Words from the Wise

June 2017 Amazon and Collaboration. I am going to write to both our local and Federal Members of Parliament and ask them to be clear to their constituents and small business in Australia about funding the entry of foreign business from taxpayers contributions - in this case Amazon. Governments will do anything to get voter approval; whether they are incumbents or in opposition - building employment is always high on their agenda. However building employment seems not about net jobs growth, just new jobs. I read in the Melbourne Age of March 25th the headline “Amazon sparks industrial assets demand ”. The article in part says “large warehouse and logistic properties to store the goods bought online in readiness for distribution.” and “It is expected these will be in regional and outer metropolitan areas, initially in NSW and Victoria, before spreading Nationwide”. Amazon will happen in Australia as it has happened in North America and other countries – I just want to be sure we are going to have a level playing field where Governments do not fall over each other in the rush to fund by grants etc., this entry into Australia. If I judge Government based on how our local state Government part funded the Avalon Distribution Centre where Cotton On (and others) are to be based all I can think of is net job deficit as so many apparel companies import from cheap labour sources. I also have trouble in understanding the state Government acquiescing to the plea from UWAP to provide free entry to the State Premiers Book Awards. In the UWAP case our local Government funds the shortfall in funding from another level of Government.

This week the collaboration location was the Caravanserai on the Gold Coast called the Leading Edge book conference and trade show. As a book distributor (the only one exhibiting) it is always enjoyable promoting our key lead titles for the year with hand selling. Thank you to the bookseller staff who patronised our booth (we were between A&U & PRH). It was good to get some strong positives for The Prince and Assassin (Melbourne Books), Fabulous Phil (Brolga Publishing) Heartwood (Melbourne Books).

Please write to your local and federal MP’s and ask the question “are you going to help fund Amazon’s arrival in Australia by any grants, taxation benefits or in any other way”.

Lastly we have softly launched a new business to do with foreign content. www.dennisjonesinternational.com.au This is a collaboration gathered between us and aided by Gardners UK and it is intended that we will offer via sales force some nice lists that are not distributed in Australia. No stock on hand. Most of these publishers will have their stock sitting with Gardners and the twice a week air freight and kind trading terms suits many Australian booksellers. Legend Press is an example. For further information or suggestions please contact dennis@dennisjones.com.au

http://www.premier.vic.gov.au/investors-cotton-on-toavalons-true-potential/ “In a major win for local jobs, the Andrews Labor Government has helped secure a $40 million investment from Avalon Airport and its first major tenant, the Cotton On Group, at the airport’s proposed new industrial precinct’’. https://www.booksandpublishing.com.au/ articles/2017/02/01/83477/victorian-premiers-literaryawards-to-waive-entry-fees-for-spn-members/ The Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards, administered by the Wheeler Centre, will waive entry fees for up to three titles from Small Press Network (SPN) members from 2018.

I was on bookshop visits for the final afternoon and missed the Titlepage discussion – as I wrote last month this for us is still a highly expensive option with no guaranteed revenue from the outlay to provide a net revenue. What I am aware of is that booksellers decide what they stock, what they special order this is not simply by the provision of another database. Anyone who would like our daily onix in stocks please contact jenny@dennisjones.com.au I want to say thank you to the brigade of people who support our business endeavours which enable me to do what I do on a week by week, month by month basis. As happens in organisations you do have change and people coming and going. Today I would like to thank Joy Childs for her service with us for the last couple of years; she has been our person of first contact to many booksellers, publishers and our own people. Joy - Good luck with the new career and thank you.

