Words from the Wise
July 2016 Ten minutes in Talkeetna. We are staying in Talkeetna AK on the trek to the BEA. I am told the mosquitoes are big, crazy and slow at this time of year. You could use them as cricket balls - they are that big. Coffee at Conscious Coffee is deliriously good. They have a 'books for loan' shelf with all those books that bypassed me in my youth either because I was too busy studying Australian history or fraternising. Anyhow last week I purchased another copy of One Day in the life of Ivan Denisovich, as I had still not read it and somehow I am drawn to reading Alexander Solzhenitsyn as again at that time of my life I was too busy reading George Johnston and then the world of Charmian Clift. I remember Claire Kearney (leviathan bookseller from the Hill of Content) in those days would never read a lot of Australian fiction as it simply was not good enough for her to read - how times change. Back to the reading journey; Lea pointed to a copy of the Dr Seuss biography Dr. Seuss & Mr Geisel in a second hand bookshop in Seattle. Mint condition and only US$10.00. I had met Ted Geisel and Audrey Stone Geisel years ago and wanted to read the whole story of Ted Geisel. The book explains everything and the growth of rights and co editions as well as some of the great corporate stuff. I really never understood why we had to treat him so carefully in those days when he toured, now in 2016 I finally understand. Oddly only last week his last book, Oh, the places you’ll go, once again hit the bestseller lists over here. My favourite was The Lorax as the themes are still so present today. We celebrate 25 years since the passing of Ted Geisel in September this year. The highlight of my reading over the last week was Noel Tovey’s work Little Black Bastard (originally published by Hachette). This has been quite a journey for me starting back in August last year after David Gaunt put Noel in contact with me. Noel was considering his options on his unpublished work with the working title And then I found Myself. After some discussion with Noel I then read his work in progress and was utterly compelled to take it further. Since then we have had many emails and hope the new work to be published with our distribution involvement. I purchased the eBook of LLB and found it a tragic story which fostered anger within me as well
as respect for the life of the author. Remarkably many of the author's early life in Melbourne actually crossed with some of the people who I first sold books to. Booksellers associated with Noel were the likes of Charles Dickens, Pat Smillie, Ian ONeil, and so on as Noel worked at Collins Book Depot. I then had the updated new file sent to me and was then so sure that both the old book and the new book would stand side by side as both require reading to really have the insight into this incredible Australian. I am meeting with Noel and Bruce Sims next week to put the next steps into this multi book story and really will work very hard to make the launch as one of our major author events for the second half of the year. I totally endorse his works and hope we can make them accessible in as many forms as possible. So for the print loyalists I have embarked with this author via two pdf's and then an eBook - all read via the iPad. On another subject one of the challenges the industry faces is the globalisation of content and the ripple effect inside the moat (Australia). We really can't stop how consumers determine how they will accept their content. All we can do is to position content to be best able to be discovered by consumers. Can I put it another way? Are there too many foreign published books stocked in Australia and not enough locally written books being pushed to the front of consumers? My views are not commonly accepted as I don't see the rebirthing or rebadging of works as publishing, they are really licensing agreements. Our real time should be spent on making the discoverability of locally authored works an industry obsession and with governmental support as well. I believe something like 30% of Americans support Amazon Prime and I don’t think Amazon Prime has any local product capability – like food, etc. We are yet to really become an Amazon destination. So the American paradox is that the “reading trade” wants to distance itself from Amazon and yet more people support Amazon than will vote in the Presidential Elections. Read an Australian authored book per week and see you in Canberra. DJ
July 2016 For many years IAD Press have very successfully used the imprint ‘Jukurrpa Books’ – Jukurrpa is a Warlpiri word meaning ‘Dreaming’, Story’ or ‘Law’. The Institute for Aboriginal Development (IAD) is committed to the promotion of cultural authority and recognition, and as IAD and IAD Press are situated on the banks of the Todd River in the heart of Arrernte country, our Board and our Elders believe that appropriate recognition and deference be given to the people on whose land IAD stands on by changing the imprint to ‘Angkitja Books’ – Angkitja is the Eastern, Central and Western Arrernte word for “keeping information safe for the future”. In this age when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and culture are so much under threat, it is appropriate to name our publishing label after a word that means keeping safe – keeping culture safe, keeping language safe. We all hope you will love our new range of products just as much as you have loved Jukurrpa. To our Warlpiri, Luritja, Pitjantjatjara and Yankunitjatjara friends – we thank you for allowing us to use your language for so many years on our products and we pay homage to your Elders both past and present who allowed us to do so.

