Words From Dennis I am still reading the Peter Fitzsimons Ned Kelly from my iPad; I realise my recreational reading time is limited. I like this book as the author and his team have produced a lasting testament to time people and place. I then thought how we get our best reads across to you the booksellers and I am generally not satisfied with how we do it. The majors can fly a group of booksellers to hear an old politician extol the virtues of their next book; the booths at Conferences have a knot of booksellers at the foot of those major publishers, we sort of have to hunt the aisles for old friends and force a reading copy into a carry bag. Whilst we are planning to be able to comp eBook editions of new releases most booksellers either don’t read eBooks or dislike a pdf. So I am going to offer our publishers a system whereby a reading copy of suitable books will be sent out with our deliveries. This would be for the next 100 booksellers orders being despatched. Once we have used the allocation, move onto the next of our “bookseller choice” sampled books. They would be identified, as the only other time we did a mass sending like this the free books ended up in too many booksellers returns. At the heart of this is that the best asset an industry has is not the supply chain, it is what is in the supply chain – yes the written word or as I frequently call it – content. Times don’t change as back in the 70’s when I started I always listened to the best hand sellers of all time – my famous bosses at Collins. What has changed is simply the diversity of writing and the plethora of content. I hope I can identify the personal choice awards so as we can send out those reading copies. Last night I attended the Howard Goldenberg event at Readings Hawthorn – huge appreciative crowd – maybe 80 people and Howard being Howard. If you would like Howard to do some in store work please ask. I also had a great email from Beaumaris Books asking about the availability of Bronte Dee Jackson, author of Roman Daze, as Bronte would fit an author event with one the stores Italian centric reading groups.

One of our May books has had some exceptional sales via eBook as this is the platform most easily accessible for this piece of fiction – it is the Guy Hallowes book Icefall – it shot up the category of Science Fiction & Fantasy > Science Fiction > PostApocalyptic to the #1 position on Amazon Australia and is selling faster than its print edition at this stage. The publisher hired Scott Eathorne’s Quickmark PR firm to roll out the media and it is having a global effect based on the eBook sales and then the print sales gradually emerge. Good news is that we will have the next Blanche d’Alpuget for October together with a Debbie McInnes PR campaign. You may recall you were all part of the Get Reading 2013 campaign which made part one of this series a Top 50 book last year – 9780732296698 The Young Lion. If you give the second part of the series the same support I will be delighted. The book is going through the design stage and final edit currently. If anyone would like, Blanche will be available from October onwards for author appearances and we would be keen to lock away those times for any appearances. I think most of you know I have been helping Gardners as a sales agent in my time post Ingram. Over the past I have thought of various non stocking strategies to do with imported books and now a major one has happened with Gardners where they have been appointed exclusive distributor into Australia for Taschen. Without going into warp speed it means constant stock availability, new titles being available simultaneously with all global markets and simply better customer service. This is fortuitous as it now compliments the Gardners air freight offering to Australia of about six days. If anyone needs more information please contact either Ian Roberts (International Sales Manager) ian.roberts@gardners.com or myself. Good selling and I hope you enjoy our July new releases – meant to say I think the new Jukurrpa images are so contemporary – hope you agree. DJ

PRO HART was without doubt the most enigmatic figure in Australian art of the late twentieth century. The proposition that an individual could be considered a near genius by some, be recognised and loved by millions, yet scorned, derided or at best ignored by expert opinion was the constant contradiction that marked his life. His works can be found in more Australian homes and collections than any other artist, yet are almost entirely unrepresented in the major galleries at state and national level. Nearly a decade after his death he remains the most recognisable and popular Australian artist, the subject of hundreds of newspaper and magazine stories, TV shows and advertisements. He is however remarkably absent from the fine art media, critical reviews and journals of record. Can one be described as being ‘without a doubt the greatest artist in our nation’s history’, yet also be considered a ‘parish pump incompetent’, meretricious and a charlatan? That is the paradox of Pro Hart. To be an artist, a one‐man industry turning over more than one million dollars a year, yet fly beneath the radar of serious art. He was not alone in that odd corner of the art world, yet he was the extreme and most obvious example. How that situation arose and what it says about Australian art, society and culture is the story to be told. About the Author Gavin Fry is an arts writer, publisher and museum professional. After working as a teacher and art lecturer in Victoria he began his Museum career as Curator of Art at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra in 1980. He was appointed Deputy Director of the Australian National Maritime Museum, Sydney in 1987 and Secretary to the Centenary of Federation Advisory Committee, Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet in 1994. He is the author of twenty books on Australian art and history and is a publisher of books on art, history and military subjects. Gavin holds the degrees of Bachelor of Arts [Honours] and Master of Arts in Visual Arts from Monash University and Master of Philosophy in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester. Now in retirement, he lives and works in Newcastle, New South Wales.

