Words from Dennis I had my first Costco experience this month and it was an eye opener as to how we survive in such a small market place. The publishers have to find markets for their authors and we have to find “content” that is not on those shelves. To see Peter FitzSimons and Christos Tsiolkas at the less 55% mark makes me on one hand content that new consumers are being bought into the printed book reading experience at the price of an eBook – yet on the other hand conflicted as the other end of town has to sell those lead titles at twice the price. Somehow an independent distributor has to make their Australian content as desirable as those big houses that have their books on sale at so many price points. I have tried for years and am not about to ease up on this – more later. I had a nice thing happen recently where our personal book collection (some of which I have not seen since the 1980’s) is being transported home at the rate of one carton per month – I have two pallets of these treasures. From the first box two books came to me with special messages; firstly the Bob Ansett biography of the mid 1980’s and the other by Howard Fast, “Spartacus.” The Ansett story in a way was the start of my evolution toward what I do today – Bob took to the speaking circuit to do with his passion for customer service – I used to sit in the front row at those events and fervently considered how my then employer could use my extended knowledge, backed up by reading the Tom Peters and Robert H. Waterman book “In Search of Excellence” and almost every other book on the subject. I decided to send a message to Bob about how he helped me and was delighted when he responded to say (inter alia) he was involved in some oral history work with the National Library of Australia. The other book was a first edition of the Howard Fast book and it has a resonating introduction as follows; Authors note to the American Edition Readers who may wonder at the absence of a publisher’s imprint in America are informed that this book was published by the author. This was made necessary when he learned that no commercial publisher, due to political temper of the times, would undertake the publication or distribution of the book. Its publication was made possible by hundreds of people who believed in the book and bought it in advance of publication, so that money would be forthcoming to pay for its printing. The author wishes to thank these people with all his heart. He is also most grateful to the many people who helped with the preparation of the manuscript, with the editing of it,

and with the design and manufacture of the book. He hopes that for some future edition, at a time when it would not subject them to danger and reprisal, to be able to name these people and extend personal thanks to each in turn. - Howard Fast, Spartacus From an edition printed for Joseph Waters – 360 Collins Street, Melbourne 1952 (Amazingly I read this at the same time as watching the “Persons of Interest” series to do with Australians and ASIO surveillance.) Back to those books that could be Bookseller Choice Awards that will be discovered, curated, read and advocated. First is the Howard Goldenberg “Carrots and Jaffas,” ISBN 978192500012. Having read his powerful previous work “Raft” I was drawn to this new book; it is exceptional and worthy of reading and selling. Howard wraps some truths about our history into at times a chilling story which can be read on many levels. His beliefs are visible in the story as well. It is contemporary yet deals with the stories of our land. Read it, recommend it. The other is a book that only came to us recently “The Tainted Trial of Farah Jama” by Julie Szego, ISBN 9780987381149. The front cover blurb includes “following in the tradition of Joe Cinque’s Consolation, a great story about a terrible injustice.” I read this wonderful Helen Garner story and wondered at the profound ability of that story teller. I started reading the pdf of this new book last night and will finish it before I complete any other book I am reading. Like Goldenberg’s work these stories have to be explored and presented to the readers in Australia. One book that the Julie Szego brings back to mind was the Frits Maaten book; “Justice for Jamie - The Mistaken Incarceration of Jamie Koeleman”. According to Frits the book did help Jamie to be eventually released after 10 years. A side story was that I wanted that book to be called “The Wrongful Incarceration of Jamie Koeleman” but the legals overruled. Good Reading DJ

April 2014 New Title Releases Carrots and Jaffas tells the story of two red‐headed identical twins whose oneness is ruptured when one of them is kidnapped. Their startling intimacy is both a strength and a fault line in their being, and once separated, their individuality emerges. In the course of this exhilarating domestic tale set in Melbourne and the Flinders Ranges, the reader encounters the twins' parents ‐ emotional, scripture‐quoting Luisa and calm Bernard - as well as two remarkable storytellers, Doc, an eccentric outback doctor and Greta, an Aboriginal elder. Trauma is followed by recovery through the unexpected agency of story and 'country' (in the Australian Aboriginal meaning of that term).

