July 2016 A Barn Stormer of a BEA this year? Not quite as Chicago is a distant place of USA in the minds of the Manhattan crew. I spent the first few days at the IDPF and then one day on the show floor. Whist the show was smaller and the crowds lower it still was a hard trek through the lines of adoring readers at the author appearances. I was able to have the same B2B meetings as if it was in NYC, however I got the sense that there is a real heart to what we do by bringing shows like BEA & ABA to spaces outside of NYC & Sydney. The ultimate question becomes as to whether shows are simply another platform for revenue, or an attempt to bring our industry positives to a wider range of cities where readers and booksellers and book creators reside. I did not see many Australian booksellers this year at BEA; Fullers was well represented. So after hearing Hannah Kent the other night at the LEB Conference I was prompted to recall where was the first public library I remember as well as the first bookshop I patronised. I started as a child going to the Malvern library in the 60s and being able to borrow books on Motor Sport to supplement my Moto Cycle news that came by sea from the UK. The library borrowings were my way of finding news on the last year's Formula 1 heroics of people like Jack Brabham in Europe and the Indy 500 in America. My first bookseller I think was Jeffreys Bookshop in Malvern at a time when Ian and Max Jeffrey were probably still at school as students. Keith Jeffrey their father ran the bookshop and it was on the opposite side of Glenferrie Road to where it is now located. The current owner is Linda Tassone. I should mention my parents bought the Prospero Library High Street Malvern in the 1950's when private Libraries were as popular as Public Libraries. My parents turned the premises into a Secondhand Furniture shop. One of the first books I bought was the story of Phar Lap the heroic racehorse; it cost 28/6 in 1964. Does "titlepage" limit book sourcing by Australian bookshops? I have been soul searching as to why businesses like Booktopia and The Book Depository are so strong with local consumers. Probably because consumers made two things clear in local book purchasing; if they are like their US contemporaries they would choose Amazon as their

Words from the Wise first web search tool. Special order traffic existed prior to the Internet and prior to the growth of openly sourcing information; the bookseller response of "it is not on titlepage" seems to have predicted the limit of searching, whereas consumers will find the supplier they want via the internet. I am told that 80% of The Book Depository customer base is in Australia. Whilst I have never met anyone from BD I get told this number from many sources. I can't apologise that our books are not on "titlepage" it is (as explained before) simply that "titlepage" is not designed for smaller local publishers and the distributors for those publishers. Another observation is to look at what is being done at industry level when the open market is established by the government. The "mouth music" from Canberra will be that the "open market" for books will assist local consumers in the area of pricing and prompt availability. What is the contingency planning when this becomes law? The attitude of "we are the book trade and are cultural gatekeepers" does not wash with consumers in general; unless I am totally wrong. It is like we are totally tooled to Beta when Pal became the standard. On a more pleasant subject I read the uncorrected PDF of the new biography of Cynthia Nolan last night. This is to be published by Melbourne Books and is an insight into a life and times of so many of Australia's foremost in writing and Art. I had no idea that at one stage on Hydra Cynthia Nolan told George Johnston to go back and write something from Elwood - this was before his legendary My Brother Jack. In Charmian Clift's "Peel Me A Lotus" the Nolans are depicted under another name. The circumstances of Cynthia's suicide are so sad. The book will get very high review coverage in mainstream literary columns as well as the Art world. It is sure to be a worthy contender for the Stella's next award round. Please help us sell many. Happy reading DJ

Elephants are enormous, unmistakable — and irreplaceable. No other creature has such a long‐shared history with humanity while remaining largely undomesticated. But today, despite 4000 years of coexistence, we seem determined to destroy them. It’s estimated that a wild elephant is lost to the world every fifteen minutes. Each is an individual that can never be replaced. Reflections of Elephants is a celebration, seen through the lens of acclaimed photographer Bobby‐Jo Clow. From the rusty, red plains of Tsavo to the lush, green forests of Northern Thailand, Bobby‐Jo has captured every aspect of elephant life, from first step to untimely death. Her astonishing images have been paired with the words of writers, poets, scientists, conservationists, students and everyday people, to produce unique reflections of this most iconic animal.

