Memoirs
Susan Cutsforth and her husband, Stuart, are ‘ordinary’ people living an extraordinary life. They both work full‐time: one is a teacher librarian of thirty years, and the other, a middle‐level clerk in the public service. But, as Susan recounts, they own a holiday house, Pied de la Croix, in Cuzance, a small village in south‐western France — t h e other side of the world. And not only that, this petite maison required significant renovating, which they accomplished almost singlehandedly during their working holidays. Our House is Not in Paris is a story of pushing boundaries, aiming high and, most of all, taking risks. With humour, poetry and insight, Susan’s story shows that you can do more than simply dream… Our House Is Not In Paris has been a sensation on Amazon as an ebook and is now being published in print. Here is a sample of reviews being posted by readers: ‘On more than one occasion I had to visit my local deli in Sydney and buy French cheese and bread to join the author on the steps of her rural French house.’ ‘What a catchy title. What a great little holiday read. I loved this book. I could think of nothing better than to buy a little house in France ...with this book I was able to partake in the journey with Susan Cutsforth. I only wish my Kindle could show photos!’ ‘Wonderful and touching! Thank you for your story! It was both wonderful and touching. I have not renovated in France but have the same hard work and endurance for projects in my bones. Husband and I spent time in France this year. I learned a touch of French from the library Michael Thomas tapes. I am still infatuated with France and still watch the movies and read the books. I can't get enough. I really enjoyed your adventures. So far away, but nonetheless, so determined to successfully carve out a life there. I will continue to think of both of you and will secretly wonder if every weather vane I see is yours! Bonjour!’ ‘Fantastic Fantastic... This book had my attention from the start until the end, it moved at a frenetic pace. The author has a magical ability to paint a clear picture of everything French. On more than one occasion I had to visit my local deli in Sydney and buy French cheese and bread to join the author on the steps of her rural French house! (True) If you are considering visiting France it is an ideal book to give you an insight into what to expect and what is expected of you. Well at least outside of Paris! For anyone renovating, anywhere, it is a must read. The passion is obvious not only in the renovating but also the writing.’ Distributed by

Memoirs
Travels with My Hat is the story of how an Australian nurse switched careers to become an award‐winning international travel writer and photographer. It is a colourful record of her experiences defined by travel and frequently against all odds.‘We don’t know who you are,’she was told on arrival in London in 1974. ‘To get a name here, you need to write a book.’ Which is precisely what she did, choosing as subject the developing Arab oil states of the eastern Gulf. Publication of The Gulf States & Oman in 1977 brought commissions on the Middle East. Books followed on Jordan and Pakistan. In 1979 she was accredited to the Buckingham Palace press corps to cover Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s historic tour of Arabia. In 1981, she travelled to Iraq, invited to Baghdad by the Ba’athist regime of Saddam Hussein. Her adventures in Iraq, Ethiopia, Egypt, Yemen, Pakistan, Morocco and other exotic places, are rounded off with letters to her mother who had never left Australia. From the Author My journeys began in the Pacific islands in the 1960s, when travel was far less homogenised than it is today – a time when you could simply roam, without having to state a return date on your airline ticket. And while I have flown across the globe on more occasions than I can recall, my happiest times were of travelling slowly around the world on the old Messageries Maritimes packet-steamers spending days in exotic ports like Tahiti, Aden and Djibouti, or Mombasa, Dakar and Zanzibar, frequently disembarking to explore terra-firma with a notebook and camera – no laptops in those days. In the 1990s, I began specialising in world religions focusing largely on people practising their chosen belief and observing the associated rites of passage. Together with my travel images, they have been used in a wide variety of books produced by leading academic publishers. When Bill Gates launched Corbis, a leading photographic agency, my image of a ‘Blue Man’ on a dune in the Sahara was chosen from a million others to promote the Corbis website. My unique adventures include working as a freelance photojournalist in countries such as Egypt, Yemen, Pakistan, Iraq and Ethiopia, at a time when there were no PR agencies, or tourist offices and in some places, no hotels. In one Arab Gulf state, I slept in the desert with a pistol under my pillow. MyBlog (http://travelswithmyhat.com/blog/) is essentially my take on current affairs, notably in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. I also comment on human rights and the environment, especially sharks and other marine life. Aside from travel, my interests include a swathe of things from fishing and diving, to eastern cuisines, the media, real estate and gardening – I have a huge garden filled with camellias, rhododendrons, jasmine and weeds. Enjoy travel via Travels with My Hat without getting your feet wet … Bon Voyage! Distributed by

