April 2016 It is that time of year when the shops assess their future, or hand the baton to others. The following shops we say farewell to; Dymocks Midland Gate (WA) , Dymocks Carousel (WA), Dymocks Tuggerah (NSW), Collins Edwardstown (SA), Inbarendi (SA), Books on Puckle (Vic), Booktalk (Vic), Polyester (Vic); and then the stores that are being rebirthed – Reader's Feast (was in the George's Building) – farewell, hello in the new locations on Willam Street and the Abbotsford Convent site. Thesaurus (Brighton) farewell to Luke & Jude – hello to the new owners, Susan and Kate. Also hello to Laura and William at Collins Booksellers Moonee Ponds who have taken on over the Books on Puckle store. Splendid Books open next month in Albury and Bay Life Books in Dunsborough. I know those who are leaving gave it their best; and good wishes to the new stores and new owners – I look forward to meeting you over time. As I comment sometimes we are now headlong into pushing the publishers for the best update on the titles to come this year; hopefully none will drop a last minute ANZAC title in the schedule; (it does happen). Then the process of time allocated to BEA in Chicago, ABA in ACT and the Christmas presentations, it is punishing on our really independent publishers. I form up my notes for these words in under sometimes strange circumstances – like I just accidentally squirted my milk sachet on the guy in seat 14E – I hate that and shudder when someone showers me in that way! The media circus for the books looks better and better all the time; currently we have another Max Markson media campaign – this time to do with a cookbook, Sugar Free Cookbook – the author is from Perth and she will get our Deputy PM Julie Bishop to launch in April. The ABC National media with Harriet Clare is going to really put that series firmly back into consumers hands; we have plenty of stock and

Words from the Wise auction of the jacket image of our new Ned Kelly book; well not quite new as it was written in the 1870’s – so it predates the words of Fitzsimons, Ian Jones and Peter Carey. I just realised I have read all of these books – so “our” Ned could sell 500,000 copies – maybe. The Kelly Gang, or the outlaws of the Wombat Ranges. http://www.nedkellytouringroute.com.au/ destinations/mansfield/ Two updates. The scanned files of those Jackie French YA Science Fiction titles (Children of the Valley series) are now back with the publisher, hopefully the transition of the files will allow us to have physical stock in May. The other is to do with a series of YA UFC fiction titles; these have never been released in print and are written by Jarrah Loh, a world resource on UFC. How this all happened is a long story, so for now we will be aiming at a May release and then a new series with a UFC female contender. Big opportunity with these. Oh, and Ricky Nixon’s book will be another 6 weeks way. You hear all sorts of rumour, innuendo, and then just plain BS as you walk the streets; however the one I heard the other day (like Brown is the new Black) is that the colouring book phase is about to be over taken by a resurgence for Origami books – why not. Lisa Messenger goes from strength to strength with her new book Break-ups & Breakthroughs released in February. These are her best selling titles in Jan/Feb. 9780994310965 Break-ups & breakthroughs 9780994310927 Money & Mindfulness 9780987097460 Daring & Disruptive 9780646913599 Life & Love 9780994310958 Money and Mindfulness (ePub) 9780994310903 Collective 2016 Diary Best wishes DJ

The world probably doesn’t need another book. And while this object you hold in your hands might look like one, it’s so much more. It’s an invitation. And it’s addressed to you. To inspire you to challenge everything, to remind you that you can turn ideas into reality and to present you the opportunity to be part of bold idea that could change the course of history. Chapter One is the story of three kids from Melbourne, Australia with zero experience in business who had an idea and the crazy belief that we all have the power to change stuff. It started with the World Water Crisis (and how to end it) but has developed into an award‐winning consumer goods brand that empowers millions of people to fight poverty with every munch of muesli, sip of water or pump of hand wash. And that’s just the beginning. This is the story of epic proportions by Thankyou co‐founder Daniel Flynn about Thankyou’s gut‐wrenching decisions, wild mistakes and daring moves in business, marketing and social enterprise so far. You’ll laugh at their boldness, cry at their failings and be inspired by their determination. But more than that, you’ll understand that, no matter your walk of life, you too have the power to change stuff.

Global poverty is a big issue that almost every single person cares about. While most of us wish we could make a difference in our everyday lives, it’s not always possible for a range of different reasons. But what if we could funnel the collective millions of dollars we direct towards multinationals through buying everyday consumable products into eradicating global poverty?

