June 2013 New Title Releases Sexual abuse within the Catholic Church has been nothing short of an epidemic of catastrophic proportions. The devastation of victims, the ruination of priests and religious, the damage of a major world religion and its faithful are horrendous and incalculable. In the current social environment —that includes the Royal Commission into Institutionalised Sexual Abuse of Children—this is the book that had to happen. This is the book, written by an ‘insider’, designed to move the Church back into the hands of the millions of shocked and bewildered Catholics throughout the world who are saying: enough is enough. Bishop Geoffrey Robinson states that there are three major tasks to be performed in eradicating sexual abuse from the Church: identifying and removing all offenders; reaching out to, and assisting, all victims/survivors; and identifying and overcoming the causes of both abuse and the poor response of the Church’s hierarchy. Bishop Robinson has been involved in the first two of these three fields for eighteen years, and he firmly believes there is a crying need to address the third element—preventing abuse from happening in the first place-and in so doing, ending systemic sexual abuse in the Catholic Church …for good! This ‘pull no punches’ book sets out a clear action plan for the Catholic Church to adopt if it is sincere in wanting to eradicate sexual abuse. It is a call to a new Pope to seize the opportunity of his appointment to not only sweep the Church clean of abuse, but to put His house in order for all time. Bishop Robinson calls for nothing less than a Council of the whole Church, inclusive of the laity, to confront the issues raised in the book.

June 2013 New Title Releases “The homosexual is essential to the sexual revolution; there can be no revolution, no liberation, without us.” Australia’s Gay Liberation movement arose at a time in world history when revolution was in the air and gays wanted to be part of it. It was the Left which championed revolution, which had a theory and practice of revolution – Marxism. But when it comes to Gay Liberation it is often asserted that the Left was backward and even hostile, that Marxism had no tradition of dealing with sexual oppression. This book challenges those claims and shows that the Left – and the working class – was involved from the beginning in the earliest gay rights movements and was integral to the new Gay Liberation Movement. It also refutes the claim that the Left has no intellectual tools to explain the oppression of women and gays. Looking specifically at the Left and Gay Liberation in Australia, it uncovers a rich history – and an inspiration for the activists of today.

June 2013 New Title Releases Sin City, 1970s. Crooked cops take the cream off the top of crime profits. Judges frequent illegal gambling dens. The winners of races are known before the horses have run. Heroin floods the streets, and the fight for the control of the trade sees men being gunned down left and right. This is the world of George Freeman. Often portrayed as a charming celebrity gangster, he was in fact a calculated criminal motivated by greed and a lust for power and influence. One of Sydney's most notorious and unforgiving hard men, Freeman preferred others to do his dirty work. He dominated that city's underworld alongside Lennie McPherson, controlling a vast illegal gambling empire while keeping top cops, judges and politicians in his pocket. Here, at last, we hear the truth about Freeman's links to the Mafia and drug trafficking, his secret addiction and the accusations of murder. In this compelling and unsettling account, award-winning writer Tony Reeves reveals George Freeman without the gloss. About the author Tony Reeves is an investigative reporter of many years standing and winner of the Ned Kelly Award for True Crime. Tony has worked as a journalist with the ABC, Nation Review, the Sunday Telegraph and the Sunday Australian, investigating Australia’s underworld. His reporting helped bring about the Moffitt Royal Commission into organised crime. He now lives in Brisbane..

June 2013 New Title Releases The Encyclopedia of AFL Coaches is the natural follow‐up to the enormously popular The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers. This new addition to the history of football’s personnel details the careers of the men who have been senior club coaches over more than a century of VFL/AFL competition. This encyclopedia not only has statistical information on the games won, lost and drawn by individual coaches, but goes into detail about fascinating coaching careers, from Collingwood legend Jock McHale to the virtual unknowns who coached for just one or two games. For example, St Kilda’s Bill ‘Banjo’ Paterson coached the Saints for just one game in 1938 when regular coach Ansell Clarke was unavailable. Paterson was handed the job just before the start of play and his normal role with the Saints? He was head trainer! This book details the appointments, the sackings, the unusual, the bizarre. As with The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers, no true football fan can afford to be without this book. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Main

