, coral stone is very competitive in the market, and it’s become a preferred option for consumers for two primary reasons: low heat retention and it has a non-slip surface even when it’s wet. A lot of our clients want the product
for that particular reason,” said Jorge Larrauri of Coral Stone USA, a leading provider of high-quality coral stone products.
When considering materials for high-traffic areas such as the pool decks found in today’s popular hotels and resorts, coral stone has become a go-to product, according to Larrauri.
“When you’re dealing with high traffic, you want to make sure that your guests can walk safely, comfortably, and can move around without having to continuously look down at the ground and make sure they’re not stepping on a wet spot that’s going to cause them to slip or injure themselves,” said Larrauri. Consequently, coral stone’s non-slip surface provides better traction that can withstand high foot traffic year after year.
Achieving a Unique Look
Aside from the practical and functional aspects, the natural beauty of coral stone is one of the
paramount reasons the material remains popular with homeowners and builders alike. Its intricate patterns, soft hues, and unique textures impart a sense of elegance and refinement to any outdoor setting.
When it comes to colors, the spectrum typically ranges from various shades of beige and tan to peach and coral hues. Whether used for pool coping, decking, or accent features, the stone adds a touch of timeless charm that enhances the visual allure of the entire space.
“Our most popular product would have to be our flagship ‘Select White’,” said Larrauri, “It’s more of a modern application. The product is very sleek-looking and trending more towards a high contrast if you’re going for a high-end luxury look. It really depends on what you’re going for as well with the design. Certain sizes and details in the stone can affect the whole look and ambiance of the backyard.” Read the entire article.

Making Waves in the Pool Industry MOREHEAD POOLS
Building pools that exude Southern charm and hospitality has made Morehead Pools one of the top pool builders in the nation.
BY JOE TRUSTY PHOTOS: JIMI SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY
When thinking of where the leading pool builders hail from, places like California, Florida, Texas, and Arizona naturally come to mind. Yet, nestled in the quiet city of Shreveport, Louisiana, Morehead Pools is defying expectations and making significant waves in the pool industry.
Under the leadership of Michael Moore, President & CEO, this third-generation company is racking up award after award and establishing itself as a leader in luxury pool construction. Their commitment to excellence and unique approach has helped set them apart, and their story is one of tradition, innovation, and community.
Morehead Pools traces its roots back to the 1960s, a time when the pool industry was just beginning to flourish. Michael Moore shared the company’s rich history:
“I’m a third-generation pool builder. In 1975, my grandmother began running this operation and actually purchased the company (from the previous owner). We can’t verify this, but I think she was one of, if not the first woman pool business owner.” This pioneering spirit has clearly been a cornerstone of Morehead Pools from the beginning.
38 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2
For over 60 years Morehead Pools has quietly but steadily become a market leader in Louisiana.
POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2 39
Michael’s grandfather left his role at the power company to join the pool business. “My grandfather quit his job as a pole climber, came over and got on the end of a gunite hose,” Moore reminisced. The family’s hands-on approach and dedication to their craft have been integral to their success.
By the late 1990s, Michael’s father had taken over, continuing the family tradition. “Back then I was Vice President of Sales and did a lot of design work after I graduated college in 2003. My father passed away suddenly in 2015, which kind of escalated our succession plan,” Michael explained. Since then, he’s led the company with the same passion and commitment instilled by his predecessors.
In a market dominated by high-
volume builders, Morehead Pools stands out with its focus on quality and custom design. “You know, we’re not boutique, but we’re certainly not volume. We build about 55 plus pools a year, about a pool a week or so. We cater a little more to the high end,” said Moore. This approach has allowed Morehead Pools to create luxurious backyard environments that exceed client expectations.
Their philosophy and strategy have earned them a prestigious reputation. Morehead Pools first cracked the top 50 pool builders list in 2011 and, more recently, was named one of the top ten pool builders in the nation by PSN in 2023. “That’s no small feat for a pool firm located in Shreveport, Louisiana,” acknowledged Michael.
The company’s success can be attributed to its foundational principles and core values. “I give the credit to my grandparents and my father with just the work ethic that they instilled,” Michael stated. This strong foundation, combined with a focus on excellence in multiple areas including design, quality of construction, and the customer experience, has propelled Morehead Pools as a leader in the industry.
While Shreveport may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of leading pool markets, Morehead Pools has certainly made a significant impact. A diverse community with a robust economic base that includes medical, legal, and oil and gas industries, Shreveport certainly has its fair share of high-end homes.