About the author Howard Goldenberg is a doctor, writer, marathon runner and Olympic torch bearer. He has written two non‐fiction books, My Father's Compass (2007) and Raft (2009). This is his first novel. With his customary gusto, Howard Goldenberg continues his investigation into what it means to be born into the unique and ancient landscape of Australia when your spiritual tradition - in his case, Orthodox Judaism - comes from somewhere else. Martin Flanagan

Every year for over a decade Goldenberg, a white middle‐aged doctor, has spent numerous periods working as a relieving doctor for Aboriginal communities in remote places. On these visits he has observed and recorded Aboriginal Australians lives without resorting to simplification or glib solutions. Among his true stories we meet psychotic Elijah who believes he is Satan's boss and cannot die; a dehydrated baby whose mother gambles away money for food; an old lady who receives a gashed head while fending off a thief stealing her money ‐ her husband. In the midst of tragedy, suffering and moral ambiguity, these stories also tell of cultural richness and common humanity. Goldenberg writes: 'Aboriginal Australians are not at peace. They are variously unwell, underfed, overfed, afflicted excessively by our lifestyle diseases, confused by our drugs and drink, endowed with income but not with work, living in sickening poverty in paradisiacal places; and distracted from their serious cultural business by the trappings of our serious cultural emptiness.

Howard Goldenberg uses his magical story‐telling skills in 'My Father's Compass' to record and celebrate the long and fruitful life of a man with many roles: healing the sick, growing olives, sailing the seas, harvesting foreskins, serving synagogues and raising his brood of difficult children. Myer, Howard's father, was a rare combination of dinkum Aussie and devout Jew. This memoir ‐ poignant, entertaining and at times hilarious ‐ will evoke tears and laughter, grief and joy. A book to be treasured. 'Howard Goldenberg writes with verve and humour. He also writes with deep compassion. It is this unusual marriage of qualities which makes a rare and valuable witness to our times' Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

'It began to gnaw at him, at first an inkling, then an obsession: Farah Jama was truly innocent. Sonnet (Associate Crown Prosecutor) decided then that he didn't want to grant Jama a re-trial. He wanted to deliver him an acquittal.' In the style of literary non-fiction comes a compelling, true story that will appeal to mystery, crime and "CSI" aficionados and anyone interested in justice for all in the midst of cultural diversity. 0n 21st July 2008, 21-year-old Somali, Farah Jama was sentenced to six years behind bars for the rape of a middle-aged woman as she lay unconscious in a Melbourne nightclub. Throughout the trial Jama had maintained his innocence against the accusations he committed such a predatory, heinous crime. But the Prosecution had one 'rock solid' piece of evidence that nailed the accused-his DNA. Nearly 18 months after Jama's incarceration, his conviction was overturned when a mother's profound faith in her son's innocence, a prosecutor's tenacious pursuit of truth and justice and a defence lawyer's belief in his client, brought forth revelations that overturned one of the worst miscarriages of justice in Victorian legal history. When journalist and lawyer, Julie Szego, set out to explore how a travesty of such magnitude could occur, she assumed she could tell the tale with journalistic detachment, delivering judgment from on high. Instead, she found an intriguing and confronting story about the heartache of migration and the trials of integration, cultural taboos and gender wars, and the unseen prejudice that casts its spell over even the most enlightened minds. Farah Jama's story made her question the wisdom of relying exclusively on DNA evidence as proof of guilt, and it challenged her long-held belief that the justice system was vacuum-sealed in reason. About the Author Julie Szego began her career as a lawyer before she switched to journalism. She spent 12 years at The Age newspaper where she held various roles, including social affairs reporter, senior writer, leader writer and fortnightly columnist. During her time at the paper, she wrote a number of highlyacclaimed pieces to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, investigated the cultural divide between the inner-city and the outer suburbs as part of an award-winning series on Melbourne, and wrote a profile of the Somali-Dutch-American feminist activist, Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She wrote a monthly column for The Australian Jewish News for seven years, contributed to a book of essays on Australian Jewish culture and edited and interpreted her father's 2001 memoir, Two Prayers to One God. She currently teaches university courses in writing and journalism. The Tainted Trial of Farah Jama is her first book. Unputdownable. A shocking true-life story that reads like a nightmare dreamt up by Kafka; a complex, cautionary tale that should be required reading for all law students, forensic scientists, and police cadets. Peter Goldsworthy AM, award-winning writer and poet A fascinating account of what can go wrong if the presumption of innocence is just a catch-cry. This book shows how dangerous it is when DNA evidence is allowed to trump common sense. I did not know of this trial until I read the book: I could not wait to find out how it went so wrong. The DNA evidence made no sense; the verdict seemed irrational. The result was a terrible injustice. To everyone. - Julian Burnside AO QC, human rights and refugee advocate. High quality journalism may have fallen away in our newspapers, but Julie Szego demonstrates its enduring vitality in this story of a grievous injustice redressed. She reveals in painstaking detail not only the various factors that, together, resulted in Farah Jama's conviction for rape, but also the complexity of his Somali culture striving to assert itself on Australia's multi-cultural stage. This is a book that deserves a very long shelf-life. - Robert Hillman Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

