November 2012 The Dingoes' Lament The Dingoes reached the climax of their Australian success in 1974 with their self‐titled LP and singles Way Out West and Boy on the Run. This is the story of their one chance to make it big on the international stage. It is a hilarious road trip story of five Aussie musicians travelling across the USA in preparation for their big break ‐ supporting their stable‐ mates Lynyrd Skynyrd on a national tour. When they get to New York they receive the shattering news that Lynyrd Skynyd's plane has crashed. The hopes of the Dingoes crash along with it. It is a story of making music, life in a band, but above all it is a yarn, in the best Australian tradition, spun around true events and real characters. The Dingoes were inducted in the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010 and re‐formed to record and tour in 2011 About the Author John Bois is the bass player of the Dingoes. He currently lives in Florida, U.S.A. where he teaches High School Biology. John Tait, who provides the discography and other notes in the book is a music writer and retailer and the author of the only book on the Easybeats, entitled ‘Vanda and Young’ • There is a dedicated band of hard core Dingoes fans who will be first to buy the book. The Dingoes were very much a Melbourne band. They were legends at the Station Hotel in Greville St, Prahran and their best record sales were always in Melbourne. As revealed on their 2011 tour they still have a league of fans. • This story will have appeal to all fans of Australian music. The Dingoes straddle Blues, Rock and Country genres. • Unlike the usual music bio, this book can be enjoyed by anyone even if they have never heard of the Dingoes. It is written as a bawdy road trip similar in style to the very popular and successful creative novels written by Billy Thorpe.

The Good Boy is a first‐hand account of a young man’s struggle with religion, gay sex, marriage and middle‐class morality. The writer first looks at the hero’s pioneering ancestors and behavioural links across the generations of the extended Irish Catholic families into which he was born. A quiet ‘middle’ child, he grows through the turmoil and confusion of a hormone‐charged adolescence, facing the dilemma of how to follow the teachings of the church, yet get enough sex. He finds part‐time work as a gigolo, a life model and even as a minor actor in the gay porn industry. Sensing the self‐destructive nature of this course of action, he seeks safety in a Trappist monastery, but after a year or two of peace and silence, he returns to the ‘real’ world of middle‐class morality, sex and sin. Desperate to be ‘normal’, he chooses to be heterosexual, meets and marries a pretty girl … Only in middle age does he accept that he is, and always was, homosexual, recognising that the pursuit of happiness is the most basic of human drives. Selling Points Would appeal to a wide cross‐section of society in that it contains useful messages about sexual orientation and the unintended but often harmful effects of guilt‐generating religions. It does not advocate unbridled hedonism, but the fundamental message is that the best way to be happy in life is to help others to be happy.

November 2012 Award Winning Australian Writing 2012 Now in its fifth edition, Award Winning Australian Writing (AWAW) continues its commitment to showcasing the best short stories and poems that have won competitions around the country. This year, Melbourne Books is again expanding the project, increasing the number of featured pieces to over fifty. AWAW 2012 will also proudly include a foreword by Mark Tredinnick, winner of the 2011 Montreal Poetry Prize and the 2012 Cardiff International Poetry Prize, and author of The Blue Plateau, Fire Diary and nine other acclaimed works of poetry and prose. AWAW’s four editions have been received very favourably, with support from Lisa Dempster (Emerging Writers’ Festival director), Philip Rainford (Fellowship of Australian Writers president), and authors Arnold Zable and Delia Falconer, all of whom have written forewords for the book. The critic Matthew Lamb, in The Australian, commended the “invaluable service” AWAW offers to the literary community, while, in The Age, reviewer Lorien Kaye celebrates that AWAW gives readers a chance “to value these winners”. Similar sentiments are expressed by author Irma Gold, who wrote in Overland that AWAW is “a must read”; The Age critic Cameron Woodhead, who noted that “some of the contributions possess startling power”; and critic Patrick Allington, who praised the “impressive new voices” and “energy and inventiveness” collected in the book. The 2012 edition will feature the work of both emerging and established authors, including Ron Pretty, Susan McCreery, Lisa Jacobson, Kevin Gillam, Laura Jean McKay and A. S. Patric. Competitions appearing in the 2012 edition include: Lord Mayor’s Creative Writing Awards Sydney Poetry Prize The Age Short Story Competition Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize Katharine Susannah Prichard Awards Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize ANU Short Story Competition