Keep on recommending DJ

Four and a half months after her boyfriend became a paraplegic in a motorbike accident, he and Emma travelled to Australia, Emma's home country, and embarked upon a 15,000 kilometre backpacking trip. This story takes the reader on a whirlwind trip around Australia. A young woman struggling to accept her boyfriend's paralysis, and a paraplegic man backpacking during a time many spinal injured patients remain in hospital. Written with honesty, insight and dark humour, Emma examines the dynamics of the relationship, impact of the injury, difficulties faced learning to live in a wheelchair in a challenging country, and encountering perceptions of the disabled. Ultimately, this is a compelling love story. I believe not only people experiencing spinal injuries, their family and friends would be interested in my book, but also people interested in travel and memoir. Kev and I were a typical young couple working ski seasons, and my book shows that life can change quickly and dramatically. ‐ Emma White

Author Information Emma White grew up in country Victoria and after completing a B.A in Classics at Melbourne Uni travelled to Canada where she spent several years teaching snowboarding and working in ski fields in North America and New Zealand. After Kev’s accident and their trip to Australia, she returned to university in Calgary and completed a B.Sc in Environmental Geology. She worked as a hydrogeologist for a few years at an engineering consulting company where she got to drive ice roads and drill wells and stuff in between writing hydraulic assessments. She is currently completing a PhD in water resource engineering at Melbourne Uni which she commenced after moving back to Australia with Kev. They now live in Melbourne with twin daughters.

Every generation has a player who leaves opponents, teammates, coaches and fans slack‐jawed and breathless. Phil Carman was the player of his generation, capable of turning a game in five minutes with inspirational marks and goals. Carman was the first full‐time professional footballer, the fittest player of his era. He played with such ease and grace that success seemed inevitable. But Carmen's temperament was affected by the greatest interstate war the game has ever seen. His individual streak meant the success he craved eluded him. Carmen missed grand finals due to suspension. He clashed with teammates, coaches, fans and infamously head‐butted Graham Carbery, a boundary umpire. More than thirty years since Carmen played football, he is still remembered as one of the most controversial, single‐minded and brilliant footballers in History. In Fabulous Phil, Carman tells his side of the story, and the men he played with and against tell their side of the story, of what Carman was capable of... AUTHOR INFORMATION Matt Watson fell in love with North Melbourne in 1977 when he first pulled on a football jumper at the Oak Park Football Club in Victoria. He’s been fascinated about football and its history ever since. In 1978, Matt was one of hundreds of kids who lined the boundary before the VFL grand final, letting helium balloons fly shortly before the bounce. Matt is a long-term North Melbourne member and an AFL member. He’s been to 14 grand finals and turned his love of sport into a passion. He’s been writing about AFL football, cricket and boxing for decades. A former ABC journalist, he’s covered sport for ABC Online, the Footy Almanac and other publications. Matt lives in Brisbane. His two sons are also members of North Melbourne and the AFL. Matt spends a lot of time thinking about North Melbourne’s next premiership. Occasionally he thinks about less important things. The story of Central Station Records and its crucial role in the development of the electronic dance music scene in Australia and New Zealand from the 1970s to today. Founded in the 1970s, Central Station Records grew from a tiny Melbourne store into an iconic dance music brand, with physical stores in major cities, plus busy mail‐order and export operations, and successful recording labels and streetwear lines. The focus was electronic dance music ‐ from disco and house to hip hop and hardcore ‐ and the whole lifestyle surrounding it. Meanwhile, sideline business Metal for Melbourne catered for another emerging and neglected market ‐ heavy metal fans. In many ways, original owners Giuseppe (Jo) Palumbo and Morgan Williams were unlikely entrepreneurs. Both from the wrong side of the tracks in their respective birthplaces (Italy and New Zealand), they were motivated more by the prospect of achievement, freedom and fun than by any hunger for money and status. Unfortunately for them, freedom and fun were hard to come by for many years, as they contended with legal threats, supply embargoes and intimidation tactics. Fortunately, though, dance music took off in a big way. Generations of DJs, clubbers, ravers and radio listeners supported their stores and tunes. Based on interviews with fifty‐plus leading DJs, producers and entrepreneurial creatives, Music Wars is the story of how a new music form emerged from the underground and grew to become a major force in the mainstream. This is the unlikely, but true story of a man who had none of the qualities considered necessary for an entrepreneur ‐no eccentric IT genius ‐ nor money‐market marvel ‐ nor the innovator/creator of a new market. Instead, Alan was a hard‐ working obsessive compulsive armed only with a ninth‐grade education and some rat cunning whose parents' dream was for him to work as a postman. In this funny, unforgettable and compelling account, he tells the tale of his most unlikely journey ‐ made every mistake ‐ fell into every trap ‐ bought every scam ‐ distracted by the usual suspects: squabbles over money, relationships in ruins, and pursued to the point of financial calamity and personal insanity by a vexatious litigant for ten years. It was only when Alan started ignoring conventional wisdom, and breaking all the rules of business, that everything turned around for him. This is a hands‐on white‐knuckle ride into that rarest of destinations ‐ the unvarnished truth. If you ever dreamed of creating a business empire from scratch, or wanted to learn something about the world of business, then you must read this extraordinary story. This is business as it should be taught ‐ in the raw. For those who want to act, not talk. Littered with gold nuggets. ROSS CAMERON, HOST SKYNEWS "OUTSIDERS"

