June 2015 New Title Releases I am flying to Melbourne and suppose home time will be about 8.30 pm and then Friday is a day of meetings, then Perth on Monday. The flight is full and no one is without a hand held device. Sickening? Well it is only what I see and it is where our consumers come from. The adult next to me is playing candy crush, the bloke on the other aisle has his buds spreading a terrible music sound. These are our consumers. These are the people who need to be offered books that can be stimulating to them in a time when people are literally being crushed by content, and swamped by the lack of quality time. We have to be constantly vigilant in giving the best book and experience environment to these "crushed by content consumers" who are savvy to overseas trends and foreign supplied experiences. How do we trap them to buy locally? The most alarming part of the federal budget this week is in the back story of how tax revenue will rise year on year 33% on digital downloads - the downloaded economy takes some buyers away from store experience. These numbers assert that the downloadable business is trending to over A$2b per year, even if it flattens it will still climb to A$4b in my work years. I believe the figures quoted at one of the weekends book conferences puts the book trade at clinging to $1b in sales. So well done to those businesses who press content to consumers in an exciting way. One shop I was in this week was "Where the Wild Things Are"; great whole store devoted to content for the very young. I also was in MCA in Sydney and did a head count of close to 20 shoppers. How do we uncomplicate our limited time so as we can focus on merchandise, superior content, the long tale of content, the sprawling divergence of content? We are going to go through some really mean years as government funding slows down our needed support for this important industry. Every device in tonight's flight comes from overseas manufacturers, all the end profit goes offshore. The book trade is not entirely like that. We create to entertain! To sell globally and to keep some money in Lidcombe, or The West End. DJA is in the process of losing a publisher to a government assisted business; I could call that "Australia - The land of the unlevel playing field". I have written this over a series of flights as we worked on the Gardners UK part of our business, so it is a bit truncated. The ABA/LEB trade show last weekend was good, the usual crush of booksellers lugging the huge bags of payola from the big houses and then an exhibition site which was smaller than last year. It did however give the feel of a cosy industry and a time to forget change.

Our key showcased titles were - Solomon's Noose - by Steve Harris, the story of Solomon Blay the Hangman from Hobart with quotes from Les Carlyon. With Just One Suitcase by Cheryl Koenig, “Like many adult children of first generation Australians, I have grown to appreciate more deeply the momentous decision made by my parents in leaving their homes, their families and everything familiar to come to a new land. I believe Australia has benefited in so many ways from the trust and optimism of those who migrated to our shores. Our richness as a migrant nation endures through the stories of our forebears, told and retold to new generations. This is one such story among many that make us who we are today.” – Tanya Plibersek, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Development My journey continued and last Monday I sat at Melbourne Airport for 6 hours awaiting a flight to have a fuel leak repaired. Mr Roberts from Gardners elicited from the passenger in seat 14A that her favourite Perth Bookshop was the new “New Edition” in Fremantle. We visited a couple of days later and Alan (Crow Books as well) still knows how to curate a store's collection to allow for consumers to call it a favourite. On the way back the customer in seat 28H (from Hobart) told me her favourite shop was Fullers in Hobart – and they can answer all questions. We are a land of contrasts as the flight back had many passengers reading physical books. Our sales so far this month are very good – still can’t really fathom why our unit sales on Secret Girls' Business are so high; May 2015 will be our best month's unit sales for 12 years (and they are not on titlepage) – not complaining just phenomenal. We also are going to distribute Lisa Messenger's The Collective magazine and will make a push to all stores who have shared in the book sales of Daring & Disruptive. Watch for one of our sales people pushing this magazine. Delighted to see some of the Dymocks stores undergoing ownership changes to keep our bookshops evident in key buying locations. Finally, I achieved a small personal milestone in swimming in both the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean within a ten day period – sometimes luck is with me. Read well! DJ PS – We hope to be distributing Readers Digest trade books in ANZ – confirmation soon DJ

