DECEMBER 2017
December 2017 Best to let you know that this is not the last new title order form for the year; whilst this order form has between 60 – 80 new Australian authored books the out pouring continues and there will be another December New title release order form after this (probably called December 2) and due 3 weeks after this December order form. I have just finished reading Balga Boy Jackson the novel by Mudrooroo. What a work! It is a sort of memoir spanning his time as a boy living with his mother and sister in Western Australia, then to Clontarf (for wayward youth) and onto Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. It is a heart-warming story of a man born in 1938 and his life evolving around his passing off of his heritage and grooming to be a “lad”. Starting as a Bodgie with his Widgie girl and onto the morays of Carlton and the move to a duffle coat. I really enjoyed the story which winds around some great history especially around Melbourne and those early Melbourne musicians like The Yarra Yarra Jazz Band (I knew them as the Roger Janes band in later life), Judy Jacques and Balga’s own relationship with Music and the 50’s and 60’s. His association with Fitzroy Street, St Kilda and attempted life as a pimp and so on. I really hope it can get the shortlist, bookseller and consumer respect it is capable of. I have not seen the final jacket but have requested the back jacket has a rich image of Mudrooroo as a young man. Please ask for reading copies. Probably better to use some of the words of the publisher Tom Thompson – 'a boy born long ago in 1938 who was named Balga or Black Boy. He had an Aboriginal mother and an African-American father who bequeathed to him the spiky mop of hair which gave him his name. So it is said. Now read on. Balga Boy Jackson is the long awaited new novel of Mudrooroo. He returns to his roots to give us a vivid life story of an Australian Black Boy - naturally with a pun, Balga is the Australian grass tree called in Western Australia, the Black Boy. Mudrooroo, who hails from Cuballing in the west, takes us on Balga Boy’s journey to Fitzroy and Kings Cross. The late fifties and early sixties comes alive through Balga’s own Blues and musical journey with Revel Cooper, and he says: “This is how It was, for a lot of us.” ' Last month I had the pleasure of renewing my visits to Powell’s in Portland Oregon. Whatever you do in life you have to look at this iconic location to see how our industry thrives. The outside of the store is somewhat low key and understates the massive emporium behind the façade. Through the front door and wow – consumers buying,
consumers enjoying book shop visits as a recreational activity. The building looks like it is spread over maybe 3 levels and those levels split again. The number of people in the store was likely to be between 500 and 600. Difficult to put a number on it, it resembled the passenger numbers off two airliners. Naturally I bought some wares from them including a second hand book about Early Australian explorers. And now on reflection I can’t say Powell’s was in any danger from emerging business, the switch to online, just plain old numbers of individual titles. Hard to calculate but perhaps 300,000 titles? (Could be more). Then why is this store such an icon in this day? It is a city central location down the renewing part of town. The population of Portland is in fact less than Melbourne. It is not part of a Mall. I confess I don’t know – maybe Portland seems not to be as multi-cultural as our capital cities – whatever it is I approve. http://www.newgeography.com/content/003856-theevolving-urban-form-portland Books. The book that has caught our sales line attention over the last few months is “Hey Warrior” both in hardback and paperback. Some of the sales analysis is confusing. Of the thousands we have sold the predominance of sales is via online vendors 80% and the preferred binding is hardback. I also need to pass comment on the book in this list Trapped in a Closed World - Catholic Culture and Sexual Abuse by Kevin Peoples. As part of the metadata there is the following: As at 1 September 2017, and in advance of publication, Trapped in a Closed World: Catholic Culture and Sexual Abuse, has officially been withdrawn from sale in Victoria, Australia due to current court proceedings. We will naturally adhere to this. The publisher has had two legals done and that is the ruling. How are we feeling about trade? Great. Lots of books, plenty of media, plenty of consumers who can locate books so easily. The only complex side is that we are a part of the supply eco-system and that is where we have to assert that we will put as much money into making this as great a Christmas as we can. We will make the switch to Star Track at the end of October. Good fortune in health and reading. DJ

... a boy born long ago in 1938 who was named Balga or Black Boy. He had an Aboriginal mother and an African‐ American father who bequeathed to him the spiky mop of hair which gave him his name. So it is said. Now read on. Balga Boy Jackson is the long awaited new novel of Mudrooroo. He returns to his roots to give us a vivid life story of an Australian Black Boy ‐ naturally with a pun, Balga is the Australian grass tree called in Western Australia the Black Boy. Mudrooroo, who hails from Cuballing in the West, takes us on Balga Boy's journey to Fitzroy and Kings Cross. The late fifties and early sixties comes alive through Balga's own Blues and musical journey, and he says: "This is how It was, for a lot of us." Old readers of Mudrooroo who enjoyed Wild Cat Falling, Dr. Woodreddy and the Master of the Ghost Dreaming series, will enjoy this book and new readers will begin to understand Australia from a black and blues perspective. Author Information Born Colin Johnson at Cuballing in Western Australia in 1938, Mudrooroo left Perth for Melbourne in the 1950s. He studied at night while working in the Motor Registration Office and State Library. He wrote Wild Cat Falling (1965), which was welcomed as the first novel by an Aboriginal writer, then left Australia to travel in Asia, where he studied Buddhism and became a Buddhist monk. Returning to Melbourne in 1976, he worked at the Aboriginal Research Centre at Monash University, studied at Melbourne University and taught at Koorie College. He has more recently been a lecturer on indigenous/black Australian writing at Murdoch University and the University of Queensland. His groundbreaking study of Aboriginal literature, Writing from the Fringe (1991) was shortlisted for the WA Premier’s Award and the Stanner Award in 1992. He formally changed his name from Colin Johnson to Mudrooroo in 1988. Mudrooroo is the author of over a dozen literary works, including the novel Doctor Wooreddy’s Prescription for Enduring the Ending of the World (1983), which has been published around the world and is now regarded as a modern Australian classic. His poetry collection The Garden of Gethsemane, was double winner of the WA Premier’s Award in 1992 and was also shortlisted for the Victorian Premier’s Awards. Disclaimer As at 1 September 2017, and in advance of publication, Trapped in a Closed World: Catholic Culture and Sexual Abuse, has officially been withdrawn from sale in Victoria, Australia due to current court proceedings. A lived expose of the poisonous clerical culture dominating life in a typical Catholic seminary in Australia in the 1960s, which links this culture to the clerical abuse highlighted in the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. The God Kevin Peoples met as a seminarian was not the God he knew and loved and wanted to serve. Trapped in a Closed World is his first‐hand account of the harmful clerical culture that dominated Catholic seminary life in Australia in the 1960s ‐ an endemic culture that still exists in some seminaries today. The Catholic beliefs taught date back to medieval times, and have made the Church hierarchical, misogynistic, and exclusive. For the young men training to be Catholic priests, this meant being 'special', being 'chosen' directly by God to serve the institution of the Holy Mother Church. Told with the tenderness and humour of a memoir, it nonetheless rigorously investigates the extreme beliefs and practices that paved the way for many Catholic priests to sexually abuse those in their care, and for the bishops to protect their clergy before victims. Ignorant and innocent at the time of the sexual abuse affecting the community outside the closed gates of St. Columba's, Springwood and his home Diocese, Ballarat, Victoria, Kevin makes up for lost time with this tour de force.
Author Information Kevin Peoples lives in Melbourne. He is a retired Technical and Further Education Teacher (TAFE) and has a Master of Arts Degree in Australian History from the University of Melbourne. As a late vocation to the Catholic priesthood, he returned to complete his secondary education at Chevalier College, Bowral, NSW in 1962. He entered St. Columba’s Seminary, Springwood in 1964 and left in 1966.

