THE NEW 911. PERFORMANCE HYBRID

The performance focussed masterpiece

A legend is born at the International Motor Show Germany (IAA) in Frankfurt. It’s 12 September 1963: Porsche presents the successor to the 356 – 111,995 examples of the original 911 – initially called the 901 – are built.

Its successor the 964 comes to market in 1988. An advanced new 911 with allwheel drive for the first time in the Carrera 4, with Porsche having originally designed it for the 959 high-performance sports car. Beneath the trusted bodywork – barely modified apart from integrated bumpers – 85 % of the 964 is made from newly designed parts. From October 1993, after 63,762 third-generation Porsche 911s are produced within six years.

In 1973, the G series 911 is launched with fundamental changes because of stricter USA safety specifications. This generation sees powerful turbo engines and a galvanised body in its top model, additionally launching a Cabriolet, Speedster and Targa versions. 198,496 Porsche 911 G Series are built by 1989.

In 1997, Porsche's fifth-generation 911, the 996, marked a significant shift by ending the use of air-cooled engines. Facing financial challenges, Porsche realigned the 911 with a focus on reducing production costs, sharing parts with models like the Boxster. Despite initial doubts, the 996 became an underappreciated success, selling 175,262 units before production ended in 2005.

The 993 is thefourth generation 911 considered as one of the most desirable editions. Porsche engineers devised a new light-alloy subframe with coil and wishbone suspension. Initially, Porsche offer it only as a Coupé and Cabriolet. The Targa debuts later with a glass roof, which can be descended under the rear window. The chapter of air-cooled engines ends in 1998 after the production of 68,881 vehicles.

Introduced in 2011, the 991 represents the pinnacle of Porsche 911 development. Its design, with tension-charged surfaces and precise details, looks more powerful due to a wider track and a 10 cm longer wheelbase. As the first series with adaptive aerodynamics from the 918 Spyder, it became the best-selling 911, with 217,930 units built by October 2018.

The second generation of the eighthgeneration Porsche 911 enhances the iconic sports car with advanced performance, technology, and design. It features a performance hybrid system, improved aerodynamics, and refined powertrain options for greater power and efficiency. With modern digital interfaces and expanded connectivity, this iteration upholds the 911's legacy as a leader in high-performance sports cars.

Starting in 2004, the 997 Porsche 911 offered a vast range of options: Coupé, Targa, Cabriolet, Speedster, rear- or all-wheel drive, narrow or wide body, naturally-aspirated or turbo engines, and sport versions like the GTS, GT2, GT2 RS, GT3, and two GT3 RS models. With 24 variants, it set a new production record with 213,004 units.

The eighth-generation 911 is wider, more assertive, and advanced. It features broader wings over 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. The interior is inspired by 1970s models, with straight lines and a dashboard spanning the full width between two horizontal wings.

New colour, new wheels, new off-road design package

NEW ALL-ELECTRIC MACAN

Range growth Macan & Macan 4S

WThe new Porsche Macan with rear-wheel drive is available immediately as the new point of entry to the all-electric SUV model series. Next to it, the new Macan 4S is positioned in the upper performance range of the model programme.

While the focus for the rear-wheel-drive Macan was primarily on high efficiency and range, the new Macan 4S will fill the gap between the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo. Like the models introduced at the start of 2024, the 4S is equipped with the electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management (ePTM) system, which distributes the drive power between the front and rear axles around five times faster than a conventional all-wheeldrive system.

The two new models have all the qualities of the second generation of the Macan, including the progressive, timeless design with range-optimised aerodynamics (cw = 0.25). The 800-volt architecture of the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) enables a DC charging capacity of up to 270 kW. The high-voltage battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent within around 21 minutes at a suitable fast-charging station.

Macan:

100 kWh battery/highly efficient electronics

The new Macan entry model also gets its energy from a high-voltage battery with a gross energy content of 100 kWh. Propulsion is exclusive to the rear-axle motor that is used in the Macan 4, with a diameter of 210 millimetres, an active length of 200 mm and output of 250 kW (340 PS * ).

