Words From The Wise Australian authors and readers buying books – a perspective. One of our “cross platform” authors is Ber Carroll and her work “Worlds Apart” – if you want to find out more about Ber Carroll have a look at www.bercarroll.com This story is how a post office in Ireland has made her book a regional bestseller. Ber is a local from Blarney in Ireland and when the local post master heard about the new book the enquiry was how to get stock to Blarney. This title sits on the Lightning Source Print on Demand system and the first 40 copies were printed in Milton Keynes (via LSI) and delivered to the post office. Better news was that another 40 copies was needed shortly after. Why talk about this? Well, Australian authors works are pursed globally and the protocols for this sort of opportunity are in place. We are hopeful that Ber Carroll’s next work will be with us for Mother’s Day 2015 and we can deliver across any platform that the consumer chooses. My Brother Jack and why the Government needs to keep funding the ABC. This weekend I was treated to a broadcast from RN about George Johnston’s novel My Brother Jack – why the interest? I lived for a great period of my life in Glenhuntly Road, near the corner of Kooyong Road, in the top floor of a retail premises; my Nanna ran a pseudo boarding house in Hopetoun Street, Elsternwick. Around the corner from our shop was the Caulfield Repatriation Hospital. My first book trade job was with William Collins and its famed Chairman “Billy” Collins. My Brother Jack, George Johnston / Charmian Clift were always very close to the hearts and minds of Collins' employees. Over those early years I read the David Meredith trilogy as well as later many of the Charmian Clift books set in Hydra. If there had been a Booker in the days of the 60’s Johnston would clearly have won. The program mentioned people I had not thought about for many years as well my childhood in My Brother Jack territory. Which made me realise we do need ABC funding to bring these age durable people and books back to us. Maybe one day a learned person may draw parallels with George on Hydra and Richard Flanagan’s Booker acceptance speech – one was heard all around the world, the other to the attendees in a bar in the Greek Islands. The other to ponder is that where would George Johnston be on a retrospective CAL list of author dues – I think George would have been at the very top.

Amazon and local taxes and consumers. Not wanting to attract attention could I call Amazon the “book kindergarten for consumers”. So a business creating a consumer bank is bad for business? Well not really as how else do readers connect with so many genres and so many authors. The fact that Amazon ignores paying taxes in Australia may come under the so called 'Google tax' where the G8 or G20 (some group with an alpha plus a numeric) play big brother to attempt tax raising due to the global tax system being broken. Which multinationals don’t use tax minimisation? All the Apple lovers should abandon their “i” this and “i” that consumer non durable products. I can’t prove this next thought; I think the entire length of Highway 1 around Australia could be covered with “i” product – however we vote with your voice before the most conspicuous way – stop buying from them. The hard fact is that with the grinding down of tax revenues the tax base has to shift or grow by the use of the people’s tax – GST. I have on other occasions opined that we will end up with 15% as our GST – what then? How did our six months finish? We wrote the numbers for the bank last April/May and most of them have eventuated. Our bestselling books for the year were not new books; great as the top seller is firm sale and the next has a return rate of less than 1%: -Secret Girls Business +5000 copies -Weed Foragers Handbook +4000 copies Best wishes for a safe and peaceful Christmas and a generous compliance with 2015 DJ

The happy routine life of two Perth teenagers is shattered one November day in 1950 when they are accused of theft. With evidence mounting against them and fearing a jail term they run from the security of their suburban lifestyle and disappear into the outback where they discover an Australia and a way of life they never imagined existed. Evading all attempts to find them they meet a happy-go-lucky Irish prospector, team up with a legendary Aboriginal drover who mentors them on a cattle drive from the Northern Territory down the Finke River trail into South Australia and make an unlikely friend of an Afghan cameleer, finally ending up in the harsh outback opal mining environment of Coober Pedy. It is story packed with surprises, interesting characters, humour, warmth and adventure, as the two mates triumph over adversity to discover their purpose in life.

