PORSCHE WILLOUGHBY - 911% PORSCHE SINCE 1969.
SEAN LYGO General Manager Porsche WilloughbyAs always, I welcome you to our latest edition of the W magazine. After a very hectic few months which involved many thousands of miles travelling to all points Porsche, I am content to once again be at Willoughby daily. We have so much more to come, the new all-electric Macan, the second generation of our very successful Taycan range and the long awaited new Panamera in many different guises.
You will enjoy the article written by Randall Lumbewe, one of our 10 guests at the annual Finland Ice Experience, who also joined me in Germany to visit the Factory and the Museum. For me it was very rewarding to watch and listen to our group of Porsche owners experience the wonders of Stuttgart. We were very lucky to actually have a tour of the Taycan factory as well as the sensational 911 production plant. We were led by Martin, an employee of the Museum who has been with Porsche for 17 years and is an absolute mine of information, there appeared to be nothing he didn’t know when it came to Porsche! The highlight for me was to be invited up onto the actual production platform, behind the yellow line, to “look not touch" a new 911 S/T approximately 80% completed. It was the preferred release colour Shore Blue Metallic with the twotone interior Heritage Design, in Black and classic Cognac. We expect to receive our first one of a very small number in July, as only 1963 are produced worldwide.
Once returned to Australia I had 3 weeks to prepare for our next Porsche adventure in Singapore for the release of our new Macan. Along with important product related meetings and information sessions we were able to drive not just one new model, we actually experienced 3 new models. The first was our second generation Taycan with subtle changes to the exterior, more performance and certainly more range. Then the all new Panamera which included the Turbo E-Hybrid with a new 4 litre V8 Turbo engine in a spectacular Madeira Gold Metallic with the option of the Porsche Active Ride.
Our driving was made possible with the assistance of 20 Police motorbike riders who effortlessly guided us through many miles of Singaporean traffic. Our final drive was on a recently built driving track at the airport where we were able to test the all-new Macan in various models and colour combinations. I have to admit to really liking the Provence exterior colour with a Crayon interior.
The Macan range now has exceptional E-Performance coupled together with an outstanding design, which you will be able to see for yourselves at our release towards the end of 2024. The Macan 4 and Macan Turbo will be the first variants available until they are joined with more models, expect the S and GTS soon. One of the first things I noticed was the height of the
front seats, making egress that much easier. The new Macans sit lower in the front and there is a lot more leg room in the rear. Our new dashboard has a touch screen in the middle with an option of a passenger screen on the left enabling them to watch movies etc., as in the Cayenne range. We should note, the driver cannot see the passenger screen whilst driving! You will enjoy our article on the Macan range in this edition.
I am very happy to announce some staff changes in the second quarter of this year, Bonita Jones has moved across to Marketing and Events in a full-time capacity and we look forward to even more Porsche experience track days, Hunter Valley and Orange Drive events and various Willoughby mini and massive celebratory events. We will miss Steve Mangovski who retires mid-year having been with us since July 2005, I will miss him looking after the contracts and organising finance in his very well organised manner. I believe he wants to improve his golf handicap. Although nobody can really replace Steve, we welcome Tiana Velimirovic who will be our new Business Manager having joined us in April this year. Along with our existing Concierges Alec and Wafa we now have our Porsche Host, Justyna Charzewska who will be welcoming you and new clients to our facility.
We have commenced the building of our new Approved Service Centre in Artarmon and are hoping for a completion early in 2025. This is going to be a magnificent Service Centre where you will be able to continue servicing with Porsche Centre Willoughby in our very new home for everything Porsche including Pre Owned Approved Porsches and our Lifestyle Section. We are very close to the Metro just down the Pacific Highway, making your visitations even easier. Once we have finalised some very extensive renovations in Willoughby you will be able to take advantage of our car wash facility for our clients. Once a month we will invite you to visit our sales division for a complimentary coffee and clean, together with a bite to eat at the Carrera Cafe.
Further on in this edition you will read about Joseph Bacha who can be found at Prentice Lane just past our showrooms on the right. He has been working with me for many years and apart from his company being able to detail cars properly, he is the person I trust to wrap our vehicles. Since we met over 30 years ago, I have never ceased to be amazed at his abilities.
As always I look forward to seeing you at Willoughby on your next visit.

Porsche, the epitome of sporty luxury, has unleashed the latest evolution of its Panamera.