The electric motor has a 480-amp pulse inverter (PWR) in which the highly efficient semiconductor material silicon carbide (SiC) is used. It significantly reduces switching losses in the PWR and enables higher switching frequencies. In combination with Launch Control, the Macan produces up to 265 kW (360 PS * ) of overboost power, and the maximum torque is 563 Nm. From a standing start, the car reaches the 100 km/h mark in 5.7 seconds and has a top speed of 220 km/h. By forgoing all-wheel drive, the Macan is 110 kilograms lighter than the Macan 4 and therefore requires less electricity for propulsion. This results in a combined range of up to 654 km**

Macan 4S: powerful electric motors and PASM as standard

The Macan 4S has a new rear-axle motor and a powerful 600-amp SiC pulse inverter. The electric motor has a diameter of 230 millimetres and an active length of 150 millimetres. Together with the front-axle motor also used in the Macan 4 and the Turbo, this results in a system output of 330 kW (448 PS * ) with a short power overboost to up to 380 kW (516 PS * ). With Launch Control, the maximum torque is 820 Nm. The performance figures are correspondingly impressive: with Launch Control, the Macan 4S makes the standard sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 240 km/h. It has a combined range of up to 619 km**. The Macan 4S is equipped with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) electronic damping control as standard. The adaptive air suspension with levelling system and height adjustment, the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) and the rear-axle steering allow the chassis to be further optimised for increased performance and comfort.

911 SPEEDSTER BUILT AS A SONDERWUNSCH FACTORY ONE-OFF

Porsche enthusiast, designer and Speedster collector Luca Trazzi made his dream of a 911 Speedster come true via the Sonderwunsch programme. The result is a one-off car based entirely on the personal vision of the designer.

SONDERWUNSCH
Porsche enthusiast and designer
Luca Trazzi embarked on a three year journey with the Porsche Sonderwunsch team to create a unique 911 Speedster.

S

Since 1954, Speedster variants have been a key part of Porsche's history, combining open driving pleasure with dynamic performance. Characterised by a shortened windscreen and distinctive rear lid, these models are iconic. However, there’s a gap in the 911's history. After the G Series ended in 1988, Porsche introduced a Speedster based on the 964 in 1989, but the fourth generation 911, the Type 993, never had a Speedster in its regular lineup, aside from two oneoffs and a factory restoration.

Luca Trazzi, a successful designer from Milan, took inspiration from Ferry Porsche’s famous quote: “At the start, I looked around but couldn’t find the car of my dreams. So, I decided to build it myself.”

Missing a 993 Speedster from his collection, Trazzi decided to create one. He collaborated with Porsche's Sonderwunsch team to bring his dream car to life, resulting in a unique 993 Speedster, based on a 1994 911 Carrera Cabriolet. This bespoke creation took more than three years to complete and will be showcased at Monterey Car Week in August 2024.

"As a young boy, I fell in love with the puristic Porsche Speedster," says Trazzi. His passion led him to design a 993 Speedster that unified elements from previous Speedster models. He envisioned a car that preserved the elegance of its predecessors while embracing modern developments.

“This 911 Speedster is our first Factory One-Off for an end customer,” says Alexander Fabig, Vice President of Individualisation & Classic at Porsche. The project even included building a full-scale design model of the Speedster.

“Having a designer as a customer was an exciting experience,” says Grant Larson, Director of Special Projects Design. Trazzi was deeply involved in the project, contributing specific suggestions and closely following the development process.

"My dream was to complete my collection with a 911 Speedster of Type 993. Out of passion, I designed what this model might look like." – Luca Trazzi

The project began with a visit to Porsche's archive, where Trazzi and the team delved into Speedster history for inspiration. Trazzi came prepared, bringing a project book filled with drafts and sketches, embodying the philosophy of the Factory One-Off programme, where the customer plays an active role in the car's development.

Throughout the project, Trazzi visited Porsche multiple times, using his works ID to witness key stages, such as the cathodic dippainting process, usually reserved for new cars. The car’s distinctive yellow paint, named ‘Otto Yellow’ after Trazzi's dog, was developed specifically for this project.

“The rear lid, with its complex forms, was a significant challenge,” recalls Philipp Setter, Manager of Sonderwunsch Customer Consulting. However, the team successfully harmonised Trazzi's design visions with Porsche’s quality standards, fulfilling the Sonderwunsch credo: “You dream it. We build it.”

The exterior of the Speedster features signature elements like the thin black-framed windscreen, conical exterior mirrors reminiscent of 1960s sports cars, and modern four-point daytime running lights. The bodywork, including the rear lid, was entirely redesigned by Trazzi. The car is finished in Otto Yellow, with 18-inch light alloy wheels in Turbo design painted black with yellow accents. The design also includes black stone chip protection sheets, door handles, and air intakes, drawing inspiration from previous Speedster generations.

