February/March 2014 New Title Releases Good Goal, Son Those were the last words my father ever said to me. They have had more impact on my life than all the words that I’ve heard other people say, or I’ve read in books, or I’ve heard in songs. Those three words have powered my passion to succeed, no matter what.‐ CM Murphy CM Murphy’s blissful rural childhood of surfing, billy carting and ice‐hockey came to an abrupt halt after the untimely death of his father, theatrical agent Mark Murphy, when Chris was just 14. Murphy’s mother took over the family agency in Sydney, where Chris worked from the age of 17 until he went out on his own to become one of the world’s top music managers. Murphy is best known as being the manager of INXS from 1980–95, but also established the rooArt and Petrol record labels, was owner of one of Australia’s top radio stations, was a pioneer of digital radio and publishing as well as an innovator in the organic food industry. From high school dropout, to global media entrepreneur, this is the story of a driven, self‐made man who sets his sights on a goal, scores, then asks himself ‘What’s next?’. It was fascinating finding out how CM Murphy was made ‐ Zach Horowitz, CEO Universal Music publishing Chris Murphy is sort of like our evil alter ego. ‐ Michael Hutchence, INXS

Gambling is no longer just a harmless pastime; it’s a fully fledged killer. Problem gamblers are resorting to crime and suicide as a result of their compulsion, and former commercial lawyer and ‘The Age’ newspaper contributor, Tom McCarthy, takes a brave look at whether Australia is doing enough to prevent the ensuing devastation. In doing so, McCarthy deconstructs the industry to analyse the role of the gambling companies, the banks, the media, the Courts, and the governments, and determines which facet is most blameworthy for the current epidemic. McCarthy also refracts the damning statistics of this rampant industry through his own personal story, as well as that of various problem gamblers whose lives have been turned upside down by their respective gambling plights. In his quest for answers, McCarthy confers with the notorious anti-gambling crusader, the Reverend Tim Costello; prominent Victorian criminal lawyer, Bernie Balmer; and a former commercial bookmaker employee. The Dark Side of the Punt reveals gambling as firmly entrenched not only in our cultural psyche, but also our economy. Find out why, at least for the foreseeable future, problem gamblers –both made and potential –face a steep uphill battle. The book also contains a practical guide on how to stop, and accordingly, acts as an invaluable resource for problem gamblers (and friends and family), teachers and welfare workers, alike. Finally a book exploring the real truths about gambling in Australia! Well-written and highly fascinating. - Barry Everingham, journalist Tom McCarthy, former lawyer and comment journalist, is Melbourne based. In so doing he met a wide range of individuals, all with harrowing or uplifting stories to tell of ‘pride and prejudice’. Join Daniel as he encounters foul-mouthed police officers, transgender treasures, a billionaire's butler, gay jackaroos and straight lumberjacks looking to change. About the Author Daniel Witthaus is the author of Beyond ‘That’s So Gay!’ –Challenging homophobia in Australian schools and the Pride & Prejudice educational package. He continues to visit country communities to challenge homophobia one cuppa at a time, occasionally chatting with media outlets. The Sunlit Zone is a moving elegy of love and loss, admirable for its narrative sweep and the family dynamic that drives it. A risk‐taking work of rare, imaginative power. The Sunlit Zone combines the narrative drive of the novel with the perfect pitch of true poetry. A darkly futuristic vision shot through with bolts of light. Brilliant, poignant, disconcerting. - Adrian Hyland, author of Kinglake 350 and Diamond Dove This novel in verse, at once magical and irresistible, draws us in to a vivid future. In Lisa Jacobson's telling, the Australian fascination with salt water and sea change is made over anew. Romance holds hands with science and takes to the ocean. - Chris Wallace-Crabbe, author of The Domestic Sublime and By and Large.