Wild Colonial Boys is the 'bible' on Cold Chisel! The first edition of Wild Colonial Boys, published in 2012 was used as a resource by both Cold Chisel and their management (who dubbed it 'the bible'). The first edition has been out of print for over two years, and with the launch of Jimmy Barnes' new autobiography, and five more years of Chisel activity, it is time to release the totally revised and updated second edition. With new, never before published photos covering their entire career, updates to all chapters from 1975, an extensive new chapter detailing Chisel's career post 2012, this is a must have book for all Cold Chisel fans! This is the most extensive book published on an Australian band. Drum Media's Mike Smith described the book thus: "...text enhanced considerably by interviews with the various members he's undertaken as well as with various managers and former managers, radio DJs and so on. Lawrence has also been given access to the band's business records and diaries. His obvious obsessive attention to detail ensures readers get everything they could possibly want to know, from the back stories to songs recorded and otherwise to set lists from obscure gigs to European and US shows."
Author Information Michael Lawrence, an English/Music teacher by profession, first saw Cold Chisel play as an underage punter in 1979 and kept a close record of their achievements ever since. In the mid‐1990s he started documenting his collection of recordings and reviews and Melbourne DJ Billy Pinnell put him in contact with the band’s manager Rod Willis. Willis was impressed and gave Michael unprecedented access to his business records, diaries, band members and dozens of associated employees, family, producers and record company. The first biography on Cold Chisel, written by Michael, Showtime, was released in 1998 and his passion for Chisel has continued, resulting in the first edition of this book in 2012 and now this totally revised and updated 2017 edition. In the shadows of cosmopolitan Adelaide an unborn baby is sold, this tiny child's sheer will to live is tested by the pain and suffering she is forced to endure. Through the years, life is only bearable because of her ability to play the piano, which she excels at. Her love of music transports her from the oppression and cruelty inflicted by those who vowed to take care of her. Eventually she runs away just to survive, she doesn't only survive though this is more than survival it is a victory of the human spirit. Her life is interspersed with sadness and brutality, but also great joy and a love that knows no bounds. This story will leave you breathless, a woman's fight for survival in her world of abuse, rape and murder. Hope is instilled by the courage of one human being who triumphs over evil and refuses to be beaten. Her ability to never give up and the strength to forge ahead to bring recognition for the suffering of those she loves. A heart‐stopping story of warmth and wisdom. You won't regret picking up this book. You may not be able to put it down ‐ Caroline Overington: The Australian.

Martin Sharp was an integral part of international Pop Art in the 1960s, magnified through his covers for OZ magazine in Sydney and London, his covers for Cream, and posters of Dylan, Hendrix and Donovan. His efforts at making The Yellow House and Luna Park cultural precincts, were aided by his screen prints and exhibitions to flaunt the work of others, especially the singer Tiny Tim. In this second of two volumes, Lowell Tarling offers us a way into the enigmatic and reclusive artist, through his extensive interviews with Sharp and all of his trusted friends, touching on the many dramas of life at Sharp's home studio, Wirian; his productions and search for meaning with regard to the Luna Park Fire; his spiritual search and death in 2013. 'I think what Lowell has done here is admirable, removing himself from the narrative. This book will be of interest to a wider audience who don't even know who Martin is. I predict this book will become a genuine hit.' ‐ Peter Kingston.

Enormous gold mines, original miners' huts of the 1850s, heritage gardens, unique wineries, wildlife parks, museums, art galleries and markets all showcase the charm and diversity on offer in the Goldfields region. A large section of central Victoria including Macedon, Ballarat, Bendigo, Castlemaine, Daylesford and Seymour is covered in this beautifully presented book which is the latest in the 'Portraits of Victoria ' series. Sovereign Hill, a goldfield's town in Ballarat, captures the excitement of life in the 1850s, and attracts around 450,000 visitors every year. Bendigo is home to the Central Deborah Gold Mine and includes Australia's oldest working pottery, which was established in 1858. The spa towns of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs offer mineral springs and relaxing getaways. Mount Macedon is renowned for its heritage listed gardens. The cooler climate attracted Melbourne's elite during the 1870s. Summer retreats and ornamental gardens were established. The discovery of gold near Ballarat in 1851 caused the Victorian gold rush and changed Australia forever. Discoveries at the Mount Alexander goldfields added to the rush. Prior to 1851, Australia was little more than a convict outpost for the British Empire, but the dream of striking it rich enticed hundreds of thousands of people from around the world to travel to Melbourne. The elaborate, grand buildings of Ballarat and Bendigo are testament to the affluence of the gold boom. Castlemaine