A Bit About Thankyou Thankyou is a social enterprise (a business where 100% of profit funds a social outcome) that was started in Australia in 2008 by a group of university students (who’ve grown up a little bit now). Thankyou exists to empower people to change the world through a simple purchase. Thankyou sells over 35 consumer products in three categories - water, food and body care – that are stocked in over 4000 outlets including every major supermarket in Australia. Thankyou challenges multinational companies, with some of its products outselling every global for-profit competitor in respective categories. The success of Thankyou and its sustainable giving model has resulted in the social enterprise being named the ‘future’ and the ‘Apple of the fast moving consumer goods industry’ by industry veterans. To date, Thankyou has given over $3.3 million to projects spanning 16 countries. The company has funded safe water for 182,219 people, hygiene and sanitation programs for 270,378 people and 19.1 million days’ worth of immediate food aid on top of long-term food solutions and over 60,000 meals to local homeless and vulnerable people in Australia. Thankyou’s bold and successful marketing campaigns, The 7-Eleven Campaign and The Coles and Woolworths Campaign, have received support from over 15 celebrities and high profiles as well as international media attention. Thankyou has grown a loyal following including a highly engaged social media community of over 200,000 people and a movement of consumers that support the brand. Throughout 2013 and 2014, Thankyou’s inspirational startup story was told to over 190,000 people through speaking engagements in schools and corporates and to millions of Australians through mainstream media support. Thankyou has been mentioned in the media over 750 times with recent mentions in BRW, Huffington Post, Business Insider, Australian Women’s Weekly and Channel Seven and Channel Ten. To find out more about Thankyou, head to: W: www.thankyou.co F: www.facebook.com/thankyouAUS I: www.instagram.com/thankyouAUS T: www.twitter.com/thankyou_AUS

The Book Concept In 2016, Thankyou will launch its next bold move. It begins with a book, Chapter One, written by co-founder and Managing Director Daniel Flynn. 100% of the profits from the book will fund the next chapter of the Thankyou journey. The book will sit at the centre of a massive crowdfunding campaign, which will include two bold funding targets - the launch of a new product range and Thankyou’s entry into its first international market. The book and crowdfunding campaign will be launched at an epic gala event with 1000 people present, including media, celebrities and high profile individuals. The book, written to inspire everyday people to ‘change stuff’ in their everyday lives will empower consumers to be transformed from mere readers of books into social investors of a global movement for change. The physical aspect of the book is different to usual books, with the spine located at the top of the book – encouraging readers to begin the journey of ‘challenging their thinking’ through merely reading the book.

Publicity Chapter One is to be launched at a gala event, and following that, author Daniel Flynn will be packing books in a warehouse until the funding target of $1.2 million is reached. This will be supported by PR and social media activity. #chapterone.

forage cookbook

This cookbook is a live letter to the state of Victoria. With the valuable support of over 80 top chefs, cooks, restaurants, producers and other food folk sharing their recipes and stories of farm to plate, this book captures a snapshot of the food industry as it is right now; a celebration of excellence and inspiration. Forage has criss-crossed the state of Victoria on an epic 3,000 km road trip visiting the people and places that make this state's culinary scene one of the world's most diverse and exciting. Your copy of Forage has the added benefit of sharing the spoils with local charity Upside Nepal, supporting subsistence farmers to develop their own enterprises that will benefit their remote villages in Nepal. Forage is an initiative born from our time in Nepal, where we were inspired by the strong connection between the subsistence farmers, their food and the land that provides it. We want to share this land to plate connection with the Australian people, and in turn, through partnership with Australian charity Upside Nepal, support village development through agriculture enterprise in Nepal. The profits from Forage Victoria will be split with Upside Nepal with the aim of contributing $100K to incubating social enterprise in Nepal. Look up the definition of ‘to forage’ and you’ll see that it’s meaning is, ‘to search widely for food or provisions.’ Synonyms for foraging might include ‘rummaging’, ‘scouring the countryside’, ‘scrounging’, ‘hunting for’, ‘picking’, ‘to look high and low’ and ‘to leave no stone unturned’, and as you’ll see it is just that the chefs featured in this beautiful book are engrossed in. They may not all be mad enough like me to stand knee deep in a local icy (but reliably pristine) stream harvesting watercress, or to tip toe around suspicious bulls for access to the best crop of stinging nettles. But no matter whether they are harvesting their own plantings, sourcing the best heirloom varieties from a farmer, revising their menus on a daily basis based on produce availability, discussing the best time of year to use beets for borscht, crossing town in search of a rumoured new supplier, sharing the name of (in their opinion) the best purveyor of octopus, or creating a product themselves from the ground up using time-honoured techniques, we all share in a common discourse. It’s always about sourcing or creating the best. - Alla Wolf Tasker AM, Lake House Daylesford Grove

Great Ocean Ducks

205

Jodi and Greg Clarke have published a 164‐page hard cover cookbook with photographer Andy Zakeli that features recipes from the chefs they sell their ducks to. It has some 40 duck recipes from some of Australia's finest chefs ‐ the foreword is by Dan Hunter at the renowned Brae. There are two recipes with pictures from Rob Kabboord, chef and owner of Merricote in Northcote, Melbourne, including a duck charcuterie and a simple dish of duck hearts that was inspired by a beautiful story Rob told them from a time when he was a commis in London. The story and the dishes are part of the book featuring chefs and their ducks.

