Australian Heroines of World War One is the story of eight courageous women through diaries, letters, original photos, paintings and maps. These eight women had the courage and strength for which the Anzacs are renowned and the compassion and tenderness that only a woman can bring. One brave nursing sister Hilda Samsing became a whistleblower. Nursing aboard the hospital ship Gascon, outraged by the bungled evacuation of wounded Anzacs which was censored out of the press she let her diary be shown in high places which raised questions in the House of Commons. In Belgium, Louise Creed, a Sydney journalist caught in the besieged city of Antwerp made a hair‐raising escape from a German firing squad and lived to tell the tale. Brisbane's Grace Wilson, ordered to establish an emergency hospital on drought ridden Lemnos Island, arrived there to find suffering Anzacs but no drinking water, tents or medical supplies. Grace and her nurses tore up their petticoats to use as bandages, survived for weeks on bully beef and biscuits and saved the lives of thousands wounded at Lone Pine and the Nek. In November 1915 after a blizzard hit the trenches of Gallipoli they cared for Anzacs with frostbitten or gangrenous feet. After surviving hardship on Lemnos, young Florence James‐ Wallace works in France near the front line in a Casualty Clearing, treating soldiers with hideous wounds or blinded by mustard gas. The Germans emerged from their trenches and advanced as Florence and her stretcher cases escaped by lorry. In 1918 after years spent nursing men smashed and pulverised by machine gun fire she faced yet another challenge ‐ an epidemic of Spanish flu. They returned to a world that only recognised male courage and were quickly forgotten, two of them awarded such meagre pensions they died destitute and forgotten. "This book will become compulsory reading for every Australian." Dame Elizabeth Murdoch, convinced of the significance of these stories graciously assisted the funding of this book. Susanna de Vries is one of Australia's most acknowledged writers. Her books are sold worldwide and this is to be her most sincere to date. Would you like to control your financial destiny? Think you could do a better job with your retirement savings than your super fund? Anything is possible if you Keep It Super Simple (KISS). The KISS approach to creating wealth through your Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) will explain how to take control and KISS your big superannuation fund goodbye. Most Australians understand that their superannuation provides money when they retire, but not many take the time to look at the various alternatives available to build more wealth in a most tax-effective way along the way. Authors and superannuation experts Barbara Smith and Ed Koken have been concerned about the disappointing investment returns in most people's superannuation funds over the last few years. Whether this be due to the global financial crisis, poor management, excessive fees or all of the above, they are convinced there is a better, more simple and straightforward way to build and protect retirement savings. Throughout this book they show just how easy it is to set up and manage your own superannuation money. They explain in plain English how to start your own SMSF, different investment approaches and strategies you can follow, managing cash flow, tax, insurance, how the superannuation laws apply to SMSFs, and much, much more. BARBARA SMITH AM, NTAAF, MTax, MBus, BBus, BEd, DipEd, Dip Financial Planning and DR ED KOKEN NTAAF, PhD, MBA, MMT, MAcct, MSc, BSc are both Fellows of, and hold Practicing Certificates, with the National Tax and Accountants' Association, registered tax agents, qualified accountants and financial planners, and are widely acknowledged as leading authorities on tax, superannuation and retirement planning in Australia. They are joint owners of Oasis Wealth Pty Ltd, a boutique independent financial services company. Together they have written several books, most recently Retire Richer Youner (Major Street, 2010). Major Street is the publisher of best selling Australian business books including Margaret Lomas's Investing in the Right Property Now! ((9780987084910))

2012 has been a big and tumultuous ride with Island and we’re celebrating with a Summer issue packed to the brim. The final issue from guest editor Dale Campisi, Island 131 features a gorgeous photographic essay from Austrian‐Tasmanian Ilona Schneiders of Queenstown, a visually paradoxical mining town on Tasmania’s rugged West Coast as well as an essay from Island’s very first editor, Andrew Sant ‘On Being Transported.’ In Island 131 you’ll also find an eclectic range of essays on diverse subjects – including the history of the mini‐break for the literary set by Mel Campbell, the future of short fiction and the demise of Wet Ink, by the fiction editor of Wet Ink, David Sornig and a reflection on long journeys without cigarettes by Robert F Coleman. The two winners of this year’s Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize, Fiona Hile and David Bunn’s winning poems are in here as is some exciting new fiction –including stories by Jennifer Mills, AS Patric and Robyn Mundy . These stories will take you from arctic exploration to the red centre and then, just down the street.

