Editor’s LETTER

As we transition from another summer into fall, it’s important to reflect on the challenges that our industry has faced. Rising costs, labor shortages, and a changing market have tested us all. But if there’s one thing that remains clear, it’s that pool professionals are nothing if not resilient.

Consumer interest in pools is cyclical. While economic uncertainty and fluctuating interest rates may cause some to hesitate, the service and maintenance sectors continue to thrive. This is a testament to the essential role we play in ensuring that pools remain a source of joy and relaxation for millions of families.

Now more than ever, it’s crucial for us to stay focused. Let’s set aside the noise from media pundits and political debates. Whether it’s the latest predictions about the economy or speculation about who will sit in the Oval Office, none of that should distract us from what truly matters: delivering the best possible service to our customers.

With that said, I’m eagerly anticipating the respite that the “off-season” brings. This time of year offers a valuable opportunity for reflection and rejuvenation. Personally, I look forward to reconnecting with family and preparing for the holidays, activities that many of you will undoubtedly cherish as well. It’s a moment to recharge, enjoy the company of loved ones, and set the stage for a successful year to come.

This fall, I encourage you to embrace the opportunities ahead. The PSP Deck Expo in Dallas this November is a great chance to reconnect, learn, and grow. Pool Magazine is proud to be the official digital publication for the show, and we look forward to seeing you there

Seen In The Wild: POOL SERVICE CYBERTRUCKS

After years spent on a waiting list, one pool pro finally has the work truck of his dreams.

Since its launch, the Cybertruck by Tesla has taken the market by storm, captivating the attention of gadget lovers and car enthusiasts alike. The bold design and impressive specs of the Cybertruck have made it a coveted addition to many professions, including pool service technicians.

Lately, we’ve seen plenty of photos popping up on our social media feeds of pool companies showcasing their new Cybertrucks. These pool professionals are among the very first who’ve been patiently waiting in line to obtain this innovative new vehicle, with some having waited over five

years for their reservation to be fulfilled.

One such early adopter is Sam Khacherian, owner of Speedy Sam’s Pool Service in Irvine, California. We had the opportunity to ask him about his experience with the Cybertruck and why he chose it for his business.

Q & A With The Owner

Which model Cybertruck is in the photos? “The Dual Motor Foundation Series,” Sam replied. This model, known for its robust performance and efficiency, fits well with the demands of a busy pool service route.

Were you on a long waiting list to get yours? “Yes, I reserved an hour after the first announcement, I believe it was in 2019. I was waiting that long till I got my purchase order in December 2023 and picked it up in February,” he shared. The anticipation and long wait reflect the high demand and excitement surrounding Tesla’s groundbreaking vehicle.

Have you seen any other pool pros following suit and getting a Cybertruck for their route? “I saw one recently on Facebook but not in person. Many have approached me saying they are on the waiting list and asked if I recommend it,” Sam noted.

Why did you choose the Cybertruck over a standard gasoline or diesel vehicle? “I chose Cybertruck over gas and diesel because, number one, I was tired of pumping fuel. On average, I spend $1200-1400 in fuel each month with my previous Tacoma. Doing the math with having solar on my house, which I plug in at home mostly, the truck is charged by morning, ready to go. The cost of the Cybertruck versus my Tacoma is only $200-300 more a month,” he explained. The economic and environmental benefits of switching to an electric vehicle were clear motivators for Sam.

Would you recommend it to other pool pros? “Absolutely. Not only are your gear and tools locked up and secured in the bed, so it’s not stolen, but the comfort of the air suspension, the drive-by-wire, and the power make you enjoy working in it. Not to mention the soonto-come full self-drive, which will help with all the paperwork I can do in the car instead of waiting until I get home,” Sam enthusiastically recommended, suggesting that the practical features and futuristic capabilities of the Cybertruck are what drew him to the vehicle in the first place.

Yes, there are plenty of high end features to love about Tesla’s new vehicle. Enough to put it in direct competition with Ford’s flagship truck, the F-150, which has been the preferred vehicle of those in the pool service profession and America’s best-selling truck for almost 50 years. With that said, the Tesla Cybertruck’s price may still be out of reach for many pool service technicians. The 2024 model starting at $81,895 and going up to $101,985 depending on the trim and options, makes the cost of ownership a significant investment. While the long-term savings on fuel and maintenance are appealing, the initial price tag could be quite a barrier for small business owners and independent contractors.

Mourning the Loss of an Icon: VANCE GILLETTE

The pool industry lost one of its brightest stars with the recent passing of Vance Gillette. Known for his unwavering passion and visionary leadership, Gillette was more than just a figurehead in the industry; he was a trailblazer who fundamentally changed how we view and experience swimming pools. His legacy is one that will be remembered for generations, not only for the innovations he brought forth but for the indelible mark he left on everyone he encountered.

Chuck Baumann of Creative Environments, a close friend and colleague, reflected on Gillette’s profound influence on the industry and the people within it. “I was very fortunate

to meet Vance early on in his career because we grew up near each other, and we chose the same industry to participate in,” Baumann shared. “We started working with Howard Arneson and Andrew Pansini, two giants in our industry who were instrumental in creating the robotic pool sweeps. Not only was Vance in at the ground floor, but he got to work shoulder-toshoulder with two of the early innovators of our industry. Both had a major role in influencing him in his early career.”

Gillette’s career was a quintessential American success story. He began by working closely with industry pioneers, quickly making a name for himself through his

work in sales and marketing. His journey eventually led him to an important role with Jandy, where he spent years guiding the company to new heights. However, Gillette’s impact extended far beyond the corporate world.

A True Champion for the Swimming Pool Industry

“He was always such a cheerleader for our industry,” Baumann noted. “Whenever there would be a national show, he would be that guy in the booth promoting not just his product but the industry as a whole. He made it a point to let all of us know how important having a swimming pool was to our life. Vance was really the one guy

that championed the concept of having a swimming pool was such an integral part of our lifestyle.”

Gillette’s approach was unique in that he shifted the conversation from the technical aspects of pool construction to the emotional and lifestyle benefits of owning a pool. He encouraged industry professionals to focus on how pools enhance lives, rather than just their mechanical superiority. Baumann recalled how Gillette would send daily emails highlighting the joy and relaxation that swimming pools bring to people’s lives, accentuating the emotional connection homeowners have with their backyards.

Changing Industry & Public Perception

“He diverted our industry from being product focused and said, ‘Listen, guys, we need to be promoting the lifestyle and the enjoyment of having a swimming pool in your life.’ Today, we see what a tremendous influence he had. A lot of people don’t understand where all that originated from. He is the guy that is responsible for promoting the concept of outdoor living,” Baumann emphasized. “Vance was the single person that I can go back and put my finger on and say, this individual really took our industry to a whole different level.”

Gillette was known for his positive outlook and his ability to inspire those around him. Baumann described him as someone who could brighten up any room he entered, not by demanding attention, but by speaking with the wisdom and insight that compelled

others to listen. “He had such great passion about our industry, and loved being in the pool business,” Baumann said. “When he opened his mouth and said something, it was very profound. You wanted to sit and absorb what he had to say because you knew it was important. He was a mentor to every one of us.”

A Man Who Saw The Bigger Picture

One of Baumann’s most cherished memories of Gillette involved a story about an early promotional tape Baumann had created to showcase his pool construction services. After watching the tape, Gillette gently but firmly redirected Baumann’s focus. “He didn’t want to offend me, but he said, ‘Chuck, it’s about the sizzle; it’s not about the steak. People don’t need to see how the sausage is made.’ And that’s what Vance was telling me in a very polite way,” Baumann recalled with a laugh. “He was the guy that said, ‘No, no, no. We do it to enhance people’s lives.’ And once you start selling in that direction, everybody is going to want what we have.”

