August 2013 New Title Release An original and unique literary tour‐de‐force, HIS STORY – A Novel Memoir – The Life and Times of Dick O’Toole is a blend of memoir, faction, fiction, and radical social and political history that is funny, tragic, playful, iconoclastic, and satirical. The revelations are profound, the humour is black, and the style is a breeze. Dick O’Toole is a rogue floundering on the assault course of life. His attempts at making the world a better place and his ‘doggedness’ in defending the underdog invariably lead to anguish and failure, but our protagonist comes up smelling of roses. Readers are advised to fasten their seat belts: they’re in for a wild ride. ‘A remarkable work of literature. The writing is swirling and chaotic, rarely in one place, a terrific collision of ideas and images, memories and diatribes. Gray isn’t afraid of playfulness. I like that in a writer. It shows good command. Make no mistake, we are in the hands of an accomplished writer ‐ Glyn Parry’ ‐ Townsville Bulletin, March 2013

This year, the anthology will also profile two distinguished bush writers: the multi‐award‐winning Graham Fredriksen, who tragically passed away in 2010, and Australian storyteller extraordinaire Henry Lawson. Both of these talented writers were handpicked by the 2013 editor, David Campbell. Much like its precursor, AWBV 2013 is committed to showcasing Australia’s diverse literary landscape. In this way, it offers an opportunity to engage with such a unique artform, while also bringing together the many, but potentially disparate, bush communities represented by these works. About the editor David Campbell began taking writing seriously in 2001, and won his first bush poetry award the year after. Since then, he has gone on to win three Tamworth Blackened Billy Awards, three Bundaberg Bush Lanterns, two Boree Logs, the Bronze Swagman, two Henry Lawson Society of NSW Awards, a North Pine Camp Oven, the Rolf Boldrewood Award, four successive Victorian Bush Championships, and two NSW Championships. He has contributed to three poetry books for children, and in 2007 published Skycatcher, an anthology of original Australian bush verse, and Morning Light, a collection of prize-winning short stories. His writing has been published in a number of books and magazines, including The Best Australian Stories 2005, Award Winning Australian Writing 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, and Award Winning Bush Verse and Stories 2012.

A selection of short stories, articles, and poetry written by the author over a period of 30 years, many previously published in newspapers, magazines, and journals, and are here collected in book form for the first time. The stories examine the relationships between often‐predatory men and the women they lovelessly and manipulatively use. In one story, a woman sleeps with the boorish husband of her best friend. In others, the narrator’s friend dies of cancer and the husband falls apart, then reassembles himself most cheerfully around a much younger replacement; a girl’s German lesson turns into loveless sex; and a grandfather molests his own granddaughter. The poems treat similar themes, with grace and a clinical eye. The non‐fiction pieces include a wry if slightly overwrought examination of being a student of French in Nice; evocation of life in Carlton before World War II; and evocation of life in Caulfield around World War II. About the author Miriam Kuna, teacher, importer and retailer of high fashion, has also written many stories and poems over the years. She was the founder and proprietor of the Melbourne School of Fashion, and is the author of Australian Fashion: Starting your own boutique. Apart from receiving graduate and postgraduate qualifications from the University of Melbourne, she has studied at the Sorbonne, Paris and the University of Nice.

August 2013 New Title Release Taxing Resource Rent explains in simple terms how taxation can be imposed on high profits of mineral resource operations without affecting investment decisions. Much confusion and misinformation surrounded the Australian government’s announcement in 2010 that it intended to impose a Resource Super Profits Tax (RSPT) on all mineral resource operations in Australia. It was to replace Australia’s pre‐existing traditional resource rent tax (RRT) on offshore petroleum projects but, in the event, a new RRT‐style tax was applied to coal and iron ore projects.

Misunderstanding and misconception are stripped away chapter by chapter in Taxing Resource Rent as Claude, minister responsible for taxation, is given a series of briefings by Hector, Claude’s trusted tax policy advisor. Hector’s briefings, which culminate in three practical design options for possible public consultation, show for example: how investment decisions are not affected if high profits are taxed via government’s sharing equally and immediately in negative and positive cash flow (cash flow taxation); how advantages and disadvantages change as design changes from cash flow taxation to RSPT‐style design to RRT‐style design; what the advantages and disadvantages are of alternative ways of treating under resource rent taxation regional government royalties based on value or volume of production; the conceptual framework (and associated practical design) that allows both income taxation and resource rent taxation to be applied to mineral resource operations while leaving investment decision‐making unaffected.