Biography: Travel
Patrick Cullinan is the first member of the Australian Defence Force to climb Mount Everest. He achieved this as part of the 1988 Australian Bicentennial Everest Expedition. Patrick's journey to the summit of Everest start with his days as a cadet at Duntroon and continued through his time as the commander of Climbing Troop at the Special Air Service Regiment. He take us up Mount Gauri Shankar in Nepal (his apprenticeship), Broad Peak in Pakistan (the rehearsal) and then finally to Everest with the Bicentennial Expedition. The Expedition team decided to forgo the usual practice of using climbing sherpas. This prompted the Sherpa Sungdare, who at the time had climbed Everest five times, to say to one of the Australian expedition members, ‘You guys are White Sherpas.’ 'White Sherpas' - Recordings from Mount Everest Paul Bayne and Pat Cullinan had been waiting at Camp 4 on the South Col of Mount Everest for the weather to break so they could make their attempt to reach the summit. On 24 May, after 6 days in the death zone, they were instructed to descend but could make their attempt that night if weather permitted. Paul Bayne records his thoughts. Biography & True Stories
This book is dedicated to the memory of police officers across Australia who have died in the line of duty. Between the years 1803 and 2012, there have been seven hundred and fifty four duty related deaths in Australia. Some officers were the victims of cold‐blooded murders, some died by accident and others for want of water whilst stranded in the outback. Many were heroes who had memorials built to honour their deeds, while others were awarded medals posthumously. But each and every one of these men and women had loved ones, wives, husbands, parents, siblings and children to mourn their non‐return. The date of September 29th is set aside in Australia each year as Police Rememberrance Day, a day to honour those police officers whose lives have been forfeited in the line of duty, and on this date special services are held and wreathes laid at specially contructed police memorials in each state and territory of Australia to honour those fallen officers. While the above mentioned ceremonies were being conducted around Australia on Seotember 29, 2006, police and government officials from all states and territories assembled in Canberra for the inaugural service and unveiling of a National Police Memorial at Kings Park in Canberra. This memorial contains a plaque bearing the name and the date of death of each male and female officer who had lost their life in the line of duty since 1803. Here for the first time, is a book, which like the above mentioned memorial is dedicated to the brave police officers throughout Australia whose lives have been lost in the line of duty. While the details describing each death are, by necessity, very brief it gives an idea of the dangers encountered by police officers in Australia from the very earliest times. It also illustrates the bravery of many of the other officers like those who attempt to swim fast flowing rivers to save the lives of others, or one who lost his life in directing civilians away from a collapsing warehouse, and others who though unarmed tried to arrest armed offenders. Hopefully this book will add insight into the working lives of a police officer and will show the daily risks some are subjected to on an almost daily basis, all with a view to protecting the community. ‘LEST WE FORGET’ -Available Now

This is a book that is not only easy to read and understand, but is also jam packed with fabulous recipes containing all the ingredients and nutrients to combat these problems. A wonderful book and a wonderful read…” Professor Ian Brighthope, M.D. Melbourne, Australia About the Author Alison attributes much of her success as a chef to the vigorous training she received at the world‐famous culinary school, Westminster Hotel School in London, which boasts other celebrity ex‐students such as Jamie Oliver. She landed her first Head Chef position at the age of 21 in London at JP Morgan Investments. Her culinary career exploded from there with offers from all over the world including the playgrounds of the rich and famous in the USA, France and Australia. This has resulted in her cooking for film and pop stars, sporting greats, Heads of State, and royalty including Queen Elizabeth. She came to Australia in 1988, and was appointed as Chef for the VIP Lounge of the Australian Pavilion at World Expo 88, where she incidentally met and fell in love with her husband, Steve. Alison and Steve ran a successful gourmet catering business in Brisbane for five years. She was then drawn into the world of teaching the budding chefs of the future. In 2004, Alison was the first ever chef to win a prestigious Churchill Fellowship and, in 2006, Alison claimed a further award: Outstanding Educator for Culinary Arts. In 2008, she released her first cookbook, Fun, Fast and Fabulous Food —a roaring success. In 2010 she released her second cookbook, Leftovers Magic, which was also a tremendous success and reached the ‘best sellers’ list at Borders just before Christmas that year. She now runs her own School of Culinary Excellence and continues to enjoy her life teaching others. In this, her third book, Alison takes you on the powerful journey of her beloved sister Laura’s fight to beat secondary breast cancer. She shares with you her vast knowledge of food and nutrition and information on healthy diets she believes can literally reverse illness. Through Laura’s story Alison shows you how, from a complete change of diet, ‘eating for your life’ has seen Laura recover and become healthy. Alison is devoted to her family and you will note that this book has been written in honour of them. Distributed by

Biography: general
For Barbara Baikie and Dolores Cummins, climbing the world’s highest free standing mountain, Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro was more than a test of physical endurance: it challenged the framework of ideals and expectations of the society in which they work and live. One made it to the very peak of Kilimanjaro’s dizzy dangerous heights. One did not. Yet both learnt valuable lessons during the nine‐day trek about what really matters in life. Despite the varying outcomes, both achieved. In Altitude: Two women’s journey on Mount Kilimanjaro, executive educators Barbara and Dolores provide raw insight into their experience and mindset as they pushed their bodies and minds to the limit. They also draw parallels from their journey to challenges faced every day. Part travelogue, part personal development workbook, readers don’t have to scale giddy heights to question or abandon societal expectations in order to bare their authentic selves and create a life of choice. Life is precious, life is transient, and life often thrusts at us the unexpected. We were reminded that we have to let go of who we are supposed to be and just be who we really are. Barbara Baikie and Dolores Cummins are management consultants, group facilitators and executive and leadership coaches based in Australia. They are also friends for a lifetime.
It’s not the mountain that we conquer, but ourselves. Sir Edmund Hillary