Autobiography: gener Colin Macleod
Back in Print Discharged from National Service in the navy in the 1950s, the young Colin Macleod was bored witless as a clerk. He sought adventure as a patrol officer in the Northern Territory. From Hermannsburg, Narwietooma and the Pintubi people to Wave Hill and the Gorinji people to Bathurst Island and the Tiwi people, patrol officer Macleod did the best that he could for the dispossessed indigenous peoples. He experienced it all at first hand, the squalor of the Blacks' camps on the fringes of the big cattle stations, the limbo status of the Yellafellas, the Myalls, the prosecution of Whites who flogged Blacks, the sexual exploitation of part‐ Aboriginal children now known as 'the stolen generation'

More than three million people across the world were moved and inspired by Shaun Wilson‐Miller’s tragic farewell message on YouTube. Shaun had undergone two heart transplants and spent most of his life in hospital, only to be diagnosed with chronic heart rejection shortly after his seventeenth birthday. In the face of this heartache, Shaun had one message, “stay positive and live life to the full.” This is his untold story: the pawn in the middle of a war between his parents; the victim of assault and landing the girl of his dreams. Serious health issues never held Shaun back from pursuing a career in television and film he inspired and motivated all who met him – famous boxers, actors, elite sportsmen and contestants on the The Voice. Part mystic, part practical joker, part football nutter – Shaun was a remarkable young man who touched millions with his footprint on their hearts.

SAVE TIME AND MONEY BY TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH! Having treated thousands of clients over more than a decade and supervised hundreds of trained physiotherapists in one of Australia’s leading health care groups, few people are better positioned to give advice on physical health and wellness than International Author and Speaker Jason Smith. Written in plain English, this unique book will change your life by combining timeproven and medically sound principles with an innovative philosophy of selfempowerment. You will Discover: • The secret to wellness is a lot more than being “uninjured” or pain‐free • Crucial health advice that doctors and therapists rarely have time to share with you • The importance of physical movement to living longer and enjoying life • Innovative strategies to reduce pain immediately and make a fast recovery • How to assess which treatment options are best for you • Proven approaches to achieving lasting results from each physiotherapy session, and not ‘lose the benefits’ over time • How to save time and money by not becoming dependent on your practitioner About the Author Jason Smith, founded Back In Motion (BIM) physiotherapy in 2000 as a small in‐home practice, using a single‐car garage as his consulting room. The BIM Health Group has since expanded exponentially, to become Australia’s largest physiotherapy franchise, with more than 50 locations and over 300 employees across three states – Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. The Back In Motion Story ‐ A Simple Philosophy Back in Motion Health Group first emerged as a concept or desire to operate a first class physiotherapy practice which offered clients' holistic solutions, sustainable outcomes, genuine and ongoing after‐care , and was altogether encapsulated in relating to people with prestige and dignity. The more traditional physiotherapy practice models observed at the time certainly did not reflect these found values or philosophies of care. Back in Motion Health Group commenced as a small practice in the home of founders, Jason and Paulina Smith, in September 1999. Their early success resulted in quick growth and by April 2000 had moved the practice from their home into more suitable commercial medical facilities. An expert and committed team soon gathered around Jason and Paulina as they focused on emerging as one of the choice physiotherapy providers and employers in our industry.

Going Down Swinging
Island is firing this year! Our writers and artists continue to receive recognition beyond the pages of our magazine. Most recently Pip Stafford, featured artist of 129, has been awarded the MONA scholarship. Social media is abuzz with Island activity and our new blog Islandia is taking off like a crazy energetic firecracker with inexhaustible gunpowder. In Island 130: TASMANIA NOW, you’ll find a considered and entertaining overview about the hottest state in Australia right now. The MONA backlash and Tasmania’s cultural cringe is torn apart by subversive culture columnist Rebecca Fitzgibbon; inaugural recipient of the Sydney Myer Creative Fellowship and director of the Inglis Clark Centre for Civil Society at UTAS Nastasha Cica examines Tasmania’s place in the world; and Tasmanian Times editor James Dryburgh asks why the Pontville Immigration Detention Centre was closed, despite widespread support.