Available Now I really look forward to going out for breakfast and I can't think of anything more enticing to the palate than a hearty bacon and eggs breakfast. In my opinion, there's no meal as good as a plate of crispy bacon, perfectly poached eggs, hot toast with real butter with a side of garlic mushrooms and sauteed spinach ‐ absolute heaven! Bacon and Eggs to many people around the world is what pasta is to Italians, bagels to the New Yorkers, haggis to the Scottish and sashimi to the Japanese. Almost like a culture in itself. This book contains recipes using both eggs and pork, and other porcine bi‐products, such as ham, prosciutto, sausages, and of course the star attraction ‐ bacon. Many recipes are traditional, although I have prepared them in my own special way, with little tweaks and personal touches, which I believe are creatively unique and deliciously irresistible. There are no rules to adhere to regarding the lists of ingredients I have provided ‐ you can create your own versions of my adaptations and most recipes provide various alternatives for non‐meat eaters. Both individually and combined, bacon and eggs are incredibly versatile. In this book, I will show you how to create fabulous recipes that can be eaten any time of the day. Don't be fooled by the title ‐ this book is not just about breakfast. There are hundreds of possible combinations to create fabulous meals using any of the featured ingredients. Here are just a few.

Memoir at its best, these yarns capture what it was like to live in suburbs like Footscray, Seddon, Yarraville, Sunshine, Altona and many others in the 1950s, `60s and `70s. The 39 contributors include people from all walks of life including: Josephine Cafagna, Lina Caneva, Mark Ferrie, Kevin Harrington, Tony Leonard, Michael Leunig, Wendy Stapleton, Teddy Whitten Junior, Pat Wilson and many more, with a foreword by Rob Sitch. This volume chronicles aerial warfare in the South Pacific from December 1941 until March 1942, during which air operations by both sides became a daily occurrence. As Imperial Japanese Navy flying boats and landbased bombers penetrated over vast distances, a few under‐strength squadrons of the Royal Australian Air Force put up a spirited fight. However it was the supreme power of aircraft carriers that had the biggest impact. Four Japanese fleet carriers facilitated the capture of Rabaul over a devastating four‐day period in January 1942. The following month, the USS Lexington's fighter squadron VF‐3 scored one of the most one‐sided victories of the entire Pacific War. By March 1942 the Japanese had landed on mainland New Guinea, and the scene was set for a race to control Port Moresby. This is the full story of both sides of an air war that could have been won by either incumbent, but for timing, crucial decisions and luck. The two authors are uniquely qualified to tell this story. Raised in Port Moresby, Michael Claringbould is a globally‐ acknowledged expert on the New Guinea air war and Japanese aviation in particular. Peter Ingman is an acclaimed military history author specialising in the early Pacific War period.

Since 2005, the resources sector has attracted a significant amount of attention. Mining's complex marketplace has given the industry a "buy high/sell low" reputation. Until now, there has been no guide to making deals that covers both opportunity and risk management. With over 27 years of experience in valuations and risk, Richard Stewart provides an invaluable analysis of a volatile market. Hitting Pay Dirt is an essential guide to making better mining deals. This book will provide investors, board members and senior managers with key insights into: strategic issues for the resources industry; the economics of commodity prices; the political, geological, engineering, legal and financial considerations of mine management; building pricing discipline into mining transactions through an understanding of different valuation techniques; and developing transaction plans that can take advantage of cyclical transitions.

the Lovers by renowned French‐Australian writer Catherine Rey is an arresting tale, a mystery with a low burn tension, which revolves around the disappearance of Lucie Bruyere. The novel unveils the truth about her charismatic yet subtly controlling partner, the world‐famous artist Ernest Renfield. The suspenseful story, both police investigation and multi‐voiced Rashomon, ends in a dramatic and powerful illumination. The book cover was designed by artist and designer Phil Day, using a painting by Rob Machaffie, and will feature a promotional blurb by writer Michelle de Krester. Author Information Catherine Rey was born in the town of Saintes, in South West France, and studied and taught French literature in Bordeaux until she left France for Australia, in 1997. Her first book L’ami intime was published in 1994 by the iconic French publisher Le temps qu’il fait. It received a laudatory review in Le Monde. L’ami intime was followed by Les jours heureux (1995), Eloge de l’oubli (1996) and Lucy comme les chiens (2001). In a departure from her ‘intimist’ style, Rey published in 2003 Ce que racontait Jones, the baroque tale of a tormented circus family set in the Australian outback. It was shortlisted for the Renaudot and Femina prizes and later published in Australia in a translation by Andrew Reimer as The Spruiker’s Tale (2007). In her fictionalised autobiography Une femme en marche (2007), Rey anatomises her consuming need to write and her troubled relationship with her mother. Le Monde described it as an uncommon cry of rage and freedom. It was translated by Julie Rose and published in Australia as Stepping Out. In another dramatic change of style Rey published Les extraordinaires aventures de John Lofty Oakes in 2010. The philosophical tale charts the heroic travels and spiritual revelations of the Tom Thumb-like boy nicknamed Lijo. Rey takes the reader on a fantastic journey, in the tradition of Voltaire, Jonathan Swift and Lewis Carroll. In 2011, Rey returned to Le temps qu’il fait to publish the poignant meditation on death Plus calme que le sommeil (2011). The Lovers is Rey’s first novel written in English. First published twenty years ago by Picador, Peter Blazey's audacious, irresistible autobiography Screw Loose will be available in a revised edition with a foreword by the Honourable Michael Kirby. Candid and at times provocative, these self‐styled "uncalled‐for memoirs" encompass five decades in the life of a controversial Australian journalist, biographer and gay activist. Blazey always found himself in the hub of political and cultural times. Press Secretary to the Environment Minister in the Whitlam Government, he moved on to London, a witness to punk while living in a Trot squat and street fighting the National Front. In Sydney he was party to the riot that became the first Gay Mardi Gras parade. Blazey frequented Studio 54 in its heyday; became a millionaire wastrel in Barbra Stanwyck's former Hollywood mansion and, in his final years, an inflammatory columnist and troublesome AIDS activist. Blazey was close to the mark when tagging himself "a belligerent old bugger", though in the end, his larrikin spirit was tempered by more poignant insights. Screw Loose is a unique account of a remarkable life that remains as vivid, incisive and raucously entertaining as when it first appeared in 1997. Screw Loose sold over 5,000 copies when it came out. The cover was designed by Phil Day and will feature blurbs by journalist and writer David Marr and writer Frank Moorhouse. "However angry people were with Blazey, he left everyone feeling a little shamefaced in the end, like poor sticks-inthe-mud in the presence of this free spirit." David Marr. "For me Peter exemplified bravado. Bravado in the face of the inexplicable, in the face of angst and in the face of the petty and not so petty injustices of the world." Frank Moorhouse.