This is a true story about two boys, Istvan and Frici, who live two kilometres but worlds apart in Romania. One is Catholic, one is Jewish; one grows up on a farm, the other in the affluent part of town. Life is routine and secure, the future seems predictable and each boy knows his place. Yet when the Second World War breaks out, the familiar world with its clear divisions disintegrates. Families are torn apart as men are forcibly recruited to fight in the war. As the country comes under Nazi, then later communist control, people are held hostage to an ever-changing political landscape, punctuated by military interventions and fluctuating allegiances. As the chance of a peaceful future becomes more remote, with a totalitarian regime in control, Frici and his brother, already facing persecution as Jews, escape across the border with the help of people smugglers, the authorities in pursuit. Istvan, just 16 years old, is transported to work in a Russian gulag, before his chance at freedom comes too. In their parallel journeys, both young men leave their families and beloved homeland to an uncertain future for a shot at freedom in Australia, sacrificing all that is familiar. Facing the challenge of building a new life, they even change their names in an effort to belong. This epic book, spanning two continents, recounts the story of three generations of two families whose lives unexpectedly intersect in their adopted country. Beautifully capturing the loss faced when war dislocates families, it also tells of the struggles and challenges of starting anew and adapting to a different way of life. With Just One Suitcase serves as a tribute to the courage and resilience of two men who bear the scars of war and face adversity without surrendering their optimism for the future. Like many adult children of first generation Australians, I have grown to appreciate more deeply the momentous decision made by my parents in leaving their homes, their families and everything familiar to come to a new land. I believe Australia has benefited in so many ways from the trust and optimism of those who migrated to our shores. Our richness as a migrant nation endures through the stories of our forebears, told and retold to new generations. This is one such story among many that make us who we are today. - Tanya Plibersek, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Development Author Information Cheryl Koenig OAM, is a Sydney-based writer and motivational speaker. With Just One Suitcase is her fourth book – the family’s memoir – and is Cheryl’s homage to her father, Frici, and her father-in-law, Istvan; and her belief in the importance of history in understanding ourselves. Her previous publications are Paper Cranes (2008), The Courage to Care (2007) and There’s always hope: just alter the dreams (2006). In 2009 she was named NSW Woman of the Year, and in 2015 she received the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to people with disabilities, their families and carers. Her involvement with disability services arose out of caring and advocacy for her son who was severely injured in a vehicle accident. Cheryl continues to volunteer her time to improve health care services, which she combines with her passion for writing. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

This book uncovers the zany world of Captain Matchbox, but goes far beyond by following the extraordinary careers of Mic and Jim Conway. After Matchbox finally struck out, the brothers were intimately involved with the Pram Factory and Circus Oz. Jim Conway eventually broke free of 'novelty' to become one of Australia's premier blues musicians, while the name Mic Conway has become synonymous with 'new vaudeville' in Australia. But beware, if you choose to climb aboard the Conway roller-coaster you will encounter gratuitous nudity, free love, tumultuous relationships, unashamed namedropping, tragic vehicle crashes, circus acts, an incurable debilitating disease, political satire, ungodly language, and a barrage of puns and bad gags. This book, possibly more than any other, captures the spirit of the Australian 'counterculture' from the 1970s through to today. Author Information Catherine Fleming is a researcher and writer in Tokyo. She has a Fine Arts diploma and a degree in English Literature and Performance Studies. Catherine has been a writer, subeditor, copywriter and proofreader for various companies, including Sony Music. She has known and worked with Mic Conway for more than twenty years. A highlight was as a Cazzbo stunt double in one of Mic’s Junk Band music videos. John Tait runs a record and book shop in Essendon. He has a Science degree and a Masters in Theology, neither of which are at all relevant to his work as a rock historian. John has had a hand in a number of music books, notably Vanda & Young. He assisted Dingoes bass player John Bois in publishing his music memoir The Dingoes Lament (Melbourne Books). He has had music articles published in Shindig, Ugly Things, Rhythms and The Age. John once had a breakfast show on community radio, until he played an uncensored Nine Inch Nails song by mistake.

This September and October, twenty international rugby teams will converge on England, the historical home of rugby union, to compete for the William Webb Ellis trophy, a little gold cup that only four nations have ever held. Over the course of forty-eight largely sold-out matches-forty pool games, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals, a third place final, and a World Cup final-at thirteen grounds as intimidating and iconic as Twickenham, Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and Wembley Stadium, these sides will compete for rugby's ultimate prize. In this opinionated and fact-filled book, rugby obsessive and commentator Jeremy Taylor provides a backdrop to the tournament, context for what is bound to be a monumental event, and offers his thoughts as to what is likely to transpire come October 31. Will the All Blacks be the first side to successfully defend the trophy, or will the power and passion of the Springboks triumph? Can hosts England satisfy the hopes and dreams of their home crowd? Or can Michael Cheika turn his Wallaby side from chumps to champs within the space of a year? And are Ireland really worthy of the claims being made for them that they are the greatest Irish side of them all, maybe even good enough to take the Cup for the first time, and really shake up world rugby's established order? It's all here in Rugby World Cup 2015. Insight, facts, informed commentary, plus illustrations from renowned cartoonist Tom Scott. If you like your rugby talk to be considered, passionate and in depth, this is the book for you.