Author Information Bobby-Jo Clow is a zookeeper and professional photographer. Her work has been featured in publications around the globe, including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Times, The New York Post, The Huffington Post, Paris Match and Africa Geographic. The Bogle‐Chandler mystery is recognised as one of the most baffling cold cases in the annals of crime. The victims, brilliant physicist Dr Gilbert Bogle and Mrs Margaret Chandler, the wife of his colleague, were found dead beside a picturesque river in Sydney, Australia. Investigators found no evidence to suggest how they had died. The bizarre manner in which the bodies were covered only added to the mystery. The police immediately suspected Geoffrey Chandler as the killer. But despite drawing on the expertise of police and forensic agencies around the world, the coroner was unable to determine how the victims met their fate. In his award‐winning film and book on the case, the author presented new evidence, which provided a solution to the mystery. This revised edition, brimming with photos and original documents, features the explosive testimony of a previously unknown witness to the deaths ‐ a testimony that has thrust the case back onto the coroner’s desk.

Author Information Producer-director-writer Peter Butt has spent three decades as a documentary filmmaker. His credits include over 30 hours of production for Australian broadcasters: ABC, SBS, ATN7, TCN9, and international broadcasters: BBC, Chanel 4 UK, Discovery Channel, Learning Channel, National Geographic and History Channel. His Logie award winning 2006 documentary Who Killed Dr Bogle & Mrs Chandler? was based on his own theory and solved this 40 year old elusive case and is the highest rating documentary in ABC TV history.

Clownland is a journey through an unusual country to discover what its extraordinary inhabitants have learnt about life, loss, and happiness. Injured, and living on the edge of country town, Lanigan embarks on an unconventional, at moments disastrous, but ultimately inspiring guided tour of this strange land‐ Clownland. This is not a text book. This is not an objective, academic look at an artform. This is not a book that will teach you how to become a clown ‐ though it might help. This is a guided tour, a travelogue, through a part of the world ‐ Clownland ‐ where we meet those employed in studying the stupid, the ridiculous, the clumsy and deluded, both beautiful and ugly, to hold a mirror up so that we can laugh at ourselves. You don't need to love clowns to love this book.

Author Information Judith Lanigan uses her experience as a circus artist and her love of research to create circus related fiction and show structures for circus performance. She is a novelist whose work has been optioned for feature film. Judith Lanigan’s first novel 'A True History of the Hula Hoop' received an Australian Society of Author mentorship award for unpublished authors and was short-listed for the Varuna Award for unpublished authors before being withdrawn due to an offered publishing contract with Picador. Judith Lanigan has also published a comprehensive study of the Hula Hoop, its history, influences, development and artistes. Judith Lanigan writes and dramaturges circus for performance, particularly show structure, which allows for the use of skill specific, and clown specific acts. Her work is usually based on historical research and her training in contemporary clown gives her a particular interest in creating show structures and storyline that allow for the essential nature of the clown character.

Available Now The idea of sending a soccer team into a major war zone might be regarded as the height of lunacy, but in mid‐1967 the Australian government approved an invitation to the Australian Soccer Federation to take part in the National Day football tournament in Saigon in the midst of the Vietnam War. While this story is fairly widely known among the football community, it has little resonance beyond it and the young players who took part have received no formal recognition. Six of the team that won the competition, the first international trophy won by Australia, were part of the Socceroos squad that qualified for the World Cup in West Germany in 1974. Australian teams returned to Vietnam in 1970 and 1972 as part of the preparation for the successful qualification campaign and the team spirit forged in very difficult circumstances helped carry Rale Rasic’s squad to the World Cup. This book retells the story and explains its absence from the national narrative about sport and relations with Asia. They talk about bonding exercises now and rugby league players went horse riding at Calga, but we went to war zones, much like Afghanistan or Iraq are now. - Ray Richards, World Cup Socceroo who made his international debut in Vietnam at 21. Author Information Roy Hay is an Honorary Fellow at Deakin University, where he taught for 25 years, and a partner in Sports and Editorial Services Australia. To abandoned child, Colin Stone, World War Two grants an escape from the mean streets of St. Kilda. A natural warrior, his talents qualify him to join an elite group of young men. The shining ones. Who fly Spitfires against Nazi tyranny. Rising with them, from the top Colin Stone looks down on a world that has doomed his first true friends. Bringing to vivid life true Australian war history and events, “No Greater Love” is a saga in the classic mold, featuring the drama, beauty, heroism and horror of one young man’s war journey through stunning Malta, Egypt and North Africa, Sicily, England and Europe. It is a portrait of the once‐in‐a‐lifetime characters the war places on his path, of the tragic, wholesale waste of war, on occasion even the profound humanity of his enemy, and of his evolving perception of his world for what it is. Though standing on its own as a ripping and also highly emotional read, “No Greater Love” is the third and final chapter of Justin Sheedy’s now widely and warmly cherished World War Two novel trilogy begun with “Nor the Years Condemn” and “Ghosts of the Empire”. Continuing and now concluding their portrait of shining young men destined never to grow old, “No Greater Love” is the full and rich story of Part 1’s reader‐favourite character, Aussie rough diamond Colin Stone (‘Stoney’). It is the story of his war, of his loyalty and devotion to his friends, of his enduring love for the mother who abandoned him, and his dreams of being held by her once again.