Say it's not so, but detective squads still put their faith in the whiteboard and texta, brainstorming difficult cases. Like this: 1. Hildvi dies. Accident, suicide, murder? 2. Wayne, distraught. 3. Josh, Ange, impeccable alibis. 4. Mrs Ellicott swears she heard a scream. 5. Kurt Cowboy ‐ mysterious, dangerous, no known ID. 6. Operation Centipede ‐ Brisbane, "colourful identity" Marko Kaljurand. 7. Fishscale, Charlie, Blow, Wogan = best quality cocaine. 8. Uluru... Sorry, wrong whiteboard? No. Correct whiteboard. Add Alice Springs. Seeking answers to myriad tricky questions, Detective Inspector Franz Heineken, aka Pufferfish, aka long‐time Aussie blow‐in, knows where he must go ‐ to the two Australian places he never wanted to investigate, let alone re‐visit: the fabled Red Centre, and his ethically questionable past. 13-Point Plan for a Perfect Murder

They know what's going to happen to you... after you die. Scientists in Iceland think they've figured out one of our greatest mysteries ‐ where the electrical energy in our brains goes after we die. According to the laws of physics, one form of energy must always become another form. So the electrical energy in our brains and nervous system can't simply disappear... When ex‐lawyer Becky Dales travels to Iceland to track down her missing brother, she doesn't care about the groundbreaking discoveries, or the positive‐thinking practiced by the Icelanders ‐ she just wants her brother back. Having stumbled on something she thinks the Icelandic government wants covered up, Becky must piece together the answers fast... before she becomes a victim herself. Author Information Zena Shapter writes from a castle in a flying city hidden by a thunder-cloud. She’s the winner of a dozen national writing competitions including a Ditmar Award, the Glen Miles Short Story Prize and the Australian Horror Writers’ Association Award for Short Fiction. Her stories have appeared in collections such as the Hugo-nominated ‘Sci Phi Journal’, ‘Midnight Echo’ (as well as their ‘best of’ anthology), ‘Award-Winning Australian Writing’ (twice), and ‘Antipodean SF’. Reviewer for Tangent Online Lillian Csernica has referred to her as a writer who “deserves your attention”. In 2016 her co-authored science fiction novel ‘Into Tordon’ for 8-14 year olds was published by MidnightSun Publishing and distributed into school libraries by Scholastic under the pseudonym Z.F. Kingbolt. She’s also the founder and leader of Sydney’s awardwinning Northern Beaches Writers’ Group, with whom she’s written several speculative adventure books for young readers to raise money for The Kids’ Cancer Project. When not writing, Zena is a writing mentor, editor, tutor, competition judge, book creator, and workshop presenter. She enjoys travelling, wine, movies, chocolate, frogs and connecting with fellow story nerds online.

There are many grief holes. There's the grief hole you fall into when a loved one dies. There's another grief hole in all of us; small or large, it determines how much we want to live. And there are the places, the physical grief holes, which attract suicides to their centre. Sol Evictus, a powerful, charismatic singer, sends a young artist into The Grief Hole to capture the faces of the teenagers dying there. When she inevitably dies herself, her cousin Theresa resolves to stop this man so many love. Theresa sees ghosts; she knows how you'll die by the spirits haunting you. If you'll drown, she'll see drowned people. Most often she sees battered women, because she works to find emergency housing for abused women. She sees no ghosts around Sol Evictus but she doesn't let that stop her. Her passion to help, to be a saint, drives her to find a way to destroy him.

In a world where membership in one of the four magic guilds guarantees respect and wealth, it is strange that Lucinda Guillierre is terrified of being exposed as a witch. The Fire Warlock finds her attitude puzzling, but does not give her his full attention until a long‐buried secret comes to light. She has good reasons to be afraid. As war looms and dangerous romance beckons, who will have the best chance to kill her? Her enemies, her friends, or Lucinda herself? Author Information Barbara Howe lives on the third rock from the sun, but her imagination travels the universe and beyond. Born in the US (North Carolina), she spent most of her adult life in New Jersey, working in the software industry, on projects ranging from low-level kernel ports to multi-million-dollar financial applications. She moved to New Zealand in 2009, gained dual citizenship, and now works as a software developer in the movie industry. She lives in Wellington, in a house overflowing with books and jigsaw puzzles, and wishes she had more time time to spend universe hopping. Frustrated from back-to-back readings of several novels filled with bad writing and appalling portrayals of intelligent women, she thought she could do better, and wrote down the critical scenes from one of the movies playing in her daydreams. Her husband and daughter loved them, and demanded more. Those scenes grew into her first novel, The Locksmith, and now undammed, the ink keeps flowing.

