New York’s Floating Pool Will FINALLY BECOME A REALITY

After approval of $16 million in funds for the project, + Pool will become a reality.

In the heart of New York City, a visionary project that has been nearly 14 years in the making is finally gaining momentum. + POOL, an openair pool designed to float on the East River, recently received a significant boost as Governor Kathy Hochul announced state and local funding for its realization. What began as a dream in June 2010 has navigated a complex journey of fundraising, testing, partnerships, and community advocacy to bring this innovative concept to the brink of reality.

Conceived by designers Dong

Ping-Wong, Oana Stenascu, Archie Lee Coates, and Jeffrey Franklin, + POOL emerged from a desire to transform part of the East River into a unique swimming pool experience. Shaped like a plus sign, the pool aimed to cater to various needs, including lap swimming, a kids’ pool, ‘hanging out,’ and water sports. The journey began with a Kickstarter campaign in June 2011, raising $250,000 within a week to design and test a primary filtration layer.

After a brief hiatus, + POOL resurfaced in October 2012 with a more ambitious fundraising goal

of $1 million. The project officially became a nonprofit organization, Friends of + POOL, in October 2014, with influential founding members like Joshua David and Marc Kushner. Over the years, the designers conducted feasibility studies, tested locations, and successfully filtered East River water through the Float Lab in June 2015.

The timeline is marked by partnerships, resolutions from community boards, and the green light announcement in May 2021, signaling a step closer to turning the vision into reality.

8 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1

The most recent milestone, Governor Kathy Hochul’s $16 million partnership commitment in January 2024, propels + POOL towards its anticipated opening date in 2025 on the Lower East Side.

The approved funding has breathed life into a visionary idea that was initially proposed over a decade ago, only to be dismissed by some as an urban fantasy. The concept involves a selffiltering swimming pool shaped like a plus sign, strategically positioned in the East River’s murky currents. Since its initial media attention, the project, known as +Pool, has faced sporadic progress hindered by regulatory barriers, but now, with the surge in summer heat drawing more New Yorkers to water recreation, Governor Hochul has pledged to expedite the long-stalled and much-debated innovative floating pool.

Governor Hochul announced plans for a “demonstration” version to be tested this summer, with a fully operational, swim-ready pool slated to open to the public by the summer of 2025. Alongside this commitment, Hochul proposed the construction of new swimming pools and the hiring of additional lifeguards across the state. She positioned this initiative as a public health investment, emphasizing its potential to enable more children to learn how to swim. Pending approval by state lawmakers, a $60 million grant program aims to construct 10 new pools in underserved communities, while an additional $30 million would fund pop-up pools during heatwaves.

The visionary project’s advocates have previously outlined plans for an Olympic-length pool anchored to the riverbed off Manhattan’s Lower East Side, featuring a distinctive filtration system capable of purifying 1 million gallons of water daily. Despite improvements in New York’s water quality, significant amounts of sewagecontaminated water still enter the rivers during heavy rainstorms.

It’s been a 14-year journey to garner enough support to turn New York’s floating pool concept into a fully funded reality.

Kara Meyer, managing director of +Pool and a proponent of the floating pool concept, expressed the belief that it would revolutionize the way New Yorkers engage with their waterways, harkening back to a bygone era when residents regularly bathed in the rivers to beat the heat.

However, amidst the celebration of progress, there are bittersweet sentiments expressed by original + POOL designer Dong Ping-Wong. He raised concerns about potential loopholes and the risk of contributing to gentrification in Chinatown, emphasizing the importance of preserving the project’s initial inclusive vision.

As + POOL inches closer to becoming a reality, the journey encapsulates the dedication and perseverance of its designers, the nonprofit organization, and supporters. The project not only promises a unique swimming experience beneath the city’s skyline but also underscores the challenges and considerations inherent in realizing a visionary idea in the bustling urban landscape of New York City.

Building Pools With MAINTENANCE IN MIND

Edwards Pool Construction, based in Wichita, Kansas, has steadily carved out a niche for itself as the premier pool builder in the area. Headed by the visionary Steve Edwards, a seasoned pool builder and hot rod aficionado, the firm has transformed from its roots in pool service to one of the most respected names in pool construction. This transformation reflects their commitment to not only creating stunning designs but also building pools with service in mind.

Hotrodding Swimming Pools For Better Performance

Steve Edwards, the driving force behind Edwards Pool Construction, has a unique approach to his work. In an

interview with Pool Magazine, he shared his journey, stating, “I never worked for anyone and just reverse-engineered everything as I learned.”

Edwards’ passion for hot rods coupled with his mechanical knowledge has significantly influenced his pool construction techniques. He revels in modifying pool equipment pads for higher performance, drawing parallels between his love for speed and his innovative pool designs.

Averi Edwards, Steve’s daughter, maintains pools for the company. She explained that the service aspect is always an important consideration in her father’s mind. “My dad started in the business servicing pools. He would hot rod equipment pads

and make them easier to work on. That is what is always in the back of his mind when he’s building something.”

Edwards says that her father’s doctrine of building around ease of access for maintenance remains a critical aspect of each and every pool project.

“He’s always thinking, how is this going to be serviced? How are we going to clean this and get a vacuum hose down here? He’s making sure that we have adequate filtration. That the pipe sizes are big enough, that we’ve got enough pumps, enough chlorinators, enough sanitation. These things are always in the back of his mind. So really, by the time that our service guys come in, it makes it really easy on us to take over,” Averi explained.

10 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1

One of the most intriguing aspects of Edwards’ philosophy to building pools with service in mind is his ability to envision three-dimensional structures in his head, a skill that has helped him hone his craft as a builder. “I make my living doing things I’ve never done before and it’s been like that since day one,” explained Edwards. “The art of putting water over an edge or up in the air; that type of plumbing, it all comes back to hot rod knowledge, mechanical knowledge, and my ability to see hydraulics and structure in my head.”

When it comes to designing and constructing pools, Edwards begins with the homeowner and the traditional expectations of Wichita’s conservative market. “Rectangular pools with auto covers are popular out here because we’ve got a lot of wind up here. So how do you dress that up? You curve it up on the inside, curve it up on the deck,” explained Edwards, “most of my design work is on the ground with a can of paint. Once people can see what I’m able to do there are x amount that will just let you go. Those are my favorite projects. I’ve had several clients just turn me loose. Not loose financially, but a little bit architecturally.”

Going outside the box seems to be working for Edwards. One of his most recent projects features killer geometry with an almost ampersandshaped swimming pool and lazy river. The project presented numerous technical challenges and we were eager to learn more about what went into building the vessel.

“This project was brought to me by a builder I’d never heard of,” said Edwards, “he just walked into my shop and threw down a set of plans. That project ended up probably at 10 million, I would think. We shot that pool and it was challenging.”

When an opportunity to hot rod the lazy river aspect of the pool presented itself, Edwards jumped on it. “I made some changes to the lazy river and how it was designed. It’s got two Riverflow, 3000 gallon-a-minute pumps in it. I’ve used Riverflow twice before. Never in a lazy river, but it all works amazing,” said Edwards.

Edwards’s unique ability to find ways to improve the aesthetic of the overall project would foster a unique collaboration with one of the industry’s leading tile artisans.

“They wanted to do tile and we introduced the idea of glass. So we contacted Jimmy Reed. We ended up tenting the pool. It was nice and air-conditioned through the rain and heat and the guys were able to work continuously for six or seven weeks. Then we had to cover the tile up and set for another winter before we ever plastered that pool,” explained Edwards.

The end result of this sophisticated and avant-garde design represents a significant departure from the prototypical geometric-shaped swimming pools typically found throughout the Wichita market. In fact, the design is so unique that one might wonder if this pool in particular might usher a renaissance towards more unconventional designs.

“It’s an incredible pool,” Edwards remarked cheerfully, “you could plop that pool down in California just about anywhere but it’s really crazy for Wichita. I tell people Batman lives there because the Batmobile sitting in front of that house would look right at home.”

The success of this build has already led to more work of this nature for the Wichita pool builder. “I’m lucky to have been a part of this project I thought I’d never build anything like that. I just walked it the other day, and it’s just crazy when you realize you built something like that,” said Edwards. “Now we’ve got two other projects of that scale going at the same time in the same neighborhood. I never would have thought I could build two at the same time, but we’re doing it.”

Two Hot New Products You’ll See POOLSIDE THIS SUMMER

As summer approaches, the anticipation for poolside relaxation and enjoyment continues to grow. We’re as excited about the upcoming swim season ahead as we are about two hot new products we recently had the chance to check out at the PSP Deck Expo in Las Vegas and again at the Pool & Spa Show in Atlantic City.