Gillette’s forward-thinking approach and ability to see the bigger picture were not limited to his immediate circle. He recognized that the pool industry’s true competition was not other pool builders but alternative leisure industries, such as boating and camping, that vied for consumers’ disposable income. Baumann recalled a summit meeting where Gillette shared this insight, which was a revelation to many in attendance.

“In the COVID era that just passed

us, people didn’t go out and buy a motorhome, or a new boat, or take a vacation someplace. They invested in their backyard because of how it enhanced their lifestyle,” Baumann reflected. “And that’s a direct effect of what Vance had been promoting to the industry for years, decades.”

Today, the pool industry is thriving, and much of that success can be attributed to the vision and leadership of Vance Gillette. His ability to see beyond the mechanics of pool construction and focus on the joy and lifestyle benefits that pools bring to people has left a lasting legacy. As Baumann put it, “I was saying that for years and years, thank God we had somebody like Vance Gillette to help stimulate the pool industry and guide it in the direction that it’s in right now.”

Vance Gillette’s passing is a profound loss for the pool industry, but his influence will continue to be felt for many years to come. He was a mentor, a leader, and a friend to many, and his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched and the industry he helped shape. As we remember Vance, we are reminded of the importance of passion, vision, and the power of a positive mindset—qualities that defined his life and career.

Rise of the Movable Pool Floor: TIELEMAN POOL TECHNOLOGY

Founded in 1970, Tieleman Pool Technology, began as a family-run business specializing in hydrotherapy. In the early days, the company focused on addressing the needs of patients requiring low-impact movement to enhance their rehabilitation.

Marijn Tieleman, who eventually took over the company with his cousin about a decade ago, reflects on the company’s origins: “There was a lot of demand for movable floors and different heights. In the ‘70s, we were experimenting a lot with trial and error. The focus was on creating solutions for hydrotherapy, but as we advanced, the technology began to catch on for other applications.”

Tieleman recalls, “We transitioned from a purely medical focus to exploring private residential markets. Our hydrotherapy

systems had proven their reliability and efficiency in hospitals, so we wondered if we could adapt this technology for home use.” This shift was not without challenges, but it opened up new possibilities for residential applications, leading to the development of movable pool floors that could transform private backyards.

The Technology Behind Movable Pool Floors

Movable pool floor technology, once a niche innovation, is now making waves in the residential market. Tieleman explains, “The technology involves a frame made of high-grade 316 stainless steel, equipped with a hydraulic system. This system, which uses water hydraulics rather than oil, allows the floor to adjust seamlessly to various depths.” The floor operates as a floating platform, which can

be raised or lowered via a touch screen control panel. This flexibility enables homeowners to customize their pool’s depth, creating multiuse spaces that can transition from a swimming pool to a functional area for other activities.

Market Appeal

The appeal of a movable pool floor lies in its versatility. Tieleman describes how this technology can transform a backyard: “If you have limited space, a movable floor allows you to use your pool area for different purposes. For example, you can have a pool that doubles as an entertainment space. When the floor is raised, it becomes a level surface suitable for placing furniture or hosting events.” This adaptability is particularly valuable for those with smaller yards or who wish to maximize the functionality of their outdoor spaces.

The speed at which the floor adjusts is one of its most impressive features. “Typically, it takes about 4 to 5 minutes to raise or lower the pool floor,” Tieleman says. This rapid adjustment allows homeowners to transform the pool area quickly, making it ideal for spontaneous gatherings or activities. For smaller changes in depth, the adjustment can be even faster, offering a high degree of flexibility.

When it comes to depth, the possibilities are virtually limitless. Tieleman notes, “The depths we can build these pools are endless, really. We’ve actually built a couple of diving pits that go all the way down to 50, 60 feet for commercial diver training. We can’t use the same cylinder we normally do, of course; it has a little different pulley system on it. But basically, there’s no limitations.”

When considering a movable pool floor, pricing inevitably becomes a factor that would preclude this as a product you’re bound to see everywhere. Tieleman explains, “Pricing really depends on how many options you wish to do. But if you have some stairs or some odd shapes, or unique features it can cost more. I would guess in between 150K to endless, really. But for entrylevel, around $150,000. That’s around where you start off with a movable floor,” said Tieleman.

One of the main advantages of Tieleman’s system is its durability and ease of maintenance. “Our systems are built to withstand heavy use,”

Tieleman notes. “We use chlorine and salt-resistant materials, and maintenance is minimal. We typically perform annual checks and repairs if needed, ensuring the system remains in top condition.” This emphasis on longevity and reliability adds to the appeal of movable pool floors, making them a practical investment for homeowners.

Endless Customization Options

The design options for these systems are extensive. Tieleman elaborates, “Customization is a significant part of our offering. We’ve created everything from movable jacuzzis and swim-out benches to pool covers with integrated lighting. The possibilities are endless, limited only by the homeowner’s imagination.”

One standout example of Tieleman Pool Technology’s innovation is an ongoing project in the Bahamas. Tieleman shares, “In this project, we designed a pool with two movable floors, each capable of reaching different depths. It was an ambitious undertaking that required meticulous planning and engineering.” The dual-floor system allowed the homeowners to adjust the pool’s depth for various activities, from swimming to hosting large events.

Tieleman elaborates, “The complexity of the project came from ensuring the two floors operated seamlessly together. Each floor needed to function independently while maintaining precise alignment. Our team worked closely with the clients to tailor the system to their specific needs and ensure it met all safety and operational standards.” The project involved integrating advanced hydraulic systems and custom controls, reflecting a high level of sophistication.

A Recent Case Study in The Bahamas

European Design Trend Becoming More Popular

As the technology gains traction, its adoption in the U.S. market is growing. Tieleman notes, “In Europe, the response has been phenomenal. In the U.S., it’s starting to catch on as builders and homeowners become more familiar with the technology. The key challenge here is educating the market about how it works and its benefits.”

The trend towards movable pool floors reflects a broader shift in outdoor living, where functionality and aesthetics converge. Tieleman highlights, “People are looking for ways to make their outdoor spaces more versatile. A movable pool floor offers a unique solution, allowing for a customizable environment that can adapt to various needs.”

As movable pool floors become more popular, the notion of keeping up with the Joneses is evolving. It’s no longer just about having a pool in your backyard; it’s about having one that remains hidden until you want to reveal it. This innovation represents a new frontier in outdoor living, where the ordinary becomes extraordinary through advanced technology and thoughtful design.

In an era where backyard spaces are increasingly valued for their multifunctionality, a pool that can seamlessly transition between different uses may well become the ultimate status symbol. For homeowners looking to elevate their outdoor living experience, embracing movable pool floor technology might just be the next big leap.

Aquamatic Solar Hydramatic Pool Cover

THE ULTIMATE RETROFIT

| PHOTO CREDITS: AQUAMATIC COVER SYSTEMS

Aquamatic Cover Systems has been a pioneer in the pool cover industry for over four decades. Founded in the late ‘70s in Vancouver, British Columbia, and later establishing a California corporation in 1980, Aquamatic has consistently led the market in innovation.

“We have more patent technology than all the other cover manufacturers combined,” boasts Tom Dankel, Vice President of Aquamatic. The company’s reputation for pushing the envelope in design and integration has made it a leader in the automatic pool cover market, continually raising the bar over the last 40 years.

The latest innovation from Aquamatic is the Solar Hydramatic pool cover, a product that is set to revolutionize the way pool owners think about solar energy and pool

covers. Solar energy is a rapidly growing market, and Aquamatic is at the forefront of integrating this technology into their products. According to Dankel, “Solar is definitely the rage right now. Pool owners want to know how they can have solar heat in their pool and save money on equipment operations with solar. The Solar Hydramatic pool cover is our answer to that demand.”