Beaut Kids just don’t happen! It takes some thinking, planning and practice. With this in mind we’ve created a cookbook‐styled parenting book packed with sensible, straight forward ideas for parents to place into action. We want to ignite your thinking about how you choose to parent! Each chapter offers a typical tricky scenario that parents often face with their children and young teens ‐ accompanied with the ingredients that usually fire things up. Then, we offer a ‘Recipe rescue’ as an optimistic problem solver; a practical way to respond to kids when they serve up those awkward and tricky behaviours. Raising Beaut Kids has as much to do with our relationship with them as it has to do with shaping their behaviour ‐ the two go firmly hand in hand. We’ve decided that parents deserve honesty so there’s no tiptoeing around the issues in this book because our children are too precious to compromise!
About the Authors Bill Hansberry and Mark Le Messurier are both published authors who work in Adelaide in South Australia, in private practice as teachers, counsellors and mentors to young people. This work naturally extends to providing coaching and an understanding ear and to parents. Raising Beaut Kids contains the essence of what Mark and Bill’s clients, as well as their research, shows to be the big challenges of raising kids and young teens today. This true story is a frank and revealing account of exceptionally demanding as well as wonderfully rewarding experiences establishing an Aboriginal Art and Craft centre on Elcho Island—situated in the Arafura Sea, off Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. Set to a backdrop of corruption, relationships and harassment but most significantly the ultimate joy of success and the extraordinary experience of working with the Aboriginal artists. Taken from her hand‐written journal, the narrative portrays many cross cultural challenges as well as the personal struggles of a single white woman trying to survive in a remote Aboriginal community. About the Author From a background predominantly in the visual arts, which included establishing an Aboriginal art and craft centre on Elcho Island in Arnhem Land, Irena's experience of writing a substantial piece commenced with her thesis for her Master’s Degree (Art Administration UNSW). For seven years she also wrote a weekly Art Review column for a regional newspaper, The Northern Rivers Echo, Lismore — while she was the Director of the Lismore Regional Gallery, and a variety of short essays for art catalogues and publications as well as producing a quarterly newsletter and so forth. Following a high profile murder trial in 2000, where Irena was acquitted and completely exonerated, she wrote her biography with Mark Amdur, IRENA, The Irena Hatfield Story, which was published by Harper Collins in 2001. As a personal legacy for her family, in 2012, Irena wrote Memories of my Childhood, a candid journey through the innocence of her childhood whilst growing up in Mount Druitt during the 1950s. Situated 43 kilometres west of Sydney, at this time, Mount Druitt was a sleepy, working‐class, rural hamlet. Born, Irena Dobrijevich, daughter of WWII refugee migrants, she shares the delights and adventures of her day to day life as well as intimate experiences of time spent at Dalwood Home, a Sydney government run orphanage, and Haddon Hall, a small Presbyterian children's home in the Blue Mountains.

Biography & True Stories
“Listen carefully and I’ll tell you where the gold is…” So begins Digger, Max Anderson’s classic tale of adventure and adversity as he tries to stake a claim among the hard‐bitten gold‐ seekers of the West Australian deserts. First published by Picador UK in 2004, Digger took readers into a world like no other –a Goldfields ghost town of 13 people, home to characters like snarling ex‐truckie Ron, veteran treasure hunter Lazy Les and the elusive publican of the Grand Hotel, Kevin Pusey, who surveys all through a haze of cigarillo smoke. Digging between the abandoned shafts, Anderson learns the business of 'chasing the weight', unearthing superstitions and secrets, as well as stories of the original desert diggers who thirsted for gold. But ultimately he sinks deep into a small town's psyche and – r i s k i n g his relationship and his self‐respect – d o w n to the bedrock of an age‐old obsession. Gold. Reviews for Digger… “Old‐time prospectors know how to deal with this squeaky clean novice. But Anderson wins them over, as he wins over his readers, with his thoroughness, lack of pretension and an irrepressible enthusiasm” Sunday Times, UK “As entertaining a book as I’ve read this year. Anderson is a good listener, a keen observer, an avid researcher and a fine writer... He writes best of the complex webs of rules and etiquettes between diggers and the compulsion that drives them… The resulting account is informative, amusing and sometimes moving. You can hardly ask for more than that.” Sydney Morning Herald “A classic adventure travel story with a final, almost incredible twist… Anderson is an excellent writer” South China Morning Post “An outstanding first –a compelling, effortless read, where nothing grates. The text builds on total immersion in a culture, and comprehensive research into its evolution… As interestingly informative as it is entertaining.” Wanderlust, UK “Absorbing history of an obsession.” Publishing News, UK “Rich with historical detail.” Good Taste Magazine, Australia “As much an affectionate tribute to the people Anderson met in Kookynie as it is a record of his blundering about the bush… [Anderson] has produced a warmly glowing little nugget in this good‐humoured and finely observed book.” Literary Review, UK “A boy’s own adventure story played out on the dusty, pitted remnants of the West Australian goldfields… [Anderson] does a good line in self‐ deprecation, is cheerfully wry and has diligently researched Australian gold‐rush history.” Times Literary Supplement, UK “Entertaining, informative and useful.” The Bulletin “The real mother lode he found was in chronicling the colourful characters of Kookynie – all 13 of them… A rollicking diary.” Breakfast with Peter Thompson, ABC Radio National

The media claim he is ‘Australia’s Greatest Conman.’ Read this story and decide for yourself. Over five years Bon Levi wrote this book in prison, somehow getting it sent out without the screws stopping him. He wrote business letters and did multi‐million dollar deals from his prison cell. Did he smuggle the letters out? No, he posted them through the system! Were they real? You decide. He wrote to presidents and premiers and got answers. He discussed a fifty million dollar deal with his partner on the outside – sunken gold. He talks about the fraud squad and Scott Hart, a double murderer, his 41 pet lions in London and red mercury. This book tells you about the intelligence of this man. Why did the coppers, the Federal Police and international governments let him do this as they were watching him? Is this man the conman that the coppers and governments declare he is, or is he being set up and destroyed? It would be egg on the face of the coppers and governments if he pulled off a huge multi‐million dollar deal while he was in jail, in a week he would be making more money than they make in a lifetime! Read on. You be the judge and jury!

