December 2015 50th Anniversary edition of Wild Cat Falling Not sure if I have said before that we will have a 50th Anniversary edition of Mudrooroo’s Wild Cat Falling. This has had many settings over the years and we are pleased to announce the return. The 50th Anniversary edition carries a long piece by Mudrooroo on the history of Wild Cat Falling and a narrative on his own life. https://edrolo.com.au/vce/subjects/english/vce-englishcontext-identity-and-belonging/ Moroccan Soup Bar Full page in the Melbourne Age this week, stock due on October 23rd and to be featured on The Project, Monday 26th October. Cuts it fine, but we can’t get the publisher to postpone this media coup. I saw an air mail advance this week and it is certainly worth $44.95 – it should be a contender for a Cook Book design award. I have a feeling it should go into reprint by the end of December. If you are a bookseller who takes the best books home you will need to take this from your first delivery. And if you have only ordered one or two copies then get set for a long list of special orders. Internet Wars I found out today that the author is touring UK and is part of the BBC global media thrust with the work. Author Fergus Hanson has a spectacular CV, quite stunning! http://www.fundtoendslavery.org/who-we-are/our-people/ fergus-hanson/ http://www.lowyinstitute.org/people/fergus-hanson We will relist on this order form as the book will be a strong special order support. Also Hillary Clinton's campaign manager just tweeted to 800,000 people what a great book it is. So we are getting good coverage Richard Fidler This week’s Richard Fidler DJA book is “With Just One Suitcase”. If you have not read it you will find it memorable and the coincidences of life make it reading at a propelled rate. (The publisher Wild Dingo published the “Tainted Trial of Farah Jama” which we have sold with excellent results.) http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/two-boys-from-wartornromania-reunited-in-sydney-25-years-later-20150611ghlkxb.html Stephen Ungar I met with Stephen Ungar from Hinkler Books to discuss the rise and rise of Harriet Clare and her adventures. Due to the continued sell through of the first two in the series there has been a third title released in November and a fourth title in February next year. The series is written by the best selling and highly talented Louise Park http://www.louisepark.com.au/ Author of the “Zac Power” series as well as “Boy vs Beast” We have plenty of stock and can assist with reading copies if you wish to follow my cue and read them. Pity my girls are in the mid thirties and forties!
Brands I am not really obsessed with data; or maybe I am. My conquest recently has been to look at our book offering based on “Brands” – not the household publisher names (we don’t have any household publisher names). What we do have are durable brands which are always the basis of our reorders – day after day / week after week. We are always paying sizable remittances to these “Brands” Who are they? Not in any order. Lisa Messenger Secret Girls Business Sharon Witt Arthur Upfield (digital only) And The Weed Foragers Handbook. I look at the daily sales and these properties sustain our business on an ongoing basis; we constantly have to reorder and every day the demand is satisfied. And what goes with good brands – low returns. I hope you are getting your share of co summer traffic for these books. New books As we are a simple book distribution business we don’t have to conform to the logic of a major publisher. Many times I wish we did; but it is what it is . So this week the phone still rings with the constant stream of books to release before Christmas. That is what this list is about. We have one other new title list for the year after that – calling it “Vacation Reading Guide”. The output of small publishers and self publishers is unabated. We update our webpages on a daily basis; we make a daily onix in stock file. Enjoy the talent of the industry writers this Christmas and listen to what the consumers request – we are ready for those stock replenishments. Almost forgot to plug one of the books and one of our sales agents. The book is “Only the Empty Sky” by Russell Kelly. Sort of a long novella (can I say that?) and has a beautiful period of setting as well as the location of Lord Howe Island. I have to finish tomorrow night so as I can give my copy to an old friend this weekend. I had coffee with Trevor Klein in Adelaide last week. What momentum he carries for our books; keep it up Trevor we all need your inspiration. Thanks DJ