The Solar Hydramatic Cover: A Revolutionary Product For The Retrofit Market

One of the primary motivations for developing the Solar Hydramatic cover was to address the needs of retrofit applications. “This product is ideal on retrofit applications,” explains Dankel. “There are over ten and a half million pools out there, and only a fraction of them have automatic covers. The market for retrofit covers is huge and largely

untapped by the pool industry.”

The Solar Hydramatic cover allows for easier and more costeffective installations on existing pools, which previously could be prohibitively expensive due to the need for extensive underground electrical work.

Dankel elaborates on the challenges of traditional installations: “If you have a pool with 20 feet of deck in every direction, and the pool equipment is 100 feet around the other side of the house, the costs associated with doing a saw cut in the deck can be very high. Some decks, especially those made of materials like travertine, just can’t be cut without leaving visible marks.” The Solar Hydramatic cover eliminates these issues by utilizing solar panels to power the hydraulic system, thus reducing the need for disruptive and costly electrical work.

The Solar Hydramatic cover is built on Aquamatic’s tried and true allfluid drive hydraulic system, first developed in the late ‘80s. “Instead of using alternating currents and having a power unit plugged in at the equipment pad, we now have a solar panel feeding a battery, which then powers the Hydramatic cover via a direct current hydraulic power pack,” says Dankel. This innovation not only makes the system more accessible and affordable but also reduces the environmental impact of operating an automatic pool cover.

Aquamatic has also focused on improving the components of their system. “We started with four solar panels, but we’ve since found a better panel that can do the work of four. We’ve also learned which battery technologies are best, and now use a lithium battery with Bluetooth capabilities to monitor power levels,” Dankel explains. These advancements ensure that the Solar Hydramatic cover is not only efficient but also reliable and easy to maintain.

The hydraulic power pack system offers several advantages over traditional motorized systems.

Dankel explains, “What makes our system unique is the use of two hydraulic torque motors—one to open the cover and one to close it. This eliminates the need for mechanical linkage and lubrication, making our system incredibly robust and simple to maintain.” The durability of this system is backed by a 20-year warranty, a testament to Aquamatic’s confidence in their product.

In terms of energy efficiency and environmental impact, the Solar Hydramatic cover excels. “Evaporative loss is a huge issue for pools, especially in hot climates with wind. By reducing water loss, our cover also reduces the need for chemical treatments and reheating, saving energy and costs for the pool owner,” says Dankel. Independent studies by Cal Poly and the US Department of Energy confirm the effectiveness of pool covers in reducing evaporative loss, and Dankel notes that the savings can result in a full return on investment over time.

One of the key advantages of the Solar Hydramatic is its ease of installation, making it an ideal choice for DIY enthusiasts. “In

fact, all of our covers are designed not only for builders but also for homeowners,” says Dankel. “We’re the only cover manufacturer that lets people DIY it. I know other cover manufacturers have said, ‘No, you have to have an authorized installer.’ But frankly, I’ve seen end users who have done their installations, and they’re doing it themselves. They’re not rushed to go off to the next job and these things look absolutely perfect.”

The installation process itself is straightforward, especially for retrofit applications. “The mechanism itself assembles with only four bolts. That’s it. Just four bolts and the entire system is assembled,” said Dankel.

For those considering a retrofit pool cover, the Solar Hydramatic is an ideal solution. Its ease of installation, energy efficiency, and safety features make it a perfect choice for DIY enthusiasts and professional builders alike. Aquamatic’s commitment to innovation and quality ensures that the Solar Hydramatic cover will continue to set the standard in the industry for years to come.

Empowering Through Education, WITH CALIFORNIA POOLS

Have you ever daydreamed of building your own pool? For the true DIYers among us, this might seem like a welcome challenge, but doing it professionally for others presents an entirely different undertaking. Imagine transitioning from your own backyard project to a full-scale business, crafting custom pools for clients. For the founder of California Pools, that courageous first step began what would eventually become a household name in the pool industry. However, for many others, that type of leap requires not just passion, but substantial training and expertise.

California Pools, an industry leader in custom residential swimming pool construction,

embodies this dream today. With a focus on comprehensive education, they ensure aspiring pool professionals become confident experts by the time their training is complete. From designing custom pools to the latest construction and maintenance techniques, every phase becomes an opportunity for learning and empowerment.

To delve deeper into this commitment to education, we spoke with Ryder Steimle, the third-generation CEO of the 70-year-old pool business, about the brand’s dedication to training. Steimle shared insights into why ongoing education is so vital to California Pools’ success and how it fosters a community of knowledgeable pool professionals passionate about creating beautiful custom

outdoor living spaces for their customers.

“You probably need to go back several decades to when California Pools first started,” explains Steimle. “The California Pools story really started on a Christmas morning way back in 1952, when my grandfather, Wayne Steimle, wanted to gift his family a swimming pool. At the time, he was a high school physics teacher and wanted a build a pool in his backyard. He figured there weren’t a lot of swimming pool builders or contractors, but he thought, ‘I can do this myself.’ He acquired a swimming pool kit, and the rest is history.”

Steimle’s determination to build a pool for his family quickly evolved into a thriving business.

As he gained confidence in his new craft, he began fulfilling requests from neighbors to build their swimming pools, turning his passion into a thriving business. His handson approach and willingness to learn every aspect of the pool construction trade laid the foundation for what would become California Pools. Consequently, the brand has become renowned for its exceptional quality, craftsmanship, and innovative designs.

Today, California Pools’ mission is dedicated to transforming aspiring entrepreneurs into professional pool builders through its comprehensive franchise program. Consequently, they’re committed to ensuring each new branch they bring on is well-equipped to succeed in the competitive pool construction industry.

California Pools’ support for its franchisees is thorough and ongoing. The experienced team guides new franchisees through every step of launching their pool construction franchise, including site selection, design, hiring, and marketing. “We understand that starting a new business can be overwhelming,” Steimle explains, “so we provide all the necessary resources for our partners to succeed.”

When new franchisees join California Pools, they enter a comprehensive training course known as the Grizzly Program. Steimle explains, “With franchisees, there are different

needs at different stages of development. When we bring on a new franchisee, their specific needs for training and education will be different from those that have been with us for 5 to 10 years.”

The Grizzly Program focuses on the basics of sales, construction, and business management. “A lot of times, they’re going from not knowing anything to needing to know a lot,” Steimle says. “Our business can be overwhelming, so we make sure to take them through those basics. It’s actually a two-year program because there is just so much to cover.”

California Pools orientation program for new branches utilizes a variety of resources, including PHTA courses, an extensive internal operations manual, video content, routine internal newsletters, and onsite training.

For franchisees who have been with California Pools for a few years, eventually, the training approach shifts to more advanced topics. “Once our team members have been with us for more than a couple of years, their needs change,” Steimle explains. “They’ve got the basics down and feel like they have a handle on things. We shift into more advanced ongoing training.”

Advanced level training with experts outside the organization as well as peerto-peer learning, is part of the education process for more seasoned franchise offices.

Understanding that the way each person learns can differ, California Pools balances formal education with more practical, hands-on experiences. “We all learn differently,” Steimle acknowledges. “We’ve found that a mix of various tools and resources is the best way to retain information.”

Becoming a successful pool professional with California Pools involves more than just a passion for the craft. It requires a commitment to continuous learning and adaptation. As Steimle aptly puts it, “If you’re not growing, you’re dying. Training is crucial to ensure that our franchisees can leverage their skills and knowledge effectively.” Through comprehensive training programs, ongoing support, and a culture of shared knowledge, California Pools empowers its franchisees to excel in the competitive pool construction industry. The Etiquette of Performing WARRANTY WORK

Over the last two years, the pool industry has declined in leads and sales. With high inflation, customers are looking to save money on services around the house. Conversely, pool companies are looking for ways to increase sales with additional services. A standard idea many companies have tossed around is becoming a warranty station for one of the major manufacturers. This train of thought has always been considered a smart way to get into customers’ yards. While this has some truth behind it, there is still an etiquette that warranty station companies need to follow.

