Words from the Wise

December 2016 A few years ago I took on the role of sales representative for the company in Canberra and South East Coast of NSW. Much of the territory had vibrant and at times off beat independent booksellers, yet over the 4 years it has changed and it brings together a few of my thoughts. Other than Smiths Alternative bookshop closing and Electric Shadows closing Canberra City still has its key outlets: one that immediately comes to mind is Dymocks Canberra who holds the record for the store who has shifted most often in those 4 years. I dread the thought of shifting home, or shifting warehouses, but to shift a shop maybe 3 or 4 times in as many years; still, the new location looks great, nestled between a travel agent and David Jones. Taking the trek toward the Great Divide I pass through Cooma where two shops have gone over the 4 year period (we eventually had to do a write off on one of them - lost money). Over the Great Divide in and around the road kill and the ice on the windows of the car you now get to Merimbula to one bookseller - Collins Merimbula, a sturdy business hitched onto the local newsagent (it was once an A&R store). Over the road Booktique has gone after some years. Next town is Bega where there has only been one bookshop for as long as I can remember - Candelo Books - and they have a walk way to a coffee shop to boost the traffic flow. The once busy Batemans Bay will have its last bookshop "Hooked on Books" close in January after years of trying to remain profitable. Sadly the economics of a smaller bookshop and the limited margins don't cut it with the landlords when a frock shop or similar can work on such high margins. In all of these towns you have the choice of the limited offering of the DDS outlets. "Hooked on Books" was also an A&R franchise store. Staying with Batemans Bay for a few words: it was the coastal playground for the Canberra elite to have a weekender and spend vacation time there. What happened? These three coastal towns appear to be buoyant in terms of building growth, so why not bookshop growth? Have readers deserted traditional bricks and mortar at these towns? Or has the online ease of limitless listing of product broken the ability of towns to support two bookstores, or in the case of Batemans Bay, no bookseller? I do not know the answer: I do know for an independent book distributor it makes the cost of the fly away trips more problematic. Yet I enjoy my books and the conquest of keeping our authors and publishers in the main game.

National Library Bookshop

Speaking of the main game I am having some fun looking at the VM side of the displays especially with the star releases from Jimmy, Bruce and our Midnight Oil book. I know where my income comes from so I am delighted to see such VM thrust provided by the Midnight Oil book. David Tenenbaum has planned a media campaign all the way into Christmas and then there is a sting in the tail to come early next year: please keep up the strong VM for this book. I finished All I see is Mud and am really pleased to have this book and with the backing of the author/ publisher we have been given the green light to promote the POD availability globally with some advertising; we now need to tactically work out those foreign destination book outlets. By the way, it is quite similar in its rawness to All Quiet on the Western Front. Also started reading the first volume of the Martin Sharp biography by Lowell Tarling (ETT Imprint). What a startling life amid so many of the keys icons of entertainment and a close friend of Richard Neville. The story is peppered with his experiences with Eric Clapton, Jenny Kee, Richard Walshe, Robert Hughes and so on. Tom (the publisher) is planning a big piece in The Australian and plenty of ABC support. It took me back to the 60's hearing about those things that as a student we had only heard of and wondered about. By the way I was an upstart as a High School student, one who preferred going to Monash and Melbourne Universities for extra curricular activity it did not aid me as I missed university entry by 2 points. I have written elsewhere about Why Warriors Lie Down and Die, however this column has a wider circulation. Richard Trudgen wrote and published in the year 2000, to date it has sold some 40,000 copies without appearing on quintessential databases. I found it when reviewing a list of books on "National Reconciliation Week – Memoir and Social Commentary" and thought that if it was still in print we should pursue. Happy reading and heavy selling. Martin Sharp was an integral part of international Pop Art in the 1960s, magnified through his covers for OZ magazine in Sydney and London, his covers for Cream, and posters of Dylan, Hendrix and Donovan. His efforts at making The Yellow House and Luna Park cultural precincts were aided by his screen prints and exhibitions to flaunt the work of others, especially the singer Tiny Tim. In this first of two volumes, Lowell Tarling offers us a way into the enigmatic and reclusive artist, through interviews with Sharp and all of his trusted friends, including artists Tim Lewis, Peter Kingston, Garry Shead, photographers Greg Weight, Jonny Lewis and William Yang, film‐maker Phillippe Mora, actor Lex Marinos, musicians Mic Conway, Jeannie Lewis, Tiny Tim; Richard Neville and Jim Anderson from London Oz. Lowell Tarling was a close friend of Martin Sharp and other Yellow House artists for over forty years and has been recording interviews and discussions with Martin and the rest of us all that time. This is an extraordinary archive of primary source material of those heady and life changing times. ‐ Roger Foley‐Fogg (Ellis D Fogg) Martin Sharp, through this wonderful collage of interviews, reminds us all, that ETERNITY is just around corner. ‐ Jonny Lewis