Tenjam, a relative newcomer to the pool furniture space, unveiled two exciting new furniture products that promise to elevate the swimming pool experience. The company, based in central Minnesota, specializes in roto

molded (rotationally molded) furniture. Since its inception back in 2013, Tenjam has made a significant impact in the outdoor furniture industry. In 2020, the firm expanded its horizons with the launch of its in-pool furniture series, which has been a hit with consumers and professionals alike.

Mike Collins, President of Tenjam shared insights into the success, stating, “We’ve been just crushing it and coming out with lots of new products. Seems like every few months we’ve got another new product we’re launching.”

One of the standouts in their line has undoubtedly been their Shayz lounger, the flagship product in

their Splash series line. “Shayz is by far our hottest product,” said Collins, “we saw almost 500% growth in the Splash series product line thanks to Shayz last year.”

With the success of the Shayz lounger, Tenjam is looking to expand its footprint in the in-pool furniture category. Consequently, they have been working hard to bring new products to market in time for the 2024 swim season.

Two intriguing new products they’ve brought to market caught our eye as potential hot sellers for the upcoming 2024 swim season.

12 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1

Woosah Chair: Unveiling Comfort and Style:

One of the products that stole the spotlight at this year’s PSP Deck Expo was Tenjam’s Woosah chair which boasts a combination of ergonomic contouring and a slight bounce designed into the base, providing unparalleled comfort.

Mike Collins emphasized the meticulous design process, stating, “When we designed Woosah, we spent so much time on just getting the profile of that seat down. When we brought it to market, it was an instant hit but we couldn’t put it into the pool because it had a stainless steel base. Finally, we developed a Woosah chair that has a plastic base.”

The seat is constructed with polyethylene material for supreme impact strength and low maintenance. The stackable chairs thus far have been a hit with hotels and resorts said Collins, who predicts the product is bound to resonate just as well with residential pool owners.

“We’re definitely price competitive,” said Collins, “and the cool thing about the Woosah chair, is you can use it as your regular patio Adirondack chair, but also put it in the pool when you want to relax in the water. That eliminates the need to have a bunch of extra chairs just sitting around.”

Infinity Sun Shelf: Elevating Your Pool Oasis

The second star of the show for Tenjam was their new Infinity Freestanding Sun Shelf, a patentpending freestanding sun shelf that promises to transform your poolside oasis.

“Our Sales Manager, John Griffard, is always coming up with crazy ideas,” said Collins, “he has a pool that’s like 50 years old and wanted to add a sun shelf to it.” The quotes he received on adding on a sun shelf started at around $25,000, which prompted the two to think of a product they could produce at a more attractive price point.

The advent of the Infinity Sun Shelf provides a hassle-free solution for adding a sun shelf to an existing swimming pool. Unlike traditional methods that involve tearing up the yard and pool deck, Infinity can be delivered, installed, and ready for use the very same day. The only requirement is adding a new plumbing line to the back of the unit.

The Infinity Sun Shelf (left) features an 80” wide waterfall curtain, adding both visual appeal and the soothing sound of flowing water to your poolside experience. With a water depth of up to 8 inches, it accommodates various in-pool furniture brands, including Tenjam’s loungers and chairs.

Collins shared the collaboration that led to the development of Infinity, stating, “A couple of years ago, we met a group of guys from B Squared Pools. We partnered with them to actually make a freestanding sun shelf that you could just simply place at the side of your existing pool and then run a water line to it. Basically, that gives you a freestanding sun shelf at an installed price point of like $10,000 or less.”

“We already have a bunch of preorders on the sun shelf,” said Collins, “we’re going to bring it to the Atlantic City show and that’s going to help get more eyeballs on it. I think once people see just how easy it is to set up, we’ll see sales continue to increase. Right now it’s all about exposure.”

Pool owners have every reason to be excited about the Woosah Chair and Infinity Sun Shelf, as these two innovative products bring a fresh wave of comfort, style, and transformative features to enhance the poolside experience. The two products are priced attractively to make adding pool furniture easier and more affordable than ever before.

Brad Holley’s Miami Vice-Inspired Design

WINS MILLION DOLLAR POOL CHALLENGE

The International Pool & Spa Expo witnessed a spectacle this year as Brad Holley’s Miami Vice-inspired design took center stage at the Million Dollar Pool Challenge. Holley’s innovative approach and captivating design not only wowed the judges but left an indelible mark on the pool and spa industry.

In an exclusive interview with Brad Holley, he shared insights into his unconventional journey into the world of pool and spa design.

Holley had no formal education in design before joining the industry. His foray into the field began while working in commercial construction, where he started using SketchUp as a hobby.

Holley’s turning point occurred when he stumbled upon a job listing for a design assistant position with the legendary Randy Angell.

“I spent eight and a half years being mentored by Randy Angell, and that really was my education,” Holley explained. “He taught me everything that I know, kind of taught me how to see the world through his eyes and how to come up with designs.”

The captivating design showcased at the Million Dollar Pool Challenge drew inspiration from the iconic Miami Vice theme. Holley infused elements of fun into his creation, cleverly incorporating the show’s intro credits into the video presentation. The whimsical touch provided a unique and

engaging perspective, setting his entry apart from the competition.

Reflecting on the development of his concept, Holley shared the challenges he faced initially. “I usually can see a space and figure out just a general direction to go in with my design. But I was completely stumped and just lost for quite a while,” he admitted. However, he found inspiration in unexpected places, particularly in the lifestyle description of the hypothetical clients, who had a penchant for yachting.

The journey into Holley’s vision begins with the front approach and the driveway. Holley introduces a unique address block monument sign that doubles as a bench seat, creatively lit with the contestant number “4210.”

14 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1

The driveway, adorned with geometric polygons, features channels lit from underneath, covered with acrylic panels, creating a vibrant display of colors at night. Holley’s Miami Vice-inspired palette of pale blue, pale pink, and white sets the tone for the entire design.

Ascending the steps, visitors encounter a shallow fountain area with a sunken planter box, creating the illusion of water pouring into an infinite loop. A hanging day bed adds a touch of relaxation and sets the stage for the Latin art masterpiece—a steel panel portraying the silhouette of a woman’s face, backlit with fire, creating a captivating nighttime effect.

As the journey continues, the walls surrounding the backyard come into focus, showcasing a harmonious blend of stucco and laser-cut steel panels. The double-layered steel panels offer an organic and meshy feel, adding a dynamic element to the design. Entering through a centered hinge gate with off-center hinges, visitors are greeted by the splash pad area.

The splash pad features a striking two-headed Aztec serpent, reimagined in 3D, spitting water from both sides and complemented by jets and scupper elements. The 360-degree acrylic circular spa, with its raised perimeter overflow and acrylic exterior, presents a unique design challenge that Holley ingeniously addresses by incorporating raised back support walls for spa jets.

The pool area unfolds with a perimeter overflow beam, a large wet deck hosting four ledge loungers, and a mirrored wet deck on the opposite side with two hanging cocoon chairs. A cantilevered fire feature adds a touch of drama, suspended over the water. A swim-up bar, featuring an acrylic wall, allows a transparent view to the dry side. Between two hanging chairs, palm trees protrude through a halo-shaped cutout in the structure, creating a stunning visual.

Ascending the stairs to the second floor of the structure, visitors encounter a lounging and entertaining space, a putting green, and bar seating lit from underneath. The second-floor design provides an elevated perspective of the palm tree canopies, adding a touch of nature to

the luxury setting. To access this oasis, visitors must cross over the lazy river, navigating dual bridges adorned with Latin-inspired diode mortise skulls in pink, white, and blue.

Moving away from the pool area to the covered patio, Holley faced a significant challenge: the design could not be attached to the home. Undeterred, he introduced a bar island with its own standalone structure, topped with a semi-shade steel structure. Synthetic green walls, cascading over the support beam, create a lush and inviting atmosphere, cleverly augmented by pendant lighting.

POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1 15

When asked about the key elements that proved most challenging to incorporate into his design, Holley humorously replied, “Short answer, everything.” He acknowledged the common struggle among contestants to fit the extensive wishlist into the allotted space.

The lot size itself posed a challenge as participants grappled with the initial impression of ample space, only to find it quickly diminishing.

“The lot size was really deceiving. You thought you had a lot to work with, and then as you start putting real elements in place, you realize how small it gets,” Holley revealed.

Despite initial uncertainties, Holley received positive feedback on his Miami Vice inspired design.

Reflecting on the competition, he admitted feeling intimidated by the outstanding work presented by other finalists. “As soon as I saw all of the other submissions sitting there at the final judging, I was already mentally preparing myself for fifth place,” he confessed. Holley expressed gratitude and admiration for his fellow competitors, emphasizing the high level of skill and creativity displayed by all. “Everybody brought outstanding work,” he acknowledged.

As we celebrate Brad Holley’s success, it’s essential to recognize the efforts of the organizers, Mike Farley and Reid Schindler, who orchestrated the annual Million Dollar Pool Challenge. The competition not only showcases exceptional talent but also provides

a platform for industry professionals to push the boundaries of pool and spa design.

