Dennis Jones & Associates The Distributor for Australian Independent Publishers

August 2017 We all know that brown is the new black and that we are now told to believe that “screen fatigue” will save the printed book; my message today however is about living under the model of a “disrupted paradigm” and relish the thought of adapting. In the work of being an independent book distributor we continually have books that don’t fit the paradigm asserted by the major houses and booksellers trained in the procedure of the monthly offer. I can’t help it. Most recently we have been disruptors with two titles and then hopefully one other which we are yet to contract. The Siren’s Call by Yvette Wroby (Malarkey Publishing) is the first disruptor. Due to certain circumstances the launch was set for 11th May – two days after our physical stock arrived. We tried to circumvent the monthly new title release by sending out special emails as well as special one off metadata sends to enable the book to be discovered. The publisher (John Harms) has been asked to stave off the media until first week of June to enable more stores to place their purchase orders. The other is the first ever Women’s Footy Almanac 2017 (Malarkey Publishing) – I think this one is going sell really well and Australia wide as the Women's Footy competition has been an outstanding consumer success – much like the Big Bash in terms of following. We have listed in this catalogue without a jacket image – the jacket image is still being painted & designed as at yesterday. The complete book will go to the printer next week and our bound stock for immediate release will be with us in two weeks for those eager consumers all over Australia. The final disruptor (which I hope we do contract) is a book titled Jane & Me - My Austen Heritage by Caroline Jane Knight. You may have read the Weekend Australian with feature articles about the 200th Anniversary of the death of Jane Austen – our book is by her only living relative. The negotiations started this week – media by Debbie McInnes, printing at McPhersons, hardback edition for the authors own purposes and we will have a C format at $29.95 This morning I sent the publisher a critical path analysis of the 10 key targets to achieve before the media onslaught from July 1st. If we get the book we will start pushing as soon as the agreement is signed – we are getting virtually a three week sell in period. By the way we will have samples at our booth at the ABA in June. “Paradigm Disruptors”- yes all around us and the fact is consumers don’t give a toss about the book trades obsession with orderly sell in models. Similarly on our web site we don’t advise putative publishers to short cut the system. “Screen fatigue” - Who comes up with these pieces of trivia? The UK publishers are suggesting that “screen fatigue” is the reason print book sales are improving. Bollocks.

The Disruptive Paradigm Who will tell the Fairfax journalists going under the chop that consumers have “screen fatigue” and there is a swing back to print? We all live in a world of disruption and we have to adjust to an ever changing world. From the backlist; don’t be caught short with stocks of Midnight Oil. The Circle tour has commenced as well as the book now appearing on the “merch” site; about time. And from a long time ago; I never thought we would have a title to offer from Stan Breeden; have a look at the 2018 Wildflowers of Australia published by Steven Nowakowski, I look forward to seeing it. And on the shortlists for book awards from truly independent publishers. Spellbound is shortlisted for the 2017 CBCA Eve Pownall Award for Information Books; (this is another case of the disruptive paradigm – we buy the book firm sale so we have to on sell like that. The book is printed in China which is likely to be unlike many of the shortlisted titles. Waiting by Philip Salom: (Puncher & Wattmann) has been longlisted for the Miles Franklin Award 2017. Going Out Backwards by Ross Fitzgerald & Ian McFadyen (Hybrid) for the Russell Prize for Humour Writing 2017. And good news for the fans of Grafton Everest is that a fifth adventure will be coming from Hybrid Publishers in 2018. Just proves that real independent publishing is visible at so many levels – both congratulations and best hopes for these books to proceed to either award winners or shortlisting. (We are trying to also have a Miles Franklin on our list to coincide with the Miles Franklin shortlist – it will be Childhood at Brindabella (ETT – Absolute Australian Classic Publishing) and will be across printed stock, global POD and global eBook). Farewell to Books in Print and Chris Harrington and Deborah Holland who have owned the shop for the past 28 years. I have to say these are two of the nicest people you would want to meet. They have both adored their special book trade positions over the years and now go on the Bookseller Honour Roll of those who have moved to another part of life and its challenges. Farewell and I think I still owe Chris a bottle of Sangiovese from a Booksellers Conference on the Gold Coast maybe 10 years ago. Big books of the month Fabulous Phil – will have all the might and power of all those footy fellas who have written awesome paragraphs of support Best to all DJ