April 2014 New Title Releases The Ugly Australian Underground documents the music, song writing, aesthetics, lives and struggles of 50 of Australia’s most innovative and creatively significant bands and artists at the creative peak of their careers. The book provides a rare insight into the most ‘happening’ cult music scenes in Australia. The author, Jimi Kritzler is both a journalist and a musician and is personally connected to the musicians he interviews through his own involvement in this music sub culture. The interviews are extremely personal and reveal much more than any interview granted to street press or blogs. The interviews deal with not only the music and song writing processes of each band but in some circumstances their struggles with drugs, the death of band members and involvement in crime. The book is complimented by previously unpublished photographs of all the bands interviewed.

The Australian underground scene in the last five years has been heralded not only in Australia but also in Europe and particularly America. Known as the “Australian Invasion” in America, many of the bands interviewed in this book have received a great deal of hype and press in America with many of the bands signing to American record labels. Bands featured in the book like The Drones, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Royal Headache, Uv Race, Circle Pit, HTRK, Lost Animal, Oren Ambarchi, Total Control, Witch Hats, Deaf Wish, Blank Realm, New War, Holy Balm, Fabulous Diamonds, The Garbage and The Flowers, Straight Arrows, xNoBBQx, Naked on the Vague, Kitchens Floor and My Disco are all on American record labels and have all toured America at least once. Eddy Current Suppression Ring even lent their song ‘Memory Lane’ to an American telecommunications company advertisement, which was played repeatedly during the Super Bowl. Whilst that may indicate the influence of the band in America at the more mainstream end of the spectrum, at the other end, Eddy Current Suppression Ring are a culturally significant and revered underground band both in Australia and America who play to thousands of people at any given show. The bands in this book have dedicated fan bases both in Australia and America that recognise that this crop of bands are the most creatively important in the Australian music scene today. These are the bands that will be remembered in twenty years for having created seminal records. Already The Drones and Eddy Current Suppression Ring have won The Music Prize as well as both being named in the “100 Best Australian Albums of All‐Time.”

IT WAS A MISSION IMPOSSIBLE On 25 April 1915 — t h e day the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli Lieutenant Commander Dacre Stoker set out as captain of the Australian submarine AE2 on a mission to breach the treacherous Dardanelles Strait with the intention of disrupting Turkish supply lines to the isolated Gallipoli peninsula. Facing dangerous currents, mines and withering enemy fire, Stoker and his men succeeded where British and French submarines had come to grief. Stoker’s achievement meant much in military terms, and even more emotionally in boosting the morale of embattled Allied troops. But what was proclaimed at the time as ‘the finest feat in submarine history’ has since sunk into oblivion. Few Australians even know their country had a submarine at Gallipoli, much less that it achieved daring feats, torpedoed an enemy craft, and possibly played a pivotal role in Anzac troops staying on the beachhead for eight months. Now, finally, Stoker’s Submarine tells the story of a remarkable naval hero and the men under his command. And AE2 herself, still lying intact on the floor of the Sea of Marmara, is celebrated as the most tangible relic of Australia’s role at Gallipoli, the crucible of nationhood.

April 2014 New Title Releases Australia’s first submarines, AE1 and AE2, entered Sydney Harbour in time to join the celebration of Empire Day 24 May 1914 after a voyage from Britain that The London Times declared: ‘manifestly the most remarkable yet performed by a submarine’ – 8 3 days, 60 of which were spent at sea. Australians were fascinated by their submarines and proud that their young navy was bravely at the forefront of such technology. Britain declared war against Germany on 4 August 1914 and the British Admiralty despatched the Australian fleet to capture German New Guinea and destroy the German Pacific Fleet. On 14 September AE1 left Rabaul Harbour, with orders to patrol east of Cape Gazelle, and was seen off Duke of York Island in St George’s Channel. Then AE1 simply disappeared. This was the first loss of a military unit during WWI and the beginning of a terrible war for Australians. An ensuing search found no trace, and for the families of the 35 officers and men onboard AE1 life would never be the same. The Mystery of AE1: Australia’s Missing Submarine and Crew traces the beginnings of Australia’s navy and searches for answers to the questions that continue to be asked: Who or what contributed to the loss of Australia’s first submarine? What killed the crew of AE1? Where do they lie? And why has Australia neglected them and their descendants?