Holley’s victory comes with additional perks, including a $10,000 cash prize courtesy of River Flow by Current Systems and a coveted spot on the judges’ panel in 2024.

The recognition of winning the Million Dollar Pool Design challenge not only acknowledges his prowess but also positions Holley as a rising star in the industry, poised to contribute further to the world of pool and spa design.

Enhancing Watershapes With INFLOOR CLEANING SYSTEMS

In the ever-evolving world of pool technology, Paramount Pool & Spa Systems has emerged as a frontrunner, boasting over 90% market share in the in-floor cleaning sector. Established in the late ‘60s by the Ghiz Family and later acquired by Hayward, the company’s commitment to innovation and customer service has propelled it to the forefront of the industry.

Today, Paramount’s in-floor cleaning system has become a cornerstone of pool maintenance in many custom inground pools and a game-changer in enhancing the overall swimming pool experience.

John Anderson, Regional Manager for Paramount, explained why forward-thinking pool builders are leaning toward in-floor systems as a way to maintain the integrity of the swimming pool in the overall scheme of the backyard canvas.

Changing Perceptions About InFloor Cleaning Technology

“When I was building pools, electronics controls were very simple. These days, everything’s gotten extremely complicated,” explained Anderson, “We went from the Flintstones to the Jetsons in less than 20 years.”

“Many builders today still don’t truly understand in-floor systems. I’ll be honest with you, back when I was building pools, I didn’t either. I wasn’t into plumbing a whole bunch of pipe on the bottom of the floor and the additional cost associated with that,” said Anderson.

“What I found out later on was that a lot of high-end builders with unique circumstances didn’t want a robotic pool cleaner or hoses floating in their work of art. In the course of those 20 years, we went from swimming pools to water shapes. Now the entire industry is looking at how the

backyard is more of a work of art than a cement pond,” explained Anderson.

Science Behind The System

At the heart of Paramount’s in-floor cleaning system lies a specific water curtain design coupled with its patented PCC system which effectively cleans 99% of a swimming pool’s surface. Tailored to accommodate the unique dimensions of each pool, this system boasts a patented “Collection Zone” and automated debris removal functionality

Operating on the principle of pressurized water, the PCC system efficiently suspends dirt, facilitating its removal by the pool’s filtration system. The system’s innovation lies in its patented water-actuated distributor valve, strategically directing the flow of water to various cleaning nozzles in a sequential manner.

18 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1

This ensures a thorough and systematic cleaning process, optimizing the overall performance of the pool cleaning and circulation system.

Ease of Installation

Ease of integration is a big factor of why more pool builders than ever are looking to infloor as a viable solution explained Anderson. “What’s nice about our system is that it’s 100% hydraulically driven. Our systems integrate with any pump and any smart technology,” said Anderson.

“All installers really need to do is get water to the valve, and we’ll take care of the rest,” said Anderson, “that’s all part of our design. We do a CAD drawing that lays everything out specifically and tells the contractor where to plumb, where to put all our products laid out with the schematics that are required for the plumbers to do what they need to do and then the process for the finishers to do their work.”

Technology Innovations

Paramount’s flagship product has undoubtedly been the PCC system, however, the PVR system continues to gain traction in the market. “One of the systems I push the most for new builders is our PVR system. Out of the dealers I’ve signed the past twelve months, 99% of them opted to go with the PVR because it’s easier to install,” said Anderson. “It’s a ratcheted, self-cleaning nozzle that’ll clean anywhere from six to ten feet.”

“We’ve innovated on that because a lot of pools are nine feet deep or more,” explained Anderson, “the sweep radius up to the rear wall usually inhibits standard in-floor system cleaners, because they won’t rotate properly. On the PVR the head actually rotates.”

“We have an MDX-R3 safety drain, which is VGB compliant and LA County approved,” explained Anderson, “we also use a BuzzTop, which is basically just a channel drain with a lid that allows debris to be captured. Our application also features a canister that’s in the deck, or can be stationed back by the equipment pad.”

While Paramount’s in-floor cleaning technology has been a mainstay in custom concrete inground pools for years, they have also developed applications for vinyl liner and fiberglass swimming pools as well. “Our Vanish line is ideal for the vinyl market and actually is flush to the finish of the vinyl liner. Our Vantage products are used by a lot of dealers venturing into fiberglass pools,” said Anderson.

For those embarking on a swimming pool project, an in-floor cleaning system is an exhilarating prospect, offering near maintenance-free benefits. Paramount’s in-floor cleaning systems go beyond mere cleaning by actively circulating water and chemicals in pools from the bottom up. This dynamic circulation not only ensures a consistently clean and swim-ready pool but also serves as an eco-friendly solution. In-floor systems enhance both the aesthetic and functional aspects of a swimming pool, promising pristine water and cost-effective maintenance; making it a no-brainer for many pool owners.

In-floor cleaning technology has become a favored choice among today’s top pool designers seeking to preserve the pristine aesthetics of their meticulously crafted waterscapes. Paramount’s in-floor cleaning system, in particular, addresses the concerns of designers who aim to maintain a clean and clutter-free canvas without the intrusion of hoses or robotic cleaners within the pool.

High-end pool designers often work with unique circumstances, such as custom shapes, negative edge basins, spas, or lazy rivers. Paramount’s in-floor system’s adaptability to various pool types and styles makes it an ideal choice for designers dealing with unconventional and bespoke projects. Sustainability & Swimming Pools

DIVING INTO AN ECO-FRIENDLY FUTURE

Let’s face it, today, sustainability and swimming pools go hand-in-hand. As the world becomes more conscious of the environment, the quest for eco-friendly solutions extends to every aspect of our lives, including recreational spaces like swimming pools.

The traditional image of a pool conjures up thoughts of chemical treatments and high energy consumption. However, the emergence of eco-friendly swimming pools offers a refreshing alternative, incorporating cuttingedge technologies to minimize environmental impact.

6 Noteworthy Innovations in Sustainability

The key to achieving a sustainable swimming pool lies in reimagining water treatment. According to

insights from Piscine Global, a leading authority in pool and wellness events, several groundbreaking technologies are reshaping the industry:

Selling Your Pool Business? KNOW YOUR WORTH

Selling a pool business requires more than just crunching numbers and applying a basic formula. A friend and colleague of mine in the pool industry learned this the hard way.

Despite having yearly sales of $2 million and an EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) of $200,000, he initially believed his business was worth between $600,000 and $1,000,000. However, a deeper analysis revealed that the true worth was closer to zero. One thing became clear to me, if you’re thinking of selling your pool company, it certainly helps to know your worth.

Figuring Out What Your Pool Company Is Worth

Understanding the key components that determine a

pool company’s value is crucial for anyone considering selling their business. The primary drivers are EBITDA and multiples of EBITDA.

EBITDA: The Foundation of Value

EBITDA serves as a fundamental indicator, representing the operational profitability of a business. Investors often look for businesses with a 20% profit margin, valuing them at three to five times their EBITDA.

For example, a pool company generating $1 million annually with an EBITDA of $200,000, the estimated value could range from $600,000 to $1 million.

Some simplify the valuation process by associating the value directly with revenue. For instance, a business with $1 million in revenue might be considered worth $1 million. However, this simplistic approach

neglects the nuances that savvy investors scrutinize.

Factors That Decrease Value: Beware of Red Flags

Merely relying on the EBITDA formula is insufficient. Investors consider various factors beyond the numbers.

For example, a business owner not paying themselves a salary, might falsely believe their profit is the true measure of success. However, investors aren’t just buying a business; they’re buying a sustainable operation. Industries with low profitability or thin profit margins are sure to deter investors.

Moreover, risks such as high turnover rates, equipment issues, or seasonal businesses with no new customers can decrease confidence, making investors hesitant to pay a premium.

As businesses scale in revenue, the multiples of EBITDA change significantly. Larger companies with steady revenue streams may be valued at five to seven times EBITDA, or even higher if they go public. Patents on proprietary technology can further elevate the valuation.

Consider Instagram, a company with only 13 employees valued at $1 billion when acquired by Facebook. Patented technology can attract major players and launch bidding wars, driving multiples into the stratosphere.

What Are Investors Looking For?

Investors typically look for several key factors that can make buying a pool company more attractive. These factors can contribute to the overall value and potential return on investment. Here are some important considerations when selling your pool company:

Consistent and growing revenue streams are attractive to investors. A pool company with a stable customer base and recurring revenue from services such as maintenance contracts can be more appealing.

Healthy profit margins demonstrate the company’s ability to manage costs effectively.

A large and diverse customer base with long-term contracts can provide a predictable income stream and reduce the risk of revenue fluctuations.