Conman or Genius? You be the judge. Portrayed by the media as a conman ever since he beat up a reporter in the Hilton Hotel in Perth, the stories about this man have grown over the years, with The Advertiser calling him “Australia’s Greatest Conman.” Bon Levi has been inventing since the age of 10 when he came up with the “whipper snipper” lawn trimmer. In 1971 he invented an engine that operated on Freon gas and no petrol! He then went on to invent the Levi Energy Technology Engine which led to him being called a GENIUS by a top electrical engineer who was head of a government department. Since then, many others have called him the same due to his engine which will replace petrol, diesel and gas engines in vehicles. In fact, his patent attorney said, “You are going to become the richest man in the world.” This engine will replace all automotive engines, so that you will never have to buy fuel again, and best of all, there is no pollution. The engine can be used in aircraft, spacecraft, ships, submarines and industrial power stations and will mean less costs for you. As stated by an international businessman, “Bon, you will be remembered in history as one of the greatest inventors of the world.” So read on to discover is he a conman or genius? You be the judge!

Biography & True Stories
This book tells the inspiring stories of 27 young people's experiences with homlessness and their engagement with Melbourne City Mission's Step Ahead service. It is based on original research conducted by the authors. As 'Ayub' explains: 'If you want to destroy somebody's life you don't have to kill them, you can make him homeless so his life would be destroyed automatically. Because homelessness affects everything, every part of your life.'

Memoirs
Noel Braun yearns to walk the Camino, the ancient pilgrimage route that leads across France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela. Since the suicide of Maris, his beloved wife of forty‐two years, he has struggled to find himself. But is it pure madness? He’s an old bloke. At seventy‐seven‐ years, he should be sensible, act his age and relax in a rocking chair. Can his body and spirit withstand the demands? Can he leave family and friends behind? Noel believes this is a journey he MUST undertake. It’s a compulsion, a spiritual quest of self‐discovery, an urgent need to commune with the world around and beyond him. When Noel begins his journey, he discovers it’s not just the rigorous demands of the physical world he must answer. The territory of the heart and soul has its own challenges, which have him searching for spiritual and emotional insights. His travels are interwoven with accounts of the many engaging characters he meets. In time he realises he himself is one of the Camino’s characters. The Day Was Made for Walking merges the spiritual with the physical, the ancient with the contemporary. It is a memoir, but also a glimpse into history and a travel guide. About the Author Noel Braun commenced his working career as a country school teacher, then moved into a corporate career, which took him from Melbourne to Perth and Sydney. He has had a lifelong passion for writing and wrote the first words of his novels nearly forty years ago. After a busy career and raising a family of four, he has found the time in retirement to fulfil his long‐held ambition and see his work in print. Noel has published two novels: Friend and Philosopher and Whistler Street. He has also published a memoir, No Way to Behave at a Funeral, which describes his journey following the death by suicide of his wife Maris. He is working on other manuscripts and on developing a new career in writing. Noel lives on Sydney’s northern beaches. He is a keen walker and enjoys getting out in the national parks surrounding his home.

Memoirs
Set in Dublin during the years of the Second World War and in England during the postwar years of the 1950s and 1960s Against the Wind is a lively and compelling memoir. It is the story of a young man of independent mind and feisty spirit who refuses to accept the constraints and strictures of a closed Irish society. And who through economic necessity, at a very young age, is forced to live and work in ‘pagan’ England the land of ‘the enemy’. There he learns to ‘like the English’ and learns of ‘freedoms that he knew very little about’ in ‘holy Ireland’. A wealth of varying and informative material and the ability to anchor the personal securely within the public domain gives this memoir a universal appeal. The narrative has all the ingredients for a compelling read –vivid and varied characters brought alive on the page, compelling setting and historical relevance and interest. The prologue whets our appetite for what is to come and the mixture of recollection, poetry and historical information drawstrings the narrative together well. Astute observation and character portrayal are the strengths of the work, as is the accessible tone of the narrative voice in which the author employs a light touch that has just the right amount of wit and sobriety. About the Author Born in Ireland, J. A. O’Brien has lived most of his life in Australia. He started his working life as a bricklayer and has worked at that trade in Ireland and Britain and for a short period in Australia. His passion for writing gained him tertiary qualifications in professional writing and freelance journalism. He has had freelance material published in leading newspapers and has for many years been a part‐time contributor and consulting editor to community magazines and newspapers. He has edited manuals on aged care and copywriting and is also a published short story writer. He has lived and worked in several parts of Australia and as an owner builder has designed and built two homes using passive solar techniques. His interests include the environment, walking and politics and he also enjoys reading, theatre, movies and listening to ABC programmes like Radio National. A keen student of Irish history, he was co‐author of an audio tape on the Easter Rising of 1916 some years ago that sold in many English speaking countries. He is now retired and lives in Victoria, Australia, with his wife Janet, where he continues to write at least a few hundred words each day.

CSMC was formed at a time when having a child outside of marriage carried enormous stigma and many women in this position were compelled to relinquish their child for adoption. In 1969 a group of mothers who wanted to forge a different path came together, forming the (then) Council for the Single Mother and her Child. CSMC has since driven many significant changes including: the introduction of income support for single mothers; reform of the legal status of children born outside of marriage; changes to the family law system; and changing stereotypes; all while providing compassionate support to single mothers. This history records and celebreates the remarkable achievements of CSMC and the dynamic women who dared to dream and create a better future for all single mothers and their children.