Not the first to delve into this complex life, Jim Griffin's biography is unique for exposing the Archbishop's human flaws, previously avoided or brushed over by other biographers. Giving Mannix credit for his many achievements, Griffin analyses controversies such as conscription in the Great War, State Aid for Catholic schools and his association with entrepreneur John Wren. The book also examines Mannix's fateful connection with B.A.Santamaria, who formed an undercover organisation, The Movement, to fight communism in the unions. This produced damaging splits in the Church, the Labor Party and even families. It contributed to 17 years of government by the Liberal and Country Parties until the resurgence of Labor under Gough Whitlam in 1972. Beautifully written from an acerbic distance, this biography should appeal to those interested in how this nation was shaped, how its values and institutions were influenced by the life of this extraordinary man whose legacy is described in Paul Ormonde's concluding chapter.

This is a collection of poetry written over a period of forty years. Selected from twelve separate collections as well as more recent poems, they offer an insight into the development of a poet whose voice is strikingly different from that of most other Australian writers. Its central preoccupation is a search for identity and the quest for redemption. Despite their intensely subjective, almost confessional style, the poems embrace a remarkably far‐ ranging scale of human experience and emotion, characterised by extensive witticisms, puns and wordplay, perceptive insights and a passionate intelligence. About the author: Manfred Jurgensen is a bilingual poet and novelist of Danish‐German background who has travelled extensively, but spent most of his adult life in Australia. His literary publications in English comprise six acclaimed novels, the most recent The Last Australia Day, and thirteen collections of poetry, including a fifteen‐ canto history of Australia, Shadows of Utopia. What the critics said: “A most subtle and perceptive of poets.” Judith Wright “The volume as a whole could be described as an inherent search for identity in the verbal and formal construction of the quest itself.” Editor’s Note “… the quest is concerned as much with an enduring faith in the possibility of resolving, or at least harmoniously mediating, the tensions between an idealised life and the rigours of everyday reality, as with the need to come to terms with the fragmented, insistent self and its own troubled past, those ‘memories / bleeding in the sheets’ (51).” Alex Skovron, Foreword “Manfred Jurgensen is something of a phenomenon in contemporary Australian poetry.” Vincent Buckley

June 2013 New Title Releases According to John Potter there are 10 lessons to learn to be a successful negotiator: Timing is everything You make your money when you buy Don’t necessarily take the first offer It’s always good to have another buyer You never go broke making a profit Develop rapport Never give up on a possible sale Make concessions count Never lose your cool Helping your opponent come to grips with the deal – aim to leave everyone smiling. In The Property Investor’s Guide to Negotiating, John illustrates these lessons through real life examples and entertaining stories from his career in property development. The expectation in property investment is that you will do well out of the deal, but this is not often matched by the reality because people aren’t educated enough about negotiation. “I have learnt many lessons along the way – some were harder to learn than others!” says John. He shares these lessons in this book to educate readers to become better negotiators, and therefore better investors.

About the Author John Potter’s stellar career in real estate and property development spans decades. A highlight was his tenure as CEO of Villa World, when the company had a high volume of unsold homes due to the introduction of GST in 2000 and a net profit after tax of approximately $5 m. Under his leadership, company profits soared to $12 m, $18 m and then $24 m, until his resignation in September 2003. His secret was his ability to do very good deals. He successfully negotiated 50 large property acquisitions during that time and was considered to be the most effective negotiator on Villa World’s board of directors, according to Villa World’s co‐founder, Tony Bawden. This is John’s first book.