Paper Tiger Media "Keri Glastonbury’s grit salute carries us along on a circumambient mash‐up full of verve, interest and laconic one‐liners. From Clovelly to Rome to Harajuku to Shimla, it’s a fun ride, bristling with songs and signposts, intent on ‘minor insurgency’. Glastonbury is a generous guide, crafting ‘a movement vocabulary’ that is both resilient and attuned to loss, butch and tender: ‘There’s so much more to nostalgia / than this lampoon’. " ‐ Kate Lilley Excerpt from the book At Least She’s Protecting My (Something): Or you’d be all over me right? Not so, but so prickly cheeked gorgeous. I never thought of myself as a Queensland‐ type person (despite the blonde hair) or a poetry‐ type person (sorry, the designer is still rendering the font).

Busybird Publishing The short story has become an unappreciated commodity in Australian publishing. Many existing journals are compilations of non fiction, poetry, and a smattering of literary fiction. [untitled] is an anthology exclusively of short stories. We hope it'll help re‐ popularise the Australian short story market, as well as offer a market for mainstream fiction. Released bi‐annually, [untitled] also looks at promoting the work of emerging writers. Submissions are open to all. If you're wondering what we're looking for, simply a good story. Grab a copy of [untitled] to see what we've published, or take a look at the [untitled] website. [untitled] is a desperately‐needed place and space for short stories at a time in Australia when most publications are eschewing that form. Courageous, curious and an admirable project. ‐ Kalinda Ashton, The Danger Game

A New Revolutionary Way Of Thinking Author and spiritual teacher Shamarie provides a fresh approach to spiritualism and personal growth, rather than just re‐hashing what has already been said in the past. If you are tired of the same old same old and are ready to expand into a brave new world of consciousness. This book will revolutionize the way you view your world and allow you to finally leave your old beliefs and their inherent limitations behind. You’ll discover: • The deeply imbedded mind structures that keep you stuck • How your language describes and creates your world • The reasons why no matter what you do you never feel good enough • The hidden psychology that prevents you from getting the life you want and deserve • How New Age thought keeps you locked into old thinking • Life changing information that will guarantee you will never look at your life the same way again • Why you keep doing the same things over and over and how you can break the habit
The Way of The Quest might be best called a 'motivational, self‐help novel'. Inspired in equal parts by the tales of King Arthur and Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist, it was written by Dr George Blair‐West as a fun, engaging story set as the era of the chivalrous knight is drawing to a close. It follows the life of a sixteen‐year‐old boy leaving his home in England and travelling to the magical Mont St Michel in search of both adventure and himself. Coming from wealth and privilege, instead of staying in Paris as instructed by Queen Elizabeth, he takes off to Mont St Michel to train under the greatest knight of all time. Francis Bacon, a real life figure, is no ordinary young man. Later in life he will be acclaimed as one of the geniuses of his age, but right now, he's a confused 16‐year‐old trying to find his way. He will go on to forever change the worlds of law, science and literature. This book follows the course of his fascinating life as meets the great teachers on The Mont who set him on his path… then he meets the gorgeous Marguerite ‐ the Juliet of his later writings. There are stories within stories, legends withing legends and layers upon layer

No punishment, bribes, or consequences. Is it possible to parent this way? Won’t the kids turn out demanding and naughty? How will they learn about the real world? How will they learn to do what is right? In a time when society tells us to punish and manipulate our children in order to get them to conform, treating children with respect, and honouring their natural needs, is a foreign concept. Packed full of the very latest research, Scott delivers a timely message about the importance of nurturing using progressive parenting, and urges us that society has no more urgent task. This book is a complete reversal of the parenting wisdom millions have known and followed for decades. It shows parents that they can raise healthy, happy, responsible kids without resorting to coercive parenting methods, and provides them with clarity about what to do instead. Whilst other parenting manuals focus on training or moulding children into compliance, the Progressive Parenting approach focuses on looking behind children’s behaviour, meeting needs, and ultimately moving closer to connection and away from control.