At the 2013 election, many Australians expressed their concern with the chaos that surrounded the Labor minority governments of Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd. They gave their support to Tony Abbott as a Prime Minister who promised to put the grown-ups back in charge with stable and strong government; a government with no surprises. However, Tony Abbott's government proved to be anything but stable and Abbott’s party replaced him with Malcolm Turnbull within two years. Promising a new direction, Turnbull committed to a new style of leadership, an end to policy on the run and a more open government. This volume, the twelfth in the Australia Commonwealth Government series, traces the key issues that characterised the Abbott and Turnbull administrations from 2013 to 2016. It comprises 16 essays written by noted academics and political commentators and covers a range of topics including leadership, the economy, asylum seeker policy, education, the role of the independents in the Senate, the environment and the changing face of the Australian electorate. Discussion in the book focuses on issues that invite readers to consider whether or not the change from Abbott to Turnbull did provide a new direction for the government, a matter that occupies many voters as they consider their vote in the July 2016 double dissolution election. From Abbott to Turnbull is being produced by the Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis at the University of Canberra. It will be available shortly after the Federal Election in July 2016.

The charms of the Dandenong Ranges - the majestic call of the lyrebird, steam whistles in the distance, the unmistakable smell of the forest after rain, the colours of spring and autumn, the timeless atmosphere of the Cuckoo Restaurant. The Dandenong Ranges are a series of ridges and gullies of great natural and man‐made beauty, situated 40 km to the east of Melbourne. Originally explored and exploited for its magnificent stands of tall timber, permanent settlement soon followed, with the rich volcanic soil and high rainfall making the region perfect for agricultural pursuits. Boasting fresh air, majestic forests, intriguing wildlife and beautiful gardens, the Dandenongs became a tourism favourite, and a multitude of charming guesthouses, tea rooms and restaurants sprang up to cater for the demand. By the 1950s, Melburnians were flocking to attractions such as the Puffing Billy Railway, the Cuckoo Restaurant, the Tesselaar Tulip Farm and the William Ricketts Sanctuary, and today the hills are more popular than ever. This publication explores the fascinating history of the Dandenongs, with tales of timber, gold and pioneer settlers, along with the tragic story of the Kyeema airliner disaster, and chilling accounts of the 1962 and 1983 bushfires. The unique fauna and flora of the Dandenongs is featured, including the famous Superb Lyrebird ‐ one of Australia's most alluring creatures.

“Life as it is”, is what it is‐My Life! My name is Rebecca Burge and I haven’t always lived on a cattle property in far North Queensland. I was born and bred in Adelaide, South Australia. Growing up in the small country town of Gawler and then spending all my secondary years in Adelaide. The story only touches on my early years and is predominantly about my years on Lamonds Lagoon Station, North Queensland. I married a “cattle man” and moved from the comforts of city life to the isolation of the bush. It is about all the little stories along the way and some of the different experiences I have had to deal with. Lamonds Lagoon is four to five hours from the major towns of Charters Towers, Townsville and Cairns. I educated my five boys through Distance Education to the end of year 7. The boys all have their different personalities and this is characterised in this story. If something is to go wrong, it will. This has only made our life more interesting with many a story to tell. There have been countless snake stories, many animal stories. There have been dramas in the classroom. We have had some interesting Christmas’s and a couple of bush christenings. We have experienced all the elements when it comes to disasters. The floods of 2009, Cyclone Yasi, which we are still recovering from and then the bushfires. Droughts are upon us at the moment. In summary, I moved out of my comfort zone into an unknown “world” away from family, friends and shops. I have experienced so much in these years and it has not always been easy but what stands out beyond all doubt is how Author Information I am Rebecca Burge and I have not always lived on a cattle property in North Queensland. I grew up in Adelaide, South Australia. I completed my nursing before heading overseas for some time. On returning I married Richard and we moved to Charters Towers where we ran a newsagency for about ten years, while dreaming of owning a cattle property one day. Eventually we bought Lamonds Lagoon Station, four hours north of Charters Towers. This has been home to us and our five boys for the last fourteen years. I taught all the boys through Distance Education, which was not an easy task and none of them were ideal students. There have been many interesting stories along the way and we have experienced all elements of nature. I feel very blessed to have five healthy active boys all with varying personalities and a wonderful husband who I love dearly. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else and whatever befalls us does not really matter as long as we are all healthy and happy. In the 1930s Australia was in the grip of the Great Depression, a time when many people were hungry and homeless. Although Joan Krohn was born into this era, fate was kind to her. She was fortunate enough to live with her grandparents, who were a little better off than others, and they filled her life with love and happiness. Then, the unexpected death of Joan’s grandmother changed everything. That one event set the stage for a lifetime marked by both joy and tragedy, and a life of constant self‐discovery. From an enclosed life on the family homestead to freely travelling around the world, Joan — daughter, teacher, singer, mother and more — has seen a lot and has an engaging story to tell from her time playing life’s game of snakes and ladders.
Author Information Joan Krohn was a teacher for many years and has travelled extensively. She has always taken a keen interest in history, art and music; for years sold her paintings at art shows under her maiden name of Hughes. In recent years she has been a member of the Belmont Scribes Writers, contributing to their short story collection. AVAILABLE NOW