Author Information Justin Sheedy was born in 1968 and grew up in North Epping in Sydney's north-west suburbs. He was educated by the Little Sisters of No Mercy, then by the Jesuits, and obtained a degree in fine arts, qualifying him to drive a cab. He has worked in radio, for a while as a go-go dancer as well as for the Australian Public Service though has since made a full recovery. If you have ever worked in the public service, you will understand. If you still do work in the public service, Justin remembers you, so you better have been nice to him as he's writing books now. He lives happily in Sydney.

As the storm of World War II breaks, Mick O'Regan is a peaceful Sydney working‐class boy. Yet he and the shining youth of his generation are cursed to enter a world of high‐speed life and death. Like first‐time Aussie backpackers they cross the planet to save the British Empire, their job on arrival the most dangerous of the War: flying for Royal Air Force Bomber Command. Based on a true Australian war story only now being brought to life by author Justin Sheedy's vivid historical fictions, "Ghosts of the Empire" is also a story of young people living life to the full while they can ‐ in a blacked‐out world where dance partners, sex and death flow in equal abundance. Though standing on its own as the white‐knuckle excitement saga that it is, "Ghosts of the Empire" is the much‐anticipated sequel to "Nor the Years Condemn", Sheedy's highly acclaimed story of shining young men destined never to grow old. 'Ghosts', it is said, are the spirits of those who die violently, tragically, or when ripped from life too young. "Ghosts of the Empire" is their story.

At the beginning of World War II, Britain was in the deepest trouble imaginable. 5 minutes flying time away crouched a monster. Alone against it, Britain called out to her Empire. For pilots. From all corners of that Empire, they volunteered. Only the best & brightest were chosen. Australian Daniel Quinn was one of these young men who came to fly against the monster. They had a 1‐in‐3 chance of survival. "Nor the Years Condemn" is based on the true story of the young Australians who flew Spitfires against the all‐conquering might of Nazi Germany. In their late teens and early‐20s, for the job at hand they had to be the 'shining ones', rendering the death of so many of them doubly heart‐rending for the reader. Daniel Quinn, flanked by the often hilarious young men of his elite ilk, leaves his peacetime life behind to fight tyranny in this portrait of doomed, brilliant youth. With in‐the‐cockpit flying sequences that readers have described as 'cinematic', "Nor the Years Condemn" is also a story of the mothers cursed to relinquish their wonderful sons to war, of first love, of strategic deception and betrayal, of brotherhood and once‐in‐a‐lifetime friendship on a knife's edge. It is a story of shining young men destined never to grow old, and of those who do: the survivors 'condemned by the years', and to their memory of friends who remain forever young. A Darker Magic This Way Comes is the first tale in Merlin’s Secrets, a series of five books. It is an epic and fast-paced story of love and war, knights and wizardry, angels and goddesses and the cosmic clash between Darkness and Light. It reimagines the Arthurian legend, as narrated by Merlin. But who is this Merlin? Set in the turbulent and brutal times of the fifth and sixth century, Merlin also writes of his love for a fairy from the Otherworld, Emily Charlotte Hughes, a high school student from twenty first century Exeter in Devon. Throughout the hundred years of the Merlin’s Secrets series, Emily and Merlin swap the narrator role to give the reader both contemporary and historical insights into the characters and the story. But the young lovers will be separated by their complex destinies and will only have a short amount of time together. The characters are engaging; Emily lives the life of a modern intelligent sixteen year old, yet she falls in love with someone who has a squillion hits on Google, and whom she knows has been dead for fifteen hundred years. Merlin, like an ancient prophet, meditates in caves where he has been known to talk with archangels. He has the ability to become entangled with evil and not be tarnished by it. In A Darker Magic This Way Comes, the young lovers engage with Moloch, the Prince of Lies, and Morgana, a sorceress of immense power, when Emily, whom they call the Chosen One, is abducted. She has to find the answer to why she is “chosen” in this exhilarating mix of adventure, myth, and magic where nothing is as it first seems. Carmel Niland’s remarkable retelling of the perennially popular Arthurian legend will entrance her readers; history buffs will appreciate the archaeologically and historically accurate backdrop, while fantasy fans will love the twists and turns of her storyline.