The culture of outdoor recreation and southern hospitality is alive and well in Shreveport. Homeowners there value not just the pool but the entire outdoor living space. “Having it completely finished is always the number one topic with homeowners these days,” said Moore. Over the past decade, the focus has shifted from just building pools to creating comprehensive outdoor environments. “It’s happened since the emergence of outdoor kitchens, which morphed into outdoor living, where the pool really became complementary to those spaces,” Michael explained.
This holistic approach to design has been a game-changer for Morehead Pools. Clients now seek complete master plans for their backyards, incorporating pools, patios, kitchens, and living spaces all at once. This trend reflects a broader shift in the industry towards creating versatile, multi-functional outdoor areas.
One of the standout projects that exemplify Morehead Pools’ expertise
is the Gould residence. This project was showcased in a Master Pools Guild presentation and has garnered significant attention. “The Goulds were empty nesters building a 6,000 to 7000 square foot house. They wanted a backyard that could accommodate their family and their love for hosting,” Michael recalled.
The design process involved extensive collaboration to ensure that every aspect of the backyard met the clients’ needs. “They had two children, four grandchildren, and loved hosting events. We needed about a 1,200 square foot pool and plenty of space for entertaining,” Moore explained. The result was a meticulously planned space that catered to both intimate family moments and large gatherings.
The materials and features used in the Gould project were carefully selected to create a cohesive and visually stunning environment. “We harvested all the paving from Luder, Texas, and used Austin limestone to complement the house,” Michael noted. The pool itself featured high-end finishes like
PebbleSheen interiors and automated systems for ease of use.
The Gould residence also included unique elements like fire and water bowls, adding a touch of flair to the space. “They wanted a little wow factor, so we incorporated features from our main equipment partner, Fluidra,” Moore said. The project took about two years from initial consultation to completion and was featured in the Parade of Homes, attracting over 2,000 visitors during a weekend showcase.
Michael Moore and the team at Morehead Pools are doing something uniquely special in their community. Their dedication to quality, innovation, and fellowship has earned them a reputation as one of the country’s leading pool builders. By focusing on comprehensive outdoor living spaces and continuing to redefine what backyards in the South are supposed to look like, Morehead Pools continues to set new standards in the industry

Hazardous Pool Designs CAN CAUSE FATALITIES
Designers and builders need to be intimately familiar with the building codes as they relate to swimming pool construction. This is particularly true when creating concepts that could be potentially hazardous pool designs.
Most state building and residential codes have adopted the ISPSC as “the code” for swimming pools for good reason.
Following ISPSC Can Help Prevent Hazardous Pool Designs
The ISPSC is broken down into sections. One that applies to all pools (Section 3), another to in-ground residential pools, another to commercial pools, etc. Since the introduction of the 2012 ISPSC, Section 323.3 has prohibited any obstruction that
can cause entrapment or injury. It goes on to provide a few examples (not inclusive of all possible hazards) such as: wedge or pinch type openings and non-giving cantilevered protrusions.
What qualifies as a wedge or pinch type opening? Any gap where a bather may become wedged or pinched. These hazards are compounded when they are underwater, where they may trap a swimmer and result in a drowning.
These openings may be from cantilevered steps, boulders, even a stainless steel ladder that hangs into a pool. To say it won’t happen, unfortunately, is wishful thinking. Swimmers have actually drowned by becoming caught between an SS pool ladder and the wall.
What is an example non-giving cantilevered protrusion? Think

of a stone or concrete table on a concrete pedestal, surrounded by benches.
A swimmer under the table, could easily panic and become trapped between the tabletop and bench. An underwater tunnel or rock work that hangs significantly over the water are other examples.
These details may seem cool in concept, they pose real and significant hazards to inexperienced swimmers who easily panic when they choke on water, run out of air, or resurface directly under an obstruction.
While state or local jurisdictions are only allowed to make the codes more stringent, they are not allowed to waive a code or standard that specifically prohibits a hazardous condition.