Caroline Jane Knight shares more than Jane Austen’s name and DNA. As a direct descendant of Jane’s brother, Edward Knight, Caroline is the last of the Austen Knight family to grow up at Chawton House on the estate where Jane Austen lived and enjoyed the most productive period of her writing career. Caroline explored the same places around Chawton House and its grounds as Jane did, dined at the same table in the same dining room, read in the same library and shared the same dream of independence. Caroline’s early life was filled with the delights of living in a sixteenth-century English manor, the good cheer of family gatherings and centuries-old Christmas traditions in the Great Hall of Chawton House, the beauty of a country life, and the joys of helping her Granny bake cakes and serve Jane Austen devotees in the Chawton House tea room. But when she was seventeen, Caroline and her family were forced to leave the home her family had lived in for centuries. Heartbroken, but determined to leave all things Austen behind her, Caroline eventually carved out a highly successful career in business. This is the story of Caroline’s tumultuous journey to success, her ultimate crisis, her rediscovery and embrace of her Austen heritage, and the creation of the Jane Austen Literacy Foundation.

Mick Woiwod

Most Victorians would agree that, yes, European settlement had indeed removed the Wurundjeri from their hunting grounds in the Yarra Valley in the first instance, but surely not from their very last acre later on in 1924. In 1863, after twenty-eight years of dispossession and the death of most of the Colony’s ‘first people’, a repentant government had returned 4,860 acres of land to its Wurundjeri people – they named it Coranderrk. Upon it, the survivors had enthusiastically built a village of twenty-three slab cottages with around it some 500 acres of cleared land grazed by a dairy herd, plus further paddocks devoted to wheat, oats and hops. Enter the ‘Black Hats of Melbourne’ a wealthy lobby-group committed to the introduction and release into the Victorian bush of such alien creatures as deer, hare, salmon and grouse. In 1874, intent upon additional introductions onto their land, these Black Hats had organised the dismissal of Coranderrk’s high-achieving manager. Then, when later informed that senior Elder William Barak, had shot five of their released deer they’d taken control of the Board for the Protection of Aborigines (BPA) and set about the expulsion of its residents to a remote location on the Murray. Standing four-square in their way had been William Barak who, by leading a series of deputations into Melbourne, had blocked every move by the Black Hats to close Coranderrk.Undeterred, these determined intruders had starved Coranderrk of funding and appointed a succession of scurrilous managers with instructions to run the station into the ground. The result was its closure in 1924.

Author Information Mick is a bricklayer by trade, now historian and author of over 20 Indigenous history books, including one novel ‘The Last Cry’ which was re-released recently as ‘Wrath of the Myndie’. Since he was a ‘young fellow’, Mick had an interest in Indigenous people but in his younger years he was never able to find anyone to talk to about this. He was well into his 40s by the time he felt he was developing an understanding of Aboriginal history, in particular the interactions between indigenous people and white settlers. At age 60, in 1989, he became a student at Latrobe University and majored in History, studying a range of areas related to indigenous history - Religion, Culture, Lifestyle. Mick works closely and with mutual respect, with Wurundjeri people of the Yarra Valley. Wurundjeri Elders have given him an honorary name - Murrup Ngulu - in recognition of his work. Together with his late wife Margaret, Mick was the Recipient of the Victorian Community History Award 2012. Mick and his wife were founding members of the Nillumbik Reconciliation Group (http://www.nrg.org.au/). Mick is the instigator and the activating force behind many projects which commemorate Indigenous people. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

The engrossing real life story of how Queen Victoria's favourite son, Prince Alfred, undertook the most ambitious Royal tour, only for Australia's overwhelming joy of having the first Royal on its shores jolted by his decadent behaviour, then shocked by an attempted assassination by a man trained as a priest. The British Empire's youngest and most distant outpost found itself at the epicentre of a new crime and empirical fears about the first inter-continental terrorist group, a conspiracy and a 'lone wolf '. In a resulting 'reign of terror' extraordinary steps were taken to safeguard security with laws on treason and sedition which even the Queen felt went too far, and the would-be assassin was hastily executed in a miscarriage of justice led by opportunistic politicians. This is an extraordinary and atmospheric weaving of the stories - some detailed for the first time - of royal intrigue, sexual appetite, religious bigotry, patriotic vengeance, naked ambition, national security and moral panic. They are stories of royals, immigrants, archbishops, republicans and the founding fathers of Australia and issues that remain with us today. Drawing on Royal, British and Australian archives, the compelling narrative embraces a pivotal time in the evolution of Australia, and on the 150th anniversary reveals how a minute of madness rocked the country to its foundations, with a legacy which helped shape Australia's history and continues to influence and challenge us today.