Inside, the car is dominated by black leather with yellow decorative stitching. The seat centres feature a hand-tailored check

pattern in yellow and black, which also appears in the front luggage compartment, car cover, and a matching touring bag. Carbon elements on the dashboard, centre console, and seat backs further individualise the interior. Notably, this is the first Type 993 Porsche to feature illuminated carbon door sill trims in Otto Yellow, carrying a personalised logo.

Modern touches include Porsche Classic Communication Management (PCCM) with navigation and Apple CarPlay, blending state-of-the-art infotainment with the car’s vintage design. Even the power window switches were customised, with symbols redesigned to reflect the Speedster’s side profile. A gilded ‘One-off’ badge on the dashboard highlights the car’s uniqueness.

Under the bonnet, the car boasts the engine, chassis, steering, and brakes from the 911 Carrera RS (Type 993). This air-cooled sixcylinder boxer engine was Porsche’s most powerful at the time, with a 3.8-litre capacity delivering 300 PS.

To date, only two other 911 Carrera Speedsters based on the 993 generation exist. The first, developed in 1995 for Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, is green with 17-inch light alloy wheels and a Tiptronic gearbox. The second, built in 2001 for an American customer, is a silver Turbo-width 4S model. Trazzi’s Speedster stands apart not only in its design but also in its technical components and origin story.

The Sonderwunsch programme, first introduced in the late 1970s, allows customers to co-design their dream cars, making them a reality with Porsche’s expert craftsmanship. This option is available for all road-approved Porsche models, regardless of age. The process of creating a Factory One-Off like Trazzi’s Speedster involves three key phases: the initial idea, the concept phase with design and technical specifications, and finally, the development and construction of the car. Porsche’s design, engineering, and development teams work closely with specialists to bring the customer’s vision to life, with the customer involved throughout the process.

Trazzi’s 993 Speedster exemplifies what’s possible through the Sonderwunsch programme, combining Porsche’s rich heritage with personalised innovation to create a truly unique vehicle.

WAs Michael Wheeler steps into Porsche Centre Willoughby to pick up his new Porsche 911 Dakar in PTS Mint Green, it’s clear that this isn’t just another addition to his impressive collection. Wheeler, a longtime client of the dealership, is no stranger to Porsche’s performance pedigree. But the Dakar, with its rugged design and off-road capabilities, offers something different — a blend of everyday practicality and thrilling performance that has already earned it a special place in his heart. Over the years, Wheeler has experienced the best Porsche has to offer, but as he drives off in the Dakar, it’s clear this model might be his favourite yet.

At the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2022, Porsche unveiled the 911 Dakar – a sports car that feels just as comfortable off-road as it does on the tarmac. Limited to 2,500 units, the exclusive model demonstrates the boundless versatility of the Porsche 911. Paying tribute to Porsche’s first overall win at the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally, it also celebrates the introduction of all-wheel drive to the 911.

Michael Wheeler explains, "The Dakar is more than just a nod to Porsche’s racing heritage – it’s a perfect fusion of capability and performance. It handles everything, from rugged terrains to the racetrack, with ease. In a garage filled with impressive cars, the Porsche 911 Dakar has quickly risen to become my favourite.

It’s easily the most practical and carefree vehicle I own. Forget about speed bumps and potholes—this car can tackle it all. The suspension setup is so well-tuned that I believe it should be standard across the Porsche range. On the highway, even with knobby off-road tyres, the comfort is remarkable.

Taking it off-road was a revelation. I’ve driven Land Rovers and Cayennes through rugged terrain, and the Dakar holds its own against them. In fact, I’d argue it performs even better, especially with the tyres it comes equipped with. What’s most impressive, though, is its versatility. After an off-road session, you can drive straight onto a racetrack without skipping a beat.

MINT GREEN Introduced during the 964-generation 911 in 1991, Mint Green marked Porsche’s shift away from a decade of conservative colour choices, adding a fresh and vibrant option to the palette. Although it was only available for a few years before transitioning to the Paint to Sample program, Mint Green quickly became iconic. Evoking the spirit of the early 1970s Jade Green, this light and luminescent hue has a breezy, carefree quality, perfect for cruising with the windows down along a tropical coastline. It’s a colour that consistently resonates with enthusiasts, earning unanimous admiration for its uplifting energy.