The Flora of Melbourne is a resource that assists in the recognition and botanical identification of species while encouraging an awareness of the interrelationships between indigenous plants and animals. It identifies the usefulness of these species, to the local Aborigines in the past, and to all who wish to understand our diminishing natural environment in the present. The Flora of Melbourne works on a few different levels. It provides an important record of the plant life that developed in the Greater Melbourne area over a long period of time. It indicates the probable distribution of plant communities and the species within them prior to European settlement, based on historical data, remnant vegetation, and the prevailing climatic and soil conditions of each area. At another level it records the breakdown of these important relationships that has led to both the extinction of individual species and the reduction in the range of species from a number of locations across the entire Melbourne area. Finally, Flora of Melbourne is a tool to help us nurture or repair such relationships in an attempt to maintain or re‐establish these habitats and the plants within them. ❀ Covers enlarged Greater Melbourne area ❀ Contains 1367 plant descriptions with photos and fine line drawings ❀ Instant, colour-coded access to different plant families (Irises, Grasses, Orchids, Rushes, etc.) ❀ Improved, easy-to-use cross-reference system for finding plants native to specific localities ❀ Expanded list of 220 representative localities with 5 key maps ❀ Separate chapters on Soils, Weeds and Revegetation ❀ Habitat chapter covers Melbourne’s 79 Ecological Vegetation Classes ❀ Symbols for bird- and butterfly-attracting plants ❀ Large-format, 624 pp, Hardback

Tony Harrison has lived the life of a professional snake catcher for twenty years. In this book, he introduces you to the reptiles most commonly encountered in our cities and towns, including some of the most venomous snakes on earth. Tony has spent his whole life surrounded by reptiles. His work and his animals are regularly featured on TV and in movies. That means he has a tale or two to tell. In Snake Catcher, Tony shares entertaining and informative stories, written by award‐winning Australian writer, David Blissett. You are part of the action as Tony enters a suburban bedroom to bag a large and lethal Eastern Brown Snake. You will meet Tiger, the Lace Monitor who is afraid of heights. And you will find out what happens when you try to flush a venomous snake down the toilet. However, more than telling great stories and showing great pictures, this book has another purpose. Tony wants to dispel the myth that ‘the only good snake is a dead snake.’ He shares his insights into some truly fascinating reptiles, and gives common‐sense advice about living safely with them. Snake Catcher includes information on: • The most commonly encountered Australian reptiles, complete with stunning full‐colour photos. • What to do if you encounter a snake at home or in the bush. • How to discourage dangerous snakes from entering your property. • The benefits of having some snake species living nearby. • How to treat a snake bite. • How to protect your pets from run‐ins with snakes. • Some of the rules about keeping reptiles for yourself.