'It took only three days to fall in love with Rome. Like all infatuations, I expected it to wear off. I decided that I would leave when I no longer noticed the Coliseum. I am still waiting.' Twenty years ago, Bronte Jackson won an airline ticket that thrust her into the heart of the Mediterranean. Recently separated, made redundant and evicted from her home, Bronte spent six months recovering in Greece and spending her redundancy package, before making her way to Rome. Roman Daze: La Dolce Vita for All Seasons is a book about living a personal and continuously surprising adventure. It's about following your heart and what it's like to live among people who continuously use theirs. In Roman Daze, Bronte Jackson describes how the seasons, food, family, landscape, rituals and history combine to create and explain the Italian lifestyle and why, from the outside, it looks like la dolce vita.

'My first exposure to the idea that Australians could actually make films themselves came from this time. It came from the Wharfies Film Unit with these extraordinary documentaries on the life of wharfies, which I knew off by heart because I used to screen them night after night as a part of my party and projectionist duties. I think it was quite an important stage in the sequence of events that got the film industry up and running again. But it’s not recorded anywhere, it’s not written about, it’s not understood.' April 2014 New Title Releases When Melbourne hosted the Olympic Games in 1956 the equestrian sports were held in Stockholm because Australia's quarantine restrictions prevented the entry of horses for the competition. In those days stockmen rode horses and those who rode for pleasure rode like stockmen ‐ the classical riding style and dressage were the province of a small minority in the riding community. The first Australian eventing team managed 4th place and in doing so lit the fuse of the sport back home. One keen 30‐year‐old observer who had missed out on selection for the team was Graham Parham, known as Kanga for his role as a stuntman in the film Kangaroo ‐ and he decided that if Australia was to take this sport seriously South Australia needed to have a three day event. Travelling to Melbourne in 1957 to compete in his first three day event, Kanga resolved to create one in his state. He chose his home town of Gawler, a rather unpreposing town trapped between its country origins and its city aspirations but with most of the required facilities for the event. After the required support and funds were marchalled, the first event was run in 1959 and by 1966 Gawler had a formidable reputation, having hosted the Sixth World Three Day Eventing Championship in 1986. This is the story of the event and some of the people ‐ some famous, some slightly infamous and some completely unknown ‐ who contributed to the success of Gawler, not only as a producer of champions but as a centre for learning the art of riding. As well there were times surrounding each event over 37 years for telling yarns and kicking up of heals.

This book is a wonderful insight into how eventing developed in Australia through the Gawler 3DE. It was at Gawler that the groundbreaking changes to the restrictive quarantine regulations for the world championships in 1986 enabled international horses to come to Australia, which made possible the hosting of equestrian sport at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Redaing about the pioneers of the sport who frequented Gawler makes me feel very fortunate indeed to have had the privilege of knowing and being part of that special time in Australian eventing history. ‐ Andrew Hoy OAM

April 2014 New Title Releases The Incidental Muslim is an honest, witty and heartfelt collection of columns and new musings by writer Amal Awad. Growing up in Australia as a hybrid identity (Arab‐Australian‐Muslim), Amal has unique insights on career, life, love and feminism. A passionate moviegoer and TV buff, she also considers her love of storytelling and how Hollywood just can’t get their portrayals of Muslims right. More specifically, she bemoans the lack of the incidental Muslim – t h e character who just happens to be a Muslim, rather than the usual three Cs: cab drivers, convenience store owners or crackpots. Praise for The Incidental Muslim “Despite what the title may suggest, The Incidental Muslim is a privileged insight into the life of, yes – a Muslim woman. Snapshots of the author’s life, from childhood to student and now a writer, endear us to a world that turns out to be unmistakably familiar. Such is the uniqueness of Amal Awad’s voice: it actually represents the women oftoday, whether they are Muslim or not.” – Liana Rosnita, editor, Aquila Style

About the Author Amal Awad is a writer, author and journalist. An Arab- Muslim Australian, Amal frequently writes and speaks about issues of society, religion and popular culture. She has addressed festivals, universities, youth groups and community organisations, and has appeared on national radio, including RN Life Matters and The Drawing Room with Waleed Aly and Nikki Gemmell. Amal is a columnist for popular Muslim women’s website Aquila Style, and a regular contributor to Australian websites Daily Life, ABC Religion and Ethics, and The Vine. Her writing has also been published in Frankie magazine and The Sydney Morning Herald. Amal published her debut novel Courting Samira – a tale of Muslim courtship and coming of age in the modern era – in 2010, and was selected as a quarter- finalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. More recently she contributed to the anthology Coming of Age: Growing up Muslim in Australia (Allen & Unwin, 2014), and is currently working on various projects, including her second novel, This Is How You Get Better.

