January 2017 Sitting in the apartment in Canberra wondering how long TV will be relevant for with so much access to streamed content. Even on my Sunday walk I listened to Le Mans Radio from overseas to get a radio coverage of the Bathurst 12 Hour Race. Great coverage. I notice our State Government has been instrumental in landing Alibaba to commence activity in Victoria – what planet are state Governments on and what product is actually created by an online equivalent to Amazon; and no screaming from the authors or publishers over this – probably it needed to be located in Sydney to get some notice? Enough; we have so many distractions from buying books locally. I also note the State Government has allowed a free hit for certain publishers for the entry costs to the State Premiers Literary prize as administered by the Wheeler Centre. What sort of level playing field is this? When I return from my next weeks on the road I will make contact with the relevant department to – 'please explain’ how do I tell our about 1000 publishers they are relevant even though they are not members of the Small Press Network. Not a rant – just wanting some basic fairness not disintermediation. Books. Being back on the road it enables me to read from those treasured PDF’s the publishers send me. I am delighted to announce that ETT will be bringing back into print the Robyn Davidson – Travelling Light. Whilst I had watched Tracks as a movie and knew of her from years ago I had really no idea as to her Queensland background around Miles and Nambour. How places like Nambour and its neighbouring town Buderim have changed – no more the fire burning the sugar cane, no more cane laden trains down the main street just plenty of apartments and shopping centres laden with imported goods. Travelling Light has been out of print for years and there is a whole generation of readers ready to read her stories of life, change and a touch of anger with how we have treated some of our people. Please read or ask for a reading copy. Oddly in a weekend or so I will be at the start of the Camel Lady trail as I am leaving Brisbane on a Saturday – going via Alice and starting in Adelaide the next Monday. Do we have any bookshops in Alice Springs? The other outstanding book is Personal Best by Josh Black. Josh is an ex North Shore boy who embarked on life changing ways some years ago. I have not met him yet, however the book reminds me of those moments when you are reading – say Malcolm Gladwell and you have a Gladwell moment – Personal Best does the same to me. I got so excited the other Sunday night when Roger Federer won the Australian Open as Roger is one of the chapters in the book. If you want to be

Words From The Wise a high performance manager, sports person, or simply want to take leadership from some exceptional case stories then read Personal Best. We got the final PDF of the much awaited book by Jackson Oppy called When Hell Freezes Over a story of Ice addiction by a reformed addict. All true. Media will be by Debbie McInnes and should be very strong. Tom Elliot has also written a foreword. I think we all know drug victims and feel so sorry for the system that has to humanly deal with them. It makes me more content with our taxes serving the needs of a community. With the growth of pure play online book vendors we are trying to encourage more Omni players to take a feed from us. I now realise how valuable they are because it has that days in stocks, is accurate with newly loaded agencies and current titles and it is free and supplied daily. Those businesses who use the file seem to have more special orders than those who don’t. The list is almost all Australian authored content - we are not the local leg of a global conglomerate and the subsequent pricing. Our January sales were ok, not as strong as 2016, however the books were different – we did not invoice almost 2000 copies of Moroccan Soup Bar this year, and our export sales were down for known reasons. Speaking of export I should run some reports on what share it is of our business with Australian authors. So am I optimistic? Sure am as the joy of reading just simply exceeds all other form of entertainment. By the way I bumped into Albert Ullin last week and Max Oliver, Albert owned the wonderful Little Bookroom and was a bookseller to look up to with fond memories. He was likely to have been our first chain bookseller in Melbourne by having stores in Camberwell, South Yarra and Equitable Place Melbourne at the same time. Max when he worked in Melbourne worked with Herb Strehlen in the glory days of Robertson & Mullins / Angus & Robertson Read broadly – sell well DJ PS; This month’s window display winner is the National Library Bookshop in Canberra for the Pup Art single copy showing and I could not resist the dump holding the employee feedback container outside a Melbourne business last week.

The spread of crystal methamphetamine use sees more and more families face a horrifying reality ‐ their child or spouse or parent is an addict. Their world is a hell where Ice rules and it is far from OK. Ice took families, society and the drug‐addiction treatment sector by surprise. Young users often bypassed alcohol, 'soft' and party drug use, so the first mind‐altering substance they try is ice, the world's strongest stimulant. A new kind of mature addict emerged, a drug‐using individual who seemed to manage to navigate life normally before, and then suddenly abandoned everything. People become withered, psychotic, mumbling ghosts. The speed of their journey broke all previous records. Their unmanageability became legendary. The core of this book is not the drug, but the people: the addict who desperately needs help, and the people around the addict who need clear and practical information about the solution. With the right treatment, addicts do recover.