Author Information

Greg and Jodi Clarke farm free-range Aylesbury ducks on their 16-hectare property overlooking Port Campbell, near the Twelve Apostles and Victoria's Great Ocean Road. They began with 30 ducklings and no idea about what they were doing in 2009. The couple chose the Aylesbury for its historical connections. It is the classic English table duck and was wildly popular in the 19th century. In late 2012 they began rearing Pekins (and feeding them strawberries and other fruits).

Before you next put food into your mouth, spare a thought how it might have been produced. This has enormous health, environmental and animal welfare implications. It may look perfect but the food we eat today is nothing like what it once was. YOUR FOOD: Where food comes from and how it is produced is Australia’s healthy, fresh food shopping guide. It is a unique A‐Z handbook containing detailed descriptions of the origins of popular fresh food items including fruits, vegetables, milk and dairy products, meat, eggs plus fish and seafood. With detailed information on how it was grown, raised or caught, the methods and chemical pesticides used in production, its ethical and animal‐cruelty implications, whether it is sustainable, local and seasonal plus much, much more. Unearthing the secrets of where our food originates, YOUR FOOD: Where food comes from and how it is produced - lifts the lid on Australian food production. Beautifully illustrated with full colour throughout including stunning life-size photography of every food item (including livestock!) YOUR FOOD’s easy-to-read format will allow you to make better informed choices next time you go food shopping. YOUR FOOD: Where food comes from and how it is produced includes: How to buy food and food storage, what’s fresh and in season (and what has been stored since last season), is it organic, free-range and cruelty-free, what insecticides, fungicides and herbicides have been used in its production and what are their health risks? Is it GM-free? Is it from a sustainable seafood source? PLUS: Australian local food shopping guide; A state-by-state guide to all major food production areas in Australia and what is produced near where you live. Local food shopping has never been easier. In this new book, dietitian Ngaire Hobbins unravels the complex science of nutrition and brain health, presenting it in her trademark engaging and easy‐reading style. Eat To Cheat Dementia covers the latest on what can be done to help prevent cognitive decline and boost brain health. But as well Eat To Cheat Dementia reveals the power of eating to maximise vitality, independence and quality of life for anyone living with a diagnosis of dementia, providing sensible, practical eating solutions for every reader. If you want to know where the science of eating to maximise brain health is at, this is the book for you. Eat To Cheat Dementia provides an understanding of the immense amount that food can do to benefit your brain as well as your body to help keep cognitive decline at bay. But as well, if you are living with a dementia diagnosis, or care about someone who is, this book is essential reading. It provides a wealth of information, advice and strategies to help maintain independence and quality in life with enticing, nourishing food, and when additional assistance is required later in the illness, gives sensible, practical solutions for providing food that balances care with sustenance. Eat To Cheat Dementia is an important book: weight loss and malnutrition are common in dementia and greatly reduce the quality of life in those affected. It helps the reader seeking preventive strategies sort fact from fiction and provides practical, common sense solutions for those living with cognitive decline and dementia. Author Information Ngaire Hobbins is a fully qualified and widely experienced dietitian passionate about encouraging people to relish great food in order to get the most out of life. Ngaire has worked in many and varied areas of nutrition, including hospitals and in private practice and spent a number of years within the food industry focusing on developing clear communication between producers and consumers on the food value and qualities of their products. Out of these experiences has grown her deep appreciation of the benefits and pleasures of real food. During her long career, Ngaire has become inspired to counter the poor awareness of the unique nutritional needs of our bodies in our senior years so that we can thrive instead of suffering unnecessary physical and mental frailty and decline. “When you really think about it, pretty much everything you hear about health on radio and TV, in magazines and newspapers and even from lots of health professionals, is aimed at younger adults,’ says Ngaire. “Of course it’s absolutely critical that people do all they can to help themselves live active, healthy lives and that doesn’t change as you get older. But your body changes, and with that your nutritional needs. This is rarely taken into account when messages about health and diets are promoted.” In writing Eat To Cheat Ageing, Ngaire examined the scientific research to get a clear picture of the issues faced by ageing bodies and brains, then combined her clinical experience and skills at translating scientific language into consumer friendly speak. The result is a book that will help older people make the most of life. In this website Ngaire plans to continue to turn a spotlight on issues in health and nutrition for older people to keep visitors informed and up to date with ways to help them enjoy vital, independent lives.

