Afterword by Dr Sarah Buckley MD, internationally acclaimed author of "Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering." Feeling anxious, alone or in the dark as a new mother to be? Where do you go to get your questions answered when you don’t have any mothers as the “wise woman” to turn to, the doctor is too busy to inform you of your options or discuss the pros and cons of various drugs and procedures on the menu, and you read virtually every magazine in the waiting room before he/ she can see you for five minutes at a time? Meanwhile, random strangers decide it is their maternal duty to share their birth horror stories when they spot the bump and the hospital antenatal classes leave you feeling even more fearful and anxious than you were before you walked in! Just when you thought you couldn’t bear to hear another horror story, along comes a fresh new book that is the answer to your prayers. More than just a random collection of stories, the author Katrina Zaslavsky, takes you on a powerful journey of discovery and gives you the keys to transforming your birth experience. Be empowered to experience the joy of natural birth on your own terms‐ Fear‐Free, Drug‐ Free and maybe even Pain Free… (Hint: Get off the beds ladies and actively give birth rather than being delivered)..... and then become a part of the Positive Birth Revolution!! As seen on national media including TV, My Child and Nature & Health Magazines, Coles Baby & Toddler Club, recommended at Mum's Lounge and voted Favourite Product Finalist in the People's Choice AusMumpreneur Awards 2012.

The book is a journey Gaye and her son Lucas, began together in his early teens. The conversations were taken from a span of around eight years, so some are quite naive and others…well, not. Gaye and Lucas put some tricky topics on the table addressing them openly and honestly. The book answers some very personal and potentially embarrassing questions with a positive sensitivity and a good dose of common sense. The book is not only for teens dealing with the possibility of being gay, it is also for other young people going through puberty where there seems to be an inbuilt curiosity about homosexuality and experimentation with same gender sex is not unusual. In any case, TEEN QUEERIES will prove to be an informative, interesting read for teens, their parents, friends, teachers, coaches and anyone else who has a teen queerie in their life…and for those of us that are just curious.

Pulling the plug on media myths and body image. Ever wondered why you don’t look like the guys in magazine ads? How does that make you feel? There are heaps of books about how popular culture (like advertising) affects the way you feel about yourself. Unfortunately, they’re mostly written about young people … until now! This book is written for you. We’re going to take a behind‐the‐scenes look at how the media industry works, teaching you to critically and independently evaluate what you see, hear or read in different types of popular culture, such as the media. You’ll also learn how to develop and maintain a positive body image as you muscle your way through the media maze. ‘This book does an admirable job of looking at the lives of young men and how they can be influenced by the media.’ Aaron Frost, Psychologist

John Pascoe Fawkner arrived in the Derwent with David Collins’ party in February 1804, and watched the birth of the settlement and its fight to survive during its early years. More than sixty years later he returned to Hobart Town to interview its early pioneers and to prepare his memoirs of those times. Fawkner’s memories were not always accurate (he was a boy when he arrived), and some of his accounts of events were based on hearsay or oral history. Nevertheless, his memoir is a valuable historical record, containing much information not found elsewhere. Unlike most other surviving accounts of early Hobart Town, it is written from the perspective of the free settler, and provides an insight into many aspects of daily life: encounters with Aborigines and bushrangers; fire, starvation and other hardships of life on the land. It reflects what ordinary people thought, felt or believed, and adds a valuable human dimension to the scanty official records of the period.

Robert Knopwood's diary of Hobart Town's first year begins with the arrival of Lieutenant Governor David Collins and a party of convicts and settlers in February 1804. The diary is an important historical record of the colony's infancy, with descriptions of the landing at Sullivan Cove, the first buildings and the first contacts with the Aboriginal people. It also offers a glimpse of the society which was to form the first permanent European settlement in Van Diemen's Land, and throws some light on little‐known disputes between Collins and his officers. As well as carrying out his duties as chaplain and magistrate, Knopwood regularly went into the bush to hunt for kangaroos, emus and other game, and took part in some of the earliest explorations of the Derwent and Huon valleys. Being a convivial and gregarious man at the centre of events in the little settlement, Knopwood had contact with most of the colonists, and the diary contains the names of almost 100 of Tasmania's first settlers.