Why Warriors Pty Ltd

“Many books have been written about the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land, Australia. This one is very different. It speaks about the real situation that we face every day, a reality that is hard for people of another culture to imagine.” - Rev. Dr. Djiniyini Gondarra OAM, Yolngu Clan Elder Why Warriors Lie Down and Die is essential reading for anyone interested in Indigenous peoples. It offers deep insights for those who want a greater understanding of the issues involved in achieving true reconciliation, and provides hope and new direction for those searching for the answers as to why “the problems” seem to persist in Aboriginal communities. In Arnhem Land, as in Indigenous communities across Australia, the situation is dire. Indigenous health in Australia is now so bad that 45% of Aboriginal men and 34% of women die before the age of 45. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are also massively over-represented in the criminal justice system. Western Australia incarcerates the Aboriginal people of its State at 9 times the rate of Apartheid South Africa. Why Warriors Lie Down and Die provides a fresh analysis of this crisis and offers examples of how Indigenous people can once again take control of their own lives. Finding the real causes requires the reader to look at it from the other side of the cultural / language divide – the side where the Yolngu people live. The book Why Warriors Lie Down and Die takes us to that side. Told using a blend of critical and exploratory thinking, deep understanding of Yolngu culture, personal experience and powerful story-telling, Why Warriors is used by universities and schools across the country. This is a book for every Australian and is considered by many to be the essential handbook for people working in cross-cultural environments with Aboriginal peoples. Author Information Richard Trudgen has been a pioneering figure in community education and development for the last 43 years; of which the last 35 have been spent working alongside the Yolngu people of North East Arnhem Land. Richard was CEO of Aboriginal Resource Development Services (ARDS) for more than 10 years, where he established Yolngu Radio in 2003. For the last 15 years, Richard has been presenting the Bridging The Gap seminars to audiences across Australia. He is the author of the seminal book on Indigenous culture “Why Warriors Lie Down and Die“. His latest big project is to develop a complete e-learning school in Yolŋu Matha, the Indigenous language of North-east Arnhem Land. Richard speaks Djambarrpuyŋu and in 2015 was a finalist for the NT Senior Australian of the year award. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

Early in 1822 an illiterate nineteen year‐old peasant in County Cork took part in a ‘Whiteboy’ action in the hope of fairer rent and more land for his struggling family. Instead, he was transported to NSW for life. The story that follows will subvert popular notions of the convict experience. Cotter’s alliance with a fierce Aboriginal leader conspired with his second ‘crime’ to introduce him to a world understood by few Europeans. The novel points to a haunting moment in Australia’s story, when white humility and aboriginal knowledge might have combined to produce a kinder stewardship across the ancient land. Few invaders experienced that fleeting possibility as intimately as Garrett Cotter. This is a story of power and exploitation, of betrayal and uncertain redemption. It offers a vivid reimagining of real events in the far wilds of a high country ‘beyond the limits’. ‘An important story of banishment, displacement, and crucial first contact, Cotter also tells of a moving and unlikely friendship between two outcasts. Here is beautiful, assured writing about people and place. A novel for readers of Kate Grenville’s The Secret River.’ ‐ Clara Finlay

Available Now Traven Collins, a hack St Kilda writer is chosen to run a Writers’ Festival up near The Flinders Ranges. Unfortunately the road to Calangula, the site of this proposed extravaganza, runs past his old town of Story’s Crossing, where he hasn’t been for thirty years. But destiny doesn’t care what Traven thinks, and a mad Kenworth truck forces Traven off the main road onto a side road to Story’s Crossing. The Cross the locals call it. It’s 2008, hot and dry from the Big Drought, and The Cross, like all Aussie towns under stress, seems quieter and smaller than the town he remembers. And in the main street Traven runs into his former Girl Friday, Carmen. He hasn’t seen her for a dozen years, She’s got a new daughter, eleven years old. Hmmm. Well he did have that one drunken night with Carmen…. He runs into Astrid, the little girl who broke his heart way back when they were on the verge of the end of childhood. She’s many years older, like Traven of course, still has the magic, and is in trouble with bad people cooking meth. And he begins to fixate on the death, all those years ago, of his childhood mate Tully, who so loved horses he was named after the mighty Tulloch. As he recalls the troubles and joys of childhood such as the love of his young life Astrid, Traven finds himself drawn into the mystery of his great friend Tully, who died by drowning in the town creek. The creek that hasn’t had water for two years. Tully was a great swimmer, a junior athlete, how could he have drowned? Meanwhile his old girlfriend Astrid has come calling for his help because she’s become involved in the ‘speed’ business. Ice. Crystal Meth. Astrid, who betrayed him so cruelly way back. He’d even left the town behind him and headed for the Big Smoke because Story’s Crossing had been his personal cross to bear…in fact way back the kids used to joke that the stops on the railway line to Adelaide were The Stations of The Cross. So he’s back and he is forced into the role of Small Town Hamlet —avenging the sins of the past, and trying to avoid the trouble that seems to be looking for him. But he can’t avoid it and Death comes looking for its pay-off. And Traven is beginning to wonder what this Writers Festival is all about. After all, it’s set in not in a one-horse town, but a zero-horse town. There will be blood. The Country Jesus, is crime & mystery novel with a love of the bush and wayward tracks. And people die as Traven investigates the ancient crime against his friend, and a modern crime involving his childhood love.

