June 2015 New Title Releases We had the good news during the week that Lisa Messenger had decided to attend a Conference in New York City at month end; our best thoughts for her at this event. It also gives me the chance to thank some book shops who have topped the list of our best selling shops with her title. The store with the highest selling booksellers across Australia of Daring & Disruptive are (in order of sales) "The Best Little Bookshop in Town" from Cronulla in Sydney; then "Oscar & Friends Booksellers" from Double Bay in Sydney, "Dymocks Melbourne" ,"Kinokuniya" and "Q.B.D. Robina" on the Gold Coast. Thank you to all the shops who have supported this book. Best sellers are available from good booksellers who have a go. We eagerly await Lisa Messenger’s Play Book and then in this list we have the exciting looking “Collective 2016” Diary (due October). Speaking of 2016 Diaries we have the in store date for the 2016 Jukurrpas third week of August. As soon as we get the ISBNs and images we will do an e-blast and list in the next available new title list. From front of house to the back of house. PIRs. If you are living in Australia you would have seen the frenzy over free market driven book supply. Judging by comments from both sides of the house the tepid PIR rules we currently have will be further disengaged. I am not really opposed to this as it has a cringe of inevitability about it and the consumers have already voted – not that the consumers really understand the implications to the businesses. The turbulent times we are entering have so many clashes of big business limiting callage on bookshops, the continued drag on the dollar affecting book prices, the ongoing growth of reflowable content being device driven, the growth of one tap buying, and so on. And the rise of consumers actually trampling back into the bookshops who can afford to have a differentiated offering to the DDS’s. I wonder if James Patterson will be encouraged to stay on for the ABA conference to give us a pep talk.

If there was a time we needed a platform for content (like Titlepage) now is the time. Why abandon supply of locally published books to local bookstores because the publishers are not on that platform? As an example we are probably carrying books from 1000 publishers, and I think this industry is about to feel the onset of self publishing in a way we have not known before. So the opportunity to garner truly local content (as opposed to rebadged foreign content) has never been better. As I am writing this my next call will be to the Officeworks at Fyshwick in Canberra to print from the USB the new titles for June and July that we know about as at last Friday. Then those South Coast NSW shops and the ACT booksellers. Upcoming is the visit of my colleague Ian Roberts from Gardners as we do a quick trip from Brisbane to Perth with an intersection at the ABA/LEB trade show on the Sunday. If the following words make it to the order form it means that our supply of Hinkler Books to the shops and online stores is recommencing. As Stephen Ungar put it I have had some sort of association with 3 generations of Ungars and the best is yet to come. As a small group of workers we are working on many book objectives from print to digital and the scanning of some great out of print works as well. The likes of C J Dennis's Sentimental bloke, Mudrooroo's Wild Cat Falling and Robyn Davidson’s classic Travelling Light. Will take a bit longer. To those booksellers having work place anniversaries this year I wanted to wish Ted & Moira from Dymocks Nowra good selling for their upcoming 25 years in bookselling! Read plenty, sell more DJ

