WHO WORE IT

– If you’re looking to stand out over the holiday season, why not try a sexy tartan plaid pantsuit? Pop singer Rita Ora (L) first rocked the eyepopping Moschino Tartan red plaid suit at the Rimmel London 180 Years of Cool Party. She paired it with her signature red lip and a pair of kick-ass lace-up black boots. Paloma Faith (R) followed up in a similar suit earlier this year at the Rock in Rio Lisboa concert. The singer was dressed head to toe in tartan, including tartan shoes and a tartan beret. Rita wins this round for contrasting the sexy plaid with the black lace-ups.

Holiday Makeup

Glamour by Fanny Pozin

ello Gorgeous! The holiday season is here! So is the snow and cold weather, but that’s not going to stop you from looking fabulous. In fact this is the perfect time to start playing around with your usual makeup routine and glam it up for the holidays. It’s good to have a few tips and tricks in your back pocket for when the party invitations start to pour in. First of all parties mean colour, and Christmas parties are the perfect opportunity to bust out gold and metallic eye shadow, and fun shades of lipstick. I find that a cranberry colour for lips works beautifully on every complexion. Eye Shadow tips: I’m sure you’re familiar with the handy little makeup pallets that come with all of the colours you’ll need for a simple and easy application - corner of your eye, lid, and crease. Even though all the colours are already there, application still seems to be a mystery for some. What I recommend is starting with the lightest shade and applying it in the corner of your eyes, and slightly below the brow. Next proceed with the darkest shade and apply it in your crease, extending it slightly into the lid as well. Lastly go back to the middle shade and use it to blend the lightest and darkest shades you just applied together. By applying the medium shade last you’re able to create a more blended and seamless look. Gold and metallic shades are fabulous to use on your lid, and a brown or charcoal will work great in the crease to create depth.

The Drama: To take this look to the next level you want to use eyeliner. I find liquid eyeliner to be fantastic for its staying power and the ease with which you can create crisp dramatic lines. If you have lighter lashes liquid eyeliner is also great at covering the roots of your eyelashes which can be hard to get to with mascara. Apply eyeliner after eye shadow to make sure it stands out and remains crisp. For extra oomph wing it out for a cat eye effect.

Finishing details: If you’re planning a long night, and you want to make sure your makeup stays on all night don’t forget to begin the routine with primer! It will take away some shine and ensure your makeup’s longevity. Even out your complexion with foundation, and don’t forget to tidy up and fill in your brows to frame your eyes. Apply bronzer and/or blush as appropriate depending on your skin tone and outfit, and tie it all together with a beautiful gloss or lipstick. Even though it’s winter and the air tends to be dry, once you get dancing you just might start sweating! Get your hands on a makeup setting spray and spritz all over your face when your makeup is complete. This will secure everything together and prevent smudging. Remember, there is no such thing as a rule set in stone. Experiment and create whatever makes you feel most beautiful, and enjoy every minute!

odel-turnedactress Brooke Shields has revealed she lost her virginity to TV Superman Dean Cain in her new memoir There Was A Little Girl: The Real Story Of My Mother And Me. The Blue Lagoon star began dating the actor while they were classmates at Princeton University in the 1980s.