Available Now Melbourne, 1970. Arnold is a first year resident at the Royal. It is a year of bridging: from medical student to doctor, child to adult, from mindless obedience to independent thought. Working endless hours in a hospital that seems to value tradition over competence, Arnold and his fellow residents comically bumble along. The only constant are his nightmares: a phobia of police. Despite his fears, it is Arnold who breathlessly calls the police to say he witnessed Petr stab Greg outside the hospital. Greg is a fellow resident doctor and Arnold's closest friend while Petr is a recently arrived immigrant working on the construction of the Westgate Bridge. So what brings these two seemingly unconnected men together in such a dramatic way? In this dark yet comic tale of coming of age we meet those born in the aftermath of the Holocaust, self‐absorbed and ignorant of the shadow it casts over their lives. There are many bridges to be crossed that year. But not all of them will remain standing. Author Information Joe Reich is an ophthalmologist practicing in Melbourne whose past writing has mostly been technical in the field of medical education or in preparation for a number of comedy debates. Shortlisted in the Women's Weekly Short Story Competition in 2009, this his first novel completes that story.

The story is set in the 1850s and begins in County Clare, Ireland. A young Irishman Michael Keogh, a shipwright, returns home to assist Edmund, father in his small farm. Simultaneously, a wealthy British Army Officer, John Hall, arrives at a posting in the town ofKilrush, County Clare. Both eventually travel to Australia in the eventful 1850s, together with an erratic and devious Colonel Paul Lang. The picturesque Clare country side becomes the backdrop to the dramatic death of a vicious Constable and brings Michael to the attention of the authorities. During this time Michael helps an Irish rebel, Brendan Devlin, to escape to America. Later Brendan would repay this favour to Michael. A concurrent story also occurs in Clare. During an eviction of a poor farmer, Michael is arrested charged and sentenced to seven years transportation to Van Diemen's Land. During Michael's arrest, Irish National treasures are confiscated by Colonel Lang, the devious Commanding Officer of John Hall's regiment. John Hall is made responsible for the Irish treasures. Colonel Paul Lang's son Frederick steals the treasures. Colonel Lang charges John Hall with dereliction of duty. Both are to resign. John Hall develops a romantic interest in Michael Keogh's sister Mauve. Michael has a rough and eventful sea voyage to Hobart and is then shipped to Port Arthur. A shipwright, he is employed in the boat building yard. His prison ordeals highlight the penal system at that time. He and fellow convict, Seamus Lynch, escape from Port Arthur. They learn shearing, change their names and become itinerant shearers