“A tour deforce yarn — crisp and lively writing at its best …” — Graeme Bond (Birdsong Press) “A refreshing, delightful and thoroughly Australian book, full of adventure, courage, humour and suprises. It made me review my own life and agree- wryly - that there is indeed “no turning back”. And it's a great 'feel good' "Rosemary Crooks, BA

Colonel Ian Hutchison was a revered soldier and one of the great figures in Australian military history. As Commanding Officer of the 2/3 Australian Infantry Battalion in the Battle of Eora Creek on the Kokoda Trail, he was thrust unexpectedly into command yet inspired his men to a smashing victory which was the turning point in the Kokoda Campaign. He continued to lead in further victories at Oivi, Soputa and Sanananda. In this important book, we learn the truth about the Battle of Eora Creek Ridge (‘the Lost Battlefield’) and why the magnitude of the victory has been covered up until now. What is the secret of Eora Creek that still haunts the Kokoda Campaign and is of national and international significance? We also learn of the influences and events which shaped Hutchison and prepared him for command in both the Second World War and the Korean War. Kokoda Secret examines Hutchison’s career from the time he joined the Militia as a regimental cadet at the age of 16 in 1929 until his retirement in 1963, during which period his career mirrored the development of the twentieth‐ century Australian Army. Using ground‐breaking research, extensive private papers and detailed interviews, this unique biography provides a compelling portrait of Colonel Ian Hutchison and a definitive study of battalion command in war and peace. In particular, it is a must‐read for anyone interested in the truth of the Kokoda Campaign of 1942. It is also of immense significance in shedding new light on other key issues and campaigns including the Syrian Campaign, the Aitape‐ Wewak Campaign, the War Crime Trials in New Guinea, and the static phase of the Korean War. Over thirty years after Hutchison’s death, this book sets the record straight, and gives this great Australian the credit he deserves. 'Ian Hutchison was a very good tactician. We were very lucky to have him as our CO at that critical time on Eora Creek Ridge. I had the greatest admiration, liking and respect for Colonel Hutchison. In fact, I could not speak highly enough of him.' - Bede Gooley, DCM, 2/3 Australian Infantry Battalion, Kokoda Campaign 1942 'Ian Hutchison was a brilliant Commanding Officer. He was a leader … He was completely ‘unflappable’ – cool as a cucumber under fire – he inspired confidence.' - Brigadier Derek Sharp, OBE Korean War Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

1914‐1918: The Eastern Front Inspired by true events, its action moving from the idyllic countryside ot Lithuania to St Petersburg, Warsaw, Berlin and New York, Feet of Wax depicts the separation and trials of two young people and their families during World War 1. Entrusted with the care of her frail father and taking refuge with a wealthy uncle in St Petersberg, Wanda falls in love with George, a radical student from Warsaw. Conscripted into the tsarist infantry, George is caught up in revolutionary currents at the front, while Wanda witnesses a city turning from fashionable glitter to peaceful protest, then revolution, as the effects of war and hunger set in. When the German front advances through Polish and Lithuanian lands, Russia's Empire is in meltdown. Lenin, the leader of the Bolsheviks, and Pilsudski, the leader of the Poles, are poised to make their mark on history. Wanda and George are forced to decide: become Bolsheviks, or flee through a landscape ravaged by war. Joanna Hempel ‐ formerly one of Australia's leading playwrights for young people ‐ brings her skills as a dramatist to Feet of Wax, a novel informed by family journals. Based on her grandparents' lives during the disintergration of the Russian Empire and the re‐birth of Poland, it reveals Eastern Europe as it changes forever.