Crime & mystery
A Rediscovered Queen of Australian Crime Melbourne‐born June Wright made quite a splash with the publication of her debut novel, Murder in the Telephone Exchange, in 1948. It was the best‐ selling mystery in Australia that year, sales outstripping even those of the reigning queen of crime, Agatha Christie. Wright went on to publish five more top‐quality mysteries over the next two decades –including three featuring the irrpressible nun detective, Mother Paul –while at the same time raising six children. When she died last year at the age of 92, June Wright’s books were largely forgotten, despite the praise she received at the time and the championing of her work in such recent surveys of the field as Stephen Knight‘s Continent of Mystery. All that’s about to change; Dark Passage is proud to announce the imminent republication of all June Wright’s novels, beginning in December 2013 with Murder in the Telephone Exchange, followed by a previously unpublished mystery, Duck Season Death, in April 2014. These two books include extended introductions by Derham Groves. The other five novels will follow at intervals over the the next two years. MURDER IN THE TELEPHONE EXCHANGE June Wright’s debut stars feisty young telephonist Maggie Byrnes. When one of her more unpopular colleagues at Melbourne Central is murdered –her head bashed in with a “buttinsky,” a piece of equipment used to listen in on phone calls – Maggie resolves to turn sleuth. A couple of her co‐workers are acting strangely, and Maggie is convinced she has a better chance of figuring out who is responsible for the killing than the stodgy police team assigned to the case, who seem to think she herself might have had something to do with it. But then one of her friends is murdered too, and it looks like Maggie might be next in line. Narrated with verve and wit, this is a mystery in the tradition of Dorothy L. Sayers and Daphne du Maurier, by turns entertaining and suspenseful, and building to a gripping climax. It also offers a marvellous account of life in Melbourne in the late 1940s, as young women like Maggie flocked to the big city, leaving behind small‐town family life for jobs, boarding houses and independence. About the Author June Wright (1919‐2012) was born June Healy in Malvern, Victoria, and educated at Kildara College and Loreto Mandeville Hall. After leaving school she worked as a telephonist at the Central Telephone Exchange in Melbourne. She married Stewart Wright in 1941, and they had six children. Her novels include So Bad a Death, The Devil’s Caress, Reservation for Murder, Faculty of Murder, and Make‐Up for Murder.

As the storm of World War II breaks, Mick O’Regan is a peaceful Sydney working‐class boy. Yet he and the shining youth of his generation are cursed to enter a world of high‐speed life and death. Like first‐time Aussie backpackers they cross the planet to save the British Empire, their job on arrival the most dangerous of the War: flying for Royal Air Force Bomber Command. Based on a true Australian war story only now being brought to life by author Justin Sheedy’s vivid historical fictions, “Ghosts of the Empire” is also a story of young people living life to the full while they can – in a blacked‐out world where dance partners, sex and death flow in equal abundance. Though standing on its own as the white‐knuckle excitement saga that it is, “Ghosts of the Empire” is the much‐anticipated sequel to “Nor the Years Condemn”, Sheedy’s highly acclaimed story of shining young men destined never to grow old. ‘Ghosts’, it is said, are the spirits of those who die violently, tragically, or when ripped from life too young. “Ghosts of the Empire” is their story.
At the beginning of World War II, Britain was in the deepest trouble imaginable. 5 minutes flying time away crouched a monster. Alone against it, Britain called out to her Empire. For pilots. From all corners of that Empire, they volunteered. Only the best & brightest were chosen. Australian Daniel Quinn was one of these young men who came to fly against the monster. They had a 1‐in‐3 chance of survival. “Nor the Years Condemn” is based on the true story of the young Australians who flew Spitfires against the all‐conquering might of Nazi Germany. In their late teens and early‐20s, for the job at hand they had to be the ‘shining ones’, rendering the death of so many of them doubly heart‐rending for the reader. Daniel Quinn, flanked by the often hilarious young men of his elite ilk, leaves his peacetime life behind to fight tyranny in this portrait of doomed, brilliant youth. With in‐the‐cockpit flying sequences that readers have described as ‘cinematic’, “Nor the Years Condemn” is also a story of the mothers cursed to relinquish their wonderful sons to war, of first love, of strategic deception and betrayal, of brotherhood and once‐in‐a‐lifetime friendship on a knife’s edge. It is a story of shining young men destined never to grow old, and of those who do: the survivors ‘condemned by the years’, and to their memory of friends who remain forever young.

In this anthology, our editor, Angela Meyer, pays tribute to the undeniable cultural influence that American TV programs such as Twilight Zone and Outer Limits have had on our lives ‘down under’. ‘These TV dramas,’ Meyer says, ‘ were often metaphors for equality, justice, the nuclear threat and more. Though they were just as often pure, spooky fun.’ Meyer has selected short stories and microfiction which range from the fantastical and macabre to the absurd. In Paddy O’Reilly’s Reality TV, a guest is confronted with her husband’s infidelity in front of a live audience and Ali Alizedah’s Truth and Reconciliation satirizes American celebrity television. Chris Flynn’s Sealer’s Cove has a nudist caught in a time slip. Carmel Bird evokes Edgar Allan Poe when over‐sized hares incite the good folk of rural Victoria to commit criminal acts and in Sticks and Stones, Ryan O’Neill has an academic attacked by a demonic alphabet. Contributors include established and emerging writers such as Marion Halligan, Krissy Kneen as well as new talents. Angela Meyer is a Melbourne‐based writer and reviewer. Her fiction has been published in Seizure, Wet Ink, The Lifted Brow. She has written on books for many publications including The Big Issue, The Australian, and Crikey and she has interviewed authors at festivals across Australia and overseas. A chapbook of her flash fiction will be published by Inkerman & Blunt in 2014. Literaryminded.com.au