Simon and Catherine Marshall travel to Edinburgh, determined to see the safe return of The Lady of Scotland, but they inadvertently uncover a royal deception. Floundering under the pressure of court life, Catherine is offered the guidance of Lady Agnes Dunbar, but what secret is the old lady hiding and why has she taken such an avid interest in the daily life of Lord and Lady Wexford? Trapped within the walls of Edinburgh Castle, Simon must choose where his loyalties lie, the consequence of which will decide the safety of his growing family. In France, Gillet de Bellegarde is instructed by the Duc de Berri to ingratiate the new English court in Bordeaux - his mission to seduce the Albrets back to the French throne, but when information comes to hand of a secret delivery to Prince Edward's castle, Cécile is sent as an agent for the Vicomtesse de Gisors, to deliver a vital message to her husband. Her journey takes a turn for the worst when another deadly enemy raises its head - La Peste, otherwise known as the Black Plague. Catherine Pembroke and Cécile d'Armagnac solved the mystery that separated them in childhood (The Lily and the Lion) only to be forced apart as they each faced challenges that would decide their future happiness (The Order of the Lily). The Gilded Crown draws you back into the 14th century lives of Gillet and Cécile, Catherine and Simon as, between them all, they strive to right an injustice and uncover a document that could end the reign of one king and send another to war. About the Authors: Catherine A Wilson Catherine was born in London, England, but immigrated to Australia in 1972 to reside in and around the leafy suburbs of Eastwood, Epping and Dundas. Without a particular path in mind she simply took the first job she was offered, which happened to be the position of Layout Artist for a well-known map publisher, but changed course and selected a career in nursing. She later enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force, before resigning to a quiet life at home. She lives in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, with her husband and two beautiful children, several Jack Russells, a large flock of flighty chickens, goldfish and budgies. When not writing (which is not often) she likes to garden, read books, shop, read books, drink copious cups of strong coffee with friends and read plenty of books. Catherine T. Wilson Catherine was born in Burnley, England, but moved to Australia when she was eleven months old. She grew up in Elizabeth, South Australia, relocating to Queensland when she was fourteen. She worked in communications, before finally deciding to fulfil her dream as a writer. The raw draft of her first novel, a Viking romance, won an encouragement award of $1,000 from six hundred entries, in a popular women's magazine competition. A member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, she visited Europe in 2006 to witness the annual re-enactment of ʻThe Battle of Agincourt', and then travelled extensively throughout Britain and France, researching material for Lions and Lilies. She lives on a small bushland property, on a mountain range west of Brisbane, with her husband and two beautiful children, three dogs, a small herd of cattle, a flock of cockatoos, and one horse. And yes, you only have to walk into her house to see her first love. Pictures of maidens on horseback grace the walls, and every corner and mantel is filled with knights and battle axes, the bookshelves overflowing with tales of chivalry. When valour and duty stand above a heart's desire... Separated as infants and rediscovered by chance, sisters, Catherine Pembroke and Cecile d'Armagnac solve the mystery which forced them apart (The Lily and the Lion) only to find their reunion all too brief when the Prince of Wales seeks to reclaim his mistress. With an unbreakable bond forged between the girls, Catherine chooses a perilous path to shield her sister. But has the faith in her protector, Simon Marshall, been misplaced? Who is the mysterious Lady of Scotland and why is Simon so determined to locate her? Caught in a web of conspiracy, Catherine must unravel the secret Simon has worked so hard to conceal. Exiled to Kent, Gillet de Bellegarde takes up residence at his family's home, offering Cecile d'Armagnac the respite she desperately needs. But rest does not come easy in England and honour and trust becomes a double‐edged sword. Cecile and Gillet's relationship is severely tested by a Welsh vixen, Cecile's burgeoning pregnancy and both families' determination to separate the lovers. Knowing his last hope lies in the restoration of his name, Gillet resumes his quest to be granted an audience with the French King but in his absence, Cecile is uprooted from her safe haven and confronted with a devastating choice.

Separated in infancy, rediscovered by chance, can they unravel a mystery and find a way to reunite? Wistful and passionate, the wayward Cecile d'Armagnac has enjoyed the indulgent childhood of a French noble, but life for the young woman is about to change when she learns of her sister. Catherine Pembroke, a naive novice, has endured a lonely existence behind convent walls, but when Cecile's letter is intercepted by the malicious Earl of Salisbury, the shy nun is thrust into a dangerous and foreign world. Placed into the custody of a cynical knight, Simon Marshall, Catherine struggles to unravel a past that threatens her future as William of Salisbury begins his own hunt ‐ after the girls ‐ hoping to use them as pawns in his desperate quest for power. Trapped by one of England's most powerful lords, Cecile yields to him to save her sister. She flees with the aid of the King's courier, Gillet de Bellegarde, but will her journey see her lose all she holds dear, or just her heart? In an age when women have no control over their lives, Cecile and Catherine find themselves immersed into political turbulence, intrigue, danger and romance. Their hopes of meeting are thwarted by the powerful men around them ‐ even as they provide both distraction and passion, for none appear to be who they claim. The Lily and the Lion will catapult you into a world when knighthood was revered and love was to be cherished. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