A photographic voyage through the islands of Bass Strait and around Tasmania. Peter Hendrie sailed to destinations that are rarely visited such as the Kent Group in Bass Strait and the Davey River Gorges in the South‐West wilderness. The book is a compilation of photographs from the perspective of the water and from the air of the coastal regions, islands and river systems of Tasmania. Getting together a crew that at times comprised experienced sailors and other times complete novices he sailed from his base in Melbourne to King and Flinders islands, as well as the little known Kent Island Group in Bass Strait. Gaining experience and confidence with every voyage into the notoriously gale prone waters of Bass Strait he sailed down Tasmania’s isolated west coast and into Macquarie and Bathurst Harbours in the South‐West wilderness and up the Gordon, Franklin and Davey Rivers. Sailing across the bottom of Tasmania through the waters known as the Roaring 40’s and into the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, past the stunning cliffs of the Tasman and Freycinet Peninsulas he captured images of a side of Tasmania rarely seen. Unmarked and forgotten graves, an old pickle jar, a stamp shoe worn to a slipper, abandoned mines in Victoria and remotest Queensland, floods and rebellion. All are stops and clues along the way as Victor Bibby treads in the footsteps of a gold mining pioneer to discover long‐lost relatives and the truths about his own family. Bringing alive an historical account of life on the goldfields and events that made colonial history. A fascinating tale of a toolmaker from industrial England who created a new life in Australia as an engineer, innovator and gold miner before struggling against the odds to find fame and fortune as a mining pioneer in the Malayan jungle. About the Author Victor Bibby is a retired engineer and this is his first book. He started his career in the Australian Army as a boy apprentice soldier, became an officer, studied, married, had a family and saw more of the world than he expected. He retired as a major after a service distinguished by its ordinariness. Another career in commercial aviation followed and he saw even more of the world, acquiring an attachment to Cornwall without realising the county's wheal (the Cornish name for a mine) houses were signposts to his past. He returned to Australia in the aftermath of the Hawke and Keating years to a changed country and continued working in aviation and saw even more of the world, much of it through aeroplane and hotel windows. Following his last retirement he decided to research his ancestry, which has since become a consuming passion. He lives in Geelong, Victoria, married to his dear and long suffering partner while continuing to look for a place to call home. He has four grandchildren. Based on a true story, A Different Earth is an epic tale of a resilient pioneering woman. On the threshold of starvation when the potato blight hits Cornwall, Jane Dunstan decides to rescue her family from desperate poverty and her husband, Richard, from the dreadful conditions in the mines. She successfully applies for a 'free passage' to migrate to South Australia with their seven children aged from one to twelve. After suffering appaling living conditions in the cramped steerage of the ship and the challenges of the sea during the three month journey, the family, on arrival in South Australia in 1849, travel 100 miles north of Adelaide by bullock wagon to the Burra copper mines. At Burra they live in the underground dugout in the banks of the Burra Creek and Richard, with his three boys, work in the mine. To jane it's a dramatic time, with floods, a new baby born underground and the tragic loss of her husband and two daughters. On the discovery of gold in Victoria in 1851, Jane hires a bullock dray and driver to take her remaining six children on a corageous six-week, 550 mile overland trek to the Victorian goldfields. The story describes the difficulties of locating and traversing the trail, the workings and idiosyncrasies of the bullock team and its driver, Red, adapting to living in the bush, obtaining bush tucker and dealing with pests and hazards along the way. On arriving at the diggings Jane is horrified by what she sees but ultimately remarries and has three more babies, bringing her total issue to eleven. She eventually has fifty-nine grandchildren.

Available Now If you've ever been involved in a petty squabble and found yourself before the courts you might want to read this astonishing story. A dispute over $115, with a nudge from the legal system, took on a life of its own and over ten years involved every court in the country including the High Court of Australia. Tired of pedestrian legal advice and ballooning costs, reluctant hero, Alan Manly, a self‐acknowledged manic obsessive compulsive former postman, former television repairman and would‐be entrepreneur with a ninth grade education, sacked his lawyers and took on the system. In this thrilling account he finds himself accused, sued, defamed, assaulted ‐ stumbling over shams, sexual predators and suicide, unemployed and teetering on the edge of bankruptcy ‐ his life virtually a smoking ruin. In this David and Goliath rematch he exposes the legal system that so easily crushes the innocent. Sometimes hilarious, even ridiculous, but a true Australian story. About the Author Alan grew up on a small farm on the outskirts of Bacchus Marsh in the North West of Victoria. His family tried to make a living from the land, but his father was in poor health and the family struggled to survive. Alan attended the local state school, as did its most famous graduate, the Man Booker prize winner, Peter Carey. After dropping out in Year Nine Alan worked as a postman before securing an apprenticeship as a television repairman. Unfortunately, his employer went broke, was convicted of fraud and committed suicide. But the great apprenticeship system swung into action and Alan was offered a job as a computer engineer in Melbourne. After a stint in research and development he switched to sales and marketing and was hired by the Digital Equipment Corporation. After several years with Digital, Alan became involved with a company which was developing its own software products and it was during this period of his career that he became embroiled in the legal nightmare which is the subject of this book. Since then Alan has successfully embarked on a new career in the education sector. He lives in Sydney with his wife and son. Inlumino Enterprises