More Than Just Talk
This is a story of local politics and community activism. It's a true story, as objective as I can make it from my personal point of view, and I do have a point of view on the state of local democracy and the role of citizens in the decisions that affect them. More than just the local council, it's about a community and conflict fostered within a ruling mentality of divide and conquer. The story is one of disillusionment, disregard for fairness and civility, and the struggle for change. The story is specific to a location but it is universal. It is of a certain time‐frame but it is timeless. Without doubt the events described ‐ the absurd, the comic and the tragic ‐ take place to a greater or lesser extent within the 560 Councils around the country. Self‐interest, deal making and Machiavellian scheming are the high dramas of small town everyday life. A positive case for change in the way we do local democracy is presented, with community and council working together in partnership. A practical foundation for Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

Spineless Wonders
Mary Manning’s exciting debut collection of short stories includes a Goth clutching a homemade tart on a Melbourne tram, an old lady camping out on a medium strip and a wife who follows her trainspotting husband into his dreams. A person fitting on a suburban train challenges the equilibrium of urbane commuters and the weird guy jotting down words in the mall is about to commit an unspeakable crime. In Manning’s fractured future worlds, sexual partners are purchased and returned like commodities and language, culture and religion are all dealt a body blow. Expertly crafted and highly imaginative, the stories explore alienation, criminal behaviour and love. There is also theme of longing in these stories—for connection and understanding in a world where relationships and people are variously damaged. Mary Manning writes with compassion, linguistic flair and a particular brand of wicked humour.

Humans, with the intent of demons, had displayed hate born out of wickedness. Vengeful, transparent phantoms surrounded the child. They were there to protect him! A silent cry for vengeance and a demand for justice seemed to emanate from the apparitions. "Rise my beloved cygnet. Raise your sword" Like a butterfly fluttering above the cascade of a waterfall, Gullvieg's voice floated gently in the wind. "The power of the Creator inhabits your soul, the love of a mother flows in your veins . . . The Devil Incarnate has fallen! You have triumphed, eternal child"

A man resigned to a life without fulfilment or purpose. A woman desperate for adventure. Set against the tumultuous times of the Eureka uprising in Ballaarat, 1854, the two find themselves victims of an abduction. To escape could mean death. To hope for rescue is not an option. Together they must find a way to survive in an untamed land where bushrangers, dense forest and wild animals are only some of the dangers they must face. Can he find the courage to succeed? Can she realise her dreams of freedom? Will the ordeal forge a bond of love between them, or drive them apart? And above all, will they find their way home? Amanda Deed is the award‐winning author of The Game, and Ellenvale Gold.
BACKLIST TITLE November 2011 It is the time of Australia's harsh rogue‐filled goldrush of the 1850's when Miss Penelope Worthington suddenly finds herself orphaned, isolated and alone. With a large sheep station to run single‐handedly, she has little option but to enlist the aid of a mysterious, but sinister stranger. But who is the more treacherous? Gus ‐ the scruffy, trespassing, exconvict who co‐ incidentally shows up looking for work just when she desperately needs a farmhand or Rupert ‐ the handsome, wealthy neighbour who would willingly marry her at the drop of a hat and solve her apparent dilemma? Repeatedly, her faith is tested as she faces the unforgiving elements, deceit, lies and uncertainty. But where and how will it all end? But where and how will it all end? And will Penny's faith prevail?
Mattie was in love with Billy, but she was too young to wed. When Billy was conscripted to fight in Vietnam, they made a decision that affected their lives and their future. But forty‐six years later, is it time for things to be set right? Navy is a young woman who suddenly finds out about her family. But what could be a wonderful opportunity is met with jealousy and apprehension from her cousin, Brooke and her aunt Connie, especially with handsome Aidan around. Each must look past their struggles and find forgiveness and trust, and perhaps even love. This absorbing family drama, set in South Australia's beautiful McLaren Vale wine region, is written by four of Australia's outstanding Christian fiction authors who have brought you bestselling and award‐winning novels.