Author Information Jackson Oppy was an addict to drugs for 15 years, to ice for the last nine of them. His family experienced the trauma that comes with having a loved one in the grip of addiction, believing there was there was no way out, and feeling hopeless. After many attempts to stop, after losing everything, Jackson entered recovery at age 35 and now lives alcohol‐ and drug‐free. He uses his experience to help other addicts. In his current role at The Hader Clinic, he deals with addicts and their families every day, using his intimate knowledge of the problem and the solution.

We are living beneath our potential, allowing our doubts and anxieties to close us within an ever‐tightening circle of possibility. We are too willing to accept things as they are. Though we might daydream about things as they might be, we do less than we could to realize our potential, to live the life that is available to us if only we will reach out and take it. Personal Best will help you unlock your potential by pointing you towards the kind of mental strengths that drive the performance of some of the world's greatest athletes. Those seeking to improve their personal, professional, or athletic outcomes can adopt these habits. The 10 championship virtues, which cover everything from tenacity and dedication to love and belief, are the mental (not physical) qualities. We make them not a part of our lives but of ourselves. These qualities power elite‐level performance, and they can power change in your life. Through exceptional storytelling and practical lessons, Josh Black will guide you towards your own transformative trigger moment. The profiles of courage and endurance contained in this book move from the elation of victory to the agony of defeat, and they will provide you with the tools you need to both face and overcome life's seemingly insurmountable obstacles on the way to spectacular success. Author Information Born in Sydney, Australia in 1975, Josh Black was fascinated with sport from an early age. His mile-wide competitive streak saw him compete in a number of sports before he had reached double digits, and he continued to push himself into athletic pursuits of all kinds through his teenage years. As soon as he was able, Josh began to travel the world, broadening his perspective and gaining important professional experience in international markets. Through his high-ranking positions with globally leading brands like Gatorade, PepsiCo and GroupM, he has made his living exploring the intersection between sport and business, always paying particularly close attention to what makes high performers tick. Today, Josh has no fixed address and he is constantly on the move, spending more than 250 days out of the year away from Hong Kong where he has an office. His wanderlust has taken him to nearly every corner of the world, and each time he touches down he finds new experiences and sources of inspiration. Exposure to some of the world’s best athletes changed Josh’s life. By adopting some of the championship virtues, he felt himself becoming a better performer and a better person. He has been using this knowledge to help people in emerging markets improve their lives through physical and mental fitness, and he is now ready and determined to share what he has learned with the world. Josh can be contacted through his website, joshblackhome.com, or you can email him at josh@247xfitness.com.

Since the term Emotional Intelligence was first coined in 1990 by noted psychologists Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer, extensive and ongoing research has been ongoing and has consistently demonstrated the staggeringly significant role emotional intelligence plays in predicting future success and positive business outcomes. Importantly it has been shown to be the single most important factor in the makeup of any successful professional, be it in sales or any other field of endeavour. Specific research undertaken by global, key opinion leader Daniel Goleman has shown that Emotional Intelligence is not only the most powerful predictor of success in the workplace, but is twice as important as the combined value of Intelligence Quotient (I.Q) and Technical Skill combined. This book takes the most efficient and proven sales techniques and strategic guidelines whilst seamlessly combining them with the key driving principles for Emotional Intelligence, to deliver a practical, step by step guide that is logically set out, intuitive to follow and universally applicable to any sales role within any market place. A clear step forward in sales training which has achieved the perfect alignment between selling and emotional intelligence skills. A must read for any serious sales professional. - Michael Finn, Managing Director, Nitto Denko AVAILABLE NOW

The Man from Talalaivka is the gripping story of a man torn between love for his country and the harsh reality of totalitarian rule... The story of a man forced to change countries through the battles of two totalitarian tyrants... In an idyllic Kylapchin village, 200 kilometres north‐east of Kiev, in Ukraine's Sumskaya Oblast, a young man's life was overturned by the brutality of the Stalinist regime. It was 1929: Lenin had died five years earlier, his followers gradually scattering or succumbing to Secretary General Stalin's ruthless will. Upheaval took on a sinister new dimension as 'collectivisation' of farms was enforced throughout Stalin's new Russian empire; no greater effects of which were felt than by Peter and his family, along with millions of others in the Ukraine. Stalin's goal‐to break and destroy the independence of Ukrainian farmers‐did ultimately succeed. But at massive cost. Most were herded to 'collective farms', or kolkhozes. Others‐like Peter's parents Yosef and Palasha‐were gaoled on pretext of being 'kulaks' (wealthy farmers), then sentenced to five years' imprisonment in a Siberian labour camp. It was a one‐way ticket to a slow death. Peter risked his life‐and perhaps even the safety of his young family‐and did the unthinkable: he forged travel documents and journeyed to the Siberian snow‐bound prison camp in which his parents were incarcerated. The journey, and his capture by NKVD agents, almost cost him his life. Miraculously, he returned, changed by the haunting experience...

Author Information Olga Chaplin is a member of The Society of Women Writers NSW Inc. She currently lives in Sydney with her husband, Ric. The Man from Talalaivka is her first historical novel.