Author Information Steve Harris, a Tasmanian, has 30 years experience in journalism, print and online publishing, and high-performance organisations. He is the only person to have been editorial head of both of Melbourne’s major media groups: Editorin-Chief of the Herald and Weekly Times Group and Editor-in-Chief of The Age. He was also CEO of the Melbourne Football Club.

ESPECIALLY when it comes to food. You have better things to do than feel guilty about past meals and anxious about what you’re going to eat next. Six international artists are invited to a residency in southern Spain. What could possibly go wrong? Writer’s block and paintings of oranges. Love, lust, revenge. A sculptor left for dead on the side of a mountain. 'Part love story, part thriller and wholly page-turning, Dig Two Graves shows us once again that Morwood is a classy act.' - The Australian For readers who like their crime/thrillers gore-free and more refined. In the vein of Josephine Tey. Praise for Morwood’s novels: 'A perceptive and disturbing journey through the delicate web of human relationships ... Atmospheric and firmly rooted in her native Melbourne, this is a fascinating read.' - Val McDermid 'This may be the most original Australian crime novel debut since Barry Maitlands’s 'The Marx Sisters.'' - Australian Book Review 'Confirms Morwood’s status as one of the brightest new stars on the Australian crime fiction scene. Highly recommended.' - Canberra Times 'Engaging Oz whodunit... showing serious muscle beneath the civilities.' - Literary Review

This memoir, Bella and Chaim, is a flowing collage which embraces and mingles memory, historical record, fragments of the 1950s, real-time journal entries and musings on the light, dark, and potential, of being alive. The whole is a testament to the human spirit. For eighteen months from late 1943, Vidal’s parents lay in a small hole in the ground under a wood cutting machine in the backyard workshop of a retired Polish policeman in a suburb of occupied Warsaw. In claustrophobic dark, they waited while outside a world war raged. Their story is inspirational; it begins with life in Warsaw in loving families, transcends the catastrophic circumstances in which they meet, fall in love, are witness to the destruction of a way of life and the murder of their entire families, endure entombment, and concludes with liberation, and immigration to make a new life.

Author Information Born in a refugee camp in late 1945, Sara Vidal came to Melbourne early in 1949, graduated BARCH Melbourne University (1968) and joined the Victorian Public Service (1979–93). She has worked as an architect, human resources consultant, and consultant for not-for-profit organisations. She lives in Williamstown, Victoria, helps care for her 93year-old mother, enjoys and helps out with four grandchildren, and continues to research and write.

Phil Tagell is an ordinary footy fan and grass-roots volunteer who stood up for an injured player denied the aid of the stretcher when he was accidentally knocked unconscious in an under 18 practice game in early 2009. For his efforts, he was king-hit by the umpire who denied the player the use of the stretcher. The umpire had quite a history of threatening and carrying out violence but his employers, AFL Queensland, denied all knowledge of his history, ‘we knew nothing’ was their defence and for 2 fractures of the skull, permanent disabilities, 8 months off work, and considerable pain and suffering, all Phil got was a bill for their legal fees. So much for ‘protecting the head’, their only priority was to protect their brand and deny all liability. Phil appealed to Andrew Demetriou, then CEO of the AFL and despite his plea for some consideration, he only got a threat of more legal fees and bankruptcy. His 1000s of hours as a club volunteer, support for indigenous players, his 3 sons’ 800+ games and still going, his father’s career in footy and his membership of 4 clubs at various levels meant nothing to Demetriou. Read his story from his earliest days as a Magpies' supporter in Melbourne to his significant contribution to the game in Queensland and you will be shocked that he has been treated so shabbily as he has. Known as the ‘Patron Saint of Club Golfers’ throughout the world, Dr Frank Barney Gorton Stableford is recognised as one of the most prominent figures in the history of golf. Like the good doctor he was, Stableford introduced and developed a scoring system which greatly reduced the pain of bad play and increased the enjoyment of the game for golfers of all standards. Beyond golf, his achievements as a man of ideals and many talents provide us with shining examples of how to contribute to the world in which we live and make a difference through personal commitment. This fascinating book traces his family background from its industrial beginnings through the decades of tumultuous and peaceful times and his life in golf, medicine and war.

Peter Heerey AM QC was a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia for 18 years. While on the Court he also served as President of the Defence Force Discipline Appeal Tribunal and as a Deputy President of the Australian Competition Tribunal. After retirement he chaired the Australian Electoral Commission for five years. This is a story of life both on and off the Court. A member of the pre-baby boomer generation, Peter tells of growing up after the Second World War, University life and National Service in Tasmania in the 1950s, and some highlights, and lowlights, from 23 years at the Victorian Bar. On the Federal Court there is experience with major cases, some thoughts about the use of experts, and the writing of judgments. Peter and his wife Sally have been tireless travellers, especially by bicycle – ranging from the Camino de Santiago de Compostela to Budapest to New Zealand’s South Island.