Dietitian Ngaire Hobbins has seen too many older people struggle with cognitive decline, become less physically active and independent and suffer debilitating frailty - particularly after illness or surgery - when something as simple as a change in diet may have helped them continue to lead active and productive lives. Eat to Cheat Ageing is based on the science of nutrition for ageing but written for the everyday reader as well as health professionals. It is not a fad diet. It's about going back to basics: eating and enjoying real food, being active at a level that works for you and being able to live life to the full. Learn how the food is vital in maintaining every one of your body's organs, keeps your blood coursing through your veins and oxygen through your body. Learn how to fight illness and infection, repair bumps and bruises, combat Type 2 Diabetes, and keep your brain adequately fuelled and your mind firing as you'd like it to. Learn why dieting to lose weight in older age is one of the worst things you can do to your physical and mental well-being! Author Information Ngaire Hobbins is a fully qualified and widely experienced dietitian passionate about encouraging people to relish great food in order to get the most out of life. Ngaire has worked in many and varied areas of nutrition, including hospitals and in private practice and spent a number of years within the food industry focussing on developing clear communication between producers and consumers on the food value and qualities of their products. Out of these experiences has grown her deep appreciation of the benefits and pleasures of real food. During her long career, Ngaire has become inspired to counter the poor awareness of the unique nutritional needs of our bodies in our senior years so that we can thrive instead of suffering unnecessary physical and mental frailty and decline. “When you really think about it, pretty much everything you hear about health on radio and TV, in magazines and newspapers and even from lots of health professionals, is aimed at younger adults,’ says Ngaire. “Of course it’s absolutely critical that people do all they can to help themselves live active, healthy lives and that doesn’t change as you get older. But your body changes, and with that your nutritional needs. This is rarely taken into account when messages about health and diets are promoted.” In writing Eat To Cheat Ageing, Ngaire examined the scientific research to get a clear picture of the issues faced by ageing bodies and brains, then combined her clinical experience and skills at translating scientific language into consumer friendly speak. The result is a book that will help older people make the most of life. In this website Ngaire plans to continue to turn a spotlight on issues in health and nutrition for older people to keep visitors informed and up to date with ways to help them enjoy vital, independent lives. Available Now Health & Beauty Tips For Women Aged Between 60 & 80 -How to revolutionise your skin care and make-up -Common sense and good health -How to dress and look your best -Help for thinning hair -Counteract gravity -Look taller. Look slimmer -Beauty treatments that work -The magic of liposomes and peptides -Succeeding with Retin A -Never suffer from jetlag again Author Information Style, beauty and good health have always been part of my life. My interest began in the late 1940s when, as a child, I watched with fascination my glamorous musician grandmother go through her complicated daily hair and beauty routine. And I was full of wonder observing her preparations for an evening piano performance. As a student, a teacher, a young married woman and mother, and a businesswoman, my interest in fashion, health, fitness and beauty has lasted for six decades. For the past 30 years our family business has dealt in antiques – including jewellery, so it was important for me to look stylishly understated whilst working. I loved rising to that challenge every day. I now live a life of retirement spending time with family and friends, traveling and adding to my personal collection of vintage fashion. I continue to keep up with the latest developments in the world of health and beauty. My writing style is intimate and friendly, chatty and lighthearted. Not always politically correct. Lots of references to my own experiences and observations. It is easily read and not wordy. Ideas suggested are sensible, affordable and rely on commonsense. Lots of dot points, headings, top tips and step-by-step procedures. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