Finding Felicity is the story of a woman and her step‐daughter and tells how love within their family triumphs over serious relationship problems. There are psychological insights into grief and dysfunctional marriage, development of the characters as they deal with these situations and a suspenseful escape from Bangkok to Sydney. The setting is these two cities in 2006. Chapter One begins in Sydney with Lydia waking to face the funeral of her much‐loved husband, Richard. She is supported there by her step‐children, Richard’s son J.C. and daughter Margaret. At the wake, the question arises: why is Felicity (Fliss), the youngest step‐child, not there? Lydia has a hunch that something is wrong in Felicity’s life. When she visits the memorial garden where Richard’s ashes are scattered, she feels his presence and talks to him, as she does throughout the book. She vows to Richard to visit Bangkok and look into Felicity’s life there. On the flight to Thailand, Lydia reviews the experiences and characters of her three step‐children.
Author Information Author, blogger and retired journalist, Helen Briton Wheeler had a country childhood in South Australia and Queensland. After schooling in Brisbane, she studied graphic art and married a fellow art student from Thailand. The couple moved to Bangkok and then to a farming village outside the city. It was an opportunity for Helen to learn about another culture and worldview and, of course, the Thai language. The marriage foundered and Helen returned to Sydney, Australia, to make a home, bring up the couple’s two children and work as a journalist, principally as a magazine sub-editor. After she retired from journalism, Helen turned to writing fiction and self-published her first novel, Day of the Diamond Earrings. Finding Felicity is her second novel, the idea for the setting coming after a visit to family in Thailand. Helen blogs regularly on her site, Food & 42 (http://foodand42.blogspot.com.au) and has her own Facebook page.

This novel is set mainly in Australia in the late 1960s and the 1970s; a time characterised by social upheaval, organised crime supported by corrupt figures in positions of power, increased drug taking and the technological changes brought about by the emergence of smaller and faster computers. The Vietnam War divided the country and led to increasingly sophisticated channels of drug smuggling not just in Australia, but throughout the world. And the CIA, using Air America, was part of the supply chain. Against this backdrop, Jack and Terry, both aged 20, are the two main protagonists in the novel. They have grown up in a working class neighbourhood in Newcastle, with Terry’s parents being alcoholics and drug addicts. Their common love for surf lifesaving is increasingly the only thing that links them. But as their lives progress, the pair choose widely diverging paths – Jack plunging into the new world of computers at University, and Terry into increasingly risky links to organised crime and the Heroin trade coming out of the Golden Triangle in Asia. But despite a growing antipathy towards each other, their lives keep intersecting, firstly in Vietnam as National Servicemen, then later in connection with the Nugan Hand Bank, a shady financial institution based in Australia but with tentacles spreading across the world. As the clashes between Terry and Jack grow more heated, this impacts on friends, lovers and family. One thing is for sure ‐ no one will be the same afterward.
Author Information Born in Newcastle, Australia, David joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1972 and found himself onboard HMAS Sydney on its final trip to Vietnam. After 24 years of Navy service David com‐menced a new career in consulting before retiring in 2009. David is married, with four adult children and two grandchildren. When he is not writing, David enjoys cooking, loves a glass of red wine and accompanies the family dog on twice daily excursions.

But she hasn't planned on being a fourteen year old mum, or on the move to London, where life could be fun... Red Moon: Secrets of a sixties schoolgirl is based on the author's life in the mid‐1960s, UK. The way we live now has its roots much further back in history. Do you ever wonder how we came to have seven days in a week, and when we divided off two as the weekend? Why some countries drive on the right and others on the left? When we first started to use spectacles, or plant gardens for pleasure, not just for food? Or why Christians, Jews and Muslims all regard Jerusalem as a holy city? Over eight themed chapters, How it all started takes these and more than 150 similarly intriguing questions about familiar aspects of our daily lives and traces the complex political, social, religious and cultural factors that have shaped our modern world. ‐Answers more than 150 intriguing questions ‐Fascinating information presented in an engaging and highly readable way ‐Deals with the little things as well as the big, from when and why we began to use forks to questions of war and peace and the location of national borders ‐Topics chosen because there is no immediately obvious explanation as to why we have ended up with the situations we have today ‐More than 700 photographs, charts and maps help explain and expand answers

This remarkable book challenges and expands our understanding of our beautiful and mysterious planet. Would you believe that it snows in the Sahara Desert; that the 2011 Japanese earthquake was so powerful that it slowed Earth's rotation; that Niagara Falls can freeze over; that the kangaroo rat can live its entire life without drinking a drop of water? Extreme Earth isn't just a list of the usual records about Earth - the highest, the longest, the hottest - it is also a powerful tool to understanding our ever-changing planet and discovering the ingenious ways in which plants and animals have evolved over time to survive. You'll marvel at the stunning images and the stories behind them.