Do you ever give in and buy your kids stuff they've been nagging you for... only to find that they're still not satisfied? Do you sometimes worry that children are growing up in a narcissistic and materialistic world? Do you want to teach your children how they can focus more on what they are thankful for, and less on the negatives in their lives? Children are not always very good at saying thank you or feeling grateful. That is because none of us is born understanding gratitude ‐ we have to learn and develop it. The good news? There is actually a lot we can do to help nurture thankfulness in our children, and Gratitude is packed with practical, common‐sense tips and hints that have been shown to work. It offers a positive new approach to nurturing thankfulness in children by making gratitude an everyday habit of family life. Instilling gratitude in our children is about so much more than politeness. Gratitude is linked to greater happiness, a more positive outlook on life, stronger social bonds and support networks, and higher achievement. This book shows how fostering gratitude in our children helps them develop the skills they need for fulfilling and successful futures ‐ in their studies, personal lives, and careers. "Thanks, Danni, for being such a positive champion and guide for parents and teachers to help them build gratitude and thoughtfulness in our children so that we can create a more caring and compassionate world for all." ‐ Maggie Dent, parenting and resilience educator, and author "A must‐have for every parent's bookshelf." ‐ Rebecca Sparrow, columnist, author, and speaker

In April, 1866, at the height of the Black Hawk Wars, Mormon settlers in the new village of Circleville, Utah, took a number of Paiute Indians hostage and subsequently murdered twenty‐six men, women and children. Sue Jensen Weeks' great‐great‐grandfather, James Tillman Sanford Allred, was one of those responsible. Her great‐aunt later married one of the few Paiute survivors, David Monson. Weaving together the strands of family history, letters, diaries, eye‐witness testimonials, and reminiscences, Sue Jensen Weeks traces a path through the shadows and pain of one of the more significant events in the near annihilation of Native American peoples in Utah. Sue Jensen Weeks was born in Provo, Utah and lives now in Salt Lake City.

I loved her concept of us as the Arab Club. She explained how, to Arab men, four is the ideal number of wives. One wife means not enough sex for the man and too much sex for the wife. Two wives will fight and if there are three wives two of them will gang up on the third. Four wives is the Goldilocks formula. A joke, a conversation piece (and we're not wives) but it gave us a harmonious role, an immediate relationship with each other. Jeff, middle‐aged and widowed, finds himself simultaneously involved with four strong‐willed women ‐ Bev, Frances, Lee and Rhoda. He tells each of them of his involvements and, to his horror, they want to meet. As a result, they become friends and start managing his life. As Jeff becomes peripheral in their relationships he learns more about gender issues than he ever wanted to know. About the Author Tim Lowe grew up in Melbourne and graduated in medicine in 1981. During the 1980s he worked in war‐torn Belfast and in Australia as an isolated rural GP. He started writing following some traumatic experiences during this time. His first novel, Equinox of Tears, was published in 2003. Tim now works at a community health centre in inner suburban Melbourne and lives between Melbourne and the Western District of Victoria where he produces his own wine and cheese.