PORSCHE MACAN ELECTRIFIES THE SUV SEGMENT
Delivering E-Performance on any terrain with a high level of day-to-day usability. Sports-car-like performance figures are matched by high-performance fast charging at up to 270 kW and up to 624 km of range * .
THE NEW MACAN WITH POWERTRAINS OF UP TO 470 KW 639 PS
Ten years after its launch, the Porsche Macan is heading into its second model generation, now in all-electric form. Through its progressive, timeless design, characteristic Porsche performance, long-distance range and high everyday practicality, the new Macan 4 and the new Macan Turbo aim to completely fulfil the requirements of Porsche customers choosing an SUV. “We are taking the Macan to a completely new level – with exceptional E-Performance, the new Driver Experience, and a very impressive design,” said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, on the occasion of the world premiere in Singapore. Sporty proportions and coupé-like lines
Thanks to the sharper proportions and Porsche Design DNA, the new Macan models look dynamic and dominant. “With the all-electric Macan, we are presenting the first Porsche that we are taking electric from an established product identity,” says Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. “The new Macan is clearly recognisable by its brand identity as part of the Porsche product family. The classic Porsche proportions have been further developed and optimally adapted to the challenges of an electric vehicle. This has further heightened the sporty, modern and dynamic appearance of the Macan. The design makes it clear: The Macan remains the sports car in its segment, even in electric form.”
The shallow pitch of the bonnet and the strongly pronounced wings give the entry-level SUV, which is 4,784 mm long, 1,938 mm wide and 1,622 mm high, a dynamic appearance even when stationary. The new Macan is fitted with up to 22-inch wheels with staggered tyre fitment. The wheelbase, which is 86 mm longer than the previous model (2,893 mm), is offset by short overhangs at the front and rear. The headlights are divided into two parts: the flat upper light unit with four-point daytime running lights is embedded in the wings and emphasises the width of the car. The main headlight module with optional matrix LED technology (standard on Macan Turbo) is positioned slightly lower in the front end. The characteristic Porsche flyline forms a unit with the flat rear window. In combination with the frameless doors with characteristic side
blades, the result is a sleek, sporty design. Strongly pronounced shoulders give the rear a muscular look. The Porsche logo now sits in the centre of the sculptural 3D light strip.
Active and passive aerodynamics for greater range
Porsche combines its design DNA with aerodynamics optimised for range. Thanks to the Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) with active and passive elements and a drag coefficient of 0.25, the new Macan is one of the most streamlined SUVs on the market – with positive effects on range and power consumption. The PAA system includes the adaptive rear spoiler, active cooling flaps on the front air intakes and flexible covers on the fully sealed underbody. Air curtains below the headlight module and the low-slung front end optimise the air flow. At the rear, lateral tear-off edges and the louvred diffuser ensure aerodynamic efficiency.
Two luggage compartments and increased interior space
The new Macan is a performance-oriented SUV with a high level of practicality for everyday use, high-quality equipment and spacious configuration.
Electrification has led to increased luggage space in the Macan. Depending on the model and equipment fitted, the capacity behind the rear seat bench is up to 540 litres (cargo mode). In addition, there is the ‘frunk’, a second luggage compartment under the bonnet with a capacity of 84 litres. This amounts to 136 litres more than the previous model. If the rear seat backrest is folded down completely, the rear luggage compartment capacity increases to up to 1,348 litres. The maximum towing capacity of 2,000 kg rounds off the highly practical qualities of the new Macan.
Depending on the model and equipment fitted, the driver and front passenger now sit up to 28 mm lower than before, while the rear passengers sit up to 15 mm lower with increased legroom. The interior is unmistakably Porsche: the width of the cockpit is emphasised by an integrated black panel. The rising design of the centre console heightens the impression of a low and
performance-focused position in the vehicle. At the same time, large windows give a light and airy feel to the interior space. In addition to the modern digital user interfaces, there are also select analogue control elements – for example, on the air vents and the air conditioning controls. An LED light strip is integrated into the thoughtfully designed trim strip of the cockpit and doors. It acts as both ambient lighting and a communication light. Depending on the situation, it provides information or warnings – such as for greetings, charging processes or in conjunction with the driver assistance systems. The equipment in the new Macan enables a high degree of customisation.