Melbourne Books
This is a rare biography of the pioneering Australian author, Mary Gaunt. Born on the Victorian Goldfields in Chiltern in 1861, Mary Gaunt was well-educated and well-connected. She was a tomboy and a rebel – her father encouraged her, her mother disapproved. One of the first female students to attend the University of Melbourne, she wrote articles and stories in order to fund her travels. She trekked through the great mahogany forests of West Africa. She went to China in the chaos that followed the downfall of the Ch’ing dynasty, and narrowly avoided the marauding White Wolf. She proved that a woman could live by her pen in that era when nice women didn’t travel on their own. When war came, she was trapped behind enemy lines and never made it home to Australia. She died in occupied France in 1942. Her experiences were recorded in five pleasantly written travel books: Alone in West Africa (1912), A Woman in China (1914), A Broken Journey (1919), Where the Twain Meet (1922), Reflection - in Jamaica (1932). In 1929 she also published George Washington and the Men Who Made the American Revolution. Between 1895 and 1934, 16 novels or collections of short stories were published, mostly with love and adventure interests. Three other novels were written in collaboration with John Ridgwell Essex. A collection of interviews with Mary were published in the 1925 Girls' Own Annual under the headings "Pioneering for Women" parts I, II, and III, and "Strange Journeys I Have Made". About the Author Bronwen Hickman holds an MA in History at Victoria University, where she was awarded a Travelling Scholarship. She spent six weeks in England, France and Italy, researching the life of Mary Gaunt. She has taken part in seminars at the University of Melbourne and Victoria University, lectured at meetings and dinners, and entertained people with stories of Mary Gaunt. An evaluation of Australia’s water market as a new global standard for managing water resources. As the world’s driest continent – and with a rapidly growing population – Australia faces serious and urgent questions over the management of its water resources. The influences of climate change and global warming have already been felt and are not likely to diminish. Manabu Kondo believes water, the most vital of all our resources, needs to be nurtured, controlled and managed. A professor of theoretical economics at Japan’s Shiga University, Professor Kondo has spent considerable time studying the Australian situation while a visiting fellow at the Australian National University. He suggests the introduction and improvement of a water market is the key to becoming a sustainable society. To do otherwise is to threaten the survival of future generations. Professor Kondo uses penetrating economic analysis to call for policies that conserve the resource while ensuring economic growth. He examines for the first time the economic surplus effect of a water market and presents solutions that also consider the environmental, legal, agricultural, industrial, political and social implications. By defining and exploring the unique character of Australia’s water market Professor Kondo helps not only further mutual understanding between Japan and Australia but also provides a solution for the global society. This extremely detailed and thoroughly researched work is therefore essential reading for all concerned with the preservation and management of the world’s most vital resource.

February/March 2014 New Title Releases Nearly six years ago, after reading JRR Tolkien’s, Letters from Father Christmas to his children– the same letters that Tolkien had created for his own children, Dan Sanders sat down to write his own letters from Easter Bunny. But he was unable to complete the letter. Questions that had remained little known for millennia were raised in his mind, and thus begun his quest to discover the original meaning of the Easter tale. As a result of this research, Dan Sanders discovered the miracle of the Legends of Eostra– t h e Pagan Myths of the Spring Goddess throughout history, and began his own personal quest; he reimagined the earliest tale, what was called, the ‘Circle of Six’, the tale we now know as ‘Easter.’ Circle of Six: Emily’s Quest begins with the twin worlds of Earth and Annwyn who are in crisis: the seasons are out of balance and the worlds are dying. Their only hope is Daimon, an Athenian boy, and a small bird named Emily. Dragged through a portal between the two worlds, Emily almost dies in the snow. Eostra, Mother Spring, saves Emily’s life and transforms her into a snow rabbit. Now Emily’s quest begins, and with Daimon as her protector, she must decipher the prophecy and gather The Circle of Six, beings of great power called on in times of darkness upon the land. Together they must restore harmony to the Twin Worlds on the dawn of the spring morning.

CT (Charlie) Studd was a cricketer of the highest class. He played in the famed Test Match between England and Australia in 1882 that began the legend of the Ashes. From Ashes to Glory tells the story of this remarkable, dedicated man, and contains an authentic account of the 1882 Ashes Test, with all its drama. At the peak of his fame Studd retired from cricket to serve as a missionary in China. In 1885 he was one of seven men of wealth and privilege (‘The Cambridge Seven’), who shocked the nation, by giving up everything to take the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Chinese. While there he suffered much, but saw many people come to Christ. He later spent six years as a missionary in India, where he opened a school which is still serving the community today. In 1913 he went to Central Africa and became the founder of the mission organisation WEC International, which today has about 1,800 workers in 50 countries. Dr Evan Davies, former International Director of WEC International, recommends this book and reminds us that ‘Today thousands enjoy being part of God’s family because of Studd’s pioneer example.’
About the Author David Malcolm Bennett is a multi‐published author and evangelical theologian, who has the gift of doing thorough and painstaking research and presenting the results in a readable form. A dramaticised retelling of CT Studd, his cricket, his mission work and the decisions he made which helped form the mission organisation WEC International.