June 2013 New Title Releases Finding and keeping good people is the key to business success, but it is also one of the biggest challenges. The different generations in the workplace create further challenges for managers as a one‐size‐fits‐all approach doesn’t work. Employees’ expectations on their return on investment – which is to work in your business – is now higher than ever. It’s often a case of whether you (the employer) meet the expectations of prospective employees, rather than the other way round. So you need to engage with your people as soon as possible – ideally, at the very first “hello”. Sadhana Smiles has had a stellar career in real estate and admits: “The real estate industry has never been great at training people how to recruit, run successful businesses, engage teams and become great leaders. The majority of our business‐owners were successful sales agents who transitioned to becoming directors and learnt some of these skills along the way.” So she decided to write the book to help people in all industries get recruitment right and learn how to manage, engage and coach employees for maximum performance. Sadhana Smiles is Chief Executive Officer of Harcourts Victoria, the state division of one of Australia’s leading and well respected real estate brands. Sadhana is also a popular speaker and presenter and contributor to a number of national real estate journals and publications.
People Power
“ … a great book and well overdue. People are the lifeblood of any industry and so a focus on attracting and retaining the very best talent is vital for any leader. [Sadhana’s] insights and experience provide a clear framework and foundation. Thank you!” Mike Green, MD, Harcourts International Ltd

AVAILABLE NOW Set in the post 9/11 world, Australia is still a country of relative innocence with our terror threat at medium to low. All that is about to change. With the Bali bombings, boats on the horizon, and the threat of global terrorism on the increase, the Prime Minister instructs our overseas intelligence agency ASIS (Australian Secret intelligence Service) to activate an independent covert team, designated Section Zulu, to move around our closest Asian neighbours and alert Canberra to any terrorist plans, never realising the enemy could already be inside the fence. When that overseas team Section Zulu, uncovers intelligence of threats to Australia the Prime Minister decides the last line of defence will be a small locally‐based covert team that will secretly terminate that threat. Headed by ex‐SASR officer Tony McAvin, and together with electronic surveillance experts, the crack team track down homegrown terrorists. But can the team overcome living and working in a shadowy world of death and deception and still become the force the country so desperately needs.

When Toby Morrison was sixteen he was a superbly fit young man playing three games of high‐level basketball every week. Then something happened that brought his world crashing down - Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This is the story of his bewilderment at suddenly having no energy, the search for a diagnosis and his eventual triumph over an insidious illness that threatened to define the rest of his life. Toby’s story is not just an inspiration, it is a ‘how to’ guide for overcoming CFS. Together with founding the CFS Health Centre, he hopes this book will spread the word of what he learnt during his battle and what steps fellow sufferers can take to get their lives back. “In the space of six months Toby helped take me from hardly able to get out of bed, to be fit enough for the Stawell Gift … if it were not for his help I’d probably still be in bed! What a bloke!.” ASH HUMPHREY

Incredible as it may seem, names and events in this book are factual - which makes it at once an important documentary and excellent entertainment. The almostlegendary Coober Pedy opal fields attract and create characters. Situated in the arid peneplain of Stuart Ranges, people there live underground to escape flies, dust and extreme temperatures. They may live but inches away from the opal they so desperately seek and for which they endure considerable hardships. Water is rationed, food expensive, violence and robberies are almost a way of life, since Coober Pedy is a well-known haunt for criminals and tribal outcasts. Gambling and prostitution thrive. Men disappear mysteriously. Tribal killings baffle the authorities. Frank and hard hitting, Rena Briand has made no attempt to cover up her obsevations. Though this book has an expert condensation covering opal and its mining, it differs vastly from other works on the subject. Containing glimpses of station life, dingo hunting, prospecting in the wilderness and race meetings in the desert, it is a firstclass portrait of Australian outback. The characteristics which set Coober Pedy apart will not last much longer, as the outside world is slowly overtaking it; but with keen perception the author has caught those under the spell of opal fever today, and hilarious anecdotes contribute to make this an extrememly readable and colourful book.