Many manufacturers require pool firms to sign no solicitation of service agreements when becoming a warranty station. This includes not contacting end users with any mailers, door hangers, selling products, etc. It is essential that equipment installers and service companies

feel comfortable with other companies going into their customers’ yards and not losing business.

Andrew Williams of Williams Pool Care commented. “Unfortunately, poaching customers is a growing trend in the industry and not necessarily due to a misunderstanding. If a warranty station is referred, the warranty company should not approach the customer about service/repairs. Even if a customer approaches them while on site.”

But what should someone do when a customer approaches them about service/repairs?

An option could be telling the customer you are there to complete the warranty issue and for them to contact their pool service technician or installer. Another option would be asking who their current pool service company is if you don’t already know. Once they mention which service company they’re working

with, you should begin by asking why they are looking for another company. Common responses that may come up are that they are happy with their service, but are shopping around for a better price, or they would like to have someone service their pool who is familiar with the equipment they have. In either of these situations, it is in your best interest to let the customer know you are there for the warranty but can speak with their current service provider about their concerns. You would be surprised how appreciative the pool service company can be in handling these situations.

“The best thing I could say about warranty service is that, ultimately, the installer and manufacturer of the product are your customers. Providing good and timely service in the yard puts the installer and manufacturer in a good light, which will help build and maintain your relationship with the people and companies that give you work. Saying bad

things to the end user about the installer or manufacturer’s product will eventually get back to them and can jeopardize those relationships,” said Dominic Borelli of Borelli’s Pools, a top Jandy Warranty Station.

Without the installers and equipment manufacturers, the job opportunities offered to warranty stations would not be available. To be a successful warranty station, you must learn to communicate in two ways with the homeowners. First, once you have received the warranty claim information, contact the customer. Most manufacturers require that the homeowner be contacted within 48 hours. During this initial conversation with the homeowner, it is essential to let them know when you can come out and assess the issue, as well as let them know that you are there to warranty a defective product; if it is not a faulty product, there could be a service call fee. Some may respond defensively, but it is better to prepare them of that possibility than to tell them on the spot. If you find the issue is an installer error, you may want to contact the manufacturer’s technical rep and the installer before telling the enduser. They need to know what is happening so it can be solved with the best approach without throwing

the installer or manufacturer under the bus.

After the warranty assessment has been completed and all information regarding the warranty claim has been relayed to the installer, then it’s best to have the homeowner call the installer so they can convey what was wrong, how it was fixed, or even what the plan will be moving forward. This approach will help eliminate misunderstandings between you, the homeowner, and the installer. We want everyone to have a positive warranty experience.

Craig Dennet of Dennett Pools in Roseville said, “You need to be communicative, prepared, and supportive of the company that is buying from the manufacturer and of the manufacturer. People with an issue with a new pool must remember they are excited about their pool, and we must keep that flow of energy going with it. You can’t be a Debbie Downer. No offense to Debbie.”

Ultimately, becoming a warranty station for major manufacturers is a strategic move that can significantly benefit pool companies, but it demands adherence to a strict code of conduct. Honesty, integrity, and good communication are

the cornerstones of this role. By respecting the obligations that all parties have to one another and maintaining professionalism throughout the process, companies can foster positive relationships with pool service professionals, installers, and homeowners.

One of the key aspects of being a successful warranty station is the ability to navigate the fine line between addressing warranty issues and respecting the existing service relationships. When approached by homeowners for additional services, warranty technicians should tactfully refer them back to their current service providers, unless explicitly authorized otherwise. This not only demonstrates respect for the existing service provider but also reinforces the warranty station’s commitment to ethical practices.

Remember, at the end of the day, the role of a warranty station is not merely about making repairs but about upholding the reputation of the manufacturers and fostering long-term relationships with installers. By delivering timely, professional service and maintaining open lines of communication, warranty stations can enhance their credibility and secure more business.

Buying & Selling A POOL ROUTE

When considering the purchase or sale of a pool route, understanding the intricacies involved is crucial for both buyers and sellers. Chris Webb from National Pool Route Sales (NPRS) shared valuable insights on how to navigate this complex process effectively.

“When working with a pool company and trying to determine its value, the approach we take involves a multiple of the monthly recurring service rate. This can typically range from eight to twelve times the service rate,” said Webb. This straightforward valuation method ensures that both buyers and sellers have a clear understanding of the route’s worth.

Webb elaborated on the regional disparities that can affect route valuation. “There just seems to be certain pockets. San Diego,

for instance, sold for a premium for many years, then couldn’t find a buyer to pay that premium anymore because we’re going to deal with what the market says. If the market doesn’t want to pay it, the market is not going to pay it.” This highlights the importance of understanding local market trends and conditions, which can significantly impact the valuation process.

When it comes to buying a pool route, there are several critical factors to consider. “Buyers in the marketplace are savvy about rates,” Webb emphasized. “Make sure your rates are in the top 50% of your marketplace.” This means that if the low-end rates are $140, mid-range is $150, and high-end is $160, positioning your rates just above $150 makes the route more attractive.

Flexibility is another crucial aspect. “If you have the flexibility

to sell a piece of the route, it opens up opportunities for buyers with different budgets,” Webb explained. This approach helps match buyers’ financial capabilities with the sellers’ offerings, facilitating smoother transactions.

The geographic location of the route is also a significant consideration. Webb mentioned, “Buyers need to ensure that the accounts are where they want to be. For instance, in central Florida, some buyers might look at accounts spread across different regions, but it’s essential to ensure they are manageable given the local traffic and geography.”

Selling a Route

For sellers, presenting an attractive route to potential buyers involves several strategic steps. “One key thing is to keep your rates competitive,” Webb advised.

Run your business as you normally would.”

Sellers should also consider the size and scope of the route they are offering. Webb noted, “If you’re looking to divest, being flexible with the number of pools you’re willing to sell can be beneficial. For example, if a buyer can only afford 40 pools but you have 90, being willing to sell a smaller portion can make the deal more attractive.”

Documentation and transparency are crucial in the selling process. “It’s not just about how much you get paid, but what you can document,” Webb explained. “If your business makes $200,000 and you pay yourself $195,000, we look at the total benefit to the owner, not just the net income.”

Webb also emphasized the importance of being mentally prepared for the sale. “This industry is very personal. You’re in charge of pools where families swim, and you’ve built long-term relationships. Being mentally ready to hand off your accounts to someone new is essential.”

National Pool Route Sales leverages advanced technology and a comprehensive database to connect buyers and sellers efficiently. Their website, features a

detailed listing of routes available for sale, broken down by region and state. Each listing includes critical information such as the number of pools (both residential and commercial), monthly service amounts, yearly net income from service and repairs, average age of accounts, payment history, location of accounts, purchase price, training period, guarantee period, and a covenant not to compete period.

In addition to connecting buyers and sellers through their online marketplace National Pool Route Sales also offers the Million Dollar Pool Man program, taught by Charles Baird, a renowned businessman and consultant in the Pool Service and Repair Industry. Baird has helped over 10,000 pool service professionals achieve success over the past 40 years.

Hot & Trending in Natural Stone FABER CNK STONE

As the summer sun heats up, so does the excitement for refreshing backyard makeovers. This pool season, we’re diving into the latest trends in outdoor living, guided by insights from Eli Olivarez, Sales Manager at Faber CNK Stone. Renowned for its premium travertine, marble, and tile selections, Faber CNK Stone are one of the firms elevating the standard in today’s luxurious outdoor living spaces.

Faber CNK Stone is a renowned supplier of natural stone products, specializing in travertine, marble, stacked stone, and tile. “We originated in Turkey, which is where all of our material comes from,” Olivarez shares. The company has been a significant player in the U.S. market for eight years, starting in

Houston, Texas, and expanding to multiple locations across the state.