Col Elliott has become one of Australia's favourite entertainers. Most know him from his many albums, television appearances, live work and DVD’s ... However, there is a whole lot more to this man, whose own life story will surprise and delight! From a ten quid Pommie, to a life in poor working‐class Melbourne. In the stables at 14, to the Navy at 16, and sent to Vietnam at 17 ... old enough to serve, yet too young to vote or drink. He writes a graphic account of gun‐line operations in North Vietnam. Still a kid, surrounded by danger, and under fire. Life before show business was as a Navy Sonar Operator, and eventual Instructor. He spent his 18th birthday in Vietnam, as part of the rescue team, when the USS Forestal lost 134 brave souls. At 19, he was part of the rescue team that operated when the ‘Melbourne’ cut the ‘U.S.S. Frank. E. Evans’ in half ... 74 men died that morning. Col’s early life is related with much humour and honesty. And throughout the book, you continue to follow his journey, as he and a rag tag bunch of unlikely heroes, travel to exotic and often dangerous ports, as a rough and ready band of wandering minstrels. Through all of this, humour plays an integral part. This is a story of survival and as a reader; Col gives you an insight into his battles with depression, alcoholism and at just 37, a major heart attack. He regroups and emerges unbeaten. It tells of his rise through the tough ranks of Aussie comedy, of many long and wonderful, event‐ filled years of marriage, three daughters, several grandchildren and growing. When asked, his wife, Karen, states “it has never been boring!” This is an Australian story that covers all bases. Belly laughs, Aussie humour, adversity, pathos, mateship, action and adventure. Col Elliott's story will surprise many ... An enthralling read. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

Col Elliott

About the Author Col Elliott has been pushing our belly-laugh buttons for over 40 years. He is one of Australia's most loved and in demand performers. Col takes his audience on an incredible ride with his stand-up, his zany characters and his unique brand of story-telling and music ......He does it all. His many album and DVD releases have not only given him gold and platinum status, but have generated a huge fan base which manages to cross all generational boundaries. His first taste of the business was in his Navy days, moonlighting in the bars of Singapore and Hong Kong for drinks and tips. He left the Navy in 1972 and as Col puts it, he wasn’t quite prepared for Civilian life. He joined the Navy as a boy of 16. Col said “I left the Navy with a basic knowledge of Bingo, I could ask for a beer in five different languages, and track a submarine, that didn’t exactly give me many options in the middle of Melbourne in 1972". He stumbled into show business in 1973. On the way to a gig, he knew that he needed tyres for his clapped out old car and the coppers had put it off the road - “...they didn’t like my Angry Anderson tyres"! He subsequently won the finals of “Kevin Dennis New Faces” a then Melbourne TV talent show. Over 40 years later Col says he’s got a garage full of tyres!!!! Col has created many memorable characters over the years and has featured them on his videos, DVD’s, CD’s and television shows. His latest creation is “Briden Backpack”, a hi-camp cowboy who is president of “The Country and Precious Western Club of Australia", Briden doesn’t do the Charlie Daniel’s Hit song “ The Devil went down to Georgia”, his version goes something like.. “Bruce went down to Sydney”, and must be heard to be believed. Col can adjust to any format, whether it be one of his own shows, television appearances or a corporate event. In his recent debut as a book-writer, he has opened up his life, for the scrutiny of all. Be amazed by his story of courage and determination as you read ‘In Between The Laughter’. Col never fails to entertain and his story-telling expertise allows you insights into the ups and downs, along his life’s journey, as he shares a few more laughs along the way.

The Victorian Railways of old was far more than just a transport business - it was a great railway family, where employees were treated as valued members of the organisation. Life on the Victorian Railways explores a bygone era, through the recollections and humorous stories of a selection of railwaymen who performed a variety of roles, such as Lad Labourer, Junior Clerk, Engine Cleaner, Steam Fitter, Train Guard, Passenger Train Conductor, Ticket Examiner, Station Master, Train Controller and District Superintendent. From the grimy North Melbourne Locomotive Depot to the glamorous Southern Aurora express train, dedicated railwaymen and women across the state carried out their often unseen duties, and contributed to the day‐to‐day operations of the grand, traditional old 'VR' - that proud institution now consigned to the pages of history.

Newtown has always been a place to shop. Since the 1870s visitors have caught the train, or later the omnibus or tram to shop along the high street of Newtown. The contempory stories and documentary photographs recorded by Nic Bezzina provide an intimate view of small business in the inner city. While individually they are charming vignettes, together the stories of Newtown Shopkeepers touch on larger historical themes of migration. Entrepreneurship, the retail economy and gentrification of the inner city. The photographs are portraits, but also studies of shop interiors. Over time these stories and photographs will become a vital addition to the historical record. Newtown Shopkeepers ia a celebration of one of Sydney's most valuable suburbs: it's a place that is bustling and always changing.