This is the life story of a giant of Australian education, Roderick Ian West. It is befitting that the final chapter was written by his wife Janet after he passed in January 2016. Balmain boy, inspirational teacher and headmaster, Rod West transformed institutions by his inexorable focus on the people within them. For Rod, it was always people before process, teaching before educationalism and actions before words. His mantra was "The heart of education is the education of the heart" and he touched the lives of thousands. "The Heart of Education" is edited by Graham Anderson, one of the 33 teachers turned headmasters under Rod's stewardship. It is a valuable lesson delivered by one of this country’s greatest teachers and a certain reminder of true leadership.

Gayelene Carbis documents family obsessions, the enduring wounds of childhood, the familial shadows that pursue and possess us, and the subtle twists and shifts in human interaction that bedevil and fracture relationships. The result is an extended meditation upon loss and longing, and human fragility, tempered by moments of humour and beauty, and lines which leap out with radiant imagery and insight. - Arnold Zable Nietzsche asserted that it is much easier to write nobly than it is to write lightly and Gayelene Carbis deploys this gift of quicksilver lightness like no other I can think of in contemporary Australian theatre or poetry. - Marion May Campbell What I admire especially about these poems is their emotional honesty, their clear-headedness, their vulnerability and their range: how they marry the murderous and the marvelous, to use Seamus Heaney’s words. These poems understand that each of us is flawed, and they forgive us. They have that courage, and they induce it. - Mark Tredinnick

AVAILABLE NOW Author Information Gayelene Carbis is an award-winning writer of poetry, prose and plays, whose work has been widely performed and published in Australia and overseas. Gayelene was recently shortlisted for the Montreal International Poetry Prize, Fish Poetry Prize (Ireland); work & tumble Chapbook Prize; Adrien Abbott, Martha Richardson and Melbourne Poets’ Union International Poetry Prizes. In 2012, Gayelene was awarded a Poetry Scholarship and CAL Travel Grant to the Banff Arts Centre in Canada. Her most recent one-woman show won Best Premiere Production at the Sarasota Festival (U.S.) this year and will be performed in Melbourne.

Our societies are growing more unequal, more hierarchical, meaner and less human every year. Voters appalled by the direction of current politics respond to leaders that articulate a cohesive and genuine progressivism. This book provides the framework for politicians and activists to deliver that vision, organised around the themes of cooperative solutions to social problem-solving and a social contract centred on rights and the equal dignity of all people. Drawing on contemporary Australian examples, Politics for the New Dark Age: Staying positive amidst disorder shows how the partisan divide recurs in policy debates from civil rights, to inequality, to economic growth, to the environment and foreign policy. It argues that we should recommit to fighting for our democracy in order to manage these social differences and channel them into opportunities for social progress. As a former Australian diplomat with ten years’ experience writing political analysis for government, Anthony Skews is well placed to provide a comprehensive introduction to left-wing thought for the contemporary ‘post-fact’, politically polarised era. Above all, this book argues for an alternative future. Available Now

We use them every day, some of us more than others. They make our conversations colourful and interesting, loud and bright, rich and rare... and sometimes seemingly foreign or incomprehensible to visitors to our shores. They derive from a variety of cultural, historical and ethnic sources, and have adapted and evolved over time into a collection of truly original 'Australian-isms'. They underline and emphasise the linguistic imprint of who we are as Australians. Some call them 'Strine'. Others, simply slang or idiom. We like to think of them as Australian 'Slang-uage' - Sayings, Slang and Idiom, the Aussie way. Here are some Aussie sayings to ponder: 'Hello, here's trouble', 'How are you me old china?', "Howzit garn?' 'Saw your light on, thought I'd drop in', 'We have to stop meeting like this'.

Author Information Paul Bugeja is an Australian-based writer, editor, screenwriter and actor. Having studied at the University of Melbourne, the Victorian College of the Arts and RMIT, his interests are broad, ranging from sport to film to politics. He is a member of Actors Equity, the Australian Writers Guild and the NSW Society of Editors. He has had several books published, with several more in the pipeline, is working on a feature film and several short films. Paul made the choice to take the 'road less travelled' and that has made the difference...