Author Information Carmel Niland, a successful senior bureaucrat in NSW, was for over thirty years an outspoken civil servant involved in leading agencies on women, racial equality, human rights, disability services and child protection. Surprisingly, parallel to her life in the public sector was an inner world deeply rooted within English history and within that her particular interest in the great Arthurian legends. Carmel lives in Sydney, this is her first novel. Publicity with Deb McInnes Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

“There have been extraordinary revelations at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse but the testimony of survivor Joan Isaacs was particularly confronting” … Joan is one of “Australia’s heroes” … one of the “brilliant voices … shining through the gloom”. —Van Badham, The Guardian, Dec 26, 2013 Joan Katherine Isaacs is a wife, mother and doting grandmother. Born in 1953 into a Catholic family, Joan was the middle child of migrant parents. At the age of fifteen Joan’s normal and happy life changed irreparably when the chaplain at her school groomed her for his own sexual gratification. Despite the trauma of her teenage years, Joan became a teacher, initially working in primary schools and later focussing on children with special needs and learning difficulties. Silenced by her abuser and later by the Catholic Church through their Towards Healing program, Joan was finally able to speak in 2013 when she gave evidence at the Royal Commission into the Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. To Prey and to Silence is Joan Katherine Isaacs’ own powerful account of her battle to be heard.

Author Information Hi. We are Kath and Liz and together we are Simple Nourishment. We're two busy and active mums who share a love of cooking, chaotic family gatherings and early morning runs. Our passion is simple, fast, nutritious snack food that doesn't compromise on taste and that can keep us and our families going between meals. Our recipes are allergy conscious, not allergy focused. Our cooking generally revolves around tweaking old favourite recipes (changing and increasing their nutritional value) as well as developing brand new recipes of our own. We also enjoy exploring the more recent trend of raw snacks. We truly believe that what we put into our bodies reflects our focus and energy each day. All of our products contain wholesome body-fuelling ingredients which are all easily accessible and available at the supermarket, such as nuts, seeds, coconut products, fruit and superfoods. Our recipes are free of refined sugars, refined flours and most are also gluten free (or can be easily adapted to be gluten free). You don't need to be a baker or fantastic in the kitchen to make our recipes. They are all simplistic and easy to follow and the only kitchen appliance you will need is a food processor, for some. This book describes sawmills and a complex series of timber tramways which operated in southern Tasmania during the period 1850 to 1974. It covers the area from Franklin (45 km south of Hobart) to Cockle Creek ‐ the most southerly settlement in Tasmania, and includes Bruny Island. Details of the ships and barges which carried the products of the many sawmills in the area are given, together with an insight into the living conditions and the innovative methods that were used to solve many problems. Gauges of the timber tramways varied from 2 ft 6 in to 6 ft, but the most common gauges were 3 ft 6 in and 4 ft 6 in. Over a dozen steam locomotives were used, including two American Shay geared types, and many of ingenious local manufacture. Three Hobart engineering firms supplied steam and internal‐combustion locomotives of unusual design to many of the sawmillers. The maps, prepared by Mike McCarthy, show the tramways, mills, roads, waterways, and contours. The book includes over 170 photographs, 21 maps, references, and index.

The Port Phillip Expedition of 1803 was the precursor to the expansion of Britain's colony in New South Wales into south‐east Australia. It led to the permanent settlement of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) and, in time, to the creation of the colony of Victoria. The expedition, led by Lieutenant Colonel David Collins, was despatched by the British Colonial Secretary Lord Hobart after he was warned by Governor King of New South Wales that convicts at Sydney were planning a rebellion, and that the French might be intending to make a settlement somewhere on Bass Strait. In October 1803 Collins landed at Port Phillip with 300 convicts on the warship Calcutta, intending to establish Hobart. When his site at Sullivan Bay proved unsuitable, Collins transferred his convicts and free settlers to the Derwent River in southern Van Diemen's Land. Among Collins' party were men like John Pascoe Fawkner who later left Van Diemen's Land to found Melbourne. The descendants of others who had also sailed on the Calcutta settled the Western District and began the 'golden age' of pastoral Victoria. This is the fascinating account of a little‐known episode in Australia's early history.

Having sold our house we were on the move, rental truck to load the furniture, skip bin to discard unwanted items and the excitement of a new adventure ahead of us. As my mate Jamie wasn’t working at the time he came to help. After a long successful day we had packed the furniture, cleaned the house and filled the skip bin. Awesome. Time for a well earned refreshment. Whilst standing next to the skip bin, sipping on an ice cold beer, reflecting on our achievement, Jamie said something that changed my life. He said, “ Maude (that’s my nickname) at some point all the stuff in this skip bin was so important you had to buy it, now you’re just throwing it away.” WOW, I was speechless. It made me think, not about what was in the skip bin, more importantly about what I had given up to get the things in the skip bin – time with my family, friends, myself – money that I could have invested or spent on more worthy endeavours. Have you ever thought about what is in your skip bin, what you have given up (time, money, relationships) to purchase things that you only end up throwing away. Was it worth it? An Empty Skip Bin is a practical way to look at your life and reflect on how you use your time and money. To make the choices that will lead you to having a more fulfilling focused meaningful life, with a skip bin that is empty, or at least one that has fewer items in it. It’s your time to Thrive not just Survive.