Contracts for pool construction, maintenance, and repair services can enhance the company’s value by ensuring ongoing business.

A strong reputation for quality service, customer satisfaction, and reliability can significantly enhance the company’s value. Positive customer reviews and testimonials contribute to brand recognition.

Established brand equity can be a competitive advantage and attract new customers.

A pool company that serves a broad geographic area or has the potential for expansion into new markets may be more appealing to investors looking for growth opportunities.

A diverse customer base across different regions can help mitigate risks associated with local economic downturns.

A skilled and experienced management team is crucial. Investors often look for a team with a proven track record in the pool industry, as well as a history of successful business management.

The presence of knowledgeable and capable leaders can instill confidence in investors

A strong balance sheet, positive cash flow, and manageable debt levels are indicators of financial health.

Clear growth potential, whether through expansion, diversification, or innovation, is attractive to investors seeking a return on their investment.

For pool companies looking to sell, the time to enhance value is now. Going the extra mile by pushing sales, increasing social media presence, and staying relevant can significantly impact the company’s perceived worth. Introducing innovative products can lead to substantial increases in EBITDA and future sale value.

Insights From Skimmer’s

STATE OF POOL SERVICE REPORT

Skimmer, a leading-edge pool service software provider, recently unveiled its “2024 State of Pool Service Report,” a comprehensive analysis based on the invaluable feedback from over 1,700 pool service professionals who responded.

This report delves deep into key facets of the industry, such as market challenges, business structures, pricing strategies, technology adoption, and growth plans. Notably, the report culminates from survey responses from Skimmer’s platform of over 25,000 users as well as insights gleaned from broader market research.

Rising Tides of Costs and Strategic Business Responses

One of the more eye-opening aspects to the report, 73%

of surveyed pool service professionals reported a commendable upswing in revenue in 2023 compared to the previous year. However, the buoyancy in revenue was tempered by a prevailing concern – rising costs. The majority identified escalating costs as the most formidable challenge faced in 2023, with an anticipatory nod to this trend persisting into the unfolding year of 2024.

A significant number of companies are gearing up to address these rising costs by contemplating price adjustments, with nearly 74% of pool professionals signaling their intention to implement price increases in the current year to sustain revenue streams.

In an exclusive interview with Talking Pools Podcast, Jack Nelson, CEO of Skimmer, underscored this critical issue,

stating, “Everyone in the industry feels like costs are going to keep rising. It’s unfortunately an inevitability with sort of inflation. The question is, what are we going to do about it? It’s really interesting to see that most respondents said they were planning on raising prices in order to maintain profit margins.”

Workforce Dynamics and Marketing Strategies

Beyond the realms of financial strategies, the report casts its gaze on the dynamic workforce within the pool service industry. A noteworthy revelation is that 52% of respondents expressed an intent to expand their teams in 2024. This metric supports a positive indicator that most respondents believe the industry will continue to grow rather than contract.

32 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1

One statistic you may find surprising, the report indicated that the majority of service technicians still rely heavily on the age-old method of word-of-mouth referrals, with only a modest 35% reporting that they’re investing in marketing. Nelson, who has experienced this sentiment first hand expressed that this way of thinking might be outdated.

“So many folks in the industry think they don’t need to pay for marketing because they get a lot of referrals,” said Nelson, “that’s true. You can grow your business that way, but you can grow it so much more quickly if you are spending a little bit of marketing. Because most of the industry is still not doing it, there’s a real chance to kind of take advantage of that. It’s a huge opportunity for ambitious pool service companies.”

Technology Integration: The Digital Oasis

In counterpoint to that, one area where the pool industry is embracing technology is business operations. One pivotal aspect of the report indicated an escalating integration of technology within the pool service industry. Approximately 75% of respondents revealed that they are

leveraging software to streamline various aspects of their business operations. This underscores a growing acknowledgment of the pivotal role technology plays in enhancing efficiency, streamlining operations, and staying ahead in a competitive landscape.

“I think knowing your numbers is absolutely critical,” said Nelson, “so is embracing technology to operate your business more efficiently. That’s true whether it’s Skimmer or any other type of technology. I think there’s a tendency to underestimate the cost associated with doing business. Time is money. If you’re accepting a check from a customer because that customer refuses to get on ACH or credit card, there’s time associated with that cost. I think really understanding where you can automate different aspects of your business to save time and money is critical as costs continue to rise.”

Strategic Navigations for Future Growth

One noteworthy observation gleaned from the report is the success of companies that choose to bill separately for chemicals. Businesses charging customers separately for chemicals were on average more profitable than those

who opted to include chemicals in the total price of service.

Including the price of chemicals has traditionally been a more straightforward, fixed-rate structure that is perhaps more easily grasped by pool owners and simplifies billing for pool professionals. However, the drawback lies in the susceptibility to frequent price adjustments due to significant fluctuations in chemical costs.

According to Skimmer’s data analysis, the model that charges extra for chemicals, known as the “plus chems” model, emerges as the most effective strategy in mitigating the impact of both fluctuating chemical costs and variations in weather patterns that might affect chemical usage, providing a robust buffer against such uncertainties.

A Case Study in Sustainability: THE RAIN OCULUS

In the bustling metropolis of Singapore, amidst the grandeur of the Marina Bay Sands complex, an extraordinary fusion of art and engineering stands as a testament to human ingenuity. The “Rain Oculus,” a mesmerizing art installation conceived by the collaborative brilliance of architect Moshe Safdie and artist Ned Kahn, transcends conventional categorizations. Launched June 23, 2010, today it remains a spectacle that not only captivates the senses but also embodies a harmonious balance between practicality, artistic expression, and sustainability.

Construction and Engineering

Crafted with meticulous precision, the “Rain Oculus” is a multifaceted masterpiece—a rain collection system, a skylight, and an urban waterfall that defies gravity. The installation comprises two interconnected pools: a transparent, outdoor pool measuring 70 feet in diameter, and an indoor pool situated two floors below within the Marina Bay Sands resort. Up to 200 tons of water flows at up to 6,000 gallons per minute through the Oculus, creating a captivating whirlpool motion

on the first level, falling two stories through a hole in the center of the Oculus. Crowds often throng, eager to witness the power of this man-made spectacle.

The Rain Oculus at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore holds the distinction of being the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, adding an extra layer of significance to its already captivating presence. The sheer height of the Rain Oculus, combined with its graceful descent from the outdoor transparent pool to the indoor basin, creates a visual spectacle that commands attention.

This engineering marvel serves a dual purpose. The transparent outdoor pool not only allows natural light to illuminate the Marina Bay Sands resort but also becomes a focal point, attracting visitors to witness the dynamic interplay of water in an urban setting. The indoor pool, seamlessly connected to a canal that navigates through The Shoppes, offers an immersive experience. Visitors can traverse the canal in a traditional Chinese sampan, gaining a closer perspective of the “Rain Oculus” and its integration into the architectural tapestry of the resort.

34 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1

Sustainability Significance

Beyond its aesthetic appeal and engineering feats, the “Rain Oculus” embraces sustainability. The water used in the installation and the canal is sourced from rainfall collected in the outdoor pool. This closed-loop system exemplifies eco-conscious design, showcasing the potential for art installations to contribute positively to the environment. The constant recycling and reuse of water underscore the installation’s commitment to sustainable practices, leaving a lasting impact on the discourse surrounding environmental responsibility in art and architecture.

For those exploring Marina Bay Sands, home to the world’s largest rooftop infinity pool, a visit to both elements of the “Rain Oculus” is imperative.

The outdoor and indoor components provide a comprehensive understanding of the artistic and engineering prowess that Safdie and Kahn seamlessly blended in this audacious venture. While the temptation to dive into either pool may be strong, it is essential to emphasize the danger and prohibition of such attempts, underscoring the need for responsible interaction with artistic installations.

The “Rain Oculus” is more than a visual spectacle; it symbolizes innovation, sustainability, and the intersection of art with practicality. As architects and designers continue to push boundaries, this installation serves as a beacon of inspiration. It encourages a reimagining of spaces, emphasizing the importance of functionality, sustainability, and experiential design in our evolving urban landscapes. The lessons from the “Rain Oculus” resonate as a reminder that art, when thoughtfully integrated, has the power to elevate the human experience and contribute positively to our built environment.

The Lamborghini Pool WITH JONNY NALEPA

A unique collaboration led to one homeowner getting the pool of his dreams.

In the realm of opulence and architectural innovation, a unique project has emerged, blending the world of high-end automobiles with the tranquility of a residential swimming pool. Nestled in the waterfront properties of South Florida, a cutting-edge pool, dubbed the “Lambo Pool,” has been crafted to showcase a homeowner’s Lamborghini in a mesmerizing aquatic display. This extraordinary venture was a collaboration between Foxterra Design, Custom Pool Systems, and Jonny Nalepa, a distinguished pool professional and aquatics engineer from Smart Aquatics.