This is a wonderful eclectic collection of the work of known and unknown contemporary Chinese poets which marks a sea change in the form. Lyrical, political, and yet down‐to‐earth, this new poetry exhibits a liberating, existential dimension previously constricted by propoganda and self‐censorship. The rise of women poets is a further sign of this change. Take Le Ye's confident and assured words ‐ like her free‐ranging ducks ‐ "believing only in the poetry of life", which lends a profound voice to a profound change. Ouyang Yu's method of "direct translation" serves this new freedom perfectly, rendering immediacy with supreme intimacy in a brief stretching of wings.
Steve Brock has inherited his sister’s ‘Buddhist mousetrap’ which is, in his hands, a poem. It’s primed to gently catch the small though not inconsequential events of the days of his working, writing and family life which rest lightly, then, along his wryly amusing lines. This collection is unpretentiously literary and accessible without banality; what the French call sympathique. Merci beaucoup, monsieur Brock! —Kris Hemensley A born‐in‐the‐70s late comer to the Australian poetic scene, Steve Brock has come striding into his own with this low‐key, lower‐case and low‐life poetry in a voice distinctly Stephenesque. Funny and free, experimental and excremental, postmodern drills into ordinary lives that drip with perspicacious poetry. —Ouyang Yu I first heard Steve Brock quieten an audience at the Cargo Club in Adelaide in the late 90s. People stopped and listened. Fifteen years on people are still listening to his evocative representations of urban life. There is always humour at the seat of Steve’s writing, and it’s invariably ironic, but he’ll wipe the smile off your face too with poems which convey the sadness of day‐to‐day life. The language is clear and concise—these are poems which will communicate not just with regular readers of poetry, but with the subjects of his gaze. —Geoff Goodfellow Double Glaze, by Steve Brock, explores the processes shaping the poetic experience. He explores how

Hope Junction is the essence of Outback Australia, a town rich in spirit but facing economic problems and declining population. The over-the-top characters are immediately recognisable and could be found in any country town as they struggle to implement their grand plans. The book, loaded with humanity, tells of upright citizens brimming with pride, yet tempered by scandal and theft. Isabel Tuck wrote the story as stress relief for her husband at the time of his retirement from academic life. While Hope Junction is a light read, it thoughtfully deals with a major social problem facing country communities.

This book brings together the talents of two of the state's most distinguished artists. Charlotte Balfour's brush and Colin Thiele's pen combine to portray the unique beauty of this, a state of contrast and diversity. South Australia revisited is a personal tribute, in paintings and in prose, from two who know and love the state. Charlotte Balfour's paintings evoke the essence and individuallity of the places they depict, Colin Thiele's affectionate and whimsical text provides an historical context for each one.

My friend always said that there were only three types of days in this world: Big ones, Whoppers and Oh, my Gods. Growing up in Melbourne in the ’60s, if you didn’t like your job in the morning then you could get another one in the afternoon. For Clive and Darren, this was often the case, sometimes not of their own choosing. But there were other ways to earn a quid and this is where they both excelled. I hope anyone who buys this book enjoys reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it.

Australia has been colonized not by England, but by Poland. It was originally a prison colony for the most incorrigible Polish villains such as the notorious Pepek Janosik, a serial highway robber who was, ironically, eventually transported for trying to pass dud banknotes. Crucifixion, short term and terminal, is the preferred form of corporal and capital punishment. Australia's towns and cities mostly have Polish, sometimes Aboriginal names. The First Fleet in 1788 was commanded by Captain Karol Wojtyla from the Baltic port city of Gdansk. A few Anglo‐Celts are around, working mostly in menial jobs. The most serious contribution they have made to the Australian fabric was their introduction of cricket which, as in India, became a national passion. To the national diet, they added fish and chips and a little later, kippers. There were several unsuccessful attempts to introduce meat pies. The Polish king is in Warsaw and functions as Australia’s head of state. A Governor‐General, appointed in Warsaw, is the local representative of the Polish Crown. There are occasional royal visits. This is the alternative historical context in which Pawel Kotarbinski, journalist, republican and putative author of this memoir, plays out his life.

Nowadays, in conventional gardening and farming, weed 'control' means herbicides: chemicals have replaced good management for fertility and for pest, disease and weed control. We hate weeds. 'Weed' is the ultimate insult. But weeds can also be seen as soil repairers, an essential part of any farm or garden management. In this completely revised edition, Jackie French shows that weeds can be controlled using your own home‐grown, natural herbicides in addition to mulching, solarisation or applications of urine, steam or boiling water ‐ and a multitude of others cheap, environmentally safe and gentle techniques.