Why Follow ISPSC Guidelines?
The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) is considered the gold standard in the pool industry due to its comprehensive, detailed, and safetyoriented approach to pool and spa construction and maintenance.
When embarking on a pool project, it is crucial to consider the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) standards not only during the construction phase but also from the very beginning of the design process. Failing to do so can have serious consequences for the builder, the homeowner, and swimmers safety.
Why integrating ISPSC standards at the design stage is essential:
1. Ensuring Feasibility and Safety: Integrating ISPSC standards early ensures that design concepts are both feasible and safe, preventing the creation of unsafe or impractical features.
2. Streamlining the Approval Process: Adhering to ISPSC guidelines from the start simplifies regulatory approvals, reducing the need for revisions and accelerating project timelines.
3. Avoiding Costly Revisions: Early compliance with ISPSC standards prevents expensive and complex modifications during or after construction, ensuring a smooth and cost-efficient project.
4. Functionality and User Experience: Designing with ISPSC standards ensures optimal water quality, efficient maintenance, and accessibility, leading to a better and more inclusive swimming experience.
5. Future-Proofing the Design: Compliance with ISPSC standards helps future-proof the design, ensuring it remains relevant and safe as regulations evolve.
The ISPSC is developed by the International Code Council (ICC), a renowned authority in building safety and fire prevention. The code encompasses all aspects of pool and spa construction, including design, installation, operation, and maintenance. Its guidelines are meticulously crafted to address potential hazards, ensuring that pools and spas are safe for use.
A Uniform Set of Standards
The ISPSC provides a unified set of standards that can be applied nationwide and internationally. This uniformity is especially important for pool builders, designers, and inspectors, as it ensures that safety and quality are consistently maintained across different regions.
Consistency helps to eliminate confusion and discrepancies that can arise from varying
local codes, making the ISPSC a reliable and predictable framework for the industry. The ISPSC covers a wide range of pool and spa types, including residential and public pools, spas, hot tubs, and aquatic recreation facilities. This broad scope ensures that the code addresses the unique safety and operational requirements of different types of installations.
Whether dealing with a small backyard pool or a large public aquatic center, the ISPSC provides applicable guidelines to ensure safety and compliance while preventing potentially hazardous pool designs.

Crash Test Dummies Used to Study
DIVING
INJURIES
Diving is a remarkable feat observed not only in humans but also across the animal kingdom. Yet, beneath the thrill lies a potential danger—diving from significant heights can lead to severe injuries.
One groundbreaking study using crash test dummies delves into the parallels between the diving mechanics of different species, shedding light on the forces that shape our understanding of diving safety.
Engineers Study The Physics of Diving
Today, engineers are examining the physics of diving, not with living bodies, but with specialized dummies equipped with sensors. These mannequins, akin to the
crash-test dummies used in automotive safety testing, provide invaluable insights into the impact of diving on the human body without subjecting anyone to harm.
Published in the journal Science Advances, the findings of these engineers shed light on just how our bodies react when subjected to the forces of a dive. “Humans are not designed to dive into water,” explained Sunghwan Jung, a biological engineer at Cornell University leading the research.
Their exploration began by studying how various animals navigate water, from the gannet’s streamlined plunge to the porpoise’s sleek dive. Unlike humans, these creatures have evolved to thrive in aquatic environments, making their

movements in water far more natural and efficient.
To mimic these natural forms, the engineers crafted mannequins in different poses, each representing a diving animal. By dropping these dummies into water equipped with sensors, they could measure the forces experienced during impact and analyze how different body shapes interacted with the water.
What they discovered was illuminating: the shape of the body significantly influenced the force experienced upon impact. Rounded shapes, akin to a human head-first dive, endured more severe jolts compared to pointier shapes, reminiscent of a bird’s beak or a porpoise’s streamlined form.

Studies From The Point of Impact
According to research findings, diving from heights presents different risks depending on the entry method and height:
1. Diving feet-first from approximately 50 feet may increase the risk of knee injury.
2. Diving hands-first from around 40 feet could subject you to enough force to potentially injure your collarbone.
3. Diving head-first from just 27 feet may pose a risk of spinal cord injuries.
Diving into shallow water appears to pose the most significant risks, including spinal cord injuries. While these injuries aren’t common, they can result in devastating consequences. Research from 2013 revealed that falls and vehicle crashes are the primary causes of spinal cord injuries, with diving contributing to roughly 5 percent of cases
While such injuries may not be common, the research underscores the importance of heeding safety precautions, especially regarding diving into shallow water. By understanding the mechanics of diving better, engineers hope to inform safety guidelines and ultimately reduce the risk of injury for recreational divers. The implications of this research extend beyond safety warnings. Inspired by nature’s designs, engineers aim to develop projectiles capable of navigating deep waters more efficiently.