JRR Tolkien’s inspiration for his best-selling books, The Lord of the Rings, has always been a mystery. Tolkien himself stated that his ideas came to him as though they already existed, but he couldn’t name their source. For generations countless researchers and biographers have sought to identify Tolkien’s inspiration without success. Now, at last, the answer is at hand. Abyssinia (modern day Ethiopia) was an ancient Christian Empire that was one of the world’s four greatest powers after the time of Christ, but it became isolated by the rise of Islam. Besieged in its highland fortress, it became a land untouched by the passage of time. It survived as the only part of Africa that was not colonized by European powers, and became internationally prominent in the years immediately prior to Tolkien’s writing because of the Italian war in 1935. Home to a 3,000 year old dynasty of kings and the horse-riding prowess of the Oromo tribe, Abyssinia’s history is rich and varied The legends of its greatest saints are unique, and around its borders it faced powerful enemies. The Real Middle-earth: The Origins of The Lord of the Rings reveals fascinating insights into Tolkien and the ancient realm of Abyssinia, and makes connections between them that will leave you astounded.

Eight year-old Emmaline and her best friend Rosemary empathise with and support the older, much-bullied, but highly musically gifted Rhupert. The girls are aghast at how little support they receive from the school; one of the bullies happens to be the son of the school principal. Rhupert’s seemingly growing confidence diminishes when the bullies discover he will attend the same secondary school as their brothers the following year. They do everything possible to convince him the bullying won’t cease. Finally, events take an unexpected but very sad turn. Emmaline’s life is turned upside down and things will never be the same again. Parents and teachers will want to read this very moving account with their older primary school offspring and students in the hope of conveying the possible tragic outcome of bullying. About the Author Rhonda Schwab was born in 1947 in Burwood Victoria, and attended primary and secondary schools in Ashburton and Ashwood, respectively. Rhonda worked as a dental nurse for some time and she also took on some retail positions. She loved English at school and always thought she might one day take up writing. Her knowledge of one victim’s suffering — hopelessness, sadness, worthlessness and fear — from being bullied back in the fifties when she was growing up, and her awareness of its prevalence in society today compelled her to write this account in the hope it would act as a warning to children and adults. Jill was born in Melbourne Australia, and worked in many industries including transport and media, before realizing that common to all her roles was the need to sell concepts and services, business to business. Jill's passion for this kind of persuasion, (the challenging area of creating value for something that can't be seen) led to a major career change. In 1991 Jill joined Rogen International, a global communication consultancy, and became a founding partner in the Australian operations. For 13 years she learned, practiced and developed the art of helping others to improve their communication. Her work with Rogen took her to Singapore, London, New Zealand, Malaysia and covered many industries including: advertising, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, resources, professional services and financial services. Jill has always helped individuals and teams get a business result by being more persuasive in the way they communicated the value of their services and ideas. During these 13 years she trained, consulted and coached business people in management and executive positions. Work took her to London in 2001, and in 2003 she made the decision to freelance. The combination of Jill's experiences, means she has a well developed ability to quickly diagnose communication issues and skill gaps. She then works with clients in the most practical flexible way to address these gaps prior to major events or business deals.

GARDENING legend and long-time columnist for The Courier-Mail, Colin Campbell, died after a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his four sons and his wife of 36 years, Bev. Just before he died, Mr Campbell confided to his wife that he had wanted to change the world. Mr Campbell, 78, who died on the Sunshine Coast, leaves a legacy that many see every day in their own gardens or as they walk through Brisbane's Roma Street Gardens. In 1997, through the pages of The Courier-Mail, Mr Campbell proposed the creation of a world-class garden in the disused Roma Street railway yards. The gardens that now grace what was once an eyesore are testament to his resolve. But is was through his gardening columns, radio and television segments and countless workshops and casual chats with garden lovers that he touched so many. Mr Campbell was awarded an Order of Australia Medal on Australia Day 2007 for his services to horticulture. The former New Zealander had been Queensland presenter of the ABC's Gardening Australia, hosted radio talkback shows, been a prolific writer and, since January 1991, arguably the most popular columnist for The Courier-Mail. He conducted the Radio 4BC Talk Gardening program for almost 29 years, retiring on New Years Day 2012.

Sarah's parents rushed her to several small country hospitals in search of help. Yet before adequate tests had been performed, doctors announced that Sarah was pregnant ‐ an outrageous misdiagnosis that triggered a devastating chain of events for the family. It was only when Sarah was finally transferred to a large teaching hospital that doctors discovered the true diagnosis: a rare condition they had never seen before... and wanted to study. When Mark and Dianne asked the usual questions about their daughter's treatment, doctors stonewalled them. Unable to penetrate the strange medical secrecy surrounding Sarah's case, her parents set out on their own to find the best treatment available for their daughter. However, Sarah's doctors had other ideas, and summoned the help of a government department with police powers to force their will on the young girl. The unsuspecting family suddenly found themselves up against a powerful industry and an utterly ruthless state system. Nothing could have prepared them for the horrors they would have to face... A chilling glimpse into the dark side of health care.