I have been blessed with three sons and despite the fact that they are independent, functioning young men, I still found myself trying to advise them on how to live their lives ‐ after all I am older, wiser and have had more experience in this life. But naturally they didn't need or want my input. My sons tell me that I always have an 'angle' ‐ that I am always scheming to do things my way. How right they are. An idea was beginning... Last year for Mothers' Day I suggested that we reverse the usual procedure ‐ instead of me being the recipient of a gift, I would give each of them a gift with all my love. I duly gave a copy of this to each of them, and so my book was born! How marvellous it was to be able to lavish and impart my pearls of wisdom without fear of being ignored or interrupted with a dismissive wave of the hand. What joy! What unbridled joy! Their individual responses were both touching and amusing. From the first son there was a rapid blinking of his eyes because 'the sun was too bright'. The second response was a reluctant broad smile from ear to ear of affirmation. The third and most rewarding was, 'Mum, even though this is a bunch of old‐fashioned hog‐wash, I'm going to keep it safe and pass it on to my own kids one day'. BINGO!

Author Information Denise Luboff is a Sydney high school English teacher with a family of 3 sons. She is passionate about sharing her experiences in communicating with her children to the wider community. This is her first book.

Redrawing the boundaries of Tasmania into four whisky districts and then journeying across each one, over four years Tasmanian whisky historian and well-respected writer Bernard Lloyd visited every Tasmanian whisky distillery, including Australia's first, to discover their distinctive and innovative ways of Tasmanian whisky making. His pioneering journey shows how Tasmania's native peats and barley strains, its climate and its water, together with its people - farmers, scientists, maltsters, brewers, distillers, coppersmiths, coopers, lawmakers, excise officers and brand ambassadors - combine to make the island's world-renowned whisky spirits. The book also features > Tasmania's Whisky Districts: maps and guide > The inner workings of all Tasmania's whisky distilleries explained by each distiller > Tasmania's whisky ingredients > Whisky Tasting Notes from expert taster Yuri Chlebnikowski > Images of rare Tasmanian whisky bottles and their labels > Archival records and never-seen-before images of colonial whisky distilleries and their departed spirits > Emerging Tasmanian distilleries > Colourful stories of colonial and contemporary whisky devils, rapscallions, moonshiners and scoffers > An Australia-wide Where To Try and Buy Tasmanian Whisky guide

The story of the first cadet-midshipmen to join the Royal Australian Naval College is without parallel. In 1913 twenty-eight thirteen-year-old boys joined the new Navy at a time when Australia was both idealistic and ambitious. The boys were drawn from every State and became known as the ‘Pioneer Class'. Australia's Argonauts is the result of many years' research. It brings together previously unpublished diaries, letters, archival material and photographs. The Pioneer Class bore witness to or were leading actors in the most important events in the Navy’s early history. The most famous member was John Collins, hero of the Sydney-Bartolomeo Colleoni action, who became the first Naval College graduate to be Chief of Naval Staff. The class also included Rupert Long who played a pivotal role in Naval intelligence, Eric Feldt who ran the famous 'Coastwatchers' and Peyton Kimlin who wrote the score for one of Australia's first ballet. But like the argonauts of legend, they faced travails that sometimes consumed them. The book charts the lives of the Pioneer Class from their first days at the Naval College, service with the Grand Fleet in World War I, naval and civilian careers between the wars, their great contribution during World War II and their passing into our history. The Pioneer Class were not only the first, but the greatest class to graduate from the Naval College. Author Information Peter Jones served for 40 years in the Royal Australian Navy rising to the rank of Vice Admiral. Among his seagoing appointments were command of the frigate HMAS Melbourne (1998-99) and the multinational Maritime Interception Force during 2003 Iraq War. Peter is also a naval historian, an Adjunct Professor at the University of NSW (Australian Defence Force Academy) and President of the Australian Naval Institute. While he has edited or contributed to a number of books, Australia's Argonauts will be his first book as sole author.

The Armour of Light is about a truly remarkable Australian, a man who was described by some as a saint, and whose church rattling and lampooning of his opposition challenged others. Barry Marshall was probably the most well ‐ known Australian priest at the time of his tragic death, in 1970, from a fall which occurred just before his investiture as the first Australian Principal of Pusey House at Oxford University. He was well known for his total dedication to his priestly life, his ixture of erudition and playfulness, for his work as a Bush Brother in outback Bourke and his time as chaplain at Trinity College, the University of Melbourne. Barry was responsible for introducing significant Vatican ll inspired reforms into the Anglican Church in Australia. To the consternation of his bishops he campaigned against infant baptism, maintaining it was a socially accepted practice rather than a serious commitment to Christianity, and as such was a harbinger of the demise of the church. Four decades after his death the influence of the Christian church as an institution has indeed greatly diminished in western society. Despite enormous technological progress and modern development, our society harbours high levels of depression and suicide, and many are seeking meaning in their lives. Barry Marshall's view of such things and his prophetic foresight are part of a story which enriches the history of Australian spirituality.