Porsche Driver Experience: high computing power and connectivity
The Macan is equipped with the latest-generation display and operating concept with up to three screens, including the free-standing 12.6-inch, curved-design instrument cluster and the 10.9-inch central display. For the first time, the passenger can also view information, adjust settings on the infotainment system or stream video content while the car is being driven via their own optional 10.9-inch screen. For the first time, the Porsche Driver Experience can also include an optional Augmented Reality Head-Up Display. Virtual elements such as navigation arrows are visually integrated seamlessly into the real world. The image appears to the driver at a distance of 10 metres and corresponds to the size of an 87-inch display.
The new-generation infotainment system is based on Android Automotive OS. The standard Porsche Communication Management (PCM) in the new Macan takes computing performance to a new level. For example, the “Hey Porsche” voice assistant suggests routes, including charging stops, at lightning speed. In the new Porsche App Centre, passengers can directly access popular apps from third-party providers and install them directly in the new Macan.
First Macan with rear-axle steering and two-valve dampers
Porsche developed the Macan with a keen focus on quintessential Porsche driving dynamics and a characteristic steering feel. “Thanks to its particularly sporty seat position and low centre of gravity, as well as its impressive driving dynamics and steering precision, the new Macan delivers a real sports car feeling,” explains Product Line Vice President Jörg Kerner.
The new Macan benefits from a number of active and passive aerodynamic features. With an impressive drag coefficient of 0.25, the Macan sets a new benchmark in terms of aerodyanamics and, in doing so, sets itself far apart from other compact SUVs. This low drag coefficient reduces the energy requirement and increases range.
THE INTERIOR DESIGN OF THE MACAN IS STYLISH, GENEROUS. IT RADIATES A SOPHISTICATED, MODERN SPORTS CAR AESTHETIC.
Both the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo have all-wheel drive. The two electric motors are controlled via the power electronics almost in real time. The electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management (ePTM) operates around five times faster than a conventional all-wheel drive system and can respond to slip within 10 milliseconds. In addition, the all-wheel drive distribution is governed by the selected driving programme. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), an electronically controlled differential lock on the rear axle, also contributes to the traction, driving stability and lateral dynamics of the Macan Turbo.
Macan models with air suspension – also standard on the Turbo – are equipped with the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) electronic damping control. This can also be combined with the steel-spring suspension as an option. PASM now also features dampers with two-valve technology. Thanks to the more expansive damper map, this results in a wider spectrum between comfort and performance. This makes the differences between the driving programmes even more tangible.
For the first time, the Macan has optional rear-axle steering, with a maximum steering angle of five degrees. It enables a compact turning circle of 11.1 metres in urban traffic and when manoeuvring, while simultaneously enabling exceptional driving stability at higher speeds, ably assisted by the consistent and precise front-axle steering for which the brand is known.
Since 2014, Porsche has delivered more than 800,000 examples of the Macan worldwide. This success story is set to continue with this all-electric successor, which is produced in a net carbon neutral way at the Porsche Plant
THE MACAN REMAINS THE SPORTS CAR IN ITS SEGMENT, EVEN IN ELECTRIC FORM
Leipzig. The new models will be delivered to the first customers during the second half of the year. "
“Our aim is to offer the sportiest model in its segment with the all-electric Macan,” says Jörg Kerner, Vice President Product Line Macan. Porsche exclusively uses the latest generation of permanently-excited PSM electric motors on the front and rear axles to achieve excellent efficiency and enable optimum reproducibility of the power output. The numbers alone indicate top-class E-Performance: In combination with Launch Control, the Macan 4 produces up to 300 kW (408 PS, Macan 4: Electric power consumption* 170 Wh/km, Electric range* 624 km, while the Macan Turbo boasts up to 470 kW (639 PS, Macan Turbo: Electric power consumption* 172 Wh/km, Electric range* 616 km. The maximum torque is 650 and 1,130 Nm, respectively. This guarantees excellent driving performance. The Macan 4 accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, while the Macan Turbo takes just 3.3 seconds. The two models achieve top speeds of 220 and 260 km/h, respectively.