Did you know that what you eat as you move away from your 50s into your later years makes the difference between living a vital independent life and potentially setting yourself up to struggle physically and mentally? Nutritional science proves that ageing bodies have unique needs that are not acknowledged in most public health advice. In fact, following eating advice most appropriate for young adults can be anything from unhelpful to downright dangerous in your later years: it can hinder healing and immunity and hasten dementia and frailty. Ngaire Hobbins is a dietitian specialising in the unique needs of ageing and wrote "Eat To Cheat Ageing" to inform people in their 60s and beyond, as well as anyone in their 50s heading there in the next decade, what ageing bodies really need to stay healthy and independent. This is a book that will empower you to know when to stop listening to health advice that no longer applies to you and help you understand what to eat and do to help, instead of hinder, in the years ahead

ROCKIN AUSTRALIA is a mind tripping visual history through 50 years of Australian rock concert/tour/gig posters. This 3‐volume limited edition is housed in a custom slipcase and includes over 2250 poster images beautifully reproduced over 1271 pages. ROCKIN AUSTRALIA allows the reader a rare glimpse into the music memorabilia collection of author James Anfuso. He has spent the last 30 years putting together the most important historical collection of Australian rock’n’roll posters in the world. These books bring together for the first time many extremely rare and valuable posters like those for the 1966 Rolling Stones tour, the ‘infamous’ 1968 Who/Small Faces tour and the controversial 1972 Led Zeppelin tour. Together his collection has been valued at over 2 million dollars. This ‘hand numbered’ 3‐volume edition is limited to only 666 copies. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to journey through Australia’s rock’n’roll past – perhaps to reignite memories of concerts seen, of bands loved or simply to fantasize about the many concerts or bands you wished you had seen. A must have for both music lovers and rock historians.

Are records making a comeback? The reality is they never went away! Collectors have never stopped seeking out the rare and unusual. But now there is a whole new generation of twentysomethings and thirtysomethings - born in the CD era - who are discovering the romance, the warmth and the value of vinyl. Secondhand records are in plentiful supply as baby boomers downsize. Crate-digging in 2nd hand shops, markets, and garage sales is a great hobby. But what is valuable and what is rubbish? How do you recognise a rare treasure? How important is condition? How can you tell if it is a first pressing? This book is a back-to-basics guide to record collecting . Its stories, trivia and real examples will be informative for the novice as well as the experienced collector. Happy digging!

Author Information John Tait's extensive record collection began in 1974 with Rick Wakeman's 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'. His record vending career began sometime in the 90's when he outbid 500 others for a CD collection that had been confiscated by the Sheriff's office. As stock accumulated, it was time to open a CD, record and book shop in Essendon. John's writing credits include the much loved music biography Vanda & Young, the co‐authored Captain Matchbox & Beyond and his Rock Historian blog. He is a keen gatherer of music trivia and loves visiting record shops around the world.

The memoir of a courageous woman on a quest to find love and places to belong. Accidental Aid Worker is the travel memoir of the adventurous Sue Liu who stumbles into voluntary aid work in the wake of the 2004 tsunami during the civil war conflict in Sri Lanka. She teams up with a tour guide, a Catholic priest and a community of refugees and so begins a ten-year obsession with helping people in need. Through tragic events, Sue meets the larger than life Geraldine Cox and spreads her generosity to help orphaned children in Cambodia. This is a moving and real account of one woman’s drive to survive and support others, while masking battles of her own. Along the way, Sue loses her grip on life and embarks on a harrowing journey through mid-life crisis, disconnection and chronic depression. She is forced to face inescapable truths about herself in order to navigate her way to the woman she really wants to be. Sue shares her most vulnerable moments with warmth and bare honesty, alongside epic travel adventures and quirky tales involving; priests, nuns, a rabbi, terrorist attacks, natural disasters, a tuktuk accident, refugees, orphaned children, surgeries, fishing for marlin and at times, spontaneous singing and dancing with children. This heartwarming and thought-provoking story will make you laugh, bring you to tears, inspire a thirst for travel, a yearning to give back and pause for thought about what really makes us all tick. Thank you for your generous, and indeed very special and personal gift of your biography, Accidental Aid Worker. Indeed, I have just commenced reading the early parts of this epic memoir, which touches many sensitive aspects of your life, with which I can identify. A half‐naked body of a girl is discovered on a driveway in Mt Martha. A young man researching his grandfather’s defection to Australia from the Hungarian Olympic team in 1956 is having trouble with his love life. An old man living alone with his cat discovers hidden clues … Set in Melbourne in the 1950s and the present, this crime novel was inspired by an unsolved murder in 1953. Historically accurate in the details, it blends social commentary with character development and resolution. If you like Rankin’s Edinburgh and Mankell’s Ystad, you’ll love Simpson’s Melbourne. This is a gritty and disturbing work of crime fiction.

Author Information National co‐convenor of Sisters in Crime; Australia University educator; author of ‘The Real Thing in Thirty‐four Stanzas’ published in Swamp Magazine, University of Newcastle (2014); travel memoir Let Sleeping Dogs Lie (2012); All the Good Ones Aren’t Taken about the singles industry (1997); researcher, writer and editor of Building Partnerships. Janice grew up in rural Victoria on a sheep farm. Miles away from friends during weekends and holidays, she spent a lot of time imagining other worlds through the many books she found on the shelves at home and in the shire library, housed in a silent and dusty hall. Perhaps this early life is best described by a passage from her travel memoir, Let Sleeping Dogs Lie. 'I feel a stab of homesickness when I see the sprawling red gums that inhabit the land of my childhood, the place where I learnt how to cook, garden, harvest, preserve, look after animals, read, make things, explore, ride a bike, find solace in my own company'.

