January/February 2016 Thank you to the publishers, work colleagues, booksellers, publicists, printers, who have helped make the Christmas for us special. Our books (on behalf of the authors & publishers) have been in amazing demand. People buy books. And so we go into 2016 into a time of change again and those who are captured by the opportunity change offers will be successful and those who wish to kick tyres will fall by the wayside. The fact of the “Book Council of Australia” falling under the bus does not surprise me as we as a nation are supposed to be treated fairly; not to swayed by the works of the Tom’s and Richard’s of the writers world. We have to live for the content we have as an industry without the patronage of politicians. We sure have the writers to allow us to succeed. I find the continued harping to do with territorial copyright frustrating as it has gone on for maybe 20 years, 30 years. We have really hoisted the flag to the foreign online vendors to make this a fruitful land. Perhaps if the change had come all those years ago we would not be cussing about those foreign entities. My job is to stay in this industry of working between the path I know; my colleagues, the authors, the publishers and the booksellers – nothing has changed. The books - well how about kicking of 2016 with a new Lisa Messenger and something old bought back via current methods. Lisa Messenger is indefatiguable; her output could fund an industry on its own, we all admire her work and the entourage about her. If you want Lisa in person please contact Janet Judge janet@dennisjones.co.au to see how we can lure Lisa. Tom Thompson has provided us with the autobiography / biography of Arthur Upfield. Whilst it was published as a biography it is heralded as an autobiography. I am yet to read, however if we sell a meagre percentage of what our eBook sales are of Bony we will be in for thousands of copies of this. Fact is so many of our Bony sales are from overseas. Upfield is one of the industries major unheralded export success stories. We are still pushing ahead with those print versions of Bony. As soon as we have them finalised we will tell everyone. The versions are either printed by Lightning Source in either Scoresby
(Victoria) or La Vergne in Tenessee. The print location is dependent on the paper stock used. They also sit on global databases for the world to consume in both print and eBook. The big news from ETT is that in February we will be releasing the only known books written about the Kelly Gang in the time that they were alive. Thrilling stuff as this version will have a special jacket design from the period as well. I don’t have isbn’d and they are not on this order form as we do not have the final file to create the next versions from. Really exciting and yes, we have other Classics to unleash. Could talk for hours about this. By the way you won’t find these on titlepage. If you get the chance try reading Paddy Steinforts book “Breakfast with Bails” If you liked “Any Given Team”, Breakfast with Morrie” or “The Shack” you will love this. It is a cross over from all of these books and then a glimpse into those precious dying days of someone who must have been a person who I would have liked to meet for coffee and so on. Part of the setting is in Brighton in South Australia – i have walked around there so many times as well as knowing good people who live there. Please make this the success we believe it to be. The back story of how we got the book is a story in itself – thank you Janet. The print runs are from Scoresby, the author is in LA. As you know I am really never short of a word; but I do want to give a shout out to David Tenenbaum of Melbourne Books. His books are our #1 and #2 bestsellers this season; he had the G&D to assert to us that these books would be so successful and they have been. Also to the booksellers of Carlton who shared the dream as well. Finally our small business is having lunch with the coworkers this Friday – 20 of the best – I truly thank you all –and who knows next year maybe Joscelyn Kevan may fly down for the gathering.
Best wishes and thank you to truly Inependent Publishers and Independent Bookseller See you at your shop or a launch next time DJ

AVAILABLE NOW A biography of Arthur Upfield as told to Jessica Hawke with an introduction by Detective Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte. Here is Arthur Upfield's own story, the author of those remarkable murder mysteries set in odd corners of Australia and featuring the Aboriginal sleuth named 'Bony'. A detailed dossier compiled with the cheerful candour of the subject himself. An Englishman by birth, Arthur Upfield tried his luck in Australia. After a short spell as a waiter in Adelaide, Upfield felt drawn towards the Interior where he became a boundary‐rider, offside‐driver, cattle‐drover, opal‐gouger, rabbit‐ trapper, vermin fence patroller and manager of a camel station, drifting through the strange terrains and unusual company which were later to become the subject of his novels. He also tells how he unwittingly provided a real outback murderer with a 'fool‐proof' method of disposing of a body, and who was the original on whom the character of 'Bony' was based.

