Editor’s LETTER

As we turn the page to 2025 and anticipate another summer, I can’t help but feel a strong sense of optimism about what lies ahead for our industry. The past two years have undoubtedly been a period of recalibration and reflection. Consumer spending took a step back, and the economy worked to stabilize itself in the wake of the pandemic. For many of us, it felt like a test of faith and endurance.

Some may have been reminded of the challenging days of 2008 and 2009, but the good news is that this post-COVID lull has not mirrored the depth of that crisis. Predictions of a steep downturn in the pool and outdoor living sectors didn’t materialize to the extent many feared. While the slowdown was felt, it was far from catastrophic—a testament to the robustness and enduring appeal of our industry.

In 2025, consumer confidence is a mixed bag for pool builders and service pros. On the bright side, more people are working and earning, which could mean more customers ready to invest in pools, upgrades, or maintenance. Lower interest rates also make it easier for homeowners to finance big projects like inground pools or luxury spas. But watch out—rising material costs, rising tariffs, and possible supply chain delays could make projects more expensive and harder to complete on time.

A s we look ahead, we remain cautiously optimistic about what 2025 promises for the pool industry. While challenges persist, consumer spending is expected to increase slightly, sparking renewed interest in pools and outdoor living spaces. For many homeowners, the backyard continues to serve as a cherished retreat—a space to unwind, entertain, and make lasting memories. This presents an excellent opportunity for pool builders and service professionals to adapt, plan ahead, and deliver value through creativity, innovation, and top-notch service.

This year holds plenty of promise and we’re excited to see what 2025 holds in store for us as an industry. On a final note, I sincerely hope you enjoy our spring issue of Pool Magazine. Dive in and discover fresh ideas, expert insights, and inspiration to help you make this upcoming pool season a success.

Increasing Import Tariffs May Soon IMPACT THE POOL INDUSTRY

A wide ranging increase of import tariffs may impact pricing in the industry soon.

With a change in the White House, the word “tariffs” has sparked unsettling questions, particularly about how a rise in the cost of imported goods could impact industries like pool manufacturing and construction. Tariffs—taxes imposed on goods as they enter a country—are designed to incentivize domestic production by making foreign goods more expensive. While this might benefit certain domestic industries, the broader economic implications remain contentious.

President Trump’s proposal to

impose steep tariffs—including a global tariff of up to 20 percent, a 60 percent tariff on imports from China, and up to 100 percent on imports from Mexico—has sparked heated debate. Both economists and voters alike have been divided over whether these tariffs will rejuvenate American manufacturing or burden the economy with higher costs and inefficiencies.

Proponents of Trump’s tariffs argue that the policy addresses the negative effects of globalization on American manufacturing. Since the implementation of NAFTA

in 1994, the number of U.S. manufacturing jobs has declined from nearly 17 million to around 12 million by 2016. Tariffs, they assert, could reverse this trend by incentivizing domestic production and discouraging outsourcing. As Trump stated during his campaign: “Under my plan, American workers will no longer be worried about losing your jobs to foreign nations, instead, foreign nations will be worried about losing their jobs to America.”

Manufacturing plays a pivotal role in driving innovation.

According to the McKinsey Global Institute, the manufacturing sector accounts for a significant portion of private research spending. Proponents argue that when manufacturing shifts overseas, the associated supply chains, engineering expertise, and feedback loops between design and production are also lost, stifling innovation. For instance, Apple’s attempt to manufacture its high-end Mac Pro in Texas faltered due to a lack of sufficient domestic suppliers, such as screw manufacturers.

Manufacturing and other physical economy sectors, including agriculture and resource extraction, contribute disproportionately to economy-wide productivity growth. These sectors anchor local economies and create jobs that personal services cannot replace. By imposing tariffs, proponents believe the U.S. can preserve economic balance and ensure that trade remains mutually beneficial, rather than a one-sided exchange of cheap goods for financial assets.

The primary criticism of tariffs is that they effectively act as a tax on domestic consumers and businesses. For instance, consider an Intex above-ground pool, a popular low-cost option among consumers. A $1,000 pool imported from China would incur an additional $600 charge under a 60 percent tariff. While this cost is initially paid by the importing company, it is typically passed on to consumers in the form of higher retail prices.

While tariffs benefit protected domestic industries by enabling them to charge higher prices, they do so at the expense of consumers. This redistribution of income can lead to inefficiencies, as protected industries are not always low-cost producers. In the long term, tariffs reduce economic output and lower incomes, as Adam Smith and other classical economists have long argued.

High tariffs on imports from countries like China and Mexico could provoke retaliatory measures, leading to trade wars. Such retaliation would hurt U.S. exporters, potentially negating any benefits gained from the tariffs.

Tariffs can contribute to inflation by raising the cost of imported goods. This effect could lead to an economic downturn unless offset by Federal Reserve actions, such as loosening monetary policy. However, such interventions carry their own risks and trade-offs.

President Trump has announced plans to impose tariffs on imports from countries such as China, Mexico, and Canada upon taking office on January 20, 2025. The pool industry relies on various imported materials and components, including pumps, filters, chemicals, and many other components. The imposition of tariffs can lead to increased costs for these imports, which manufacturers and suppliers may pass on to consumers.

Considering these factors, consumers in the pool industry might begin to notice price increases within 3 to 6 months following enforcement of any new tariffs. This timeline accounts for the administrative implementation period, depletion of pre-tariff inventory, and adjustments within the supply chain.

The proposed tariffs aim to address the shortcomings of globalization and revitalize American manufacturing. By incentivizing domestic production and innovation, tariffs could strengthen the U.S. economy in the long term. However, the immediate costs—higher consumer prices, economic inefficiencies, and the risk of retaliation—pose significant challenges.

Navigating California’s 2025 ELECTRICAL REGULATIONS

Swimming pools and spas rely on robust electrical systems to power vital components such as pumps, filters, and lighting. In 2025, California’s electrical requirements for swimming pools continue to evolve, emphasizing safety and efficiency in line with updates to the National Electrical Code (NEC) and statespecific electrical regulations. Below is an overview of the key requirements, recent updates, and anticipated changes in California’s pool safety codes.

Underground Wiring

To minimize risks near water, underground wiring is prohibited directly beneath swimming pools or spas. It must be installed at least 5 feet away from the sidewalls unless specific

protective measures are in place. If underground wiring is needed within this restricted zone, it must be enclosed in a continuous conduit such as Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC), Intermediate Metal Conduit (IMC), or nonmetallic conduit. These conduits require a minimum cover of 6 inches. For non-metallic conduit within 5 feet of the pool, additional encasement in at least 4 inches of concrete is necessary.

Alternatively, direct burial cables may be used if rated for such purposes, requiring 18 inches of cover without concrete encasement. These measures ensure that wiring near pools is adequately protected from accidental damage or exposure to water, reducing risks of electrocution or electrical fires.

Overhead Wiring

Overhead electrical lines near pools present a unique safety hazard. To ensure safety, communication cables must be installed at least 10 feet above the water’s surface or diving platforms. Utility power lines, which carry higher voltages, must have a minimum clearance of 22.5 feet above the pool or the highest diving platform.

These clearance measurements are taken from the maximum potential water level, including any overflow, to provide consistent safety across varying conditions. Proper vertical clearance minimizes the risk of accidental contact with live wires, which could result in serious injuries or fatalities.

Maintenance Disconnects

Maintenance disconnects are critical safety features that allow quick and easy shutoff of power to essential pool equipment, such as pumps and filters, during emergencies or routine servicing. These disconnect switches must be installed in clear sight of the pool or spa to ensure they are easily accessible. However, they should not be placed closer than 5 feet from the water’s edge to avoid accidental operation or exposure to moisture.

In certain cases, jurisdictions may permit shorter distances if the disconnects are housed in lockable or specially enclosed panels. By providing a safe method to disable power, maintenance disconnects reduce the risk of electrical accidents during repairs or servicing.

Electrical Outlets & GFCI

The placement of electrical outlets around pools is carefully regulated to prevent potential hazards. General-use outlets that are not protected by Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) must be positioned at least 20 feet away from pools. In contrast, GFCI-protected outlets can be installed as close as 6 feet to the water’s edge, as they offer additional safety by automatically cutting off power when imbalances are detected.