This book of poems was written over one intense year of writing, at the B. R. Whiting Studio in Rome during an Australia Council for the Arts Fellowship. While Brophy's poems are, on the one hand, often deeply steeped in this sensate, embodied Roman experience, the particular becomes universal as in all powerful poetry. This is what gives us time is at heart a dance of dualities and their volatile questions, of which the poetry is delicately aware. In this, Brophy exemplifies an ethical, even moral, determination. The work is underlined by love, never sentimentally, both romantic, and for one's fellow humans and creatures.

Author Information This is Kevin Brophy’s seventh book of poetry. His fourteen books range across fiction, essays, criticism and poetry. He holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Melbourne and is now teaching there as a Professor in Creative Writing. These poems were written while he was poet in residence at the Australia Council’s B.R. Whiting Library in Rome. He now shares his time between the inner suburb of Brunswick in Melbourne and the remote desert community of Mulan in Western Australia.

What is a voice? In this book‐length poem, (which starts in a manner reminiscent of Beckett's Company), the isness of voice is its central preoccupation: it is considered from as many different aspects as there are parts to this multiform poem. Highly exploratory, with words sometimes rising from or inspired by selected Renaissance to early Enlightenment wood‐cut engravings, Anatomy of Voice is divided into four Partitions ‐ across which are lyricised the shiftings of the question 'what is a voice', and the poem's speculative and evocative answers. The book is simultaneously warmly personal and scholarly, intimate and learned, a felt meditation created as a tribute to the late Bill Maidment, a teacher whose influence on the author (as it was for many) was life‐changing.

Author Information David Musgrave is a Sydney‐based poet, novelist and publisher. His novel Glissando was shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Award for fiction, and his collection Phantom Limb was awarded the national Grace Leven Prize for Poetry. He founded the independent publishing house Puncher & Wattmann in 2005 and he currently lectures in Creative Writing at the University of Newcastle.

Sixty years ago, the legendary actor James Dean died in an horrific high-speed car crash. His life, full of enormous possibility, was over in an instant. All the promise of youth and genius ended on a sun-bleached American highway in 1955. But what if…? What if James Dean didn’t die in his Porche Spyder racing car? What if he lived to change what we think of as ‘history’? In this special edition of his critically acclaimed novel The Rebel, best-selling author Jack Dann gives James Dean a second chance: a chance to change the cultural and political landscape of America. The Rebel: Second Chance is a wild, almost hallucinatory ride through America’s culture of the 50s and 60s. Here is all the glamour, danger, pathos, and promise that was America. Here is America through the looking glass: a time when James Dean came into his own… a time when he lived fast and furious… a time when he ran with Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, and the Kennedys. A time of danger, dissipation, and, yes, even hope. But this is more than just another edition of a critically lauded novel. The Rebel: Second Chance is the ‘compleat’ novel. It contains new chapters and story lines: adding up to an extra 135,000 words! This is the author’s original vision, which Satalyte Publishing are proud to publish in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of James Dean’s death. Author Information Jack Dann is a multi-award winning, and best-selling American author best known for his science fiction. An editor and a writing teacher, who has lived in Australia since 1994. He has published over seventy books, in the majority of cases as editor or co-editor of story anthologies in the science fiction, fantasy and horror genres. He has published nine novels, numerous shorter works of fiction, essays and poetry and his books have been translated into thirteen languages. His work, which includes fiction in the science fiction, fantasy, horror, magical realism and historical and alternative history genres, has been compared to Jorge Luis Borges, Roald Dahl, Lewis Carroll, J.G. Ballard and Philip K. Dick. Since his move to Australia, he has become a major influence and much respected figure in the speculative fiction field in Australia. He has frequently attended conventions, as guest of honour, speaker and panelist, and has played an active role in encouraging the development of the field, including running and contributing to seminars and workshops on writing, such as Clarion South. He has also raised the profile of Australian writers by publishing anthologies of their work. He was co-editor (with Janeen Webb) of World Fantasy Award winning Australian anthology Dreaming Down-Under, which Peter Goldsworthy called “the biggest, boldest, most controversial collection of original fiction ever published in Australia.” More recently, Dann edited Dreaming Again, a second anthology of Australian fantasy and speculative fiction, which was released in Australia in July 2008. The collection includes a number of stories produced by graduates of the Clarion South workshops and a mix of new and well known Australian writers. Strong, big‐hearted and Hollywood handsome, Vincent Healy carries the pride of his large Brisbane family on his muscular shoulders when he becomes a soldier and is sent to multiple war zones. His letters from Japan and the Korean front line keep his mother sane as she endures endless hardship to protect and provide for her other nine children during World War II and the Cold War years. After Vince is killed in action, his mother embarks on a harrowing journey of discovery. This fascinating non‐fiction book explores untold stories from WWII and the Korean and Vietnam Wars and delves into working class life in the suburbs of Brisbane in a compassionate but unsentimental narrative. It describes the experiences of soldiers on the ground in Australia's Asian theatres of war and reveals how they viewed their role in these struggles. It stirringly reveals the sometimes troubled life of Vince Healy's family back home, and the harrowing journey his devastated mother takes to find his grave. Passage to Pusan fills a vacuum in our understanding of life experiences that were duplicated in many families across Australia during this volatile period of our history.