"Off-road

modifications include enhanced air intakes and cooling systems, with a robust air filter and fan motor from the 911 Turbo to handle dust and heat. Additionally, engine mounts from the 911 GT3 improve stiffness and handling on uneven terrain."

When I compare it to my 911 GTS—an excellent car in its own right but with a firmer ride and manual transmission—the Dakar is far more comfortable. I imagine that if you swapped the off-road tyres for road tyres, the ride would be even more refined, with reduced road noise. The dynamic chassis control makes a huge difference too. Turn it on, and the ride tightens up while still remaining compliant. Without it, it feels a little floaty, but it’s still a solid setup overall.

On the farm, I took the Dakar through some rock crawling, and it handled it effortlessly. It’s four-wheel drive, of course, and while I’m not sure of the exact details regarding the differentials, it had all the confidence of a Land Rover. There was no wheel slip, no clearance issues, and no fear of bottoming out. It felt just as capable as any unmodified 4x4 I’ve driven, if not more so.

On the track, the only notable difference was with the ABS, which seemed to lock up under heavy braking. I assume it’s configured more for gravel and dirt roads than for tarmac, but it didn’t detract from the experience. In fact, I’d say the Dakar is faster than my GTS, largely because the PDK transmission is quicker than the manual in the GTS.

Then there’s the colour. I couldn’t be happier with it. It’s an iconic Porsche shade, and I’m thrilled I managed to secure a GTS slot with this option. What’s surprised me most is how many people recognise the Dakar on the street—it’s not as obscure as I initially thought.

Looking to the future, while hybrid tech is undeniably impressive, with performance figures that are simply staggering, I’m not in a rush to adopt it. For now, I’ll stick to the pure driving experience of the non-hybrid models for as long as I can.

The Porsche 911 Dakar features a 3.0-litre sixcylinder boxer engine with twin turbochargers, producing 353 kW (480 PS *) and 570 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 240 km/h, limited by its all-terrain tyres. The engine is paired with an eight-speed PDK and includes a standard sports exhaust system for a rich sound.

Dakar class

Written by PCW guest, Roger Clarke.
Roger Clarke recounts driving the Porsche Dakar at the Porsche Ice Experience, where rally-inspired engineering meets the breathtaking landscapes of Finland. With its iconic livery and focused offroad capability, the Dakar delivers a thrilling adventure that both tests and inspires.

Living the dream. The Dakar experience was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment you first see the car with the rough roads livery, it’s clear that you’re in for something special. The car is outfitted with snow tyres, each fitted with tiny spikes about one and a half millimetres long, giving it the grip needed for the challenging conditions. When you walk up to it, the Dakar is in its off-road rally position, standing tall and ready for action. The livery is particularly striking, evoking the spirit of the original Dakar 911—a nod to the heritage that makes this car so special.

Despite knowing that the engine is the same GTS powerplant found in other models, the sound it produces is entirely different. There’s a profound sense of theatre as you climb into the fixed carbon bucket seats. From the outside, the car’s stance is elevated, but once you’re inside, you sit as low as you would in a GT3, really putting you in the car rather than on it. This low seating position contrasts sharply with the car’s high ground clearance, making it feel counterintuitive yet exhilarating at the same time.

The driving experience itself is unlike anything else. The Dakar might appear as a rugged off-road machine, but once you’re behind the wheel, it feels just as refined and composed as any other 992. The dash is familiar, bearing the unmistakable design language of the 992 series, but there’s a unique detail—a plaque on the glove box. These ICE cars are all factory models, and each one has a plaque that reads zero, zero, zero, zero, out of two and a half thousand. It’s a reminder that these cars are special. Knowing that you’re driving a car without even a numbered plaque, one that will never be sold, adds an extra layer of privilege to the experience.

The landscape in Finland is absolutely breathtaking. Every vista is a scene of unmatched natural beauty, adding to the surreal experience of driving on ice.

Starting the Dakar is an event in itself. The noise is incredible, clearly enhanced by a specially tuned exhaust. You feel the car come to life as it vibrates under you, ready to unleash its power. On the ice and snow, the car initially feels like any other 992 until you press the accelerator. The torque split to the rear wheels transforms the experience, making the car’s back end eager to step out. The acceleration is surprisingly quick for a GTS engine, and the car never feels rough or unrefined. Instead, it remains composed, even as you throw it around on the ice, the nose tucking in, and the rear sliding out as you navigate hairpin turns.