Outlets specifically designated for pumps and motors must be located between 6 and 10 feet from pool walls, equipped with GFCI protection, and covered with weatherproof locking covers to ensure safety in all conditions. For in-ground pools, at least one GFCI-protected outlet must be installed within 6 to 10 feet of the pool edge to meet compliance standards.

GFCI devices are integral to pool safety, as they prevent electrical shocks by shutting off power when they detect an imbalance. Heading into 2025, GFCI protection is required for all underwater pool lights exceeding 15 volts, electrical outlets within 20 feet of pools or spas, and light fixtures located within 10 feet of the water’s edge unless they are elevated at least 5 feet above the waterline.

Pool cover motors and other electrical equipment, such as pump motors, are also required to have GFCI protection. With advancements in safety standards, California is expanding the application of GFCIs, further enhancing protection for pool users and maintenance personnel.

Self-Contained Spas and Hot Tubs

Spas and hot tubs have unique electrical requirements due to their compact design and proximity to water. Ceiling fixtures above spas must be installed at least 12 feet from the water’s surface. However, fixtures equipped with GFCI protection may be placed as low as 10 feet. Wall switches must remain at least 5 feet away from the spa waterline to prevent accidental contact with water. Electrical outlets serving spas must also adhere to strict guidelines. Outlets within 10 feet of the spa require GFCI protection, while those placed closer than 6 feet must utilize specially approved barriers or enclosures to ensure safety.

California Updates May Soon Hit Home

California’s pool safety regulations have undergone several legislative updates in recent years. SB442, enacted in 2018, requires residential pools to implement safety measures such as fences, alarms, or self-closing gates. These requirements were extended in 2022 to cover all single-family homes, eliminating previous municipal opt-outs.

Additionally, California enforces federal standards for drain covers to prevent entrapment hazards, ensuring that all pools and spas utilize compliant equipment. Looking ahead, California’s Title 24 Building Standards Code is expected to incorporate updates from the 2023 NEC, potentially bringing additional GFCI requirements and energy efficiency measures. Contractors and homeowners should monitor these changes closely, as they may take effect as early as 2025 in some jurisdictions.

While California remains on the 2017 NEC, other states are progressively adopting newer editions of the code. The 2020 NEC has been implemented in states like Texas, Washington, and Colorado, while some jurisdictions still adhere to older versions, such as the 2014 NEC. Arizona, Illinois, and Missouri, which do not mandate statewide NEC adoption, rely on local jurisdictions for electrical standards. As more states transition to the 2023 NEC, pool builders and electricians operating across state lines must stay informed about regional variations to ensure compliance.

Moses Campos, Winner of the 2024 MILLION DOLLAR POOL DESIGN CHALLENGE

In the world of luxury pool design, Moses Campos has emerged as a standout talent, recently securing victory in the prestigious 2024 Million Dollar Pool Challenge recently at the PSP/ Deck Expo in Dallas. As a design consultant in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Campos brings a unique blend of creativity, technical skill, and client-focused design philosophy to every project he tackles. Reflecting on his journey and his winning submission, Campos shared insights into his career, his approach to pool design, and the challenges and opportunities presented by this year’s competition.

Campos’ entry into the pool industry was far from traditional. “I fell into it,” he admitted. “At the

time, I was doing graphic design, web design, and video editing for an ad agency. A friend who worked for a pool builder asked me to help drive a technician around for two weeks. That’s how it all started. Watching and observing, I learned simple things like priming a pump and identifying a Jandy valve. It sparked my love for the industry.”

From those humble beginnings, Campos quickly advanced, transitioning into design work.

“It’s been almost nine years now,” he noted. “I’ve always prioritized learning from others in the industry. Being involved in PHTA shows and earning certifications like my CBP has been pivotal in honing my skills. Now, at Claffey Pools, I’m constantly finding ways to evolve and refine my approach.”

The Million Dollar Pool Design Challenge is widely regarded as a test of both design acumen and problem-solving ability, and this year’s competition was no exception. Contestants were tasked with reimagining a realworld property with unique features and constraints. “This property had significant elevation changes,” Campos recalled.

“Some might see that as a challenge, but I viewed it as an opportunity. There was so much land to work with, but we had clear boundaries that we couldn’t cross. It forced me to think creatively about how to maximize the space while maintaining harmony with the natural surroundings,” said Campos.

A Closer Look at This Year’s Winning Entry

Campos’ winning design captured the judges’ attention with its thoughtful interpretation of the space. “The property had breathtaking views, and I made those the focal point,” he explained. “The upper level became a peaceful retreat, while the lower level offered more dynamic, activity-focused spaces. Each area felt like an extension of the home, blending modern and natural elements seamlessly.”

The pool itself was a centerpiece of the design, offering a multi-tiered experience that reflected the property’s dramatic topography. “The upper pool was designed as a tranquil oasis,” Campos elaborated. “I wanted it to feel like a spa-inspired retreat with clean lines, infinity edges, and a soothing water feature that created a sense of calm. It’s where the homeowners could unwind and take in the panoramic views.”

The lower pool, by contrast, was designed for entertainment and activity. “The lower level was all about fun,” Campos said. “I included a rock climbing wall, a rope swing, and a sunken seating area where you could enjoy the fire feature while still being part of the pool environment. There’s also a large tanning ledge as well as in pool seating areas.”

One of the standout features of Campos’ design was his use of acrylic panels. “Acrylic is a popular feature that is highly requested, but I wanted to use it in a way that felt fresh and purposeful,” he said. “I incorporated two acrylic panels: one by a fire pit in the lower level and another in an intimate seating area on the upper level. Both served to enhance the views while adding a touch of modern elegance.”

Campos’ ability to marry aesthetics with functionality was also evident in his creative solutions for the property’s unique requests, such as a zipline and additional parking spaces. “The zipline wasn’t just about fun; it was about leveraging the land’s natural elevation. I placed it in a way that felt safe and integrated into the landscape. For the parking area, I added water features that combined natural boulders with sleek, modern scuppers. It’s those small touches that elevate the overall design.”

On Competing In And Winning The Competition:

Creating a two-minute video to showcase his design was its own challenge. “It was tough to distill everything into such a short format,” Campos admitted. “But it pushed me to be concise and intentional in highlighting the key elements of my work.”

Reflecting on the competition, Campos expressed admiration for his peers. “Seeing how other designers approached the same space was one of my favorite parts of the challenge,” he said. “The top five designs were incredible. It’s a great lesson in understanding different perspectives and solutions.”

Winning the Million Dollar Pool Challenge is not only a personal milestone for Campos but also an opportunity to inspire and connect with others in the industry. “I’ve already had the chance to meet so many amazing people because of this competition,” he shared. “It’s an honor to be recognized by leaders in our field, and I’m excited to continue building relationships and learning from others.”

As for the future, Campos is looking forward to giving back. “Next year, I’ll be invited back as a judge, and I’m excited to provide constructive feedback to the next round of designers. It’s a great way to encourage growth and innovation in our industry.”

Bringing Luxury Home: SOLANA OUTDOOR LIVING

At the heart of the highend outdoor living design industry lies Ryan Hughes Design Build, a name synonymous with innovation, luxury, and meticulous craftsmanship. At the 2024 International Pool Spa Patio Expo in Dallas, Ryan Hughes and Sozan Hughes discussed a new venture poised to redefine the outdoor living experience: Solana Outdoor Living. This new division brings the Ryan Hughes aesthetic to a broader audience, providing curated products and design expertise in a boutique-style environment.

R yan Hughes Design has long been celebrated for its grand, luxury outdoor living projects, often tailored to the super highnet-worth clientele. However, with success came challenges.

DESIGN

Hughes explains, “A lot of the calls that come into our office, we have to turn them down because they have a quarter-milliondollar budget, even a $500,000 budget, and we were not able to service them with the business model that we’ve created.” Solana emerged as the solution, offering a pathway to extend the Ryan Hughes touch to more homeowners.

“Solana is a product business,” Hughes states, “a showroom model where people can come in and see vignettes of all the outdoor spaces that we create.” This 12,000-squarefoot live showroom in Central Florida showcases a variety of elements—from live walls to outdoor kitchens, planters, and furniture—allowing customers to visualize and select pieces that

align with their preferences and budgets.

Solana’s design philosophy centers around the concept of curation. Ryan and Sozan Hughes have meticulously selected products and materials from across the globe. As Hughes describes, “We travel the world looking for the coolest products, and then we curate them. Not just finding what looks good, but also ensuring it works for specific climates, like Florida’s rain, hurricanes, and humidity.” This attention to detail ensures durability and functionality while maintaining aesthetic appeal.