the star spent $2,800 on sexy lingerie and fancy dress outfits for a group of four ladies at the Trashy Lingerie store. The reason I’m still happy Paula left Robin has nothing to do with his exchange with the waitress at In-N-Out. He was just being a guy flirting with the cute server while eating a burger -- no big deal. What I did not like is how he was spotted going straight from the burger to the liquor store. For most people this might not be an issue. But for Robin, it is. As noted, he already had to admit that he hits the bottle too much. I’m also quite positive that his escapade with the scantily clad women didn’t happen in a liquor free zone. It’s safe to say, too, that Paula has made it known she’s pushing for full custody and the reason why is she’s concerned he’s a drunk. Some might think her reaction to his drinking is extreme. But I wouldn’t do it any differently. The reason this is so important is because some women might hedge when it comes to making drastic decisions such as this. Their friends might say something like, “Well, you might make his drinking worse if you take his child away,” If you’re one of these women, don’t believe it. Someone else’s drinking is not your problem. It’s also nothing compared to the regret you’ll feel for not intervening earlier were something tragic to occur. I completely agree until Robin stops drinking that Paula should protect their child and herself. I’m not thrilled she moved her boyfriend into her home. Yet, this doesn’t change that she should keep Robin at arms length. It’s clear Robin didn’t have his head in the game for marriage and family. Hopefully, he’ll figure out his drinking. After having sex with Cain, Shields admits she became “overwhelmed” by her decision because she feared her relationship with the Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman star would wreck the close ties she had with her mother, Teri Shields, who was also her manager at the time. She writes, “He was incredibly and painfully patient with me regarding sex. But even when mom wasn’t around, I felt as if she was watching. We were always holding hands and trying to find ways to be alone and kiss, but poor guy, I made him wait and wait and my mom kept track. “Afterwards I got so overwhelmed that I jumped out of my bed. I actually kind of tumbled off it and started running. I was buck naked streaking down a hallway and running like I had just stolen someone’s wallet. “Dean leapt up and ran after me with the comforter in his arms. He hugged me tight and asked me where I was going. I was afraid I was leaving my mother. I didn’t know where I began and where my mother ended and that meant I didn’t know how to fit Dean in.” Her romance with Cain was brief and Shields has since wed tennis ace Andre Agassi and Chris Henchy, her current husband. Rapper Sir Mix-A-Lot has revealed Jennifer Lopez was his original inspiration for hit tune Baby Got Back. The track, in which the MC praises the female backside, has become a hip-hop classic since its release in 1992, and Sir Mix-A-Lot, real name Anthony Ray, owes much of his success to the Latina superstar. He tells TMZ.com that he was inspired to write the track after spotting ‘Fly Girl’ Lopez shake her now-famous rear on sketch comedy series In Living Color the show that turned the singer/actress into a star. Lopez turned out to be good luck for Sir Mix-A-Lot - he won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance with the song in 1993. (TD/WNWCZM/KL)

ell, I’m thrilled she finally pulled the plug on her marriage. And after reading this, I think it’s even better that she didn’t break and go back to him. DailyMailUK.com reported, “He’s been partying up a storm since estranged wife Paula Patton, 38, filed for divorce last month. And Blurred Lines hitmaker Robin Thicke’s penchant for good times seems to extend to his diet. The 37-year-old singer pulled over at an In-N-Out Burger for a tasty treat on Tuesday in Los Angeles, where his good looks and charm seemed to work on the waitress serving him. Driving his black Porsche, Robin enjoyed a quick chat with the waitress serving him his burger and fries, who was all smiles and giggles as she handed him his food. Once he’d wolfed down his food and still clutching his drink, the star headed over to an off-licence in Sherman Oaks, where he purchased a bottle of alcohol which he took back to his car. Robin recently admitted to battling prescription drug and alcohol problems in a legal court document. ‘Every day I woke up, I’d take a Vicodin to start the day and fill a water bottle with vodka and drink it before and during my interviews.’ The singer said at the time of the deposition which was filed in August, that he was off Vicodin for two months, but still drinks. According to In Touch Weekly, Paula is hoping for full custody of their fouryear-old son Julian. A source said: ‘Paula will not allow Robin to be present in Julian’s life if he is still drinking and using drugs. He needs to stop altogether.’ The actress left Robin in February after 21 years together and filed for divorce in October citing ‘irreconcilable differences.’ Paul reportedly moved her new boyfriend, musician Zak Waters, into her home. On Halloween, Robin consoled himself by partying with a gaggle of very scantily clad women. TMZ reported

ctress Jennifer Lawrence has no interest in engaging with fans on social media because she feels so “scorned” by Internet critics. The Hunger Games star has long refused to join the throng of celebrities sharing every aspects of their lives with devotees on sites like Twitter and Instagram, and she admits microblogging is a cultural phenomenon she just can’t quite get to grips with. During an interview on BBC Radio 1, she said, “I will never get Twitter. I’m not very good on phone or technology. I cannot really keep up with emails so the idea of Twitter is so unthinkable to me. “I don’t really understand what it is. It’s like this weird enigma that people talk about.” Lawrence went on to admit her anti-blogging stance is largely due to the nasty comments she has previously encountered online - although she stopped short of directly commenting on her recent nude photo scandal.