A host of Australia's best genre fictioneers ‐ and one bold Kiwi ‐ were invited to submit stories to the first anthology of adventure stories commissioned by Clan Destine Press. The authors could write in any genre but there a couple of must‐haves: the stories had to feature 'a dynamic duo' and include something Australian (or Kiwi). Thirty‐one authors did exactly what we asked of them, in terms of page‐turning yarns; and many also took advantage of the offer to write from 5000 to 15,000 words. And Then... The Great Big Book of Awesome Adventure Tales is the result. Or, to be precise, the two‐volume And Then... is the result ‐ and is now available. The two Great Big Books of Awesome Adventure Tales feature historical, futuristic and contemporary settings, and the adventures are real‐ world, far‐out, sf, horror, fantasy and mystery. The Authors Sulari Gentill, Jason Nahrung, Alan Baxter, Jason Franks, Lucy Sussex, Amanda Wrangles, Evelyn Tsitsas, Peter M Ball, Narrelle M Harris, Dan Rabarts, Kat Clay, Sophie Masson, Tor Roxburgh, Emilie Collyer, and Tansy Rayner Roberts. Good old-fashioned rip-snorting action adventures of the What If... What Next... and - most importantly - And Then... Kind.

The word "amazon" generally conjures up images of wild and powerful warrior women, fighting off foes in some primitive matriarchal society where they rule over men who have been subverted to more menial roles. Outback Women's Stories is a compilation of significant Australian women of simple but important character traits ‐ strength, fortitude and courage. Australia has grown from penal colony to modern nation and important player on the global stage, and during this period there have been any number of women who have courageously taken on the multifarious and sometimes death‐defying challenges the Aussie outback has thrown at them, often alongside the men they loved with gaggles of children in tow. These women have faced their trials admirably, with rarely a word of complaint, and continue to do so to this day ‐ they are our "Aussie Amazons".

From This Place explores the inspirations and work of fourteen unique women artists and how the natural beauty of the Upper Yarra Valley grounds their practice. It is a collaboration between writer, Lindy Schneider, and photographer, Angela Rivas. With thoughtful prose and insightful images, this book is a touching immersion in the challenges and delights of giving in to the beating heART that lives in us all, regardless of age, medium or history. Be inspired to explore the artist in your own life. The force of creativity in these women is a force in us all and every story has the potential to reignite a forgotten part of your own creative life.
Lindy and Angela started this project more than two years ago in a moment of shared inspiration. They were curious why they lived among so many talented women artists and wanted to find out why. They also wanted to elevate fellow women artists, to raise their profiles in a world where it is often hard to cut through. One of the most telling statistics they found was that only 5% of artists hanging in permanent galleries worldwide were women. They decided to do something about it, and where better to start than in our own beautiful region?

Angelo Astone has just been recruited to the Tassie Devils in the National Australian Rules Football Competition (NARC). He is an 18‐year‐old boy from country Victoria. Todd Thomson is the star of the competition, captain of the Tassie Devils who has been recruited from Western Australia to help lift the team. There is only one problem ‐Thomson has a serious drug problem and can't control it. Not only that but he is coercing other players, especially new recruits, to sell drugs for him as he grows his drug empire. The Tassie Devils are struggling. In debt to the tune of $30 million, they haven't played finals in five years and revenue in all areas is falling. The club's chairman, Geoffrey Bush, a successful businessman, thinks the CEO Simon Cunnington is strange and incompetent and the only way out of the debt is to float the club on the stockmarket. Problem is that two of his board members, Wang Li and Rahul Patel, from China and India respectively, not only want to buy the club outright but also want to host a NARC in their home country and will do anything to get that opportunity. As the season unfolds drama after drama encapsulates the club with Thomson's behaviour growing more reckless and young Angelo falling in love for the first time. Thomson's network of drug suppliers grows causing mayhem in and out of the club who are more than willing to turn a blind eye in the quest for a premiership. What are the consequences? And what price will the club play? One Season depicts one topsy turvy ride of a professional sporting club who think the only boundaries that exist are the ones marking the oval. Behind the Goals is a history of the Victorian Country Football League, the body that ran country football in the game's heartland for 90 years. It explores the reasons the body was formed and its success in administering the game in town and country in the boom years of the 1950s through to the corporate era in the 1980s. It traces the VCFL's transformation from an almost entirely voluntary organisation to a body with many salaried workers in the managerial age of the 2000s. It features larger personalities with bold visions and quiet achievers who made sure the books were right. In tracing the story of country football, it offers sweeping insights on the story of football through Australia.
Author Information Paul Daffey is a Melbourne journalist and author. He has written two books on country football, Local Rites and Beyond the Big Sticks, and he has co‐written several books on a range of football topics. He has written about country football in newspapers and spoken about it on radio for 20 years. He now runs his own publishing company, PD Footy, which produces podcasts on country football.

Carlo Minelli is about to discover that war and art are certainly not mutually exclusive. His politically ambitious father is carefully curating Carlo's future at the family's Lombardy vineyard. But Carlo and his artistic mother have other ideas. On the day he is meant to take up a highly coveted art scholarship at the French‐run Villa Medici in Rome, Il Duce declares war. Carlo is turned away from the heavily guarded entrance to the Villa, leaving him neither a student nor gainfully employed in support of the war effort. Press‐ganged into the Italian Army and captured in North Africa, Carlo the POW sketches and paints his way across three continents and several oceans, bringing the hardships of World War II into sharp relief against unexpected mateship, beauty and love. Luke Elliott and Claudia Marsden have fallen in love at a perilous time. The Second World War is raging in the Pacific, barbed wire and gun emplacements are strung along the northern beaches in preparation for invasion. As the war moves closer, their 'sextet' of loyal school friends is splintering as individual career dreams are pursued. Luke yearns to be a journalist but a start in newspapers is proving challenging. The war's end unexpectedly provides Luke's big break, but the pursuit of his dream will keep him away from Australia and Claudia, with surprising consequences for them both. "Above The Fold is a big-hearted novel that explicitly examines notions of love and loyalty... Anyone who enjoys reading about post-war Australian history and the attitudes that informed much of it, will be delighted." Gabrielle Lord, author of Dishonour
For much of the World War II conflict, Japan had been a safe haven for its citizens, far, far away from Germany's relentless advance in Europe and the daily horrors of such events as the London blitz, concentration camps and the fall of France. But Alex Faure always felt that one day the war would come with a vengeance to the Land of the Rising Sun, although even he was astonished by the ferocity with which the Allied forces exacted their retribution on the place he's always called home. Up until then, life had been good for Alex in Japan. The son of a French father and White Russian mother, he grew up and went to school in the port of Yokohama. The local community of foreigners was a tight knit, highly social group, the bulk of whom spent their summers at the holiday playground of Karuizawa in the mountains. As a gaijin or European with a command of English, French and Japanese, Alex looked forward to a good life in Japan after graduating from school and completing his tertiary education at Harvard in the US.