Driving the Dakar was so exhilarating that for weeks after returning from Finland, I found myself waking up from dreams where I was back behind the wheel. The experience was so impactful that everyone in our group who drove the Dakar came away thinking, “How can I get one?” It’s a car that stays with you, lingering in your thoughts long after the driving is done.

Beyond the car itself, the setting of the Ice Experience was breathtaking. Coming from the warmth of Sydney, where it was around 33 degrees, to Kittila in Finland, where the temperature plunged to minus 34, was a shock to the system. The stark contrast in climates only added to the surreal nature of the experience. The landscape was absolutely stunning—unmatched natural beauty at every turn. I’ve visited Scandinavia before, but I’d never been to Finland, and the scenery was beyond anything I could have imagined. Even as someone who was born in Europe and had been to the far north of Stockholm, the Finnish wilderness was a revelation, an unspoiled vista of pristine snow and ice.

The sense of theatre when you get into the Dakar is incredible— you're seated in fixed carbon buckets, surrounded by the iconic livery, and it just feels special.

Driving the Dakar on snow and ice is like nothing else—the acceleration surprises you, and the car's willingness to step out makes it a true rally experience.

The Porsche Dakar doesn't just look the part; it delivers a driving experience that’s both composed and exhilarating, even in the most challenging conditions.

I woke up three or four times after the trip from dreams where I was driving the Dakar—that’s how unforgettable the experience was.

Porsche meticulously planned every detail of the Ice Experience. Every car colour was chosen to pop against the snow, ensuring they stood out in the wintry landscape. There were no white cars, only vibrant colours like Rubystone, and of course, the Dakar with its iconic livery. The attention to detail extended to every aspect of the event, from the driving itself to the organisation. Everything was stage-managed to perfection.

The experience was top-notch from start to finish. From the moment you arrive at the airport, you’re taken care of—picked up, driven to the hotel, given your lanyard, and told exactly where to be and when. The people were friendly, the food was excellent, and the drinks were plentiful, although after six hours of driving each day, you didn’t feel like indulging much. The driving itself was intense and exhausting, but in the best possible way. This wasn’t just a casual track day; it was a demanding, challenging experience that pushed you to your limits and built new neural pathways in the process.

Despite my usual cynicism, this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Some of the guys I went with are already planning to go again, moving up to the next level, and I’m doing everything I can to rearrange my schedule so I can join them. The Ice Experience in the Dakar was that amazing, something I’ll never forget, and something I’d jump at the chance to do again.

FROM MEDICINE TO REHABILITATION JO BRAID'S UNEXPECTED PORSCHE JOURNEY

Growing up in the UK and transitioning from a grueling medical career to a balanced life in Australia, this rehabilitation specialist found an unexpected passion in Porsche ownership. Discover how she navigates her dual roles as a doctor and a burnout recovery coach, all while embracing the thrill of driving her dream car.

II'm from Orange, but before that, I was in the UK. My dad's Australian—he grew up in Melbourne and a bit further out, towards Yass. I grew up in Cambridge, had a great time there, and went to med school at Nottingham University, which I loved. I did one year as a junior doctor in the UK, but it wasn't for me. So, I decided to move here. I secured a job at North Shore over a phone call—literally called them up and asked if there were any openings for July or August, and in 2023, I made the move. I promised my mum I'd try it for a year and then return, but once I got here, I realised how much better it was. I went from working 100-hour weeks to 40-hour weeks, giving me more time for things like the beach or heading out to the Greenwood. I moved around quite a bit as a junior doctor, living in places like Cammeray and Kirribilli.

I never went back to the UK. I did my specialisation here in rehab medicine. Now, I focus on traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, helping people in the community get back behind the wheel or return to work. I work with a fantastic allied health team. I met my husband at Royal North Shore, he's an orthopaedic surgeon, so he's busy in the central west. I have a part-time role as a doctor, but there hasn't been as much medical work in the central west as I expected. Different things happened in my life, and I retrained as a coach. Now, I'm a burnout recovery coach for healthcare professionals, providing them with mindset management tools via video link. This helps them build meaningful careers, allowing them to decide how much medicine they want to practise, giving them more autonomy rather than feeling trapped by a flawed system. Burnout among doctors is high—well over 60%—and it's partly due to organisational issues, but some individuals, like me, who have experienced burnout, are more prone to overworking. I work with high-achievers, often Type A

personalities, and perfectionists. My focus is on helping them take breaks, not feel guilty about resting, and building a support network. The main areas I cover are mindset, movement, sleep, and support. That's essentially my story.