His best friend's daughter has been abducted in Mexico. This is no ordinary kidnap for ransom. But then, Lee McCloud is no ordinary man. Having suffered the horror of witnessing his sister kidnapped when he was fourteen, the abduction of his goddaughter Sophia in Mexico is an opportunity for Delta Force operator McCloud to deliver some badly needed justice. Things don't go as planned, and McCloud finds himself teamed with Tally, a computer hacker in a secret organisation that raids the bank accounts of wealthy terrorists, and Scotty, a British SAS soldier. Determined to save Sophia at all costs, McCloud finds himself on a collision course with an exiled Saudi, Sheik Khalid, whose ambitions feature a key role for Sophia. McCloud and Tally find themselves trapped in a conspiracy, hunted by enemies on both sides, and conflicted by their feelings for each other. But time is running out. With their haunted pasts catching up, McCloud and Tally need to stop a horrific plot involving Sophia that will have profound consequences for an already unstable world.

While a poet in love with language slept on the beach, his shadow went for a long swim in the ocean, breathing water as only shadows can; on returning and before reattachment it shook itself dry. The poet woke to the memories of his shadow’s journey and the paradox of retching seawater while laughing with gusto in abundant air. Then he crafted—and crafted—one of the most delightfully original debut collections of poetry published in Australia in recent years. This is it. - Mal McKimmie

The Good Boy is a first‐hand account of a young man's struggle with religion, gay sex, marriage and middle‐class morality. The writer first looks at the hero's pioneering ancestors and behavioural links across the generations of the extended Irish Catholic families into which he was born. A quiet 'middle' child, he grows through the turmoil and confusion of a hormone‐charged adolescence, facing the dilemma of how to follow the teachings of the church, yet get enough sex. He finds part‐time work as a gigolo, a life model and even as a minor actor in the gay porn industry. Sensing the self‐destructive nature of this course of action, he seeks safety in a Trappist monastery, but after a year or two of peace and silence, he returns to the 'real' world of middle‐class morality, sex and sin. Desperate to be 'normal', he chooses to be heterosexual, meets and marries a pretty girl... Only in middle age does he accept that he is, and always was, homosexual, recognising that the pursuit of happiness is the most basic of human drives. Selling Points Would appeal to a wide cross‐section of society in that it contains useful messages about sexual orientation and the unintended but often harmful effects of guilt‐generating religions. It does not advocate unbridled hedonism, but the fundamental message is that the best way to be happy in life is to help others to be happy.

Shanaka Fernando is often hailed as a modern-day revolutionary best known for his 'pay-what-you-canafford' community restaurants in Melbourne. He was named Australia's Local Hero in the Australian of the Year Awards and was a guest judge on MasterChef alongside the Dalai Lama. This book strips back the labels that have been slapped onto Shanaka's mediabuilt poster boy persona and gives us an insight into some of the experiences that have shaped the man he has become. This entrancingly honest and refreshingly candid memoir hints at the roots of Shanaka's early social awakening with tales of a 1970s childhood in Sri Lanka's capital, Columbo. From his upbringing within an eccentric extended family living in a residential compound populated with a throng of memorable characters, we accompany the grown up Shanaka on his travels from Australia to Asia to South America and back as he explores new ways of living his life.

"Fernando is one of those rare pioneers who are prepared to live by their convictions, flaunt social convention and challenge the status quo. The story of his lifelong quest for meaning - and the 'experiment in generosity' that became Lentil As Anything - is inspiring and challenging in equal measure. Few autobiographies are likely to evoke the senses and soul quite as much as Fernando's tale of global travel, self-exploration and cultural innovation"- Dr Wayne Visser, Director of Kaleidoscope Futures and author of "The Quest for Sustainable Business" and "The Age of Responsibility"
Shanaka will be appearing on 4th March, 2.30pm at Adelaide Writer’s Festival.

Rhys's teacher, Mr Shakespeare, wants him to write a story. But is it all as it seems? But it's no easy task ‐ especially when he's got writer's block and doesn't get along with his teacher. Throw in class pest, Alex, and a time out, and he's got a recipe for disaster. Inspiration comes from an unexpected source, and the story of a cricket match, a new neighbour, and an annoying cat becomes a winner.

Georgia doesn't like sudden changes, so when she and het mother move into Nan's house, she's hardly dancing in the street. But it's funny how a strange old house, a weird new friend, a crabby neighbour and a cat called Turbo can make a girl's life so interesting. And it's not like a girl can just sit around when there's mysteries to solve....
CAT‐astrophe is a fun and entertaining read that I'm sure would be enjoyed by young boys. This story is along the same lines as the Just books and Captain Underpants series: crazy, funny and really silly ‐ everything a nine‐yearold boy loves in a book.

And then she is faced with a huge decision ‐ a chance to go back to her old life ‐ but it comes at a cost. Follow Jessica's journey as she struggles to find the right path and deals with the trauma of a new life, her first relationship, and growing up.

Boondaburra is sad. Why do the other animals make fun of him just because he is different? When tragedy strikes in the Australian bush, Boondaburra learns that being unique has its advantages. Boondaburra is the story of a platypus' journey from rejection to accepting and understanding his uniqueness, and the friends who come to accept and admire those differences.