Why Do We Need to Keep ACCURATE POOL CHEMICAL LOGS
BY SCOTT TRAFTON
The penalties for improper commercial swimming pool or spa management can be severe. Today, we’ll discuss the potential implications for pool service professionals and the businesses that manage or own a commercial swimming pool or spa that is not compliant with keeping and maintaining proper chemical logs.
Why Do We Need Swimming Pool Chemical Logs?
First, it’s the law in most places. The Department of Health in most states now requires someone on your team to become a certified pool operator (CPO) and test and log the water chemical levels at least once daily. Anyone can do a water chemical test; however, in most cases, a CPO is required to add the chemicals. Depending on your state or county, you may be required to test the water
chemicals hourly, so check your local regulations. Not testing the water can result in fines or shutting your pool/spa down
Think of your pool chemical logs as a critical insurance policy. If someone gets sick while staying at your facility or comes down with a rash and claims it was due to the pool or spa, your logs are your only proof of proper maintenance.
There is no other way to look back and see the chemical levels on a given day. This alone is why you want your team to keep accurate logs. The amount of time a business needs to keep its pool logs varies. However, you want to keep them for liability reasons until your state’s statute of limitations expires.
It’s typically straightforward to tell that someone is forging a log book just by looking at it. Here are some
indicators that something is not right with your pool or spa testing regime:
1. The chemical logs are filled out for tomorrow, next week.
2. Logs are filled out on days your facility is closed or when staff are not working.
3. Chlorine readings are the same, test after test, day after day.
4. Multiple tests show the same Free Chlorine and Total Chlorine readings. Although free chlorine and total chlorine can be the same, typically, they are only the same after the pool is shocked.
If these readings are the same, the staff most likely isn’t testing both, costing your facility money in wasted chemicals and potentially affecting the health of your bathers.
52 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2
An accurate commercial-quality pool test kit rarely gives exact numbers, even if you test the same pool water twice. If it does, ensure it meets the Department of Health requirements and that the reagents are not expired. If in doubt, get a new test kit. As specifically required by state regulations, the NSF/ANSI Level 1 test kits are the most accurate and generally easiest to use.
A maintenance worker was arrested in South Carolina after falsifying the Department of Health-required pool chemical logs on a day he was not working. Unfortunately for everyone, that day, a 3-year-old received severe pool chemical burns from the chlorine in the pool. When the Department of Health was called and tested the pool chemicals, they found chlorine levels greatly exceeding what is allowed in the state.
The Myrtle Beach Hotel paid a heavy price for forging their pool chemical
logs in 2020. This settlement, in 2024, just enforces the point that all pools and spas should have their water chemicals tested before they are opened to the public. As with anything mechanical, things can go wrong quickly and when chemicals are involved it can get out of control fast.
Whether you manage an apartment, hotel, campground, or golf club, the swimming pool and spa are likely your most significant liability. Unfortunately, pools and spas are often overlooked and take a back seat to other maintenance tasks viewable to guests. While those things are essential, a squeaky door probably can’t cause bodily harm to several guests and potentially close your business. Pool chemical burns, legionella, cryptosporidium (crypto), and rashes are just some issues guests can encounter in pools and spas that are not adequately maintained. As mentioned before, most states require a person to
Discover quality pool & spa products shipped
manually test the pool chemical levels at least once a day or more depending on usage.
Ensure your team is testing the water chemicals before opening the gate to the public. Don’t open the pool or spa if the free chlorine levels are below 1.0ppm for pools (2.0ppm with stabilizer) or below 3.0ppm for spas, if the chemicals haven’t been tested that day, or on weekends without maintenance testing. In most cases, your team can easily correct the low chlorine levels by adding the correct dosage and testing again in 30 minutes. Once the chlorine has reached your state health department minimums the pool/spa can be opened unless there are other safety issues. Stay safe, and I’ll see you poolside.