For clients entering the showroom, the experience is as personal as it is inspiring. Sozan Hughes explains, “When a client comes in, I walk them through

the showroom and see what they’re moving towards. Whether it’s colors, textures, or specific styles, I guide them to pieces that resonate with their tastes.” Once preferences are identified, the process moves into design consultations and, if needed, home visits to ensure harmony with the existing architecture and outdoor spaces.

One of the standout aspects of Solana is its ability to cater to a demographic previously underserved by Ryan Hughes Design Build. By offering individual components of the Hughes aesthetic, clients with modest budgets can still achieve a taste of luxury. Hughes emphasizes, “What they can do is use any pool contractor and then come to Solana to accessorize and outfit the space with all those colors, textures, and features that Ryan Hughes has become synonymous with.”

This accessibility extends beyond residential projects. Solana is also targeting the hospitality industry and even collaborating with other pool builders. “If you’re a pool builder anywhere,” Hughes notes, “we can help you furnish your project. It’s one of the most lucrative parts of the project and

the easiest to execute.”

While Ryan Hughes Design Build remains a boutique brand focused on custom luxury projects, Solana is designed for scalability. Hughes envisions the brand going national and even international. “With Solana, we’re taking the Ryan Hughes look and feel and expanding it,” he says. “It can go nationally, internationally, very easily.” By focusing on products rather than construction, Solana avoids the challenges of differing building codes and permits across regions, making it an adaptable and farreaching business model.

Solana’s launch aligns with Ryan Hughes’ mission to elevate the outdoor living industry. Drawing inspiration from luminaries like Brian Van Bower and Skip Phillips, Hughes aims to integrate landscape architecture and curated outdoor furniture into a holistic experience. “We’ve always had a goal to innovate the industry,” Hughes remarks, “and to elevate that with outdoor furniture, lighting, and features that set a new standard.”

For Sozan Hughes, this approach is deeply client-centric. “It’s about knowing your client and not pushing them,” she explains.

“Understanding their preferences and needs allows us to create spaces that truly reflect their vision.”

Solana also reflects the broader trend of increased investment in outdoor living spaces. As Hughes notes, “When we first got into this industry, less than 10% of a home’s value was spent on outdoor living. Now, we see projects where it’s 50/50. The outdoor space has a greater lifestyle impact than the inside of the home.”

This shift has prompted innovations in lighting, water features, and furniture design. Solana is at the forefront of this evolution, providing clients with a one-stop shop for creating cohesive and luxurious outdoor environments. As Hughes puts it, “Solana is revolutionizing how people purchase their outdoor furniture and accessorize their spaces. It’s about creating an accessory model that’s holistic, where everything works together under one professional design team.”

You Know Those Primitive Pool Videos?

YEAH, THOSE ARE TOTALLY FAKE

We’ve all been there. It’s late at night and you’re scrolling through reels on your phone. Suddenly, you stumble across a video of two shirtless men in the jungle building a swimming pool by hand and are immediately drawn in for the next 15 minutes watching a time-lapse video. The phenomenon of “primitive building” videos on YouTube has captivated millions worldwide. These videos often showcase handcrafted intricate underground swimming pools, villas, and water parks, created with the most base materials in remote jungles.

The allure lies in witnessing the meticulous, labor-intensive processes that culminate in stunning, functional creations. However, the authenticity of these productions has come under great scrutiny, with evidence suggesting that many are staged using modern tools and extensive off-camera

assistance.

The genre of these videos can trace its roots to John Plant, an Australian from Far North Queensland, who launched the YouTube channel “Primitive Technology” in 2015. Plant’s videos feature him, clad simply in blue shorts, demonstrating the creation of survival tools and shelters using materials sourced directly from nature. His authentic, gimmickfree approach resonated with audiences, amassing over 10 million subscribers and nearly a billion views. Plant’s dedication to genuine primitive building techniques set a high standard in the genre.

Inspired by Plant’s early success, numerous imitators emerged, primarily from Southeast Asia, producing content that escalated in extravagance. These channels depict builders constructing opulent resort-style pools, elaborate water features, and

complex water slides, often within 15-minute time-lapsed videos. The thumbnails are often pure clickbait, sometimes employing heavy photo editing to enhance appeal. While the final products appear impressive, the feasibility of the structures themselves as well as the methods used to build them is questionable at best.

To showcase their efforts, they often take a refreshing dip in the completed pool, once its finished. These videos have become so widespread that a friend recently quipped on Facebook, “Why is it taking so long to build my pool with an entire crew when two guys can dig one by hand in the middle of the jungle? I should have just hired them!”

The reality behind these viral “primitive” building videos is much more complex than it appears on screen, and that’s apparently been the intention all along.

Investigations have revealed that many of these productions are not as authentic as they claim, often involving modern tools and sizable teams to achieve the impressive results.

Some videos display sudden transitions from initial digging to fully formed structures without showing the intermediate steps, raising questions about the authenticity of the portrayed processes.

Insiders have disclosed that some productions employ directors, architects, and sizable construction crews. Drone footage from Siem Reap, Cambodia, exposed large teams utilizing modern machinery like excavators and concrete mixers to expedite the building process. An anonymous cameraman revealed that at least a dozen individuals, including specialized builders, participate in these projects.

The complexity and scale of certain projects, such as expansive underground pools with pristine water, seem implausible using only primitive tools and methods, suggesting the involvement of

modern equipment.

YouTube serves as the primary platform facilitating the dissemination of this content, benefiting from advertising revenue generated by high view counts. Social Blade estimates the average yearly earnings for the channel owners to be as high as $809,280. The endeavor appears highly profitable and lucrative. Yet YouTube’s own eligibility guidelines appear to be in question seeing as one of the prerequisites are that content not be deceptive in nature.

Beyond questions of authenticity, these productions can have detrimental environmental impacts. Reports from Cambodia highlight that such projects often leave behind environmental degradation, including deforestation and pollution from abandoned materials. Environmentalists express concern that these activities exacerbate habitat loss and pose risks to local wildlife.

For viewers who were inspired by these videos, it’s essential to understand the realities of pool

construction. Building a pool involves meticulous planning, permitting, excavation, plumbing, and finishing—a process that typically spans several weeks to months, depending on complexity and unforeseen challenges.

Building a semi-functional swimming pool in the middle of the jungle that will only be used as fodder for clicks and views is quite different than building a permanent structure that will not be abandoned after the camera crew leaves. In reality, swimming pools have to be up to code, both from a safety standpoint and a construction standpoint.

In fact, a civil engineer who watched one of their pool construction videos on YouTube said that the ‘earth cement was incredibly fake’ and there are ‘lots of signs of human stupidity’. Further commenting: ‘Even in ancient times, nobody would be so stupid as to make pools without drainage and leave still water, especially in the tropics because of the insects it would generate.’ Ultimately he stressed that the videos were ‘fake, dangerous and misleading’.

Benefits of Education for Pool Pros: CERTIFIED POOL OPERATOR COURSES

During my time as a public pool health inspector in Florida, I checked pool operator certification two times per year. Once, I inspected a public pool that had many violations that resulted in pool closure due to lack of free chlorine and high pH levels. Upon checking the certification of the local pool company technician, it turned out that the technician was not certified. A lack of education for pool pros could have explained the many severe public health and safety violations that I saw. A phone call to the pool company resulted in enrollment of their pool tech in an approved pool operator certification course within 30 days.

This certification is nationally recognized with a standardized curriculum on health and safety that is accepted by

most regulatory authorities. Having this certification allows a pool service technician to clean and service public and private pools. It could help increase the customer base of the pool service company but also the quality of service given. In time, this will help the pool service tech to retain customers through thorough service that results from this training program. Uninformed pool techs can become informed pool techs if they are serious about completing pool industry training. However, it should be noted that this certification is not a state license and does not allow repair of any pool.

First, why would a pool professional get CPO® certified? Most pool pros initially get their certification so they can service and maintain commercial pools. What not that many pool pros realize is just how important

proper training is for continued success. Risk management is one topic not often considered in the pool industry and sometimes the pool pro does it without even knowing that they are. Identification of risks and meeting OSHA standards in the pool industry is not something often followed or discussed. These topics are briefly covered in this course to minimize or eliminate safety hazards in the pool area. Also, recordkeeping is highlighted as one of the most important items for a pool service tech to do after training. Proper recordkeeping helps to legally protect a pool pro by showing that they were not negligent. Do not underestimate the usefulness of a detailed chemical and maintenance log. As in the case with many other industries, if you don’t document it, the inspector won’t believe that you did it!