She explained, “I had that one (answer) locked and loaded. I really like, laser-focused (on that answer)... It’s because the Internet has scorned me so much that I feel like it’s that girl in high school that I’m like, ‘Oh, you want to talk about her? Yeah I’ll do that!’ Take my hoops off, I’m ready to go (fight).” Lawrence hit headlines in late August when she was among dozens of famous women targeted by hackers who accessed cloud storage accounts and stole hundreds of private, intimate pictures, which were later published online. The Oscar winner spoke out about the “disgusting” incident in an interview with Vanity Fair, dubbing it a “sex crime” and “sexual violation”. (MT/WNVR/TD)

RIANA GRANDE is getting into the holiday spirit this year by releasing a new Christmas song, called Santa Tell Me. The pop star has already tasted festive success - her four-song 2013 Christmas EP was a big hit. The former Disney star is also teaming up with Jessie J to cover Brandy and Monica’s R&B classic The Boy is Mine. Superproducer Rodney Jerkins reveals he has recruited the Bang Bang collaborators to rework the 1998 tune, which he co-wrote and produced, for his upcoming 20th anniversary project.

ctress PAULA JAI PARKER has peeled back the truth curtain for actresses in Hollywood, revealing desperate times have forced her into an extended stay hotel and all the fast cars and parties are just for show. The Hustle & Flow star, who is currently among the stars of reality TV series Hollywood Divas, insists it’s very difficult for black actresses to maintain a career in Hollywood, especially if they’re not part of a Tinseltown clique. She tells Essence.com, “It’s very difficult to explain. Hollywood is very cliquish. Working is about having relationships. It’s more about who you know, who you don’t know, who you’re friends with, who you’re not friends with. Me, being out of the loop, kept me from being able to work. It left me being out of the circle.” She continues, “I don’t feel like I made a lot of money. There are only about three per cent of actors in the entertainment industry that are able to provide for themselves without getting a day job. People are under the assumption that actors make a whole grip. But from all of my career, the most money I made was on an ABC TV show. With that money I was able to buy a home. I bought a condo. After I bought the condo, we only did one season. That money was gone. I invested it. “Actors, especially black actresses, we don’t make that much money. The majority of the films that I’ve been in, even though they’ve been successful, they were independent films. “Another fallacy about Hollywood is that we’re all out here living like stars. These cars that we drive aren’t ours. It’s all smoke and mirrors. A lot of these reality shows that you’re watching, the homes that they’re renting for the show, they aren’t going to be in after the show wraps. I’m strong enough and honest enough to tell you the real (story). Actors don’t make that much money. We really don’t.” Parker’s desperate times have been caught on camera for her new reality show and she’s glad she can show others that Hollywood isn’t all glamour and wealth all the time: “I am not the only person going through homelessness... I am not the only person in America right now on unemployment... As I stood in those food stamp lines and humbled myself and did what I had to do for my son... I did it because I want other people to know that they are not alone. It’s a national issue. “I genuinely believe that God wanted me to talk about it. I just have to have courage and know that it was the right thing... It was still an embarrassing situation for my whole family, not just my husband but my nieces, cousins, in-laws. The majority of our family found out on national television like the rest of the world. I genuinely believe that this is something I’m supposed to be doing.” (KG/WNESSO/KL)

(I) love Iggy Azalea. I wish I had the right to spank her... but I don’t.” – Jim Carrey is a big fan of the rapper, who appeared alongside Carrey during the Canadian comedian’s last appearance hosting Saturday Night Live.

Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin is adding another biopic to his resume by developing a film about poker madam Molly Bloom. Bloom was sentenced to a year of probation and ordered to forfeit $125,000 in May after she pleaded guilty to hosting illegal poker games in New York. Several celebrities, including Ben Affleck, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire attended the invitation-only card games. The Social Network screenwriter will adapt Bloom’s memoir, Molly’s Game, for the film. He told the BBC, “It’s about an extraordinary woman who was headed to law school. Holiday glam on-the-go! During the Holiday season, are you one of

those people running from the office to a party with only enough time to quickly swipe on lipstick – often without the benefit of a mirror? With a few simple tricks, taking your look from desk to dancing is as easy as it is gorgeous, as follows (nc):

FROM THE Desk ...

Start with a neutral colour across the eyelid, plus a sweep of shimmer under the arch of the brow and the inside corner of the eye for a naturally highlighted look.

TO Dancing!