From the bestselling author of Above the Fold and Dragons in the Forest.
From the bestselling author of A Bitter Harvest and Dragons in the Forest.
William Patterson is a wealthy ambitious politician with a scandalous past. Elizabeth is his beloved daughter, beautiful and headstrong. Stefan Muller is a poor German migrant seeking a better life in Australia.
Like many young and idealistic Australian men, Stephen Conway rushed to enlist in the 'war to end all wars' in 1914. After a hasty marriage, Stephen leaves his new wife with a baby on the way and is shipped to Gallipoli. Very soon, though, the promise of adventure and glory of battle vanish completely as the reality of war sets in.
As a young nation comes of age, these three lives collide igniting an epic tale of political manoeuvring, prejudice wrought by war, love and loss - a sweeping saga that traverses the bright lights of Sydney, the battlefields of Europe, and the picturesque Barossa Valley. Peter Yeldham's first historical novel, A Bitter Harvest, expertly weaves fictional characters into the tapestry of actual events in Australia and the world in the early part of the 20th Century.

After four nightmarish years, Stephen is the lone survivor of his platoon fighting in the trenches of France's bloody battlefields. Traumatised and exhausted he inexplicably disappears and the official record of his life comes to an abrupt end that is until his grandson, Patrick, discovers his diary more than 80 years later.

Here's the simple truth: every successful small business owner thinks and behaves differently to every unsuccessful small business owner, and how you think and behave will have a direct influence on what you will or won't achieve in life, both personally and professionally. Does this mean that the amount of money you make equates to your level of success? No, it doesn't, but for some strange reason money does flow towards successful business owners, and this

`You don't know what you have until it's gone.' This saying is especially true for your health. Random luck plays a large role, but you can make your own luck as well. With over 25 years of experience in family medical practice, Dr. Roger Smith has seen many telling examples of this. Just as you need to provide sufficient care for your car to keep it running well, your own personal vehicle (your body) is no different. If you neglect to service your car or ignore warning signs of trouble, you risk a major breakdown. Neglecting your car may be expensive, but at least it's replaceable. Unlike your body ‐ where it's not so easy to undo years of neglect. But with the right attention and personal effort, you will be able to perform a skilful U‐turn and your health may improve dramatically. So come along for a simple drive to a healthier life, and live longer too!

"I know firsthand how limiting it can be growing up and living a life with a body that is abnormally big. I have been there. Hated it. It is definitely not a time I look upon with fond memories." A "big" boy at birth and everybody said he looked beautiful ‐ like a prince. But nobody could foresee a demon later would live within him, insidiously nibbling away at his mind and body. By the age of six he had gained considerable weight and at the age of seventeen he was considered obese. At school, this physicality attracted racial jokes, humiliation, ridicule, depression ‐ and ultimately an attempted suicide. Just after he had sufficiently recovered from these "nightmares", another punishment awaited him ‐ a bowel disease that has no cure. Feeling embarrassed by his big body, he shut himself off from family and friends and missed all the fun and happiness which other boys and people of his age were enjoying. Concomitantly, his anger towards his parents multiplied, who could only watch helplessly. A poignant story about a young person's struggle with obesity, completed just a week before his death. Educational, engrossing, riveting, heart wrenching. An excellent book for an understanding of obesity.
Author Information Amon Rao was born in the Fiji Islands in 1984 and obtained his primary education in Fiji and Scotland and secondary education in Melbourne. After completing a master’s degree in commerce from Sydney University, he became a software developer and a weight‐loss coach. He firmly believed that everybody had the ability to lose weight and obtain their dream body. Amon had experienced obesity by the age of six and struggled with this issue for most of his life. By the time he was twenty‐one years old, he weighed 180 kilos. Over a period of several years he engaged in a range of physical activities and dieting to fight this weighty problem. Amon had left a draft of this manuscript a week before his untimely death in 2016.

A man wakes up one morning to find an unknown woman in bed beside him. A failed writer devises an ingenious method of plagiarizing the work of others. Whole properties in a suburban neighbourhood begin vanishing overnight. An ancient grand piano is purchased by a mysterious young customer with an old secret. A spontaneous experiment in the paranormal produces an unexpected result... This collection of 14 short stories is Alex Skovron's second book of fiction, after his novella The Poet (2005) introduces an eclectic range of protagonists, predicaments, voices, and narrative styles ‐ playful, earnest, speculative, ironic, intimate, bittersweet, surreal. Between them, the characters' stories highlight the untoward in the everyday, the transformative in the mundane, the twists and turning‐points that can challenge us ‐ and the games we play with others, and with ourselves. 'Intricate, dreamy, deeply literate stories that unsettle the senses and stir the intellect.' ‐Helen Garner. 'By turns beautifully detailed, puzzling and always intriguing, the hauntingly solitary tone of these exquisitely observed stories induces a rare meditative attentiveness in the reader. It is a powerfully affecting collection that left me eager
Author Information Alex Skovron is the author of six collections of poetry and a prose novella; his most recent book, Towards the Equator: New & Selected Poems (2014), was shortlisted in the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards. Other awards for his poetry have included the Wesley Michel Wright Prize, the John Shaw Neilson Award, the Australian Book Review Poetry Prize, and for his first book, The Rearrangement (1988), the Anne Elder and Mary Gilmore awards. His novella, The Poet (2005), was joint winner of the FAW Christina Stead Award for fiction, and has been translated into Czech.