A pool pro should learn which pool chemicals that they could use as a disinfectant against recreational water illnesses and oxidize other contaminants. This concept is very important to maintain a safe and healthy pool. Disinfectants are the main tool that any pool service tech can utilize to keep algae out of the water and to prevent recreational water illnesses. The CPO® course details all the chemical tools available to the pool professional.

The most important concept taught in the CPO® Course is water balance. This is the one concept that a pool pro should take away from this course. Pool water balance takes all the individual puzzle pieces of total alkalinity, pH, calcium hardness, total dissolved solids (TDS) and temperature and put them together. These water balance parameters are connected to each other to determine if the water is corrosive(hungry) or scaling(overstuffed) water. The ideal result is to have the pool water balanced. The pool pro learns about the consequences of unbalanced water on the pool surface and all other pool system components that the water touches. These consequences can be financially devastating to the pool customers and ultimately lead to loss of customers.

Water balance is a great tool for private pools too. A vast majority of newly constructed private pools are on salt chlorine generators. Pool water imbalance has a negative effect on a salt chlorine generator and its ability to properly generate free chlorine into the water. In turn, this affects how recreational water illnesses are killed and algae is destroyed. Pool water levels are not always going to be properly

balanced, and changes have to be made to correct these imbalances. Pool chemical dosage, or the amount of chemicals to be added to a pool to correct imbalanced pool water levels is heavily covered in this course. Pool pro should leave this course with an improved understanding of what chemicals to use in the proper amount. Improper training can result in chemical overdoses or not adding enough chemicals to correct imbalances. Overdoses can cause harm to pool users, such as burns. The lack of proper education for pool pros can ultimately lead to people being harmed.

Proper water testing procedures are covered in the CPO® Course. Handson pool water testing occurs at many in person CPO courses. Many pool pros are amazed at some of the small mistakes they make on water testing after the completion of the course. The pool pro will even learn about the proper method to store their pool test kit. As an instructor, proper test kit storage is a small topic but one of the biggest mistakes made by pool pros. Typically, they do not realize how improper test kit storage affects obtaining accurate water test results.

Entrapment involves a person getting stuck on a suction outlet, mostly the main drain outlet. Suction entrapment is a very important topic covered in the CPO® Course. It tackles the two main types of pool circulation designs and how they impact entrapment. The course details prevention as the best line of defense. Most pool codes require the use of a main drain cover that meets the Virginia Graham Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act of 2008. Pool pros are taught how important it is for them to do their visual safety inspections of these main drain covers to ensure they are intact and not loose or

missing.

Furthermore, the course also shows that a vacuum line cover is also on direct suction and that those vacuum line safety covers must also be compliant. Children can still get their arms entrapped even if the vacuum pump is inoperable.

Pool pros shall understand what the different parts of a pool system are that control circulation, filtration, chemical treatment and heating. The CPO® course highlights each section of the pool equipment and how it works in the pool. The course details basic maintenance and problems with the equipment that can be handled by a certified pool operator. Remember, any repairs still must be completed by a licensed pool contractor.

Pool pros should be taught about the local public pool rules and how they apply to their facilities. As an inspector, I would inspect public pools and come across so many poorly trained pool pros that did not even know how a public pool was defined or how it was regulated. In these instances, the pools would usually be closed due to lack of proper training on Chapter 64E-9, F.A.C. CPO® Instructors are required to educate on the local regulatory code with their students.

In my experience of conducting pool inspections, I have truly seen the implications from the lack of formal training like the CPO® Course can have on a pool service business. Education is one item that a pool service tech can do for themselves to stay in compliance, but to also to just keep the pool healthy and safe. Many public pool closures can be prevented through proper education.

How One Pool Pro’s Social Media SIDE HUSTLE IS PAYING OFF

Randy Canova, widely recognized as “PoolBoyInThaHouse” on TikTok, is proving that social media can be more than just a pastime—it can become a lucrative side hustle. As a pool repair technician with over 15 years of experience, Canova has built a significant online presence by sharing videos of his day-to-day tasks, from servicing equipment to tackling pool renovations. With nearly 480,000 followers, 8.5 million likes, and a staggering 80 million total views, Canova’s TikTok account has become a must-follow for both pool professionals and enthusiasts.

“I started creating videos just to keep myself entertained while working,” Canova shared in a recent interview. “It wasn’t something I planned, but people loved it, so I kept posting. Now, it’s like an archive of my work and

a way to connect with others in the industry.”

Randy’s journey into the pool industry began humbly. “I started as a helper, carrying tools for a man named Guy, doing commercial pool renovations,” he said. Over the years, he honed his skills, transitioning from cleaning pools to specializing in equipment installations and renovations. Today, he focuses entirely on commercial work.

Despite his busy schedule, Canova uses downtime between jobs to capture content. Armed with just his iPhone, he films snippets of his workday and edits them into engaging videos. His creativity shines in his “challenge videos,” like seeing how many chlorine tablets he can carry—a clip that earned him over half a million views.

Canova attributes his success

on TikTok to consistency and understanding the platform’s quirks. “The first three seconds are critical,” he explained. “You have to grab people’s attention immediately. TikTok rewards consistent posting, but they’re also particular about the sounds you use. If it’s copyrighted, your video won’t get pushed.”

Interestingly, TikTok’s algorithm can be a double-edged sword. “Shadowbanning is real,” Canova said. “If you stop posting regularly, TikTok starts throttling your content. It’s frustrating, but I don’t let it get to me because creating videos is more of a hobby than a job.

Finding success on TikTok is something many folks struggle with. A fact that isn’t lost on Canova, who has been approached by numerous pool professionals looking for tips on how to enhance their social

media presence. After all, one of his videos has been watched over 44 million times and has over 100 years of watch time on it.

During our conversation, Randy shared his top tips for fellow pool professionals looking to make a splash on social media:

Be Consistent

Consistency is key to building and maintaining an audience on TikTok. Canova emphasizes that regularly posting keeps your account active in TikTok’s algorithm, increasing the chances of your videos being seen by more viewers. “TikTok rewards you for consistency,” he explains. “Even if you don’t have time to make a long or elaborate video, posting short updates or behind-the-scenes clips can help keep your account active and your followers engaged.” Planning a content calendar or setting aside time each week to batch-create videos can help you stay consistent without feeling overwhelmed.

Grab Attention Fast

The first three seconds of your video are critical—this is the make-or-break moment where viewers decide whether to keep

watching or scroll away. “You need to hook people immediately,” Canova advises. Start your video with something visually striking, a compelling question, or an intriguing action that will make viewers want to stick around. For example, Canova’s popular challenge videos catch attention right away because viewers are curious to see how far he can go. Remember, every second counts on TikTok, so jump straight into the action to capture interest.

Educate or Entertain

Content that either teaches or entertains is what drives engagement on TikTok. Canova has found success by striking a balance between the two, sharing videos that are both informative and fun. “People watch my videos because they either want to learn something new about pool maintenance or because they enjoy seeing the unique way I do things,” he explains. Think about what your audience wants—are they looking for quick tutorials, satisfying transformations, or humorous moments? Tailor your content to meet those needs, and you’ll start to build a loyal following.

Focus Your Content

One of the most important aspects of growing your TikTok audience is finding your niche and sticking to it. “TikTok works like a TV channel,” Canova explains. “People want to tune in and see the same type of content every time.” For pool professionals, this might mean focusing on equipment tutorials, repair hacks, or creative ways to showcase your work. Consistency in your niche helps you build a recognizable brand and keeps your followers coming back for more. Avoid mixing unrelated topics, like hiking or car repairs, into your poolfocused channel, as this can confuse your audience and dilute your reach.

For Canova, the real reward is the connections he’s made. His visibility on social media platforms has made him approachable, and as a result, has grown his professional network exponentially. “The friends I’ve made in the industry are incredible,” he said. “We help each other out, share advice, and just want to be better at what we do. The networking is priceless.”