New Premium Platform Electric with 800-volt architecture
The electric motors draw their energy from a lithium-ion battery in the underbody, with a gross capacity of 100 kWh, of which up to 95 kWh can be actively used. The HV battery is a central component of the newly developed Premium Platform Electric (PPE) with 800-volt architecture, used by Porsche for the first time in the new Macan. The DC charging output is up to 270 kW. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent within approximately 21 minutes at a suitable fast-charging station. At 400-volt charging stations,
a high-voltage switch in the battery enables bank charging by effectively splitting the 800-volt battery into two batteries, each with a rated voltage of 400 volts. This enables particularly efficient charging, without an additional HV booster, at up to 135 kW. AC charging at up to 11 kW is possible at household wall boxes.
Up to 240 kW of energy can be recuperated via the electric motors while driving. The Integrated Power Box (IPB) also contributes to the efficiency of the new Macan models, while also saving weight and space. The innovative and compact IPB combines three components – the on-board AC charger, the high-voltage heater and the DC/DC converter. The range* is up to 624 km in the Macan 4 and up to 616 km in the Macan Turbo.
With a wheelbase of 2,893 mm, the Macan is even more comfortable on the road than its predecessor.

Porsche Traction Management (ePTM)
The Macan‘s electronic Porsche Traction Management (ePTM) takes maximum advantage of the benefits of the electric powertrain concept with an electric motor each for the front and rear axles.
Both electric motors are controlled separately in near real-time through power electronics. The benefit is that ePTM regulates the wheels five times faster than a conventional hang-on all-wheel-drive system. ePTM‘s control electronics can react (e.g. to slip) within 10 milliseconds to control the correct axle at the right time. The all-wheel-drive distribution can also be adapted to the specific driving modes in a targeted way.
Normal: In Normal mode, the drive distribution aims for high efficiency and range. This means that purely rearwheel drive is used as often as possible. All-wheel drive is used as necessary given the situation, such as when driving dynamically or when needed for safety reasons.
Sport: In Sport mode, the front axle is activated as necessary, with the focus always being on optimal traction.
Sport Plus: In Sport Plus mode, all-wheel distribution that is optimised for dynamics is in constant use.
Offroad: In this driving mode, the Macan switches to all-wheel drive specifically tailored to poor-quality roads. Here, the differences in speed between the front and rear axles are limited by a centre differential lock, which improves traction. High Level I (+20 mm) is also applied.

Porsche Macan Exclusive Turbo colour tone
The new Turbonite metallic tone is exclusively reserved for the Turbo models. Like all of our paints, this one was very carefully composed by the Porsche Colour & Trim experts. Gold elements create an elegant, metallising effect, with the top layer in a contrasting satin finish. The lettering on the rear and the Daylight Opening (DLO), as well as the borders of the side windows, will be given a Turbonite finish for the Turbo Macan models. Further details such as the inlays in the front aprons, the spokes, or the aero blades in the light alloy wheels also feature Turbonite paintwork.
For almost 50 years, the Turbo models have enjoyed an exalted position at Porsche. They stand for a distinctively high performance and represent the epitome of every model series. To emphasise their uniqueness, Porsche is once again sharpening their look.
The Turbo models are, for one, being given a particularly exclusive version of the modernised crest, which is dominated by the new Turbonite colour tone instead of gold. The designers developed this elegant metallic grey tone especially for the Turbo. It is also being used on a number of other selected exterior and interior components, lending the Turbo models an even more unmistakable appearance. Porsche will be successively introducing this more marked differentiation to all model series.
EFFICIENCY REDEFINED
THE MACAN'S TRIUMPH IN PERFORMANCE CHALLENGES
In the relentless pursuit of excellence, Porsche is subjecting the prototype of its highly anticipated all-electric Macan to an exhaustive and rigorous testing programme.
This marks the next chapter for the successful SUV, set to make its global debut in the near future. The vehicle, a ground-up development, has seen no corners cut, with Porsche's engineers sparing no expense during its meticulous development and testing phases.
A decade since its initial launch, the Macan is poised for a second model generation, this time in an all-electric manifestation. Serving as the pioneer Porsche model on the cutting-edge Premium Platform Electric (PPE), the SUV represents an entirely new era for the Macan series. The testing process, designed to ensure seamless coordination of all components and systems, is a testament to Porsche's commitment to excellence.
Real-world testing with camouflaged prototypes takes precedence in Porsche's methodology. Simultaneously, virtual simulations and wind tunnel assessments play an increasingly integral role. Achieving a remarkable Cd value of 0.25 demands a harmonious collaboration between designers and aerodynamics engineers.