The discovery of a stolen red monoplane on the dry, flat bottom of Emu Lake meant many things for different folks. For Elizabeth Nettlefold, the chance to nurse its strangely ill meant renewed purpose in life. For Dr Knowles, brilliant physician and town drunk, it meant the revival of a romantic dream. For some it meant a murder plan gone awry, and for Bonaparte, it meant one of the toughest cases of his career. 'Bony ‐ a unique figure among top‐flight detectives.' ‐ BBC

In 1944 the Australian literary world was rocked by a hoax which was to become a worldwide scandal. Ern Malley, deceased motor mechanic and poet, was the invention of two Sydney poets, James McAuley and Harold Stewart, who were intent on proving that modern poetry was a sham. The work of Malley comprised lines and words selected randomly, everywhere from Shakespeare to an American report on the drainage of the breeding grounds of mosquitoes. Max Harris published the poetry in the literary magazine Angry Penguins but when the deception was revealed he was mercilessly lampooned, tried and convicted of publishing 'indecent advertisements'. This definitive edition contains all of the poems, a new introduction by artist Albert Tucker, and historical background by Max Harris, John Reed and Colin Wilson; augmented by the unique contribution of drawings and etchings by Garry Shead.

The Quest for Cooley is the story of the 40‐year search for the identity of the real life figure that DH Lawrence portrayed as the Australian political leader Benjamin Cooley in his 1923 Australian novel, Kangaroo. Through his intensive research in Australia and overseas, Robert Darroch, a former investigative journalist on The Bulletin, discovered that Lawrence ran across an actual secret army in Sydney in 1922, and unmasked it in his novel of Australia. This is a story that many people and interests have tried to prevent coming out. It exposes the fascist underbelly ‐ what Lawrence called "the horrible paws" ‐ of post‐WW1 Australian society and politics. This is the first volume of the author's Lawrence's 99 Days in Australia which tells the story of how the 20th‐century's most controversial author came to write his most surprising work of "fiction". ROBERT DARROCH, the President of the DH Lawrence Society of Australia, is a journalist, writer and Internet practitioner. His first book about Lawrence, DH Lawrence in Australia (Macmillan Australia), was published in 1981. He and his wife Sandra now run The Svengali Press, a digital publishing company.

The Silvery Freedom... and the Horrible Paws is the story of how DH Lawrence's 8th major novel, Kangaroo, was composed and written. The title refers to Lawrence's realisation ‐ half‐way through writing the book ‐ that he had stumbled on a secret para‐military organisation in Australia in 1922. "It was as if," he wrote in Kangaroo, "the silvery freedom suddenly turned, and showed the scaly back of a reptile, and the horrible paws." This is a story that many people and interests tried to prevent coming out. It reveals the fascist underbelly of post‐ WW1 Australian society and politics. It is the second volume of the author's Lawrence's 99 Days in Australia, which together tell the story of how the 20th‐ century's most controversial author came to write his most surprising work of "fiction". ROBERT DARROCH, the President of the DH Lawrence Society of Australia, is an historian, investigative journalist, writer, and Internet practitioner. A powerful story of Australia's great sheep farms. Gripped By Drought is a powerful story of a man's battle not only with the elements of nature which threatened the ruin of his huge Australian sheep‐farm, but also with a loveless and unhappy marriage. For Frank Mayne, master of well‐nigh a million‐acre sheep station, life assumed its most dreary aspect. No rain for his farm, a wife who involved him in an orgy of spending and entertainment, and with disaster just round the corner, there seemed little prospect of happiness. Yet in the darkest hour of all, after the many unexpected and sometimes thrilling situations, the darkest hour of the drought gave way to rain and Mayne's tribulations became of the past.

