JD: How did you meet Sussie 4?

SM: I met Odin through a mutual friend in Mexico. I had been writing (music) for a while and when the discussions progressed to the idea of collaboration with Cesar and Odin for Sussie 4’s 4th album, I thought here is a great opportunity to work with some guys that are really doing some great work, making the kind of music I want to make. It was an honor. We actually did not physically meet each other till I arrived in GD to record. Up till that point it was just emails.

JD: What’s your craziest story with Sussie 4?

SM: The craziest story for me would be performing live for the first time at Vive Latino. I knew I was bound to make mistakes. I’ve acted in movies with some pretty big names but sometimes you just have to dive off the diving board. We really didn’t have much time at all to prepare before. I know I would do a lot differently now. Of course Cesar and Odin have worked together for years, are pros and amazing live so, for them it was no sweat. But that was a great experience.

JD: What do you think has been the biggest challenge for you?

SM: I think, just learning to trust myself as both as a businessperson and especially an artist… When I do I’m usually freer and more confident.

JD: Would you say you come from a musically inclined family?

SM: My father was a draftsman in the automotive industry and my mother a hairdresser. They are still trying to understand what it is I do.

JD: Musically, who are your biggest inspirations?

SM: Kristy MacColl was/is amazing. Kinnie Starr and Shen. Music from the 60’s and 70’s like The Church, and The Turtles. I love stuff like “Lovely Day” and “Strawberry Letter 23”. More edgy, Roisin Murphy, Monopoly, Sigur Ros. Some bands out of Mexico such as, Bostich, and Blue Lunar Monkey.

There’s a great music scene in Mexico right now.

JD:What do you wish for people to get out of your music?

SM:Enjoyment. Something for themselves.

JD: I know that you have a great list of wonderful songs, but which song do you like to perform most?

SM: I am looking forward to my next performance hopefully with a new album. I have a dance background and have been cast as a dancer in commercials and movies so… I would like to put more movement into the situation with my own music.

JD: What advice would you give to up and coming artists?

SM: It’s a lot more work than it looks. Get use to the idea of doing much of it yourself, especially in the beginning. The greatest thing is the Internet. It’s changed the music world in amazing ways. Sure, piracy and things like that are not good for business but what has been good for the industry is that if you are any good at all… now you can be heard. The gates have been crashed and the gatekeepers are still flogged by it. It use to be you needed to be signed by a big label to do anything big but now it’s all changed. It’s really opened up a whole new world—A music revolution. It’s a very good thing and has given me and other artists who might have otherwise been overlooked a great opportunity.

The beauty of art is that it can be expressed in endless ways. While some artists appeal visually, through paintings, photographs, sculptures, etc., other artists create music, appealing and filling our ears with delicious fusions of sounds, paired intelligently with harmony and melody, This is the case of our dear friend, Suzy Malick, who is no stranger to art, she is in fact considered an active supporter of new talent. Being from Detroit (Michigan, USA), half-Arabic and traveling around the world, Suzy absorbed and learned a deeper appreciation for other cultures, specially making a deeper connection with the Latin culture. Her successful career as a top fashion model, gracefully appearing in the cover of many international magazines, created a strong foundation for her career in music and television. Following her modeling career, Suzy entered the world of feature film and television, backed up by a strong study in dramatic arts. A regular in New York’s fashion circuit, she continues to work in her film career.

In early 2010, her work on a collaboration with Mexican electronic sensation duo from Guadalajara (Jalisco, Mexico) Sussie 4, composed by the musical genius of Odin Parada and Cesar Gudiño, resulted in the premier single “Sunday”. After generating international buzz online, it was released on the “International Sonora” album and went on to earn a nomination for best disco/dance CD at the Indie Awards. The song’s video went into regular rotation on MTV Latin America as well as MTV UK and within the first month of its release, “Sunday” reached #1 on the iTunes charts. The album “International Sonora”, was then awarded Best Latin Dance Album on iTunes for 2010. Suzy then appeared live before 40,000 fans main stage at the most important annual music event in all Latin America, Vive Latino, hosted in Mexico City -what we may consider just a preview of what’s about to come in Suzy’s career.

JD: .How did you become involved with the music genre you play now? Why this genre?

SM: Well, you could call it chill, electronica, digital downtempo, trip hop…it actually has a lot of labels. I consider my style to be more modern lounge. You know in the mid 60’s you had Dean Martin singing “Sway with Me” and the Stones “Mothers little helper”…stuff like that. In that way, its sort of escapist music. I guess I just sort of naturally gravitated towards that.

JD: .How would you describe your music?

SM: Personal, evolving. It could be a dance beat or more lounge like. But I really don’t like to follow any sort of formulaic rule. Anyhow, I’m not trained in that way so I’ve sort of figured it out on my own.