Perhaps the only thing that can impact and shape a woman's life with the same power as her mother's love and guidance is her mother's death. In Without My Mum, Leigh Van Der Horst shares her own honest, heartfelt story of losing her beloved mother to cancer in 2008. She invites us on a journey that is at times heartbreaking and others heartwarming, yet is ultimately comforting and inspiring. With genuine warmth and candor, Leigh tells of her transformative passage through devastating grief to rediscover and redefine her own identity. Without My Mum reveals the sisterhood amongst motherless mothers. Featuring stories from mothers around the world, Without My Mum offers resounding reassurance that no motherless mother is ever alone. Leigh Van Der Horst further reaches out to her motherless 'sisters' supported by contributions of motherly wisdom from a collection of encouraging mothers world wide together with a host of inspiring popular personalities such as Jools Oliver, Lisa Wilkinson, Megan Gale, Amanda de Cadenet and Natalie Bassingthwaighte. The motherless mother's heart needs to know that she can and will move through grief to reclaim a fulfilling, grateful and loving life. Without My Mum addresses this need by providing a definitive source of emotional and practical resources specifically for women dealing with the loss of their mum. A wonderful book that captured my heart in the first few paragraphs. 'Without My Mum' is a moving account of a beautiful, close relationship between a mother and her treasured daughter as they are forced to say goodbye. Leigh's candid, humorous and heartfelt narrative, together with a collection of stories and wisdom from others who have walked a similar path, are authentic, uniting and ultimately inspiring. It's a laugh-out-loud, sob-a-littleuncontrollably kind of book that will resonate with any parent or carer. I adored it! - Jools Oliver

In Our Primate Family Lou Grossfeldt writes about her love of and work with primates. I have known and admired Lou since 2008 when I first visited the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia where she has worked as a primate keeper for much of her life. When I visit Australia I always look forward to spending time with Lou and the other keepers at the zoo hearing the latest stories about the chimpanzee family. Indeed, during her more than twenty years experience with monkeys and apes (and other animals, too) Lou has so many stories to share, stories that will fascinate and often enlighten those who read this book. It is my hope that many people will read and enjoy these stories. And that this will encourage them to join the growing band of those of us who care and help us to make a positive difference for primates, and all living things. - Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE Founder, the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace Lou Grossfeldt has always wanted to work with animals. Today she is one of Australia's leading experts on primate husbandry and care. Lou has spent more than two decades working to help save our primate family from extinction, and today she supervises the African primate division at Taronga Zoo which includes managing some of mankind's closest relatives, the Chimpanzees and Gorillas. In this book Our Primate Family, Lou shares her remarkable stories with awardwinning writer David Blissett. You'll travel from the stunning rainforests of Borneo and Vietnam, to the vanishing wilderness of Madagascar and Uganda, then to one of the world's most iconic zoos. You'll read about the refugees of the forest and meet some notable members of the family: mighty Kibabu, lover of lettuce and waterfowl; Sonny, Sydney's own snow monkey; Willow, shy, beautiful, and with a fire-fighting fixation; and Lubutu, the wisest, most judicious of them all. Lou offers insight into the plight facing primates in the wild. They are a group of animals more like us than any other. They are beautiful, enigmatic, often misunderstood. They are our biological family, and many of them are in trouble. Lou shares some practical advice each of us can follow to help make a tangible difference to the survival of these amazing animals.

Religion: beliefs

Publisher

Garratt Publishing

Biblical stories are metaphorical. They may have been accepted as factual hundreds of years ago, but today they cannot be taken literally. Some students in religious schools even recoil from the "fairy tales" of religion, believing them to be mockeries of their intelligence. David Tacey argues that biblical language should not be read as history, and it was never intended as literal description. At best it is metaphorical, but he does not deny these stories have spiritual meaning. Religion as Metaphor argues that despite what tradition tells us, if we "believe" religious language, we miss religion's spiritual meaning. Tacey argues that religious language was not designed to be historical reporting, but rather to resonate in the soul and direct us toward transcendent realities. Its impact was intended to be closer to poetry than theology. The book uses specific examples to make its case: Jesus, the Virgin Birth, the Kingdom of God, the Apocalypse, Satan, and the Resurrection. Tacey shows that, with the aid of contemporary thought and depth psychology, we can re-read religious stories as metaphors of the spirit and the interior life. Moving beyond literal thinking will save religion from itself.