To Be Grateful For "What Is" Has Been My Personal Path To Freedom. When we stop to allow and fully accept the reality of this current moment - NOW - a calmness is revealed and available to us. With this diary, we are hoping for you also, to find the inspiration to stop, smell the roses, and take stock of what is truly important, in a world that appears to be turning in an ever increasing pace. Take a moment each day to breathe and ask yourself the following questions... What is it that you are currently grateful for? What is good? What is working and what is valuable? In your daily planner you will notice a space at the beginning of each day to journal these thoughts. You will be amazed at how this very simple practice and commitment will expand for you what is good and what is true! There is an old saying "where your attention goes, Energy flows". It takes just 5 minutes and the positive effects will last a lifetime...Your lifetime. We wish you an abundant and evolutionary year and would love to hear about your experiences and miracles you will inevitably encounter.

As Melbourne's gangland war gathered momentum during the late 1990s, another battle was being fought within the police force by one brave cop. Young detective sergeant Simon Illingworth had joined the force to serve the public and make a difference. His world was forever shattered when he confronted police corruption head-on. Watching Melbourne's toughest killers working alongside his own colleagues made him sick to the guts. Simon soon discovered the price for standing up against them was death threats and isolation. A spate of events finally sent him to the point of no return. He was brutally bashed - not by crooks but other policemen from an entrenched corrupt brotherhood. A witness preparing to give court evidence against police was then found dead in an execution-style murder. And an underworld crim who was given Simon Illingworth's address was caught in possession of eight guns, night vision goggles and a silencer. Fearing for his life, in May 2004 this brave copper went public about the crisis facing the police force, in an episode of ABC Television's Australian Story that stopped the nation. Filthy Rat is a brutally honest and action-packed account of the fight against Melbourne's gangland crooks and the

The Miles Franklin Literary Award is Australia’s most prestigious literature prize. Established through the will of My Brilliant Career author, Miles Franklin, the prize is awarded each year to a novel which is of the highest literary merit and presents Australian life in any of its phases. First presented in 1957, the Award helps to support authors and to foster uniquely Australian literature. Miles Franklin believed that “Without an indigenous literature, people can remain alien in their own soil." She also had first-hand experience of struggling to make a living as a writer and was the beneficiary of two literary prizes herself.

Big is a hefty cross-dresser and Little is little. Both are long used to the routines of boarding house life in the inner suburbs of Melbourne, but Little, with the prospect of an inheritance, is worrying Big by indulging in dreams of home ownership. Little's cousin, Angus, is a solitary man who designs lake-scapes for city councils, and fireproof houses for the bushfire zone. A handy man, he meets Jasmin - an academic who races in her ideas as much as in her runners. Her head is set on publishing semiotics books on semiotics, her heart is turned towards her stalled personal life. All four are waiting, for something, if not someone.

Author Information Philip Salom comes from Western Australia and lives in Melbourne. He is twice winner of the Commonwealth Prize for Poetry. His poetry and fiction have won and been nominated for many awards including WA and Victorian Premier’s Awards. Waiting is his third novel.

An Australian cookbook has been announced as the “Best in the World” in the “Health and Nutrition” category in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, awarded on May 28. Food As Medicine: Cooking for Your Best Health by Sue Radd was released by Signs Publishing in October. It features 150 plant-based recipes, as well as extensive explanation of the scientific research that supports the pattern of eating demonstrated in the recipes. The award was presented by Edouard Cointreau, chairman of the awards committee. The Cointreau family operate Le Cordon Bleu cooking schools around the world, along with a number of other significant food and food-related businesses. “There is no higher award in the cookbook world,” said Andrew Irvine, general manager of Signs Publishing who accepted the award at the ceremony in Yantai, China. Food As Medicine explores how our dietary decisions can affect our physical and mental health. It was awarded best “Health and Nutrition” book in Australia late last year, then shortlisted as one of eight in the “Health and Nutrition” category from around the world. “Standards are very high and there is significant competition in each category,” Mr Irvine said. “I was amazed by the support and encouragement received from other chefs and industry professionals I have met during the awards process.” The annual awards have been described as the “Oscars” of cookbooks and attract entries from more than 200 nations. According to Signs book editor Nathan Brown, the award represents a team of people working together to produce a book that is both credible and attractive. “Author and cook Sue Radd is an experienced dietitian and is involved in world-leading nutrition research at the University of Sydney,” he says. “Then there was the team we worked with to create the food photography and design of the book, including a young Melbourne chef, as well as our people at Signs who worked to produce a book we can be proud of—and has now been recognised as such.” Entering Food As Medicine in the Gourmand Awards followed featuring the cookbook at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October, which also attracted interest in the cookbook from publishers in a number of languages around the world. “As a publisher, we have been publishing books on health, nutrition and positive lifestyle, based in Warburton for more than 100 years, so the success of this project follows in the best of this tradition,” reflects Mr Brown. —Signs Publishing