Based on the Japanese collaborative poetic form, Renga: 100 Poems is a co‐authored book by Australian poet John Kinsella and American poet Paul Kane. Each poem in the book, written across a decade, replies to a previous one by the other poet, creating a rich and layered texture of meaning and effect. Using a call and response format, the two poets explore the similarities and differences encountered in their mirror lives, as each has spent years living in the other's country and is deeply engaged in both Australian and American literature. As both poets live in rural areas and have been concerned with ecological issues, many of the poems focus on the global environmental crisis, but the various thematic threads that make up this book weave a complex pattern that deepens and transforms over the course of the book.
Author Information John Kinsella is an Australian poet. A Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge University, he is also Professor of Literature and Environment at Curtin University. Recent books include Drowning in Wheat: Selected and New Poems (Picador, 2016), the story collection Old Growth (Transit Lounge, 2017), and the critical work Polysituatedness (Manchester University Press, 2017). He frequently collaborates with other poets, writers, artists, musicians and cross-genre workers. Paul Kane is an American poet. His most recent book is Welcome Light (Audubon Terrace, 2016). He is the poetry editor of Antipodes and serves as Artistic Director of the Mildura Writers Festival and General Editor of the Braziller Series of Australian Poets. He has taught at Yale University and Monash University and is currently Professor of English at Vassar College, where he also teaches in the Environmental Studies Program. He divides his time between homes in Warwick, New York, and Talbot, Victoria, in Australia.

Steve (Stjepan) Horvat was born in 1937 in Croatia in the tiny village of Vučak, near the town of Donja Stubica, in Zagorje. He was the second of three children. His family went through some tough times, mainly living off a land that never gave enough, and it was always a struggle to make ends meet. This sort of life began to bother him even as a young boy. Somehow, though, despite their hard life, and the Second World War followed by the repression of communism, his mother and father manage to help him achieve the education he so much desired. When he was nineteen, after finishing his formal education, Steve escaped from communist Yugoslavia to Austria. He then migrated to Australia where he worked, played soccer, met Trauda, found happiness and became a successful businessman. His childhood dreams were fulfilled.

Australian poets have fused the mystical and the real with such skill and audacity. Laced with humour and an attention to poetry as something profoundly made, The Weight of Light is a collection to savour. ‐ David McCooey Kristen Lang's affinity for the natural world pulses everywhere in The Weight of Light like a drumbeat... In this impressively poised and controlled collection, Lang delves deep into questions of corporeality and ephemerality, always surfacing in clear, crystalline language. ‐ Sarah Holland‐Batt The Weight of Light asks you to listen with your bones. It refreshes you with its intelligence, care and clarity. It is both meditative, like a series of spiritual exercises, and visceral, firmly grounded in the living grass, milk, stones, streams, fire, bodies of place, of work, of journey.‐ Jill Jones
Author Information Kristen Lang published SkinNotes in 2017 (Walleah Press) and Let me show you a ripple in 2008 (self‐published). She lives near Sheffield in north‐west Tasmania where she was also raised. She was awarded a PhD at Deakin University in 2004 for her thesis on poetic creativity.

Xavier has used The Society and its ideals to seize control of the western realms. Now he is looking east towards Frith, the hub of commerce in the southern kingdoms. But The Society's belief that man must reign supreme over the lesser races leads them to encourage King Xavier to turn his armies north and destroy the auchs. In the north the auchs are gathering to prepare for a war predicted by the prophet Afi while Camille knows she must support the auchs in their fight against her people. And the little witch's powers are growing stronger every day. Behind all the troubles of the world lies the secret of the lost magic. Xavier has scoured his kingdoms for able‐bodied fighting men but where will he send them?
Author Information Steve Reilly lives on the NSW Central Coast. A MUST READ THRILLING PSYCHOLOGICAL GAME OF CAT AND MOUSE. Emily Moore, an everyday housewife with a loving husband and family, until one day an unexpected encounter with an intruder turns her life on its head. Was it a chance brush with fate, or did she fit his criteria? Emily unintentionally finds herself thrust into the limelight as a resilient and powerful role model for abuse victims. She continues to be an empowered strong role model as she attempts to reclaim her life and lost years as a mother. "Leonie Johnson gets you thinking about the abuser and the abused and how they deal with manipulation and emotional hurt. Set in the suburbs of Melbourne, this new author's portrayal of love, sex and abuse is very intimate, brutal and compelling, making you jump right into the scene." ‐ Marie Pietersz, Editor.
Author Information Leonie Johnson is married with two adult children. She began her working life within the finance sector and recently decided to follow her creative dreams. Her family is her greatest love and supports her many writing journeys. She enjoys helping others and being part of social groups and clubs. No event is too small to help organise. She started her writing life with short stories (life) poems in place of seemingly boring speeches. She progressed her artistic imagination and bold dreams, which sparked her creative ability into writing novels. Her writing allowed her to step out from the day-to-day humdrum of life and into the make believe. Her eight-month journey around Australia in 2015, travelling in a 1960 Triumph TR3a sports car gave her time to “smell the roses”, enabling her to write a large portion of her novel and open her mind.

Sylvia Breamer is a name now almost forgotten in film history, yet once she seemed destined to reach the top of the Hollywood acting profession. In 1918 the American fan magazine Photoplay hailed her " one of the acting finds of the year... Dusky, sensuous, sweet, a facile mirror to all of the voluptuous and most of the tender emotions..." Beautiful, talented and dedicated to her craft, Sylvia starred in films for such distinguished directors as Cecil B. De Mille, Maurice Tourneur, Sidney Franklin and Edwin Carewe. Who was Sylvia?, based on extensive original research, tells for the first time the enthralling life story of one of the first Australian born Hollywood stars. 'Who Was Sylvia? is one of those books you read for the sheer enjoyment of the story it tells, of the strange yet attractive character it describes and her travels from Australia to California.' ‐ Kevin Brownlow.
Author Information Ralph Marsden is a Melbourne based writer with long professional experience in many aspects of the motion picture and television industries in Australia and overseas. As a writer he has contributed articles on Melbourne's theatre history to the Victoria Theatres Trust quarterly, On Stage, as well as to other publications. Who was Sylvia?, a biography of and Australian born stage and silent screen actress, Sylvia Breamer, is his first published book.