Growing a business is not unlike growing anything you might plant in your garden. The plant is first a seed and, from the time of planting, needs the right ground, water, nutrients and the natural warmth of the sun, in order that it might grow to become strong, healthy and productive. In order to ensure that it is receiving these components in the right balance, it also needs to be nurtured with care and attentiveness. This book will provide a template of what is required to grow a business. Once the principles of the seeds are understood, the business owner is well‐placed to accept any change of thinking that may be required and to implement changes in management into the business. The 10 seeds are Vision, Reality, Strategy, People Power, Communication, Measurement, Process, Accomplishment, Review and Appreciation.

February/March 2014 New Title Releases The Glove Box and other stories is a collection of short stories. This new release will be published in February, 2014 in paperback and ebook formats. 150 pp. Selected stories from the collection will also be available in mp3 and CD‐rom formats. In this collection, Vivienne Plumb is interested in women who are on the road. In the title story, ‘Glove Box’, an otherwise house‐bound and straight‐laced mother regularly takes off in the family’s old Jag for hours on end. Other characters hitchhike, crisscrossing the Australian continent, accepting lifts in trucks, cars and kombi vans with trees painted on them. They are running away from dysfunctional families; they are seeking adventure or just looking for work. There are women in transit and in transition ‐ stepping out of the traditional role ascribed to them and onto an open road. Plumb’s writing is wonderfully evocative – filled with luscious descriptions.

"We've decided for our Moomba performance we should only do songs we know." "As the band's musical director I would like to say I agree with you completely." A few songs into our Moomba set all was going well, then five songs in a row Terry felt an irresistible urge to play. Five songs none of us, Terry included, appeared to know. It took just shy of twelve hours for us to travel the first quarter of a mile that separates Reservoir from our destination of Cunnamulla. If we maintained that rate it wouldn't even take a full nine years to get there. Such was the life as a 'Hi‐Spender'. Welcome to the world everyman whitefella Johnny finds himself in as he struggles with the chaos of being a member of indigenous band 'Stoney Broke and The Hi‐ Spenders', a chaos matched by the tenuous state of his inner life. Australia in the '80s was a nation barely free from the shackles of its stultifying White Australia Policy. You were more likely to see a kangaroo bounding down a Melbourne street than you would an Aborigine. Stoney Broke and The Hi‐Spenders is the story of descendants of Aborigines who slipped in thousands of years before the White Australia policy became law, and one whitefella whose ancestors arrived many years later. Biography‐ Rocky Dabscheck was born in Melbourne's CBD. Tested at birth, and found to be allergic to money, his destiny was mapped out before he'd uttered his first word. A musician/songwriter he would be. Well known as the front person for 'Rocky and The Two Bob Millionaires', his guitar has taken the author to many surprising situations and places. Educated at Melbourne High, then over educated at Monash University (he was over education by the time he graduated) Rocky set about rendering his education virtually useless by pursuing life as a long haired musician ‐ which he continues to do. Rocky's interest in sport led to him being one of the pioneers of irreverent sports broadcasting. 'The Dropkicks,' born on Community radio, moved to 3UZ where his work with Brian Taylor and Sam Kekovich garnered a large following. Rocky's time with a Koori band, when it was rare to see a white musician in an indigenous band, is recounted in this novel. The author lives alone in Melbourne. Rocky spends many hours in 'Kumar Country' at The Thornbury Theatre, where he writes, consults and pontificates. His heart lives in Ukraine with Marina. He is working on doing something about that.

Two years ago, Jessie Wyre died — but to Meredith Reed it feels like only yesterday. ‘I remember Jessie holding me close to him on those days we sought refuge in his bedroom together,’ she recalls sadly when having reluctantly, nervously, stepped back in to the powerful world of Race Wyre, the father of Jessie and his two brothers Johnnie and Jack. It appears little has changed. The family tragedies and misunderstandings, the hatred Meredith remembers and that had so often surfaced violently in the Wyre household, threaten now to spoil the impending marriage of Race Wyre to a close friend of her late mother. Meredith struggles to come to terms with her own memories too. She still sees herself as a victim — a s much a victim as she believed Jessie and then Johnnie, to be. But not all is what it seems … About the Author Broken is Gail Jensz’s first novel. Gail describes herself as a quiet ‘student of life’. When she is not writing, she enjoys long walks in the country, doing her art or simply reading or relaxing. Gail Jensz lives in West Gippsland.