Hello Everyone, I am Steve Smith the Managing Director, founder and author of Residential Property Investing in Australia or as we affectionately call it, RPI Australia. Currently I am also the Managing Director of a successful National Residential Property investment group who specialise in the education and facilitation of residential property investments nationally and up until now access to my group was strictly by invitation. The purpose of this book is to provide education and assistance to all who seek it to enable them to make better and more informed decisions when they decide to invest on their own, eliminating all the common mistakes and pitfalls people make which has often lead to failure of their investments. The book details all the complex issues that is successful residential property investing and with my 20 plus years’ experience and expertise it will show you how to overcome and manage them systematically one step at a time. I am not saying my approach and methodology in the book is the best or is for everyone, but if the reader wants to grow a successful portfolio in a safe, secure and risk mitigated manner, then the book demystifies the labyrinth that is residential property investing, which will significantly improve their chances of great success

As the Ash Wednesday bushfires raged around her in a small Victorian town in February 1983, a young mother stood between her two young daughters and the massive fireball heading straight for them… Ann tells her dramatic story with candour and disarming humour beginning with her working-class childhood growing up in a village in Lancashire, England. Her fateful decision to marry the young Australian from Melbourne took her to the other side of the world for the adventure of a life time. Twelve years later, her peaceful family life was shattered. This story takes us far beyond the drama of Ash Wednesday. Her reflections and insights are profoundly illuminating and inspirational. This is a story about living and loving, about hope and determination, about facing your worst demons and staring them down. The bushfires that ripped through Victoria and South Australia on Ash Wednesday in 1983 killed 75 people. It was a deadly reminder to the tens of thousands who had moved out of the cities about how dangerous living in the bush could be.

This is a gripping, previously untold story, which throws a chill light on the secrets and lies that flourish in the fertile soil of dehumanising beliefs and practices – i n this case in the Islamic Republic of Iran. This is a memoir by Sydney‐based doctor and writer/translator, Kooshyar Karimi, who in 2000 managed to flee, with his family, escaping certain torture and death which stalked him on a daily basis in his native Iran. Karimi’s sin was his Jewishness and the fact that he helped desperate girls and women, who had been raped, terminate the resulting pregnancies. Kooshyar Karimi is a father, a doctor, a writer, and translator. In 1998, he is kidnapped from the streets, blindfolded, and tortured. When he is eventually released, it is only as a spy for the Islamic Secret Service. This is the story of his survival.

The year is 1999, and a fresh hell is being created before our eyes. It is hardly to be credited that the enlightened nations of Europe are allowing this nightmare to occur only sixty minutes by jet from Paris and London. The forces of Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic have swept into Kosovo on the Balkan Peninsula leaving a trail of death and heartbreak. Scenes of Milosevic’s ‘ethnic cleansing’ play out on television screens all over the world; haunted figures huddled behind barbed wire fences, bodies heaped in ditches. Adelaide surgeon Craig Jurisevic recalls his grandfather’s ordeal in a Nazi concentration camp and resolves to honour his memory by offering his skills as a surgeon to the victims of the conflict. Leaving behind a wife and son, Jurisevic flies to the Balkans under the auspices of the International Medical Corps. Struggling to maintain his moral bearings, Jurisevic’s journey from Adelaide to the hell of Kosovo has become a descent into the heart of darkness. Blood on My Hands, co-written with award-winning author Robert Hillman, tells a story of terrible suffering, of extraordinary heroism, and of the savagery that lies coiled in the human heart.

We were in the doctor's office and it sounded like something out of a B Grade movie when I said: 'Give it to me straight... how long have I got?' He'd just told me I had cancer, compounded by advanced cirrhosis of the liver. The doctor's reply: 'Twelve months'. There was a chance I could live longer if I could get a rare liver transplant but there were hurdles to get over just to get on The List. I knew that, at any time, there are about 2000 Australians waiting for organ donors to save their lives. And 20% die waiting. To complicate things, I was fighting another battle. This one in the courts where I faced a jail sentence for a 'Name Them, Shame Them' campaign which climaxed when I named two serial sex offenders whose identities had been suppressed. A traumatic eight months after making The List, I received a new liver and a new life. Two weeks after surgery I limped into court to be sentenced to five months under house arrest. There were also allegations I had 'jumped the queue' and didn't deserve an organ transplant because I'd been a drinker. In this book, I try to honestly answer all those questions and more. One thing's for sure: It was a helluva year.