Turkey’s dominance in the natural stone market is not by chance. Olivarez explains, “Almost 70% of the travertine and marble we have here in the United States is produced in Turkey. The minerals in the Earth are a lot richer in that area, creating vibrant colors and higher quality material.” This natural richness results in denser stone with fewer pits, making it a preferred choice for builders and homeowners alike.

While natural stone surely has its pros and cons, the primary draw, especially with products like travertine and marble, lies in their timeless beauty and durability. “When you think of travertine and marble, it’s just the fact that

you’ve taken a piece of a mountain or a quarry halfway around the world and you’re bringing that into your backyard,” Olivarez notes. The natural imperfections and rich colors of these stones add an unmatched aesthetic that synthetic materials simply can’t replicate.

Olivarez discussed the unique appeal of natural stone, stating, “Its unique imperfections are the very reason why natural stone is so beautiful.” These organic variations give marble and travertine its distinct character and charm, making it highly desirable for many homeowners. He emphasized that this quality “plays a big role” in its popularity. In comparison to concrete decks, which develop visible cracks over time, natural stone offers a more resilient and aesthetically pleasing option.

Current trends in outdoor living spaces emphasize modern, contemporary looks. This has driven demand for larger format tiles and unique finishes. Olivarez explains, “When you talk contemporary... today’s high-end homeowners are leaning towards large format. They want something that flows, something that just runs all together.” Faber CNK Stone has responded by offering a variety of large-format options, from 24x24 to 24x36 sizes, which are becoming increasingly popular.

“Platinum Ice is probably by far one of our hottest sellers right now,” according to Olivarez, “It’s a new material that we just brought in about six months ago.” This unique product is a sandblasted marble with a Bush-hammered finish. The distinctive white marble, adorned with black veining, captures the classic marble aesthetic that many customers are seeking. “That particular material is moving” quickly as it meets the demand for a striking yet elegant look in outdoor spaces.

Another top product is the Bianco Royale marble, described as “probably one of the purest, whitest marbles you’re going to find out there.” Unlike other marbles, which often show color variations such as blue, black, or red, the Bianco Royale boasts a solid white color, offering a pristine and beautiful finish. Additionally, the Gray Pearl sandblasted marble is highly popular. “It’s sandblasted white marble with blue rays within it. And when you wet it, because it’s sandblasted, when you wet this material, the color just pops out of it.” This vibrancy and the material’s ability to illuminate everything around it make it a sought-after choice for many homeowners.

Texture and finish are also key considerations in choosing stone. “When it comes to natural stone, tumbled finishes are trending, offering a clean look,” Olivarez explains. When advising homeowners on updating their backyards, Olivarez stresses the importance of having a clear vision and prioritizing safety and durability. “Once you begin to do

your material selections. At this stage in the process, it’s important to think of safety as well as how well the materials you choose will hold up in harsh weather,” he advises. For families, sandblasted materials offer a practical and beautiful solution, providing necessary traction and enhancing the overall aesthetic of the space.

In the realm of outdoor living, Turkish travertine and marble stand out for their exceptional blend of durability, aesthetic allure, and practical benefits. Faber CNK Stone is leading the way by offering a large range of options that perfectly embody these qualities. Known for its robustness, Turkish natural stone excels in high-traffic areas and withstands the test of time. Its warm, natural hues and unique textures bring an elegant charm to any space, from pool decks to patios. Not only does the stone provide excellent slip resistance and temperature regulation, but it also boasts low maintenance requirements, making it a practical choice for homeowners.

Entering The Foray of LUXURY POOLS

Pool Magazine goes one-on-one with up and coming luxury pool builder, Nilson Silva, owner of Master Touch Outdoor Living.

In the vibrant and competitive world of pool construction, few names have made as swift and significant an impact as Nilson Silva and his firm, Master Touch Outdoor Living. Based in South Florida, Silva has not only built a thriving pool company but is also redefining what it means to provide a luxury outdoor living experience.

Silva’s journey from a Brazilian immigrant with zero industry knowledge to one of the top-rated pool builders in the Florida market is a true American success story and one he was willing to share with us in a recent interview.

A relative youngster in this industry, Silva is just 35 years old and his story is just about as inspiring as it is unique. “My mother and sister brought me here from my home in Brazil when I was just 12 years old, and it’s been quite a journey since.” Like many who have immigrated to this country, Silva’s early years in America were filled with hard work and adaptation. Initially, when he came to the U.S. he worked as a waiter while attending school and simultaneously helping out in a family member’s business.

Despite his initial background being in computers, Silva found his true calling in the pool industry almost by accident. He saw potential where others saw limitations.

Silva is already making a name for himself in the lucrative luxury market with builds such as this one.

“At the time, I was working for someone who couldn’t grow the business. He was very talented with his hands but didn’t know the other side of it. I said, ‘Man, I’m sure I can make changes and grow.’ With my software background, I ran a bot with Craigslist and started booking a bunch of accounts while learning the trade,” he explained.

Silva’s knack for business and his innovative approach quickly paid off. Eventually choosing to strike out on his own, he started his own pool service and maintenance firm back in 2009. What began as a small operation has grown exponentially over the years. “We started from the bottom, but we’ve just kept growing,” he explains. “Today, we manage about 1,200 accounts with Master Touch Pools and around another 200 with other

firm Step-by-Step Pools. In fact, we recently rebranded to Master Touch Outdoor Living to reflect our broader focus on providing our customers that complete outdoor experience.”

This type of growth didn’t come without its challenges. Silva and his team had to navigate the turbulent waters of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced many businesses to rethink their operations.

“When COVID hit, we really had to readjust,” he says. “We needed more space to store supplies, so we moved to a 12,000-square-foot facility in Coral Springs. It was a big move, but necessary for our growth strategy.”

While Silva enjoys all aspects of his business, he has a particular passion for pool construction.

“Construction amazes me because you’re building beautiful things and turning a blank canvas into a work of art,” he says. “But make no mistake, I enjoy the game, business, strategy, marketing—all of it.”

Silva’s focus on creating a holistic outdoor experience rather than just building pools has set Master Touch apart from the competition. “We’re not just building pools; we’re building an experience,” he asserts. “This area of Florida is a strong market because of the weather and the influx of people moving here, but the success we’ve had comes from the service that we provide. Many of our competitors out there just don’t build the way we do. They’re turning over one job as fast as possible to get onto the next one. For me, it’s more personal.”

The Art of Engineering The Art of Engineering

Since 1980, Aquamatic pool covers have focused on safety, energy savings and ease of use. With our technology, we are setting a higher standard through innovation and design. Supported by a 20 year mechanical warranty, and the most standard features of any automatic cover in the industry.

Hydramatic

•all-fluid hydraulic drive

•one-fourth the moving parts

•zero lubrication & self-adjusting

HydraLux

•unique trackless design can cover virtually any pool

•the only energy saving insulated automatic cover

•manufactured exclusively in the USA

For Silva, part of relaunching himself as Master Touch Outdoor Living has been taking on more high-end luxury projects, a transition that he finds both challenging and rewarding. “It’s very time-consuming, but it’s about making a statement,” he says. “I’m proud of our work, but it does come with sacrifices, especially time away from my family.”

One of the standout projects Silva recently completed was in collaboration with Jonny Nalepa, a well-known name in the industry. The initial setup of the project involved demolishing the existing pool and starting anew.

“The homeowner bought the house for a few million dollars and wanted to transform it into an $11 million property. He wanted to put matching trees around, a huge sunken fire pit, a spa with a specific angle, PAL lighting everywhere, laminar deck jets, a sunken fire bed, and a rain curtain falling from the bar area,” Silva described.

Silva’s team tackled numerous challenges, from the sheer size of

the pool to the intricate design elements. “The equipment alone cost around $150,000 to $200,000, plus there’s a really unique custom color tile provided by Ray Corral,” Silva explained.