How One Pool Company Is Using Its Field Service Management System To

SERVICE REGIONALLY & SELL NATIONALLY

Small businesses are an engine of growth in the U.S.: accounting for 99.9% of all companies, delivering 46% of the nation’s GDP, and employing 45.9% of all Americans in the workforce. While service-oriented small businesses often begin by selling to a local client base, they typically must transform processes to expand. SaaS-based field service management (FSM) platforms with automated processes help small businesses scale efficiently to serve a regional customer base while maintaining service quality with a personal touch. And if service companies branch out into offering products, they can also use these same tools to streamline customer interactions, ship products, and compete against a wider range of companies.

Increasing Operational Efficiency

with Zuper’s FSM Platform

Cowboy Pools is an Austin, TXbased company owned and operated by Aaron Weiss and Amanda Shaftel. The company has developed a popular smaller-scale, above-ground preassembled stock tank pool, The Honcho, that can be quickly and cost-effectively installed in most backyards.

With business booming, Weiss and Shaftel went looking for a solution to optimize operations and workflows further. The company was using a legacy solution with disconnected processes, increasing staff work strain and delaying job completion. It typically took Cowboy Pools one hour to schedule a pool install in their Austin and Houston markets as staff navigated disjointed processes, email, and other tools.

Cowboy Pools’ owners wanted to use automation to increase staff productivity and improve the customer experience. This

was the start of our partnership with Cowboy Pools. With Zuper, they easily automated and linked customer service, field service teams, and back-office staff to work productively to complete jobs end-to-end. For Cowboy Pools, three process changes were key to the company’s rapid growth over the last 12 months.

Automated Scheduling & Dispatching

The Cowboy Pools team uses Zuper’s integrated calendar and automated scheduling and dispatching functionality to plan site visits, installations, and repairs. These tools give Cowboy Pools a top-down view of business activities and staff to maximize field service efficiency. “We can now do all scheduling and dispatching within Zuper, which wasn’t possible with our previous tool. As a result, we have become more organized and responsive to

customer needs,” says Aaron Weiss, Co-founder of Cowboy Pools.

With automated scheduling and dispatching, the company has decreased the timeframe to order and install a pool regionally by 80%. Not only is manual back office schedule management streamlined, but technician utilization is improved because the technology ensures staff are allocated to the job best fit for their skills and schedule. In addition, increasing responsiveness has strengthened customer relationships. The company’s net promoter score (NPS) has increased.

Since today’s customers expect a heavily automated experience, automating scheduling and accelerating job completion time can help small businesses start relationships on the right foot, leading to great online reviews, higher NPS scores, and more new business due to social proof.

Using a Mobile App:

At Cowboy Pools, each field service technician completes 2-7 daily jobs. As a result, staff must be able to work efficiently across locations and in different conditions.

“Our field services team uses the mobile app to see all of their jobs at a glance, including the data and tools they need to complete jobs effectively and efficiently,” says Weiss. Tools such as asset management and service checklists help keep staff focused on completing their day’s jobs and ensuring that every customer receives the same high standard quality of care.

Zuper provides job management tools that techs can access and use, even when cell service isn’t available, keeping them productive

and able to complete jobs more easily. With mobile, all job details exist in one place. For Cowboy Pools, this ensures customer satisfaction is maintained because every technician has access to the history of the account and previous service and can share before and after pictures directly with the customer. The mobile app ensures regular communication with the customer enhancing the overall experience.

Field technicians want to use apps that offer guided workflow, so they don’t have to carry physical paperwork or navigate broken processes. Small businesses that move from paper-based processes to automated job management can typically achieve productivity gains of 20-30% on average. Pairing automation with training and upskilling can also help improve technician retention.

“We view our FSM tool as key to keeping our field teams happy. These employees are in high demand in our regional market and finding ways to make their jobs easier is important for morale.” In the last several months, Cowboy Pools has improved field staff retention by 30%.

Sending Automated Invoices and Payment Reminders:

Invoice automation simplifies the billing process significantly for Cowboy Pools by calendar customization reducing manual work for back-office staff, eliminating errors and automating payment reminders. As a result, they can focus on proactive customer outreach to earn business and reduce day sales outstanding (DSO), improving the organization’s capital position. Back-office teams that automate formerly disconnected invoicing

and payment processes can expect to reduce DSO and focus teams on customer communications and exception management. That means better working capital and less bad debt.

Galvanizing Growth with Streamlined Processes

Cowboy Pools is now selling its standardized product, The Honcho, nationwide. By automating backoffice processes and improving daily technician efficiency, the company has been able to expand its offering beyond the Houston and Austin regions.

Other pool or service-based companies can learn from Cowboy Pools’ success and embrace fullservice field management software to streamline workflows, accelerate job completion, and ensure timely invoicing and payment. With these capabilities, they can enter new geographic markets, compete with a broader range of businesses, and deliver exceptional service that wins new customers and delights existing ones. And by managing growth efficiently, they’ll also notch greater profitability.

What If We Built a Pool On The Moon,

HOW WOULD WE EVEN DO IT?

Splashing in water is a simple joy we take for granted on Earth, but what if we could experience it on the Moon? Imagine the surreal combination of weightlessness, lunar gravity, and shimmering waves beneath a domed sky. The idea, inspired by Randall Munroe’s What If? series and its episode “What if we put a pool on the Moon?”, takes a playful look at how swimming might work in an environment so unlike our own.

First, the good news: yes, you could swim on the Moon. The fundamental physics of buoyancy still apply. Buoyancy, the upward force exerted by a fluid on an object submerged in it, depends on the density of the fluid relative to the object. On Earth or the Moon, as long as you’re less dense than water (and humans are), you’ll float just fine.

In fact, swimming would feel surprisingly familiar. According to experts, the inertia of water

is the main source of drag when swimming, and this property isn’t influenced by the Moon’s weaker gravity. However, the reduced gravity would create some truly unique phenomena. The lower gravitational pull (just one-sixth of Earth’s) would lead to sloshier pools, bigger waves, and the ability to leap gracefully out of the water, almost like a dolphin.

One of the most exciting aspects of a lunar pool is the enhanced physics of movement. Studies suggest that in low gravity, humans might even be able to run on water, given the right conditions. Normally, running on water is a feat reserved for small creatures like water striders or the basilisk lizard. Humans, with our greater mass and muscle limitations, simply lack the power to achieve the necessary speed on Earth.

However, researchers found that on the Moon, the reduced gravity could allow humans under 73

kilograms (160 pounds) to run on water by slapping the surface hard enough to generate lift. With some clever engineering, like special flotation devices or fins, larger individuals might also achieve this feat. Who wouldn’t want to say, “Look at me, Ma, I’m moonwalking on water”?

Here’s where the Moon pool dream takes a financial hit. A typical pool holds about 40,000 gallons, or approximately 334,000 pounds of water. Transporting materials to the Moon is astronomically expensive—around $100,000 per pound. That means just filling the pool alone could cost a mindbending $33.4 billion, never mind the cost of materials to build it. To put that price tag in perspective, we’re talking about 7.92% of Elon Musk’s entire net worth spent just to get enough water there to fill it.

Building a swimming pool on the Moon would be a fascinating but highly complex endeavor, fraught with unique logistical challenges.

One of the most immediate concerns would be creating a sealed and pressurized environment to counter the Moon’s vacuum. Without an atmosphere, water would rapidly evaporate or freeze, depending on the temperature. This would necessitate constructing an enclosure with controlled air pressure, temperature, and humidity levels to keep the water in a liquid state.

The Moon’s lower gravity, about one-sixth that of Earth, would also present challenges. The reduced gravitational pull would affect the way water behaves, causing it to splash and ripple differently. This could require innovative designs for pool containment and water circulation systems to maintain a stable and functional pool environment. Safety considerations would be paramount, as the altered

dynamics of water could pose risks to swimmers unaccustomed to such conditions.

To create a more Earth-like swimming experience, artificial gravity could be introduced through a rotating habitat. A centrifuge system could simulate gravity by spinning a section of the dome. This innovation would allow swimmers to experience more familiar water behavior, while also addressing health concerns for long-term lunar residents.

Moreover, the materials for constructing the pool must withstand the harsh lunar conditions, including extreme temperature fluctuations and high radiation levels. This would likely involve using advanced materials capable of insulating the pool and shielding it from radiation while maintaining structural integrity.

Finally, maintaining a swimming pool on the Moon would require continuous energy to power lifesupport systems, water filtration, and temperature regulation. Solar power could be a viable solution, but it would need to be stored efficiently for the lunar night, which lasts about 14 Earth days.