Di, an historian, and Bill Perkins, a geologist, are possibly on their “last trip” overseas and are determined to make it a memorable experience. This collection of “missives and reflections”, sent to family and friends back in Australia, becomes a compelling account of the well‐planned 69‐day trip across Europe upon which they embarked in March 2012. As you travel with them into all of these European countries steeped in history, you will not only be informed but entertained by their perceptive observations, and their open‐mindedness about all they see and learn. This is an enlightening and captivating read. The travellers meet up with contacts in various parts of Europe whose own stories are also of interest. The Perkins’ approach to travel is one of excitement and exuberance. Di Perkins writes with passion, always aware of the subtleties of the history and geography of each destination. The book is illustrated with Bill’s evocative photographs. About the Authors Dr. Bill Perkins is a geologist who worked for Mount Isa Mines Ltd for twenty‐eight years. During his employment in Mt Isa, he took out the ground for the lucrative gold mine, Tick Hill. Gaining his Masters and then his contentious doctorate, Bill has retained his love of geology and likes nothing more than getting out amongst the spinifex, looking at rocks with his geological friends. Di Perkins is an historian who has published several research books relating to north‐west Queensland. A retired teacher of Mathematics and Spiritual Development, Di planned this holiday based on research work from Lonely Planet, suggestions from friends and information on the internet.

In the spring of 2008, an Australian woman arrives in Paris to fulfil a dream of discovery and to immerse herself in French history and culture. Hoping to capture memorable photographic images, the writer experiences much more as she records her impressions of a society confronting significant challenges. It is the fortieth anniversary of May 1968, the revolutionary upheaval of students and workers, and France is coming to terms with its past as it defines its future direction. For Moira McCarthy, this is a rare opportunity to nurture her creativity amidst a Paris which never ceases to provoke or inspire. After seven unforgettable weeks, her return includes an idyllic trip into the Cotswold’s and time to explore her family’s past in Ireland and Wales. Her successful photography ultimately lures her to New York in October, surrounded by the drama of the Global Financial Crisis and the hopes engendered by the forthcoming presidential election. Written with warmth and intimacy, this is a perspective on Paris beyond the awesome grandeur of its architecture by a writer who is “able to find the beauty in almost anything.” About the Author Moira McCarthy is an Australian teacher and photographer who regularly visits Paris to maintain her passion for French language and culture. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Melbourne, she later gained a Bachelor of Educational Studies from Monash University. Since 1981, Moira has taught History and English in Catholic secondary colleges. In 2005, she achieved the highest level of the Diplôme D’Etudes En Langue Française from the French Ministry of Education. In 2007, Moira participated in her first International Exposition organised by the Bibliothèque de Géographie at the University of Paris and later that year participated in the Venice International Photo Contest. Since 2007, Moira has received thirty Honourable Mentions from the International Photography Awards and the Prix de Paris, predominantly for her photographs of French and Venetian architecture. More recently in 2012, she has been awarded for her photographs of the bayside, social and sporting landscape of her hometown of Melbourne.

Martin Luther King once observed that ‘a riot’ is, at bottom, the language of the unheard. Change does not come from above. The history of social justice and change has been written by social movements. However, first, we must all acknowledge these problems as our problems and not someone else’s. An enriching, provocative book challenging us all to ‘hear’ the individual voices of those relegated to the edges of society. Falzon uses potent poetry as well as prose to bring the marginalized to life. A must read for everyone, particularly those with a genuine interest in social justice for all. New passions are coming to the surface in societies around the globe. Popular uprisings and social critiques are emerging in response to disempowerment, exclusion and the dismantling of public services and disinvestment in public goods. Martin Luther King once observed that: "a riot is, at bottom, the language of the unheard"; a cold shoulder comes at a price... This book explores some of the stories that lie at the heart of the current upheavals, from the perspective of a country that is still yet to resolve its fundamental contradiction of invasion and colonisation, opting instead for a paternalistic and punitive programme of control over its First Peoples. Dr John Falzon is an advocate for a more equitable society. He trained in sociology and poetics. Falzon has worked in academia, research and advocacy in civil society organisations and community development. He has been the Chief Executive of the St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia since 2006. He has been a poet since 1973. www.dennisjones.com.au Find us on Facebook Dennis Jones & Associates