Margaret Preston, Australia's foremost woman painter between the wars, sent a series of shock‐waves through Sydney's art circles with her vital art, her spirited journalism and her belligerent enthusiasm for living, during a career that spanned over seventy years. 'A red‐headed little firebrand of a woman', she was an artist who never stood still, moving from realism to Post‐ Impressionism, to an Aboriginal‐inspired style of art with unceasing verve and freshness.

AVAILABLE NOW Never shy of voicing an opinion, artist Margaret Preston launched into print on a variety of subjects, from flower arranging and furnishing a bedroom, to Aboriginal art and design, Pokerwork and Wood‐blocking. Selected from the pages of Australia's journals by Elizabeth Butel, this collection addresses Preston's recurring preoccupations ‐ "modern" art, an Australian national art and the craft of art‐making. "The natural enemy of the dull" ‐ Preston's style is infused with paradox, retaining its freshness through her very direct, uncompromising attack and illustrated with examples of her woodcuts.

This biography of Frank Cobbold opens when Frank goes to sea on a Clipper aged 14. It follows him through inexperience as a Fijian trader who escaped the cannibals' cook pot and survived one of the worst hurricanes in living memory. In Australia he learned the skills of a surveyor and quickly became a sought‐after and trusted station manager. Despite problems that would have defeated a less resolute man he took droughts, cheats and unyielding land tenure regulations in his stride to become one of Australia's great pioneering pastoralists. Admired by fellow bushmen, trusted by his partners and wooed by bankers, his gritty determination earned him a small fortune which he gave away. It's a remarkable story.

This is a remarkable book as it is a translation of an account written by the author Ernst Raubitschek soon after World War Two. As the title suggests it tells of his journey to Dachau concentration camp, his stay there and subsequent journey to Buchenwald concentration camp after Kristallnacht and before the outbreak of war. It has been translated by Ernst's daughter Renate Yates. She has included a preface telling of a happy and full life prior to these traumatic events and a postscript describing their emigration to Australia and the new life this family made for themselves in a new country. The detailed descriptions written in this account stand as testament to the abhorrent behaviour, cruelty and antisemitism to which Austrian Jews were subjected even before the start of the war.

AVAILABLE NOW The case of the "Missing Beaumont Children" has been forged into Australia's psyche and soul like no other crime. A crime so shocking that it has often been described as a defining moment in this country's history. After 50 years of intense police investigation the whereabouts of Jane (9), Anna (7) and Grant Beaumont (4) is still a mystery; Australia's most famous unsolved crime. On the morning of January 26, 1966 the three children set off from their Somerton Park home to Glenelg Beach on a bus to enjoy a brief excursion at Adelaide's most popular beach only a few kilometres away. Apart from a brief sighting from the Beaumont family's postman early on that afternoon, there have been no other sightings of the children since.
The 'mystery' of the children's disappearance has often overshadowed the 'misery' the Beaumont parents have had to endure. This book takes the reader inside the trauma of Nancy and Grant; from the panic and heartbreaking first few days to the utter despair in later years. Only seven years after the Beaumont disappearance, two girls Joanne Ratcliffe (11) and Kirste Gordon (4) were abducted from Adelaide Oval during a football match. Were the two abductions connected? How could they not be connected? Author Michael Madigan delves into the sordid world of the numerous 'persons of interest' who have at times been suspects in this case and forensically answers the question 'who could do such a thing?'

Over 400,000 Australians served in the military during the First World War. Of these, over 60,000 men lost their lives and another 137,000 were wounded. This had a massive impact on the young Australian nation with a population of just a few million. In each Australian state battalions were formed which became closely associated with men of that state or region. In this way the military history of most parts of Australia can be readily traced. The Northern Territory, however, was too small to have its own unit. Indeed there was not even a recruiting centre in the N.T. Men left to enlist in other states. For these reasons the WWI history of Territiorians has remained obscure. There were less than 1,000 European adults in the N.T. at the time war broke out, and as many as 300 enlisted ‐ an incredibly high proportion. There is no better N.T. enlistment story than that of the famous Albert Borella, who went on to win the Victoria Cross. He walked 88 miles from Tennant Creek and then borrowed a horse to get to Darwin. He then got transport to Townsville where he enlisted. Such were the typically colourful methods used by young men to enlist from all areas across the N.T.From Frontier to Frontline is a unique record. Indeed, it is the only source naming the NT enlistees in WWI. A brief biography of each man is given, forming a very valuable source of Territorian history. Other chapters detail 19 gallantry decorations and a roll of honour naming the 67 Territorians who were killed in action or died of illness or wounds. There is also a chapter on the men returning home which includes some rich observations on the social and economic history of Darwin during the war and immediately thereafter.

