City Government The Sacramento City Council considered and approved the 2017 Cultural Art Awards Grant Program, authorizing the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission to award grants to 53 requesting organizations.

New City Mayor Addresses Latino Roundtable Newly elected Mayor of Sacramento Darrell Steinberg addressed the Sacramento Latino Community Roundtable at its December 3rd meeting hosted by City Council Member Eric Guerra. With over 100 attendees representing nonprofits, businesses, political groups, and individuals, the meeting also hosted Interim Police Chief Brian Louie and Interim City Manager Howard Chan.!

City Council Grants

Local Business Two key Latino eateries are set to open in Sacramento. Chando’s Cantina and Gastronomy is schedule to open the first week of January 2017 at 805 15th Street. It is owned by Lisandro “Chando” Madrigal, owner of Chando’s Tacos. It is his first tableservice restaurant. We understand the menu will include Tapas. Cantina Alley at 2320 Jazz Alley is scheduled to also open in January. A concept by Art Aguilar and Max Archuleta, this Midtown eatery and bar will be located in the alley between J and K streets off of 24th. It will feature traditional Mexican street food, including fried pork belly and pambazo tortas. Continued On Page 2

“We never compromise people’s civil rights, ever! Steinberg told the group of over 100 at the Business Depot in South Sacramento regarding the question of Sanctuary City. “I don’t want to lose federal money for the things that we need, but I’m very clear on what the choices are here. I’m going to protect the Dreamers. We’re going to protect Muslim Americans. We’re going to protect hardworking families…We’re going to be a city that defines sanctuary.”! On the city’s economic opportunity, Steinberg said that Sacramento is already a great city, and that we should all become change agents. “Will we take this excitement about our economic growth and about re-imagining ourselves as not just a government town, and building a high wage jobs base and connect that growth to people who too often are traditionally left out of those opportunities.” Steinberg also stressed the importance of including the city’s youth by taking the lead to connect them to the modern economy. He said this should not just be a project by project policy, but that the children in each of the city’s neighborhoods should be trained for the high wage jobs of the future.