George Dyuŋgayan was a powerful Nyigina lawman from the Roebuck Plains (east of Broome). Over the course of a life spanning much of the twentieth century, the spirit of his late father visited him in dreams and gave him the seventeen verses of the The Bulu Line. Full of magic and local history, the poems describe journeys with ancestors and spirit beings, encounters with rainbow serpents and ferocious storms, and explore the vast distances of the West Kimberley landscape. A pioneering experiment in contemporary Australian literature, George Dyuŋgayan's The Bulu Line is the translation of a richly textured oral poetry into printed form. Rather than reduce the songpoetry to short, static lines of verse, Stuart Cooke has assembled a series of startling multi‐vocal texts that invite a plethora of never‐ending readings. Just like Cooke, you can also become a translator, and contribute to the performance of the poetry. In this way, writes Cooke in the introduction, we "let the force of the Bulu keep rolling." This book showcases the complexity and power of one of the world's oldest and greatest literary traditions, and provides testament to its remarkable capacity for ongoing evolution. "I cannot over‐emphasise the importance of this kind of work." ‐Stephen Muecke (from the Preface) "Stuart Cooke's translation and arrangement of George Dyuŋgayan's The Bulu Line is a work of deep and subtle artistry. It brings a songline to readers as only a poet with strong connections to Aboriginal place and poetics can do." ‐Deborah Bird Rose

Vanishing Point is a crossover verse novel that poses the question of how individuals can learn to be comfortable in their own bodies. Nineteen‐year‐old Diana Warren suffers from anorexia and bulimia. She faces a challenging situation at home with dysfunctional parents and a Down‐syndrome brother, which causes her to seek refuge in female role models in the mythic past. An Irish racehorse trainer who reignites her childhood love of horses causes her to question everything. Will she choose life or death? And what happens when that choice is taken out of her hands? 'This crossover poetry novel is written convincingly in the voice of a teenage girl with anorexia. As a narrative, it is page‐turning, as a series of cameos and incidents it has a touching lyrical intimacy.' ‐ Jan Owen 'Kroll experiments at the nexus of lyric and narrative, cumulatively taking a story forward while also offering the reader associative insight into the complex emotional life of a young woman.' ‐ Rose Lucas, Australian Book Review

Terra Bravura, began as short text messages sent to David Musgrave from the desert on the way to Broken Hill. He later described their poetic form thuis:'The poems are terrific. Vox clamantis in desierto. The lines are dense and staccato, with a kind of pinpoint‐accurate mouthfulness of sound ‐ hard to describe, but it seems to me that the rhythm is what makes it work so distinctively. There are words that leap out at you ‐ 'the eagle, canopic on tar, atop kangaroo smear, thrown furred corsets of white bone, confetti of raod crows chroming a black storm'

‐ this is inventive, musical and harsh, accurate and rich, with a vein of visionary dream, which I like.' The landscape of feral goats, idiosyncratic human markers, failed fences, becomes the distorted and detail‐selective realm of memory. It was written in 2009, when the poet's father began to lose his memory; it is an exploration of oral tradition, the stuff of generational infamy, the coming, by ship in 1855, to Australia . Tender poems on the death of his wife, witty Philip Larkin apercus, meditations on the spiritual need of Australians for Europe, hard‐eyed satire as a political fixer dismisses as out‐of‐date the instruments of torture in the Tower of London: John Upton's range is broad and his poetic skills accomplished. There's also wit, along with rollicking humour and love of the absurd, with jealous Othello transposed into Sydney's posh Eastern Suburbs, and a defrocked priest with a gambling habit sacked and clerking at the TAB.

This New & Selected Poems is a substantial and long‐awaited compilation from one of Australia's most accomplished poets, a retrospective spanning more than thirty years. The New Poems section, 'Towards the Equator', represents Alex Skovron's sixth book‐length collection and signals a return to the formal variety that has been a hallmark of his work. As always, a distinct Eurocentric sensibility sits alongside an engagement with Western art and culture. All six collections are characterized by close attention to craft, versatility of tone and technique, and a seriousness of intent seasoned at times with wry humour or playful wit. About the author Alex Skovron is the author of five collections of poetry and a prose novella. His work has been published widely, and the numerous readings he has given include appearances in China, Serbia, India, Ireland, and on Norfolk Island. Among awards for his poetry are the Wesley Michel Wright Prize, the John Shaw Neilson Award, the Australian Book Review Poetry Prize, and for his first book, The Rearrangement (1988), the Anne Elder and Mary Gilmore awards. His novella, The Poet, was joint winner of the FAW Christina Stead Award for fiction, and has been translated into Czech. The Attic, a selection of his poetry with French translations, was published in 2013. Alex was born in Poland, lived briefly in Israel, and migrated to Australia in 1958, aged nearly ten. He is based in Melbourne and works as a freelance editor. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