A lucid, honest and deeply searching account of the author’s struggle to come to terms with anxiety and depression. Jenny Stewart shows how, over many years, with considerable help from others, she was able gradually to take control of her depression, not by focusing on its causes, but by understanding how best to fight it. It covers practical advice as well as personal revelations. About the author Jenny Stewart is a Canberra‐based university professor and writer. She gained her PhD in political science at the Australian National University, and later joined the staff of the University of Canberra. In 2009, she was appointed Professor of Public Policy at the University of New South Wales in the Australian Defence Force Academy. Outside academia, Jenny is well known for her critical articles on policy issues which have appeared in the Canberra Times, Australian Quarterly and Quadrant. A collection of Jenny’s essays on management (called The Decline of the Tea Lady: Management for dissidents) was published in 2004. There are many books about depression – what makes this one different? This is not just a self‐help book, it is a self‐seeing book. It has been written specifically with women in mind. Inner Weather shows that it is possible to make something positive out of the depressive experience, provided that we have the courage to learn from it. It fills a gap between the many excellent books of professional advice and personal memoirs that relate the depressive experience.

Have you ever thought about how a coincidence can change the life of a family? Or perhaps why an accidental insult leaves you feeling perplexed and bewildered rather than mortified? Dimity, the matriarch of her large family, can answer both these questions. The discovery of her husband’s infidelity finds her roaming around England searching for some answer to her woes. Strangely, she meets Malcolm in Rye, whom she offends, but a series of coincidences result in two chance meetings later which not only form a friendship but changes her family life forever. Meantime, back in Sydney, her assertive daughter Bianca is accidentally pregnant with child number five. Bianca’s indolent husband, Louis, is very wealthy and has a cocaine habit. Their marriage is tumultuous to say the least. Melanie is daughter number two. She is a lawyer beset with bouts of depression and endures heartache and tragedy. Dimity supports both daughters in whatever capacity she can. Indeed there is a heady mix of characters as well as an unexpected twist. Pink Floyd’s Dark side of the Moon pre-empts an eerie aura at the outset; however, at the end, Dark side of the Moon displays how sweet life really can be.

Letters from the Front is an authentic account of World War One through the eyes of an ordinary soldier, the story of one man. It seeks to add to our national consciousness of the immeasurable value and sacrifice of all those who have served our country, and our damaged heroes who survived, without in any way glorifying war. Jim McConnell takes us with him to Gallipoli, Villers‐Bretonneux and the Somme Canal to gain another glimpse of the events that symbolise courage, comradeship and sacrifice, and that cost Australia a generation. As a first‐person narrative, it strives to preserve the authenticity of the time and place in which these events occurred; to simply tell the story without twenty‐first century judgements, embellishments or condemnations. Much of the story comes directly from this important primary source of actual diary notes. This is a valuable contribution to our World War One literature because so little was passed on in the generations that followed. It also teaches us how to live well in an imperfect world. Jim McConnell saw people as people, and treated them accordingly, willing to fight and quick to forgive. He then made the most of the life he was left with in post‐war Australia.

In an industry that’s full of enthusiastic, driven and determined journalists, she’s been offered the chance of a lifetime to work at Gates Publishing, one of the world’s largest publishing firms. They stink of money and power and when they let their money do the talking, they become untouchable in every way. From all the hundreds of applicants who applied, they wanted Amy. It must have been her deep love and long standing commitment for the English language that they sensed because she shined brighter than the rest. There’s more to Amy than her love of writing. She dreams a lot and her dreams are not always nice. Sometimes, her dreams come true, for better and for worse. Her nightmares especially, are vivid, disturbing and a tease of what is to come. She’s always been in denial about her dreams, but she will soon find out that denial will take her nowhere and that it can even be dangerous to her and to those she loves.