Retrospect is a fast paced dystopian fiction novel set in Brisbane fifteen years into our future. The complex plot delves into a number of key societal issues, namely the consequences of humans trying to play GOD through Science and Technology exploitation. The quest for eternal life and the power of ‘Big Brother’ are two central matters that combine to create a chaotic, high energy ride. Brief Synopsis: The protagonist is a 15 year old young man called Noah. The story unwinds through his conversational narration. Noah is insightful, witty and at times quite humorous. His portrayal is told as a retrospective look into his attempts to survive the calamity of the ‘new’ world. As the plot unwinds, we discover the antagonist (Setag) has systematically hijacked an entire population using his manipulation of the Technological age. Through his cruel Dictator style leadership, he obliterates anyone who stands in his way. Children also disappear in large numbers, leading those surviving on a mission to uncover the ‘truth’. This leads to a number of jaw shattering discoveries and sends the story to the University of Queensland Campus itself. Aimed at the young adult audience, there are a number of clever additions to the text, including a cyber‐language that the reader can decode for themselves. Also the character relationship web provides a number of twists and turns. It is never completely obvious who is good, who is bad and who is downright wicked. The fictitious plot also closely mirrors the predictions of what many perceive to be our future, giving the exciting tale a strong dose of reality.

Reality and fantasy collide when Noah and Gabby meet. Both have secrets: they are not human, cannot be killed and are falling in love with each other. Gabby Valis is a regular fifteen year old; her biggest worries in life are friends, boys and her annoying brother Zac. But her life is shattered the day she finds out she is not human. She had no idea she belonged to a secret species which has evolved from humans; ‘Xaveriques’. After being hit by a car, her body is forced to heal itself, and Gabby’s powers are unleashed… ‘I died this morning. At exactly 8.17 am my heart stopped beating and I lay cold and still in the street. At 8.24 am my heart resumed beating, I jumped up from the dusty pavement and ran home. Confused? Well, that makes two of us.

Author Information Karyn comes from a background in teaching and theatre. Teaching drama, and writing and directing Theatre in Education productions. She’s always loved creating stories and characters, so completed a Masters in Creative Writing at Macquarie University. It was here that her journey of writing Choosing Xaverique began. Now, six years later, she is just a little bit thrilled it has finally been published! Karyn is currently working on the sequel to Choosing Xaverique, slated for completion later this year.

Second Look

New edition of multi‐award‐winning author Libby Gleeson’s powerful first novel, which was first published in 1984. Featuring a new introduction by the author, it is illustrated with sensitive line drawings by Beattie Alvarez. Twelve year old Eleanor doesn’t want to move from her home in the cool New England region of New South Wales, to the hot dry Western Plains and a new home on her mother’s family farm. One day, in the old schoolhouse on the farm, she makes an amazing discovery, finding her grandmother’s diary, written when she was Eleanor’s own age. Eleanor doesn’t remember her grandmother Elizabeth, who died when she was three: but as she explores the diary and its secrets, she begins to understand not only her grandmother’s life and personality, but also to appreciate the special qualities of the region where she lives. But her grandmother’s diary will prove to be much more than just absorbing reading material, when great danger threatens Eleanor and her brothers… Vividly written and grippingly told, this first novel by a writer who went on to become one of Australia’s most beloved and acclaimed authors, received numerous awards: Children's Book Council of Australia: Highly Commended 1985; Angus & Robertson Writers for the Young Fellowship: Winner 1985; South Australian Literature Award Shortlisted 1985.

Author Information Libby Gleeson is a highly acclaimed writer of picture books and longer fiction for children and adolescents. In the same year she received the Nan Chauncy Award. Libby is a former Chair of the Australian Society of Authors and is currently the Chair of WestWords, a company formed to develop literature experiences and writing for young people in Western Sydney.

At 11 years old, I had a lot of things: joy, pity, horror, fantasy, frustration and so on. I would love to share them with everyone around the world. These short stories, poems, essays, fantasy and recounts were written in my spare time. They are not intended to be as good as a scholar's work. I, as an 11 year old at the time, based these writings for fellow kids. I'm not a professional writer so not everything is perfect. So read my book and you will definitely miss your childhood in some way.