Author Information Dr Nola Firth’s academic work has been in the field of education. She has also published essays and poetry and she won the Rhonda Jancovic Literary Award for social justice in 2015. Published works include an educational text entitled Success and Dyslexia and a poetry collection entitled Even if the Sun. Nola is a Churchill Fellow and an Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne and at The Murdoch Childrens Research Institute.

Jim Rigney has been a commercial diver since the age of seventeen. Starting as a harbour diver in northern Tasmania, Jim has gone on to forge a long and extensive career within the offshore diving industry, taking him all over the world as an air diver, saturation bell diver, medical technician and diving superintendent. Life of a Diver is a collection of Jim’s experiences and observations from a lifetime within the commercial diving industry, both in Australia and abroad. It’s the life of a diver who worked on the salvage and survey following the 1975 Tasman Bridge disaster; who made it a personal mission to establish Australia’s first saturation diving training facility in the 1990s; and who once wanted to teach an ill‐behaved crew member a lesson and inadvertently created an Internet viral hit in the process. Jim also shares his insights from over forty‐five years in a tough but rewarding industry, and how he has navigated the day to day challenges that come with off‐shore work — and what improvements can still be made. The Life of a Diver such as Jim Rigney is one of adventure, danger and the search for stimulating work and innovation. Author Information Rigney was born in Burnie, Tasmania in 1953. He commenced his career as a commercial diver at the age of seventeen, following a year working in the underground mines on Tasmania’s west coast so as to finance his diver training and purchase the necessary equipment. Jim progressed from harbor diving and commenced abalone diving in Tasmania in 1972 but became increasingly frustrated with the tedium that abalone diving had to offer, compared to the challenges of the subsea construction industry. Fate would deliver the opportunity to leave the abalone industry and pursue a career as a construction diver when the ill-fated Lake Illawarra struck Hobart’s Tasman Bridge in January of 1975. This incident caused the destruction of a section of bridge and the sinking of the vessel. Jim worked on this project twice, during the early reconstruction and the subsequent removal of the ship’s bow from the riverbed. Soon after this project he was able to fulfil a lifetime ambition to become a diver working in Australia’s offshore oil and gas industry — a role that he still undertakes to this day as the operations manager with one of Asia’s largest commercial diving companies. During his long and extensive career as a commercial diver, Jim has undertaken practically every role available within the industry: air diver, saturation diver, supervisor, diving medical technician and saturation diving superintendent. Jim’s work has provided him with the opportunity to work in virtually all of the world’s oilfields including South East Asia, the Middle East, the subcontinent and the North Sea. In this extensive memoir Geoff Mosley tells of his early formative years spent in the famed Peak District of the UK. The book gives a good account of what life was like during those turbulent years (1931–50) before moving on to his student days. Trained as a geographer Geoff tells of his early adventures abroad, his time spent completing National Service and then his embarking on further travel to Canada and New Zealand before eventually settling in Australia in 1960. It was here in Australia that Geoff was to make his mark as a conservationist of both national and international significance. The Australian Conservation Foundation and Geoff’s involvement with it from its earliest days is part of this detailed story. There is also a personal story of a busy life with a growing family and the sacrifices made along the way. A tireless worker still, these pages also outline his message on how to save the Planet from the excesses of today.

When Ethel Griggs dies suddenly in the Victorian country town of Omeo in January 1928, rumours about her husband's blatant affair with Lottie, the lovely twenty year old daughter of local grazier and Methodist elder, Jack Condon, are rife. So rife that despite a doctor's certificate suggesting natural causes, police order Ethel Grigg's body to be exhumed and the young mother of eleven month old baby Alwyn is found to have died from arsenic poisoning. Her husband, the Rev. Ron Griggs, the district's Methodist minister, is charged with her cruel and heartless murder. Based on a true story, Reg Egan has recreated the town and its people, the atmosphere and the love affair that intrigued and shocked the whole of Australia. This is a true crime story that is as brutal and shocking today as it was in 1928.

Author Information Reg Egan is a local winemaker and writer who lives in country Victoria. He owned his own legal practice in Mount Waverly for thirty years before making the switch to a full‐time vigeneron. He has many years of experience in Australian criminal cases, and it is with this insight that he has been able to bring the story of Lottie to life.

Something is very rotten in the state of Tasmania. Brad Finch, the marquee player of the Tassie Devils Football Club, is the victim at the heart of a new murder mystery. Intense media scrutiny, interfering superior officers, and corrupt business interests all threaten to derail the homicide investigation conducted by the Serious Crimes Squad. Forensic analysis, dogged detective work, and inspiration may prove insufficient in the search for the true perpetrators. The team must face unpalatable truths about the nature of professional sport and the exercise of power in modern Australian society. Detective Inspector John Mahoney, the hero of this international crime series of police procedurals, is an outsider in his hometown of Hobart. Disillusioned by his private life and shocked by the corruption he unearths, he queries his capacity to continue in the job. He must decide if he has the courage to "speak truth to power".