Now, about Porsche—how did that come into your life?

Great question. Owning a Porsche was always a dream, something I thought would never happen. I was drawn to the style, even though I didn’t know much about the engines. My husband loves cars and reads all the car magazines, so we were discussing getting a new car. We had two big cars—a BMW X5 and a Nissan Pathfinder— but the kids were growing out of their car seats, so we didn’t need two large vehicles anymore.

In early 2022, about 17 months before August last year, we started thinking about our options. We decided to visit a dealership nearby, just to test drive a Porsche. We tried the entry model Macan first, which was nice, but then we came back and tested the Macan S. That’s when I really felt the difference—the extra power made it so much more exciting. It felt possible, even though it was still a long way off, so we put in our order.

It still feels unreal to me that I now own a Porsche. It's my business car, and our eldest son is now boarding at Shore, so we commute a lot. My husband was supportive, encouraging me to get a car I’d enjoy driving, and now the impossible has happened. Stewart, from the dealership, was great to deal with. We tracked the car on the app, and my husband got so caught up in it that he ended up securing a Cayman—the only manual Cayman that came in last year. Within three weeks, we went from having no Porsches to a two-Porsche garage, which is crazy.

We still have the BMW X5 because the Cayman isn’t practical for a family of five, but it works for my husband when he’s just seeing Andy. There aren’t many Porsches in Orange—maybe two or three larger models—but in Sydney, they’re everywhere. At the school, the teachers

WE TESTED THE MACAN S. THAT’S WHEN I REALLY FELT THE DIFFERENCE— THE EXTRA POWER MADE IT SO MUCH MORE EXCITING.

"I

recognise my car, so I don’t even need to put my name on it. Some of them are real car enthusiasts.

How long does it take to drive to Orange?

work at Bathurst Health Service, the main hospital in Bathurst, and I'm based in the heritage building there. Officially, it's known as the Mid Western Brain Injury Rehabilitation Programme, but you could also call it the brain injury team in Bathurst."

It’s about three and a half hours, sometimes as quick as three hours and fifteen minutes if I’m making good time. The Bells Line of Road is the more exciting route, but not great in the rain. It’s a beautiful drive, and I often use it as time to catch up on work, listen to podcasts, or communicate with my team, thanks to the car's tech features. It really is like a mobile office, though I’m mindful of not getting too distracted on the road.

Tell us a bit about the car itself and the spec you chose.

I loved the dark blue, but it wasn’t available by the time I ordered, so I went for one of your blacks. I wanted a different interior, so I chose beige but kept the seat belts black. I didn’t want the Macan badge on the back, just the Porsche lettering in the rear light. We’ve joked about the tint in Orange—I wanted a darker, deeply tinted windows, but that’s still on the to-do list.

The car is an absolute pleasure to drive. It’s the comfiest, raciest, and best-handling car I’ve ever been in, and I can’t see myself driving anything else. It’s part of the family now.

Would you get another Macan, or would you consider a different model next time?

I don’t think I’d go for a Cayenne—I don’t need anything bigger than what I have now. The Macan fits perfectly with our family, especially since we still have the X5. The only other model I’d consider is the Taycan, which is electric. But for now, I’m really happy with my Macan.

PTHE NEW PORSCHE CAYENNE GTS MODELS

The integration of Porsche Traction Management (PTM) and optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) ensures optimal on-road performance.

The GTS’s two-valve damper technology and twochamber air suspension deliver a dynamic spring rate while maintaining driver comfort. Enhanced front axle pivot bearings from the Turbo GT model increase negative camber by 0.58 degrees, resulting in agile cornering and exceptional handling.

MORE EFFICIENT AND POWERFUL V8 ENGINE

The Cayenne GTS’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, developed and manufactured by Porsche, has been significantly revised

for improved efficiency and performance. It now delivers 368 kW (500 PS *), up by 30 kW (40 PS *) from the previous model, and a maximum torque of 660 Nm, an increase of 40 Nm. The revised eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission enhances driving performance with quicker response and shift times in Sport and Sport Plus modes.