Available Now Susie Kliman seeks to reframe the experience of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment with her new book, One Breast, Two Breast. Susie presents her life-changing experience in a gentle picture-book format, using the humour and positive language that she found helped her to make each day more hopeful. With beautiful illustrations by established artist Esther Erlich, the book takes the mechanics of diagnosis and treatment and transforms them into a light but important read, filled with hope and humour. Though not aimed specifically at children, this non-threatening and warm approach may help children whose families are involved with cancer to gain some understanding and insight, in a safe and positive way. About the Author Susie has in her working life been both a devoted primary school teacher and in recent years, a respected social worker, but has always kept her love of writing. She has been composing poetry and prose for most of her life and currently assists with one of Australia’s leading heritage glass conservators, documenting stained glass windows and preparing written reports. Susie has been self-publishing children’s books for her extended family for some years and hopes now to make her books more widely available. After undergoing treatment for breast cancer in 2009, she reassessed what she wanted to be her life focus and realized the obvious choice was to devote her time to her life-long love of writing. Jonathon’s Thongs, the story of a small boy who discovers something really mesmerizing about a pair of thongs, is her first commercial literary venture.

Santa, Mrs. Claus and the elves haven't always lived at the North Pole. They moved from country to country as Santa discovered that it's not easy training skunks, elephants, camels and kangaroos to fly his sleigh. About the Author: Fred Strassberg, a father of three and grandfather of four, lives in the Northern Suburbs of Sydney with his wife, Catherine, and his dog, a stumpy‐tailed English Pointer. Fred is trying to teach the dog to find where his golf balls have disappeared to in the bush; so far, the dog has failed to find even one ball. When not playing golf, Frank is writing stories about spiders, elephants and his favourite person, Mr Santa Claus. Fred has believed in the Claus family ever since he received his first Christmas gift, a puppy dog by the name of Margaret Peggy O'Neil. In fact, all his children, grandchildren, wife and the dog believe in Santa Claus. Fred also believes in left‐handed chalk, that the world is flat and round, and the country that controls gravity, controls the world. About the Illustrator: Graeme was born in country NSW, Australia. He loves drawing. He used to draw in Maths, Science, English, Agriculture and History classes at school. Other than that, he was generally a good boy, and Santa always left presents for him under the Christmas tree. Graeme sincerely hopes that presents will still be under the tree for him this Christmas after Santa sees the illustrations he drew in Fred's book. Graeme found that drawing Santa, the Elves and especially Mrs Claus (who has red hair, like Graeme) was a blast, and the illustrator hopes to work with Fred again.

Holidaying at one of his favourite destinations, Tzar, his brother Ziggy and their very good friend Coco, head out on their usual morning burn up the beach. Dejected that his fun‐filled days are coming to an end, he slips back to the beach house to get his ball in the hopes that it might cheer him up. As he tears up the beach to catch his ball before it lands, he sees something moving out of the corner of his eye. Concealed by the thick bushes, the thing shoots out as if jet‐propelled and suddenly stops in the middle of the beach. Instinctively, Tzar puts on the brakes, leaving a three‐metre skid mark in the soft sand. Pulling up just short of the thing, Tzar is completely frozen in terror. Eyes bulging, he comes face to face with a very, very, very large saltwater crocodile. This book is suitable for children of all ages and is particularly useful as an early childhood learning resource, as a number of life lessons can be gleaned from the story. Comprehensive teacher’s notes can be found at the back of book as a lesson plan for school. Catherine has completed her next book in the series, Adventures of Tzar the Paddington Poodle – Mr Claw. Keep an eye out for futures stories.