The story of the MTT’s Adelaide to Glenelg tram line has never been told before in such detail. It is the largest and most extensively researched work ever produced on the subject. ‘City & Glenelg’ begins with the story of the railway operations that served Glenelg which eventually proved inadequate and outdated as reliable transport to serve this outstanding residential suburb and holiday destination. The result was conversion in 1929 to Australia’s most‐up‐to‐date electric tram service. Never before has so much research eventuated in such detail of the concept, construction and operation of this successful electric tram service, operated for 46 years by the Municipal Tramway Trust. Beyond the MTT era the story concludes by showing with great pride the rejuvenation and operation of the tram service today. As South Australian an institution as pie‐floaters and Balfour’s frog cakes, the Bay Line as it is commonly known, has survived several near‐death experiences over the past eighty‐five years and now enjoys the status of a tourism icon as well as a highly effective Adelaide transport asset. Written by Brian Andrews in conjunction with Trevor Triplow, ‘City & Glenelg’ is a quality 290 page large format hard cover book complete with dust jacket and printed on quality art paper. It has more than 250 images with a special emphasis on its human side, the employees who operated and maintained it and the people who rode it. There are excellent maps, electrical distribution diagrams, press cuttings from across time and nostalgic advertisements. Most of the photographs have never been seen before culminating in an excellent production which vividly brings to life a significant era in Adelaide’s transportation history.

HIGHLY COMMENDED FOR THE 2014 FELLOWSHIP OF AUSTRALIAN WRITERS (FAW) BARBARA RAMSDEN AWARD From Johnny Fawkner's party landing on the Yarra in 1835, Melbourne had 55 years of rarely interrupted prosperity. It had come so easily few believed it would end. But it did end, just as financier, philanthropist and sportsman, Mark Moss was building his testament to his and the city's success - Norwood. This is a story of that house, its history and its people. But it is also more than that. This is a history of the settlement of Victoria and the rich background to the early formation of Melbourne. An explosion of advanced cultural and political developments followed on from a remarkable gold rush and its rebellion, to a city, with impressive boulevards, beautiful parks, palatial public and commercial buildings and opulent homes, like Norwood. Weaving the history of Norwood and its people with the story of Melbourne this is a rare insight into some of the people and events that shaped the early settlement and the growth of Victoria. In particular it follows the story of Mark Moss and his building of Norwood –often referred to as Moss’s folly - at the height of the boom. By tracing the evolution of the city of Melbourne through property acquisition, speculation and development cycles through to the mid 1900’s much is revealed. Including the influence of Norwood in the creation of the National Trust (Victoria). Of Norwood’s legacy Robin Boyd said: It changed (the) city’s face About the Author The author lived in Norwood as a young man from 1947 to 1955. His great uncle owned Norwood from 1917 to 1953. On investigating the house’s history he has found many surprises about its colourful past, and its connections with 'Marvellous Melbourne' and has woven these into the fabric of the story.