Her husband was controversial. He was in the press, in the courts and in prison. Her husband was charismatic, voluble and irrepressible. He survived shipwreck, ruin and slander. Her husband was an entrepreneur, industrialist and pioneer. We continue to drink his beer; we still attend his theatre. His legacy is concrete. His place in history is secure. But this is not his story. Sophia Degraves survives only as a silent register of birth and death. Nothing is known of her beyond the children she bore and the death she died. This catalogue says nothing of the privations and aspirations of an invisible colonial woman who built in flesh and blood what the men around her built with water and stone. This is her story, written by imagining what was real. Runner up in the Erica Bell Foundation Literature Award 2015, this book focuses on the life of Sophia Degraves, wife of Peter Degraves, the founder of Cascade Brewery and one of Tasmania’s most prominent early entrepreneurs. “A work of historical fiction in the truest sense. Overall, the effect is of a historical verisimilitude that sweeps us along as if we were walking beside Sophia in the shadow of Mount Wellington. It is a thoroughly charming book that brings to life a woman and a period that are both fascinating.” ~ Rohan Wilson, author and co-judge of the 2014 Erica Bell Literary Awards

Kate Liston‐Mills’ The Waterfowl Are Drunk! is a series of short stories set in the author’s hometown, Pambula, on New South Wales’ far south coast. A fox stalks a nest of hatching swans, loving parents deal with their child’s Down syndrome diagnosis, a close‐knit community mourns a death, a teenager is forced to give up an afternoon of surfing to spend time with her Nan. ‘Kate Liston‐Mills’s lush but precise prose and fresh perspective gives this collection about the tough stuff of ordinary life immense energy, beauty and warmth. That she manages to get depth of character and intense sense of place in such a slim collection is a true wonder, as is her ability to show the inherent drama and tragedy of everyday life without every straying into sentimentality or bleakness.’ EMILY MAGUIRE

Author Information KATE LISTON‐MILLS lives in Pambula and works as a journalist, writer, poet and teacher. Her works have been published in the Sydney Morning Herald, Daily Telegraph, Writer’s Edit, Prowlings, Tertangala, TIDE and the South Coast Writers Centre.

Steven Walker is a retired F111 pilot who restored a coaching inn at Oatlands, studied for a PhD and wrote the most entertaining and informative history of Tasmania more or less all at once. The stage‐coach was major 19thC infrastructure and its development is the story of communication, growth and entrepreneurial competition. Stage‐coaches were targets for bush rangers, run by monopolists, operated through the night and required thousands of horses and tonnes of feed.

Redrawing the boundaries of Tasmania into four whisky districts and then journeying across each one, over four years Tasmanian whisky historian and well‐respected writer Bernard Lloyd visited every Tasmanian whisky distillery, including Australia’s first, to discover their distinctive and innovative ways of Tasmanian whisky making. His pioneering journey shows how Tasmania’s native peats and barley strains, its climate and its water, together with its people —farmers, scientists, maltsters, brewers, distillers, coppersmiths, coopers, lawmakers, excise officers and brand ambassadors— combine to make the island’s world‐renowned whisky spirits.

Ngoanyana: A South African story is a vivid portrayal of growing up White in apartheid‐era South Africa. John Nieuwenhuysen’s privileged upbringing on a South African farm as the grandson of a prosperous Irish‐born ‘potato king’ contrasted starkly with the impoverished lives of the property’s African and ‘Coloured’ workers and their families. His story combines love and nostalgia for a place and country of great beauty, with sadness and remorse at the cruelty and discrimination of the harsh practices of apartheid, and customary White farmer rule. Combining one man’s personal history with that of his nation, Ngoanyana is a poignant story, honestly told, with lessons for us all about political power, the problems still faced by South Africa, and reconciliation.

Author Information John Nieuwenhuysen AM is an emeritus professor of economics at Monash University in Melbourne, and a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia. He holds the degrees of MA (Natal) and PhD (London School of Economics). Born in South Africa in 1937, he emigrated to Australia in 1963, where he began his academic career, working for twenty-six years at the University of Melbourne. Currently a board member of the Australian Multicultural Foundation, and chair of the board of the (Monash Prato) Bill Kent Foundation, his many earlier roles have included deputy chancellor of RMIT University; visiting professor at King’s College, London; chief executive of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA); foundation director of the Monash Institute for the Study of Global Movements; and foundation director of the Commonwealth Government’s Bureau of Immigration, Multicultural and Population Research. John has chaired four Victorian State Government inquiries. One of these, in 1986, led to a radical and liberalising overhaul of the State’s liquor laws, which has stood the test of time. In 2003 John received the Order of Australia for this work, and for his contribution to independent public and private sector research on multicultural, immigration, equity, indigenous, taxation, labour and industry issues.