For much of the World War II conflict, Japan had been a safe haven for its citizens, far, far away from Germany’s relentless advance in Europe and the daily horrors of such events as the London blitz, concentration camps and the fall of France. But Alex Faure always felt that one day the war would come with a vengeance to the Land of the Rising Sun, although even he was astonished by the ferocity with which the Allied forces exacted their retribution on the place he’s always called home. Up until then, life had been good for Alex in Japan. The son of a French father and White Russian mother, he grew up and went to school in the port of Yokohama. The local community of foreigners was a tight knit, highly social group, the bulk of whom spent their summers at the holiday playground of Karuizawa in the mountains. As a gaijin or European with a command of English, French and Japanese, Alex looked forward to a good life in Japan after graduating from school and completing his tertiary education at Harvard in the US. The morning of December 7, 1941, put an end to those expectations. The surprise attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbour immediately changed Japan’s status as a neutral in the European war. From that time on life became increasingly difficult for Alex, his mother and sister, particularly after his father fled to Vietnam to avoid arrest by the Tokko - Japanese special secret police. With his father’s export business in tatters and the last of his mother’s jewellery sold off, Alex was fortunate enough to secure a job at the Banque de l’Indochine, a French bank in Tokyo, while many of his European friends were locked out of work by the increasingly suspicious Japanese. Here he became embroiled in the murky world of propaganda, politics and clandestine financial deals, all as the war closed in. In order to survive and support his mother and sister, Alex had to sidestep the suspicions of his French superiors at the bank, keep secrets from those he loved, avoid the prying eyes of the infamous Kempeitai secret police, and somehow survive the devastating Tokyo bombings which claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians. Dragons in the Forest is the amazing true story of Alex Faure’s life behind the tinted glass of an inscrutable society that could never acknowledge the fallibility of its leaders, nor foresee its potential demise. Even to utter an opinion that the war might not be going as well as suggested by the movie reels would be an act of treason punishable by death. Peter Yeldham masterfully interlaces excerpts from Alex’s diary with real events in wartime Japan, producing a riveting tale of life as a foreigner in a strange land at a very dangerous time.

Our indigenous people of Australia are three percent of the total Australian population. But of that three percent the last statistics reveal that at least 50 percent of that population is affected by some form of disability. This is a very high number for our people. A lot of our people haven't connected with agencies, because of the 'Stolen Generation', it's the fear of having a child removed from them and that child growing up institutionalised. I am extremely passionate about it‐ fighting the fear, fighting the racism. Being indigenous and having a disability you get a double whammy. ‐ Gayle Rankine, Chairperson, First Peoples Disability Network (Australia). Chairperson, of the Indigenous Persons With Disabilities Global Network. There are thirty stories in this publication and each story is intertwined with Australia's complex social and political history. A history that has resulted in the unacceptably high rates of disability within the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Every participant of this project has revealed their very personal story in order to draw much needed attention to these critical issues. This catalogue has been produced with the support of the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to accompany the Unfinished Business Exhibition, which was shown that the United Nations' 2014 World Conference of Indigenous Peoples in New York .

The book commences with a discussion of the policy issues as to whether Australia needed submarines and then the decision to buy AE1 and AE2. It then goes through their coming to Australia, the tragic loss of AE1 in New Guinea on 14 September 1914 and the bravery and daring of the AE2 crew in penetrating the Dardanelles on Anzac Day in 1915. The history then goes on to deal with the J-Class submarines that came to Australia in 1919, the first Oxley and Otway (which went to the RN in the Depression in 1931), and the fact that in World War Two, Australia had no submarines except for the Dutch K IX whose career ended with a battery explosion in 1944. Then the period of the RN Fourth Submarine Squadron based in Sydney is dealt with, including some of the happy memories of those who served in it. The book sets out the story of the new RAN submarine arm from 1963. When Oxley (S 57) arrived in Neutral Bay, Sydney, in 1967, so began the new Australian era of submarines. The basic dates of the O Boats are outlined, along with the building and basic dates of the Collins class. The book deals with some of the issues about the intelligence patrols, about the Future Submarine and also records the numerous plaques, services, memorials and museums in Australia and overseas dedicated to Australian submarines and Australian and NZ submariners. There is a detailed chapter on special submarine craft such as the X-Craft in which some of the submarine heroes like Max Sheean, Henty HentyCreer and Ken Briggs served, and in some cases died. The appendices to this book are numerous and detailed by a strong team from around the world, including Garry Mellon, Barrie Downer and Pat Heffernan. Numerous photographs have been collected and included in the book to fit in with the text from Darren Brown and others. The appendices also list all Australian submariners who have qualified and served up until mid-2014, including those who have died.