This collection of striking images from Antarctica and the sub‐Antarctic is the result of six journeys made by Australian photographer David Neilson in his quest to capture the exquisite light of these southernmost lands. Between 2002 and 2008 he made three voyages from Ushuaia in southern Argentina to the Antarctic and the sub‐Antarctic. In 2002 he sailed on the yacht Tooluka to the remote sub‐Antarctic island of South Georgia in the middle of the South Atlantic. This heavily glaciated island with numerous high alpine peaks has a remarkable profusion of wildlife along its coasts. In 2006, and again in 2008, he sailed on the yacht Australis to the Antarctic Peninsula. This best‐known part of Antarctica contains some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere on the planet and provides many opportunities for photographing scenes of exceptional drama and beauty. Deception Island, Cuverville Island, Paradise Harbour, Mount Francis, Port Charcot, Lemaire Channel and Elephant Island are among the places covered. In 1990 David Neilson received a Humanities Program position from the Australian Antarctic Division, and in 2004 the Division awarded him an Antarctic Arts Fellowship. These fellowships enabled him to spend two summers photographing in East Antarctica while based at Australia's Mawson Station. Here he photographed the extensive wildlife around the coast and made three trips to the rarely visited Auster emperor penguin colony. Inland he photographed the Framnes Mountains, the remote Prince Charles Mountains and the Vestfold Hills near Davis Station. In 2009 he journeyed to the Ross Sea Region of Antarctica, south of New Zealand, and photographed the Transantarctic Mountains, the active volcano Mount Erebus and the enigmatic McMurdo Dry Valleys. He also photographed several of the historical sites from the heroic era of polar exploration, including Robert Scott's Terra Nova hut at Cape Evans and the Southern Cross Hut at Cape Adare where the Borchgrevink expedition was the first to spend a winter in Antarctica. This Evocative collection of photographs reveals a part of the grandeur and mystery of this great southern realm. There are 130 colour images and 100 black‐and‐white photos reproduced in duotone. Many of the landscape images were taken with a large format view camera. There is also extensive coverage of the wildlife: emperor, king, Adelie, gentoo, chinstrap, royal and macaroni penguins wandering, royal and grey‐headed albatross and crabeater and fur seals. The text comprises a narrative of six photographic journeys and essays on climate change and protecting the Antarctic environment. Five detailed maps provided a geographic context for the photographs.

The Undertakers' Mother is a biographical novel about two people who were raised on opposite sides of the world and who were married because one of them was in great need. In 1889, newly‐married Thomas and Maria Tobin arrive in Marvellous Melbourne from Ireland. They settle in South Melbourne among many of their own countrymen and faith and start a family. Any aspirations to rise above their lowly station in life are quickly crushed with the onset of Depression in the early 1890s. With the discovery of gold in Western Australia, Thomas uproots his family and heads to the goldfields, but ultimately settles in Fremantle. Melbourne born Alice O'Dowd is growing up in the love and security of her Irish‐born parents and siblings in Toorak. Her family is able to rise above the Depression as her illiterate but capable mother takes the opportunity to purchase their first home in Canterbury Road Toorak. When Thomas' wife dies in childbirth, Alice's life changes dramatically and unexpectedly. In answer to Thomas' request for her 'hand', Alice's parents send her to Fremantle to marry him. Their story is told lovingly by their granddaughter, Denise Tobin Shine, as though she is sitting on their shoulders. She has skilfully blended fictional characters, with the facts based on their lives who inhabit their 19th and early 20th century world. Finally, in their old‐age, they are able take great pride in the success of the family funeral business ‐ Tobin Brothers Funerals ‐ which four of their sons founded in 1934.

Most people increasingly appreciate that true happiness can only be found through finding what is meaningful for each of us, and the purpose it then informs in life. Equally, most people struggle with the “how to” of this quest. In the genre and style of Paulo Coelho’s novel The Alchemist, psychiatrist, George Blair‐West has crafted a multi‐award winning story that takes the reader on the journey of how to actually negotiate the most challenging of life’s quests. Set in the closing of the era of the Knights Templar, The Way of The Quest follows the 16‐year‐old reluctant hero of this adventure story, as he runs in anger from his privileged life at Queen Elizabeth’s court. Francis Bacon escapes to the magical Mont St Michel off the coast of France where he is taken under the wing of Catherine, The Mont’s physician, who introduces him to a secret society. Francis is adopted by the great minds who have gathered on the island – imprisoned by a naïve King who had no idea he was facilitating the very thing he feared the most –a concentration of wisdom, pushing the edges of knowledge and spiritual awareness. About the Author Through his twenty‐five years as a trauma therapist, psychiatrist, Dr George Blair‐West, has delved deeply into the very essence of the human state, how to manage fear and the path to not just surviving, but flourishing. The Way of the Quest, his third book, was a finalist in the Visionary Fiction category of the International Book Awards and received the Silver Medal from the American Living Now Book Awards in the Inspirational Fiction category. Recently, it won the USA’s Pinnacle Book Achievement Award in the Inspirational category.

Halfway down, the treacherous loose gravel gave way and her feet slid out from under her, making Aisley scream. She sat down hard, scraping the heels of both hands painfully on the stony ground. She put her head on her bent knees and sobbed. How had things gotten so crazy so quickly? When sixteen year old Aisley Brannon first comes to live at Sheldon's Seat, little does she know of the tragic history she is about to uncover. A school project throws her together with five friends as they decide to make her home the subject of their presentation. What ensues is a hundred year old journey of mystery and discovery, running alongside the turmoil of a modern teenage love story. Aisley and her friends ride a rollercoaster of intrigue, heartbreak and disaster before the truth is finally revealed. About the Author An ardent lover of books from day one, Mandi has been reading and writing fiction her entire life, and has always wanted to be an author. Surrounded by books since childhood, she was besotted early on by the likes of Charlotte Bronte, Frances Hodgson Burnett, and of course, JRR Tolkien. Her first copy of Jane Eyre, given to her at age ten, was re‐read over and over until it literally fell apart. Mandi still adores reading and she has encouraged this love and respect for books in her children as well. Six Steps Down is Mandi’s debut novel. It and the sequel she is currently writing come from ideas formed over time inspired by many things, but predominantly by her love for Victoria’s beautiful, rugged coastline.