"As you go through life you will probably get your fair share of traumas. Just remember, they will either make you, or break you-there is no middle road." - Weary Dunlop Although we put much energy into controlling events in our lives by working hard, seeking financial security and stable supportive relationships, many things remain unpredictable. We never know when adversity may hit; and when it does, how do we react? We have options to take a passive approach and wallow in being the victim, or we can treat it as an opportunity for growth by positively acting to minimise the damage and to learn from the experience. In Lose? No way! Ron Palmer shows us many times how to take the second approach. He presents an inspiring collection of stories from his life about taking risks, enjoying (or suffering) the consequences and overcoming adversity.

One of the most serious and controversial issue of our time all over the world is the issue of the status of women in Islam and in Islamic law. The issue, for example, of wearing the Burka (the Hijab) by Muslim women in public places, schools, and in courts has recently made it to the front cover of most newspapers and magazines. Some countries have already banned the Burka in public places; others are reluctant for fear of limiting freedom and multiculturalism. But, what happens to a western woman who goes to a Muslim country, such as Saudi Arabia, where Islamic law (the Sharia) is applied? Is she allowed to wear a mini‐skirt or a dress of her liking in public places? Or, is she able to wear a bikini on the beach? Almost all Muslim scholars and writers, including women, have defended the position of women in Islam. While they draw their arguments on a very limited number of verses in the Qur'an and Hadith, however, they take them out of their context in trying to prove that women under Islam are free and have human rights. This book shows how Islam has always considered women as inferior to men in every aspect: physically, intellectually, morally, and religiously. Their demise and denial of their basic rights are God sanctioned laws that every Muslim follows, not just 'fundamentalists'. Indeed, the Qur'an remains for all Muslims, the uncreated word of God Himself. It is valid for all times and places; its ideas are absolutely true and beyond all criticism. To question it is to question the very word of God, and hence blasphemous. A Muslim's duty is to believe it and obey its divine commands. This non-fiction book reveals the shocking truth about the real position of women in the Qur'an and Islam, and how Islam is deeply anti-women. It reports the shocking truth of how women are denied their basic human rights in the Islamic law and in real life.

This book is a narrative on the life of a Korean, Catholic, middle‐class family living in Sydney, Australia, since 1970; of a mother who is obsessive‐compulsive, of a father who is pedantic and of a son who is on a slow burn to self‐destruction to a day of infamy in January 1994. “If I had been asked during the Aftermath whether there was anything askew about my brother, I would have denied it. However, years later I had a dream about my Brother standing in front of a very large 2 metre tall portrait of Jesus with a psychotic, obsessed, warped look in his eyes; purveying a deadly fanaticism.”

Heretics is a novel of forbidden love, set against the backdrop of the Hundred Years’ War and the Inquisition. It follows the point of view of Tom, an English orphan boy and atheist who fights the French as a bowman. Wounded in battle, he flees to the town of Auch where he disguises himself as a Frenchman. In a tavern, he meets Claire, the daughter of a former priest, who is to be married to the knight Guillaume, and who has snuck out of her house dressed in her father’s clothes to escape her plight. When Claire’s father and sister fall under the suspicion of the inquisitors, Claire’s marriage is hastened to keep the good family name. Tom and Claire form a closer bond and sneak away to be with each other. However, the romance is stopped short when Guillaume discovers Tom’s identity and captures him, while the inquisitors imprison the witches Gyverny and Imelda, who have been vying for Claire and her sister Eve to join their cult, and Gyverny pines for Tom’s affections.