During a diverse career she has worked around Australia and around the world as a journalist, columnist, foreign correspondent and editor, and as a media executive. This book contains tips and hints for anyone who is new to preparing and cooking food, as well as a refresher for those who have been cooking for years. Parents can use this simple, step‐by‐step guide when teaching their children to cook, and those with English as a second language will benefit from the clear presentation and easy‐to‐follow tips on keeping safe from food poisoning. Author’s Note The inspiration for this booklet came about through wanting to teach my daughters to be safe with food. Safety can come in many forms and this book is intended to direct the safe use of food handling. It has taken me many years to obtain the confidence to finally put my knowledge into a resource that others can use. Food handling is not complicated; it is common sense, but we all need to be reminded to be sensible on occasion.

As a tribute to the memory of the ANZACs of the Gallipoli Campaign, Reader’s Digest has created a commemorative portfolio of 21 prints. This carefully selected collection includes recruitment posters calling upon Australians and New Zealanders to join the war effort and paintings of the ill-fated landing, the Gallipoli battlefields, life in the trenches, and the wounded in hospital. Photographs of bravery medals awarded during the First World War are also included. The paintings are by Australian and New Zealand war artists such as Horace Millichamp Moore-Jones, George Coates and Frank Crozier, all of whom saw active service in the First World War, as well as modern artists such as Sidney Nolan and Clifton Pugh for whom the ANZAC legend became an inspiration. Printed on high-quality paper, the prints are stored in a beautifully designed, high-quality, durable portfolio which features a purple ribbon printed with the words ‘Lest We Forget’. The ribbon makes it easy to lift the prints from the portfolio. The prints can be kept in the box, or framed to put on your walls. Key Sales Points - The Centenary Commemorative Prints collection is a tribute to the Australians and New Zealanders who gave their lives to the brutal and bloody Gallipoli campaign of 1915. - The collection is a visual history that provides insight into the forging of the ANZAC spirit. - The portfolio features five-colour printing with metallic ink, silver foil and embossing. The Anzacs: 100 Years On in Story and Song is a unique contribution to the commemoration of the centenary of the Anzacs. Ted Egan weaves personal stories and songs into a highly readable history of the Anzacs and the two nations, with amusing anecdotes and tales of great courage and ingenuity serving to leaven somewhat the brutal truth exposed, of a tragic and senseless war. The soldiers, nurses, politicians, wives, and the mothers who lost their sons, or welcomed them home severely damaged, all feature in this book and its songs.

Australia and New Zealand Voices of the First World War

The book commences with a discussion of the policy issues as to whether Australia needed submarines and then the decision to buy AE1 and AE2. It then goes through their coming to Australia, the tragic loss of AE1 in New Guinea on 14 September 1914 and the bravery and daring of the AE2 crew in penetrating the Dardanelles on Anzac Day in 1915. The history then goes on to deal with the J‐Class submarines that came to Australia in 1919, the first Oxley and Otway (which went to the RN in the

The First World War was an unprecedented conflict that reshaped the global political landscape and modern attitudes to warfare, valour and patriotism. And for the fledgling nations of Australia and New Zealand it was yet more: the cauldron in which their identities were forged, the international stage on which they first performed and drew praise, the foundation of many of their institutions and traditions. Over 400,000 Australians served in the military during the First World War. Of these, over 60,000 men lost their lives and another 137,000 were wounded. This had a massive impact on the young Australian nation with a population of just a few million. In each Australian state battalions were formed which became closely associated with men of that state or region. In this way the military history of most parts of Australia can be readily traced. The Northern Territory, however, was too small to have its own unit. Indeed there was not

When the Pacific war began it was a case of "when not if" Darwin would be attacked. But nobody could have predicted the extraordinary scale and ferocity of the 19 February 1942 raid. A massive strike force, blooded at Pearl Harbor just weeks before, hit Darwin in the biggest Japanese air attack ever in the South Pacific. Since then, generations of Australians have been drawn to the stories and folklore of the Darwin action. But facts have blurred and mythology has thrived. What of the warning that never happened? Australia's first submarines, AE1 and AE2, entered Sydney Harbour in time to join the celebration of Empire Day 24 May 1914 after a voyage from Britain that The London Times declared: 'manifestly the most remarkable yet performed by a submarine' ‐ 83 days, 60 of which were spent at sea. Australians were fascinated by their submarines and proud that their young navy was bravely at the forefront of such technology. A Will to Live

War is such a nightmare. It's hard to believe any war can retain a positive aura for decades. Yet the vast conflict in the Pacific is a shibboleth for Australian politics to this day. Politicians in particular use its appeal to legitimize modern wars. Tom O'Lincoln's book questions every aspect of this syndrome. He argues that the Pacific War was an imperialist one on both sides, that the west cannot claim the high moral ground, and that wartime Australia was riven with class and other social conflicts. His aim is to challenge an Australian national myth.