Truth was, he didn't know anything about Australia except that it was a long way away, it was sunny, there were kangaroos, his friends weren't there, and they called football soccer . What was there to look forward to about that? Edward Megs Morrison is starting at a new school. That's hard enough, but to do it in a foreign land makes it even more uncomfortable. At least Megs speaks the language...sort of. Luckily, football is an international password, and football just happens to be something Edward Morrison loves ‐ but the school
After a 5‐0 demolition of Bayside Blues in Pennendale Primary's first real match, Megs is on cloud nine. Particularly after bagging a hat‐trick with half the school watching. But after scouring the papers for Val's report, he is disappointed to see that there are only a couple of lines in the Pennendale Press next to the lawn bowls section and above an ad for Barb and Pete's Bloomin' Great Nursery. Not quite the big‐time Megs was expecting, that's for sure. But Meg's competitive spirit will soon be tested when the Wanderes discover that a major prize awaits the year's champions.

A refugee from Sudan is introduced as a new character at Pennendale Primary and player with the Pennendale Wanderers. Megs and the 'Vootball Kids' begin to see their own lives through his eyes and the hardship of his background, and once Megs overcomes his initial jealousy, the two become friends united by their 'crazy legged', trick‐filled version of the world game. It's summer in Pennendale and the holidays are a haze of sunshine, flies, barbeques, trips, icecreams from the milk bar, icecreams at friends' houses and icecreams from the magical vans that drive around the streets playing music to entice young kids.

In Book 5 of the acclaimed Megs series, Edward 'Megs' Morrison and the Vootball Kids are confronted with issues both on and off the pitch that make them take a good, hard look at what they like about Vootball - and resort to some unusual measures to fight for it. Off-field issues are reflected in difficulties faced on the pitch. The Simpfenator is going off the rails, Mrs Morrison is slowly losing it, and the pressure of performing in the state team seems to highlight the fact that sometimes parents should just sit in a rocking chair, read the paper and let the kids play. 'Megs and the Wonder Strike is about finding balance in life, about the different shapes and sizes of bullying, and about sticking up for what you believe in. Maybe it's also about you

Do you have a story? Everyone has a story to tell. Sometimes many stories. What's Your Story? is a beautiful book about freindship. The backdrop is the First Settlement and it describes the friendship of a li ttle orphan boy from England, Leonard and his friendship with a little Aboriginal girl called Milba. Leonard is intrigued by Australia's fauna as it is completely different to anything Leonard had previously seen, and it is with this, the story develops. What's Your Story? uses ceramic artwork created from the renowned and celebrated Australian artist Bern Emmerichs and written by Melbourne writer Rose Giannone.

If only you knew what garden gnomes were really up to. Who hasn’t heard about stolen gnomes or seen them travelling the world, sending postcards back to their perplexed owners? 'The True Book of Gnomes' gives you all the inside information on the world of gnomes: where they live (up trees), what they eat (lots!), gnome magic, writing in runes, gnomes of the world, and how to recognise a member of the Garden Gnome Liberation Front. Written by 11‐year‐old Sam who rescues a gnome called Tomte from gnomenappers, this book has all the tips and tricks you’ll need for gnome care. There are heaps of different text types in the book: stories, interviews, quizzes, so as well as being engaging for readers 7+ it will also attract reluctant readers and ESL students of all ages. This book is quirky, unusual and imaginative. It's genre defying. And that's a big plus.

Definitely nothing ordinary about this cat… a talking kitten with a big secret, yet hasn't spoken a single word in the Pet Shop for two long weeks, leaving the Shopkeeper totally unaware he is about to give away the most amazing animal he has ever had in his shop, until a slip of the cat’s tongue changes everything, as the greedy and cunning shopkeeper, does everything in his power to prevent the kitten from leaving. This amusing tale, the first of three, will delight children from 7‐11 years, as they follow the escapades of this feisty little kitten, from the Pet Shop to the Courtroom.

The sandwich soon grows taller than he is, but fortunately there’s a ladder. Sammy saws holes through the ceilings and carries on stacking his sandwich. He can make it even higher by going through the skylight, and with the help of a crane he’s able to top off this creation with an olive and a sprig of parsley. And then ... Beautifully illustrated by the students at St Dominic’s Centre for Hearing Impaired children in NSW. When Abby question’s her father Steve about his obsession with stockpiling fly spray, he sits her down and tells her the story that started it all. Steve then proceeds to tell Abby the completely true story of Patrick the Cicada, an insect living in 1956 who (with the help of plenty of other animal friends) stands up to the biggest bully in the backyard, a Parakeet named Leslie. 1956 was monumental year in Australian history. It was the first year you could actually buy cans of fly spray. It was also the same year that televisions were introduced, and it was the same year the Olympics were held in Melbourne. Were all these events related to Patrick’s story? SPOILER ALERT: Yes. They were. Why else would I mention them? Back then there were also these giant orange cubes floating way up in the sky, invisible to the human eye. But I don’t have time to go into them right now. This story is more than just an environmental hippy attack on people who spray fly spray all over the place. And it’s more than an anti‐bullying campaign. This is a story about the importance of family. This story is about sticking up for your friends, no matter what species you are. About the author Rob Towner’s last adventure (Romy’s Garden Adventures: Christmas City) was the Number 1 downloaded children’s book on Amazon last Christmas. This year, Rob’s weird and wonderful imagination returns in this hilarious tale of animal mateship.Rob is the Secretary for the Newcastle Sub‐branch of the CBCA, a Role Model for Books In Homes Australia, a friend of the National Year of Reading, a proud member of SCBWI and a member of the Hunter Writers Centre. His passion in life is making kids smile.