The First World War was an unprecedented conflict that reshaped the global political landscape and modern attitudes to warfare, valour and patriotism. And for the fledgling nations of Australia and New Zealand it was yet more: the cauldron in which their identities were forged, the international stage on which they first performed and drew praise, the foundation of many of their institutions and traditions. This handsomely produced volume recounts the traumatic years of 1914 to 1918 through the 'voices' of those involved - the diaries and letters of officers, soldiers and nurses; the pronouncements of politicians and strategists; the songs sung on marches and in concert halls; the poems and memoirs that questioned the war, celebrated its victories and lamented its calamitous losses. Richly illustrated, it is a fascinating history, a beautiful commemorative keepsake, and a moving tribute to those who fought to defend their way of life.

Research confirms that the very best remedy for high blood pressure, better than any pill, is to eat a diet full of fresh produce rich in nutrients and low in sodium. And that's where this cookbook comes in. It is based on DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), the proven, gold-standard eating plan for reducing high blood pressure, which, if left unchecked, can lead to heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. The heroes of this regimen are fruits, vegetables, fatfree or low-fat dairy products, whole grains, seeds and nuts, fish, poultry and legumes. Plus, using ingredients such as herbs and spices will help reduce a dependency on saturated fats, sugars and salt. There's no need to cook separate meals for the person with high blood pressure - everyone will enjoy these recipes, too.

The Harriet Clare series is unique in newly independent children’s fiction. In the fifth instalment of this popular series, Mystery Dare, join Harriet as she heads of on a family holiday! This is a fun, Scooby‐Doo‐mystery type title with new Harriet laugh‐out‐loud moments. In previous titles she gets anxious, doesn’t practise her ballet, gets worried at giving speeches and finds it hard to make friends easily. Harriet has had a learning curve though and is more together in this title, showing a Harriet that is growing up. A visual feast and explosion of fun, the Harriet Clare books draw in even the most reluctant of readers with charming illustrations, illustrated text and sketching activities. Harriet also encourages problem‐solving, self‐understanding and empathy in the reader.

George Augustus Robinson was appointed Protector of Aborigines in Van Diemen's land and in the Port Phillip district in the 1830s and 1840s. He wasn't much of a protector! In truth, no individual could have done much better. There was a war on: a battle over the land, in which the Aboriginal people were outnumbered and outgunned. On the positive side, George did try to understand the culture and language of the Aboriginal people with whom he came into contact. Not many others did! This little book is a small step towards righting an old wrong.

Taken out of an orphanage and put to work as domestic servants in Tasmania’s early colonial days, several children find themselves treated like slaves. A carefully planned escape sees them flee into the forbidding southern wilderness. It is beautiful but dangerous, and to survive the children have to rely on ingenuity, determination and a fierce desire to forge the sort of family ties and loyalty they have never previously known. Max Campbell is a true storyteller. His engaging style will enchant children and transport adults back to their own youth.

Our Gang: In 1950s Australia, boy heaven was a clubhouse for your gang, even if it meant having to accept a girl member into the group. But when the gang finds clues leading to real‐life sunken treasure, and some baddies arrive in search of that treasure, both the girl and the clubhouse prove indispensable. Martial Law: In the late 1960s eight school children are forced to defend their town from a raging bushfire after they find themselves left behind in an abandoned forestry settlement.