January 2013 This historical narrative tells the story of the shelling of Sydney and Newcastle in 1942 by Japanese submarines. Although casualties and damage were slight, the bombardments fuelled the real fear of an impending Japanese invasion, a fate dreaded by Australians for a century before 1942. The narrative reconstructs the events that occurred in both cities and includes the search for, recovery and disposal of unexploded shells. In recounting this legendary tale of two cities, the book also examines Australia’s east coast defences, the activities of the National Emergency Service, and the management and communications structures that were implemented during the early stages of the Pacific War. To put it all into context, A Parting Shot also offers a Japanese perspective to the story through a critical account of Japan’s submarine operations in Australian waters. Why did the Japanese launch submarine operations in Australian waters when they had no intention of invading? Were the bombardments revenge attacks following the Japanese defeat at Midway? What were the Japanese targets in Sydney and Newcastle? Were all the unexploded shells recovered? A Parting Shot answer these and other long‐ standing questions, dispelling many rumours and urban myths surrounding the Japanese submarine attacks.
A Parting Shot Shelling of Australia by Japanese Submarines 1942 Author
The Foreword has been written by Dr Peter Stanley, Head, Research Centre, National Museum of Australia. A Parting Shot adds to the controversial debate on the “Battle for Australia”. It also announces that one live Japanese shell remains buried on the Royal Sydney golf links.

part two of the Shadowed Days Mid‐50s to mid‐60s Melbourne—a Wowserland of 6 o'clock closing, censorship, endless suburbia … ... we could settle down. But that was the farthest thing from our minds. We didn’t want security, we wanted adventure, risk, experience, we wanted to see and grasp the world ... In Fare Thee Well, Hoddle Grid, Garry Kinnane continues the story, begun in Shadowed Days, of a young man looking for his direction in life. Having left school early, Garry finds himself at twenty‐one in danger of working forever as an insurance clerk in the city. But gradually he finds an escape route—through night classes in literature, the folk‐revival, The Push, the attractions of a Bohemian life … GARRY KINNANE is the author of George Johnston: A Biography (winner of The Age Book of the Year 1986), and Colin Colahan: A Portrait. His memoir Shadowed Days was shortlisted in the 2009 Queensland Premiers Literary Awards for non‐fiction.

When he digs deeper into the mysteries of the mountain, there are unexpected consequences for himself and the small Greek fishing village below. A few months after her arrival in Australia, eighteen year old Chris Baxter reads a letter addressed to her boyfriend’s mother that sets the course for the rest of her life. She becomes a teacher of children with disability and fights for their inclusion in the community, and in the education system from which they have been barred. Together with Rosemary Crossley and Anne McDonald she becomes embroiled in the infamous St Nicholas hospital controversy and takes up the cause of Ethel Temby, the mother of a tiny baby with Down syndrome she’d seen in the nursery at Kew Cottages. Chris is angered by the injustice of what she sees. She knows Kenny would be able to walk, if he had the opportunity to do so, and that Annie and her friends would be able to learn, if allowed to go to school. She wages a struggle with bureaucrats and politicians but falls back into frustrated despondency when successive governments fail to act. The media comes to the rescue, and with a bit of help from Ethel, pushes the local campaign along. When the battle to close the institutions goes global, Chris continues her work; pushing for inclusion in Australia and abroad. Finally, the transformation they want happens. The stark reality of the situation turns intensely personal when a family member is diagnosed with autism. Chris gets a shock! Undeterred, she maintains the course set by that chance letter so many years ago and the story ends with a very good reason to hope. As her rollercoaster story unfolds, Chris captures all the drama, politics and in‐ fighting of a sad and neglected aspect of Australia’s recent social history. Her insider’s view is told with all the urgency, intensity and feeling of a front‐line fighter who knows that the war is not yet fully won.

Lou had waited a long time to get married and have children. In fact, the shock and relief expressed by her friends and family when she announced her engagement registered on the Richter Scale. She had given Steve’s proposal, when it came after a year of dating, brief but serious consideration. She was thirty eight. As far as she was concerned, this was as good as it gets. When Steve pulled the rug out from under her and their two year‐old daughter Alex, and unborn child three‐and‐a‐half years later, Lou was left reeling from the shock. Suddenly she was living a life not of her choosing. She was a single, unemployed, pregnant and middle‐aged mother bunking with her parents, fighting to protect her daughter from the fall‐out of a marriage in crisis, and a world shattering around them. But, if Lou could not stop Alex’s father from leaving them, then she was going to make damn sure that her daughter learned to live a life that bounced back from adversity, took no prisoners and was heartfelt. On the Ropes is an honest and poignant account from mother to daughter about the implosion of their family, and the lessons learned along the way. It’s at times funny and whimsical in the face of a serious relationship breakdown, which not only affects the main players, but the supporting cast of siblings, parents, inlaws, friends and even new un‐invited and unwelcome partners who arrive on the scene. It’s a family drama at its very best—and very worst.