A consultant on projects throughout the Sunshine state, Nalepa’s burgeoning firm Smart Aquatics recently had the opportunity to collaborate on numerous high profile projects, the latest was completed several months ago and has already begun turning heads.

“The Lambo Pool” project, as Jonny Nalepa affectionately calls it, was brought to life through the vision of entrepreneur Alex Moeller, a passionate car enthusiast and homeowner in Davie, Florida. Moeller’s desire was to seamlessly integrate his prized Lamborghini Aventador SVJ into his backyard, an idea that prompted him to engage the expertise of Foxterra Design.

38 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1

One homeowner decided to build a swimming pool to showcase his $250,000 Lamborghini.

POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1 39

Foxterra Design, led by the innovative duo Justin and Nate Fox, known for their wild and incredible designs, took on the challenge of creating a pool that would not only house the luxurious vehicle but also serve as a breathtaking water feature. The project was further brought to fruition by Custom Pool Systems, the builders responsible for transforming the conceptual design into a tangible reality.

Jonny Nalepa, in his role as a consultant, played a crucial part in transposing Foxterra Design’s conceptual renderings into a working set of construction drawings that Custom Pool Systems used to physically build the pool. With the Lamborghini being a high-value asset, Nalepa and his team took meticulous steps to prevent any potential

damage. This involved extensive research, including reaching out to Lamborghini to obtain precise measurements and specifications for the vehicle.

Technical Challenges Bringing The Project To Fruition

“With a vehicle that’s probably over $250,000, we wanted to make sure that we didn’t damage the car by making the water too deep or when the car is driving over the perimeter overflow there,” said Nalepa, “I mean, there’s a slot with a gutter underneath, so we have a cantilevered condition. We got to make sure this thing’s going to work right.”

“This one happened to be on a grass edge, but we also had to make sure that we could support

the vehicle going over this perimeter overflow as many times as the client wanted to move it, “ explained Nalepa.

“We took Foxterra’s design and we developed it to make sure that we met all the setbacks and the codes and everything for Miami. We did our due diligence and were pretty thorough,” said Nalepa.

“We looked up the actual model, make and model of the vehicle. We measured the height of it. We measured the width of the wheels, because there are some bubblers in that area where the car is parked. So we don’t want the car to drive over the bubblers, or at the very least, if the car does drive over them, we don’t want them to crack because most pool fixtures are plastic,” Nalepa explained.

The Art of Engineering The Art of Engineering

Since 1980, Aquamatic pool covers have focused on safety, energy savings and ease of use. With our technology, we are setting a higher standard through innovation and design. Supported by a 20 year mechanical warranty, and the most standard features of any automatic cover in the industry.

In his detailed explanation, Nalepa mentioned, “We contacted Lamborghini, and we got all the specifications. We confirmed what the max slope was. The car can go up and down and left and right. And we wanted to make sure that we had enough water to overflow this feature so that you could visually see that it’s a water feature.”

“We had to modify what our typical perimeter overflow detail is,” explained Nalepa, “there’s a gutter beneath, in this case, a stainless steel overhang. It’s like an L bracket almost that overhangs a gutter and comes almost right up against the pool structure. So all you see is a little strip, but in the area where the car goes over, we didn’t want to have a full overhang of six or eight inches.”

“The car is pretty heavy, and you never know what’s going to happen,” said Nalepa, “someone could park it and stop. The back wheels could be sitting on that overhang, so we had to account for that and beef up the structure on that side.”

The way this was done is pretty ingenious, according to Nalepa. “We removed the drop piping from that entry area and wanted to make sure that the structure was robust enough so we got rid of all the PVC plumbing that goes in a typical perimeter overflow edge condition. Doing it that way we could increase the structural integrity of the concrete. We kind of made it a minimal gutter where the overhang is only a few inches.”

“We went through a couple of different iterations, by the way, before we landed on that one. In the end, it’s kind of a simple solution to achieve the look Foxterra was going for,” said Nalepa.

Despite the difficult technical challenges, the Lambo Pool was a resounding success. Nalepa expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We were excited to work on this project, but it was definitely a challenging one.”

One of the standout moments for Nalepa was the opportunity to drive the Lamborghini onto the

feature, a surreal experience for any car enthusiast. Reflecting on the uniqueness of the project, he remarked, “It’s so far out of something that you can dream up, the fact that Foxterra was like, ‘Let’s put it in the pool.’ Most people may have just parked it next to the pool or something like that, but they went for it.”

Custom Pool Systems also knocked it out of the park on this project. “The perimeter overflow is impressive. There are no dry spots. They did an incredible job executing and building this project. There’s a level of craftsmanship that you can see a mile away. It looks and feels expensive and that’s through material selections and just the way the mitered edges are and devils in the details kinds of things,” said Nalepa.

JC Escudero stands out in this regard for his transparency and honesty in explaining the dark side of the pool industry to his customers. The founder of J Designs Pool & Spa, a boutique pool construction firm in Los Angeles, Escudero has taken a unique approach to his craft. Unafraid to delve into the nuances of the pool construction process, he has become a vocal advocate for educating consumers about the dos and don’ts of building a pool.

Escudero’s journey into the pool construction business began with a revelation during his tenure at a large builder. He shares, “I used to work for a pretty large builder, and when we decided to open our own

company, I knew exactly what I didn’t want to do. I didn’t want to do that type of volume. With that brings a lot of issues because you don’t have the time to really cater to that many clients and have the same attention to detail.”

His vision was clear – to be a boutique builder, focusing on craftsmanship, larger projects, and fostering better relationships with clients. The inception of J Designs marked a departure from the norm, a conscious effort to create a more personalized and quality-driven approach to pool construction.

A s Escudero reflects on the genesis of his company, he recalls, “We knew we had a big market at the turn of the 2008 mortgage crisis, and we used to work more in the Riverside area.” However, economic downturns prompted a strategic shift. “People were not buying

pools at that time. The economy was upside down,” he notes. Escudero decided to move to Los Angeles, specifically the San Fernando Valley, tapping into a lucrative market despite the challenging economic conditions of ‘08.

Escudero was eager to set himself apart with his commitment to openness and transparency with customers. Many pool builders shy away from discussing the potential pitfalls of the construction process, fearing it may deter potential clients. However, Escudero believes in addressing the elephant in the room.

“I’ve always been a very straightforward person. I open my mouth. Sometimes I get in trouble by doing so, but at the same time, I like to tell people the way things are,” he explains.

Escudero emphasizes the importance of informing

clients about the intricacies of pool construction.

“There are key components that every pool needs and explain what those are. I tell my customers about the roadblocks that exist in pool construction and what they absolutely need to know,” he says. By laying out the challenges and limitations, Escudero ensures that clients are well-informed and their expectations are met without any misconceptions.

To extend this philosophy beyond one-on-one interactions, Escudero and his team have created an educational system. Through blogs, articles, and videos on their website, they provide valuable insights into the pool-building process. “I decided with my wife Liliana to put it together in the form of an educational system for our clients so they can easily, by themselves at their leisure, watch videos or read blogs and articles to impart them with that knowledge,” he shares.

This dedication to education is rooted in Escudero’s desire to establish a bond with clients before even meeting them. “When I get to their house, they already know me. There’s already a bond without even meeting them,” he states. By fostering this connection, Escudero ensures that clients are comfortable and well-informed, setting the stage for a successful collaboration.

One of Escudero’s videos called “The Dark Side of the Pool Industry” discusses issues that can come up with hiring unlicensed contractors, dealing with permitting hurdles, and how misinformation can lead to confusion and dissatisfaction.

A critical issue that Escudero addresses is the prevalence of unlicensed builders in the pool industry. In one of his videos, he unveils a startling fact – the swimming pool industry boasts the highest number of complaints to the California State License Board

(CSLB). He attributes this to the influx of unlicensed individuals posing as contractors, taking advantage of unsuspecting clients.

Escudero’s concerns go beyond merely acknowledging the problem; he actively seeks solutions. “The industry has been taken by a lot of scammers that don’t have a license that claim to be contractors. That happens everywhere, not only in California,” he points out. His website serves as a platform to guide consumers on what to look for in a contractor, stressing the importance of licenses, insurance, and adherence to the law.

Escudero’s commitment to transparency extends to the financial aspects of pool construction, particularly the often-misunderstood issue of payment schedules. He addresses this concern with a straightforward perspective, stating, “I get a lot of the times clients asking about payments, and I tell them payments are supposed to be by law, not 30% upfront like they charge in some markets. Who in the right mind is going to give you $40,000 upfront?”

“Just having a license is not enough,” Escudero asserts. He acknowledges the shortcomings in the current licensing system, where individuals can obtain licenses with minimal knowledge of the trade. This, he believes, contributes to the industry’s negative reputation, leading to client dissatisfaction and distrust.