This biography of Frank Cobbold opens when Frank goes to sea on a Clipper aged 14. It follows him through inexperience as a Fijian trader who escaped the cannibals' cook pot and survived one of the worst hurricanes in living memory. In Australia he learned the skills of a surveyor and quickly became a sought‐after and trusted station manager. Despite problems that would have defeated a less resolute man he took droughts, cheats and unyielding land tenure regulations in his stride to become one of Australia's great pioneering pastoralists. Admired by fellow bushmen, trusted by his partners and wooed by bankers, his gritty determination earned him a small fortune which he gave away. It's a remarkable story.

Since the suicide of Maris, his beloved wife of forty‐two years, Noel Braun struggled to find himself. All his life assumptions were overturned and he lost his sense of identity. Endeavouring to find some anchorage, he embarked on a spiritual quest of self‐discovery. He decided to walk the most popular routes of the Camino; the ancient pilgrimage route that lead across France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela in the north‐west of Spain. This journey is described in his earlier book The Day was Made for Walking. The journey was far from over. Noel felt compelled to resume his quest. At the age of eighty, he returned to France to pursue a less popular Camino route that took him across France and into Spain. Two years later, the urgent need to continue has him walking through Portugal into Spain. Despite his ageing body and his many doubts, he has a confidence and faith in himself to face the arduous physical demands and reach Santiago de Compostela. Woven into his spiritual and emotional journey are fascinating stories of the people he meets. I Guess I'll Just Keep on Walking is a sequel. The physical and the spiritual merge with the ancient and modern. It delves into history and, at the same time, is a memoir and travel guide.

Author Information Noel Braun commenced his working career as a country school teacher, then moved into a corporate career, which took him from Melbourne to Perth and Sydney. He has had a lifelong passion for writing and wrote the first words of his novels nearly forty years ago. After a busy career and raising a family of four, he has found the time in retirement to fulfil his long-held ambition and see his work in print. Noel has published two novels: Friend and Philosopher and Whistler Street. He has also published a memoir, No Way to Behave at a Funeral, which describes his journey following the death by suicide of his wife Maris, and The Day Was Made for Walking, his first exploration of Le Chemin de SaintJacques-de-Compostelle and El Camino de Santiago de Compostela. He is working on other manuscripts and on developing a new career in writing. Noel lives in the Snowy Mountains. He is a keen walker and enjoys getting out in the national parks surrounding his home.

Noel Braun yearns to walk the Camino, the ancient pilgrimage route that leads across France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela. Since the suicide of Maris, his beloved wife of forty‐two years, he has struggled to find himself. But is it pure madness? He's an old bloke. At seventy‐seven‐years, he should be sensible, act his age and relax in a rocking chair. Can his body and spirit withstand the demands? Can he leave family and friends behind? Noel believes this is a journey he MUST undertake. It's a compulsion, a spiritual quest of self‐discovery, an urgent need to commune with the world around and beyond him. When Noel begins his journey, he discovers it's not just the rigorous demands of the physical world he must answer. The territory of the heart and soul has its own challenges, which have him searching for spiritual and emotional insights. His travels are interwoven with accounts of the many engaging characters he meets. In time he realises he himself is one of the Camino's characters. The Day Was Made for Walking merges the spiritual with the physical, the ancient with the contemporary. It is a memoir, but also a glimpse into history and a travel guide.

Paradoxes sometimes appear more real than what we may tell ourselves to be true. Simply because we are unable to scientifically validate what we cannot measure, does not give reason to deny the existence of possibilities beyond our cognitive threshold. To lift the taboo on magic that makes our reality nonsensical, Dr. Ram makes no attempt to satisfy the intellect. In fact, many have been damaged by the toxicity of information and do not know what to believe in anymore. For this reason, Dr. Ram has written this book for the subconscious, for us to embody this intelligence ‐ viscerally. Besides, our hearts speak of that which the mind may refuse to understand.