As the sun sets take a more vibrant shade and blend it close to the lash line. Lightly dust the deeper colour through the crease of the eyelid to create a glamorous, eye popping look. Reach for bold hues of green, purple, orange and blue, blended with touches of metallic. These colours define the looks seen all over the winter runway. ~ quick tips ~ EYE SHADOW: A great combination shadow set that takes the guesswork out of matching colours is Estee Lauder’s Pure Colour Envy with five shades in each palette. Its convenient size is also perfect for those busy days to nights on the go. LIPS: Matte red lips are also having a big impact proving that less is more when it comes to shine factor. Brands such as Clinique and Lancôme from a leading cosmetics retailer like Sears, come in all the season’s best colours and are great investments in your Holiday make-up kit.

Image: 123rf.com

When applying (or re-applying) lipstick, a matching lip pencil in a shade slightly lighter than your lip colour acts as a base, helping to define your lips and keep the colour from bleeding – no matter how late your night. More information on Holiday glam and special seasonal offers are available at www.sears.ca.

Great Canadian gingerbread (NC) Baking seasonal treats is a primary part of the holiday tradition – and not only is homemade gingerbread a crowd pleaser at any function, the spicy aroma is bound to inspire budding bakers as well. “Holiday baking is fun for the whole family, mainly because everyone knows how tasty all the effort will be,” says Michael Schach, senior manager, food product development at Walmart Canada. He points out that their Great Value line is popular for keeping costs down, and all of the other ingredients for the recipe can be found in their bakery aisle, or online:

Bake the best gingerbread ever!

Ingredients • ½ cup of unsalted butter at room temperature • ¾ cup of packed dark brown sugar • ½ cup of fancy molasses • 2 large eggs at room temperature • 3 ¼ cup all-purpose flour • 1 tbsp ground ginger • ½ tsp ground allspice • ½ tsp ground cinnamon • ½ tsp baking powder • ½ tsp baking soda • ½ tsp table salt • Icing sugar (optional)

Ingredients 1 package (8 oz. or 225 g) reduced fat cream cheese, softened 1 container (5.3 oz. or 150 g) light vanilla-flavoured Greek yogurt 1/2 cup (125 mL) Pure Via Granulated sweetener* 2 tbsp (30 ml) sugar-free table syrup 1 tbsp (15 ml) lemon juice 1/2 tsp (2 ml) ground cinnamon

2. In a separate bowl, sift flour, ginger, allspice, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add this gradually to the butter mixture and stir until blended. Shape dough into 2 balls, wrap and chill for about an hour, up to 2 days. 3. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line 2-3 baking trays with parchment paper. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the first ball of dough until just over 1/8-inch thick. Use a cookie cutter of your choice to cut out cookie shapes. Lift them carefully to the prepared trays, leaving about ½-inch between them. Add any scraps to the second piece of dough and repeat. 4. Bake cookies for 15-18 minutes until browned a little just around the edges. Let cookies cool for a few minutes on the tray before removing to cool completely. Dust with icing sugar for an easy way to add a festive touch. 5. Cookies will keep for up to 10 days in an airtight container. Additional recipes and snacking ideas can be found at www.walmart.ca/recipes.

five ways to make holiday cooking a little

lighter

SummerLorde.com

(NC) Tis’ the season to indulge, but who says it can’t be done with some moderation? Between the baked goods and the festive family meals, we tend to cheat on our fruits and vegetables with sugar overload.

calories – and it’s delicious.

This season, keep from over-indulging by simply finding substitutions in your favourite recipes. Use plain yogurt for sour cream, oats for bread crumbs, and almond beverage for high-fat dairy. These are just a few easy swaps you can make in your recipes that won’t sacrifice taste, but will leave you feeling a little less guilty.

4. When playing bartender, soda water is a much lighter alternative to tonic water. Or try adding freshly sliced citrus fruits to your flat and sparkling water for added taste. Increased water consumption keeps you from filling up on other calorie-laden drinks.

Here are five tips to lighten your delicious holiday recipes this season: 1. Always choose whole grain options by adding whole-wheat flour in your baking and using whole-grain pasta in your recipes. 2. Make smart ingredient swaps. To get a nutty flavour, for example, substitute in almond beverage. Almond Breeze tells us that cup of their chilled Unsweetened Original beverage contains only 30

3. Challenge yourself to eat-the-season by using ingredients that are winter fresh. Chat with your local grocery provider for a fresh in-season alternative.

5. Be generous to others. If you’ve done a lot of baking for a special night or occasion send your guests home with the left over sweets so you aren’t tempted to overeat. More information and cooking inspiration can be found at www.almondbreeze.ca.