Any gardener can graft,’ says Allen Gilbert, and in this book he shows that the air of mystery and difficulty surrounding this age‐old craft is a myth … at least in Australia, where the warm weather means that, with the right techniques, you can be successful at grafting and budding nearly anywhere, anytime. Known to many as ‘Gilby the grafter’, Allen’s many years of testing different techniques and possibilities underpin this guide to successful grafting.
Author Information ALLEN GILBERT has written widely on horticulture for international journals and national newspapers and magazines, is the author of many gardening books, and a popular radio garden‐show personality and talkback presenter. Hands‐ on experience always informs Allen’s sound horticultural advice: he’s worked as a professional orchardist, developed his own sustainable horticultural enterprise, and carried out independent research. His horticultural expertise was recognised by his peers in 2015, when he received the Horticultural Media Association (Victoria) President’s Award.

Bound explores a ten‐year period in the life of "Kristen", an Australian expatriate in Shanghai. Living in a foreign country is transformative, because it attracts opportunities for learning, discovering and becoming. However, "turning to the foreign", presents many challenges for western expatriates moving from the West to the East. Bound aims to ensure that the past is not forgotten. It emphasises the importance of the freedom to choose and create one's life, to take risks and to live "outside the square." This literary memoir explores the reasons why "Kristen", an Australian expatriate and others from Australia, Europe and the UK choose to live and work in a very different culture to their own and the challenges they face in China. Although there have been discussions about challenges faced through East to West migrations, the literature about West to East migrations is meagre. Yet these migrations are becoming more frequent due to the advances of technology and the fact that people's work increasingly involves a global role. Bound helps to fill this gap in the literature. This book illustrates the experiences of both Chinese and western expatriates and their contributions to life and work in Shanghai. Philosophical and literary themes such as loss, attachment to place, freedom and transformation are highlighted throughout. Photos which depict the daily life and some of the history of Shanghai are included. Poetry Author Information Christine Lavender was born in Adelaide, South Australia. She is the author of two editions of an academic book, International Perspectives on Competence in the Workplace: Implications for Research Policy and Practice (2001,2009). This richly varied account of a life spanning seven decades is more than a memoir about success in business. From the author’s early years growing up in a medium sized town in Western Victoria during and immediately after the Second World War it traces a career that culminates in a high profile in Australian sporting and corporate life during some of the wine industry’s most turbulent years. In between there are tales of the inevitable move to the city and the trials and tribulations of life in the big smoke, university studies, playing for Carlton Football Club, national service and marriage at twenty with fatherhood following soon after. Ray writes vividly of an incident‐packed career embracing teaching, AFL umpiring, the pharmaceutical industry and the eventual move into a senior position with a leading winemaker. Along the way there are tumultuous times involving marriage break‐up, single parenting and a fresh start on family life in bringing two families together. Mid‐life crisis leads to despair, departure and an eventual reunion with the wine industry. The subsequent three decades of controversial top level involvement in the wine industry is an exhilarating journey of boosting profits, takeovers (and being taken over), mergers, bitter corporate battles, disasters and triumphs. With this comes numerous directorships, including seven years as chairman of St Kilda Football Club. It is a full and candid account of an incident‐filled life that provides a lively and engaging read.
Author Information From an early life in the family’s bakery in a Victorian country town, Ray King rose to become one of the biggest movers and shakers in the Australian corporate world. During a thirty‐year, often controversial career that began in 1970 he brought a fresh way of thinking to a wine industry steeped in tradition. He introduced to the world the now ubiquitous bag in box wine carton, initiated takeovers and mergers during the wine industry’s most stormy years and lifted an ailing Mildara Wines Limited into the global wine industry’s third largest profit earner. He saw early playing days with Carlton Football Club, spent a number of years as an AFL central umpire, won four Australian Masters Road Cycling Championships and later served seven years as chairman of directors at St Kilda Football Club.He lives in Melbourne with Dawn, his wife of almost fifty years. 'If God is too indifferent, or too non‐existent to take care of His creation, then clearly it's up to Me.' Morgen Tanjenz is a lawyer with an overactive sense of justice. His mission in life is to reward the virtuous, punish the ignorant and avenge those who won't avenge themselves. His favourite pastime is 'life sculpture' ‐ anonymously intervening in the lives of strangers to change their destiny in ways he thinks they deserve. But Morgen isn't the only one changing lives in the city. A serial killer is on the prowl and taunting the police in letters to the local rag. But, as the body count rises, Detective Sergeant Blacksnake Fowler can hardly focus on the job with so many distractions: his boss hates him, his deputy is trying to undermine him and the woman he loves is having an affair. In the cicada‐throbbing heat of a Sydney summer, the threads of a strange story become entangled in a wild conclusion no one will see coming. 'a ripsnorter of a ride through the dark heart of the burbs... may just be Australia's answer to American Psycho.' Kirsten Krauth, just_a_girl 'Sometimes funny, sometimes disturbing, and always compelling... with a super‐original premise and a one‐of‐a‐kind protagonist'. Tony Wilson, Making News