When Donald Macleod, a scion of the mobile phone industry, suspects that subliminal messages transmitted over a German mobile phone network are impacting local by‐elections in favour of the Neo‐Nazi candidates, he sets out to find proof. To do so, he must confront Heinrich Von Scheer, owner of the German network. But before he can, Donald's plane crashes in the Swiss Alps and he is missing, presumed killed. His son, Jack, suspects Von Scheer, and determines to expose him. But Jack soon finds himself the subject of a Europe‐wide manhunt, pursued by the Neo‐Nazis as well as the authorities. Desperate and on the run, Jack seeks the help of his friend, Harry Donovan, and Fabiana Santini, an Interpol inspector who risks everything for this case ‐ and for love. As the murder mystery deepens, Jack enlists more assistance in the form of a Swedish professor, a reformed Dutch smuggler, an embittered French telecommunications executive and a mysterious protector. Before he is hunted down, Jack must reach England ‐ and the one man on earth who can help them... Publicity Author James Pratt has navigated 60 author signings and book club appearances up and down the east coast of Australia. Response and feedback has been so good to these events that his second novel Cassidy’s Conflict to be released in 2013 - will be highly anticipated.

Preconception and expectation are shown to be misleading in this fun, light‐hearted adventure. 5+

John Wells, himself a Gippslander, has discovered through his own meticulous research and by talking with those who remember both the hard times and the 'good old days' a wealth of fascinating information about the area's history and its people. We are shown the early prospectors who left their mark in 'Mt Misery'; the hardy farmers like Angus McMillan, who established a cattle trade through Port Albert; those who explored unknown country; those who chased dreams of gold, and those who made fortunes from the discovery of coal. Many of the early settlers who made Gippsland what it is today might even be regarded as a little eccentric. There is, for example, Solomon Kinsley, who lived in a log. There is the prospector who, when his clothes wore out, made himself a suit of tin. And there is Mrs Harris, who struggled to transport a grand piano across rough country by bullock dray so that her daughters might have the chance to grow up as 'ladies'. Some are remembered for their bravery and initiative‐like Joseph Gellibrand, who pushed through unexplored dry bush in the middle of an 1830s heat wave. But equally deserving of remembrance are the unsung heroes and heroines: those who built schools, who fought fires, who built railways, or who sold milk and cream; those who were blushing debutants and sturdy wives.
Tales of courageous settlers carving their homes out of scrub, murders in a mysterious enclosed valley, and ship‐wrecks on the high seas, make this collection of stories about Old Gippsland absorbing reading. Existing in wretched living conditions, the settlers built homes for their families. Many are remembered for their determination, such as one man who had to remove seventy two large trees just to make a clearing for his house, and Martha Jane King who turned 6000 hectares of virgin bush into the magnificent Bunguyan Station. It is said that when she arrived in Australia she sat on a log and cried. She was in a new country, a desolate and primitive land, with young children and no husband, for he had died on the journey. But her determination proved for her family in the rough ready days of the 1840s. Other pioneers are remembered for their bravery and initiative, like the Reverend F. A. Hagenauer who set up the Ramahyuck Mission for Aborigines on Lake Wellington.Working under harsh conditions, this humane and benevolent man won the confidence of the Aborigines and eventually the mission boasted a butcher's shop, a small hospital, a school, a library, a church, eleven houses for Aborigines, and a large storehouse.

The story of Gippsland is a sum of many parts, and the whole is greater than those parts. Gippsland in many ways is the last frontier of Victoria. The nature of the land, the forests and the seas made sure of that. Here, in one volume, is a history of Gippsland that collects those parts and uses them to paint a picture of Gippsland over the last two hundred years. It shows the exploration, the development and the progress, along with the difficulties and joys, hazards and successes of mostly average people ‐ the little people of history. In their story lies the real history of the Province. It shows how they lived, where and why. Lightly told, but authoritative, this book pays tribute to a region that has been of vital importance to Victoria and Australia. Most of Victoria's coal, its electricity, gas and oil, pass through a narrow 'corridor' to Melbourne and the rest of Australia. Yet this wealth was preceded by pioneers who faced daunting barriers to succeed. Some survived and others didn't, but all showed the spirit of Australia's pioneers. They are all here in an easily readable book that tells the story of Gippsland and pays tribute to those who had the vision to give us what we have today.

Tells the story of lakes transport, including the economic strategies of the companies who ran the ships. The book offers a new interpretation of the fascinating story of the settlement of Gippsland. Researched from primary sources, it focuses on the crucial importance of shipping on the Gippsland Lakes in opening up a difficult province. It is an engrossing narrative of pioneer navigators, of spirited contests and of the waterways which breathed life into Gippsland's infant industries. Central to the story is the construction of the artificial entrance and its impact on the lakes. Through their use as highways of water the lakes have been irrevocably changed. Although the reasons for change have been told with empathy, this book is a testament to the folly of modifying environments without fully understanding the consequences.