Laughing at Cancer is a unique book. Most books about cancer are Q&A's, outline the latest scientific research advances, are from a "what to expect" orientation, or in some instances are from a comedic perspective on someone's personal experience. This book, whilst infused with humour, hope and inspiration also includes some scientific evidence, making the content factually rigorous. Laughing at Cancer aims to empower readers and provide strategies to enhance resilience ‐ a factor often diminished by ill health.

Earth shattering. Life changing. World altering. Such profound phrases, but they all seem monumentally inadequate when attempting to articulate the impact that Andrew’s illness has had. Not only on us as individuals and life partners, but on our two gorgeous and innocent children, our extended families, friends, colleagues, acquaintances, communities of origin and people we have never even met. Motor Neurone Disease — M.N.D. Three little words… three little words that altered the course of our lives forever. From the very beginning, Andrew’s illness blanketed our lives in its entirety. Gone were our blue clear skies and warm sunshine and in its place, endless dark, pitted with angry and rumbling clouds in varying shades of grey. It was all consuming, with no escape or reprieve. It was suffocating. Despite this, Andrew was resolute and his courage and determination were unparalleled. He fought with everything that he had and his unwillingness to readily accept the fate depicted by M.N.D. found him pushing the boundaries and taking risks. We were told to ‘go home and make the most of things’, but Andrew would have none of it. We had hope. Andrew would say, “Where there is life, there is hope”. We sought unconventional embryonic stem‐cell treatment, which necessitated Andrew travel overseas to India on two occasions, under less than favourable

Author Information Linda Curtis lived the dream until widowed in 2008 as a result of Motor Neurone Disease. Having re‐evaluated life, perspectives and formulated new future plans, she now lives in Rockhampton with her two teenage children, toy poodles and cat and works in the education sector.

Part 1 : The European years (1932‐1949) 'Sabotage!! Sabotage!! You will be shot,' yelled the duty guard officer while at the same time contorting his face, making him look like a monster I had seen in a horror movie, and also rapidly moving the stiffened palm of his hand across his throat in a cutting action that gave a meaning of certainty to his words. The guards and the uniformed office staff present nodded their heads indicating their full agreement with the officer's decision. Nick Standish spent the closing days of World War II as a child soldier pressed unwillingly into the service of the Luftwaffe. Survival and return to his father and brother were his only priorities, a task made seemingly impossible when he was accused of sabotage and threatened with death. His thrilling memoirs cover a childhood spent in pre‐war Yugoslavia, growing up as the clouds of war gathered over Europe. Then the Germans invade, and everything changes. The family moves gypsy‐like from one town to another ending in Bela Crkva on the Rumanian border in 1942. There he enters a Russian Cadet School. His father enlists in a White Russian Army. His mother dies and he is left to face the unknown. After many harrowing episodes and near‐ death experiences, he survives the war. Then four years of being moved from one displaced persons camp in Austria to another, until migrating to Australia as an assisted migrant in 1949 and having his first square meal in 10 years!

Author Information Nicholas Standish, of Russian descent, was born in Yugoslavia. In 1944, at the age of twelve, he was drafted into the German air force as a Luftwaffenhelfer starting in Eger, Sudetenland (now Cheb, the Czech Republic). After many harrowing near death incidents, including being shot for sabotage, WW2 ended for him in Salzburg, Austria. There he was moved many times from one DP (Displaced Persons) camp to another, starting in Saalfelden and ending in Asten near Linz. From there he migrated to Australia in 1949 as an assisted migrant. After working the compulsory two years for the Australian government in the NSW Railways and then the Electricity Commission, he entered academia. He became a Professor of the University of Wollongong. Later he became a Resident Professor in Cilegon, Indonesia. He finished his 25 years of Indonesian time in January 2017. In 1961, the temperature hit ninety degrees Fahrenheit before lunchtime. It was going to be a scorcher as surfers and campers flocked to Narrabeen, one of Sydney's northern beaches. Late afternoon a typical southerly buster whipped up a sandstorm. Amid the mayhem Peter Wishart, barely three at the time, vanished. The story explores every mother's worst nightmare ‐ the disappearance of a child. As the Wishart family struggle to overcome their grief and loss, nearly two decades later new evidence starts to emerge. A plot centered on overcoming grief quickly turns to one of revenge.