While the homeowner spent a pretty penny, the end result is a statement piece that goes beyond just functionality. “We built an experience, not just a pool. The homeowner is a high-end landscaper with his own firm, Broward Landscape out of Coral Springs, so he was extremely invested in the design. I’m incredibly proud to deliver something that the client loves,” Silva shared.

For Silva, creating a personalized and unique pool experience for clients starts with a comprehensive understanding of their needs and preferences. “We charge a retaining fee, and usually either bring in Jonny (Nalepa) or one of our in-house designers. We have strategic questions we ask and provide them a survey to fill out, with lots of questions that pertain to their lifestyle, preferences, and budget,” explains Silva. This meticulous assessment process

ensures each aspect of the pool design is custom-tailored to the client’s specific needs and wants for their outdoor living space.

As Silva accelerates his growth, he begins to walk in the rarified air of those able to tap into South Florida’s lucrative luxury residential market with projects such as this one. His ability to craft custom outdoor living spaces showcases his talent for meeting the unique demands of today’s high-end homeowners. By focusing on creating experiences that blend functionality with personalized elegance, Silva has certainly positioned Master Touch Outdoor Living as one of the local leaders in his market.

Looking ahead, Silva is focused on continued growth and innovation. “We aim to have five locations soon,” he says. “We’re also heavily investing in our company, our training, and our people, which will help us maintain our edge in this fast-evolving industry.”

One-On-One With Justin Bowie OF JMAX PLUMBING

PHOTOS: PUL PRODUCTS

Justin Bowie, owner of JMax Plumbing, has established his company as one of the premier pool plumbing firms in Arizona, specializing in both residential and commercial projects. Their rise to prominence has been marked by strategic partnerships and a willingness to take on the harder plumbing projects others won’t. In a recent interview, Bowie reflected on that, “When I first started my company, we would take anything that we could get, but I was very fortunate to connect with the right people.” Indicating that the trajectory his firm has taken has much to do with linking with today’s leading builders and exhibiting the type of “Can-Do” mentality that they’re looking for.

Working with renowned builders and designers such as Creative Environments, Red Rock Design Build, and California Pools, JMax Plumbing embraced

complex, high-end projects that many plumbing professionals avoided. “The company that I worked for before, and most of our competitors, want to do the smaller stuff. They’re looking for the quick and easy stuff, and want to be in and out. Connecting with these types of companies, not saying no, and taking on the bigger projects has really elevated our company and pushed us into that spotlight of super high-end luxury pools.”

The transition from production work to high-end projects came with its own set of challenges. Bowie highlights the technical and logistical difficulties: “First, technically speaking, those projects where you have those crazy features, they’re generally on hillsides. The projects are usually for high-end customers. So there is zero margin for error. Physically speaking, those types of projects are a lot tougher and a lot more work.”

“Like I said, nobody who’s in business to make money in this industry, wants to do the complicated big stuff. You’re much more liability exposed. It’s harder to invoice those jobs and it’s harder to make money, but we do it the right way, and I think that’s what really set our firm apart,” explained Bowie.

Recently, Bowie’s firm has expanded into distribution, becoming an official distributor and installer of Pul Products. This partnership, Bowie says, is a testament to their commitment to promoting cutting-edge products they truly believe in. Pul is an Arizona-based firm owned by Jim Goettl, whose family has deep roots in the industry.

Jim’s father worked with the Ghiz family to successfully bring the Paramount in-floor system to market many years ago, a collaboration that was successful for decades. “They’re

a very special family with great connections here,” Bowie remarks. “We were fortunate to be connected to Jim through Buzz Ghiz and mutual friends.”

One of the standout products JMax Plumbing distributes is the Pul Return LR1, a high-capacity return that blends seamlessly with pool or spa finishes. Bowie explains the significance of this product: “I’m super proud of that one. We had a big part in that product coming to life. But what makes it so different is there is no other product that does what it’s built to do. It’s built for high-volume return water.”

“The problem we’ve had as an industry has been that pools are getting overflow features now, where we want that to be really beautiful. Aesthetics is at the very top of the list. The only thing we could do before was use multiple returns, which would dot the pool floor like polka dots with all of these fourinch floor returns, or you would do booster sections in the wall. Not really aesthetically pleasing and they weren’t great at mitigating turbulence. Ideally, you want it to be glass-like when it overflows.”

The LR1 addresses the needs of modern pools with overflow features, providing a solution that didn’t previously exist. “The difference being, we’re trying to get a bunch of water back through our LR1 to facilitate overflow spas, overflow pools, vanishing edges, Lautner edges. Those simply just didn’t exist before. Today, they’re so common, that there’s a great need for this product. And again, it’s the only product that does what it does, and it does it beautifully, too, in my opinion,” said Bowie.

Despite its advanced features, the LR1 return is designed for straightforward installation and is competitively priced. Bowie notes, “It installs like any other sump drain or channel drain. The installation method is not very different at all.”

Another noteworthy product distributed by JMax is the Pul Collekt LD1 debris removal drain. This drain stands out for its innovative design and functionality. Bowie highlights its unique features, “I think two things make this drain really unique. One is it doesn’t have a cover. If you look at any of the other products on the market, there’s always a cover you can remove. Well, this one doesn’t have a cover. All it has is a small service hatch. You don’t have that extra component that can fade or lose color or is even large. This is just a 1-inch by 34-inch slit.”

The LD1 also stands out for its intelligent design, eliminating the need for additional safety features. “It’s unblockable, so it doesn’t need a sidewall suction or another means of entrapment protection. If you look at some of the other products on the market, you’re still always pairing your sump drain with a sidewall suction as well,” said Bowie.

While the LR1 return and LD1 drain are designed with high-end luxury pools in mind, Bowie asserts that these products are versatile and can enhance pools of all levels. “I think these products look great in any pool. They’re not cost-prohibitive, and you could put them in your basic entry-level pool, all the way up to your very high end,” said Bowie.

Fall Into Style With WATERPROOF PATIO FURNITURE

As summer heats up and fall slowly approaches, the pool becomes the center of all the action. But creating an inviting outdoor oasis extends beyond the sparkling water. It’s about crafting a space that fosters connection and relaxation for the entire family. The right waterproof patio furniture choices can make all the difference. Imagine comfortable loungers for parents to soak up the sun, durable seating for kids to gather around games, and fire features that create a warm ambiance for family evenings under the stars. This helpful guide will help you find the perfect pieces to create a haven where the whole family can unwind, connect, and make lasting memories.

Many of today’s leading waterproof patio furniture options are crafted from highdensity polyethylene (HDPE) resin, a weatherproof material that won’t crack, peel, or fade. Not only does this mean that your furniture can double as an in-pool and patio set up, but it means there’s no question about it being able to stand up against the elements. This is in stark contrast to traditional wooden furniture, which can warp, crack, and rot when exposed to constant sunlight, rain, and pool water. These specialized resins, on the other hand, are UV-resistant, meaning they won’t become brittle or discolored under harsh sunlight. They’re also waterproof, so you won’t have to worry about deterioration from pool splashes or unexpected downpours.

Vondom, a guiding light in contemporary outdoor furniture design, pushes the boundaries of form and function with their unique collections. Each piece of Vondom furniture will transform any patio into a stylish and inviting outdoor oasis.

The Jut collection by Vondom exemplifies minimalist elegance. Crafted from high-quality,

weather-resistant materials, the Jut collection offers a range of clean-lined pieces like loungers, armchairs, and coffee tables. Their simple forms and neutral color palettes create a sense of understated luxury, perfect for modern or minimalist outdoor spaces. Imagine relaxing on a Jut lounger with a sleek silhouette, enjoying the clean lines and timeless design that seamlessly integrates with your modern poolside retreat. Ledge Lounger prioritizes quality materials and construction methods to ensure their furniture can withstand the elements and years of use. Crafted in the USA, their waterproof furniture collections include comfortable seating, stylish poolside accessories, and even games for the whole family.