Ella's world hits rock bottom as her stepmother and stepsisters go to the Royal Ball without her, leaving her depressed and alone. Falling into a deep trance by the fire, Ella's mind floods with realisations of how her treatment of herself and others contributes to her struggle. This is the beginning of a profound metamorphosis that sees a meek and timid girl move into wisdom and power as a young woman. Ella ends up at the ball - not because of a fairy godmother waving a wand, but because she discovers the magic that comes from within. Cinderella's Secrets is a remarkable journey of a girl who learns the art of reinventing oneself to reclaim self-worth. She becomes empowered to make her precious dreams come true. This twist on the classic story of Cinderella shows how we can move beyond exploitation, bullying and disillusionment by becoming aware of the personal need for respect and dignity. Join Ella on this journey where her innermost thoughts are revealed as she harnesses her inner wisdom and moves into a new life filled with love and abundance.

Author Information

As a young boy; war, racism, bullying and low confidence were obstacles that impacted me personally. In my teenage years, I had a lot to be grateful for, but I was very confused about the cruelty and lack of common sense in the world. I had also become someone who needed to have everyone approve of me and this proved draining and costly throughout my young adult life. I wrote this story to show that the magic within us is real. We have the power to change our destiny simply by removing misguided ideas about our identity and replacing them with ideas that restore our worth and capability. My wish is that Cinderella’s Secrets becomes a spark that initiates empowering and healing conversations between us. My next wish would then be that it can also help improve the way we raise our future generations so that they are better equipped to handle setbacks, are able to thrive, and in doing so, are able to help create a better world. NSW Author From Bethie Gold, author of Lucy Stands on Her Principal. "Moonless Night is a masterpiece of vivid color and imagery that will leave the reader breathless and craving more! Alana and Christian are an unforgettable couple and their love story will live on forever in the reader's memory!" Something got stuck in her throat. It felt like her heart was being pressed so hard she could not breathe. In a split second, the voice she just heard so deep, velvety, and beautiful was so familiar. It was the voice she had been longing to hear for the past ten years. Her breathing might have stopped, but her heart said, "It is him!" The minute seemed like an eternity....

Love is the very food of life or the death of it. Alana's life changed forever the night she learned the dark and seductive truth of blood and those who crave it. So far, she has managed to keep the secret from her mother, but her increasing involvement with the immortals has brought many things into her life. But the price she must pay for the thrill of an intoxicating romance with Christian may be higher than she can bear. Her life now is tinged with fear and danger, as well as a love that could span the centuries. Desperate after being hunted by the hideous Restless, Alana accepts the invitation from the ancients of the Other Forest. In their protection lies her only hope for survival, but that hope is short-lived. The ancients need her help. The more willing Alana is to help the ancients, the more she is drawn into their lives and terrors. Soon, she will learn the mystery of her own ancestry, and that knowledge will haunt her. Alana is given a dangerous task on the White Mountain, a realm of dark forces where she battles both life and death. Only time will tell whether the Restless and the renegade vampires that allied with the Dark Forest will be able to stop Alana's quest. With his immortal powers distorted by the dark forces, Christian may not be able to protect Alana from the wrath of the witch or himself from the murderous intention of a rival.

At night we sleep and dream. Some dreams we remember, and some we forget. Yet, all that we see or have seen is but a dream within a dream. Christian and Alana left the Kings Aqua Isle to travel over the seas indefinitely, away from the current catastrophe that has seemed to take over Alana's life. What happiness they have is cut short by another unfavourable surprise. The couple are oblivious to the fact that this trip is one that they will never forget, because there is more adversity along the way that only the gods can help. Once again, Alana is tested, and this time she is to travel completely alone. Her task is to solve the mystery of her recurring dream where her life is in danger and no one can come to aid her. Without love, is without life. This incontestable story of eternal love for immortals, for Alana, Christian and Adrian, will restore its promises; heal the angers, heartaches and hates, to those who carry pain in their soul.