Liquid Chlorine Still Remains a Top Choice FOR DISINFECTING POOL WATER
BY TERRY ARKO
One of the most popularly chosen forms for sanitizing pool water is liquid chlorine. It is widely used in swimming pools both commercial and residential. Technically speaking liquid chlorine is a chlorinating compound made of these three ingredients, liquid chlorine, water, and sodium hydroxide. The correct term is liquid sodium hypochlorite. It is more correctly referred to as liquid bleach. The popularity of liquid sodium hypochlorite is primarily due to its availability, cost, and efficacy. Also, sodium hypochlorite will not contribute to an increase in calcium or cyanuric acid. It remains one of the purest and simplest formulas for the disinfection of
bacteria and the prevention and removal of algae in swimming pools.
Early uses of sodium hypochlorite included: Disinfection of medical facilities and hospitals, preventing the spread of disease from corpses, slaughterhouses, and food production. In the early 1900’s liquid sodium hypochlorite was used to disinfect drinking water. The use of chlorine disinfection at water treatment plants was highly effective in exponentially reducing fatalities from waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever.
Since liquid sodium hypochlorite was effective in the disinfection of drinking water, it was only natural
that it would make its way to swimming pools. Liquid sodium hypochlorite is preferred at public pools because it is safer to store then either chlorine gas, tri-chlor or calcium hypochlorite. As backyard residential pools began to gain popularity in the 1950’s and 60’s liquid sodium hypochlorite played a key role in disinfection and water clarity. Before chlorine tablets, feeders and floaters began to make their way into pools there was a simple routine. Sanitize with liquid sodium hypochlorite and manage pH with muriatic acid.
While liquid sodium hypochlorite was a popular choice for backyard pools there was a problem. Sodium hypochlorite is un-stabilized.
54 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 2
This means that the summer sunlight destroys the free chlorine within a few hours. Since this problem began to be recognized the practice of adding extra amounts of liquid sodium hypochlorite in the late afternoon or evening was incorporated. In 1956 Monsanto began to produce and distribute cyanuric acid (CYA).
At levels of 30 ppm CYA helps free chlorine residuals last up to eight times longer. There is an incredible benefit from adding CYA to the pool water. In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s solid tablets of stabilized chlorine known as isocyanurates made their way into residential swimming pools.
The selling point was convenience for the owner. The tablets could be added to an inline feeder, or a floating container known as a floater. The advantage was that the stabilizer to protect free chlorine from the destruction of sunlight was built right into the tablet. Voilà, instant convenience for the modern pool owner. As this system of treating backyard pools grew in popularity liquid sodium hypochlorite was pushed out as the main source of pool sanitization. Liquid sodium hypochlorite became more of a back- up or shock to TriChlor tablets in pools.
While the two-in one convenience of Tri-Chlor tabs grew there was something happening beneath the surface that pool pros soon noticed. Early on there was a perception that higher levels of CYA could lock up the effectiveness of the chlorine. This was known as “chlorine lock” and whether it is mythical or factual it was the source of many a bar room brawl. From academia to the field tech the debate over CYA has been a mainstay in the swimming pool industry for over 30 years. One
thing that is certain to most pool service techs is that pools on TriChlor tabs with increasing amounts of CYA can be a struggle to maintain. There is more of a challenge to keep free available chlorine levels good, and many pools develop algae toward the end of the season. Users of tri-chlor tabs have become aware of some side effects that lead to complications in water treatment. One crucial factor is understanding the amount of CYA being released from the continual use of Tri-Chlor tablets. Most of an 8 oz. Tri-Chlor tablet consist of CYA.
Over 54% of one tablet by weight is CYA with the other 46% being chlorine. At one time the concept of more is better ruled. Now the latest information shows too much CYA leads to the increased need to drain and dilute. Not a popular choice during a drought or water restrictions. One point that has become noticeably clear lately is that using Tri-Chlor tabs has made maintenance of pool water more complicated.
Other points regarding this are the fact that Tri-chlor tabs are very acidic which leads to more soda ash to balance pool water. Also, CYA interferes with the total alkalinity reading if the levels are higher than 60 ppm. Meaning that total alkalinity readings can be falsely measuring too high. This leads to more complications and adjustments. Now there is emerging research from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that shows it takes a lot more chlorine and contact time to inactivate bacteria.
Further research shows there must be a proper ratio between the ppm of free chlorine and CYA present in the pool to effectively kill bacteria and prevent algae. Current theories suggest using a ratio of 7.5% ppm
of free chlorine times the CYA ppm level. For example, if CYA level is 60 ppm it would take 4.5 ppm of residual chlorine to kill bacteria and prevent algae growth. 60 x 7.5%=4.5 ppm. The CDC and Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) suggest a CYA to chlorine ratio of 20:1 in order to effectively inactivate bacteria. That means at 20 ppm CYA there must be 1 ppm of FC in order to effectively inactivate bacteria such as E. coli or Giardia. While the debate continues it is clear to see that the perceived convenience of Tri-Chlor tablets leads to a lot of complications and additional work for service pros.
Despite all the information, questions and confusion regarding CYA and the use of Tri-Clor in swimming pools, there is still a dependable, safe, and simple way to get chlorine sanitizer. Liquid sodium hypochlorite has been proven through the history of pools to be one of the most cost effective, easy, and safest ways to disinfect pool water.
Benefits of Liquid Sodium Hypochlorite
1. Affordable.
2. Easy to use.
3. Safe for storage as it is nonflammable and non-combustible.
4. Creates an instant measurable residual of free chlorine.
5. Does NOT contain calcium or cyanuric acid.
6. Beneficial as a back up to chlorine generator systems.
7. Ideal for use with secondary sanitizing systems like ozone, UV and AOP.