Building a pool on the Moon isn’t just a whimsical idea—it’s a fascinating thought experiment that challenges our engineering limits. So while the Apollo missions were all about planting flags, perhaps future Moon explorers will focus on perfecting their high dives and dolphin leaps. The day that happens will surely be one small splash for man but one giant cannonball for mankind.

Inside FSPA: New Initiatives Transforming FLORIDA’S POOL INDUSTRY

The Florida Swimming Pool Association (FSPA) has been at the forefront of advancing the pool industry in Florida, championing innovation, advocacy, and community support. Under the leadership of CEO Elizabeth McMurray, FSPA has implemented a host of exciting changes and initiatives that aim to benefit both industry professionals and consumers. Here, we delve into some of the key developments shaping the FSPA’s impact.

A New Digital Identity

The recent redesign of FSPA’s website marks a significant milestone for the organization. Elizabeth McMurray expressed her enthusiasm about the transformation: “We are in love with our new brand and website!” The overhaul coincided with a broader brand refresh, ensuring cohesiveness

across all platforms. McMurray explained, “We wanted to make it really clear where the consumer resources are and provide value to our members by enhancing ease of use of the member ‘Find a Pool Pro’ search engine.”

In addition to streamlining navigation, the redesigned site now features standout pages for education, government relations, and the Florida Swims Foundation. One of the most innovative additions is the Florida Job Pool, a first-of-itskind industry-specific job engine in Florida. McMurray highlighted its significance: “It’s free for our members to use to post their positions, focusing on workforce development in the industry.” Non-members can also participate for a fee, broadening its reach and impact.

Although the Florida Job Pool is still in its early stages,

its potential to transform employment in the pool industry is evident. McMurray detailed that the FSPA’s new platform is still being built out and filled with job listings. However, she revealed plans for a marketing campaign to promote the initiative, emphasizing its dual mission of creating value for members and fostering workforce development.

The Pool Industry Political Action Committee (PIPAC) serves as the legislative arm of the FSPA, working tirelessly to advocate for industry-friendly policies. McMurray explained its role: “This entity helps us to support industry-friendly candidates in Tallahassee that are advancing the industry forward.” By aligning with supportive legislators, PIPAC ensures that the needs and concerns of the pool industry remain front and center in state policy discussions.

Supporting Members

FSPA’s commitment to its members extends beyond advocacy. Through the Florida Swims Foundation, the organization established a Hurricane Relief Fund following Hurricane Ian in 2022. This fund provides forgivable grants ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 to member businesses affected by hurricanes. “Our grants can pay for things like insurance deductibles, lost equipment, or payroll expenses for lost work time,” said McMurray. This initiative underscores FSPA’s dedication to supporting its community during challenging times.

The FSPA’s proactive approach to the Florida Building Code (FBC) updates reflects its commitment to industry standards. McMurray outlined the comprehensive process: “In 2024, we did an all-call

to membership at large to submit their concerns and proposals.”

The Building Code Task Force, composed of engineers, builders, and other industry experts, has been diligently working on 12 residential and 9 commercial proposals to submit to the state. This collaborative effort ensures that FSPA members have a voice in shaping the industry’s future.

Everything Under The Sun

The Everything Under the Sun Expo has long been a cornerstone of FSPA’s calendar. McMurray proudly stated, “We are one of the largest industry trade shows in the country, definitely the largest in the southeast United States.”

With over 50 years of history, the Expo offers dynamic educational opportunities and an impressive array of exhibitors. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance

SMART MONITORING, PERFECT BALANCE.

to take advantage of pricing discounts and ensure access to preferred courses. McMurray added, “This year, we will have a ton of onsite self-check-in stations, making the process faster and easier than ever.”

FSPA’s recognition programs, including the Design Awards, Tops in Trucks, and Service Professional of the Year, highlight the exceptional contributions of its members. “These businesses and individuals work year-round to bring an incredible product and lifestyle to their customers,” said McMurray. By acknowledging these achievements, FSPA fosters a sense of pride and camaraderie within the industry. “It’s a true celebration of great people doing great work.”

Top Outdoor Living Trends for 2025 EXPERT INSIGHTS

As outdoor living spaces evolve, the focus is shifting toward creating multifunctional environments that maximize comfort, functionality, and style. Joe Raboine, Vice President of Design at Oldcastle APG, recently shared his insights on emerging outdoor living trends for 2025. From microspaces to sustainable materials and seamless indoor-outdoor transitions, Raboine highlighted how consumer preferences are redefining the modern backyard.

With backyards shrinking over the past few decades, homeowners are getting creative with smaller outdoor areas.

“The average lot size has been halved in many communities,” said Raboine. “However, these smaller spaces can still offer incredible functionality and aesthetic appeal.”

Raboine emphasized the concept of “microspaces,” a term used to describe

small yet functional outdoor areas. These spaces can include everything from cozy seating arrangements to plunge pools and vertical gardens. “It’s all about changing the perception. A 20x50-foot yard may not seem large, but when approached as an extension of indoor living, it becomes an opportunity to create something extraordinary,” he said.

One of the most prominent trends for 2025 is biophilic design—a concept that emphasizes harmony with

nature. “The pandemic reminded people of how essential outdoor spaces are for their mental and physical well-being,” said Raboine. “We’re seeing more homeowners incorporate natural elements like plantings, water features, and natural textures.”

Homeowners are increasingly prioritizing eco-friendly options in their outdoor spaces. “Sustainability is no longer a niche preference—it’s mainstream,” Raboine said. “Millennials and Gen Z, in particular, are driving

demand for recycled materials, permeable pavers, and native landscaping.”

Additionally, vertical gardens and built-in planters with raised beds for native plants are becoming staples in urban settings where space is limited. “These features not only support biodiversity but also create vibrant, lush environments,” said Raboine.

Color is playing a more significant role in outdoor design than ever before. “It’s not just an afterthought anymore,” Raboine said. “Color is often the first thing homeowners consider because it sets the tone for the entire space.”

According to Raboine, bold and tranquil colors are trending in tandem. “We’re seeing people experiment with striking hues for focal points while using calming tones for the surrounding areas,” he explained. This interplay between bold and serene creates visually dynamic spaces that still feel cohesive.

The trend of mixing materials is redefining outdoor aesthetics. “Consumers are no longer sticking to one material for their entire backyard,” said Raboine. “They’re blending pavers with composite decking, faux turf, decorative stone, and even porcelain to create unique, layered designs.”

These combinations not only draw the eye but also enhance functionality. For example, porcelain pavers paired with concrete can create seamless transitions from patios to pool decks. “Mixed materials allow homeowners to personalize their space and achieve a look that’s both modern and timeless,” Raboine added.

As the concept of wellness continues to influence design, more homeowners are transforming their backyards into personal retreats. “People want their outdoor spaces to be sanctuaries where they can relax, recharge, and connect with nature,” said Raboine.

Popular features include meditation areas, yoga spaces, outdoor spas, fire features, and water elements.

“It’s all about creating a multisensory experience,” Raboine explained. “Soft lighting, soothing sounds from water features, and the warmth of a fire can completely change how a space feels.”

Designers are focusing on creating seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. “Gone are the days of a single sliding door leading to the backyard,” Raboine said. “Now, we’re seeing folding glass walls, zero-edge transitions, and other innovations that blur the line between indoor and outdoor living.”

Raboine also highlighted the importance of aligning outdoor features with indoor ones. “Think about how a fireplace outside can mirror one inside, or how a bar counter can extend through a window to connect the kitchen with the patio,” he said.

Finally, making outdoor spaces usable year-round is a priority for many homeowners. “Features like pergolas, pavilions, and infrared heaters

are enabling people to enjoy their outdoor spaces regardless of the season,” said Raboine. “Even in colder climates, thoughtful design can make these areas comfortable and inviting.”

Heating elements, weatherresistant materials, and adaptable enclosures are just a few solutions that allow for year-round use. “It’s about creating spaces that adapt to the changing seasons while maintaining their aesthetic and functionality,” Raboine explained.

The trends shaping outdoor living in 2025 are redefining how homeowners use their spaces. By prioritizing multifunctionality, sustainability, and wellness, these designs are not just about aesthetics—they’re about improving quality of life. “Outdoor living is no longer an afterthought,” Raboine concluded. “It’s an integral part of how we live, and the innovations we’re seeing today are only the beginning.”