The original, large format editions of Australian Bush Creatures have now been through 8 reprints with over 12,000 copies in print. This standard format paperback edition in bookshelf friendly format of 300 x 230 mm was the result of many book trade requests. From Abalone to Zebra Finch, and the hundreds of creatures in between, this delightfully crafted book explores Australia's amazingly varied wildlife shown in its natural habitat. Over 400 land, sea and air-born creatures are organised alphabetically using a mixture of common, scientific and aboriginal names. Each A-Z plate also explores Australia's varied landscapes, both natural and introduced. Every page is a journey of discovery for the reader, with many animals as difficult to instantly recognise here, as they are in the bush. To help locate and identify all the bush creatures depicted, informative plates follow the main A-Z sections and form a visual appendix that will have the reader cross referencing for years to come. Australian Bush Creatures trade edition is thoroughly researched and revised, with every creature meticulously illustrated and placed in its usual habitat. It is , as the illustrator describes it, a window into the world's second largest eco-system that will awake a curiosity and love for the extraordinary diversity of the Australian environment and its inhabitants. An A-Z of Australian Bush Creatures is also a stunning showcase of the artistic skills, imagination and passion for Australian wildlife of Myke Mollard. This wonderful book is destined to become a classic of its kind and a treasured part of any child's library.

Author Information Myke Mollard is a multi talented illustrator, author, mural artist and graphic designer. He has already established a successful career in design, advertising and marketing, and is now pursuing his passion for story telling, both visual and with words. In addition to his superb gifts as a painter and draftsman, Myke has also developed a full range of computer generated graphic skills and he combines all of these elements in his work. Myke takes his inspiration equally from a deep understanding of the Australian bush and its creatures , a thorough knowledge and affection for the tradition of Australian illustrators, and his love of CGI animation, comic book illustration and even graphic novels.

As a young primary teacher, she married a cattle grazier then lived and worked at schools and properties over rural Queensland. 'The animals and creatures of The Magical Kingdom are waiting for you. They have beautiful gifts that they wish to share with you...' Follow the path through the Enchanted Forest and discover the magical gifts of strength, transformation, wisdom, healing grace and cohesion, as you are guided by the lanterns inside.

Author Information Sandie Bouton spent her childhood surrounded by animals and creatures, both real and fantastical, and was continually told that she was “off with the fairies” and had an overactive imagination. Sandie continued her love of animals and mystical creatures, especially the unicorn, into her adult life. It was then that the first book in the ‘My Magical Kingdom’ series was conceived in the form of Unicorn Gifts. Sandie works in children’s mental health and has used her love of igniting a child’s imagination to facilitate counselling and guided meditation for children. Sandie continues to happily nourish and embrace her inner child. Illustrator Information Grace Chen is a young illustrator and student residing in Sydney. Her days are spent working at ‘If U Like ART’ studio in Brookvale, studying Media Arts at UNSW Art and Design, and spending time with her friends. She favours using colourful mediums such as acrylics, watercolours, digital media and colour pencils, to create soft, yet lively illustrations. She hopes to continue improving her art, and own a cat or two in the future.

Taste the culinary delights of Kembla Heights and sip tea for two in Jamberoo? Follow the bush tracks that criss‐cross the mountain range, or watch the horses race at Kembla Grange? Author Information Sean Williams is a sixth generation Illawarrior, born and bred. As a child, he grew up on the northern side of McCauley’s Hill in the coastal town of Thirroul. Sean now lives in Tullimbar with his wife, Linda.

John Simpson, aka John Kirkpatrick, aka the Man with the Donkey, was a hero of the Gallipoli campaign, though he never fired a shot in anger. He was an Englishman, yet he was typical of the young Australians who set out on a great adventure in 1915... and never came back. He was a larrikin, didn't like bosses and never had a permanent job. But when the going got tough, he was the sort of bloke you would like to have beside you.

Thanks to Fred, well over a million people who were blind are able to see. He gave sight to the blind in far away places such as Nepal, Eritrea and Vietnam, but it was his unselfish commitment to the eye health of Australian Aborigines that first made us sit up and take notice. Australian of the Year in 1990.

Think what you like about her voices, but Joan was in all ways a sensitive, courageous, generous young lady. After several of her victories, the English were out to get her, and they made it plain that she could expect no mercy from them. Her own king, Charles VII didn't seem too fussed about her fate.

Lost in A Strange Land; The Adventures of Willamena Wombat is the first book in a trilogy that relates the adventures of four unique Australian animals lost in an English forest. The stories cover the interaction between the unique animals of both countries, who, while very different, live in a similar manner. When Willamena Wombat discovered that she and three of her friends, Katie Koala, Kelly Kangaroo & Penny Possum were being sent to a Zoo in London she was nervous; and sad at leaving her other friends. She soon forgot her sadness when their cages accidentally fell out of the back of a van during their transfer to the London Zoo. They were lost in an unfamiliar and scary English forest. Searching for food in the dark forest, she detected the scent of an unfamiliar animal, and ran for her life with the animal in pursuit. There was no safe wombat burrow to hide in here. Willamena found herself at the mercy of a strange animal that came to her rescue. Can she trust this animal? How will she escape?