Libby Muller turned forty the same year as her young son, Joe, died suddenly at home in what was described as a freak accident. Libby relives, with a compelling, raw honesty, the heartbreak of what is one of the greatest sufferings imaginable – a mother’s loss of her only child. She explores grief in the first year after her son’s death. This journey starts as she navigates those first dark days of overwhelming sadness. But gradually the resilience of the human spirit shines. She finds solace in surfing, experiences the healing energy of the Torres Strait Islands and follows a deeply spiritual path in the search to find inner peace. What results is a deeper understanding of life and death. In sharing her story, Libby hopes to offer some comfort to others who may have also suffered the grief of losing a child. Two women worlds apart ... one secret that changes everything. Erin and Laura are cousins and best friends who share a love of languages and travel. Erin, a French teacher in Dublin, reaches crisis point and drops everything to move to Australia. In Sydney, not only does she land the perfect job, but she meets the perfect man. Finally, her life is falling into place. Except Sydney isn't home, and never can be. Back in Ireland, Laura is struggling. Her husband appears distant, her work life is spinning out of control and her daughter's strange new nanny is undermining her at every turn. She longs to travel in Erin's footsteps, to drop everything and run far away. But these are dangerous thoughts for a mother and wife. As Erin and Laura desperately try to find their place in the world, a shocking family secret comes to light, and nothing will ever be the same again. About the Author: Ber Carroll was born in Blarney, a small but famous village in Ireland. The middle child of six, she often retreated from the chaos of family life by immersing herself in books and she has fond memories of the mobile library bus that used to pull up outside their house in Blarney and the dozen or so books she would borrow at a time, some quite inappropriate for her age. Ber moved to Sydney in 1995 with her then partner now husband, Rob. She got a job as a finance manager in the IT industry and began to climb the corporate ladder. Though very focussed on her career, the exciting and dynamic work environment captured her imagination and inspired her first novel, Executive Affair. When Executive Affair was published, Ber flatly denied that it was in any way auto-biographical. She now admits that the novel did have a lot of her in it, but insists that she did not have an affair with the vice-president of the company, as did the character in the book. Ber has written three other novels since, Just Business, High Potential and The Better Woman and has been published in five countries. Reflecting her own experience, Ber writes about modern-day women who move back and forth between Ireland and Australia seeking adventure, change of lifestyle or career, and new beginnings. Ber continues to be fascinated with the strong links and contrasts between the two countries, what spurs people to move from one side of the world to the other, what keeps them

there or draws them back home, and the notion that distance alone can solve problems and heal wounds. Ber gave up her finance career when she realised that she couldn’t hold down a demanding job, be mum to two small children and write books to contractual deadline. She now writes fulltime, but says that she misses getting dressed up for work and being around people who listen to what she has to say, unlike her kids! Ber and her family return to Ireland almost every year on their ‘holidays’.

“Peter Clancy is an amalgam of characters from crime fiction and film noir—a world‐weary type” – The Daily Telegraph “Very definitely earning a place in the genre of murder‐mystery writing” ‐Blue Wolf Reviews. In the late 1980’s, Melbourne is gripped by an unprecedented crime wave, and has overtaken celebrity scandal as the talk of the town. In a bold move to increase flagging sales, the editor of Melbourne Truth appoints journalist Peter Clancy to head up an investigative crime column. Clancy is quickly caught up in a sinister plot involving drug importation and police corruption, and crosses paths with a series of shady characters, some of whom are willing sources, and others with the skill of camouflage. Along the way, Clancy meets a young lawyer and is instantly besotted with her—despite his colleagues who see something disturbing beneath her wholesome exterior. As Clancy falls into the murky underworld of Melbourne he attempts to discover if a series of murders are a turf war or a family feud. He must use his wits to expose the Thornydevils…. where nothing is as it seems. Thornydevils heralds the much anticipated return of hard‐living Melbourne Truth journalist, Peter Clancy. A ‘blue’ is an argument or a verbal stoush, mostly light hearted, and immediately forgivable in Australia. Its combatants are usually known to each other e.g. family, best friends, acquaintances etc. Life goes on after the ‘blue’. In this series of anecdotes, Richard Plant details in his usual humorous light‐hearted way the visits he and Katie made to holidays, hospitals, even hospices, and how an occasional ‘blue’ can assist the appreciation or otherwise of each. He also recalls lifestyles in the late 1940s and early ‘50s and compares them for better or for worse with those of the early 2010s. ‘Life’s a Blue’ is another eclectic series of tales based on fact, but perhaps embellished a little (or a lot) by ‘coulda‐ been or ‘shoulda‐been’ endings – each story an entity within itself.

Spineless Wonders

In 1738, English preacher, Isaac Watts wrote ‘The world to come’, a Christian tract about departed souls, death, and the glory or terror of the resurrection. Almost 300 years later the world to come still fascinates readers. It’s not only climate change, it’s the climate of everything: from technological ‘advances’ that threaten to create an immortal humanity; to an endless ‘war on terror,’ which means that, though we may never know war, nor will we ever truly know peace; to a thousand visions of post‐Apocalyptic life in the media. The world to come is everywhere; it is with us now… In this anthology, twenty‐one writers respond to the world to come – the one just around the corner, the hereafter and the everywhen. The World To Come is a truly international publication. Edited by Om Dwivedi (India) and Patrick West (Australia), it features talented new voices as well as established literary stars such as John Fulton (USA), Eunice Ngongkum (Africa), Dirk Strasser (Australia), Tabish Khair (India), Leone Ross (Jamaica), Tim Richards (Australia), Sébastien Doubinsky (France), John Shulman (India), Craig Cormick (Australia), Leah Swann (Australia) and First Nation writer, Marcus Waters.