Rob and Rosemary Peterswald, the authors of the bestselling titles From the Sea and Beyond the Shore, explore the Western Mediterranean on their yacht Sea Dreams. The Mediterranean Sea has been the cradle of western civilisation. From the earliest times it has nourished ancient empires, spawned countless legends and has been the scene of epic battles that have changed the course of history. Today it remains a place of beauty and danger, joy and pain, indulgence and austerity, and as much as ever, a crossroads of the world. On their cruise, the Peterswalds visit Sardinia, Corsica, Elba, the Balearics, Sicily and the coasts of France and Italy, capturing the beauty of the 'Middle Sea' and its wondrous coastline. They sail past high rugged mountains protected by ancient fortresses, anchor in enchanting bays and visit mystical cities that date from antiquity. This beautifully photographed book celebrates the joy and vibrancy of life in the Mediterranean, a life that still follows the rhythms of the ocean and the seasons. This book is for anyone who loves the excitement of travel to breathtaking localities stooped in history and culture, fantastic food and stunning photography and just the love of the open sea and sailing.
Sea Dreams in the Adriatic is the second in a series exploring the Mediterranean by Tasmanian couple, Rob and Rosemary Peterswald. Previous books by the authors include, the first book in this series, Sea Dreams in the Western Mediterranean, From the Sea and Beyond the Shore. In this superbly photographed book Sea Dreams continues her Mediterranean odyssey, sailing from the Messina Strait, across the foot of Italy to one of the world's most historically interesting and beautiful seas. She visits eastern Italy, Montenegro and the Dalmation and Istrian coasts and islands of Croatia, and Venice. Along the way are ancient cities that nurtured the Renaissance and remain inspirational today, fortresses and towering mountains that in summer are mostly framed by a perfect azure sky, yet can be menacing and veiled in swirling clouds. There are many sheltered harbours that have been havens from the earliest times, and every few miles there are delightful anchorages ‐ on quiet moorings off summer konobas where fish and lamb are grilled over smoky fires, or in rocky tree lined coves where the water is warm and crystal clear.

'His plan was outrageous and sprinkled with strife, to camouflage himself as Australian wildlife. He would fly like a bird or climb in a tree and no‐one would guess he was Rufus McPhee. HOWEVER... One Yelpy Kelpie was up for the chase, scampering along with her tongue in her face. Her ears and her nose were alert and a twitch as she sped round the corner and over the ditch.' 'Do You Mind?' tells the story of Raymond the Australian Bull who realises the value of true friendship. As he leaves the field in search of true happiness, he discovers that there is no possession one can own that is more valuable than true friendship. Follow Raymond as he embarks on the most amazing journey into the city. Hilariously funny, and with a strong moral, 'Do You Mind?' is an absolute roller coaster story with a wonderfully funny ending. What can the book do for your child? The book works in several ways. Not only will children find this hilarious story entertaining, they will also learn the true value of friendship. In a world where material objects are all the rage, it is important that children realise that there are some things that money cannot buy and true friendship is one of those things. The book is designed to inspire conversations at home and in the classroom about what true friendship means and how life can be full of surprises. The science behind the story. Raymond is a bull that lives with his friends in the fields of Australia. When we look into fields filled with cows and bulls we often think they are randomly placed. In reality, bulls and cows often have several close friends whom they will stay with for life. Cows and bulls are some of the only animals on Earth known to shed actual tears when upset. They crave affection and love being personally named. Raymond realises that the most valuable thing one can own is true friendship. He leaves behind his new material possessions and seeks the one thing that makes him truly happy. Gavin McCormack is a primary school teacher based in Sydney Australia who wants to change the way children learn the most important lessons of life. He has seen the impacts of negativity and selfishness in the classroom and playground and wants children to understand from an early age that a kind act can change the world for somebody else. Having worked in the classroom for almost 20 years he wanted to create a story that allows children to understand that a kind act is not carried out because of the rewards it brings but is actually its own reward. About the Illustrator Jennifer Cooper is an Australian artist who works in painting, collage, murals, speed painting, and illustration. Jennifer is constantly exploring new media and digital illustration is her latest phase. I darted into the cemetery and hid behind a tombstone. I hunched myself up, balancing on the balls of my feet, and peered desperately into the night, listening for whoever was out there to make another sound. It was freezing ‐ I had trouble keeping my jaw clamped shut so my teeth didn't chatter. Ish's dog is gone. Vanished in a country town. Mum's on holiday, Dad's in Sydney. Ish and his bossy sister, Molly, are staying with Gran. There are no clues. Only something mysterious in the town's graveyard. Then a bully from the local school starts to blackmail Ish. The A to Z of Congenial Creatures is a unique collection of poems that provides a fresh, amusing, and sometimes thought‐provoking picture of some of the best‐loved members of the animal kingdom. Although sometimes silly, it is much more than nonsense verse. The funny, but very real creatures will raise the reader's curiosity and prompt them to ask questions about the amazing animals with whom we share our planet. The poems appeal to adults as well as children which makes it an ideal book to be read aloud together. The poems are on the verso page.
Author Information Gordon Lindsay writes poetry, plays, film scripts, parodies and lyrics to original music. He is a published poet and was a finalist in Poetry Idol at the Melbourne Writers Festival. Most of his work is in the corporate sector devising and performing entertainments for corporate functions and product launches. He was asked to write some poems for Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals which he did with some trepidation as he was replacing the Ogden Nash ones. Some of them are in this book. After a few years of working in a graphic design studio, George Haddon joined the Melbourne Herald (now the HeraldSun) as an editorial designer and eventually became art director, daily sports cartoonist and editorial cartoonist. From 1997 until 2007 Haddon was illustrator-at-large for the RACV magazine RoyalAuto. A selection from this series was published by the RACV titled “George Haddon’s Victoria Sketchbook’ which coincided with an exhibition of original drawings from the series at Federation Square. George has won four Walkley Awards for illustration, three Australian Cartoonists’ Association ‘Stanley Awards’ for Humorous Illustration and was voted Cartoonist of the Year in 2004, by his peers in the Australian Cartoonists’ Association.