Spineless Wonders
This is, at first glance, a quite disparate collection of stories. Some are very, very short; others are longer. Some are humorous and conceptual; others are more conventional narratives. The settings range from New York to Texas to San Francisco to Sydney, even Malaysia and Lismore. The characters vary in age from three years old in ‘Rights of Man’ to nonagenarians in ‘Shady Oaks.’ And yet this varied assemblage of work is unified by a few core themes: the search for one’s place in the world, failed attempts to connect with other people, and lofty aspirations not acted upon. ‘…fluent and funny, as always.’ TEGAN BENNETT ‘I had to stop reading ‘Robber’ at work for fear that someone would ask me to explain my uncontrollable laughter. You can't explain why Jon's writing is so brilliant; you have to read it to understand his mastery of dialogue and pace.’ ZOË SADOKIERSKI JON STEINER is a writer and screenwriter who lives in Sydney. An American by birth, he migrated to Australia in 2000. His work has appeared in the UTS Writers’ Anthology and two Spineless Wonders productions, Escape and Little Fictions.

Complex issues, like climate change, defy simple presentation and simplistic response. But their worst enemy, according to Turbulence, is fear of complexity. Paul Carter argues that publicly‐funded research cultures and their sponsers contribute to this problem when they treat complexity as a threat to communication. The result is often simplistic fictions. The phenomenon of turbulence, Carter argues, is common to natural and human systems: it defines a multi‐actor decision making culture where feedback constantly modifies the research direction. Only when climate change is culturally internalised as an expression of human, as well as environmental, complexity can human and non‐ human interests elide. Creativity, the ceasless quest for change, recovers its ethical dimension when it understands climate change in relation to the future of the public realm. Carter's account of a ten‐year climate change creative research project, 'Hamlet's Mill', is a vehicle for this argument. It is also a challenge to our research cultures to understand the feedback at the heart of knowledge formation and to design their research programs differently.

Moving non‐chronologically through youth and maturity, dreamscapes and time, Shari Kocher’s long‐awaited first collection charges the elusive music of cross‐generational song‐lines—mothers and daughters, daughters and grandmothers, lovers and kin—with the invisibles and intangibles of two decades spent honing her craft. This is a book about breathing. It is also about the changing contours of the journey home, even when the ground of what is meant by home seems most absent, impossible or undone. Rooted in place, yet animated by the immaterial, these poems breathe a body of living and loving alive.
Author Information Shari Kocher is a poet and scholar whose work has been published over two decades in literary journals and anthologies in Australia and elsewhere. Born in 1975 in far north Queensland, educated in Sydney and in Adelaide, Shari has lived in many parts of the world, including Ireland, where some of these poems were written under the influence of ancestral ties. She holds a PhD from Melbourne University, and works as a freelance writer, researcher, editor and poet.