It caused nothing short of a sensation in February 1879 when a fledgling team of Aboriginal cricketers from New Norcia Benedictine Mission appeared from nowhere to take on the colony of Western Australia's leading cricket teams and subject them to some humiliating defeats. How was it that this tiny and isolated outpost of Catholic Spain set in the heat of the Western Australian bush could have given rise to such an extraordinary sporting phenomenon? In this ground breaking book, Western Australian historian Bob Reece traces the colourful history of The Invincibles and their spectacular contests during the 1879, 1881, 1881, 1882 and 1886 cricket seasons against Metropolitan Cricket Club, Fremantle, Guildford, York and teams from the Victorian Plains. Dismissing belief that cricket was intended by Bishop Salvado as a 'civilising' device and that local pastoralist Henry Lefroy was responsible for its introduction at New Norcia, the book shows that the mission's Aborigines themselves took the initiative. The Invincibles, as they came to be called, excelled in batting and bowling as well as fielding, challenging the notion that cricket was quintessentially an Englishman's game involving typically English skills and values. They were responsible for lifting the standard of cricket in the colony during the years before the formation of the WACA in November 1885. What was the reason for their outstanding success? Contemporaries attributed it to inherited skills adapted from hunting, but these were mission-educated Aborigines removed from traditional hunting and gathering practices. The Invincibles were a social, not racial, phenomenon. They practised hard and played as a tightly-knit group, their highly-developed communication skills and co-operative efforts as a team reflecting close ties and upbringing in a cohesive and supportive village community over two decades.

Bill Dalton, acclaimed writer and travel guru, describes Looking for Borneo as "a celebration of the island of Borneo, its environment and its people. At the same time, it is a call to action, a plea to save this special place from the ravages of development. A collection of writings, drawings, photographs and music, inspired by Kalimantan and Mark Heyward's acclaimed book, Crazy Little Heaven, an Indonesian Journey, this new volume is a unique artistic collaboration and a fine contribution to the body of Indonesian travel literature. Khan Wilson's quirky and memorable artworks complement the narrative in the same way that a fiery sambal complements a dish of fried rice, adding a splash of colour, a little spice and a sense of fun. Like a canoe on the river, David Metcalf's lucid images capture the colour and vibrancy of Dayak cultures, the quiet magic of the forest and a fascination for the creatures that dwell there. As if that were not enough, Heyward's original songs, ballads of life and love in Indonesia, are brought to life by Kalimantan‐ born Qisie, and a group of talented Indonesian musicians from Lombok and Bandung. The style, best described as 'kampong folk‐rock', reveals another Indonesia ‐ and more of Heyward's very personal vision of this unique part of the world."

This is an account of the 'discovery', exploration. Pacification of the Eastern, Western and Southern Highlands, and Simbu and Enga Provinces of Papua New Guinea, from their beginnings to independence in September 1975 ‐ the colonial era. New Guinea was the last of the great land masses of the world to be 'discovered' and explored by Europeans. But this is a European conceit, for Indonesians and Asians knew of the existence of New Guinea, and had visited its shores long before the first Europeans sighted the island in 1512. However, this is a history of the colonial period. A lot of fresh research into Highlands history has been conducted since 1969, by the author and a great many others. Sinclair has endeavoured to bring as much as possible of it together in a very detailed book, which goes far beyond sagas of exploration. It documents the growth and development through administration, industry and all that is associated with the establishment of a growing infrastructure. The author personally knew many of the great figures in Highlands exploration, notably Mick and Dan Leahy (he also new Jim and Paddy), Jim Taylor, Ivan and Claude Champion. They have all passed on, but not before telling Jim Sinclair their stories of 'discovery'.
Author Information James Sinclair; retiring from the PNG administration after nearly 30 years he settled back to become one of the world's leading PNG historians, and author of over 30 books covering Papua new Guinea. He was awarded the Companion of the Order of the Star of Melanesia; an honorary PhD by the Australian National University, and an OBE for 'services to the State and to literature'.

The height and stature of Sequoia sempervirens, or Coast Redwood, are such that the tree is often called the most dramatic expression of life that has ever existed on Earth. This book tells the remarkable story of the world's tallest tree species growing in the spectacular Great Otway National Park in Victoria. Originally planted by Victorian foresters for experimental purposes on land cleared and abandoned by the early settlers, the iconic Coast Redwood, native of California and tall‐tree champion of the world, is now thriving in the Otways alongside our famous native eucalypt, the towering Mountain Ash. Exploiting the abundant moisture and rich fertility of the Otway soil, the Redwoods have over the years withstood adversity in the form of fire, landslides, lightning and chainsaws ‐ all the while forming a backdrop to the ongoing political debate about the utilisation and conservation of our valuable forest resources. The book also examines some elements of the growth dynamics of Mountain Ash forest in the Otway uplands, and explains how a knowledge of fire and other disturbance can lead to a better understanding of the age, structure, condition and longevity of these forests. Although the majestic Otway Redwoods are still in their youthful growth phase, they may, one day, claim the title of tallest trees in the world. This book is a fascinating insight into how the Otway Redwoods came to be, their historic, cultural and biological significance, and their important place in Victoria's history.
Author Information Roger Smith is a forest scientist and author who was born and raised at Beech Forest in the Otway Ranges. He has studied the Otway Redwoods for over 50 years and is an authority on Victoria’s forests and tall trees.