So I am going to ask this straight out: >Are your sales down? >Are your targets harder to hit? >Are you expected to sell more? >Are you sabotaging your own success? The old saying is so true "Nothing happens until a sale is made!" However, in todays competitive environment many people don't understand that there is a formula that will increase your sales. The Confessions of a Timeshare Salesman will guide you through the sales formula leaving you with only 1 outcome, SUCCESS. If the average sales person only reads 1 sales book per year, then be above the average and read this book. I have asked this question many times, "If you had the chance to be a professional Sales Person, Doctor or Lawyer, what would you be?" I would be a salesperson... Timeshare is renown to be the hardest form of sales, however the sales techniques and strategies can be transferred to any industry. "Did you ever think it would be possible that your clients would be asking to purchase your product or service before you showed them the price?" When you learn this you will master the art of selling. Learn the formula and you can write your own pay cheque... TODAY is YOUR day!!

In mid‐December 2013 Jennifer McDonald was diagnosed with breast cancer, an infiltrating lobular carcinoma to be exact. Up until the moment of diagnosis she’d thought she was pretty in tune with her body, but she sure as hell didn’t see this coming. There’s no breast cancer in her family and she has three sisters, two older and one younger, none of whom have been diagnosed with anything more than an easily dispatched colorectal polyp. This prompted her son, 13 at the time, to ask the aunt who looked after him while she was in surgery, “Why did it have to be my mum?”…Why indeed. In a bid to make sense of what was happening to her, Jen started writing a series of blogposts entitled My Big Breast Adventure while undergoing, if you’ll pardon the expression, the ‘pointy‐end’ of treatment throughout 2014 and 2015. With funny and provocative titles like Cut, Poison, Burn…and Laugh, Dying and Other Inconveniences, What the FEC? and The Girl with the Dolphin Tattoo, Jen blogged 32 times over that two year period garnering an avid following and touching many people’s lives. Her oncologist, who’s mentioned many times in various posts, has written the Foreword for the book that this blog has now become. Here’s a sample of what he and others have said: “No patient going through cancer just wants ‘support’. At best, they would like the huge, scary roller-coaster called ‘treatment’ to stop and let them off. At least, they would like to meet someone else on the ride who can give words to the experience - and make some sense of it all. Jen McDonald is that person.” Author Information Jennifer (or Jen to her friends) is a Sydney Australia-based publisher, communication professional and writer. Born and raised in Brisbane she was schooled at Somerville House and attended the Queensland University of Technology, completing a Bachelor of Business Communication majoring in Journalism and Public Relations. For nearly 30 years she has run public relations firm Blackie McDonald with her journalist husband, Tony Blackie, consulting to local and international organisations such as Symantec Corporation, Lindemans Wines, Medtronic, RSM Australia, Telstra, Sprint Corporation, Qantas Airways and SBS. In 2008 she founded Epiphany Communication and launched a blog which, to date, includes posts on My Friend the Headache, a book that’s currently under construction; a travelogue on the Drawn to India art tour of Rajasthan and My Big Breast Adventure, a series of posts on her recent diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer, now available as a book. Jen’s first published work, Vegetarian Vampires and What We Can Learn From Them, also started off as a series of blogposts on Deepak Chopra’s The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. In 2014, Jen founded For Pity Sake a new type of publishing company that’s helping to recast how things are done in that industry by putting writers and readers first.

Have you ever read a self-improvement book and wondered how on earth the sage advice can be put to practical use? If yes, then Vegetarian Vampires and What We Can Learn From Them is the book for you. Each of the laws in Deepak Chopra's The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success is examined in a series of essays by Jennifer McDonald, a run-of-the-mill person, small business owner and working mother. She's certainly no guru but drawing from her own ordinary life experience Jennifer takes these laws out for a spin, and then imparts her sometimes surprising, usually off-centre yet always authentic conclusions.

Have you ever packed your bags for a holiday and wondered whether you’d forgotten anything? Passport, plane ticket, hotel booking... But what if you also had to remember to find out whether you could use the shower in your hotel? Or how many steps you had to climb to get to your room? Or whether you could get on and off the trains in the country you were travelling to? These are only some of the challenges facing a traveller who happens to have mobility issues. When Maureen Corrigan, a former medical doctor and health administrator, developed multiple sclerosis she began to make a series of adaptations in her life in order to be able to continue doing the things she loves – chief among them, travel. With her practical spirit and her inability to take ‘no’ for an answer, Maureen is an inspiration to us all, whether or not we have mobility issues. Her latest adventure, to Norway and the Arctic, provides us with a fascinating insight into how those adaptations play out in real life, as well as taking us on a journey to the starkly stunning vistas of the land of the midnight sun.