This Jason Richards tribute book is an illustrated history of the popular racing driver's career and life and the battle with cancer that he lost. Richards started his racing career in karts in New Zealand before progressing into Formula Ford in both his homeland and Great Britain before returning home to dominate the local touring car racing. He won three national titles before making his debut in the V8 Supercar Championship and becoming a three-time runner-up in the Bathurst 1000. His story though is much more than that, it is a story of a man whose natural charm won an army of fans, including some of his fellow competitors like John Bowe and Greg Murphy who have written forwards for the book. "I have so many memories of Jason that I have never really committed to print, this is my chance to tell a little bit of a story and show people a little bit more about Jason," author Andrew Clarke said recently. "We had discussed a book of much greater written substance to this, but the battle he was fighting took too much energy to talk about himself." "What he wanted to do was tell the story of his life so that Sienna and Olivia could understand their dad a little more as they grow up. We missed being able to tell that story, but now at least we can let them understand him through the eyes of those around him, while also giving back a little more to the girls that meant the world to him. "The motorsport photographers of Australia have to be thanked in advance for donating their pictures for this, and I think their willingness to do something like this shows you a little more about the measure of the man." When the Pacific war began it was a case of "when not if" Darwin would be attacked. But nobody could have predicted the extraordinary scale and ferocity of the 19 February 1942 raid. A massive strike force, blooded at Pearl Harbor just weeks before, hit Darwin in the biggest Japanese air attack ever in the South Pacific. Since then, generations of Australians have been drawn to the stories and folklore of the Darwin action. But facts have blurred and mythology has thrived. What of the warning that never happened? What of the ghost ship actually sunk in the Atlantic a year earlier? Did a fighter pilot contrive a false combat record? Did the authorities cover up the raid? Why do Australians know so little about it? This is the book that tests these many Darwin myths and reveals new information: another ship sunk; the actual intent and nature of the attack; the precise extent of the Japanese losses. The Darwin raid is usually portrayed as a wholesale disaster for the Allies, and a day full of military ineptitude. Carrier Attack shows the defenders were alert and fought with purpose. Arguably it was the Japanese that wasted much of their attacking strength, and in this way the Darwin defenders avoided a much larger catastrophe. Carrier Attack provides a timely and fresh analysis of the raid. Most importantly, it draws on specially translated Japanese sources.

Author Information Dr Tom Lewis OAM is the award-winning author of 11 books. A long time resident of Darwin, he is the current Director of the Darwin Military Museum. In 2012 he was a major participant in the 70th anniversary of the Darwin raid, which included a multi-million dollar re-development of the Museum. Tom is a former naval of cer whose service included a combat deployment to Baghdad. Peter Ingman is the grandson of an original Gallipoli Anzac who lived in 1930s Darwin. He has been a regular visitor to the Northern Territory since the 1980s when his father worked there as a surgeon. With a background as a business executive, he has a long interest in Australian military history. Peter currently manages an Adelaide-based publishing company.

A kind of historical kaleidoscope covering misogyny and all sorts of misconduct and naughtiness in a number of noble circles. The book contains a number of illustrative instances selected from royal families from around the world, all viewed from the mischievous perspective of an ordinary bloke. The tales are portrayed in a satirical manner and the depiction of the particular cases is focused on the more "spicy" aspects of the happenings rather than on the historical importance of the events.

Another Brick in the Wall tells the humorous story of Dan Martin, a rugby player who defected from the Eastern Bloc and settled in Australia in the 1980's. Coming from a non‐English speaking background and not academically inclined, Dan's communication skills are very shaky and much of the humour of the novel comes from his misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the English language. Dan, a typical rugby player who enjoys food, booze and sexy women, falls for Sonia ‐ a stunningly attractive brunette. At the same time, trying to improve his language skills, he starts to listen to Sarah Wilkinson's talk back radio program and becomes infatuated with her, even though he has no idea what she looks like. Soon he is caught between two women: the gorgeous looking Sonia and the smart, witty Sarah whom he has never seen. Dan knows that sooner or later, he must choose between the two and his decision leads to a thrilling ending.

A Securitate general torn between the gruesome demands of his job as a top secret police commander and his conscience. A young man who learns for the first time what true love is, to only discover it was just an illusion. A strikingly beautiful girl unable to find her inner‐self allowing destiny to run its course and sadly, becoming a victim of the corrupt communist system. All set against the historical background of the repressive regime in communist Romania in the 1970s, during the “golden era” of the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. A White Dress is a story addressed and connected to the heart and to the soul. The heroes, in a continuous, illusory search for eternal love, for beauty and purity, in the end realise that a perfect world does not exist. They are sadly defeated by their own destiny, in which the intrinsic evil of the communist system plays a major role.