Tasmania is in trouble. While mainland Australia surges through the backwash of the GFC the island state is struggling. Political infighting, bureaucratic ineptitude and a lack of investment have curtailed progress. Too many people are lodging on 'Struggle Street'. D.I. John Mahoney knows this as well as anyone. Of more immediate concern to him is the brutal murder of a prominent business leader. The scale of public interest is high and the Serious Crimes Squad must make headway fast. As the investigation proceeds it becomes clear that whoever is behind the barbarity is sending a message to the whole community. Another homicide quickly follows and pressure mounts as they seek to unravel the trail of clues.

It is almost two years since wildfires ravaged the tiny town of Bullock, and Melbourne journalist, Georgie Harvey, is on assignment in the recovering town to write a feature story on the anniversary of the tragedy. In nearby Daylesford, police officer, John Franklin, is investigating a spree of vandalism and burglaries, while champing to trade his uniform for the plain clothes of a detective. When Georgie's story and Franklin's cases collide, she not only finds herself back in conflict with the man she's been trying to forget since their first encounter, but she uncovers the truth about how the fires started ‐ a truth no‐one is wanting to believe. "Sandi Wallace has mastered rural crime." B. Michael Radburn, author of The Falls "A gripping twist on the bushfire threat all Australians live with." Jaye Ford, author Darkest Place

Genocide in the African country of Sontaria causes a surge of escaping refugees to seek sanctuary in neighbouring Namola. In Namola, The Fund uses all its resources to build a state‐of‐the‐art facility and to move the refugees from their disease ridden camp on the border. However, President for Life Joseph Lattua has other plans for the new encampment and evicts the refugees, moving his brother's army into the quarters. Justine Small and her fellow board members must regain control of their camp or many more refugees will die. They recruit exiled Namolan surgeon Daniel Zibu and convince him to return to the country of his birth in order to defeat Lattua's army and oust the tyrant. Without an army, can The Fund and Zibu succeed in their wild scheme, and who will be made to pay the ultimate price? Who will the moon goddess Mawu smile upon? Author Information My family and I have lived in the Penrith area for the past twenty-eight years and will soon be able to call ourselves 'locals'. I have served in the Australian Army as a signalman, for over two years in the CMF (Army Reserve) and for eighteen months as a National Serviceman. During my time in National Service, I trained at Watsonia in Melbourne and served at Army Headquarters in Canberra. For the past decade I have been the proprietor of a business currently trading under the name AustPro, which is a Commercial Agency performing the leg-work for the legal industry. I have been a licensed Commercial Agent/Private Investigator for twenty years and prior to that, I was a public servant with the Sydney County Council. I commenced my first business, the Nepean Commercial Agency on leaving the council and my wife still runs this company. (I am a silent partner.) My hobbies include photography, woodwork and gardening. I am an avid reader of fiction as well as Australian and Ancient History, where I take particular delight in seeking out the more quirky aspects of history. A close‐knit group of five tough and experienced construction workers, who have contracted at some of the biggest projects in the Southern Hemisphere, are at a secret meeting called by Greg, their leader of sorts. Peter, Rangi, Dave and Bill are all listening intently as Greg lays out his ingenious scheme. Astounded at the audacity of the "Project", all are keen to get it underway. Each can envisage the part he has to play and each knows that he has the capacity to get it done on time. As Greg has pointed out, total secrecy must be kept, even from their wives and at all times from any other tradesmen or friends. Of the five men, Peter will have the biggest challenge in keeping it from the ever‐alert friends he has in the Stock Exchange while still dealing with them. "It's a giant con,' Greg concludes, 'and if we pull it off you will all be rather wealthy ‐ it's all or nothing." Author Information Born in 1938 to a New Zealand Father and a Irish Mother who was born in New Zealand, life was tough. A traditional family, we lived, loved and suffered all things that were thrown our way as all families did during that time. Dropping out of school at the age of 15, my father taught me the tough tricks in life and I had to apply myself to a lot of different skills to help support the family. After time as the little shit-kicker, I decided it was time to apply myself and took on the apprenticeship of a boilermaker – and there, the history is written. This I knew was to be my path … rugby league stepped in to help … but overall, I became the person I am because of this one choice that I made. This story is part of my journey … many in the industry would understand this story. Many may have been in similar situations. Some may still be in similar situations. This story is a path that we can all take …