Author Information Liz Newton was born in Australia, has three adult children and currently lives in Sydney with her husband and dog. Extensive travelling including road trips across continents, sailing adventures and family holidays, has provided inspiration for creative writing and photography. Liz has worked in health services and, in particular, mental health including drug and alcohol, in a variety of roles, as well as teaching and tutoring at universities and involvement in health research and ethics. Her academic background is in Anthropology and Comparative Sociology. Research has included exploring issues of indigenous suicide, vocational training opportunities for people with mental health issues, and a PhD doctoral thesis on the ethnography of deinstitutionalisation for people with mental illness, all of which have resulted peer reviewed publications. More recently Liz has enjoyed the freedom and creativity of fiction writing, and has published a fiction novel, Faraway on an Island, as well as Meandering; a selection of short stories.

An Eye for an Eye deals with many aspects of human behaviour, explored through a doctor Andrew Wright, who when subjected to major stress develops an obsessive thirst for revenge. His drive for revenge is due cause at the pressure put upon him at the hands of a supposedly corrupt police officer, Brett, who is also involved yet indifferent in the suspicious death of a disadvantaged Vietnamese refugee named Hahn. This creates a destructive force damaging the doctor's moral values, his marriage and his ability to function as a husband, father and doctor. An Eye for an Eye examines the repercussion of revenge and the way it affects everyone, both passive and active participants.

Author Information Arthur’s parents were born in Poland and came as refugee migrants to Australia where Arthur would attend Melbourne Boy’s High School and develop a lifelong love of literature and was encouraged to pursue writing as a career. He would instead go on to study medicine, specializing in psychiatry. Seeking Social Good is a wide‐ranging autobiography of the career, life and times of Australia's first professor of social work, and pioneer social policy scholar. It is well‐organised, carefully referenced, and enlivened by the author's photographs. The work is organised into 6 volumes ‐ Getting Educae, A Career Under Way, Working in Australia, Living and Working Overseas, Working with International Organisations, and Disengaging from Work and Later Life. Each is substantial and is worth reading in its own right, as well as being integral to the whole story. Later Life in the final volume is told largely through the author's photos. The opening volume of the autobiography of the career, life and times of Australia's first professor of social work, and pioneer social policy scholar. The foundation of the author's learning and social and cultural awareness came during his early years - from his birth in a country town in South Australia in 1931 at the height of the depression, to 1956 a decade after the end of the Second World War. Originally from Victoria, his parents settled in Adelaide in 1935 where their three children were educated at a state primary school and private secondary schools, and the University of Adelaide. At university he combined an honours degree in history and political science with a professional diploma in social work, a rare choice at the time for a male straight from school. As 1953 South Australian Rhodes Scholar, he read PPE (philosophy, politics and economics) at Magdalen College in Oxford. His fiancee Patricia Berry accompanied him overseas, sharing Rhodes House activities and holiday touring experiences in Europe, England and Scotland, while living in Oxford.

Each is substantial and is worth reading in its own right, as well as being integral to the whole story. Later Life in the final volume is told largely through the author's photos. The second volume of an autobiography of Australia's first professor of social work and pioneer social policy scholar. After education in Adelaide, then Oxford described in Volume 1, this covers the early years of his career, before appointment to the social work chair in 1968. Returned from Oxford to Adelaide in 1956, the author and Patricia Berry married. Their three children were born in 1958, 1960 and 1961. John worked in the social work field, briefly in a family welfare agency and then in the social work section of the Commonwealth Department of Social Services. Rapid national experience came as organising secretary of a conference of the Australian Association of Social Workers. A PhD scholarship at the embryonic Australian National University in 1958 enabled him to research the history of professional social work in Australia. In 1961, he was appointed to Australia's first academic appointment in social policy at the University of Sydney. A sabbatical year in 1967 at the University of Michigan in the USA, was memorable for all of the family. It was the time of the race riots, the Vietnam War, the 'war on poverty', and student protests. A summer tour included Expo '67 in Montreal. After 12 professionally productive years, living in Adelaide, Canberra, and Sydney, the University of New South Wales appointed him in 1968 to the first chair of social work in the country.