This beautiful book has been published to mark the bicentenary of the births of Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi whose operas continue to enrich the lives of opera lovers everywhere. They were born at a time when Europe was convulsed by the Napoleonic wars, and when the nation states of Germany and Italy did not yet exist. Each became a master of musical-dramatic forms and transformed the way music was composed for the theatre. Their influence extended well beyond the stage. Peter Bassett's new study of these two great figures of the nineteenth century is richly illustrated in full colour with art works drawn from opera houses, museums and private collections. It features insightful commentaries and magnificent photographs of locations associated with the composers and their works. Author Information Peter Bassett is a writer, speaker and broadcaster on opera, particularly the works of Richard Wagner. He was closely involved with the 1998 production of Der Ring des Nibelungen in Adelaide and the 2001 Australian premiere of Parsifal, Artistic Administrator, Dramaturg, lecturer and coordinator of ancillary events for the 2004 State Opera of South Australia’s production of the Ring, and a consultant for West Australian Opera’s 2006 Tristan und Isolde and the State Opera of South Australia’s 2009 Der fliegende Holländer. He contributes to programme books and publications of opera companies and symphony orchestras in Australia and New Zealand. A lawyer and diplomat by training, Peter served for twenty years in the Australian Diplomatic Service in embassies in East and West Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and was Deputy Legal Adviser in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra until 1992. He was, for a further decade, chief of staff to two Governors of South Australia. Since retiring from the public service, Peter has led more than 30 tours for Renaissance Tours and the Patrons and Friends of Opera Australia, including to Germany, France, Switzerland, Russia, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Czech Republic, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, China, Spain, Austria, Italy, the US and Canada, and within Australia.

In this book Dr Irina Webster reveals that energy is the root of body and mind. We all consist of and are surrounded by an energy field. When energy flows through the body properly, you are in a state of health. When there is an energetic disturbance in the body, a disease state is created. Illnesses manifest in the body’s energy field before they manifest in the physical body. And healing occurs in the energy field before it becomes apparent in the physical body. So, how can we heal ourselves and our life? You’ll get the answers reading “The Secret Energy of Your Body. An Intuitive Guide to Healing, Health and Wellness.” Dr Irina Webster is a medical doctor who is also an intuitive healer. She is the creator of Intuitive Healing Power – an educational program for health professionals and caregivers in regards to intuitive healing and medical intuition. Her on‐line classes and seminars “How to Become an Intuitive Healer” are very popular amongst the health oriented community. Dr Irina’s teaching helps people to activate their own Intuitive Healing Power. Dr Irina dedicates herself to assisting others to heal and empower their body and soul.

The poets of Canberra (and its region) differ widely in techniques and preoccupations. There has never been and 'Canberra School' as such, though Les Murray once bestowed on the poets of this city and region that unhelpful appellation. There has been no pressure on the poets here to represent Canberra's cityscape ‐ ot its surrounding landscapes. Most of the poets sampled write in their own versions of free verse (including a kind of loose iambic). Others consider that the traditional recources of strict metre and formal rhyme are far from exhausted. A few are involved with English version of Japanese forms, such as tanka and haiku. Partly through monthly readings at The Gods Cafe (and its predecessors over many years), most Canberra poets are more than aware of their contemporaries around the country and submit their poems widely to national newspapers, journals and e‐zines. The anthology begins with a single indicative poem from each of the now‐deceased poets who established Canberra's poetic tradition. The differing space allowed to living poets reflects, to a considerable degree, the numbers of collections they have published. It's also based on our assessment of what was submitted to us as their best work. In most cases there are enough poems for the reader to form a preliminary sense of the poet's preoccupations and technical range.