In August 1834 the barque Charles Eaton was wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef. Five of the crew made off with the only seaworthy life boat and eventually reached Timor. The rest of the crew and six passengers escaped on rafts built from the wreckage. All but four boys met a grisly fate at the hands of Torres Strait Islanders. Two of the boys were sold to a family from Murray Island for two bunches of bananas, the other two were never seen again. Although news of the wreck and the possibility of survivors reached England early in 1835 more than a year would pass before a rescue mission was organised. Warwick Hirst has been published in the Bulletin, The Week End Australian, The Age and GEO. He is the author of Great Convict Escapes in Colonial Australia and The Man Who Stole the Cyprus, and edited My Dear, Dear Betsy, a collection of Australian letters. He was formerly Curator of Manuscripts at the State Library of NSW where he curated six major exhibitions including The Governor: Lachlan Macquarie,1810‐1822.

Soozey Johnstone ‐ one of Australia's most experienced and respected business and team advisors ‐ has finally written her first book, I Am The Problem. The book brilliantly reveals the roadblocks that hold teams back ‐ roadblocks of character, team dynamics, or missing skills ‐ and the roadblocks in ourselves. I Am The Problem is the simplest, most insightful and easiest‐to‐implement book on dysfunctional executive teams ‐ how to make success happen more o en and more easily, and rediscovering your organisa onal "mojo". The book is designed to be a very practical "hands on" primer for anyone facing apparently intractable organisational obstacles, whether or not the organisation is recognising or facing up to those obstacles ‐ yet. As a Director or Manager, you can choose to act on any of the 9 obstacles, or just one, or a few, or all of them. Acting on all of them would be a genuinely transformative move. Acting on any of the advice in the book will make you happier, and your organisation much more functional and successful. Each chapter includes at the end a simple to follow "To Do" list to make implementing positive change easy and painless. I Am The Problem is the best thirty bucks you will ever invest in the success of your organisation, and your personal well‐being.

We're all born of the same opportunity. Fat people are like welfare bludgers. 99% of them don't need the help, don't need the pity. But because it's so freely available, so many choices and so much 'sensitivity', they sit dormant, sucking the life out of the people around them, their only purpose to consume and complain. This book is not for fat people. It is not for lazy people. It is for fit people. It is for leaders. It is for people who know that something is wrong. Before, you were inspirational, now you're the minority, oppressed, scorned for looking after yourself, for being athletic, for being healthy. In this confronting (courageous) book, renegade fitness experts Sharny and Julius share thought provoking philosophies and prophecies through powerful parables. An instant classic, this book should be kept close to anybody who feels it's time to stop helping, and time to start leading.

Following on from the worldwide smash hit "FITlosophy 1," this sequel goes deeper into the question: what is the potential for human performance? Uncovering a new affliction affecting our planet, the book starts off at a blistering pace. When it's finished, you will feel like you'd been in a high speed car chase, your heart rate will be elevated, your breathing faster. All readers agree, once you read the final words, you'll just want to get up from where you are and go for the fastest, longest run you ever have.

Of exotic mixed‐race heritage, Chloe Quartpot lives an isolated life on the vast Venus Downs cattle station in the Kimberleys of Western Australia. One day on walkabout with her beloved indigenous grandfather, Johnny Quartpot she is shown a sacred site and he gives her a red stone – the eye of the rainbow serpent. Johnny swears her to secrecy as custodian of the site, but after his sudden disappearance and presumed death and the advances of the station owner’s sons, Carl and Walter Boyce, she decides to leave Venus Downs for Perth. She experiences racial prejudice, but her beauty leads her into modelling and soon catches the eye of a London agent, Paul LeClair. Known simply as “Chloe” she soon becomes and international supermodel. However, her life begins to spiral out of control as successive men seek to possess and control her, often with deadly consequences. From outback Western Australia to London, this is an exciting, fast paced story about passion, murder and cruelty of human greed.

The Raleigh to Coffs Harbour leg in 2015 marked a Centenary Milestone for the NSW North Coast Line. The Bananacoast Railway details stories that have faded in the mists of time; the school train named “Old Misery”, tales of escaping Lions and Refreshment rooms decked out with starched white tablecloths, polished silver and serving three course meals for threepence! This beautifully presented illustrated publication has historical and modern references that will delight both the rail buff and those curious about the origins of the North Coast region of NSW.