Saltwater People of the Broken Bays explores the incredible history and natural beauty of the coastline between North Head and Barrenjoey. These golden beaches found along this coastline were the birthplace of Australian beach culture. Manly Beach and neighbouring Freshwater are the home to where beach bathing, surf life saving and board‐riding all began in this country. What is not so well known is the strong link to the ocean of the Aboriginal clans who enjoyed a highly sustainable lifestyle along this coastline for 20,000 years before the arrival of the Europeans. The book reveals the spirit of the northern beaches through the lens of history, and explores our relationship with that energized zone where the ocean meets the shore. Cyclops Press also hopes that Saltwater People of the Broken Bays will raise awareness about the need to preserve threatened Eora rock art, and champions the construction of a permanent site on the northern beaches acknowledging the first people.

Saltwater People of the Fatal Shore was awarded the 2013 Biennial Frank Broeze Maritime History Book Prize sponsored jointly by the Australian Association for Maritime History (AAMH) and the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM). Saltwater People of the Fatal Shore ‐ Sydney's Southern Beaches is a detailed history of that beautiful stretch of Sydney's coastline between South Head and Royal National Park. This coastline features world renown beaches such as Bondi, Maroubra and Cronulla, as well as places of great historical interest. Botany Bay was where James Cook first made landfall on the east coast of Australia and made claim to the continent. It was also were the First Fleet arrived with its human cargo. Before these events it was home to the Aboriginal people of the Eora, Dharug and Dharawal nations for tens of thousands of years. The focus of Saltwater People of the Fatal Shore is on the shoreline... that high energy intersection between sea and land where waves, whipped‐up by wind and storms, sometimes thousands of kilometres out to sea, announce their arrival in a final dramatic explosion... or caress it with a gentle cascade. This constant, hypnotic dance with the shore can be calming, and it can be confronting. When the swell appears excitement grows and the coastline becomes energized. The surfzone both attracts and influences us... and in turn our presence affects this playground on the edge of the vast Pacific. Vic Meyer, man of iron; iron by trade and iron by temperament, was the owner, builder and skipper of Solo. She arrived on the Sydney ocean yacht racing scene in 1955 like a runaway train, winning every major ocean race in Australia. Not only first yacht across the line but also on handicap, testimony to both the skills of Alan Payne her designer and her hard driving skipper. When Vic tired of racing he took himself cruising and in the twelve years to 1975 he crossed the world’s oceans several times, having all sorts of adventures and grabbing the headlines with his penchant for female crews. You can read the first‐ hand account of these cruises by most of the girls who ‘walked the plank’ to experience life at sea under Vic! The Ship of Steel didn’t stop there but went on and safely bore a bunch of scientists to the Antarctic and back before being put to work to earn her keep taking tourists sailing in the Whitsundays and later in Moreton Bay. Painstakingly researched by Kevin the book is a comprehensive account of the almost 60 year history of Solo including a large range of pictures and factual records. Dick Smith…Australian adventurer bought a copy of my book and replied “What a wonderful book you have written about the story of Vic Meyer and Solo.”

Written over a period of two decades, The Law of Poetry contains poems that pay personal tributes to 'things'broccoli, ducks and concrete-as well as poems that seek to physically enter the realm of abstract concepts -chance, kindness and explanations. Set out in alphabetical order-as if a dictionary of essences-each poem is titled 'The Law of Something', be that 'The Law of Absolutes', 'The Law of the Child, Lost' or 'The Law of Rubber Gloves'. The reader is asked not to judge-as law stereotypically demands-but to engage with this very idiosyncratic world of the individual poet and to be injected, like the shrunken travellers in the 1966 classic, Fantastic Voyage, into the nervous system of another.