The work is organised into 6 volumes - Getting Educated, A Career Under Way, Working in Australia, Living and Working Overseas, Working with International Organisations, and Disengaging from Work and Later Life. Each is substantial and is worth reading in its own right, as well as being integral to the whole story. Later Life in the final volume is told largely through the author's photos. This autobiographical volume covers John Lawrence's main professional activities within Australia after taking up Australia's first chair of social work at the University of New South Wales in late 1968. In the initial period to the mid-1970s, social institutions were being challenged to justify their existence. It was a turbulent time - especially for those heading university schools and professional bodies avowing social concerns. Cutbacks, pessimism and disillusion followed the frenetic Whitlam years. In addition to developing a social work school in this environment, the author was engaged professionally in a variety of community activities, such as the Australian Council of Social Service, the Benevolent Society of New South Wales (whose name he unsuccessfully tried to change), the Aboriginal Legal Service, the Australian Council of Rehabilitation of Disabled, the International Year of the Child, and Australia's first child abuse inquiry in 1982. Key papers reflect the author's thinking and work on professions, on social work and social welfare generally and in particular fields.

Each is substantial and is worth reading in its own right, as well as being integral to the whole story. Later Life in the final volume is told largely through the author's photos. Australia's first professor of social work and pioneer social policy scholar gives an account of what is entailed in periodically living and working overseas - an important part of an academic's professional and family life. The special significance of the sabbatical year at the University of Michigan in 1967 has already been described in the Career Under Way volume (Vol 2). In mid-1974, a family camping trip in Europe preceded living on York University campus for six months. Both in 1983 and again in 1987/88, a year was spent in the USA by the author and his wife adding to their Michigan year. 1983 was divided between Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. A prestigious appointment 1987/88 at Hunter College in New York proved richly rewarding professionally and personally. In the first half of 1990, the author helped to develop a social work doctoral program at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada and then taught a professional ethics course on a teaching exchange at the University of Stockholm. The author's careful records have provided insight into periodically living in other social, cultural and academic environments.

In pursuit of social good, Australia's first social work professor and pioneer social policy scholar, worked with international social welfare and social work bodies ‐ additional to periods of living and working overseas covered in the previous volume. Chairing the Pre‐Conference Working Party in Manila in 1970 for the international social welfare body proved a catalyst for his international work. The present volume provides an account of his subsequent work with the International Council on Social Welfare and the International Association of Schools of Social Work, the global social welfare and social welfare education bodies, and with more specialised bodies like Rehabilitation International, ECAFE/UNICEF, the Social Welfare Development Centre for Asia and the Pacific, and the International Federation on the Ageing. A career highlight was the first Eileen Young husband Memorial Lecture in 1984, arguing for an urgent need for a reflective universal morality.

The final volume of the autobiography of Australia's first professor of social work and pioneer social policy scholar. Australian retirement occasions, and inclusion as 1 of 15 in Faithful Angels: Portraits of International Social Work Notables (NASW Press) provide overviews and appreciations of his wide-ranging career in pursuit of social good. The extensive, diverse content of the autobiography is easily accessed by an index in each volume and a cumulative index in this final volume. Appointed an emeritus professor on his retirement from UNSW in 1991, the author's professional work commitments extended into the 1990s - particularly chairing the Management Board of the national Social Policy Research Centre, and completing his general book on ethics and professional conduct. Life was enriched by a growing, geographically dispersed family, and the development of Patricia Lawrence's career as a sculptor. Six overseas trips, to the USA and Europe, kept alive their international friendships and interests. These trips are told through photos.