This is a book that all Victorian race‐goers and punters of all sports will find an entertaining and absorbing read. Bookmaking has always been the most colourful and vibrant part of racing in Victoria. Betting on Victorian racecourses established the unique atmosphere that existed until the advent of Sky Channel, and the more recent rapid changes in technology, that has seen racecourses stripped of the big crowds that attended meetings throughout the state. This book tells the stories of Victoria's doyen bookies as well as the eccentric bookmakers who plied their trade against many of the great characters of the tracks. There are many colourful tales of bookies and punters, particularly in the good times where big rings existed, and spirited betting occurred on Victoria's racecourses. It tells the stories of the huge betting battles that took place on greyhound tracks, and the difficulty bookies had of winning at the "red hots," the changing landscape of sports betting, and the difficulty Victorian bookmakers had as they saw their clients slip through their fingers to the Darwin bookmakers, due to legislative inaction by successive State Governments.
Author Information John Adams is the author of the award winning book, OVER THE HURDLES:The History of Jumps Racing in Australia, also published by Melbourne Books. He has been closely associated with racing in Victoria in numerous executive positions since the mid 1970s.

Watching More Racehorses is the long‐awaited sequel to Dr Geoffrey Hutson's original and ground‐breaking book, Watching Racehorses. In this book Geoffrey takes his quest for the Holy Grail of punting, picking winners based on looks in the mounting yard to a new and higher level. Observations on over 50 new variables and a database of over 50,000 horses show that horsewatchers attending at the track and betting on behaviour enjoy a considerable and profitable advantage. Geoffrey also explores some of the issues confronting an ageing and serious fun punter, including coping with the unlikely contingency of monetary loss, the intelligence of horses, the lessons learnt from laying losers on Betfair, and the taxation of gambling winnings. Written in Geoffrey's inimitable style, Watching More Racehorses is a clear and highly entertaining guide to the art of behavioural handicapping. And his conclusion? Bet on bad behaviour. Bet on horses to lose!
Author Information Geoffrey Hutson was born and bred in Melbourne. He spent over 20 years at the University of Melbourne as a Research Fellow in Animal Behaviour, studying the behaviour of a wide range of domestic animals, including sheep, cattle, pigs and horses. He has written numerous articles for scientific journals, newspapers and magazines, including Applied Animal Behaviour Science, New Scientist, The Age, The Sunday Age, and Turf Monthly magazine. He left the university in 1998 to pursue a career as a full‐time punter. He now bets on the stockmarket for serious money and on racehorses for serious fun.

Modern parenting is in crisis. Parents put more time and effort into raising their children than ever before, but children's self‐esteem, resilience and wellbeing don't appear to be improving. In her work as a clinical psychologist and researcher, Judith Locke, PhD sees a disturbing link between high‐effort parenting and poor outcomes for children. She believes parents make their children's lives too easy by doing too much for them and giving too much to them. This type of parenting produces 'the bonsai child', an apparently perfect child raised in a protected environment and nurtured on attention to their every need. Dependent on constant care, the bonsai child can remain confined by their ideal conditions, incapable of coping in the real world. In The Bonsai Child, Judith explains why the current generation of parents and children are in this mess, why parents are encouraged to parent this way, and what often happens to their children. Most importantly, she offers practical and realistic strategies that have worked for hundreds of parents she has helped. These strategies will work for you, too. The Bonsai Child will change the way you think about parenting. This book will show you the best way to be a good parent for your child. It will teach you how to encourage your child's confidence and resilience. It is an essential resource for parents and anyone working with families or children today. Author Information Judith Locke (PhD, MPsychol (Clin), BA (Hons), M Fine Arts, B Educ, MAPS) is a clinical psychologist and former teacher who specialises in parenting and child wellbeing. She is the director of her private practice, and her training company Confident and Capable®. As a clinician, she provides psychological counselling to children, adolescents, parents, and families. As a trainer, she provides dynamic psychological training sessions in parenting, resilience, staff wellbeing and related fields to parents and staff in schools, childcare centres, and government and community organizations, as well as private companies. Judith is also a Visiting Research Fellow at the Queensland University of Technology where she researches modern parenting, child and parent wellbeing, and how children and parents interact with academic environments. The Bonsai Child is Judith’s first book. She is currently working on her second, The Bonsai Student. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