In his pursuit of improving the industry as a whole, Escudero doesn’t shy away from sharing the less glamorous aspects of the trade. He urges consumers to be vigilant, emphasizing the need for proper payment schedules, a clear understanding of construction processes, and awareness of potential red flags.

Ground Penetrating Radar Is Like HAVING XRAY VISION

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) – allows contractors to actually “see” inside pool structures. GPR systems are perfect for locating reinforcing steel and determining the thickness of the concrete.

Another helpful aspect of GPR is its use in locating elements inside of framed buildings, pipes, and conduits. Though these systems typically are priced at over $12,000, once prorated across many jobs, the cost is minuscule, while the benefits can be monumental.

Just What is GPR Anyway?

Ground Penetrating Radar is a geophysical method that uses radar pulses to image the subsurface of the ground. It is a non-destructive and non-intrusive technique commonly employed in various fields, including archaeology, geology, environmental studies, civil engineering, and utility detection. The primary purpose of GPR is to identify and map subsurface features, anomalies, or objects without the need for excavation.

46 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1

How Does It Work?

GPR works by emitting short pulses of electromagnetic waves into the ground. These radar pulses penetrate the subsurface and interact with different materials and structures.

As the waves encounter boundaries between materials, some of the energy is reflected back to the surface.

The GPR antenna receives these reflections, and the system processes the signals to create a detailed image of the subsurface.

GPR is widely used for utility detection, subsurface mapping, and construction applications, providing valuable information without the need for excavation.

Using GPR for Non-Destructive Testing

Today, there are a number of solid reasons to be using a ground penetrating radar to scan your pool shells. GPR is a nondestructive method to determine what is actually occurring inside of the concrete, without having to drill cores or demolish concrete.

Radar allows experts to see the rebar schedule and depth within concrete. Pool construction professionals have even used them to validate the presence of bonding clamps and wire, when inspections were missed (for other contractors).

Use of Ground Penetrating Radar in Remodeling Swimming Pools

For contractors, being able to precisely locate the placement of the reinforcing steel is invaluable. When planning for coring a shell for pool lighting, add plumbing or coring for samples, it is critical to know where the steel is located.

Hitting a rebar while coring can easily damage a $500 core bit. Worse yet, a handheld drill binds and kicks back, breaking the user’s thumb.

GPR For Pool Builders & Contractors

Today, construction technology is evolving. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has become a valuable tool for pool builders and contractors in various aspects of their work. Here are some ways in which GPR can be beneficial for professionals in the pool construction industry:

1. Locating Utilities

2. Identifying Subsurface Anomalies

3. Mapping Soil Stratigraphy

4. Detecting Void Spaces

5. Quality Control and Inspection

6. Time and Cost Savings

7. Ensuring Compliance with Regulations

After stripping the plaster, scanning the shell can definitively determine if there’s sufficient shotcrete coverage over the steel. If it’s insufficient, then the pool can be “flashed” with additional shotcrete (at an

additional charge).

This will require new coping and tile as well, as the interior dimensions will change. In my own personal firm’s pool remodeling contracts, we have a disclaimer about shotcrete thickness.

We will scan the shell for free, but if there is an inadequate amount of coverage, there will be a change order to add shotcrete and adjust the coping, tile and fittings.

Think of this as a potential profit center. You can actually show the owners the location and depth of the rebar.

GPR companies charge $500600 for a 1-hour visit. You can see how quickly owning a GPR unit can pay for itself. After a while, it will actually start earning you money! A Proceq GP8800 can be had for around $12,000 plus the cost of an iPad.

The Great Pool Debate CONTINUES TO RAGE ON

The great debate of the pool industry has always been about pools built with serviceability in mind. Pool service pros are constantly saying that builders do not consider what a pool needs to be serviceable.

They claim the builder only cares about the aesthetics of the design and cost. Are they right? In some cases the service pros are. However, there are quality builders who wish to produce an ideal product but run into obstacles, such as customer preferences, that make it difficult to do that.

When I asked pool services pros on Facebook what they would like pool builders to consider for the pros coming to the job afterward, I received dozens of comments.

Responses ranged from salesmen with claims that purchasing chemical automation and sanitization would eliminate the need for the service pros to the actual installation of equipment and plumbing.

Top 5 Complaints Service Pros Have With Builders

1. Communication with the pool owner about maintenance

Recently, I was on a job site where the homeowner chose to use black tile on their infinity edge wall. Luckily, their builder had mentioned that using that particular tile can require regular cleaning from scale build-up. As time has passed, the homeowner has been comfortable with their choice and the maintenance needs associated with their material selections. This is not always a situation.

According to Peter Wiedermann in Perth, Australia, it is quite common for builders to tell their clients swimming pools only need to be serviced once a month since they have filtration and chemical automation.

As the great pool debate rages on, maintenance professionals know, no matter what you have installed it needs to be monitored closely to make sure that components are functioning correctly. If there is a lack of education among homeowners, it creates mistrust between pool service professionals and consumers.

48 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1

2. “Please stop plastering lights on the wall!!! Is this too much to ask??” commented Kathleen Maloney with Armadillo Pools in Sacramento, CA

When the pool service professional goes to replace pool lights, it is extremely common, especially when inch-and-a-half lights are used, for them to be plastered in.

This is a problem because in order to remove the light and replace it with a new one, service techs will need to remove the plaster around the light. This causes higher replacement costs and additional concerns with the homeowner about how much damage might be done by removing the light.

Luckily, there are ways to avoid this from happening. You can wait to install lights until after the pool surface is completed. This may add additional labor costs for the builder because of the extra visit but is preferred with future maintenance in mind.

If the extra visit is a concern, many light manufacturers include plaster caps you can place on lights prior to plastering. This can also help avoid plaster build-up on the fixture. In addition, there are nicheless wall fittings you can place on the conduit or pipe used for the lights. This provides a ring that the plaster installer can build the surface around in order to avoid contact with the lights.

3. “More than one skimmer, one shallow one deep, do it!” said Gregory Wilker

There should be one skimmer for every 800 sq ft of surface area on residential pools and every 500 sq ft of surface area on commercial pools. Ideally, placing them at either end or equally spread out their purpose helps to remove oil and debris from the pool. Pool

designers and builders need to take into consideration the variety of elements in the area around the pool when adding skimmers.

As many pool service professionals have experienced, when there is a high foliage area, one skimmer cannot contain high amounts of debris in a short period of time. This becomes problematic and leads to more frequent visits. In turn, we ask customers to check skimmer baskets frequently between visits or risk the pump running without adequate water flow. Yes, adding additional skimmers adds additional costs but this is where communication between builders and service technicians can help homeowners understand those additional costs.

4. Understand the pool sweep line needs to be accessible

How many times have you walked into a yard with a beautiful natural pool design to find the pool sweep line access is blocked by a rock or unreachable from the deck due to a tanning ledge? Per manufacturers’ recommendations, pool sweep lines need to be six inches below the water level in the center of the pool for optimal cleaning.

For builders, this can be a challenge when implementing this due to design or homeowner-specific requests. Ideally, pool service professionals want the builders to avoid placing rocks and/or landscaping being placed right above the pool sweep line. They would like to be able to access these lines from the deck without the need to physically get into the pool. The reason for promoting accessibility here is to ease future repairs and servicing of the pool sweep.

5. “Realize everything they install will eventually need to be serviced or repaired.”

Out of all the problems pool professionals have with pool builds, the amount of space for an equipment pad and the amount of space between pieces of equipment is without a doubt the the numer one complaint.

I know from my experience, that when I walk into a yard for a warranty call there are many times I think to myself as I turn the corner, “What the hell were they thinking.” When a builder is planning the equipment pad, they have a few obstacles. They have to look at the property lines, setbacks, and easements. They, also, have to consider clearance for heaters, walkways, and customer preferences. This can make it challenging to create the proper amount of real estate for the equipment pad.

From the service pro standpoint, yes, we would love spacious equipment sets, but we do understand its limits. What the pool service pro wants is enough room to open a filter, remove the pump without having to cut plumbing, and to be able to service the salt cell with some ease to name a few. They, also, want to have enough space in suction and return manifolds for repairs without having to cut concrete or requiring reconstruction of the entire manifold for a minor plumbing repair.

Ultimately, service professionals and builders have the same mission. Creating a pleasing environment for homeowners and their families to enjoy. This can be achieved with consideration on both sides.

MPG - Supporting The Next Generation OF POOL BUILDERS

For more than 62 years, Master Pools Guild (MPG) has been a beacon of excellence in the pool industry, providing a unique platform for collaboration, education, and support among its members. Founded in 1962 by a group of visionary pool builders in California, MPG has evolved into an exclusive international network of custom pool builders, with a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of construction and ethical practices.