The First World War was an unprecedented conflict that reshaped the global political landscape and modern attitudes to warfare, valour and patriotism. And for the fledgling nations of Australia and New Zealand it was yet more: the cauldron in which their identities were forged, the international stage on which they first performed and drew praise, the foundation of many of their institutions and traditions. This handsomely produced volume recounts the traumatic years of 1914 to 1918 through the 'voices' of those involved ‐ the diaries and letters of officers, soldiers and nurses; the pronouncements of politicians and strategists; the songs sung on marches and in concert halls; the poems and memoirs that questioned the war, celebrated its victories and lamented its calamitous losses. Richly illustrated, it is a fascinating history, a beautiful commemorative keepsake, and a moving tribute to those who fought to defend their way of life.

Author Information Tracy Madden is an interior decorator and author living in Brisbane. Her two passions are her family and food and she feels the two are intrinsically linked. It brings her enormous pleasure to spend great chunks of her day shopping, preparing and feeding her family and creating the love. The very mention of the word Paris brings a smile to her face as for most of her life she has endured a love affair with the city of light. This is her first novel.

Peach Avenel is a broken woman. She thought she had a loving marriage. She thought she would be starting a family. She thought she had a successful career...Peach was wrong. She has a life that no longer fits, filled with broken dreams. When a tumbled down house with a neglected garden comes into her life by serendipitous circumstances, Peach feels something stir within her and although she prefers Jimmy Choo shoes to gum boots, she is drawn to the house and the garden. What unfolds is a story of humour and love. Of cupcakes and cactus. And of a young woman learning about herself and finding out sometimes you need to break open to find who you really are.

Author Information From the bestselling author of The Essential Ingredient: Love here is another ‘Madden Masterpiece’. Tracy Madden is a storyteller who creates characters who are destined to become your best friends.

In poetic language, this book tells a story about understanding and tolerance. Mr Pang lives on the east side of the river and Mr Shou lives on the west. They argue over trivial things and forbid their children to play with each other, and in turn, even the children stop their dogs playing with each other. They are always fighting over something until one morning, when the two families are cooking breakfast. The family on the east side of the river is using wet firewood, giving off black smoke, while the family on the east side is using dried firewood, giving off white smoke. The black smoke and white smoke float gently up into the air towards each other...and things start to change... Cao Wen Xuan is the Winner of Hans Christian Andersen Award.

Author Information Cao Wenxuan won the Hans Christian Andersen Award ‐ often referred to as 'the Nobel Prize of children's literature' ‐ in 2016. The International Board on Books for Young People’s jury noted Cao writes beautifully about the complex lives of children facing great challenges. He is a deeply committed writer, whose own difficult childhood has been deeply influential on his writing, in which there are no easy answers. A professor at Peking University and a member of the Chinese Writers Association’s national committee, Cao has penned over fifty titles and is one of China’s most important and original children’s authors. His stories have been translated into many languages. Cao Wenxuan’s numerous accolades include the Chinese Government Award for Publishing (2013), and two Outstanding Book Awards from China’s General Administration of Press and Publication.

In the hot summer sun a group of animals are eagerly looking for a shady place to rest. The animals quarrel for a spot under a tree, until finally, the elephant wins. But when they look again, the tree is dying and has only a few leaves left. Just then, they see a father and son crossing the wasteland. The father's shadow is like a canopy over the little boy...and the animals are intrigued... Cao Wenxuan is the Winner of Hans Christian Andersen Award 2016.

June 2017 A New Series of Books on Individual and Team Sports for Young Players in Grades 5-8. Each book contains a brief history of the specific sport and its development, highlights, and star players. Both text and images work together to engage the interest of young readers and provide them with some fun and interesting facts about their chosen sport. Readers will also learn through clear descriptions and images about the:Equipment required to play, Rules of the game, Positions on the field, How to execute basic skills, How to refine their skills, How to warm up for the game, Where to find additional information about the sport. The Learn to Play... sports books are ideal for reluctant readers who enjoy sports because they will engage their interest and provide enjoyable reading practice. They are also ideal for the non-athletic student who wants to understand the rules and skills involved in a new sport before getting out on the field or court. An hour or so with one of these books will provide your child with the basic information required to get out there and play a new sport with confidence and there is ample information to satisfy the sports enthusiast. As a teacher, I have often found that the reluctant beginner, who feels a degree of comfort often uncovers an unsuspected skill and interest in a sport, leading to a new and exciting hobby, and another way of staying fit and having fun.