August 2013 New Title Release Intuition is the most powerful yet under‐used tool in the body In her new book, The Voice of Intuition, Sydney journalist and best selling author Emily Chantiri helps readers to tap into their intuition. Chantiri weaves a personal, narrative tale on how listening to her intuition helped her through her life. After being awoken by a powerful message in a dream, Emily embarks on a journey that takes her half way across the world in search of answers. Her journey shows us how we can awaken the internal voice latent in us all. “We’ve all been in situations where we’ve had to make important decisions. Often your gut instinct tells you to go one way but your head is pushing you to go another way. It’s the same every time; when you have that feeling of knowing that you shouldn’t do something, but go against your better judgement, and then regret it. This inbuilt sense of uneasiness is your very own internal alarm and protection. Any uneasiness you feel around a situation or person is your intuition warning you. I believe intuition is the most powerful and under‐used tool we have in the human mind. Why? Because intuition acts as your guide and is your internal protection. It takes a lot of courage to listen to your intuition. No‐one has your best interest at heart more than you do; listen to your intuition. The purpose of this book is to give people hope and to believe in their dreams and listen to their inner voice.” About the Author Emily Chantiri is a best‐selling author and journalist. She is a regular contributor to a number of publications, including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Financial Review and BRW Magazine. Emily is the author of four books, including two bestsellers, The Money Club and Financially Fit for Life. Emily’s book sales have exceeded 60,000 across the globe.

Rarely does someone go overseas for a holiday with friends and come back as someone who has survived a terrorist attack and an atrocity whose aftermath resembled an horrendous war zone. Rarely does someone survive a blast as devastating as the Bali bombing on 12th October 2002 that killed 202 innocent people, including 88 Australians. Andrew Csabi has survived gracefully and admirably. While he continues to deal with his injuries ten years on, he is so thankful to be alive: so thankful to be able to share his story with people and continue to share a drink or two with mates. He is a true inspiration who moves people to the core with his presence and so often moves them to tears when he speaks of his experiences. He has looked death squarely in the eye and has refused to be beaten. He has smelled the stench of chemicals and burning flesh, heard the screams and cries for help, seen the tears, the anguish and heartbreak of family members who lost loved ones … many who continue to suffer to this day. From that moment on, his life would never be the same as it was. Andy Csabi is, by any measure, an inspirational Australian who I am proud to say is a mate. And mateship is what helped him survive the horror of the Bali bombings. Peter Overton, Channel 9

CONGRATULATIONS Australian Novel wins International Award for Debut Novel Brisbane author, Ian Walkley, was today (1st June) presented with the 2013 IRDA Award for Best Mystery/Suspense for his debut novel, No Remorse. The IRDA Awards have been established to recognise outstanding indie published books from around the globe. The Awards were presented in New York at Book Expo America, the world’s second biggest publishing and book show. Judges for this prestigious international award include a development director from 20th Century Fox, the publicity director for Penguin, a Senior Editor from Kirkus Reviews and other industry experts. The judges described the book as: “A suspenseful adventure thriller that provides a sinister commentary on human conscience and the price people will let others pay for their own gain.” Brisbane resident, Ian Walkley, began writing No Remorse in 2008, realising a lifelong dream of becoming an author, with his edge-of-your-seat style being compared to the likes of Lee Child, Robert Ludlum and Tom Clancy. A market researcher for much of his career, it was not until Walkley’s children had almost finished school that he determined to bring that dream to reality. “With my family growing up, the sale of my business and a couple of my friends having had health scares, it made me realize that I didn’t want to end up on my deathbed wondering whether I could have written a novel. So I took the plunge, “ said Walkley. His debut novel No Remorse, has had widespread international recognition as a fast paced, non stop action thriller, and when asked about his inspiration for the book Walkley states, “Everywhere – other books, movies, TV or simply quirky people I meet or see in the street. Travel is great for the imagination too.”