At the helm of MPG stands its Executive Director, Teri Wiltshire, who brings over 15 years of experience in the pool and spa industry to her role. In a recent interview, Wiltshire shed light on the organization’s history, mission, and the transition into her position as Executive Director.

Wiltshire emphasized the familial nature of MPG, stating, “Our

group is tight-knit, 100 members. They have always been incredibly supportive. We’re a close family.” This cohesion is crucial as it fosters a spirit of openness and communication, a unique characteristic in an industry where competitors often find themselves at odds.

Continuing a Proud Tradition of Excellence

Since its inception, MPG’s mission has remained focused on communication, networking, and continuing education. Wiltshire notes that one remarkable aspect of the organization is the emergence of third and fourthgeneration members, who, having grown up within the organization, contribute to smooth transitions in ownership and management within their respective companies.

Contrary to misconception, MPG is not a buying group.

While they do provide a small annual rebate to members based on their purchasing, the organization’s primary focus is on sharing knowledge and education. Wiltshire clarified, “Overwhelmingly our purpose is sharing and education. We provide our members with the continuing education they need to stay at the top of their game.”

Becoming a Member of Master Pools Guild

Membership in MPG is by invitation only, and the organization maintains a rigorous vetting process to ensure the highest standards in construction and ethical practices. Wiltshire outlined the meticulous process, including reference checks, discussions with banks and vendors, and the use of digital platforms to assess a business’s online reputation.

50 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1

Wiltshire emphasized, “We want to make the right choice, and we want to make sure that we are the right choice for that organization as well.” This stringent selection process reflects MPG’s commitment to maintaining a family-like atmosphere within the organization.

Integrity, honesty, and honorability are foundational cornerstones for MPG and its members. Wiltshire stated, “All of those qualities are extremely important to us,” and laborated on the guidelines for becoming an MPG members. “Some of those guidelines are that the business has to have been in existence for a minimum of five years. There can be no bankruptcies in the past. We ask that they build primarily gunite pools, and there should be no other memberships with other associations in our industry.”

At the core of MPG’s mission is education. The organization fosters collaboration and knowledgesharing with an ongoing collaboration with Genesis organization and Watershape University, providing optional education for members during meetings. Additionally, the organization partners with vendor allies to offer online education components throughout the year, ensuring a continuous flow of knowledge. Wiltshire stated the importance of the relationships MPG has built with its approximately 150 vendor partners through the Preferred Equipment Provider Programs noting, “In March and October of every year, when our members get together, we invite those vendors to attend as well. There are great networking and communication opportunities throughout our three-day program, fostering great relationship building.”

As the pool industry continues to evolve, Master Pools Guild remains committed to cultivating a community of excellence. Whether through the digital realm, industry events, or direct connections with current members, MPG offers a multitude of avenues for aspiring professionals to explore and join this exclusive network. For those with a passion for craftsmanship, innovation, and a commitment to the highest standards in pool construction, Master Pools Guild stands ready to welcome the next generation of builders. The open-door policy and the wealth of knowledge within the existing community ensure that aspiring professionals will find the support and mentorship needed to thrive within the MPG family.

Only Alpha Pool Products Strikes A CHORD WITH TODAY’S BUILDERS

In today’s fast-paced world of pool construction, finding a comprehensive and efficient solution is key for both builders and homeowners who desire a faster turnaround time.

Only Alpha Pool Products, a family-owned and operated business, has emerged as a frontrunner, offering turn-key pool kits that are gaining swift traction among pool builders seeking a high-quality, streamlined, and versatile system.

Who is Only Alpha Pool Products?

Founded in the early 2000s by business partners Tim Saxer and Tom Epple, Only Alpha Pool Products has had a rich history in manufacturing swimming pool components. With a diverse team representing hundreds of years of experience, the company has become a powerhouse in the industry, introducing innovative

products and systems tailored to meet the evolving demands of the market.

One of Only Alpha’s standout offerings is the composite wall system, available in both vinyl liner (Fusion) and linerless (Evolution) configurations.

Evolution which was inspired by materials used in the automotive industry, provides a hardy and temperature-resistant alternative to traditional polymer-based pool systems. This innovative approach has allowed the company to make a splash in the market, starting with the installation of the first Evolution pool in a Pennsylvania hospital back in 2009.

Composite Wall Systems

Tim Saxer, Executive Vice President, explained why their composite wall system has become a mainstay product

for Only Alpha Pool Products.

“The reason why we went to composites rather than polymer, which is what everybody else does, is composites have a much broader temperature range. Heat and cold don’t affect it during the installation or transportation process. It’s a very hardy product that can handle heat well, and really builds like steel on a noncorrosive platform.”

Steel Wall Pool Systems

In addition to composite wall systems, Only Alpha manufactures steel wall pools in various heights, offering a versatile solution suitable for fully buried or semiinground installations. The company also produces fiberglass, acrylic, and thermoplastic steps, bending its own coping and, as of last year, has begun manufacturing vinyl liners for swimming pools.

Builders Gravitating To Only Alpha Evolution

The Evolution, a standout product in Only Alpha’s lineup, has garnered high praise from pool installers, who emphasized its suitability for commercial and higher-end residential projects. Saxer, a seasoned expert with decades of experience in the industry, offered insights into the fast installation time that has become an appealing selling point with pool builders.

“It’s precision made. The product has 10,000th of an inch variation in its dimensions on it. So it’s a very exacting product,” explained Saxer, “internally, we have the ability to manipulate the product. We can cut it, we can glue it together so we can be able to make an interior that’s unique to anything precisely requested by a dealer. we’ve also worked with 3M on various adhesives to help build the pool, to make it a watertight shell without

any coating on it.”

“The wall structure, assembly of the wall structure, or in the case if you look at a concrete pool, would be called a bond beam. The assembly is very quick. We have a special adhesive that you would use between the wall systems to make it watertight, but it builds very quickly,” explained Saxer.

“It’s a prepackaged product, so it comes on pallets. It comes virtually preassembled. Once they pull it off the truck they can go right to work assembling it. Unlike a gunite pool, where you’re playing around with rebar and everything else. With this system, it’s all preset,” said Saxer.

“The concrete bottom has got to be poured correctly,” said Saxer, indicating one of the similarities in respect to traditional gunite pools. “You need to pour it fairly dry so you don’t have shrinkage in it.”

Only Alpha’s pool systems offer a variety of design options, from quick installs suitable for various shapes to replicating specific designs requested by customers. “One interesting project was a fiberglass builder who came to us. The consumer wanted a much larger pool, but they loved the interior design of the fiberglass pool,” explained Saxer, “we were able to replicate that pool on a larger scale for the customer.”

“The customer preferred this over gunite. Gunite is very expensive, and frankly, it’s a project. It’s going to take 30 to 45 days to complete a gunite or shotcrete pool shell. Two installers could assemble the 20 x 40 wall system in our evolution pool in less than 2 hours,” explained Saxer.

The Triple Play To Success SPEED, CERTAINTY, SERVICE

In the competitive world of pool repair, success is not just about fixing leaks or replacing filters—it’s about creating an exceptional customer experience from the very first phone call. This article delves into the winning strategy of being the first to answer the sales call and promptly providing a sales quote, exploring how this dynamic duo not only ensures success but empowers pool companies to charge a premium price. At the heart of our value proposition lie three pillars: speed, certainty, and superior service.

The Need for Speed in Pool Repair

In an era where time is a precious commodity, the power of speed cannot be overstated. When a potential client reaches out

to a pool repair company, they are seeking not just a solution to a problem but a partner who can deliver that solution promptly. Being the first to answer the sales call sets the stage for a relationship built on responsiveness and trust.

Speed is not only about answering quickly but also extends to the entire process—from understanding the client’s needs to providing a detailed sales quote. This efficiency is a key factor in attracting and retaining clients, setting the foundation for a successful pool repair company.

Certainty in Action: The First Quote Advantage

In the pool repair industry, uncertainty can be a major source

of frustration for clients. The quicker a company can alleviate this uncertainty, the stronger the impression of professionalism and reliability. Being the first to provide a sales quote is a crucial step in this direction.

A prompt sales quote not only demonstrates efficiency but also showcases a company’s commitment to understanding the client’s needs. It transforms a vague inquiry into a concrete plan of action, providing clients with a clear roadmap for addressing their pool issues.

In an industry where clients often receive multiple quotes, being the first to present a detailed and transparent quote significantly enhances the company’s competitive edge.

56 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 4, ISSUE 1

Speed and certainty, while crucial, are incomplete without a commitment to superior service. In the pool repair industry, where personalized attention and technical expertise matter, providing an exceptional customer experience is a non-negotiable aspect of success.