I hope that makes it more interesting. I like interesting music. I try to keep my ears open and I like to use the things I see and hear in life to produce something cool to listen to. It’s a mixture of things really.

JD: What is the first thing you remember singing/performing?

SM: I’m an actor so I’ve been performing for a while… since I was a teenager. As a singer that would be “Dreaming”, a song I wrote for the feature film Heights. We made a video of that.

American sculptor Sean McGinnis was born in 1965 in the plains of Kansas (USA). Based in Paris since 1997, this internationally renowned artist’s work is a concept of sculptures mainly consisting of simple strings and/ or industrially woven ropes articulated to create architectural arches or hybrid forms that use only the existing hanging points of the sites they invest.

The vibrant colors of the strings that form these floating sculptures, tend to score a high contrast with the places where they evolve, whether urban or in the middle of green and luscious nature.

Neither French constructivism, nor English ingenuity, nor Italian luxury, Zambesi, hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, combines all these elements creating its own unique style. Founded in 1979, the designer Elisabeth Findlay set out to propose clothing that evoked and intrigued, embracing the philosophy of individualism, replacing conventions by ironic pragmatism.

Establishing her style from the beginning using a palette of monochromatic colors and futuristic combinations of textures, found in silk jumpsuits and overalls, ballskirts, patchwork suits and one-size-fits -all tunics, proposing pieces that are fresh, elegant and unbelievingly functional.

Scientific and adventurous, textile and accessory designer Tzuri Gueta uses a mixture of technologically advanced and traditional techniques to create pieces that resemble miracles of nature, such as earrings in the shape of morning dew drops, a choker shaped like antelope antlers, a bracelet in the form of a cactus, or a clutch purse resembling coral from the ocean.

His work, a combination of organic and futuristic elements, is featured in the most prominent Haut Couture collections like Mugler, Armani, Dior, Rochas and Givenchy. Based in Paris, just this year, he launched his own jewelry accessories line. Like a scientist he experiments with a number of materials.

As of late, his main passion is silicone, which allows him to create pieces that are virtually optical illusions.

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, in 2002 Tim Van Steenbergen launched his own company in Belgium and in the same year presented his first collection in Paris. Every Delvaux product is made by hand, using traditional leatherworking techniques handed down from generation to generation. There is no assembly line. Many of the tools, which the craftsmen use, have been made by hand themselves.

Born in Bergerac, France, Charlie Le Mindu was a hair styling prodigy at the French Hair Academy, cutting and styling hair from the age of seventeen. In Berlin, he established himself as Resident Hairdresser at night lubs such as White Trash, RIO Club, and Barbie Deinhoff’s. He performed «Live Cuts» in his champagne suite at countless private parties and set up several ensuite salons. The French designer set up his East London flat and hairdressing residencies around the city’s nightspots and developed a regular clientele including Carrie Mundane, the B52s, Adamski,Peaches, and Jodie Harsh. Charlie Le Mindu claims that “The hair is so much more interesting here!’”

In February 2009, Charlie launched his first wig collection at London Fashion Week. His repertoire of clients includes the likes of Lady Gaga, Kap Bambino and Ayumi Hamasaki, to name a few. Having exhibited at the V&A in London and opening the Art Athina fair in Greece, Charlie Le Mindu’s work truly transcends the boundaries of fashion. Charlie currently hosts the hit TV Show Charlie’s Treatment on Konbini.

Born in Kyoto, Japan, Akira Isogawa moved to Australia in 1986 where he studied fashion design at the Sydney Institute of Technology.Seven years later, he already opened his first boutique in Sydney. Winning many awards in Australia, he also presents his collections in Paris, where his work has tbeen warmly received by international fashion critics such as Anna Piaggi and Anna Wintour.

Bright, clear colors in weightless, flowing fabrics like silk, chiffon and the lightest velvets are adorned with exquisite details drawing inspiration from contemporary Japanese design. Translating fabrics into soft, romantic silhouettes, he designs as away for the wearer to express his inner soul.

Originario de Kyoto, Japón, Akira Isogawa se trasladó a Australia en 1986, donde estudió Diseño de Modas en el Instituto de Sydney Technology. Siete años después, abrió su primera tienda en la capital australiana. Al mismo tiempo que gana numerosos premios en Australia, también presenta sus colecciones en París, donde su trabajo ha sido su muy bien recibido por la crítica internacional de la moda, como Anna Piaggi y Anna Wintour.

Quand on mélange certains passions, comme dans le cas de l’art et de la mode, on pourrait espérer la fusion extraordinaire d’idées, émotions, et, en plus, un affichage incroyable. Sans doute, si on ajoute le désir d’aider les autres, les résultats sont inégalables.