But her dreams of a future are shattered when her son’s security is challenged, and the rich and privileged Texan, Nate Hollingsworth sails into the bay. Now Ani must not only fight for her son, but also a growing attraction she has to the one type of man she loathes. Nate is on a mission – to fulfill his mother’s last wish, and change his life. Dropping anchor in the idyllic Resolution harbor, he didn’t anticipate becoming involved in illegal fishing, a murder, or an unexpected attraction to the most exasperating woman he has ever met. The Australian tropical Island, Resolution, sets the scene again for adventures, dreams, and new beginnings. A New Resolution is the final book in the Resolution trilogy, following Back to Resolution and Beyond Resolution.

There was a flash of lightning. The wind screeched. And the thunder roared … Discover what happens when Boo, the owlet, leans out of the hollow to see what the noise is all about. Boo and the Big Storm is a profoundly moving story about compassion. Wendy Lawrence's text is poignant in its simplicity and powerful in the message it carries: That a love and an understanding of one's local natural environment can have a far‐reaching healing effect on all involved. Glen Vause's illustrations compliment the words perfectly with their rich use of texture and lighting, and they create, for the reader, the irresistible

A reclusive old man had to die before something of major proportions happened in the small seaside town of Calder Cove. Over a long and extended period, a series of weird and rather extraordinary events occur, most of which are hidden from view behind a construction of tall screens. Then, with a very grand and rather bizarre opening, a strange and mysterious castle is revealed, a castle that seemed to have appeared out of the darkness and silence of nowhere. Was it magic? the townsfolk wondered. Or was it something more sinister? In time it is made known that the massive grey edifice is nothing more than a school. But when the exclusively invited children finally step inside, the huge doors are locked securely behind them, creating a strict division between the world of their families and the castle. Everything that was once a part of everyday life becomes a thing of the past and the new students are thrown, without warning, into the unknown. It is with great trepidation they begin to question these changes and ask... is this place really a school?
Unhappy with the allocation of presents one year, Mario, seven years old, decides to go to the North Pole to visit Santa and tell him which kids are good and which kids aren't. His friend Sarah decides to go along and, making secret travel arrangements, they head off on a brave but imprudent adventure where they discover that the Christmas regime, with all its little helpers, runs deeper than their young minds previously imagined. Elves, dwarves, reindeer and flying sleighs, all is unveiled in this unlikely story of entrapment an escape, where goodies live and baddies die, answering the whos, the hows and the whys about Santa Claus and his spooky, undisclosed meaning of Christmas.

Shredding Snow is a tale about a tail, an action mouse tail that is. Maiso the Action Mouse and his radical buddies are back to provide another awesome adventure, as seen in previous titles Skate Session and Surf Safari. When the humans go away, the creatures will play and there is no exception here. Active Kids Books have again developed a formula that encourages kids to read, as it continues with its fun rhyming formula and captivating authentic illustrations that kids relate to. The young reader associates with the characters and enjoys the self determination, the creativity and the joy that Maiso, Strider and Carlie express. But where could the fun young creatures go ‘shredding snow’ when they are restricted to their beach shake?

Green Barrow Publishing Reprinted Sir Charles Kingsford Smith would rather you called him Smithy. He saw himself as an ordinary sort of bloke and always found it easy to mix with ordinary people. But he well and truly earned his reputation as one of the greatest trail blazing aviators in the world during the 1920s and 1930s.

Tenth Eline Pty Ltd Back In Stock Rara the elephant was born deep in the jungle of Thailand. Her name, Rara, means 'naughty girl' in Thai. Yet little Rara was only sometimes naughty ‐ but she was always cheeky. That's what made Rara, Rara! This is the story of Rara, and her early days with Mamma in the jungle, followed by her happy years working as a resort elephant and her delight in playing with the tourist children. It is a gentle story, and the first book to be beautifully written and illustrated by Cathy Scollo. Also available in HB, ISBN 9781921756405, A$24.95