Mark of the Crescent is set in the 17th Century Ottoman Empire, taking place in many exotic and culturally diverse locations such as Istanbul, Izmir, Cyprus, Cairo, Gaza, Hebron and Jerusalem. It tells the story through the eyes of Kansu – a Janissary. The Janissaries were Christian‐born boys torn from their families, conscripted to be raised according to the Islamic faith as professional soldiers, guardians of the Sultan and his lands. Yet, Kansu has always felt much different to his peers. He bears a crescent scar on his right shoulder. Its meaning is shrouded in mystery. He is unaware of his origins — that of an Ottoman prince ‐ whisked away from the harem’s fatal intrigues where his mother, a concubine to the Sultan, had been executed. One day, the battle‐hardened Kansu is given a dangerous mission: to investigate and arrest a man who claims to be the Messiah… Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

February 24, 2010 ‐ Vancouver Olympic Games. Through the fog lies a four metre high icy wall that will launch you as high as a four story building. The only thing in between you and Olympic glory is one final jump... 'Jump' is a story about mind, body and a fighting spirit. It is journey of self discovery, self belief and battles to overcome injury and setbacks. It's about commitment and the dedication required to reach the top. From a young age Lydia set her eyes on Olympic glory, she had no idea with which sport but she knew more than anything else she wanted a Gold medal. Initially gymnastics was her chosen sport, but when injury and opportunity curtailed that career her destiny opened up before her. Australia was embarking on a radical program of turning gymnasts into aerial skiers and Lydia was offered a chance for a new beginning, even though she had never skied before ‐ a challenge she grasped with open arms and one that would change her life forever. Lydia's rise to the top ranks of the sport was rapid only because she pushed herself to her extreme limits, often through pain and debilitating injuries. In essence she set out to jump like a man and was determined to push boundaries and break new ground in women's aerial skiing. Aerial skiing is both an elegant and dangerous sport that leaves no room for error. It is a sport that tests an athletes' courage, resilience and the ability to focus ‐ a sport that only the mentally tough can master. 'Jump' is an intimate account from the athlete detailing the trials and tribulations required to reach the top of her sport. It is a fascinating account of a story littered with injury and success.

'It was evident in many of these images that I was actually trying to capture atmosphere & that I was becoming consciously or unconsciously much more sensitive to the subtle variations of light & shade. Things that might have gone unnoticed a few years earlier became interesting simply because the light was hitting them in a certain way. Incidental Images created by light falling on everyday things presented more frequently, inviting response & begging to be photographed: clouds, roads, waves, buildings, plants, rocks, animals, people, anything, anything at all, no matter how ordinary, as long as it was in some way enhanced by or imbued with light. Light & the incredible way it could transform things began to control how I saw the world.' ‐ Peter Brown Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

It's Drew's eighth birthday and his best mate Mikey is sleeping over. The boys are having the best day ever! There are new toys to be played with, Yummy birthday food to eat, Birthday games to be played, A hideous monster to be discovered under the bed... Did someone say monster?! Their discovery of something under the bed, causes instant panic among the two boys and when Mum and sister Daisy get in on the act, pandemonium erupts! Chris Collin and Megan Kitchin (author and illustrator of the wild and whacky Funky Chicken - A Bushy Tale of Crocs and Chooks) have teamed up again to bring you this delightfully Australian romp of a story that may teach us all a gentle lesson about preconceived ideas. This book comes with a bonus audio-visual CD with the narrated story (by the author) backed by orchestral music plus the fun and quirky song Doug The Bug, sung by Chris Collin, music and lyrics by Adrian and Barb Hannon, The SongStore

Little Meerkat is a humorous, lively and adventurous picture book aimed at 3 – 7 year olds. The main character, Little Meerkat, craves independence and adventure in his life. His extended family, of Mum, Dad, brother, sister, Aunty and Uncle, are there to guide and protect him. Aleesah has used this internationally recognised animal as the main character for her latest picture book, to ensure children from all backgrounds, cultures and countries can connect with and learn from Little Meerkat’s story. Because Little Meerkat is such a brave and inscrutable character, his behaviour, dialogue and mis‐adventuresbring humour to the story, offering fabulous opportunities for the illustrator, Shannon Melville, to interpret the text and create truly inspiring and unique visual images.

In Barry the Bike and the Hardware Truck, Barry gets a flat tyre from a nail dropped by the Hardware Truck who doesn't seem to care. What can Barry do to stop this? The Barry the Bike series is one of the very few children's books featuring classic motorcycles, cars and trucks. The illustrations are sure to delight the young and bring back great memories to the not so young. Barry the Bike books are set in a time that was simpler and a lot less rushed than the lives we live today. The stories do not suffer from being cluttered with the latest technology and products that become outdated before the book is read. The Barry the Bike series is designed to bring enjoyment for all ages and encourage young children to read them over and over again.