Ali Cobby-Eckermann’s Too Afraid to Cry is garnering a lot of media interest. She will be featured in the Melbourne Writers Festival in August. Au

Too Afraid to Cry is a memoir that, in bare blunt prose and piercingly lyrical verse, gives witness to the human cost of policies that created the Stolen Generations of Indigenous people in Australia. It is a narrative of good and evil, terror and happiness, despair and courage. It is the story of a people profoundly wronged, told through the frank eyes of a child, and the troubled mind of that child as an adult, whose life was irretrievably changed by being tricked away from her family and adopted into a German Lutheran family. What makes this book sing is not only Ali Cobby‐Eckermann’s strong and unique narrative voice and her ability to cut to the essence of things in her poetry, but also the astounding courage with which she leads the reader through the complex account of a life in free‐ fall and a journey to wholeness through reconnection with her birth family and its ageless culture and wisdom. This is a brave book, written by a woman who has faced her demons, transformed her suffering into a work of art, and found her true sitting place in the world. www.dennisjones.com.au Find us on Facebook Dennis Jones & Associates

To be launched on 25th August 2013 at the Melbourne Writer's Festival JRR Tolkien's inspiration for his bestselling books, The Lord of the Rings, has always been a mystery. Tolkien himself stated that his ideas came to him as though they already existed, but he couldn't name their source. For generations countless researchers and biographers have sought to identify Tolkien's inspiration without success. Now, at last, the answer is at hand. Abyssinia (modern day Ethiopia) was an ancient Christian Empire that was one of the world's four greatest powers after the time of Christ, but it became isolated by the rise of Islam. Besieged in its highland fortress, it became a land untouched by the passage of time. It survived as the only part of Africa that was not colonized by European powers, and became internationally prominent in the years immediately prior to Tolkien's writing because of the Italian war in 1935. Home to a 3,000 year old dynasty of kings and the horse‐riding prowess of the Oromo tribe, Abyssinia's history is rich and varied The legends of its greatest saints are unique, and around its borders it faced powerful enemies. The Real Middle‐earth: The Origins of The Lord of the Rings reveals fascinating insights into Tolkien and the ancient realm of Abyssinia, and makes connections between them that will leave you astounded. About the Author Michael Muhling was born in Perth in 1971. He began reading The Lord of the Rings when he was ten years old, and has been a fan of Tolkien ever since. Mike subsequently became an avid reader of the fantasy genre, but Tolkien remained his favourite author because of the depth and detail in his stories. Several years ago Mike and his wife began taking a keen interest in Ethiopia, and in 2005 Mike identified the connection between Tolkien and Ethiopia (Abyssinia). Since then they have travelled to Ethiopia three times, thoroughly enjoying its history, culture and hospitality. Mike lives in Perth, Australia, with his wife and two children.

It is the story of a collection of fearless pioneers who discovered this iconic big‐wave beach and made it their own. It is the story of Australian surfing, from its amateur roots, through the rebellious 1960s and the country soul era of the early 1970s to the professionalism of today.

It is the story of how a tiny cottage industry became a global empire. Most of all, it is the stories of the people who surf at Bells, especially those who make the annual Easter pilgrimage and compete for the most coveted trophy on the world tour. August 2013 New Title Release Nearly Impossible Dreams is a unique poetry book written by talented 10 year old author, Tara Finn. It includes a collection of works composed by Tara between the ages of 8 to 10 years old. Not only does Tara love to play with words but she uses poetry to convey her thoughts and feelings. It is intriguing to see the mind of a child expressed in this form. This combined with Tara’s creativity and ability to recognise the elements of a poem at such a young age makes the book even more captivating. The book uses illustrations by Michelle Harris to depict the essence of the poems to a beautiful effect. The poems appeal to school children; schools and educational organisations; libraries; universities; and poetry enthusiasts. It supports and encourages young Australian writers to achieve their dreams. Tara’s talent was originally recognised through Forming Circles Pty Ltd which is an Australian organisation committed to creating social and ethical investment success stories. Founder and CEO of Forming Circles, Renata Cooper, said, “The book is an inspiring, uplifting, at times dark yet enlightening journey of a 10 year old. Tara truly represents the potential of upcoming Australian writing talent that we are proud to support.”

About the author Tara Finn has been reading and writing since (almost) the day she was born. Her parents joked she came out with a book in her hand, cranky because she was up to a really good part. She is currently in Year 6 and looking forward to finally getting to High School. She has won four Sydney Youth Writing Awards, and been published in numerous publications. Tara’s absolute favourite things in life are chocolate, boiled rice and netball, but not necessarily in that order. She has a younger brother and sister who drive her to distraction, a mother who makes her brush her hair and teeth (imagine!), and an Irish father who sings loud Irish songs in public just to embarrass her. Yes, she is normal in some ways!