Laurie Keim's second volume, Writing on Air, has extraordinary poetic range. It is simultaneously cutting-edge and lyrical, seductive and authentic, personal and cosmic. The poems express a deep affinity with the environment. There are also poems that deal with those unexpressed and unexpected affiliations between people and lovers, while so many are imbued with the magic of epiphany in contemporary urban settings. From Learning to be Lost, a travelogue for the soul, to the haunting dynamics of Vigil, the voice is urgent but at all times assured. This volume could also be read as some type of master-class for critic and poet alike. The technical achievements cover double sonnets, odes and elegies, sestina and palindrome. Yet it is the clarity of vision and vividness of language that remains in the mind after reading.

Frank Cousins is a knockabout bloke; an ex-Queensland cop turned private eye who - it has to be said - is his own worst enemy. Owner and sole employee of the Tasmanian Private Investigation Agency in Hobart, Frank takes on three simple cases and soon finds himself up to his neck in bad guys, bad situations and, as usual, bad behaviour. Money-for-jam, these three cases: find a missing woman, get the dirt on a philandering state politician, and provide personal protection for a wealthy, elderly matriarch - figurehead of Tasmanian environmental group. What could possibly go wrong? Well, as Frank's dear old departed Mum always said: 'nothing in life is what it first appears to be'. About the Author Artist turned crime writer, Barry Weston was born a Capricorn in ‘The Paddo’ Brisbane, Queensland. He now lives with his wife and two chocolate Labradors on a few acres on a small island south of Hobart, Tasmania overlooking the Great Southern Ocean. In previous lives, Barry gained employment (only as means of survival) as: a car-park attendant, advertising salesman, commercial printer, private teacher, railway porter, an ‘outee’ Painter and Docker, roof-painter, sign writer, cleaner, hotel barman and ‘security attendant’ (aka bouncer). Through such employment, he came in contact with a host of 'characters', and thereby gained an insight into and understanding of the ethics of the ‘knock-about’ bloke; and the downside of the wrong/right coin. Barry is a graduate of the University of Tasmania with a Master’s Degree in Visual Arts. His forty-odd-year career within the visual arts consists of thirty-eight solo/group exhibitions, regionally, nationally and internationally. He has taught visual arts at tertiary level at a few Australian universities, and was Artist-in-Residence at a few others. After resigning his position as Head of Department in 1999 and relocating to an island life-style, he left the studio doors ajar but now focuses primarily on writing. Vampires, werewolves, secret societies, classic boy meets girl romances, and some supernatural action sequences are the very foundation of what has come to be known as the Paranormal Romance genre. An Unexpected Bonding makes a conscious effort to try and take the popularised formula and mix it up in an interesting blend of different familiar things. Introduced at the very start of the book are the faerie, which come off in a very similar way to the fantastical creatures of childhood fairy tales. These immortal beings do not live in the physical realm in the same way that other creatures do, but they do like to meddle with its affairs. This layer adds quite a bit to the context of the action and opens the door for new twists to enter into the mix. One such twist is that all of the Vampire characters come straight from the Ancient Egyptian pantheon of famed gods including, but not limited to Ra, Isis, and Osiris. The wolves come from mythological origins as well, and both species are the result of faerie meddling. All these mystical elements set the stage for a far more interesting brand of monster than would normally be associated with this genre and create some welcome intrigue within the story space. Mix this with steamy romance aplenty and it is not for the faint of heart. There is a concerted effort to break from Paranormal Romance genre convention without alienating current fans and An Unexpected Bonding successfully manages to do just that. If you're looking for the next big thing in Paranormal Romance or you feel the genre is a little stale and are waiting for something that will shake it up, then it is highly recommend that you give this one a look.