If you ask you will get only silence, when you are silent people never stop asking. It's taboo, and the very word makes you shrivel up. But some don't get a choice, some don't get to shrivel away or avoid the conversation because for some depression is an unforgivable housemate that doesn't let up. From the mouth of a seventeen year old who had been through it all, the chance to do it over and not endure that suffering could not be bought with all the gold in the world, so there must be another way. So if I stand up, and share my story, would things be different for everyone? I wish I could say it was worth it, that I am a better person because of it ‐ maybe I am? Still I wish this journey upon noone. It is dark, lonely and hopeless and it is getting bigger, more prevalent every single day. If you had one chance to change it, to avoid what feels like an inevitable consequence of life would you take it? The biggest question I ask myself; if my parents had known what they knew now, would I have suffered? Would it have turned out differently? Would it have been okay? That's what it is like seeing into the fog.

Build Your Leader Identity is a practical guide to harnessing your unique leadership potential. At its heart is the idea that every person has the potential to lead, including you, by drawing on your personal attributes, values, and life experiences. This book aims to give you the skills to build your own unique leader identity – the self‐expression of who you are as a leader. It is a personal approach that asks you to consider how your core values and individual history affect your leadership, whatever your position. It questions how events in your life, and your multiple identities such as daughter or son, manager or team member, may have reinforced or undermined your ideas about your potential to lead, or what leadership means to you. It is a process that celebrates diversity; a journey where one size for leadership does not fit all. Ultimately, I believe it has the potential to transform the way you think about yourself and your ability to become a more empowered, conscious leader in your chosen area.
Author Information Suzi Skinner, M. App. Sci. (Coaching Psychology), is a researcher, facilitator, executive coach, and the managing director of Roar People, Selftalk Pty Limited – a boutique consultancy in Sydney. Suzi works internationally with organisations to transform leadership, accelerate change toward more inclusive workplaces, and enhance employee engagement. Suzi is a Harnisch Scholar and her research, entitled ‘Understanding the Importance of Professional Identity and Gender in Developing Women Leaders’, was awarded the first prize at the 2012 annual conference of McLean Hospital and Harvard University’s Institute of Coaching. An aspect of this research has been published in the academic peer‐reviewed journal, Coaching – An International Journal of Theory, Research and Practice in 2014.

‘This handbook is not for the bookshelf but will be kept close at hand as an essential and trusted palliative care resource.’ ‐ A/Prof Colm Cunningham Director, Dementia Centre The Palliative Care Handbook is an internationally best‐selling and highly accessible resource for supporting palliative care where ever it occurs. Not only widely used by doctors and nurses, it is has a strong record of assisting patients and families as they seek simple, brief and accurate information about the symptoms and treatments they encounter. ‘Recently when my mother was facing her last days, I had trouble understanding the medications that were being recommended and symptoms that were of concern. I came across a copy of The Palliative Care Handbook and within minutes found a brief and easy to understand description of the things my mum was going through – and not just physical, but emotional and spiritual too. I then looked up the drugs that had been prescribed and this helped me feel much better informed.’ Andrew, NSW. The three authors are international experts in their fields and author Professor Rod MacLeod recently was appointed Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to palliative care.

AVAILABLE NOW An important catalogue, which introduces the Ethnological collections conserved in the Vatican Museums, presenting to a wide public, for the first time, works of every age, from prehistory to the contemporary age, and from every part of the world. The catalogue, in addition to providing a comprehensive overview of the extraordinary heterogeneity of the ethnology collection, proposes to introduce the cultural richness of the extra‐European civilizations, promoting the diversity as a new perspective of knowledge. The first part is dedicated to indigenous collections, and each section exposes the most representative artifacts of every continent; the second part focuses on oriental collections, even these divided into sections indicating the area of origin. Both indigenous and oriental collections include a special section reserved for Christian art. Among the works, there are devotional objects, statues, prehistoric stones, masks and musical instruments, as well as the prestigious painted rocks of the Wandjina Song Cycle and Chinese painted paper scrolls. The vast iconographic apparatus is quite suggestive, combining archive photographs and numerous colour images, evocative of habits and customs of different peoples and cultures, and celebratory also of the variety and beauty of the artifacts, true witnesses of "other" worlds, still little known.