Come on! Be daring and take a journey to faraway places. These are not the usual faraway places and these faraway places will leave you with more than just bragging rights. Faraway Places goes to dark and dingy places that the faint‐ hearted might wish are truly faraway. But are they? Not when you take a crazed trip with an odd‐ball who dreams of a faraway place all the while he is on a slow‐burn to insanity. Maybe he can solve the problem of living in a caravan alongside a garbage tip with a foul‐mouthed significant other and a companion dog. That's not an easy problem to solve when you lack initiative. Perhaps the frozen wastelands of pre‐revolutionary Russia are a change of location but still you'll find that it's that kind of faraway place where many bizarre things could be possible: dog‐headed people might exist, a nasty conman can become a tsar and if you want to save your skin, there are people you should avoid. If that's not enough, then waiting to be solved is the provenance of two mysterious trunks and their contents in the basement of St Petersburg's Hermitage. Finally, a misconstruction about a killing on an isolated farm in a British colony in 1815 leads to disastrous consequences. Decent men can commit abominable acts and criminals can be decent. In this faraway place, it's brutal times all round—brutal times for the original native inhabitants, for settlers and their women, and for the convicts and child convicts.

A SHUTDOWN IN AMMONIA Continues the adventure... The best laid plans of mice and men, and indeed of engineers and managers, do often go askew, thus, as the story of the Muddy River Bay Ammonia Factory continues we find the engineer wants to concentrate on preparing for the total shutdown for their first all‐over, complete, maintenance overhaul and inspection, and he throws the planning job to his junior engineers. But his manager needs to have work done which will increase sales, hence revenue and take them closer to profitability, so the juniors have to be shifted to that urgent work. And the manager's life is troubled by absence of two important staff, can he expect the Production Manager and the Marketing manager will return? The unions are also contributing a share of concerns, fussing about safety with a large temporary workforce coming in for the shutdown. Directors continue in their merry way, enjoying morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. The Marketing Director has a bright idea and promotes it, some of his associates like it, one doesn't. Who will win this contest? Will there be any progress towards the Chief's aim of getting new blood into Head Office? "The author brings to this stage in the Muddy Waters saga his wealth of personal experience from a multiplicity of perspectives which is mirrored in the career path of Al Grassy, the Production Engineer. What is also highlighted is the gulf [which, in the real world and across most disciplines, is almost endemic] between 'one discipline' graduates who not only progress Author Information Ron Ward is a Sydney resident, he and wife Brenda live in a bushland suburb, in a house they built many years ago. Their son, an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales, also lives in Sydney. He has worked as an apprentice, tradesman, draftsman, project engineer, maintenance engineer, factory manager, consulting engineer, academic, and accident investigator on the way to his present position as a company director. Many of those positions have overlapped in time, and all have contributed to what's in both A Project in Ammonia, his first novel, and this sequel to that. On the path through that work-life he worked through a Trades Certificate, an ASTC Diploma, a BE from the University of New South Wales, an MBA from Macquarie University, and a PhD from the University of New South Wales. He maintains his academic connection by appointment as a Visiting Fellow at the University of New South Wales, and has published well over 140 papers on engineering, management, industrial safety and education, and three non-fiction books. A Beginning in Ammonia

Continues the adventure... Which began as getting a project approved And then building an ammonia‐based fertilizer factory. There's keeping the Head Office satisfied And controlling a group of smart people at several levels Plus covering what government regulations require Then getting the factory built is not the end of the job After that there's commissioning, making it work And all the odds and ends of left‐over details to be completed Including making the contractor finishes what he's paid to do And then there's company accounts to be signed off After all that we hope we have a reasonably happy "working family" Because people are an essential part of running a business So although this is about engineering and management It's a story about people.

A Beginning in Ammonia continues the adventure...

On a Colony World

Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

A Project in Ammonia is an adventure in physical management and social engineering and contradicts turgeon's Law (ninety percent of everything is crud) by exploring what happens when an unlikely group of four people, two Australians, one English and one French‐Israeli, fight their way through the bureaucratic maze of their employer, assisted behind the scenes by the Chief Executive, and get what they want: exile to a colony, to build a fertilizer factory there. All against the preferences of the company's directors who persistently do what they can to upset the exiles' work, including adding an American colonist to the team, a person expected to be incompatible with the others.

So the Ammonia Factory at Muddy River Bay is now operating. Of course, now the hard slog of building it, and the excitement of commissioning it, are over, everyone expects life will be quieter.

But there's always something to bother a manager, such as getting sales up to match production, and the behaviour of the people close to the manager, and the enterprising nature of junior engineers, and what comes from the organisation levels above him, all causing a mix of good results and headaches. And that's some of what being a manager is all about. Yes that's some of it, but the work around a manager causes other events to occur, so there's no end to what circumstances can throw up.