On est fières d’annoncer que cette année, Vedôme Luxury, l’exposition professionnelle de dessin reconnu à niveau mondial, celle qui a été le siège présenté par Cara&Co: Synergy of Art and Fashion Exhibition (Cara&Co: Exhibition Synergie de l’Art et de la Mode), aura sa propre présentation avec Portafolio.

Cette année, la Directrice Executive, Rosa Alpert, et le Directeur Artistique, Alexey Oleshov, de Cara & Co, ils ont lié leur passion pour l'art et la mode avec leur passion pour aider les autres au profit de sa fondation, The Sound World (Le Monde du son), qui soutient et prend soin des enfants avec problèmes auditifs dans les pays pauvres.

Cara & Co. a permis à 11 designers de renommée mondiale de créer un total de 21 pièces uniques qui symbolisent respectivement la synergie entre le monde de l'art et de la mode. Pour accomplir le tour du monde, les pièces seront vendues d’une façon privée aux enchères et l’argent sera donné à la fondation de bienfaisance de Cara & Co: The Sound World.

Alexey Oleshov は、発展途上国の盲目の子供への援助をする、彼らが設立した Sound World 財団へのために、はお互いの他人を助けたいという情熱とファッションと芸術への情

レミンデゥそしてデゥベアックス、高級レザー商品のブランドからヴェロニクブランクインホ。

パリでのヴェンドンでの展示会の結果、作品たちはパリ、 ソウル、ベイジンそしてシドニーでの

世界ツアーでもつかわれることになった。世界ツアーの完成の後、展示会での作品は Cara &

CARA CO S Y N E R G Y O F A R T A N D F A S H I O N When combining passions, like the blending of fashion and art, one can expect to experence an amazing fusion of ideas, emotions, and, ultimately, an incredible exhibition. But by adding the desire to help others, the result is beyond extraordinary.

We are proud to announce that this year, the internationally recognized Vedôme Luxury trade show hosted Cara & Co: Synergy of Art and Fashion Exhibition, will have its own feature with Portafolio.

This year, CEO Rosa Alpert and Creative Director Alexey Oleshov of Cara & Co have united their passion to help others and their passion for art and fashion for the benefit of their foundation,The Sound World, which supports deaf children from underdeveloped countries.

Cara & Co gave carte blanche to 11 world-renowned fashion designers to create a total of 21 unique pieces that symbolize, each in their own way, the synergy between art and fashion. Each designer was given the liberty to choose the style, theme, fabrics, shape and color under one condition – each piece should be able to be exhibited cohesively in the museum.

The 11 fashion designers that responded to the challenge under the Artistic Direction of American sculptor Sean McGinnis were: Tim Van Steenbergen, Jean-Paul Knott, Christophe Coppens, Akira Isogawa, Casey Vidalenc, Queene and Belle, Tzuri Gueta, Anne Valerie Hash, Charlie Le Mindu and Delveaux, the luxury leather goods brand by Véronique Branquinho.

After the exhibition continue on to a completing the world auction,

concludes at Vendôme Luxury in Paris, the pieces will world tour in Paris, Seoul, Beijing and Sydney. After tour, the exhibition pieces will be sold in a private with all the proceeds donated to Cara & Co’s charity organization, The Sound World.

C

ontrasts. Black and white. Dark and light. Yes and no.

North and south. Real and surreal...Perhaps the idea of two coexisting opposites coming together to form a contrast may not necessarily be a realistic or logical idea. More so it may be quite improbable. Coping with the idea of having to make yes and no work as one, seems hard to comprehend. The idea of having pitch black darkness and light coexist simultaneously makes even less sense.

Experimenting

with

the

idea

of

coexisting

total

opposites may seem like a science experiment or a graduate psychology thesis. It may be intimidating to

those

of

us,

who

perhaps

aren’t

scientists.

I

know that looking at it from that point, it petrifies me.

(Thank

goodness

psychologist).

I

am

However,

not

nothing

a

scientist is

ever

or

a

really

impossible, with our minds we can create world after world

until

we

make

a

universe

of

greatness.

The beauty of the creative mind, is that it can defy any law of science. It can make clocks fly and melt on branches. It can make a southern Belle suspend 1,000 feet in mid-air while wearing a long vibrant red gown.

It can make one single line continue until it makes a square, a cube, a grid, a house, a skyscraper... well, whatever you want it to be. You can make black and white work beautifully in a striking photograph, or make the South Pole tip ends with the North Pole to create day and night in one single instant, in one single spot,ot all it takes is some inspiration and some imagination.

In this issue, we explored those who made contrasting opposites happen beautifully together. No matter how hard we try, we will never be able to find all the creative minds in the world, yet we are proud of the ones we did get the honor to meet. And with that, welcome

another

wonderful

issue

of

Portafolio