homeowners allow him and his friends to skate in the emptied pool afterward.
Alba’s van is a mobile workshop, equipped with all the tools needed for pool maintenance alongside a crucial addition: a skateboard. For decades, Alba has been at the forefront of pool skating culture, embodying the spirit of exploration and ingenuity that defines the sport. “The ultimate goal is to skate the pool,” Alba explained to the Wall Street Journal, reflecting on his lifelong passion for finding and riding the perfect transition.
Skating Pools Goes Way Back
The concept of skating empty pools harks back to the 1970s, an era when skateboarders repurposed backyard pools and urban terrain to emulate the sensation of surfing. Today, with skateparks aplenty,
some skaters still crave the raw, organic experience of navigating the curves and transitions of a pool’s concrete shell.
The allure of backyard pools is deeply primal for skateboarders. While city-sanctioned skate parks abound—with the Skatepark Project, a California-based nonprofit, estimating around 3,500 in the U.S. in 2019—to dedicated pool skaters, purpose-made bowls and ramps can feel repetitive and almost too simplistic, particularly when they’re inundated by scooterpushing tweens.
Skaters Willing To Clean Pools For Pool Time
Pitching their services to homeowners requires finesse and persuasion. Ozzie Ausband, another enthusiast of pool skating, utilizes satellite imagery and a personal

charm to win over clients. His pitch includes promises of regular maintenance, respectful usage, and a demonstration of his skating skills to reassure homeowners of his credibility.
For homeowners, the allure lies not just in the novelty of having skateboarders in their backyard but also in the practical benefits. Salba Pool Cleaning doesn’t just drain and skate; they also undertake yard maintenance tasks and repairs as needed. Ausband, explained that the homeowner is essentially getting a free service, so long as the crew at Salba Pool Cleaning can bring their boards and skate the pool when the job is done.
Getting a ‘Permission Pool’
Initially met with skepticism, their unconventional proposition has evolved into a successful endeavor over the decades. Their pitch now includes the signing of liability waivers to address homeowners’ concerns.
For many homeowners burdened with neglected pools, the proposition is a blessing. What was once an eyesore transforms into a hub of excitement. Alba and his crew recognize the untapped potential hidden beneath neglect. To them, the ideal pool isn’t just defined by its shape but also by the quality of its surface, particularly favoring pools constructed between 1950 and 1977.
However, the service isn’t without its challenges. Skating can leave its mark on pools, requiring repairs and repainting. Participating in a skate session at a “permission pool” often involves contributing to chores. Lance Mountain, a seasoned pro and a Nike skateboarding team member, endured hay fever while assisting with yard work to earn pool time. On one occasion, Mountain found himself pouring and shaping concrete with his fellow skaters to resurface a pool bottom. They labored until late into the night, illuminated solely by iPhone flashlights.
Yet, for many homeowners like Daniel Lizarde, the agreement was well worth it. After Salba Pool Cleaning finished their work, Lizarde’s pool was restored from a duck pond to its former glory. The homeowner was pleased he could see the bottom of his pool for the first time in ages.