In Metro no. 191, identity is brought to the fore. The collision of personal and political is prominently explored in the ABC adaptation of Christos Tsiolkas’ Barracuda, Korean‐American feature Spa Night and Sundance Grand Jury Prize– winning documentary Sonita. The marginalisation of women is captured in Hotel Coolgardie and Wednesday, May 9, while the undervaluing of old age is critiqued in Winter at Westbeth. The ties between place and self are chronicled in Australian satire Down Under, moody series The Kettering Incident, and Chinese films Tharlo and Life After Life. Sex and depictions of it are investigated in Embedded and local classic Alvin Purple, while murky ethics are brought to light by The Family and Tickled. Truth, beauty and violence are unravelled in the films of Korean stylist Park Chan‐ wook, and horror is interrogated in Killing Ground, Red Billabong and The Wailing. Best encapsulating the theme of identity is recent Australian success Girl Asleep – the issue’s cover story – whose prosperous journey from page to stage to screen aligns with its central character’s growing confidence and coming of age. First, they came for the world record, now they’re bringing us an exciting and enlightening documentary which details their World Record setting 366 consecutive marathons (while both in their 60’s no less) around Australia and not only covering 15,782kms but also doing it on a raw vegan diet. RAW The Documentary (based from the popular book ‘Raw Can Cure Cancer” by Janette Murray-Wakelin. Brolga Publighing + first published in 2013) sets out to shatter some misconceptions of what one can achieve eating a raw vegan diet. It explores the lives of Janette and Alan as they began to consider the benefits of a raw diet after Janette was diagnosed with cancer and given 6 months to live. Now years on and in their 60’s and healthy as a direct result of their fitness and commitment to ethical diets they want to share the amazing feats they have completed and the experiences along the way – which include the beauty of family, the love they have shared for over 30 years, a lifetime of fitness, the marathons in the great Australian nature encountering cyclones, torrential rain and 44+ degree weather. RAW The Documentary stands to be an informative resource for our awareness of the possibilities achievable on a raw vegan diet and the larger comments on the betterment of the environment, water sources and the considerations of all the species on this planet. Knowledge is the Prime Resource! The pursuit of knowledge is perhaps life's greatest challenge. Traditionally Aboriginal peoples cared for the land, living as one with it. This custodial relationship, expressed through cultural practices, sustained the natural environment and secured the viability of resources necessary to sustain the continuing existence of Aboriginal society over many millennia. This book containing the words of Frances Bodkin and visual imagery of Lorraine Robertson will take you on a journey of understanding the ancient knowledge of the original People of This Land of the D'harawals.

Throughout the past two hundred years, society has come to regard the Koori Dreaming stories as something akin to the fairy stories they were told as children. However, for thousands upon thousands of years, the stories in this book were used as a teaching tool to impart to the youngest members of the clans the laws that governed the cultural behaviour of clan members. The su ccessive attempts to destroy the Koori culture and assimilate The People into Euro‐centric population were unsuccessful, and their disguise as charming legends in which animals, birds, insects, even fish became the heroes and heroines. Author Information Food and gatherings were such an enormous part of my childhood. I fell joyously in love with entertaining and throwing parties when I first left home. I relish opening our door and sharing our table and a special meal with others. I love the celebration of honest everyday cooking and that is what my food is all about. When a meal is shared at our table or around our bench, the hectic pace stops! Not only do we enjoy the food and its many flavours, we stop and enjoy each other and all of the unique and incredible things that make us family and friends – how grateful I am that we came to find one another. Sharing food in this way brings a very special richness to my life – it is what make me….well, me. I opened ‘Relish Mama’ very early in 2009 by turning a lifelong dream and passion of offering some of the best cooking classes into a reality. Cliché, it seems, but I followed a dream and have never looked back. Relish Mama is all about celebrating the everyday. It is about celebrating a shared table and simple but honest ingredients with those that choose to share our large kitchen bench and table and those that leave feeling a little more enriched and hopefully, a little more loved, elated and confident. For me, good food and great home cooking is all about the passing on and sharing of knowledge with each other. Don’t hold it close to our chests – let’s share it. No matter how many restaurants I go to, nothing beats home style cooking prepared with love that is served at a table with those I love and who I can share a great laugh with - share myself with. This sort of sharing is good for the soul. It adds a little magic to our days. It is about so much more than the food but good food and a shared table is where the magic truly begins! Happy cooking to you all! Nellie Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

On the streets, under the ground and on the information superhighway, radicals and rebels have made this town their own. The acclaimed Radical Melbourne revealed the hidden history of the city's first hundred years in what John Pilger called "a brilliantly original, long overdue unveiling of a great city's true past". Now Radical Melbourne 2: The Enemy Within traverses the same alleys and lanes to uncover a story of secret police and secret armies, guerrilla artists and underground cells, militant unionists and intransigent peaceniks. From the Cold War to hot jazz, from teenage rioters to Maoist revolutionaries, take a tour through sixty years that shook Melbourne.

When I was a child, my father went away. He came home only once a year, in the summer for two weeks. He smelled of the sea, my father. That's because he was... A great pirate. The amazing stories Dad tells of life with his pirate crew fire up his young son's imagination. But then, one year, Dad doesn't return home. Now it's his son's turn to make an amazing journey of his own - to find his father. Soon he will discover a secret beyond anything he has imagined so far.