Jörg Kerner, Vice President Product Line Macan, emphasises Porsche's dedication to driving dynamics, precision, efficiency, and design. "When we develop a new model, it’s always about the driving dynamics and precision. That’s Porsche. It’s in our DNA. But it's always about efficiency too. And design."
Maintaining the product identity of the Macan series while meeting stringent aerodynamic requirements posed a unique challenge. Close cooperation between the Design department and aerodynamic testing teams was crucial. Peter Varga, Director Exterior Design at Style Porsche, notes, "Finding the optimal connection between our design principles and the specifications given to us by the aerodynamics engineers is certainly a challenge."
Through collaborative efforts, Porsche successfully married its design DNA with range-optimised aerodynamics. The incorporation of Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) components and other targeted measures, such as an automatically extending rear spoiler and active cooling flaps, significantly contribute to the vehicle's impressive range.
The prototypes have endured over three and a half million test kilometres on varied terrains, simulating the harshest operating conditions.
The Macan boasts variable elements on the underbody, including a flat, closed vehicle floor akin to a racing car. Innovative solutions like flexible fairings and aerodynamically optimised tyre contours contribute to reduced air resistance. This teamwork resulted in a drag coefficient of 0.25 during normal cruising, making the new Macan one of the most aerodynamic SUVs and significantly enhancing its efficiency.
In the realm of charging, the Macan features electric motors drawing energy from a 100 kWh lithium-ion battery. The 800-volt architecture enables high-performance fast charging, reaching up to 270 kW. Jörg Kerner emphasises the importance of adapting technology to different charging standards in various markets, ensuring charging reliability wherever and whenever needed.
Driving dynamics remain a central focus, with Porsche meticulously developing the Macan to embody the brand's core competencies. A keen emphasis on the familiar steering feel and the typical driving dynamics of a sports car ensures a unique driving experience. The prototypes have endured over three and a half million test kilometres on varied terrains, simulating the harshest operating conditions.
Extreme climatic and situational loads are scrutinised globally, covering temperature ranges from minus 30 degrees Celsius in Scandinavia to plus 50 degrees Celsius in Death Valley, California. The all-electric Macan's rear-focused all-wheel drive is put through its paces on diverse surfaces, including gravel, snow, and ice.
Porsche exclusively employs the latest generation of permanently-excited PSM motors, providing overboost power of more than 450 kW. The electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management efficiently manages the distribution of torque, offering optimum reproducibility of power output. To maintain the Macan's reputation for a broad spectrum between high performance and comfort, engineers have deployed Porsche Active Suspension Management and rear-axle steering, a first for the Macan, with a steering angle of up to five degrees.
BIG SAM YOUNG'S CULINARY JOURNEY & PORSCHE MACAN T ADVENTURE
In a span of just three years, Chef Big Sam Young has transformed his dreams into reality, achieving milestones that include owning his own apartment, establishing a thriving restaurant – the acclaimed S'more, and acquiring a pinnacle marque in the automotive world, a Porsche. This remarkable journey, intertwined with the challenges and triumphs of the COVID era, exemplifies Young's resilience and determination to realise his aspirations.
YYoung's Porsche experience was curated with precision by Stewart Budd of Porsche Centre Willoughby. Entrusting Budd with his vision of a Speed Yellow Macan with a sunroof, Young was met with impeccable service. Despite not test-driving the Macan beforehand, Young's confidence in Budd proved well-founded. Opting for the well specified entry model, he ensured his Porsche embodied simplicity and elegance, resonating seamlessly with his personal style.
Transitioning from a modest Toyota Yaris to a Porsche Macan marked a significant leap for Young. Acquiring the former vehicle for $16,000 as the dealership's most affordable, albeit a repaired hail-damaged model. Young's choice of the Macan was influenced by the guidance of Stewart Budd explanation of the model range. In the SUV options, there is a choice of the Macan or Cayenne, Young chose the Macan then the T model variant in his girlfriend Grace’s favourite colour, Yellow, with the customised number plate 'GC' after Grace Chen. This choice not only aligns with Young's personal taste but also complements the branding of S'more, his renowned restaurant.

Written by PCW guest, Randall Lumbewe. When you purchase a 911 Porsche there is more to it than the car itself. Porsche Centre Willoughby makes owning a Porsche a complete “experience”, be it from regular updates about Porsche cars through to the W and Christophorous magazines, social drives, track driving and official Porsche Experience Events.