Retrash is the result of a 3 year collaboration with 82 artists and designers from 20 countries around the world. Retrash will inspire you with creative and innovative ideas on reusing second hand materials. The book is a recycled piece of art itself as it is printed on 100% recycled paper. This book represents a small part of the solution to our growing problem of waste, which is to reduce the demand for new materials by reusing existing materials. If we can reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill and in our oceans, we can also reduce the need for sourcing new materials through deforestation and mining.

Australia is an upbeat, quirky and sometimes humorous look at Australia and Australians ‐ the land, its people and its wildlife ‐ and what we value about our past that makes us proud now. Records, statistics, key dates, essential facts and achievements are presented in charts and lists, and supplemented by surprising information and intriguing stories about the people who shaped our nation ‐ the famous and the infamous. Fact spreads give thumbnail basics of topics such as prime ministers, buildings and classic Australian films. 'Then and now' spreads, which are largely pictorial. Throughout are poems and pertinent quotes. Photographic spreads highlight landscapes and wildlife. This engaging celebration of Australia is both an almanac and photographic record, the words and pictures coming together to create a vibrant picture of the country in which we live.

Do the meerkats have what it takes to become champions in the most deadly contest of all - their fight against the Ringmaster? A hilarious series for boys, featuring death-defying meerkat action! Full of comical characters, daft puns, fast dialogue and even faster action, these book are irresistable to boys aged around six to eight years.

Drive down St George's Road in North Fitzroy on the evenings the Soup Bar is open and you'll find a queue stretching out the door and around the corner. With its brightly coloured interior, refreshing spoken menu and flavourful Moroccan cuisine, The Soup Bar over the past 16 years has become a Melbourne institution. More than just a restaurant, the Moroccan Soup Bar is founded on a philosophy, what Hana describes as 'a vision whose primary objective was not monetary, where everyone who visited, whether a one‐time visitor or repeat customer, felt their senses were stimulated...to share experiences, and walk away a little changed as a consequence.' Hana, head cook and owner, is releasing a cookbook of the wonderful vegetarian dishes served every night at the restaurant. Her devoted customers have sought the secrets of her recipes, in particular the famed chickpea bake, a dish so delicious it's won awards. Now the public will have the chance to recreate these beautiful, flavoursome recipes in their own homes. There's even a recipe for the restaurant's wall paint, passed down to Hana from her father.
Welcome to the world of The Grade Cricketer. Described as the most original voice in cricket, The Grade Cricketer represents the fading hopes and dreams of every ageing amateur sportsman. In this tell‐all ‘autobiography’, The Grade Cricketer describes his cricketing career with unflinching honesty and plenty of humour, in turn providing insights into the hyper‐masculine cricket ‘dressing room’. This one‐time junior prodigy is now experiencing the lean, increasingly existential years of adult cricket. Here, he learns quickly that one will need more than just runs and wickets to make it in the alpha‐dominated grade cricket jungle, where blokes like Nuggsy, Bruiser, Deeks and Robbo reign supreme. Through it all, The Grade Cricketer lays bare his deepest insecurities – his relationship with Dad, his fleeting romances outside the cricket club – and, in turn, we witness a gentle maturation; a slow realisation that perhaps, just maybe, there is more to life than hitting 50 not out in third grade and enjoying a few celebratory beers afterwards. Or is there? The Grade Cricketer book is based upon the popular Twitter account, @gradecricketer, which has received critical acclaim for its frighteningly honest portrayal of amateur cricket.
"...there are those rare mentors that exert only a subtle force of us at first contact, but whose impact defies the laws of physics and time. Instead of fading, it grows. And when they are gone, when there's no contact at all, the effect multiplies. It's as if their presence was the last tackler to navigate before the message finally hit paydirt in our minds and our hearts." Think of the greatest coach or teacher you've had: what was the most important lesson they passed on? If you're like most people, it's something like "it doesn't take talent to hustle", or "persistence pays off", or just "be yourself." That's because the teachers who really touch us, and change our lives, are the ones who teach us more than just the curriculum, or the skills, or the tricks. They teach us about life, and about character. Dean Bailey, or 'Bails' as everyone knew him, was widely regarded as one of those coaches. Not only was he a former head coach of Melbourne, he'd been a player at one of the powerhouse teams of the 80's, and a coach at two separate premiership teams in modern times.