Mick is a street fighter, a guy who fears nothing and no one and has a reputation ‐ he doesn't hesitate to throw a punch to get his way. But when he meets Tina, a tall, pretty brunette who drives him insane, his life changes forever. Or does it? Radu, on the other hand, is a misunderstood poet and dreamer whose lonely life takes an intriguing twist when he befriends Ingrid. He thinks he is falling for Ingrid until he meets her best friend ‐ the beautiful, blue‐eyed Laura. Love quickly turns to hatred and good to evil. Set in Romania during the "golden era" of Nicolae Ceausescu's repressive dictatorship, When Pigeons Fly To Nowhere is the story of the love affairs of two blood brothers: Mick and Radu. This fast paced, gritty romance explores life and love behind the Iron Curtain.

Engilina, Engibear and Bearbot are back to build transport for the future - a new maglev train that will run from Munnagong to Billaburra as fast as a plane. During the project, they discover an old steam engine which leads them on an interesting journey and creates an unexpected link to the past. Travel with them on this tale of trains, teamwork, technology and time …

Author Information Andrew is an engineer from Brisbane. Engibears have been part of Andrew’s family for many years. They were created while Andrew played and shared stories with his children. Andrew thinks he is very lucky that Ben was able to bring the Engibears to life through his illustrations. Andrew is passionate about the role that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (the STEM subjects) have to play in our sustainable future, and equally passionate about the importance of STEM education. Andrew and the Engibears, the friendly faces of engineering, regularly visit schools to talk to students about engineering and work on engineering activities. In his spare time Andrew enjoys spending time with his family, playing bass guitar, walking and trying to play golf. Illustrator Information Benjamin Johnston works as a mild-mannered architect by daytime and a masked illustrator by night … and he is looking forward to the day he might actually have enough time for everything he wants to get done. Drawing and illustrating for children has always been his passion. He is the illustrator and co-creator of the successful STEM-inspired Engibears series. Benjamin’s illustration abilities cover a wide range of styles and media. While, as an architect, technical drawing or digital illustration comes naturally, study at Julian Ashton Art School also encouraged a more free-flowing expression. The two sides are constantly at war! Benjamin describes himself as a brief-driven illustrator without a set style or direction. He enjoys collaboration with authors and editors – open to the specific needs of each project, and he is keen to ensure that all illustrations work as hard as possible to get the intended message across. Benjamin lives and works in Sydney and probably always will.

A tale of cruelty, loyalty and love. Fox and Bear were true friends. They were close-as-can-be friends, through and through friends… except for one thing. Fox was quick and slick and sly, and Bear was dumber than a pile of rocks. But that’s how it was. And it didn’t matter. Then Fox stretched the string of friendship until it snapped and they weren’t friends any more. The Sorry Tale of Fox and Bear is the story of two friends who fall out with one another, and about what happens next. It is outrageous, passionate and poignant, and the bittersweet ending is as ambiguous as any friendship in real life. A mash-up of several Norwegian folk tales, The Sorry Tale of Fox and Bear is told with wit and verve by Margrete Lamond, and the darkly brooding charcoal illustrations are by acclaimed artist Heather Vallance.

Author Information Margrete Lamond is a consummate storyteller with a deep understanding of folk tales and of how to retell traditional and classic narratives with a fresh, contemporary twist. Her books include Tatterhood and Other Feisty Folktales, illustrated by Peter Sheehan; The Nutcracker, illustrated by Ritva Voutila; Frankenstein, illustrated by Drahos Zac; and the Once Upon A Timeless Tale series, a collection of retold folk and fairy tales, illustrated by a variety of leading artists. Margrete is also the publisher of the award-winning picture-book imprint Little Hare Books, a passionate advocate for powerful quality artwork in books for younger readers, a researcher in the overlap between neuroscience and aesthetic reception, and a curator who specialises in showcasing the best of international illustrative art.

Illustrator Information Heather Vallance’s work is informed by animal and human figures in their many forms, and their relationships to their environments. She says, ‘I believe the environments we inhabit physically, socially and emotionally manifest in who we are.’ The Sorry Tale of Fox and Bear is Heather’s first venture into narrative illustration. Heather’s work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the prestigious Kedumba Drawing Award, and hangs in both private and public collections. She has taught art in remote communities, and in regional schools and galleries, and currently teaches drawing, painting and printmaking at tertiary level. Flavio the Flamingo had lost his colour pink. ‘Whatever will I do?’ he started to think. Flavio the Flamingo is having an identity crisis. He embarks on a quest, searching high, low – and everywhere in between – longing to find his colour.