This book is sure to become one of the most influential of modern times. Its primary hypothesis is that, like the apes from which we evolved, homo sapiens sapiens or modern man lived from the outset in tribes, each with its own language, culture and religion passed on by tribal elders to succeeding generations. As with chimpanzees, however, tribes tended to be dominated by alpha males and periodically engage in wars with neighbouring tribes. From the outset, therefore, men developed the art of persuading others to believe their often ridiculous religious notions or to fight misguided wars. The Agricultural Revolution led to larger societies in which people had many different roles, paving the way for the today’s industrialized consumer society in which we have been reduced to consumer zombies easily persuaded to overindulge in often unnecessary, if not harmful, products.

An extraordinary, vivid, haunting and stunning novel magnificently crafted taking you into a time of tragic history that moulded a nation out of exploration and discovery, wanton carnage, savagery, courage and bloodshed. An overwhelming gripping action packed story of a young man's grind to manhood through despair, shame, torture, survival and retribution. His early years infused with hate, of a mystic meeting with a spirit from another time and place, of the tragic wasted years fighting hell and horror of the blood lust of the American Civil War. This is an epic story of the hunter who became the hunted, as the predator giving no mercy, as the prey fighting for his life, of the rise and fall of a savagely persecuted nation of proud people caught in a turmoil by an encroaching world, of a love spurned and re‐ignited in hot raw passion amid the death‐ defying challenge of leading the oppressed to freedom from a ruthless tyrant and the surprise, thrilling climax of revenge and a hate suppressed.

Blaine’s story is more than just one of survival. It is a journey of transformation as he desperately tries to get away from the mistakes of his past. The price he is forced to pay for the freedom to be reborn is often terrifying as he considers the options for his fate – be ripped apart by wolves, slowly drown or shoot himself. But, he is determined not to give up despite the shadow of death often lingering on him. When Blaine understands that the past need not be a permanent chain tying us down and preventing us from reaching our full potential, he is encouraged to continue until he finds his silver fall. Hunter’s Moon is a message of hope and inspiration.

Utter, utter madness is at the root of this very exciting and totally out of the ordinary tale of a British aristocrat, super hero and gentleman called, Erskine Quint, Esquire or Sir (not yet). Erskine manoeuvres between time‐zones leaving you guessing and imagining from what era and which historical period he actually exists in, to no avail. You will be left in a timeless zone, bouncing backwards and forwards between historical events in a “Pythonist bubble” and automatically joins in the fun of “going with the flow”! The main character, Erskine Quint, was born with blood running through his veins that gives him extra‐dimensional strength, intelligence, guile and the most powerful will to defeat all obstacles in his way whilst solving and discovering the final frontier that has driven the human race over millions of years; “ The Holy Grail of Mankind”. Nothing will stop him reaching this goal although evil is constantly attempting to thwart him all the way through the novel.

It takes a brave soul to travel where no‐one has ever gone before ... into the 4th dimension. To the surprise of his fellow scientists and friends, a scientist creates a machine capable of travelling ... through time. Unfortunately for the Time Traveller (as he is now known), he travels into the far future, some 800,000 years. What he discovers of the future of humans is beyond belief. A divided primitive world of two groups: the first is small, docile, and weak, and the other, the Morlocks, is a more active, but brutal, subterranean race. In escaping the Morlocks, he mistakenly travels even further into the future, where he discovers the odds of evolution, and then, the end of the world.

Zach Brinkley is a prickly, fiercely independent boy with a chip on his shoulder. When this story opens he’s in hospital, having been hit by a truck on a pedestrian crossing near his home. His heart has stopped and he’s clinically dead. Doctors resuscitate Zach but he winds up in a coma, unable to communicate with anyone except some rather bizarre, otherworldly visitors. He meets Astra, for example, a yellowish “winged thing” who irritates him in the extreme. He also meets a set of scary twins who reveal to him that his being hit by the truck was no accident! Someone is trying to kill him? Who could want him dead? And why? This story follows Zach’s determination to stay alive with the help of Astra, the twins and his only worldly contact, the insufferable, know-it-all Sophie Ferguson. Will he emerge from his coma in time to thwart his would-be killer?

Dozens of elves, hundreds of goblins, legions of demons ‐ all converging on the colourless world ruled by the goblin king.