Author Information For many years, Dr Maureen Corrigan was a medical practitioner who worked in a broad range of healthcare roles, from general practitioner to CEO. She retired early as a result of developing multiple sclerosis (MS). Maureen is now able to pursue her many other passions, including travel and writing, which has led her to say, ‘I sometimes think getting MS was the best thing that happened to me!’

Sylvia Breamer is a name now almost forgotten in film history, yet once she seemed destined to reach the top of the Hollywood acting profession. In 1918 the American fan magazine Photoplay hailed her " one of the acting finds of the year... Dusky, sensuous, sweet, a facile mirror to all of the voluptuous and most of the tender emotions..." Beautiful, talented and dedicated to her craft, Sylvia starred in films for such distinguished actors as Cecil B. De Mille, Maurice Tourneur, Sidney Franklin and Edwin Carewe. Who was Sylvia?, based on extensive original research, tells for the first time the enthralling life story of one of the first Australian born Hollywoods stars.

Author Information Ralph Marsden is a Melbourne based writer with long professional experience in many aspects of the motion picture and television industries in Australia and overseas. In this book, Prof. Dr. Doeke Post covers the many questions that arise towards the end of life. His purpose is to stimulate a discourse. Giving power of attorney to a trusted person in the spirit of the patient's decisions about the type of medical treatment, but also the termination of life, is an empowering and progressive stride both for health and humanity. Health - or rather, ill health - is a personal choice that requires a critical dialogue between the medical community, family members, religious leaders and of course, one's own concerns - all addressed within a legal framework. The current debate about euthanasia has gone on in the Netherlands for over 70 years and this book provides a clear and balanced guide to the questions surrounding the end of life. Doeke Post also provides suggestions on how to regulate timely power of attorneys. The book is an analysis and vision from fifty years of experience in healthcare practice and policy. Recommended for professionals and lay people who are struggling with end-of-life issues.

To Be Grateful For "What Is" Has Been My Personal Path To Freedom. When we stop to allow and fully accept the reality of this current moment ‐ NOW ‐ a calmness is revealed and available to us. With this diary, we are hoping for you also, to find the inspiration to stop, smell the roses, and take stock of what is truly important, in a world that appears to be turning in an ever increasing pace. Take a moment each day to breathe and ask yourself the following questions... What is it that you are currently grateful for? What is good? What is working and what is valuable? In your daily planner you will notice a space at the beginning of each day to journal these thoughts. You will be amazed at how this very simple practice and commitment will expand for you what is good and what is true! There is an old saying "where your attention goes, Energy flows". It takes just 5 minutes and the positive effects will last a lifetime...Your lifetime. We wish you an abundant and evolutionary year and would love to hear about your experiences and miracles you will inevitably encounter.

Available Now In celebration of Menu Magazine turning 10 years old, publisher Scott Arnold-Eyers marks the milestone by putting together a second recipe book featuring recipes from some of the best cafes, bars, and restaurants that have featured in the magazine during this time. Masters of Menu Recipe Book 2 contains 51 recipes from well-known chefs and venues throughout W.A., as well as a few from families affected by Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis is a disease of the respiratory system but less is known about its effect on the other organs of the body. Whilst most people would recognise a food pyramid with vegetables and grains at the bottom and protein at the top, the pyramid is turned upside down for children with CF. Finding it difficult to absorb the goodness from food, children living with CF require a very high calorie diet and many will take up to 40 enzyme tablets a day to aid with digestion. High calorie meals can also be delicious for anyone wanting to indulge, within moderation of course. “In 2008 my wife gave birth to a beautiful girl named Jade. Shortly after her birth she was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis and since then we have done what we can to help raise money for this cause. The first edition of Masters of Menu was a great success which is why we decided to do it again with new chefs, venues and recipes. All profits from this book once again will be donated to helping those with Cystic Fibrosis”. Scott Arnold-Eyers explains. Masters of Menu Recipe Book

Available Now It took just two weeks for the world to end. Those who survived fled underground to build a new life, while otherworldly clean up crews prowled the surface, looking for stragglers. Over generations, mankind adapted. She kept quiet, kept her animals quiet. She abandoned sound, made talk with her hands. She changed her weapons, her way of killing. She stayed underground like the rabbit, acting like the prey. Noise brought death. The city of Recondite is struggling with a population already too large to sustain. Its Custodian must find a new home for half the denizens. But inside the city itself, people are disappearing. The thing mankind fears most is on the surface.