‘The mobile phone has changed our ways of waiting and worrying. It has abolished the poetry of railway stations, driven the soul from railway platforms; we no longer feel that anxious rush when the passengers start to get out. We are secure in the knowledge that if the person we’re expecting had a problem, we would have got a call. ‘But technology can only move the emotions around, not get rid of them…’

Acclaimed French novelist Philippe Delerm brings a Parisian sensibility, full of irony and literary wit, to mediatized daily life as we all know it. In each of these ready‐made sentences he reveals a wealth of subtleties, little failings, wry humour. The truths of our lives. These little stories move from the tender to the mocking and the melancholy, alighting on meaning in the words which fail us, and the moments all of us – especially those who are older ‐ have lived. From birth in England to life in South Africa; from being a zealous atheist to a near-fatal crisis in a goldmine explosion; from disinterest in education to a voracious appetite for learning resulting in ten doctorates (and other degrees); from pastoring in South Africa to professorial work in the USA; and from the USA to Australia where for 30 years he taught at the Presbyterian Church of Queensland Theological Hall and as a barrister (one of his many accomplishments) won some significant battles for the Church: these describe the significant events in the life of an amazing mind, a humble heart, a loving husband and father, a powerful preacher, a multi-gifted man, theologian, author, artist, poet, but one who was beloved by all who knew that within his rugged exterior lay a heart that laboured for Christ and His kingdom. Rare is the man who meets his father’s murderer. But Nigel Lee was one such man. How he met his father’s murderer and led him to Christ is told here; and other experiences which colour the life of this man of God. With testimony from those who knew him and worked with him over the years, the author presents an unauthorised record of his subject’s life and ministry. About the Author Dallas Clarnette is a minister (retired) of the Presbyterian Church of Australia. With his wife, Beverley, he lives in Rosebud, Victoria and regularly travels to preach throughout Victoria and beyond, sometimes accepting short-term ministry in vacant parishes. In 1967 he published Fifty Years on Fire for God, a biography of Walter Betts, who influenced Melbourne’s evangelical life in the 1930s; and in 2009 The Blessedness of Death, Anticipated in the Lives of Eminent Christians. He has degrees from Asbury Theological Seminary, Kentucky and Luther Rice Seminary, Florida. His association with Nigel Lee dates from 1992.

Far from being morbid, this is an inspiring record of the last words of select Christians from the 1700s down to the present. We hear how they yearned to be with Christ even as their strength ebbed away. This is a challenging read! It urges those advanced in years to look forward to their own death. It urges the young who think they'll never die, to prepare for it as the saints have for generations. It will speak to the careless as it shows clearly that Christians know how to die.

A little book full of hints to help home sellers save money and stress when they are selling their homes and especially when they are dealing with real estate agents. How many people deliberately open their wallet or purse, take out a hundred dollar note and throw it in a rubbish bin? No one. But yet, when it comes time to sell their homes, thousands of people throw away thousands of dollars. Sure, they do it without realising what they are doing; but the result is the same they lose a lot of money. That's because they've got no experience at selling their homes. Some people only sell a home once or twice in their lives. This little book can save you a lot of money when you're selling what is probably your biggest financial asset, your family home. It can also save you a bit of stress. And, if you handle it wisely, it might also make the selling process a bit of fun. I sure hope so.

How to Avoid Them, How to Save Your Money, and Live Happily Ever After . . . This book shows how real estate consumers lose millions of dollars every year due to several simple but very costly mistakes. It shows how sensible people, who carefully watch every dollar, throw thousands of dollars away when they buy or sell a home. These mistakes happen because most people have no experience with real estate. Some people only buy or sell a home once or twice in a lifetime. They do not have the knowledge to avoid the financial loss and emotional stress that comes with buying or selling a family home.