F
For a few years now I have heard about the Ice Driving Experience in the Arctic Circle run by Porsche, and the opportunity and openings to take part emerged in late September 2023 for a February 2024 Ice Experience. This was an opportunity not to be missed since if you enjoy driving, it is a ‘bucket list’ item to do. For the Ice Experience, you begin with the first level, Ice Performance, which as is a 3-day driving event. If 3 days of driving is not enough, you can follow this with Ice Force, the second level of the Ice Experience, which is run consecutively with Ice Performance.
A couple of weeks before our departure from Sydney, Sean Lygo used his fourteen prior trips to provide the PCW Ice Experience attendees a briefing on what to expect – all valuable information even though it is difficult to express how incredible, exciting and challenging the whole experience would be from the extreme weather (compared to that in Australia) to the actual driving experience.
Sean kindly arranged guided tours of the Porsche Museum and the Factory tour, both in Stuttgart, Germany, which would complement the whole trip and add to the total experience for the PCW contingent. This was a day trip from Munich on the InterCity Express (ICE) which took a bit over 2 hours each way. We were introduced to our guide, Martin, a 25-year veteran employee of Porsche, who with his experience across many facets of the Porsche business, was able to provide an excellent discourse on the vehicles and their history of Porsche’s development.
Many of us would have seen YouTube videos of how they build the 911’s. But to witness it in real life and to be provided with an understanding of the teamwork required to ensure each subassembly is dovetailed within the 3-minute time allocation was amazing.
Ice Performance: Saturday Feb 3 saw us onto a flight from Munich to Kittila Finland where the small airport was inundated with at least three plane loads of tourists, skiers, snowboarders, and would-be Porsche Rally Drivers – clearly, we “Rally Drivers” were out-numbered. Our moods lifted once we were greeted by Porsche Experience staff for a brief bus ride to the Hotel in Levi. The hotel was comfortable, and included a couple of bars, restaurants, a handy little Porsche Merchandise store, stocking such merchandise as ski suits, winter wear and Porsche Design baggage some of which made its way back to Australia.
At the same time, we were reminded of an event competition, where the number of tow outs (off the snow banks) were being tallied and a prize for the group with the least town outs would be awarded at the end of the event.
There was no 'rest for the wicked’, and an early rise on the Sunday for breakfast and onto another Porsche Experience bus, but this time to the Porsche track facility. We stepped out of the bus into, minus 5 degrees celsius, and we were informed that as the day progresses the temperatures will actually drop to minus 20! How does that work? The nights are cold, and the days are colder!
Porsche’s Ice Experience conducted in northern Finland 18km north-east of Levi which is made over the top of a frozen swamp. Thousands of litres of water are added and due to the freezing temperatures this makes the ice a stable bed for ice driving which is sufficiently deep to withstand the gouging created by spiked tyres hanging off several hundred kilowatts of an amazing array of Porsches. Potholes in the ice are levelled out at the end of each day by pouring water into them, nature returning it to solid ice in a short space of time.
Each year the driving tracks are re-created and the abundance of snow provides the banks which aid the track mapping. The handling tracks provide the different technicalities and skills needed to drift the Porsches.
The driver’s briefing was a mix of discussion from Porsche’s Alex and a series of instructive videos illustrating the vehicle dynamics and how weight transfer of the vehicle changes the “circle of grip”. The importance of this was to provide an understanding of seating position, placement of hands to the steering wheel, what we were to feel and how to react, particularly where the grip was so limited.
To add more challenges and fun, the range of Porsches available for us to drive included 911 Carrera GTS, 911 Carrera 4 GTS, 911 Turbo S, Taycan GTS and Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S, the latter being used for a “consistency challenge competition” where we were given three laps, where the timing delta of laps 2 and 3 were measured. So, a mixture of two- and four-wheel drive, where for most of us, the 4WD versions were where we were going to learn the most.
The winter tread tyres were all sporting tungsten carbide studs (or spikes). As one would expect the length of the stud and the grip provided is directly proportional. The Dakar had 4mm studs, whilst the others had 1 to 1.5mm studs.
Armed with the theoretical basics of ice driving dynamics our group (from PCW) headed for the Taycans. Driving the Taycan was with mixed emotions due to the difference in sound; however, it was great to be able to handle a 2300kg beast and drift it through the slalom test and then the circle work which involved drifting continuously at almost 90 degrees around a small island of snow! Who would have thought that on day one we could already do this?