Author Information Amanda Kool lives in the outer foothills of the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria. She has been writing stories since she was eight years old, starting on her mother’s old typewriter. While her day job as a Technical Writer keeps both her menagerie (two dogs, one cat, and eight chickens) and her mortgage fed, she spends her downtime writing crime, weird, and post-apocalypse fiction. Over the years she has written everything from short fiction, to scripts, to role-playing scenarios, to three solo novels. Amanda also co-authored 1000 Mettle Folds with Australian Horror writer Steve Gerlach and wrote the children’s story, The Paper Fox (illustrated by her brother, Jeremy). The Paper Fox, an interactive story for IOS devices, won critical acclaim for its artwork and design, and garnered the 2014 iKids award for best eBook. Determined, venturesome and strong‐spirited, Doug embarks on a perilous journey to the Western Front. Through confronting horrors of the front line, with his mates, he begins to question the value of life and how a turn of events can quickly tip the balance between life and death. With trepidation, his family back home in Australia anticipates his return, while Doug feels the weight of new challenges, as he is forced to leave the past behind, becoming responsible for those men under his leadership. And the son will rise demonstrates a great truth: that mateship is an anchor to the community of soldiers who share the goal of surviving, and returning home…

A Darker Magic This Way Comes is the first tale in Merlin's Secrets, a series of five books. It is an epic and fast‐paced story of love and war, knights and wizardry, angels and goddesses and the cosmic clash between Darkness and Light. It re‐imagines the Arthurian legend, as narrated by Merlin. But who is this Merlin? Set in the turbulent and brutal times of the fifth and sixth century, Merlin also writes of his love for a fairy from the Otherworld, Emily Charlotte Hughes, a high school student from twenty first century Exeter in Devon. Throughout the hundred years of the Merlin's Secrets series, Emily and Merlin swap the narrator role to give the reader both contemporary and historical insights into the characters and the story. But the young lovers will be separated by their complex destinies and will only have a short amount of time together. The characters are engaging; Emily lives the life of a modern intelligent sixteen year old, yet she falls in love with someone who has a squillion hits on Google, and whom she knows has been dead for fifteen hundred years. Merlin, like an ancient prophet, meditates in caves where he has been known to talk with archangels. He has the ability to become entangled with evil and not be tarnished by it. In A Darker Magic This Way Comes, the young lovers engage with Moloch, the Prince of Lies, and Morgana, a sorceress of immense power, when Emily, whom they call the Chosen One, is abducted. She has to find the answer to why she is "chosen" in this exhilarating mix of adventure, myth, and magic where nothing is as it first seems.

Author Information Carmel Niland, a successful senior bureaucrat in NSW, was for over thirty years an outspoken civil servant involved in leading agencies on women, racial equality, human rights, disability services and child protection. Surprisingly, parallel to her life in the public sector was an inner world deeply rooted within English history and within that her particular interest in the great Arthurian legends. Carmel lives in Sydney, this is her first novel.

The platypus is a remarkable semi‐aquatic mammal found only in Australia. Along with the echidna, it lays eggs like a bird, walks like a reptile and has existed for millions of years. One of the world's strangest looking animals, it is so unusual that when it was first examined by European naturalists they thought it was made up of various animals sewn together ‐ a hoax ‐ with a bill and webbed feet like a duck, a tail like a beaver and venomous spurs. People have always been fascinated by these cute, beguiling little creatures. However, many of their habits remain a mystery as they are largely nocturnal and difficult to spot in the wild. This book will take you on a journey into the bizarre world of t he platypus and echidna ‐ the world's only egg‐laying mammals ‐ and offers clues as to where in Australia you may go to see the se intriguing animals. Written and photographed by Emmy award‐winning wildlife filmmakers, David Parer and Elizabeth Parer‐Cook, this book incorporates up‐to‐date scientific knowledge about the platypus with fresh new photographs of the animal's unique behaviour. Featured are extremely rare images of baby platypus interacting with their mother inside their nest deep underground and mesmerising photographs of pairs courting in the wild.

The astonishing outpouring of rock 'n' roll in the 1960s in Australia and New Zealand gave birth to such iconic bands as the Easybeats, the Masters Apprentices, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, the Purple Hearts, and the Missing Links. It also launched the careers of a generation of musicians who would go on to greater, international fame with their later groups (the Bee Gees, AC/DC, Little River Band, and more. In 'Wild About You', authors Ian D Marks and Iain McIntyre offer profiles of 35 of the most important bands who made the scene. The book is profusely illustrated with many classic images by the great rock photographers of the period (in particular Jim Colbert and Colin Beard, who were heavily involved in this project, as well as photos and ads from Go‐ Set and Everybody's, rare posters and more from the bands' personal collections. It also includes the authors' Top 100 Beat and Garage Songs and a detailed discography, as well as an introduction by Ian McFarlane. 'Wild About You' is destined to be the definitive work on this crucial period in music, and compulsory reading for Sixties obsessives and garage‐band enthusiasts everywhere.