Available Now rob walker is a perceptive spirit, and his language is fast catching up with his noticings. ‐Les Murray tropeland questions the poetic language that propels it forward, dismantling the prosthetic legs of its rhetorical feet. The best poems show Rob Walker's ear to be finely tuned to vernacular. 'Danny in Detention' is particularly deft: a little masterpiece of the colloquial and concrete. ‐Aidan Coleman Walker will write about the Fibonacci sequence or extatosoma tiaratum (the phasmid) as well as bong smokers in the suburbs. Bestiary, field guide and joke book, tropeland is sometimes sardonic, but tempered by a humanist and sympathetic sense of the comedic. ‐Mike Ladd From Hiroshima to reality TV, this collection manages to swing between soulful and hilarious without putting a foot out of place. Brave, beautiful and irreverent. ‐Rachael Mead

"No need to get all huffy with me, Celeste," Grandma Eleanor hissed, "I am not the one with the dubious initials scrawled across my arse." Eleanor's rags to riches story begins the day she meets Robert Harding, in April 1948. Robert's good looks do play a minor part in Eleanor's attraction to him, but the silver spoon protruding from his mouth most definitely clinches the deal. From the moment Eleanor meets Robert's mother Rose, beaming at her from the front steps of their six bedroom, four bathroom mansion bequeathed to her by her late husband Samuel, Robert's father, she senses Rose is the type of woman who will take her under her wing and nurture her. A kind and sincere woman, yet emotionally vulnerable like her son, eager to lick Eleanor's wounds and make it all better. Eleanor's world collapses when Robert is killed in a car accident, leaving her with four year old twin boys, a two year old girl and nothing more than a less than adequate insurance policy. Robert's death throws Rose into the depths of depression, leaving Eleanor to support her mother‐in‐law emotionally, ensuring Rose will continue to support her financially. Like mother, like daughter...the master and the apprentice of manipulation. Celeste Harding, begins her story as a fifteen year old in 1967, mourning the loss of her beloved Grandma Rose. Eleanor, convinced she is about to inherit the family home, known as Harding House, is confident Rose being out of the picture will ultimately bring her daughter Celeste, closer. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Author Information I believe my story is one of fate, as becoming a writer had never entered my head, let alone delving into the world of self publishing. I have to wonder where life would have taken me if in 2006 I hadn’t been asked to write a children’s story for a friend to put together as a marketing exercise as part of her university course. Back then I had no idea I even had the ability to write – now I can’t imagine not writing. Fate intervened for a second time in 2007, placing an amazing graphic artist right there in front of me at our local library. A friendly chat, followed by coffee the next morning and we were on our way to bringing my words to life with wonderful illustrations. They say ‘three times proves it,’ and in my case it’s true. I had many stories ready to illustrate, but one in particular was my favourite and in my mind it had to be book number three. My illustrator wasn’t keen on my choice as she hates spiders and as luck would have it, I just happened to run into a young mum working at our local bank who had bought a copy of my first book for her son. As it turns out, she had been on maternity leave for twelve months and right when I needed another illustrator, there she was. We have now published three children’s picture books, a chapter book for older children and my first novel in the women’s fiction genre. Glen Heather is a land of generations, and every generation is centred around one extraordinary woman. Spanning from the 1800's until the end of World War 1, the women of Glen Heather have been pushing boundaries in a world where women had to fight for their respect. Three inspiring tales from Tasmania during its colonisation; with brave Ness making a home in a new world, daring Isobel who can do any job as well as a man, and determined Alice who will do anything to protect her home. Each generation leaves their mark on the land, and on history.

Norah is bothered by an annoying inkling that her aloneness may in fact be making her lonely. When her mother goes into hospital for breast cancer treatment and her younger, more flamboyant and emotionally high maintenance sister Geraldina comes to stay and announces her unexpected pregnancy, Norah is definitely thrown from her comfort zone. But it is when the awkward Dr. Gregg Griffin enters the picture that Norah really starts to realize that her life is missing something and she embarks on an intimate struggle with herself to allow change. But can a visiting cat, a pair of borrowed red high heels and a late night passion for playing piano alone, really be enough to bring one lonely soul out of her fears and into the arms of a quiet life fulfilled?