Tasmania’s first full liquor licence for a restaurant went to John Licandro’s Martini in Burnie. That was in 1968, but there had been wine on the menu at The Bistro (a basement restaurant under the Ship Hotel in Hobart) since 1961. Was it legal? Well, probably. There was nowhere like the cellar‐restaurant in Collins Street, and nobody like its charismatic maitre d’, ‘Pat’ Collins, by turns charming, annoying and shocking to his drinkers and diners. Pat had achieved a great deal since his inauspicious arrival as a post‐war migrant in Melbourne. Today The Bistro, once an important social centre for young professionals, is remembered only by rumour of scandal and transgression, and the part played by Pat Collins in Tasmania’s ‘coming of age’ is forgotten. The ripples that he helped stir after 1961 grew into our present tourist hospitality, the legal acceptance of ‘gay’ relationships, and even the green political movement that spread worldwide after the destruction of Lake Pedder. The excitements and achievements of those years need to be gathered up and remembered before everyone who was around at the time falls victim to memory lapse ‐ or worse. Sweetbreads out of season begins that process. “Fasten your seatbelts and prepare for a wonderful rollicking Rabelaisian chronicle of the life and times of…Pat

Broads Abroad ‐ Worldly Wise takes the reader on a whimsical world tour, matching quirky images by award‐winning photographer Peter Derrett with the insights, tips and flights of fancy accumulated by Broads Abroad women’s travel network founder Mandy Rowe. The book shares little bits of wisdom about travel, each story delivering a small message about topics as far‐ranging as love, acceptance, dress sizes, slowing down, dining alone or taking a risk. The women you’ll see aren’t models…they’re members of the worldwide Broads Abroad network who were willing to step out of their comfort zone and provide a focus for Mandy’s engaging literary snapshots. Mature women testing their boundaries and extending their horizons is what Mandy’s travel network is all about. She’s urging solo female travellers to forget about ticking the tourist boxes and instead stay with the Broads Abroad who are opening their doors to fellow‐members, or just meeting up for a cuppa and a chat about the place they love. Broads Abroad – Worldly Wise captures this trend and offers a tempting glimpse into the world of the 50+ solo woman traveller.

A Broad Abroad: One Woman’s Journey takes the reader on a rollicking ride through tropical Queensland, 90’s London and exotic Saudi Arabia with Australian psychologist, mother and former expat wife Mandy Rowe. Bond with Mandy as she overcomes isolation in the desert, and rejoice with her as she discovers the unexpected talents that begin to emerge as she struggles with homesickness and enforced idleness in a compound in Riyadh. Ever wondered how you might cope in such a situation? This refreshingly down‐to earth first‐time author engagingly documents the way the worlds of theatre, visual arts and writing gradually open up to her, allowing her to establish herself as a successful painter, children’s author and businesswoman. The intuitive fellowship of women is another important theme in this memoir. Readers will relate strongly to the strength of the mutual female bonds of friendship and support which, on her return to Australia, eventually lead Mandy to establish Broads Abroad, a dynamic online women’s travel network. A Broad Abroad: One Woman’s Journey inspires women to value and develop their own achievements, to travel and explore, and to embrace the opportunities life holds out to them.

The central character to the novel is Robert, who grew up in a small country town in north Queensland. It covers two years in his life from age fourteen to sixteen in years 1939/40. Robert's teen age years were far from ordinary. He had many exciting adventures and plenty of close relationships with several different girls. However he had really strong feelings for only one. A liaison which has a sad conclusion with an air of mystery. He was unusually shy in the presence of girls yet seemed to acquire many of them as his friends. His sexual urges were strong so that his friendship with girls had but one objective in mind ‐ Sex! It took him a long time to learn that not all girls who were friendly towards him were necessarily promiscuous easy conquests. The first year of the narrative covers his year at High School in Cairns, his interaction with fellow students, and his difficulty in combining his academic interests with his liking for the company of girls. At the end of the academic year he returns home to further adventures in an environment he loves. Year two of the tale has Robert quitting High School and entering employment in various jobs in which he was always striving for recognition as someone older than he really was. He considered himself to be mature enough to be classified as an adult, although many of his actions belied this assessment. The novel ends with Robert aged sixteen entering an induction centre at an army base. Here in spite of his small stature and his obvious youth he finally achieves what he has been striving for, acceptance into an adult world.