This is the story of an extraordinary job, in an extraordinary place. As one of the rangers, Michael Anderson was there to eradicate the cats and control the rabbits. Feral cats, European rabbits, black rats and house mice were introduced to Macquarie Island back in the sealing days. Sub‐Antarctic Macquarie Island is a thin sliver of land cast adrift amidst the world's greatest ocean, 1500 kilometres south east of Hobart, Tasmania. The plateau that stretches most of the length of the island slopes steeply to narrow coastal terraces and storm‐lashed, rocky shores. The climate is vicious: an average 280 days of strong wind a year, 90 days at gale force. On most days some form of precipitation falls, whether rain, drizzle, hail or snow. In summer the island is home to around four million penguins and tens of thousands of seals, as well as albatrosses and several species of burrow‐nesting seabirds. This book is both the personal response of a ranger working to eliminate feral cats in a most challenging environment, and a philosophical probing into this "feral dilemma". The book immerses the reader in a world of sub-zero temperatures, gales, stink and struggle contrasted with the glory of an aurora or the majesty of an albatross. The narrative is immediate, raw and colourful, yet sometimes also lyrical. It is a marriage of science and poetry, told by a man who has fallen in love with a wild island. - Janet Fenton, author of Win & Clyde

Dog Ear Cafe is a true-life adventure story about how one Aboriginal community beat the odds and defeated petrol sniffing. It tells of the Mt Theo Petrol Sniffing Program: a story of culture clash, of two lines of fire that meet in the desert night, of partnerships that cross Australia's racial divide. Woven throughout are humour, taboos, bush mechanics, hope and tragedy. In a colloquial and narrative manner, this book invites the reader to a deeper analysis of the assumptions behind white and black economics, indigenous alcoholism, welfare dependency and the failure of well intended policy and programs. Hidden in the subtext is a mud map for reproducing successful partnerships with indigenous Australians.

These are true stories of 12 brave women who sailed to the colonies in Australia's founding years. These tales of women triumphing over adversity document the early decades of a nation and are told with great panache by Susanna de Vries who has inherited the Irish gift for storytelling. Letters and portraits help bring these women to life and describe the dangers and deprivations of pioneering. Every Australian should know these women's stories and be proud of them.

The Mt Theo Program was founded in 1994, when half the teenage population of Yuendumu were sniffing. Eight years later no one sniffed, and ex-sniffers had become youth leaders and community workers. The elders of Mt Theo used their traditional bush knowledge to turn lives around.

In October 1980, struggling with small waves on the fledgling pro tour, Simon Anderson stuck three fins on a surfboard and changed surfing forever. Now, for the first time, on the 30th Anniversary of his historic breakthrough, Simon tells the entire remarkable story of how a kid from Collaroy graduated to Narrabeen and then took on the surfing world. Three decades after he took a dilemma to inspire a revolutionary solution, Simon is in high demand as a shaper to the world's best surfers and continues to influence the course of surfing history. From longboards to short, singles to twins to thrusters, Aussie titles to the pro tour, Simon's story mirrors the progression of modern surfing. With tales from surfing legends such as; Phil Jarratt, Derek Hynd, Andrew Kidman, Hugh McLeod, and Terry Fitzgerald along with photos by Hugh McLeod, Peter Crawford, Frank Pithers, Jeff Divine, Peter Simons, Mick McCormack, Dan Merkel

The story of Bells Beach is much more than a powerful narrative about the world's longest running board riding event, a contest that began as a rally half a century ago and became the Rip Curl Pro. It is the story of a collection of fearless pioneers who discovered this iconic bigwave beach and made it their own. It is the story of Australian surfing, from its amateur roots, through the rebellious 1960s and the country soul era of the early 1970s to the professionalism of today. It is the story of how a tiny cottage industry became a global empire. Most of all, it is the stories of the people who surf at Bells, especially those who make the annual Easter pilgrimage and compete for the most coveted trophy on the world tour.

Will Squirt ever understand Dad’s funny way of speaking? In his quest to do so, Squirt may just discover the most powerful language of all — that of the heart. Join a boy and his slang‐slinging dad in this fun, rhyming journey through some of Australia’s most popular idioms. — best taken with a grain of salt!

Author Information Josette was raised on a farm in Gunnedah, NSW, where she kept company with dogs, cows, and her five older siblings — not necessarily in that order. Owing to this earthy upbringing, she quickly became fluent in two languages: English and ‘Australian’.

260

It wasn’t until much later, when Josette grew up to become an English language teacher, that she began to contemplate just how tricky all our slang words and idioms can be for those learning English, including young Aussie kids! Cue lightbulb moment: why not create a rhyming picture book that deals with just that! Everything but the Kitchen Sink materialised. Aside from Australia, Josette has taught in the UK and France. Word games and punning around make her very happy. These days she lives both in Newcastle and the hope that she will one day beat her brother at a game of Scrabble.

She has a Masters in Special Education and a Bachelor of Primary Education from the University of Sydney. Later this year Nicole will be running a Crowdfunding Campaign on Kickstarter to raise awareness of and pre-sell her first picture book, Tom Brown, Sit Down.