This book is the celebration of three distinctive characters, thrown together by fate to create a restaurant nobody believed in. Together with a collection of recipes collated from the kitchens of both Red Spice Road restaurants and the team of talent therein, this book shares the highs and lows of operating a restaurant in a city that loves its restaurants ‐ Melbourne. The book is edited by someone who could only be described as Melbourne food press royalty Rita Erlich, who effortlessly brings a sense of order to the words. Rita's long experience includes longterm co‐editing of The Age Good Food Guide, editing magazines, writing columns, demonstrating and lecturing, and writing books, most recently Melbourne by Menu: the story of Melbourne's restaurant revolution. The photographs are beautifully shot by Juanita McCleary ‐ a very dear friend of the restaurants and a very patient lady. Her eye for detail and her ability to shoot some sixteen recipes in a short day has made her contribution to this book extremely welcome, and tantamount to its success. We hope you find this story as enjoyable to read as it was for us to write and share.
Author Information Andrew Cameron is the brains and the bucks behind the Red Spice Road restaurants. A restaurateur by default, Andrew has his finger in a lot of pies including furniture design, and photography to name just two. But when he is not in the restaurants trying to leverage one of his ideas or concepts or putting the boot up John or Gavin, you'll find him at his desk at Cliftons Training Rooms, the company that helped start this all and kept this mob in a job. Without him, none of this would be possible, and the other two would most certainly have wound up in the gutter somewhere. John McLeay is the Executive Chef and the creative spirit behind the restaurant. A man with his finger on all things Asian (culinary‐wise), John excels at trying something on a street in Pattaya and (through a lot of trial and error)

Nothing much happened in the seaside town of Calder Cove. Nothing that is until, with a grand and bizarre opening, a mysterious castle is revealed, out of the darkness and silence of nowhere. Townsfolk wondered was it magic? Or something more sinister? When the invited children finally step inside, the huge doors are locked, separating them from the world. It is with great trepidation that they are thrown – without warning – into the unknown and ask … is this place really a school? They get much more than they bargain for when they stumble upon magical rooms and hidden passageways, a golden door and, most horrifically, their own doom! Merlin’s School for Ordinary Children – The Ring of Curses is jam packed with magic and adventure – a timely cross between Enid Blyton’s Famous Five with a hint of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter. Author Information Born in 1952, Margaret emigrated with her family from England in 1961. Her work-life has varied, including many years as a graphic designer in the textile industry, a commissioned artist in oils and other mediums, and even working on a farm. She has two grown children. Since retirement, she has co-founded a support group for Camp Quality and written a monthly book review for the local newsletter. She has been writing for twenty odd years, exploring poetry, playwriting, and fantasy. Being an avid reader, she has a love for all books, especially children’s chapter books and it was this love that inspired her to delve into the magic and imagination of these wonderful stories and write her own. The result is Ring of Curses – Merlin’s School for Ordinary Children Book One, which is her first published novel, written whilst living in a small seaside town on the east coast of Tasmania. She is now living in Queensland.

The fantastic tale of a young Balinese duck who races against time to find his fallen ancestral home, the Kingdom of Ducktopia, to unlock the answers to restore balance to Bali and the planet before it is too late...Classic adventure-fantasy with an environmental message in a class story-telling voice. He lives an idyllic life by a pond in Bali with his family of orphaned ducks, the Bootongs, cared for by Suki. Life's turned upside down when he stumbles onto a secret meeting held by the leader of the fish, Agung. He learns of a royal heritage, a fallen Kingdom and of the future of Bali - its environment and culture threatened by rampant development. Caught eavesdropping, plans are propelled forward and he is commanded to recover an old Manuscript from the ruins of the Kingdom of Ducktopia which contain the answers to not only save Bali, but the rest of the planet. But, he's followed by sibling Spotty, who carries bitterness from his past, believing that as the son of an exiled Prince, brother to the long-reigning King of Ducktopia, that he is the rightful King to the fallen throne. Cheeky sets off on a journey around Bali to report back to island elders the extent of change on the island. He is visited by ghosts of the past in his dreams, who show him a beautiful world that they must fight to restore. Along the way, he meets Star, an endangered White Starling and a number of other friends who help him with his quest. But meanwhile, Shadow, the spirit of darkness, lurks wherever he goes and threatens Cheeky's mission. In a shattering conclusion, evil forces seek to take control, as whoever is the first to unlock it will receive the ultimate prize - rulership of the Kingdom of Ducktopia and effectively, the island. A fast-paced tale that will leave young readers intrigued and with an indelible desire to help make a difference. With beautiful illustrations by Clare McAlaney, this is a book that will take a treasured place on your bookshelf.