In Australia in 1972‐72, there were 10,000 adoptions. In NSW in 1969, roughly 2,000 young women, most of them unmarried, gave up their children for adoption. Helen Armstrong, aged 17, fell pregnant that year and was persauded to have her baby son Simon adopted out. This theme is closely based on Kathleen James' own story. Helen still carries a buried grief. Birth mothers had no contact with their children, and only minimal initial information was ever provided. Years later when Helen is divorced and beginning a new phase of life, with a 19 year old son Nick, she hopes for a reunion with Simon when he turns 21. At this time Helen falls in love with a single parent Marco Lucini and the family secrets of both the Armstrongs and thr Lucinis gradually come to light. Helen learns a lot about her beloved Uncle Mick (a gambler and 'ladies' man.') who together with her Auntie Vera ran the Armstrong's Family Hotel in Katoomba back in the 1930s. Finding out about Mick's all too human failings and his troubled past helps her to come to terms with her own. Marco also learns how complicated families can be when he discovers a whole new family of 'outlaws' in Italy, ('outlaws' being those parenting or born outside of marriage). The story takes us from a Sydney waterway to the NSW South Coast and Blue Mountains, and to Parma and Venice in Italy. The three narrators: Helen, Marcus and Mick span 2 generations, in alternating chapters, giving the reader three

Evolution is the cause of everything in the universe, or so we are taught. But is this based in scientific truth? Could much of what we have learned at school, and what the media and evolutionists suggest about the origins of life and the universe, be contrary to the real scientific facts? After 15 years of research, and written in everyday language, Evolution Unraveled is the only place on earth where Evolutionary Theory is explained from the very beginning of the universe to the present day, where every major evolutionary step is dissected and compared with the facts that science already knows. In this book, you will discover that the science of evolution is not what you thought it was: • Does science confirm the big bang? • Why can’t scientists create life from inanimate matter? • What did Charles Darwin really say about evolution? • What does the fossil record say about the origins of humankind? • Why is Evolutionary Theory still a theory and not a fact? • Can any creature change itself into something else, and has this ever actually happened?
Author Information Randall Harris was born in Adelaide, South Australia and has tertiary qualifications in Business Management. Researching over a period of fifteen years he has uncovered a staggering array of wonderful and amazing revelations that are presented in this book, Evolution Unraveled. Randall hopes that the vast range of information presented will challenge your current understanding on accepted science.

Research confirms that the very best remedy for high blood pressure, better than any pill, is to eat a diet full of fresh produce rich in nutrients and low in sodium. And that’s where this cookbook comes in. It is based on DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), the proven, gold‐standard eating plan for reducing high blood pressure, which, if left unchecked, can lead to heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. The heroes of this regimen are fruits, vegetables, fat‐free or low‐fat dairy products, whole grains, seeds and nuts, fish, poultry and legumes. Plus, using ingredients such as herbs and spices will help reduce a dependency on saturated fats, sugars and salt. There’s no need to cook separate meals for the person with high blood pressure — everyone will enjoy these recipes, too.

The book is a journey Gaye and her son Lucas, began together in his early teens. The conversations were taken from a span of around eight years, so some are quite naive and others...well, not. Gaye and Lucas, put some tricky topics on the table addressing them openly and honestly. The book answers some very personal and potentially embarrassing questions with a positive sensitivity and a good dose of common sense. The book is not only for teens dealing with the possibility of being gay, it is also for other young people going through puberty where there seems to be an inbuilt curiosity about homosexuality and experimentation with same gender sex is not unusual. In any case, TEEN QUEERIES will prove to be an informative, interesting read for teens, their parents, friends, teachers, coaches and anyone else who has a teen queerie in their life...and for those of us that are just curious.

Author Information I was born in the small country town of St George in South-West Queensland, Australia where I was fortunate to spend my childhood living on my parents’ cotton farm. As a child I loved stories and would often write and illustrate little books. It has been my life-long dream to be an author and illustrator. As a teenager I was discouraged to pursue this as a career due to the competitive nature of the book industry. Thoroughly enjoying the idea of working with young children and delighting at the chance to discover first hand from classroom experience, what works well in children’s literature, I embarked on a teaching career spanning a decade and a half. The majority of which was teaching in a North London School in England. As a dedicated teacher I did not have a great deal of time to focus on any writing or illustrating – however I greatly enjoyed many European holidays! I returned to my hometown where I had the privilege of teaching at my old Primary School under my former Headmaster for 18 months. Later moving on to a private school in North Brisbane. After having my two boys and taking a break from teaching, I was blest to have the opportunity to write and illustrate my first book “The Magic In Boxes”.