Everyone wants to be successful. But what is success? Is it having a lot of money? Is it having a happy family? In this book, Neil Jenman sets out to define the meaning of success and what it takes to achieve success. He argues that most people are a lot closer to achieving success than they realise. He acknowledges that success involves financial security but he argues, strongly, that money should not be their main measure of success. He says, ‘There are plenty of losers on the Rich Lists’. To achieve true success people need to display true character. In this book, Neil sets out the characteristics that he feels are essential to leading a truly successful life. This is a book that can be of enormous help to anyone who is seeking to achieve a more successful, rewarding and happy life.

Dog Ear Cafe is a true‐life adventure story about how one Aboriginal community beat the odds and defeated petrol sniffing. It tells of the Mt Theo Petrol Sniffing Program: a story of culture clash, of two lines of fire that meet in the desert night, of partnerships that cross Australia's racial divide. Woven throughout are humour, taboos, bush mechanics, hope and tragedy. In a colloquial and narrative manner, this book invites the reader to a deeper analysis of the assumptions behind white and black economics, indigenous alcoholism, welfare dependency and the failure of well intended policy and programs. Hidden in the subtext is a mud map for reproducing successful partnerships with indigenous Australians.

''We've driven around Australia, how about we drive around the world?' And with this one fanciful remark, the seeds were sown for what would become a worldwide adventure for one Melbourne family. Fuelled by itchy feet and a profound desire to expand their family's horizons, after five years of meticulous planning and seemingly endless vaccinations, Danny and Sandra packed their two kids, Maddy and Raffy, into their 4WD and headed off on their 'Big Trip'. Over the next 360 days and more than 36,000kms, this ordinary family undertook a truly extraordinary expedition, circumnavigating the globe and taking in experiences, both profound and everyday, which would prove to be life-changing. Based on the blog that the family kept while on the road, Drive Around the World is a touching, at times hilarious and genuinely unique account of their journey. Filled with tales of the unexpected, close calls and boundless adventure, it's a book that the whole family can enjoy and be inspired by.

Set in wintry Tasmania in the early 1990s, with flashbacks to post‐war Hobart and Europe during World War II, this story deals with dark secrets, crime and Nazi plots, interwoven with familiar domestic tensions of family life and marriage. Tully creates a fictional world strongly embedded in authentic details of real locations and well‐conceived characters. The earthy, passionate main protagonist, Jack Martin, is richly drawn: 'A typical copper - detective anyway - stressed out most of the time, running on adrenaline, nicotine and coffee. Booze too, but not as much as some of his mates. Running to flab from a diet of meat pipes and sauce, chips and the deep-fried dog's turds they called chicken rolls, gobbled down on the run between cases, ingesting cumulatively lethal doses of salt, sugar and saturated fats.'In this elaborate web of intrigue the ground shifts, the past intrudes and time and place are vividly realised.

Biography: general Hybrid Publishers

Manfred Jurgensen was born between Denmark and Germany in the coastal border town of Flensburg in 1940, a 'midnight child'. He has always been sensitive to boundaries and what's beyond the borders, emotionally and physically. He has chosen to reveal his life history ‐ to a very large extent dominated by World War II and its aftermath ‐ in a highly original and unusual form. The protagonist and his lifetime experiences are wrapped within a semi-fictional presentation that he suggests might be called 'autofiction', or perhaps a 'bionovel'. Throughout the narrative he philosophises about the nature of 'coincidence' as a life-force.

This stirring and beautiful picture book relates the moving and inspiring story of a gifted young girl's passion for the piano in a time of historic turmoil. During China's Cultural Revolution (1966 1976), a young girl is taken from her family and sent to a faroff labour camp. Forbidden to play the piano, she nevertheless finds a way of smuggling hand-written music into the camp and sneaking away at night to practice a piano in a secret location. Then, one night, she is caught... Inspired by the amazing true story of the international concert pianist Zhu Xiao-Mei, Andre Leblanc and Barroux's acclaimed picture book from France poetically relates an extraordinary story of perseverance set against a cataclysmic period of history which is, to this day, still shrouded in mystery.