Made from 100% recyclable polyethylene resin, the Jut Collection is extremely durable and built to last. The collection includes a lounger, sofa, tables, and more – all of which are available in different finishes. Whether you’re looking to furnish indoors or out, the Jut Collection is perfect for any modern home.

While known for their innovative in-pool furniture, Tenjam also offers a collection of stylish and functional poolside and patio pieces. Crafted from high-quality, UV-protected materials, their loungers, chairs, and tables are built to last, ensuring comfort and elegance for your outdoor retreat. Take the new Woosah pool and patio chair; this modern outdoor chair adds a touch of sophistication to any patio, creating the perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun.

Another patio favorite is the Freelo outdoor chair. It’s popularity is due in part to its versatility. Thanks to its unique and stylish design, this piece doubles as both in-pool and patio furniture!

Their Adirondack Rocking chair takes everything you love about the classic Adirondack outdoor chair and blends it beautifully with the soothing functionality of a rocking chair. The contoured design offers superior comfort, while the wide armrests provide a place to relax your drink or book.

Studio Redrock offers a unique blend of style, durability, and functionality, making their handcrafted concrete patio furniture a perfect choice for creating a luxurious and lasting outdoor haven. Studio Redrock doesn’t just create pool furniture; they elevate your entire outdoor space. Expertly crafted using ultra-high-strength, fiberglass reinforced concrete (GFRC), their pool and patio lounge chairs are built to withstand harsh weather and years of use. Better still, the color is integrally mixed throughout the concrete, ensuring a vibrant and long-lasting look without the need for painting.

The Curve II Chaise Lounger is a popular choice for those that enjoy soaking up the sun on their patio. Studio Redrock offers a unique blend of style, durability, and functionality, making their patio furniture a perfect choice for creating a luxurious and lasting outdoor haven.

Introducing Our 2024 GREEN TO CLEAN MASTERS

TANNER LOGGINS

At Pool Magazine, we celebrate the hard work and dedication of pool professionals across the United States who spent this spring and summer transforming neglected, green pools back into the sparkling blue oases they were always intended to be.

This year, we hosted our second annual Green to Clean competition, inviting pool experts to submit photos of the worst green pools they’ve encountered this swim season and to showcase their impressive transformations.

Our readers voted, and we received an overwhelming number of entries and thousands of votes. Now, we take a moment to introduce you to our 2024 Green To Clean Masters and take a closer look at the winning entries as well as a brief overview of each individual’s process for performing a green pool clean-up.

Katie McKissick stands proudly as this year’s winner, earning her the title “Green Pool Master.” Katie’s process for transforming a swampy green mess into a crystal-clear pool focused on a by-the-numbers approach that took well over a week of patience and follow-up to complete.

“When I first get to a green pool like this one, I check to see how dark the water is and if I can

see the steps or main drain,” explained McKissick, “I’ll take a pole and run it along the bottom to see how thick the sediment and debris layer is on the bottom. On that first day, I hit it with 8 jugs of chlorine and 1 jug of acid followed up with Orenda phosphate remover, which to me is the best product on the market.”

Patience is another key component in McKissick’s

KATIE MCKISSICK

process, “It takes about 3-4 days for it to turn that green color back to blue,” said McKissick, “On this pool, in total, I put 22 jugs of chlorine, 3 bottles of acid, a whole bottle of Orenda phosphate remover, a bottle of clarifier, and a bottle of drop n vac in two separate doses. It took 9 days to go from green to clean. The trickiest part was getting the water to separate and clear. Once it was clear, I balanced the chems and put a new filter in,” explained McKissick.

Katie McKissick holds the distinction of being the second female pool professional in a row to claim the title of “Green Pool Master”. Our 2023 winner, Kelly McCaa claimed the title “Queen of Green” in our first annual competition.

This fact was not lost on McKissick who said, “Being a woman in this industry can be difficult. I kind of feel like you have to prove yourself daily. Winning this competition is super exciting and lets everyone know that women can do it just as well as the guys! They say that you’ll never work a day in your life if you do what you love. I truly love what I do and find it very rewarding to see the impact our work has.”

Jeremy Wheeler, our runner-up, impressed us with his meticulous and thorough process for cleaning pools:

“Step one is fishing all the leaves out. After we feel like we have the majority of the leaves out and we have water circulating, I do two gallons of sodium hypochlorite, and then brush every square inch of the pool. I’ll then follow up by adding two more gallons of sodium hypochlorite,” explained Wheeler.

“Finally, in my process, I’ll add 4 pounds of aluminum sulfate per each 10,000 gallons of water. I like to get at least two turnovers of the water and then cut the pump off. At this point, I’ll give the water up to 72 hours to settle and that’s when I’ll vacuum to waste using an inline cannister and then clear up any remaining cloudiness with the filter,” said Wheeler.

Tanner Loggins, our third-place winner, had another strong showing this year and shared his efficient and effective approach to cleaning swimming pools:

“I always pump out as much algae/debris from the bottom/ walls as possible to allow the chlorine to work better. It goes a lot further with the bulk of algae already removed out of the water. After that, my process is usually to shock the pool, scrub the walls, and clean or replace the filter. My final process is to add phosphate remover and pool clarifier to drop everything, and then I’ll come back 48 hours later to repump the bottom again and reclean the pool filters.”

Jar of Salsa Blamed For Pool Closure & $20,000 CLEAN UP

Here at Pool Magazine, we’ve seen pools closed for any number of reasons, from bad water chemistry to the occasional accident in the pool. However, in all our years of covering the industry, we’ve never encountered a closure quite like this one. A single jar of salsa is to blame for the shutdown of a popular community pool in Needham, Massachusetts, leading to an extensive cleanup effort that could cost the town up tens of thousands of dollars.

The unusual incident took place at the Rosemary Recreation Complex on a seemingly ordinary Sunday. A pool-goer brought a glass jar of salsa into the facility, which eventually broke, sending dangerous shards of glass into the water. This unexpected mishap was reported by Massachusetts State Senator Becca Rausch,

who highlighted the severity and implications of the incident in a Facebook post.

Senator Rausch expressed her frustration and concern over the incident, stating, “The entire community suffers both the loss of our pool and in the purse all because one person decided to bring a jar of salsa to the pool. Please do not bring glass to the pool. It’s not hard to follow this and the other rules. They exist for our collective enjoyment and personal health and safety.”

The aftermath of this accident required swift and thorough action to ensure public safety. Needham Park & Recreation officials had to shut down the swimming area immediately. The cleanup process was both labor-intensive and costly, involving multiple steps to restore the pool to a safe condition.

First, the entire 220,000 gallons of pool water had to be drained into the town’s sewer system. Once emptied, crews vacuumed the pool to remove any remaining glass shards. After ensuring that all debris was cleared, the pool was refilled with fresh water from the town’s supply. But the process didn’t end there. The pool’s water chemistry had to be rebalanced, and extensive testing was conducted to check for any bacterial contamination. This comprehensive approach was necessary to guarantee that the pool would be safe for public use once more.

“We understand that this closure may be frustrating for manys. We will work as fast as we can while always keeping safety in mind,” Needham Park & Recreation stated in a Facebook post, acknowledging the inconvenience caused to the community.

A Costly Lesson

The financial impact of this incident is substantial. Senator Rausch provided an estimate of up to $20,000 for the entire cleanup process. This expense will be borne by the town, affecting the local budget and potentially leading to a reassessment of pool rules and enforcement policies.

The closure of the pool also had a ripple effect on local activities. The Needham Sharks summer swim team, which uses the pool for practices and meets, had to adjust their schedules and find alternative arrangements. This disruption not only affected the swimmers but also the larger community that supports and attends these events.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to pool rules, particularly those regarding the prohibition of glass containers.