April 2014 New Title Releases ‘Hello, I’ve discovered a hole in my apartment… it moves around … yes … if you could come and look at it …bring it down to you, you say … how … hello!’. The protagonist has discovered a hole and tries to find an explanation. He seeks expert advice. But not everything can be explained. Perhaps he will just have to accept that it’s there. THE HOLE has simple, expressive drawings by pen and computer. The hole is punched right through the book, so it exists in real life. Praise: ‘… a stylish and surreal picture book… line drawings combined with a minimal use of colour lends the book a stylish and elegant appearance. With few details, attention is drawn towards the simple points on each page, making the story quick to read and easy to understand for readers young and old. At the same time it raises a whole host of questions, both concrete and abstract, and invites several perusals. It is fortunate that the pages are sturdy – t h i s is a book that will quickly become well‐thumbed.’ – Dagbladet

About the Author Øyvind Torseter is an artist. He has created many picture books and given individual as well as collective exhibitions. Øyvind Torseter won the Bologna Ragazzi Award 2008 with his picture book AVSTIKKERE (DETOURS), and has received several other prizes and nominations as well for his illustrations. But we suspect that THE HOLE will be his great international break‐through. No online pdf can do justice to this fabulous story, as the physical hole going straight through the book cannot be visible on a screen. Still, you will get an idea of the philosophical implications raised in this book when looking at the illustrations. Originally published in Norwegian.

Lat's 'Kampung Boy' is a timeless favourite of millions of readers in Southeast Asia. With masterful economy worthy of Charles Schultz, Lat recounts the life of Mat, a Muslim boy growing up in rural Malaysia in the 1950s: his adventures and mischief‐making, fishing trips, religious education, and work on his family's rubber plantation. Meanwhile, the traditional way of life in his village (or kampung) is steadily disappearing, with tin mines and factory jobs increasingly overtaking the village's agricultural way of life. When Mat himself leaves for boarding school, he can only hope that his familiar kampung will still be there when he returns. This delightful autobiographical graphic novel is hilarious and affectionate, with brilliant, super-expressive artwork that opens a window into ordinary Malay life. Such is the affection for this book in his native Malaysia, Lat has been honoured as one of that country's national treasures, entitled to the honorary title, 'Datuk'. 'Sweet, funny, and brilliantly drawn, Kampung Boy is one of the all‐time great cartoon books' ‐ Matt Groening (The Simpsons) About the Author Author of the autobiographical graphic novel Kampung Boy, Mohammad Nor Khalid was born in Malaysia on 5 March 1951. Known as 'Lat,' many of his cartoons appear in the editorial pages of the Malaysian national newspaper, New Straits Times. One of the most beloved cartoonists in Southeast Asia, Lat published his first work when he was just thirteen years old. He has received numerous awards, including, in 1994, the prestigious Malaysian honorific title, Datuk. Most recently he was honored by the Malaysian Press Institute with their Special Jury Award, given to 'those who have contributed significantly to journalism and society and have become an institution in their own right.' He is famous throughout Malaysia. Editions of Kampung Boy, his most celebrated and best-loved work, have appeared in France, Germany and the US. Written originally in English, the book has sold countless thousands of copies worldwide. The book has been turned into an animated series and has also been the subject of an orchestral performance by famed modern composer Carl Davis. First Published 2009, Reprinted 2014.

About the Authors Julian Tuwim (1894‐1953) was one of Poland's leading poets. He won fame not just for his adult verse but also for his rhymes for children, many of which are classics known to every Polish child. He also wrote satirical verse and loved word games, inventing palindromes (whole sentences that read the same forwards and backwards), lipograms (whole paragraphs that leave out a particular letter), and tautograms (sentences where every word starts with the same letter). Nobody knows if he ever set out to sea to see a whale. Bohdan Butenko (born 1931) is one of Poland's top illustrators, whose drawings appear in more than 200 children's books. He is also famous for his animated cartoons especially featuring Gucio the clumsy hippo and Cezar the sensible dog ‐ as well as for his stage sets and television design. He has won many prizes, among them the 2012 Order of the Smile ‐ a special medal awarded by children to adults who are particularly kind to them.