Of Americans Surveyed Believe Clear Water Is Clean, Swim-Safe Water
According to Recent HARRIS / LESLIE’S POLL
Clear-looking pool water is mistakenly assumed to be safe for swimming, according to a recent survey conducted by The Harris Poll and commissioned by Leslie’s, the leading and most trusted consumer brand in the U.S. pool and spa care industry.
According to the poll, 71% of those surveyed believe that clear water is clean and safe for swimming. However, even clear water can contain contaminants that pose a danger to swimmers, and pool owners shouldn’t assume a pool is safe just because the water is clear.
The news arrives as Leslie’s launches its water safety education campaign for the 2024 swim season. Leslie’s is spreading awareness of the three primary tenets of pool safety: maintaining healthy and safe water, securing the pool area, and participating in swimming lessons and water
safety education.
“As we head into the 2024 swim season, our aim is to help educate pool owners on the tenets of pool safety. Among those tenets is maintaining healthy water, and we make it easy for pool owners to test and treat their water, creating a safe environment for all,” said Clay Spann, SVP of Merchandising at Leslie’s.
“We aren’t surprised by these survey results, as there are many misconceptions related to pool water chemistry,” Spann said. “The only way to really know if pool water is clean, healthy, and safe for swimming is to check if the water is properly balanced and sanitized. To be certain of this, owners must regularly test the pool water’s chemistry makeup and precisely measure 10 different components, including pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, metals, phosphates, sanitizer levels, and more.”

The Leslie’s/Harris Poll survey also revealed that 71% of Americans who are responsible for maintaining a pool say keeping water safe is complicated, a misperception Leslie’s aims to correct with its AccuBlue® and AccuBlue Home® testing and treatment solutions.
Leslie’s makes water testing simple with its industry-leading AccuBlue technology — the only pool and spa water test that covers all 10 water chemistry components. In just 60 seconds, this free, in-store water test delivers a hardcopy printout with a water quality score and step-by-step customized water treatment plan to help keep pool water balanced. Pool and spa owners have relied upon this professional-grade testing over the past six decades, with more than 50 million tests conducted by Leslie’s store teams.

75%
The same survey revealed that 81% of Americans who maintain their own pools wish there was a home technology solution for comprehensive 10-point pool water testing.
Last May, Leslie’s made water testing even easier and more convenient when the company launched its AccuBlue Home® membership program, which offers the same leading in-store testing technology, engineered into a compact at-home device. The AccuBlue Home testing device connects to the Leslie’s app to deliver a water quality score and customized water treatment plan to the user’s mobile phone or tablet.
Since its launch, AccuBlue Home has been embraced by pool owners, who value its convenience and accuracy. The membership program has earned a nearly five-star rating in member reviews with comments echoing exactly what it is designed to do: “takes all the guesswork out of testing your pool water” and “this little machine does everything the one in the store does.”
AccuBlue Home: How It Works
The technology is sophisticated, but the process is simple. Users simply insert a pool water sample into the water test disk and place it into the AccuBlue Home testing device. They then open Leslie’s app on their mobile device to start the test, and AccuBlue Home does the rest. Light wavelengths pass through the water sample to precisely measure the water’s chemistry makeup, and the app delivers the water test quality score and a step-by-step customized treatment plan in just 60 seconds. The app enables pool and spa owners to order home delivery of chemicals needed to execute the water treatment plan.
An AccuBlue Home membership costs $50 a month, which includes the home testing device for free, as well as $50 in Leslie’s credits each month for purchases online, in app, or in stores. AccuBlue Home members can use their monthly credit to purchase any products from Leslie’s, including sanitizers and balancing chemicals, as well as floats, games, and other accessories to make the most out of pool days.
Marianne Trusty, president of Pool Magazine, said, “We’ve long recognized the importance of comprehensive 10-point testing for healthy and safe water and to maintain the longevity of pool equipment. Leslie’s has always been a leader, and it’s remarkable that they have driven their in-store technology into such a sleek device and an easy-to-use approach for pool and hot tub water testing.”
The AccuBlue Home device, measuring just 4.5 inches wide by 3.5 inches tall, is small, stylish, and selfcontained, resembling a virtual assistant device — in this case, a virtual pool water assistant. It incorporates photometric testing technology with optical sensors, as well as a centrifuge, replaceable test disks, and more.