While it may seem like a minor infraction, the consequences of breaking such rules can be farreaching and costly. In this case, a simple jar of salsa led to significant financial expenses, disrupted community activities, and temporarily deprived residents of a cherished recreational facility.

Get a Bird’s Eye View of What POOL PROS ARE CHARGING

Skimmer, the industry’s leading pool service software with over 27,000 users nationwide, has introduced the Skimmer Service Rate Index—a groundbreaking utility designed to help pool service professionals see what their peers are charging in a given market. This tool, built on anonymous data from Skimmer’s extensive user base, offers invaluable insights for the pool service industry.

Providing Better Business Tools

“Our goal at Skimmer is to be far more than a software company,” says Jack Nelson, CEO of Skimmer. “In fact, our purpose from day one has always been to build a platform that empowers pool professionals to grow great

businesses. We think providing them with data that helps them run all aspects of their business is just a natural extension of that.”

The Skimmer Service Rate Index leverages data from over 6,500 zip codes and more than 700,000 pools, offering a detailed and anonymized snapshot of pricing strategies across the country. “We’re in a pretty unique position in that our software has the capability to log what pros are charging and by what model they’re charging,” explains Niki Acosta, Skimmer’s Marketing Director. “Through that data, we know what people are charging per stop, per month, if they’re including chems, if they’re not including chems, and we can analyze that data by zip code, by county, and by state.”

One of the standout features of the Service Rate Index is its ability to visualize and compare data across different regions. Acosta highlights the variability in pricing: “We see that consistently, states like Florida tend to lag behind in pricing in areas of the Southeast. We also see that areas in the Northeast region tend to charge a lot more. They have much shorter pool seasons, and so they have pool openings, four months of service or three and a half months of service, and then pool closings. Those models create what we can see as different pricing based on the levels of service that are provided across the US.”

The index doesn’t just provide a snapshot of current rates but also tracks pricing changes over time, offering pool professionals a way to see how the market is evolving. “As you think about different models, there’s also the plus chems or including chems per stop per month. There’s just a lot of wealth of information that allows folks to see what’s the norm in a certain market,” says Nelson. “Especially as we publish these every year, we have the data, and there’s a lot of useful information that the industry should be aware of.”

The data reveals interesting trends, such as the regional differences in chemical inclusion. “In Florida, we see a lot of companies including chems, but you go to markets like Phoenix or Southern California, and it’s pretty split,” notes Acosta. “This is a very useful way of looking at those different models and being able to compare them apples to apples. One thing that we have found, too, is that people who are charging plus chems on average are actually charging more for base service than people that include chemicals.”

Climate also plays a significant role in pricing variability. “I think weather has a huge impact on chem cost,” says Acosta. “In areas of the South where we’ve seen record temperatures, chemical usage is much higher in those areas than they would be in other places. If your model is not accommodating those extra chem costs, then it is very possible that you could be operating at a lower margin than you would than those companies operating in a different market.”

Density of pools and route efficiency are other crucial factors. “Austin, Texas, is one of the more expensive markets in the country for pool service,” explains Nelson. “We see rates to almost 3X here that we do in Florida with some of our customers.” Part of the reason for that is simply how spread out some pool firms’ service territory is in comparison to those in other markets, explained Nelson. “If you’re having to travel 10 miles between stops, that’s going to drive up your fuel cost and your labor cost.”

The Skimmer Service Rate Index also helps pool professionals decide on their pricing strategies. “There’s a lot of data in there,” Nelson points out. “You need to decide what you want to be. Do you want to be the low-cost provider in your market, or do you want to be the quality service provider? We would, of course, encourage people to not try to be the low-cost provider and charge for the value that they’re delivering.”

Collecting and analyzing data from such a vast user base presents challenges, as Acosta explains: “One challenge is the data is only as good as what the pool pros are entering. We can look at the data and know that there are some obvious errors. If somebody has a per-month rate of $25, we know that’s probably inaccurate. We’ve removed some of the outliers. The other challenge is we don’t always know if a pool or a location that’s being serviced is commercial or residential.”

Economic conditions also influence service rates. “The short answer is rates have gone up, costs have gone up, obviously significantly across the board, and most of our customers have increased their prices accordingly,” says Nelson. “Interestingly, to the point where we’ve actually seen in the last couple of years, a lot of our customers became a lot more profitable.”

Ultimately, the Skimmer Service Rate Index is an invaluable tool for pool service professionals looking to optimize their pricing strategies. By providing detailed, anonymized data on service rates across different regions, Skimmer is empowering its users to make informed decisions that can lead to increased profitability and improved business operations. For any pool service professional looking to stay competitive with their pricing, the Skimmer Service Rate Index is a must-have resource.

The

A Pool Warranty Is Only As Good

AS THE COMPANY BEHIND IT

When it comes to swimming pools, a “Lifetime Warranty” is only as good as the company behind it. Let’s face it, most warranties are part of a pool company’s marketing program, used to entice consumers with a guarantee as to the quality of their prospective purchase. Before a purchase, the warranty says “our product is SO GOOD, we guarantee it for life”, but how good is that pool warranty, really?

Warranties usually are not financially backed by an insurance policy or surety bond. Warranties are supported by the good will and financial solvency of the business that provides them.

Many consumers are confused by this. Some expect general liability insurance companies to provide a blanket lifetime warranty, if the

company goes out of business. This often leads to consumer disappointment.

There is a significant difference between warranties and insurance coverage. One is a self-funded program by the company, while the other is backed by the investments of an insurance company.

Warranty coverages end when the company ceases operations. Insurance coverages typically extend beyond the company’s operations. Only companies that purchase insurance coverage or partner with a third-party warranty company to cover their warranty liabilities, will have warranty coverage after they cease operations. Such policies and services are expensive and rarely used throughout the pool industry. To offer better warranties to their customers, pool professionals

should enhance transparency and communication. Providing clear, detailed documentation outlining what the warranty covers, including any exclusions or limitations, is crucial. Educating customers about the terms of the warranty and the distinction between warranties and insurance through informational sessions or brochures can further clarify these aspects.

Implementing a robust aftersales support system is another essential step. Establishing a responsive customer service team dedicated to handling warranty claims and inquiries ensures timely and effective resolution of any issues. Offering maintenance services helps customers keep their pools in optimal condition, preventing issues and reducing warranty claims.

Providing comprehensive warranty coverage that includes a broad range of potential issues, such as structural defects, equipment malfunctions, and surface problems, can further enhance customer confidence. Allowing warranties to be transferable if the property is sold adds value to the customer’s investment and facilitates the sale of their home. Partnering with reputable third-party warranty companies can provide financial backing, reassuring customers that their warranty will remain valid even if the pool company ceases operations. This partnership can also offer extended warranty options, allowing customers to choose additional protection based on their needs and budget.

Finally, monitoring and improving financial stability through regular audits and considering insurance policies that cover warranty liabilities provide additional layers of security for customers. Fostering customer relationships through regular check-ins and implementing feedback mechanisms helps build longterm relationships and ensures customer satisfaction. By implementing these strategies, pool professionals can offer better, more reliable warranties to their customers, enhancing trust and satisfaction while strengthening their reputation and credibility.

Important Items To Check

- Research the company’s stability.

- Understand the warranty terms.

- Clarify the financial backing.

- Differentiate between warranty and insurance.

- Inquire about after-sale support.

- Review documentation.

- Ask about maintenance requirements.

- Ask whether the warranty is transferrable.

Navigating the intricacies of pool warranties can be daunting for consumers, but with thorough research and the right questions, it’s possible to make a confident and informed decision. By fostering clear communication and providing reliable information, both consumers and pool professionals can create a positive experience that extends far beyond the initial purchase. Remember, a warranty is only as good as the company behind it.