'When I grow up, I want to be like my dad.'

From the award-winning creators of The Little Eskimo, and the acclaimed author of The Bear with the Sword, What is this Thing Called Love? and The Enemy.

'Sam and His Dad' is a joyful and funny celebration of ordinary family life, the little details that excite a child's imagination and the quirky ways they interpret the adult world. It's a book any child can see themselves in and relate to.

Sam's dad is an artist, and Sam's life is full of creativity, exploration and adventure. Serge Bloch's semi-autobiographical picture book shows us life through Sam's eyes, as he plays with his little brother, goes to the park, visits a farm, goes on holiday - all in the company of the long-suffering but affectionate Dad he loves so much.

What makes a dad ideal? Is he strong as a wrestler, or handsome as a movie star? Is he intelligent or sporty? Or is he just good at jigsaw puzzles and have lots of hair? One little girl is about to find out, in this funny, charming and ultimately moving story of her search for a dad who can measure up to the mummy she loves. Written by the winner of France's prestigious Baobab Award, Davide Cali, one of Europe's most innovative writers for children, and illustrated by Anna-Laura Cantone, twice included in the Bologna Children's Book fair illustration competition. This Wilkins Farago edition marks its first publication into English anywhere in the world.

In this funny and entertaining picture book about finding your passion, young Marcolino doesn't want to practise the piano. 'When I was your age, I played for hours,' Mum insists, but Grandfather remembers things rather differently. He helps Marcolino find the musical instrument that's right for him - and it's a real surprise! Created by two of Europe's most acclaimed creators of books for children, Davide Cali and Eric Heliot (France's leading children's illustrator). For readers aged from 4 to 7. 'Cali is nothing if not diverse in his choice of subjects to explore. He treats them with keen perception and creativity. Allied with gifted illustrators, his books are always memorable. Highly recommended.' - Magpies

Grandads can be silly and make a lot of noise. So which of these guys would you trust with your toys? An alphabet in rhyme, based on the true lives and faces of some beloved grandpas, oupas and pops!

Author Information After more than fifteen years working as a corporate writer, Andrea Gallagher wrote Superstar Grandmas (and the follow-up, Mega-Rad Grandads) to fulfill a childhood dream of becoming a children’s book author. It was also an opportunity to present a positive image of aging to children. After becoming a mother of two boys, she was re-acquainted with the types of books that she had loved as a child, and now had two in-house test subjects to study and design stories for. Through her children, she was also exposed to a generation of grandparents (more vibrant and active than any other before them) who became the inspiration for her rhymes. Andrea is a lover of old things, a collector of simple treasures, an occasional gardener, and a slightlybroken supermodel (which is also the name of her blog for grown-ups). Based in Brisbane, she enjoys an active, sunny lifestyle, raising her young family. Illustrator Information David Clare has worked for more than thirty years as a commercial graphic artist, and has been mastering oil painting and his love of all things artistic for even longer. Creating the images for Superstar Grandmas has been his first experience of working as an illustrator (as well as his first time working with acrylics for a while), and he is now busy breathing life into the faces for the follow-up book, Mega-Rad Grandads. After being a stay-at-home father during the early years with his three children, he knows a lot about how art can inspire and delight little people and uses this in his method as an illustrator. David lives in Brisbane, where he still works as a graphic artist, as well as teaching art classes in the evenings and enjoying a love of music and sports in any spare time he gets. The gift of literacy is one of the most important gifts we can give our kids. It can quite literally transform their lives, giving them the confidence and skills they will need throughout school and into their adult lives. Likewise, poor literacy and numeracy can have a devastating effect on individuals and on our society. Every year more kids leave school without the skills they need to achieve their true potential As experienced literacy specialist Fay Tran argues in this timely and important book, no child should leave school without satisfactory literacy and numeracy skills. The key is to teach them using PHONICS: the simple, effective and proven method described in this book. Phonics is not only proven by modern academic research to be the most effective way of teaching literacy, it is also the method embedded at the heart of Australia's new National Curriculum. Armed with the skills and techniques covered in this book, any adult can teach the kids in their care to read. Whether you're learning phonics for the first time or refreshing your skills, 'Teaching Kids to Read' is an essential resource.

Following a sensational scandal at one of London’s most desired postcodes, Jane and Patrick decide to escape the gossip with a family holiday to Ibiza, their eight-year-old son George in tow. Also on the island that week is a TV reality show involving an eccentric artist, a horny It Girl, a Brazilian footballer and a famous magician. As hapless celebrities are picked off one by one, Jane is desperate to be on the programme, leaving childcare in the not so capable hands of a teenager. One lesbian escapade and an explosive row over hair removal later, the contestants of Ibiza or Bust leave the island with more than sand in places they never knew existed… '...hilariously observed… a much-welcomed comedy of manners.' - Jane Green, New York Times Bestselling author