The new GTS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, with a top speed of 275 km/h. It features an independent water-cooling circuit for the all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM), a technology borrowed from the Turbo GT to stabilise performance under continuous load.

EXCLUSIVE GTS-STYLE DESIGN AND EQUIPMENT

The Cayenne GTS stands out with its distinctive design elements, including black ‘GTS’ lettering, a unique front end with larger cooling air intakes, dark-tinted headlights and taillights, and red brake calipers. The Sport Design package includes body attachments like side skirts and front inlays in High-Gloss Black, and dark bronze tailpipes for the sports exhaust system. The 21-inch RS Spyder-design wheels, finished in anthracite grey, further enhance the vehicle's appearance.

Inside, the Cayenne GTS features a heated GT sports steering wheel and Race-Tex material covering the roof lining, armrests, door panels, and sports seats. Two GTSspecific interior packages in Carmine Red or Slate Grey Neo offer additional customisation options.

NEW DRIVER EXPERIENCE WITH AMBIENT LIGHTING AND SURROUND SOUND

The latest Cayenne GTS models include the Porsche Driver Experience with a curved digital instrument cluster and an optional passenger display. The Sport Design package incorporates dark-tinted HD matrix LED headlights and air suspension. A Bose® surround sound system and ambient lighting add to the refined driving experience. The Cayenne GTS Coupé also features a fixed panoramic glass roof and an adaptive rear spoiler.

For those seeking an even sportier feel, optional lightweight sports packages offer a sports exhaust system with centrally positioned dark bronze tailpipes, a lightweight roof, and a carbon rear diffuser. These packages can reduce vehicle weight by up to 25 kilograms.

With a passion for Porsche instilled by her engineer father, she’s found at PCW the perfect blend of professional excellence and a united, supportive team.

What is your role at PCW?

Senior Business Manager.

How long have you been with PCW?

Since April 2024.

Tell us a little bit about your motoring background?

I started in the motor industry at seventeen. Before joining Porsche Centre Willoughby, I worked for nearly ten years at Peter Warren Automotive, where I was a Business Manager at Jaguar Land Rover. It was a great experience, especially since Porsche and JLR are both under the Volkswagen Financial Services umbrella.

How did you find your way here?

It felt like the universe guided me! A mutual connection with a recruiter led to an introduction with Sean Lygo. Although there wasn't a position available at the time, I later received a call from Sean informing me that Steve Mangovski, the former Senior Business Manager, was retiring after 19 years. Let’s just say, I quickly attended that second interview!

What appealed to you about working with the Porsche brand?

I've had a passion for Porsche from a very young age. My father, who is an engineer, had a deep appreciation for Porsche’s exceptional manufacturing and rich history, which he passed on to me.

How have you found PCW compared to other luxury car brands you've worked for?

The lifestyle, track days, events, and the people—this is unmatched automotive class. It's truly a privilege to be part of it.

What has been your experience working with the PCW team?

The team at PCW feels like family. We share a close bond and work extremely well together.

Do you have a favourite model?

That’s a tough one, but I’d have to say the Manual 911 GT3 Touring or 911 Turbo S!

I truly appreciate my clients and meeting incredible people. My personal and business life is all about being welcoming, warm and creating long term relationships.

From Aspen slopes to Porsche Racetracks The Adventures of David Withers

In this exclusive interview for Porsche Centre Willoughby's W Magazine, David Withers takes us through his fascinating journey from a family steeped in Australia’s tourism history to his enduring passion for Porsches. Withers' story intertwines motorsport, business acumen, and a love for iconic cars.

TThe Withers Pty Ltd family business was originally known as the White Chars-a-bancs before it was renamed Pioneer Tours in 1920. The image above shows the Withers Pty Ltd White Char-a-banc on the first ever tour from Melbourne to Sydney in 1916 driven by my Father.

The stop was in the former Gold-mining town of Kiandra in the Snowy Mountains of NSW, which has the remarkable reputation as the birthplace of the sport of skiing.

FIS recognises Kiandra as the site of the world's first ski race. It is thought skiing was started by Scandinavian gold miners, and a rope tow was used to ascend the mountain.