WHERE DO TEACHERS GO AT NIGHT, WHEN WE’VE ALL GONE HOME AND THEY’VE TURNED OUT THE LIGHT? From skinny‐dipping in the Caribbean to climbing Mount Fuji, discover what our everyday teachers get up to behind our backs.
Author Information Leisa Papa majored in Communications and Sociology at university, and went on to work in sales and marketing for 15 years. She found her new calling once she became a mother, and now spends her time in sunny Brisbane, Australia, with her husband, son and daughter. The character of Daisy came to life when Leisa’s son Daniel was two and half years old, and Leisa penned this story to remove the distress from the process of fading out the dummy, making it a fun adventure instead.
About the Illustrator Karen is a freelance illustrator and designer living in Brisbane, Australia, with her husband and two children. Karen grew up in beautiful New Zealand, where as soon as she could hold a pencil, she was drawing and colouring. These days (when not basking in the sun with her two soppy cats), Karen can be found squirrelled away in her art studio, illustrating picture books and educational material for school children. Karen’s other passion is creating the art and design for postage stamps from all over the world.

Annie’s world had always felt grey. It lacked the colour, adventure and magic she so often dreamed of. Then by chance, Annie met Rosemary...
Author Information Victoria Breheny is a herbalist, naturopath and energetic healer who runs her own business on the Mornington Peninsula. Inspired from a young age by her mother’s love of the garden, Victoria is most at peace when she is in nature. She can often be found picking flowers, tending to her vegetable patches or collecting herbs from her garden. Victoria has two superb daughters, an equally gorgeous husband, two handsome Labradors, four cheeky chickens and two comical Guinea pigs – all of whom make her smile everyday. In Victoria’s opinion, life couldn’t be much sweeter; she adores her work, feels blessed to be surrounded by wonderful people and is now able to share her debut children’s book with the world.
About the Illustrator Jemma Phillips is a designer, author and illustrator. Previously an artist of children’s walls and Christmas cards, her watercolour illustrations are inspired by childhood memories, animals and the English and Australian countrysides. Jemma was born in Cambridge, England then moved to Melbourne, Australia as a child. She studied at Brighton Bay School of Art, Design and Photography before doing a Bachelor of Design at Monash University. She now lives on the Mornington Peninsula with her boyfriend, Denham, their two dogs, Bailey and Diesel, and cat, Charlotte. Earlier in 2015, Jemma released her first children’s book, Bucket Sheep. Victoria Breheny’s The Incredible Edible Garden is the second children’s book Jemma has illustrated.

Rufus the fox is returning to the Goonoo Forest to seek revenge ... but the one‐eyed chook and her pals stand in his way. Can love, courage and friendship save the day? The third book of adventures for Sheila the One‐Eyed Chook. About the Author Originally from Western Sydney, it was at a mature age that Pat Clarke decided to embark on a second career as a writer. She had always loved stories, and as a child had enjoyed the works of Enid Blyton, as well as telling a few originals of her own. Pat has since published four books. Howie the Yowie follows her previous titles; A One-Eyed Chook Called Sheila, The Magic Forest of Goonoo and The Flying Lesson. Now living in Dubbo, Pat finds inspiration in the beautiful Goonoo State Forest, near where her family have a property called ‘Spring Creek’. She hopes her writing will create a love and respect for the Australian wildlife and flora. About the Illustrator Graeme Compton is an award-winning portrait, wildlife and fantasy artist whose first love is illustration and cartoons. The 2013 Grand Champion of the Gunnedah Art and Pottery Exhibition, Graeme has been selected as a finalist two years running in the Mortimer Art Prize, and has numerous high commendations for his work. His collaboration with Pat Clarke began in 2012 with the A One-Eyed Chook Called Sheila project. The 2013 publication of this book is a feather in their caps. It is a happy and productive partnership, with two more books in the wings, and now this latest instalment. Graeme is also a piano teacher and loving husband to Donna.