Illustrator Information Olivia recently completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School. Her style is influenced by the impressionist art movement as well as illustrators Beatrix Potter, A.A. Milne and Ludwig Bemelmans. She is a perpetual daydreamer with a nostalgic love for the past. Marilla and Jerry are two merfolk who live in the waters of Port Stephens, where they have many friends in the sea and on the shores. Years ago, when she was very small, Marilla’s parents disappeared. Now she only has her grandmother to care for her. On a trip with her dolphin friends up the east coast of Australia, Marilla learns of the mystery of Esmeralda Cove. Convinced it involves the fate of her lost family, she is determined to solve it. Marilla and Jerry embark on a dangerous adventure.

Author Information Eugenie Lumbers spent many years sailing up and down the East Coast of Australia, with holidays in Broken Bay and in Port Stephens, NSW. One of her favourite places for anchoring, swimming and diving off the boat is Fame Cove. Summers just seemed to be so full of sun and sea. Obviously these waters just have to be the home of the merfolk, Marilla, Jerry and their families. Offshore is filled with islands and adventures. The freedom of the sea, the dolphins that play around the bow of a sailing yacht, slapping their tails as you leave their territory, all encouraged Eugenie to write this story. Eugenie trained in medicine and is a medical scientist so her love of science has intermingled with her love of the sea. She is married with three children and five grand children and lives in the bush near Wingham in NSW.

Andrew is leaving behind his childhood on the big and dusty outback property in western NSW, as he and his family move inland to a more settled hills area of the Warrumbungle Mountains. There is the strange and lonely man next door – a recluse around whom much gossip grows; there are everyday farm chores and school work to be done, and a steady trickle of visitors coming to spend time with the family. The biggest misadventure of all is wrought by nature itself as Andrew becomes lost in the rugged back country, amid a destructive bush fire. A charming children’s novel about a boy on the cusp of growing up, leaving his isolated childhood behind him, and finding his place in the wider community.

Author Information Madeleine Simmons enjoys life on the family farm, where she lives with her husband and family. They live a stone’s throw from the village of Nevertire, a name the family aspires to live up to. Life on the farm is fulfilling and busy, with every day full of adventure and challenge. Madeleine has enjoyed a lifetime of reading and telling stories. Raised on Beatrix Potter and Enid Blyton, she began writing in her childhood. Homemade editions of magazines and books were the norm on every rainy day, providing hours of fun for her eager younger siblings. Madeleine loves practicing, teaching and living yoga. Headstands, reading, and writing are her passions – she is still perfecting doing these simultaneously.

The Harriet Clare series is unique in newly independent children’s fiction. In the sixth instalment of this popular series, Christmas Fair, join Harriet as she spends the holiday season with all her besties! Here’s a little taste from your friend Harriet: OH. MY. GOSH. I love Christmastime sooo, sooo much! I wish it was Christmas Eve right this very minute! NO! NO! NO! NO! Actually, I don't wish this. Oh, well, maybe I do. No, I don’t! OH! I might. ARRRRGH! The thing is, I want Christmas Eve to come but I don’t want it to be over! So, I want it but I don’t want it! Do you ever feel like that? I do all the time for everything that’s worth looking forward to—birthdays, sleepovers, decorating the Christmas tree even! Ours looks so pretty in the front window of the lounge room tonight, though. ECLARE and I decorated it last night and now it’s all over. SEE what I mean!

An Australian classic. Twelve cross-eyed emus, Eleven limping lizards, Ten noisy numbats, Nine fat koalas, Eight frill-necked lizards, Seven wobbly wombats, Six cackling cockies, Five pink galahs, Four kangaroos, Three magpies, Two lyrebirds, and a kookaburra in a gum tree.

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me... a seahorse on a sea star." Be enchanted by Kim Michelle Toft's lyrical adaptation of a Christmas carol classic. Combined with her stunning hand-painted silk illustrations of marine life, this book captures the magic of both Christmas and the underwater world. The book builds to a spectacular 'fold-out' finish. Features: - Brightly coloured silk illustrations. - Song building to a spectacular fold down ending. - Additional environmental information about each sea creature in the back of the book. - Bonus Christmas poster for the wall and a CD. - 3-track CD featuring the soulful voice of Lisa Hunt.

This hilarious, original and thoroughly modern tale of Santa Claus will delight both children and adults. Already a bestseller in France, the book tells the story of Santa, who finds he has forgotten to clean his suit ahead of his Christmas delivery round - and finds the washing machine is broken! His dog Bobo (a canny canine who reminds us of Wallace's resourceful companion, Gromit) comes to the rescue. Armed with notes from a sewing program he's seen on TV, he starts making a new suit - out of the curtains! Will the suit be ready in time for Christmas? Will Santa learn his lesson and fix the washing machine in time for next Christmas? Young readers will have lots of fun finding out, in this playful comic-style book that is easy to read and packs a delightful punchline.