For me the thought of driving a Porsche 911 so brazenly is almost unimaginable – some might say sacrilegious! We also know Porsche has recently released the 911 Dakar to the market and it does make you think where this rare and unique vehicle could ever be used. Now we know at least one environment where it is at home! As the days progressed and our skills were honed we were encouraged to explore the limits of our car and driver and to always keep the “Circle of Grip” in perspective. At the same time, we were reminded of an event competition, where the number of tow outs (off the snow banks) were being tallied and a prize for the group with the least town outs would be awarded at the end of the three day “Ice Performance” event.
The 911 Carrera GTS was a rear-wheel-drive “comfort zone” with almost predicable outcomes for driver inputs; absolutely tail out with the slightest provocation of throttle resulting in big smiles. The 911 Carrera 4 GTS was so different on track; for many of us learning to apply the theory presented at driver briefing which for some of us felt counterintuitive. The advice was however if you are not on the throttle you should be on the brake, learning to left foot brake was a definite advantage and keeping hands on the steering wheel at 9 and 3 o’clock and regardless of the attitude and angle which the vehicle was
We would take turns and there would be inspiring talk in the cabins, each willing the other on to the next learning phase.
For me the thought of driving a Porsche 911 so brazenly is almost unimaginable – some might say sacrilegious!
Without doubt, the highlight of Ice Force was driving the Dakar. Fitted with 4mm studs, improved grip, more suspension compliance, 4-wheel drive and GTS Porsche power. The Dakar stressed the zygomaticus facial muscles to the extreme.
largely in. Of course, there were the odd “oh no” moments and it was still instinctive to wind on or off steering lock when brakes or throttle were more productive.
The 911 Turbo S was not too different from the Carrera 4 GTS also having the same length tyre studs, and on track, you can only put down so much power to a slippery surface. The grin factor was still there. What was amazing was seeing the number of excursions to the snowbanks and yet zero damage to the cars. On the first evening, we were treated to an instructor driven hot lap around the Tag Heuer track. It was a mind-blowing experience and performance by both the Porsche Cross Turismo Turbo S and Laura, and once we were towed off the snowbank we felt a lot more comfortable about our own escapades into the snowbanks.
Part of the Ice Experience was also another social event where we were treated to a dinner in a real Igloo. A large Igloo condominium actually, aptly namely The Ice Hotel. Yes they accommodate people there. The floors are “carpeted” with snow covered ice. It you chose the stay overnight you can sleep on a sort of a mattress over a solid block of ice. There is no ensuite but rather shared bathroom facilities in an adjacent building which is not made of ice. We dined in the restaurant. Meals were served on ice block dining tables as we sat on ice block dining chairs draped with sheep skins to protect our derrieres. It was definitely a novel experience sharing a sumptuous repast in sub-zero degrees.
Ice Force: We were provided with the same 4WD cars (sans Taycan) but for most, different exercises on different tracks.
Another driver briefing, this time rather short but instructive given the expectations were more about handling tracks and expected speeds.
The Ice Force event requires having completed the Ice Performance as a prerequisite. There were a few less participants for this event but for most of the Australian contingent and having travelled so far for so long, this made the trip worth our while. Day 1 of the event was a refresher on the Slalom circuit as well as on the figure of eights. We were allocated the Carrera 4 GTS, 911 Turbo S and the 911 Dakar. Instructor involvement was increased, and more feedback provided to help us with techniques.
The weather lived up to the promised minus 20°C, but the Porsches were very happy performing to expectations in this extreme environment.
The twelve handling tracks each offered differing challenges, some with long “straights” complete with a couple of kinks to permit drifting in one direction, setting the car up for a sideways entry to the following kink in the opposite direction. Awesome fun and incredibly satisfying when you get it right. And when you don’t, a short visit to the snowbank ensues.