John was a forestry worker responsible for looking after protected forests. His job was to make sure people weren’t cutting trees down or stealing precious plants and endangering the forest’s ecosystems. But today he was on holiday getting a much deserved rest, and he knew no better place to rest than in the forest which he loved so much. Lisa also loved nature, and they both wanted their baby daughter to love nature as much as they did. On the drive to their campsite a couple days before, the little family had stopped at a local shop to look at some antiques. There were some beautiful pendant necklaces said to protect whoever wore them. In the spirit of fun, John bought one each for his wife and baby. Although the chain was much too long for one so small, John had immediately fastened one of the pendants around the baby’s neck. Instead of wearing hers, Lisa had fastened her necklace to the wrist strap attached to her camera. They lived only a short drive from this forest, but they wanted to explore parts of it at their leisure—something John couldn’t do with his family when he was working. Today they were going to hike to the top of the mountain near their camp. They readied their supplies and put the baby into a backpack on John’s back. They put out the fire from the night before and headed off on their hike, leaving some of their gear at the campsite. They knew no one else would be in the forest at this time of year and their campsite would be safe.
Author Information When Monica was a child she had imaginary friends and she thought everyone could see them. As she got older Monica was told that no one else could see her friends. When she grew up and was on her own spiritual journey she found that it was quite common for children to have imaginary friends. So she got out there and found out what all this was about. Monica did healing work on people and found that they still had their imaginary friends with them. But she knew that they were their family that had crossed over. She also found that a lot of children of all ages could see them but were frightened by them. She leant the valuable properties of crystals and how to use them in her healing work. Learning about the past and our future is exciting and she is happy to share her knowledge with others which she regularly does. So in writing her book as an adventure, she hopes she can help children go out and explore the possibilities that are in our world. Don’t be frightened, Monica says, of your abilities … find someone who can teach you their knowledge.

In a small garden cottage, Flossie the fairy lives in the red handbag of an unsuspecting elderly lady. Each day, she takes joy in dancing to the magical music of her host … until the day comes when the music stops and Flossie must find a new companion and a new tune to sing to. A gentle, heartfelt tale of finding joy after loss.
Author Information Nancy Watson was raised on the land in the Yass and Young districts of NSW, her father being a grazier of wool and wheat. In Young, she was school captain in 1959, and then worked in the banking industry until she married in 1965. Raised with a love of music, she played piano for a number of years and loved singing in local musicals in her early life. After raising two children, she re-entered the workforce and worked for a coal mining company in the Lake Macquarie area for 17 years. Her interest in writing remained constant throughout her early career, but did not take off until she had a travel article published in 2013. Then in 2015, she joined a creative writing group through U3A, where she had an unexpected inspiration to write about Flossie the fairy … perhaps influenced by the memory of a little moss fairy garden she had as a child. Nancy has lived for the past 30 years on the western edge of Lake Macquarie; the many moods of the lake never disappear.
Illustrator Information Natasha has been drawing for as long as she can remember. Despite graduating from a double Bachelor’s degree in Music and Education (Honours) at the University of New South Wales, she has returned to illustrating, studying picture book illustration under Donna Rawlins and Wayne Harris. Natasha sells prints and cards, has taught art classes for children and has painted numerous freelance and commissioned works. She works mainly with watercolours, creating paintings that are sweet, whimsical and colourful. Flossie the Fairy is Natasha’s first illustrated picture book.

Join Charlie and his family, and follow their adventure across the world on your very own ‘Charlie’s Adventures’ map!
Author Information Jacqueline is an Australian author who adores exploring all the world has to offer! Her love of travel started at age three when moving from Sri Lanka to Australia with her parents. Having family sprinkled around the world, she has lived, worked and been on many adventures overseas. Her infatuation with the vibrancy found in each culture led her to complete a degree in the social sciences, undertake a Masters in International Development and work in international affairs. She currently resides in Canberra with her Irish South African husband (who she met on an escapade in America), her one year old daughter and beagle puppy. Her appreciation of travel and uniqueness of culture has inspired her to begin writing for children. Charlie’s Adventures in Hawaii is her first book. She hopes that Charlie’s Adventures will encourage children to learn more about the world, and journey far and wide in discovering, appreciating and understanding.
Illustrator Information Sophie’s artistic talents were soon discovered by New Frontier Publishing, as a work experience student there. She has written and illustrated her own book, Lisa Absolutely Loves Art, and her illustrated work for Yellow Dress Day put her on the shortlist for the 2013 CBCA Crichton Award. Her other illustrated works include Matilda Saves Santa Claus, Emilia Mouse, Elephant Kitten and Where Do Teachers Go at Night? Sophie enjoys playing across styles and mediums of illustration.