At dinner parties, you could win bets by claiming that skiing was invented in Australia. It's hard to believe, but in those days, snow was considered more of a nuisance than something to enjoy. The English aristocracy, however, introduced skiing as a sport after visiting Australia, and happened across this new sport. They brought the concept back to Europe, establishing it in Switzerland, specifically in St. Moritz. The history of skiing and Kiandra's role in it is well-documented.

"I met Geoff and joined the Club, which, in hindsight, ended up costing me a substantial amount of money."

My father owned Pioneer Tours, having driven for them as a teenager before heading to Europe as an aircraft mechanic during the First World War. He was lucky—the war ended just as he arrived, so he never saw combat. I bought my first car in 1959, a 1925 Rolls Royce Phantom 1, which I used to drive to Melbourne Tech. My father, a skilled mechanic, managed to fix its engine, which wasn’t running properly, as he was familiar with 1920's engines from working on the buses.

Our family's involvement in tourism spans generations, starting with my grandfather, who modified cars to drive people around Victoria. They later ran a successful tour business across Australia until the Second World War brought it to an end. After the war, Reg Ansett bought Pioneer Tours, and a longstanding agreement prevented his other company, Parlorcars, from operating out of Victoria. This led to restrictions on running tours between Melbourne and Sydney, as the government aimed to protect the railways. However, Section 92 of the Constitution eventually allowed free trade between states, enabling us to expand.

I moved to Sydney at age 22 to manage the business, where we expanded into ski holidays and tours. Although I was young, I quickly got going, and our ski tour business grew significantly.

In the 1970s, I founded a ski travel business Travelplan that eventually became the world's largest operator for heli-skiing tours to Canada and skiing in Aspen. Despite challenges like COVID, the business remains strong, with Australians continuing to flock to popular ski destinations like Aspen and Japan.

As for my passion for Porsches, I bought my first one in 1980, and since then, I've owned 33 Porsches, both road and race cars. I've bought and restored several, including two 1973 RS models. Porsche has been a significant part of my life, both as a hobby and a successful investment.

DAVID WITHERS' MOTORSPORT JOURNEY

I’m not sure if you're aware of my Porsche motorsport history, so I've summarised it below in case it’s of interest.

Out of the 33 Porsches I’ve owned, five were race cars. These included two 1973 RS models, two 993 RS, two 996 GT3 (Gen 1 and 2), and a variety of Turbos.

My first Porsche was a 911 SC in 1980. A friend of mine also had an SC and was once interviewed by Geoff Morgan for a job. When Geoff discovered he had a Porsche, the job interview quickly turned into a discussion about Porsche Club events. That’s how I met Geoff and joined the Club, which, in hindsight, ended up costing me a substantial amount of money.

I started competing around 1990 in the Porsche Cup, which featured power-to-weight classes. I began in Class B with a 914/6, and later moved to Class A, driving a 911 with 964 RSR and 993 RSR bodywork.

The series took us all over Australia, including Tasmania and Western Australia. We were a support category at the Adelaide Australian Grand Prix for three years in the mid-1990s, and at the first modern AGP at Albert Park in 2016. Additionally, we raced at the IndyCar event on the Gold Coast in 1999 and 2000.

I took a break for a while but returned to racing around 2005 in the Historic Group S category, initially with a 3.0-litre Carrera, followed by a 2.7 Carrera. We were fortunate enough to have three cars invited to participate in the Rennsport Reunions at Laguna Seca, California, in 2011 and 2015. In 2011, I was surprised to find myself on the grid next to the 935 that had won the British GT Championship the previous year.

Ron Goodman, who was friendly with the successful US Porsche racer Vic Skirmants, introduced me to the world of 356 racing. Vic, in semi-retirement, had developed 356s into remarkable little race cars, which he occasionally rented to acquaintances. They were like go-karts to drive—remarkably quick and often faster than 911s. We competed twice in the 356s at Watkins Glen, a terrific track that was once a Formula 1 Championship venue. Geoff Morgan joined us for the second race. In 2015, we had the incredible opportunity to compete in the first Historic event at Indianapolis Speedway, again in the 356s. We used the same infield circuit employed by F1 and MotoGP, which included sections of the banking twice during a lap.

My last Porsche race car was a 991 Cup Car—a fantastic track experience that was easy to drive until you tried matching the lap times of the experts. I sold it during COVID, as my ski travel business was severely impacted for two years, but I’m happy to say it has since rebounded strongly.