Without doubt, the highlight of Ice Force was driving the Dakar. Fitted with 4mm studs, improved grip, more suspension compliance, 4WD and GTS Porsche power. So much easier to get a more drifting attitude and control. The Dakar handled like a toy and where we previously thought the rear-wheel drive 911 GTS was fun, the Dakar stressed the zygomaticus facial muscles to the extreme. We were encouraged to go to the limits of the car. Our Porsche Instructor, Admi, was happy to take the wheel and show how it is to be done – and then pushed us to drive to similar limits, which we previously thought were irretrievable drifts. The steering wheel mounted Mode switch has options normal, sport, rallye, offroad and wet. For our purposes, the dial was set to either rallye or offroad. I struggled to discern the difference between the two settings on track and my gut feel was the offroad setting suited me
better. Perhaps it was the increased ride height which may have offered more suspension compliance, or it may have been the tighter settings to the limited slip differentials. Both settings were fun and there was not sufficient driving time to analyse the difference, nor did I have the skills to do so either.
We learnt the art of “Scandinavian flicking” the car, first steering in the opposite direction to where the corner directs, followed by a quick flick to the intended direction of travel. This was an acquired skill and then with soft left-foot braking, waiting for the back of the car to rotate and then accelerating, sufficient to maintain the drift with almost no steering lock. Totally different from how 2WD cars handle.
After the Dakar, we drove the 911 Turbo S – more power, BUT less grip and now on the Forest Tracks with 1mm studded tyres, what could possibly go wrong? Forest tracks seemed shorter than other tracks complete with small immoveable trees lining the edges but with some snowbanks between to offer a level of protection from real damage, should there be an “off”.
The one “off” which made the biggest impression was where not one Taycan tow vehicle was needed, not two, not one tractor but a second tractor to pull the 911 off the snowbank, and would you believe it? Zero damage to the 911 much to the relief of, the driver (he knows who he is).
The social activities were also well organised and enjoyable, from the Welcome Dinner, being served at the Ice Bar at the end of a long day driving, with not just one but three “mystery shots” of local spirits from service in Ice Glasses. Food was excellent, and if you love fish and reindeer you are in for a treat. There’s plenty of both! At the end of the third day of driving, a farewell dinner was held where we gathered to compare notes on the transgressions into the snowbanks, the subsequent recoveries, the skills we had gained and the fun we had shared.
We left Finland elated and exhausted but determined to repeat the experience again and hopefully next time we will get to see the Northern Lights which eluded us due to the cloud coverage.
I cannot thank Sean and Bonita from Porsche Centre Willoughby enough – it was everything and more than we expected.

MARTIN SCHACHT
PARTS MANAGEREmbarking on a remarkable 30-year automotive journey, Martin's interest ignited at the age of 12. In 2020, he joined PCW where he now oversees the parts department, enticed by the allure of the Porsche brand and the close-knit family atmosphere at PCW.
What is your role and how long have you been with PCW?
I have been the Parts Manager at PCW now for three years.
Tell us a little bit about your motoring background?
I started helping my father at the age of 12 with his cars and this ended up becoming a passion to become a mechanic. At the end of school I had the option of an apprenticeship as a mechanic or carpenter. I completed my apprenticeship and worked as a mechanic for a multi franchise dealer for 8 years. After working as a Service Advisor, then Warranty Administrator I progressed into the parts business 26 years ago. This was all within the same dealer group.
How did you find your way here?
I began working for the Suttons Group in 2002 and have been employed at various dealerships within the group for the last 21 years. In 2020 I was asked to take over the role of Parts Manager at Willoughby.
What appealed to you about working with the Porsche brand?
The brand is the benchmark of luxury sports cars and to be offered the role was an easy decision.
What has been your experience working with the PCW team?
The team here is like an extended family, everyone from the General Manager to apprentice mechanics all willing to provide help and support when needed. The relaxed atmosphere makes it a pleasure to work in every day.
Do you have a favourite model?
This is a difficult decision but would say the 911 GT2 RS.
Describe your perfect day at Porsche Centre Willoughby?
Working in a great environment is always perfect and fulfilling our clients’ needs always gives me a buzz.
What has been a highlight during your time at PCW?
I was recently announced the winner of Group A in Australia for the Porsche Aftersales World Challenge which measures results for Parts Managers across the country. The Global Awards Ceremony will be held in April in Europe and I am very excited to be attending.
How do you relax and unwind from a busy day?
Listening to music on my commute home is my choice release.
Tell us about your life outside of PCW.
I have a 17-year-old son who keeps me on my toes and my wife of 31 years. Our two cats and dog are always up to mischief giving us enjoyment. I love my weekend when sports are on. I’m a huge motorsport fan and rugby league and AFL will always take priority over dinner plans.