Superior service goes beyond just fixing a pool; it involves creating an end-to-end experience that delights clients. This can include proactive communication, transparent processes, and a customer-centric approach that puts the client’s needs at the forefront. When a pool repair company consistently delivers superior service, it not only meets but exceeds client expectations, setting the stage for repeat business and positive word-of-mouth referrals.

The Value of the Triple Play:

Now, how does the triple play of speed, certainty, and superior service translate into the ability to charge a premium price? Let’s dissect each element of our value proposition to understand its impact on the perceived value of pool repair services.

Speed as a Premium Service

Quick Response, be first:

A pool repair company that positions itself as the fastest to respond communicates a sense of urgency and dedication to client needs. This level of responsiveness is a premium service in itself, especially in situations where immediate action is required to prevent further damage.

Quick Turnaround:

Clients are willing to pay a premium for the assurance that their pool issues will be addressed swiftly. By consistently providing quick solutions, a pool repair company positions itself as a valuable partner worth the extra investment.

Certainty as a Premium Offering

Detailed and Transparent Quotes:

Clients often equate certainty with transparency. A pool repair company that offers detailed and transparent quotes promptly communicates a level of professionalism and thorough understanding of the required repairs. Clients are willing to pay more when they have a clear understanding of the scope of work and associated costs.

Reliable Timeframes:

Certainty extends to timelines. A company that can reliably predict and meet deadlines instills confidence in clients. The ability to provide a precise timeline for repairs, coupled with consistent delivery, justifies a premium price for the peace of mind it brings to clients.

Superior Service as a Premium Differentiator

Personalized Attention:

Premium pricing is often associated with a higher level of service. A pool repair company that goes above and beyond to provide personalized attention, such as assigning dedicated account managers or offering customized solutions, positions itself as a premium service provider.

Quality Assurance:

Superior service includes a commitment to quality. Using high-quality materials, employing skilled technicians, and ensuring that repairs are not just functional but durable justifies a premium price. Clients are willing to invest more when they trust that the repairs will stand the test of time.

In the competitive realm of pool repair, being the first to answer the sales call and promptly providing a sales quote is a winning strategy that goes beyond efficiency—it’s a formula for premium success. The triple play of speed, certainty, and superior service positions a pool repair company not just as a service provider but as a trusted partner worth the investment.

Charging a premium price is not just about the tangible repairs; it’s about the intangible value of trust, confidence, and a superior customer experience. Pool repair companies that embrace and excel in the triple play create a narrative of excellence that justifies premium pricing, setting the stage for long-term success and a reputation as a leader in the industry.

Todd Thomas always dreamed of owning his own business. His journey began in the mid-2000s, as he transitioned from a role at his local water district to discovering his passion for pool construction. Todd reminisces, “I fell in love with the construction of swimming pools. I worked three or four years, subcontracting, and kind of learned the ins and outs and decided I’d go get my contractor’s license and start doing it myself.”

Being family-owned and operated, Thomas Pools & Spas takes pride in their hands-on approach. Todd, along with his two daughters who work for the company, ensures a personal touch. “I’m really handson, so I’m out there doing the plumbing, and I’m always with the customer through each individual stage of the job,” says Thomas. This level of involvement is a telling attribute of the firm’s commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.

The company’s unique approach sets it apart; not only does it excel in pool construction, but it also offers ongoing maintenance services. Thomas emphasizes, “We don’t build the pool and leave the customer behind. Once it’s finished our customers have the option to stick with us for however long they choose.” Thomas touts the fact that nearly all of his pool construction

customers have become lifelong service and maintenance clients as well.

Despite a post-pandemic slow down in the pool sector, business is still thriving for the Thomas family. The Modesto Bee recently named Thomas Pools & Spas one of the best pool companies in Modesto. Todd Thomas expressed his excitement, stating, “That was awesome to hear. I think when you make a higher percentage of people happier than other companies, it reflects what you’re doing out there in the market. I’m very pleased they voted for us.”

In a post-COVID environment, financing the dream of pool ownership has become more challenging in Todd Thomas’s market. Todd acknowledges the impact, stating, “It has affected us. It’s slowed things down a little.”

The rise in both pool costs due to inflation and interest rates has prompted a shift in how customers have approached financing their dreams of pool ownership.

Another significant challenge has been the surge in material costs. Todd Thomas shed light on this issue, stating, “Just to give you an example. For one stick of one-inch PVC electrical conduit. We were paying $4 a stick. It’s $12 a stick now for a ten-foot stick.” The substantial increase in prices is not limited to a specific material but spans across various components required for pool construction.

A s Todd discusses the inflationary impact, he notes, “Some things didn’t just double in price. Some things tripled.” This unprecedented rise in material costs has reverberated through the industry, affecting not only the bottom line for companies like Thomas Pools & Spas but also posing challenges for potential pool owners.

The consequences of these increased costs are tangible, influencing the overall price structure of pool construction. Todd reflects on the changes, stating, “Pre-COVID was probably around $32,000 for an entry-level pool. Now they’re probably right in the range of around $42,000 to $45,000. So you’re talking an extra $10,000 that’s just due to inflation.”

Adapting To a Changing Market

The ripple effect of these cost increases extends beyond the balance sheet. As materials become more expensive, customers may need to adjust their expectations or budgets for their dream pools. Despite these challenges, Thomas Pools & Spas remains committed to delivering high-quality projects while working closely with clients to find innovative solutions.

Reflecting on the changing landscape, Todd shares, “With the inflation, obviously the cost has gone up of the pool itself and then also the interest rate. It’s just kind of knocked a lot of people out of the market.” Despite these challenges, Thomas Pools & Spas has witnessed resilience as customers adapt, saving more or financing partially to achieve their goal of pool ownership.

The Mountains ARE CALLING

There’s never been a more exciting time for homeowners when it comes to the possibilities of outdoor living. Our entire marketplace is witnessing a shift, and at the forefront of this evolution are the talented contractors and builders who are leading the way. One could say that these outdoor experts are truly ‘guides’: helping homeowners maximize their spaces with a deeply inspired understanding of their needs and expectations.

Homeowners continue to invest more time and capital into their outdoor spaces than ever before, and they’re putting more thought into how they want their outdoor living spaces to function. Our network of Certified Pros reports that their clients are increasingly interested in a collaborative design process, eagerly bringing their ideas and inspiration to the table.

After going through several design ideas for this project, in close competition with another contractor, Colorado Custom Covers & Decks sealed the deal with a multi-level backyard retreat that checked all of the client’s boxes.

Built in Conifer, Colorado for a family that fosters children with disabilities, it was crucial for this deck to maximize usability in terms of square footage. Consideration of spatial flow was a top priority, and carefully planned stairs were implemented to smooth the connection between the upper and lower levels.

This project by Deckorators

Certified Pro Jonathan Moeller of Colorado Custom Covers & Decks exemplifies the concept of the ‘outdoor room,’ creating an added living space that blends form and function for versatile

use throughout the seasons. By dividing the outdoor space into flexible-use ‘zones,’ homeowners can add value to their homes and ensure their outdoor spaces achieve their full potential.

The remodeled upper deck, sheltered by a skylit roof covering, features an outdoor kitchen and a gas fire pit. Initially, there was no lower-level deck. The homeowners requested inclusion of both a swim spa and a hot tub on the lower level, without obstructing the view. To meet that request, Moeller and his team came up with an innovative design solution: To frame the lower deck flush around both water features, using Deckorators Voyage decking in Khaya. To achieve this, they had to remove an excess of soil from the lot, pour new concrete pads to hold the swim spa and hot tub, and elevate the deck to fit around them.

Local building code required the decking to be fit snug around the lip of the water features, and also required the equipment to be fully accessible for maintenance. Moeller and his team installed removable trap doors to keep the aesthetic clean while allowing mechanical access to the swim spa and hot tub.

“These were great clients. They were really easy to work with, and they ended up loving the space,” says Moeller. “Everything went fairly smooth, aside from just dealing with the winter and the snow in Colorado. Being able to build the deck they really wanted, with a swim spa and a hot tub that the kids can use, was a great joy.”

When it comes to incorporating a deck around pools and spas, material selection is critical. Warranted for installation in the ground or water, Deckorators Voyage line features slip-resistant traction for safety. Powered by Surestone technology, Voyage blends durability with style, eliminating thermal expansion and contraction concerns and providing the industry’s best strengthto-weight ratio. Surestone materials combine distinctly natural wood-grain patterns with rich colors, offering easy personalization and customization. All Deckorators Surestone decking is low-maintenance and backed by a 50-year structural and 25-year stain-and-fade limited warranty.

An additional design highlight on this mountain escape is the cable railing, with x-shapes adorning the spaces between each cedar post. The x-pattern feature is prominent on the stairs inside the house, so the homeowners wanted to reflect that detail in their outdoor space. It was a tricky, meticulous endeavor –string lines and laser levels were crucial – to make sure the railing came out completely straight and level.