New Year, New Look: POOL TILE TRENDS FOR 2025

Selecting the right material is key to both the visual appeal and durability of your pool. Porcelain pool tile is highly resistant to wear, chemicals, and fading, making them a practical and long-lasting choice. When choosing your pool tile, consider factors such as your pool coping and deck, as these elements play a role in both aesthetics and functionality. The right material not only enhances your pool’s beauty and longevity but also simplifies maintenance, ensuring your pool stays pristine for years to come.

The Power of Color

Color significantly influences your pool area’s mood. This year’s trends showcase various shades of blue and lighter brighter tones like whites and greys.

The Flax Cubes Glass Tile

Measuring just 7/8” x 7/8”, the Flax Cubes Glass Tile is a versatile small-format option ideal for nearly any application. In pools, its compact size is perfect for fitting around tight corners, while its translucent quality captures and reflects light, creating an open feel that enhances the sense of space.

Create a Seamless Look With Pool Coping

Pool coping adds a finishing touch and protects the pool’s edge. When we look into pool tile trends for 2025, taking into account your pool coping and patio paver options is an important consideration. It can affect the overall aesthetic of the area and influence what tile choices you’d like to make. Many homeowners are choosing porcelain patio pavers and matching pool coping to create a seamless, modern aesthetic around their pools. With a wide variety of options available, you can easily find a style that complements your design. Plus, porcelain offers the added benefits of minimal maintenance and exceptional durability, ensuring your outdoor space stays beautiful for years to come.

Popular Tile Shapes And Sizes

From classic squares to detailed mosaics, the shape and size of your tiles play a key role in enhancing your pool’s design. Large format field tiles offer a sleek, contemporary feel. Smaller mosaic pool tiles give your pool more design flexibility. These tiles add depth and dimension. Playing with tile shapes adds character. Choose subway pool tile for a timeless, classic feel, or opt for geometric patterns to achieve a more contemporary, sophisticated look. The possibilities are endless!

Tips For a Flawless Installation

Waterproofing materials, like the Basecrete waterproofing membrane, are essential to ensure the durability of your pool. These materials protect your investment, especially with allglass tile projects, by preventing issues like efflorescence and leaks. Choosing the right adhesive and grout is also crucial. Litoelastic EVO provides a strong, flexible blond ideal for glass tiles, while epoxy grouts from the Starlike EVO collection offer a waterproof, low-maintenance solution. With a wide range of colors, you’ll easily find the perfect match for your pool design.

Pool Protection Technologies Has Fresh TAKE ON ALGAE CONTROL

Pool Protection Technologies, a dynamic startup based in Athens, Georgia, is making waves in the pool industry with its innovative approach to algae prevention. Co-founded by Garrett Stigall, a former pool maintenance professional turned engineer, the company has introduced the Sound Amplifying Machine— better known as S.A.M. This new pool maintenance device leverages sound technology to tackle a persistent problem in the pool industry: algae growth.

Garrett Stigall’s journey into the pool industry began early. “Ever since I was 11, I was cleaning pools in my neighborhood,” Stigall shared. His hands-on experience continued through high school, fostering a deep understanding of pool maintenance and its

challenges. After pursuing a civil engineering degree in college, Stigall felt a pull back to his roots. “I realized I could use my engineering expertise to help the pool industry in ways that hadn’t been seen before.”

This vision led to the creation of Pool Protection Technologies. Recognizing a lack of innovation in the pool space, Stigall and co-founder Guy Gober sought to develop solutions that prioritized sustainability and cost-effectiveness. Their mission culminated in the development of S.A.M., an award-winning device designed to reduce chemical dependency in pools.

What is S.A.M.?

S.A.M. is a compact, basketballsized device that employs

ultrasonic sound waves to prevent algae growth in pools. While sound-based technology has been used in large-scale water reservoirs to manage algae and biofilm, Stigall and his team adapted the concept for residential and commercial pools. “If it can be done in a huge body of water, why can’t it be done in a small body of water like a pool?” Stigall questioned.

Reservoirs and lakes have utilized sound wave technology for years to combat algae and biofilm buildup, often employing massive equipment. Stigall’s team recognized the potential to miniaturize this technologs. “The systems used in reservoirs are massive,” Stigall explained. “We had to condense that into something compact and practical for backyard pools.”

After years of research and development, the team engineered a device that effectively reduces algae growth without relying on chemicals. The product’s small size and solar-powered design make it both efficient and sustainable.

How Does S.A.M. Work?

S.A.M. operates using ultrasonic sound waves that target algae at a cellular level. “We send out sound waves that match the cell size of the algae we’re targeting,” Stigall explained. Algae cells exposed to these sound waves cannot reproduce, leading to their eventual demise. The device emits a variety of sound wave frequencies to address the thousands of algae species found in pools.

By preventing algae growth, S.A.M. significantly reduces the demand for chlorine and other chemicals.

“Most of our pool owners have gone from adding chlorine two to three times a week to just once every other week,” Stigall noted. This reduction not only saves money but also extends the lifespan of pool equipment and liners.

Since its rollout in 2023, S.A.M. has demonstrated impressive results. According to data collected from pool owners in Georgia, the device reduces chemical usage by 30 to 70%, saving pool owners up to $1,300 annually. “As chlorine prices continue to rise, these savings become even more significant,” Stigall emphasized.

The innovative design and effectiveness of S.A.M. have not gone unnoticed. Pool Protection Technologies earned the Audience Choice Award and the Grand Prize at the Columbus Biz Pitch competition, as well as the

$10,000 Grand Prize winner of the University of Georgia’s FABricate Entrepreneurial Initiative. “These accolades validate our efforts and inspire us to keep improving,” said Stigall. Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its reach within the pool industry. “In 2025, we’ll be attending industry-specific trade shows to introduce S.A.M. to a wider audience,” Stigall revealed.

While it’s too early to declare S.A.M. a game-changer, it is certainly on our list of new products to watch. The approach taken by Pool Protection Technologies is encouraging, showing how startups can bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to longstanding challenges in pool maintenance.

This new line of high-performance, PVC reinforced membranes is specifically designed to meet the rigorous demands of pools with heavy use and exposure to challenging conditions. Inspired by the power and resilience of “Colossus,” KOLOS sets a new standard in durability and performance for both commercial and high-traffic residential pools.

A s pool builders and homeowners continue to seek solutions that stand the test of time, KOLOS emerges as a game-changer. With its robust design and cuttingedge technology, KOLOS offers

an unmatched combination of strength, resistance, and sustainability. This collection is poised to reshape the way we think about pool membrane solutions, providing long-lasting protection for a variety of aquatic needs.

At the core of the KOLOS collection is its extraordinary durability. Designed to withstand heavy use, KOLOS is the ultimate solution for pools that are exposed to constant foot traffic, harsh chemicals, and abrasive substances. Whether used in commercial aquatic centers, public swimming pools, or high-end resort pools, KOLOS offers unmatched protection against the toughest conditions. One of the standout features of KOLOS is its ability to endure extreme exposure to chlorine, saltwater, and other harsh

chemicals commonly found in pools. Chlorine, while essential for pool sanitation, can degrade materials over time, causing them to lose their structural integrity. KOLOS, however, is engineered with reinforced PVC that ensures long-lasting resistance to these chemicals, preserving both the membrane’s strength and appearance.

In addition to its chemical resistance, KOLOS boasts exceptional resistance to abrasions and scratches. Pools that see heavy use are often subject to wear and tear from swimmers, pool equipment, and maintenance activities. KOLOS has been meticulously designed to stand up to such forces, making it an ideal choice for facilities that experience constant movement and activity in the water.

KOLOS incorporates 40% recycled materials in its construction. This reduces the environmental footprint of the product. It’s also been certified by RecyClass, a leading certification program for the recycling and sustainability of plastics. This certification guarantees that KOLOS meets the highest sustainability standards.

One of the most reassuring aspects of the KOLOS collection is the comprehensive warranty that accompanies it. RENOLIT offers a 20-year waterproofing guarantee on all KOLOS membranes, it’s also backed by a 5-year warranty against staining. These warranties are a clear indication of the high level of confidence RENOLIT has in the performance and longevity of KOLOS. Pool owners can rest assured that they are making a smart investment in a product that will deliver outstanding results for many years.

The KOLOS collection is available in two sophisticated colors—Zephir (white) and Delos (blue)—to suit a wide variety of pool designs and aesthetics. These colors have been carefully selected to complement both modern and traditional pool styles, offering versatility and elegance for any aquatic environment.