Brave Charlie D is a dugong who lives in Australian waters with his large family. One day he bids goodbye to all his relatives, and sets off on an adventure to discover new worlds and learn new skills ‐ the most courageous dugong of them all! A picture book told in rhyme. About the Author: Born to Russian parents during Japanese occupation in Northern China, Alec Trost spent his childhood in one of the coldest towns on earth, near the Mongolian Border. He learned to love literature from an early age and started writing short stories and poems for his family and friends. After emigrating to Australia, Alec graduated in electrical engineering and worked in many different roles, including some around Australia and overseas. Seeing animals struggling around the world reinforced his belief that we all need to do more to take better care of them. He has also been a keen community volunteer. After seeing the orphaned dugongs at Sydney’s SEA LIFE Aquarium, he wrote The Bravest Dugong to raise awareness of dugongs’ plight. This is Alec’s first publication. About the Illustrator Graeme Compton is a piano teacher, visual artist and illustrator who works in portraiture and children’s book illustrations. His subjects and styles range from dragons to portraits, cartoons to realism, and he works in graphite, charcoal, ink and acrylic. A two-time finalist for the Mortimer Prize for Realism, Graeme was awarded Grand Champion in 2013 for his work ‘Egret on Tap’ in the Gunnedah Art Exhibition. Over the past two years, he has illustrated six children’s books, is currently completing his seventh and starting another commissioned portrait. In 2015, his realist paintings will be published in ‘Who’s Who in Visual Art – Masters of Realistic Imagery 2015-2016’.

This is the true story of a greedy little sheep who put her head into a bucket... and couldn't get it out! About the Author and Illustrator: Jemma Phillips is a designer, author and illustrator. Previously an artist of children’s walls and Christmas cards, her watercolour illustrations are inspired by childhood memories, animals and the English and Australian countryside. Jemma was born in Cambridge, England then moved to Melbourne, Australia as a child. She studied at Brighton Bay School of Art, Design and Photography before doing a Bachelor of Design at Monash University. She now lives on the Mornington Peninsula with her boyfriend, Denham, their two dogs, Bailey and Diesel, and cat, Charlotte. When she is not painting she is usually cooking and walking her dogs. Bucket Sheep is Jemma’s first children’s book, and she is currently illustrating The Incredible Edible Garden, by Victoria Breheny, to be released later in 2015.

Shhh! You must solemnly swear to use this wonderful collection of poetry only in non‐mum settings! When it’s time for a bit of silly, stinky, crazy fun, dads can really shine (or smell!). Tim Healy’s collection of verse is a dad‐friendly zone, taking a hilarious approach to all the yucky (and fun) things that mum just may not care for. Springing from real‐life scenarios, and some fantastical creations of fiction too, Don’t Tell Mum is a great way for dads to get stuck into the fun of reading and rhyme with their kids, all while touching on subjects dads can relate to. Tim wants dads to get silly with their kids, and relieve some of the seriousness that can come along with being a modern father.
Author Information Like all superhero authors, Tim Healy has an unassuming day job. By day he masquerades as a respectable IT Executive, and as a husband and father of three. The rest of the time, he’s an heroic writer of silly verse and champion of the ridiculous. Brisbane born and bred, above all else he enjoys time with his family. He also enjoys music, gardening, and running. According to his children he also likes shouting at the TV. That said, don’t let looks fool you. No matter how he looks and what he does by day, a book such as this can only be the product of a very evil yet creative mind.

Kids love Harriet! Harriet Clare is an amazing book. It makes you want to turn the page and see what happens next… I loved the book, I can’t wait for the next one! – Maya, age 8 The Harriet Clare series is unique in newly independent children’s fiction. You, the reader become Harriet’s new bestie. Harriet will ask you for advice, to draw a picture of your own BFF, or even to design a cool skateboard! A visual feast of fun, the Harriet Clare books draw in even the most reluctant of readers with charming illustrations, illustrated text and sketching activities. Harriet also encourages problem‐solving, self‐understanding and empathy in the reader. Harriet Clare is set apart from similar books on the market by its interactivity with the reader – Harriet asks children to participate in writing her diary and requests that the reader colour/draw/ write in the book! Author Louise Park has total book sales of over 3 million copies, and illustrator Marlene Monterrubio has a bright and fun illustration style perfected after two university degrees. Harriet is laugh-out-loud funny. And it’s a hoot to read aloud. Her everyday adventures will captivate children who will be able to relate to every big challenge she faces.