Author Information After penning numerous poems, often humorous, over the years, Cassidy Jackson-Carroll fulfilled a burning passion by writing her first children’s book, Flavio the Flamingo. Often on the search for adventure, Cassidy has travelled extensively and found herself in places as remote as Kokoda, Kilimanjaro and Kathmandu. Her wanderlust often allows her to encounter varying animals, part of her inspiration for creating the character of Flavio. When not globe-trotting around the world, Cassidy spends her time inspiring the minds of the younger generation (she is known as Miss J-C in the classroom), and patrolling the beaches of Rainbow Bay, Queensland, where she is a Surf Life Saver. Cassidy is currently trying to perfect her ‘cross step’ skill on a longboard, and hopes to kick a winning goal in her first season of AFL. Illustrator Information Graeme is a visual artist and illustrator. He was born in Narrabri, North-West NSW, Australia. He has loved drawing since childhood. He works from home and has a busy practice, completing commissions for portraiture and illustrations for children's books. Graeme's subjects and styles are broad, from fierce dragons to happy humans, one-eyed chooks to piano-crunching pachyderms, rendered in graphite, ink, charcoal, acrylic or pixels. He has twice been a finalist for portraiture in the Mortimer Prize for Realism (2011-2012) and received the Grand Champion award for his work 'Egret on Tap' in the Gunnedah Art Exhibition 2013. From 2013 he began illustrating children's books and has produced numerous pictures for authors, filling twelve books by early 2017. Graeme completes portraits in between illustrations. He is currently working on the sketches for an exhibition of his fantasy works, including dragons, phoenixes, demons and other beasties. The Man in the Panama Hat would love nothing more than staying indoors. Every time he leaves the house, something goes wrong. Can Mr Black Cat convince his friend to venture outside and have some fun? A windy, windy day awaits!

Author Information Joachim Gevert was born in Cooma, NSW. He moved to Sydney at the age of four and has lived there ever since. He has a background in engineering, and he considers his fourteen-year-old Fox Terrier, Hershey, to be one of his best friends. He’s incredibly excited for The Man in the Panama Hat to enter the world. He has many more adventures (and tribulations) planned for the Man in the Panama Hat that he would love to share. Illustrator Information Growing up, Ffranses was never allowed to go out without bringing back a story from the Welsh village. This led to one’s eyes and ears being open all the time, and major embellishments added to complete the story for retelling around the kitchen fire. In her illustrations, Ffranses shows the ordinary becoming extraordinary by embracing our adventurous, imaginative side, and leaving the mundane and prosaic aspects of life to experience different sorts of reality. Ffranses is fascinated by the little dramas that are played out quietly alongside the main action. The inspiration for this is Joseph Wright, who does this so beautifully in Frank Muir’s What-A-Mess. Studying drama and voice production, Ffranses gained work upon arrival in Australia as a story-teller for the South Australian Education Department and School of the Air. Her stories have been screened and published in Australia and America. She gained her visual arts degree, and Diploma in Graphic Design and Illustration from Enmore Design Centre, so she can further her passion for creating picture books that are lifelong companions and pathways to extraordinary ways of being, Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

Oscar makes his home proudly on a beautiful beach, but what happens when a throng of beachgoers turn up and make a mess? Oscar gets to work, claws poised and ready to defend his pristine home! The results are some good oldfashioned nipping fun.

Author Information Born in Sydney, Charlie Olsson worked as a boy on his family’s sheep farm and quickly found a love of this environment and the delicacy of nature. This instilled a lifelong interest in farming and the manufacturing of products in animal health and welfare. Having developed a love of science and research, he also later graduated in economics and accounting, opening up further businesses in agriculture. More recently, Charlie has been involved in agricultural politics regarding national animal welfare issues, and has been elected to the Australian Wool Board, while also belonging to the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In recent years, he began writing children’s books — originally basic stories for his children, who seemed to have insatiable appetites for anything with animals, sh or insects. He now plans to write as much as he can in the future, and is now working on his rst teenage novel. Illustrator Information Lauren Merrick has always had a love of illustration and picture books. Growing up, most of her time was spent drawing and painting. This has continued into her adult life and she now works full-time as an illustrator. Lauren has completed a Design Certificate IV and an Advanced Diploma of Design and Illustration at Enmore Design Centre. She has developed her own whimsical illustration style, developing her skills with watercolour and paper cut.