Zephir, the pristine white option, evokes a sense of cleanliness, lightness, and modernity. It is ideal for creating a fresh and contemporary look, while also reflecting sunlight to create a sparkling pool surface. On the other hand, Delos, the deep blue option, provides a classic and serene aesthetic that is reminiscent of the clear waters of the Mediterranean.

These color options allow pool operators to not only benefit from the performance of KOLOS but also to enhance the visual appeal of their pools. Whether for a public aquatic center, a luxury hotel pool, or a private residential swimming pool, KOLOS offers the perfect solution for those who seek both style and substance.

KOLOS is an ideal solution for commercial aquatic facilities such as hotels, gyms, water parks, and public swimming pools. These facilities require materials that can withstand the constant wear and tear caused by daily use, while also maintaining high aesthetic standards. KOLOS meets these demands with ease, offering a robust and stylish membrane that can handle heavy foot traffic, chemical exposure, and other challenges unique to commercial pools.

Easier Exotic Edge Pools With GREAT AMERICAN WATERFALL

Great American Waterfall has been a cornerstone of innovation in the pool industry since it was first founded in 2003. With a product lineup that ranges from cutting-edge zero edge systems to sophisticated spouts and rain curtains, the company has redefined water features for residential and commercial pools. Now under the leadership of Aaron Dixon, son of the late founder Ben Dixon, Great American Waterfall continues to push the boundaries of design and functionality.

Zero Edge Pools

Among the most innovative products offered by Great American Waterfall is the Zero Edge system. This advanced solution eliminates the need for stainless steel plates and complex coping, which are commonly associated with Lautner Edge designs. “Our Zero Edge system

is a game-changer,” said Lee Russell, Director of Sales. “Builders no longer have to worry about bonding, grounding, or the potential for rust.” Made from chemically inert, fiberglassreinforced concrete, the Zero Edge system offers both durability and cost savings.

Russell explained that builders can save between 20% and 30% compared to traditional methods. “What truly sets this system apart is the time and stress it saves. Builders can execute exotic edge projects with greater confidence and efficiency, knowing the system is designed to simplify even the most complex installations.”

Turf Edge Pools

The Turf Edge system is another standout product that reflects the company’s commitment to innovative solutions. This system allows artificial turf to meet the

waterline seamlessly, offering a clean, modern aesthetic. “Natural grass near pools is a maintenance nightmare,” Russell noted. “With Turf Edge, we provide a durable, non-metal solution that not only looks great but is built to last.”

By eliminating the use of metal, the Turf Edge system ensures there are no risks of overheating or rust. The fiberglass-reinforced concrete plates are strong enough to withstand foot traffic, making them both practical and visually appealing. “This product is becoming increasingly popular among homeowners,” Russell added.

Water Feature Products

Great American Waterfall’s signature sheer technology forms the foundation of its Aqua Sheer water features, designed to manipulate water flow into visually stunning effects.

“Our baffling system is unique because it’s the least restrictive on the market,” Russell explained. “This ensures that debris doesn’t get trapped inside, reducing maintenance and improving longevity.” The Aqua Sheer creates a classic waterfall effect. Designers and builders can elevate their projects by incorporating custom sizes and shapes. Creating a design that integrates multiple fixtures in a single space transforms any outdoor area into a tranquil sanctuary.

Spout Line

The Aqua Spout and Spout Pro exemplify the company’s dedication to functional innovation. Designed to move water from raised features into basins, these spouts have evolved over the years to include advanced baffling systems.

“The Spout Pros eliminate the need for individual ball valves,”

said Russell. “They self-baffle and regulate flow, which not only saves time during installation but also ensures consistent performance.” The Spout Pro Plus takes this concept even further by integrating multiple spouts into a single unit, perfect for creating dramatic water walls in resort-style designs.

Rain Curtains and Wet Walls

For builders looking to create serene and visually striking designs, Great American Waterfall’s rain curtains and wet wall systems are ideal. The Aqua Rain and Aqua Storm products cater to different needs, with the former designed for open installations like eaves and the latter built into walls for wet wall effects.

“Rain inserts allow us to reduce water demand by up to 50%,” Russell explained. “This means builders can achieve stunning effects without needing oversized

pumps or pipes.” By offering single and double-row configurations, the company provides builders with the flexibility to tailor designs to their specific projects.

Vivid Series Sheers

One of the most exciting developments from Great American Waterfall is the Vivid Series, a line of lighted sheers currently in limited release. “This product integrates LED lighting directly into the sheer,” said Russell. “It’s perfect for creating dramatic nighttime effects.”

Currently available in select markets, the Vivid Series is expected to roll out nationwide in the coming months. “We’re always looking to innovate,” Russell added. “Products like the Vivid Series demonstrate our commitment to staying ahead of the curve.”

Providing Pool Builders a Deeper Bench COVERCARE & AUTOMATIC POOL COVERS

n today’s competitive pool industry, diversifying service offerings is essential for growth and meeting client expectations. Cover Care and Automatic Pool Covers, led by CEO Michael Shebek, have been at the forefront of supporting pool builders and service companies by providing innovative automatic pool cover solutions and maintenance services.

These companies work collaboratively with industry professionals to integrate covers into their service portfolios, enabling them to deliver top-tier service without the steep learning curve.

From Pitcher’s Mound To Pool

Before becoming a leader in the pool cover industry, Michael Shebek had a career that began on the baseball field. A former pitcher

at Ball State University, Shebek was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles. While he ultimately decided to pivot away from professional sports, his experiences as an athlete instilled in him a strategic mindset and a deep appreciation for teamwork.

This background in sports seems to have shaped how Shebek approaches the business of pool covers. Just as a successful baseball team relies on a strong and versatile bench, Cover Care and Automatic Pool Covers provide pool builders with the additional resources and expertise needed to expand their offerings without overextending themselves.

By partnering with these companies, pool builders can add a valuable “player” to their roster—one that specializes in cover installation and maintenance— allowing them to focus on their core strengths.

Supporting Builders With Turnkey Solutions

Cover Care specializes in providing pool builders with a seamless way to incorporate pool covers into their projects. “For pool builders new to automatic pool covers, we offer a partnership akin to their relationship with a concrete company,” explained Shebek. “We handle the installation, ensuring everything is prepared perfectly. Our goal is to let builders focus on what they do best: designing and constructing pools.”

Automatic Pool Covers, a manufacturing arm of Shebek’s organization, also plays a pivotal role in the industry. Founded in 2003, the company designs and produces high-quality pool cover systems that are sold across the United States and internationally. “We’ve always focused on reliability and ease of use,” Shebek said.

Today, Cover Care operates in 30 states across the U.S. and offers customized solutions tailored to the needs of different markets. Whether it’s new construction installations or retrofitting existing pools with covers, Cover Care provides everything from specialized trucks to hundreds of parts needed for each project.

Since its founding in 2014, Cover Care has experienced remarkable growth, expanding from just two locations to 50 across the United States in only a decade. “I feel like we are still in that scaling process,” Shebek noted. “Our growth is only in the second or third inning of the game.”

“Our service trucks are custom-designed to handle 99% of installation and maintenance needs,” Shebek noted. “This allows builders to confidently offer high-quality cover solutions without the logistical headaches.”

As the pool renovation market continues to grow, Cover Care has positioned itself as a key player in this space. Many older pools are being upgraded to include automatic covers for safety and energy efficiency. “Safety and savings are key drivers,” Shebek noted. “Covers help reduce heating and cooling costs and offer peace of mind by preventing unauthorized access to the pool.”

Cover Care’s scalable model has also helped pool builders capitalize on new revenue opportunities, particularly in the years following the pandemic boom. “We were really fortunate to have seen this scalable opportunity prior to the increase from COVID,” Shebek explained. “After years of servicing just our local market in Indiana, there was an incredible opportunity to take the great things we were doing here and create this nationwide installation service business.”

The timing proved to be ideal. “Our timing couldn’t have been better,” Shebek said. “Once the boom from 2022 slowed down in 2023 and 2024, we grew rapidly because of all these new markets that we’ve opened.” The company’s expansion strategy has been largely focused on introducing builders to the world of pool covers. “We are bringing new pool builders into the pool cover world, and they are finding that it’s a world they enjoy being in. It’s helping their business grow,” Shebek added.