From Hope to Strategy: The Anatomy of Negotiation, is a book that gives you the latest tools to do the right thing the right way. It will provide you with the communication strategies and negotiation frameworks needed to form new skills, improve processes, be a better leader, and make your relationships and outcomes more predictable. The information in this book is based on extensive research and experienced practitioners, who have participated in and advised on high-stakes negotiations and conflicts that have resulted in practical value-creating outcomes. Psychologist Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) once wrote, "If you only have a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail. Wayne Harrison's book, From Hope to Strategy - The Anatomy of Negotiation, supplies the reader with the additional tools to adequately stock their negotiator's toolbox, preparing them for success in negotiations, no matter what obstacles they may confront in their business or private lives. Mr. Harrison takes the reader through the steps of Preparation, Process, and Practices in negotiation strategies, and clearly makes his points by consistently citing "real-life" examples that further clarify the teaching points presented throughout his book. The relevance of this study to the law enforcement crisis and hostage negotiator cannot be overstated. This book, and the knowledge it puts forth, can truly enhance a negotiator's ability to become more successful, and in my line of work, this means it can save lives. - Michael H.Baker, Senior SWAT Tactical Element Leader and Crisis/Hostage Negotiator with the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles, California USA. About the Author Wayne Harrison is the Founder of Pathfinders Downunder and a highly respected researcher, strategist and thought leader on negotiation and communication. His is regularly called upon by leading organisations to build capability and provide problem solving know-how to manage differences over scarce resources, strategy, culture, organisational change and future risks. Wayne has held senior corporate positions and board directorships. He is an Accredited Mediator, Certified Practicing Marketer, and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Australian Marketing Institute. Jack Tree and Kaavi Noname live on a large island called Aurelia, in the Southern Ocean 'but a bit more northerly'. They meet 11 year Jodie Jones, a survivor of a shipwreck. Jodie has rescued a copper statue of a very young girl with a cart and a goat, which, to her surprise, comes to life. As the child cannot speak, she has no idea who this mysterious toddler is. Jodie decided to call the child Hazel and announces to Jack and Kaavi that Hazel must be a princess because she appears to have the power to control the weather and only princesses can do that! They learn that Tulgon, a sorcerer from the the island of Kraag, stole the child from her mother and they determine to reunite the two. This is the beginning of a series of adventures in which they come across those who help them, like the Weird Frog, and those who make life very dangerous for them. And all the time they are stalked and hindered every step of the way by the treacherous Tulgon...

"Arnold read his beemail, 'No! The bullyfrog is back! He's blaming bees-es for his sneezes, threatening to attack! He plans to bullydoze the bees and drive them far out west; demands we meet him at the hive, if we know what is best.'' Barnabas is back and this time he plans to bullydoze the bees. Having all been bullied before, will Nosh and his friends have the courage to save them... or will the bullyfrog bullydoze them too? About Macadamia House: Macadamia House is a family-owned and run macadamia farm in Bauple, Queensland. As well as other macadamia products, the company also has created a children's book series. This latest instalment aims to counter bullying in children. Springtime on our farm is an explosion of yellow flowers and perfume that attracts millions of bees. These little hard workers come to pollinate the flowers, which starts the growth of the macadamia nuts. There are millions of people in this world who also work hard and want to achieve great things. Sometimes bullies get in the way, preventing them from what they need or love to do. The fourth book in the Nutmobile series explores the many demeanours of the bully, and how, with persistence, courage and self belief, we can all overcome even the meanest. - Yolande Bromet, Macadamia House Santa's Magic Beard

Audrey, Henry, Claire and Pablo are delightful characters in this beautiful board book. Children are encouraged to open flaps to find out what Audrey has stepped on this time!! Throughout the pages there are many objects for children to find, and many words they can learn to say... Around 12 months of age, children tend to use the noise rather than name an animal makes, woof woof for dog, quack, quack for duck etc. Around 18 months of age, children are learning lots of new words, such as car, ball, girl, dog, snail, hat. Around 2 years of age, children start to put words together to make short sentences, e.g. "oh no", "Audrey look", "dog run", "dog ball" etc. By 3, children are putting longer sentences together such as "Audrey is running", "Henry is barking", "Where is Pablo?", "Teddy fall out"etc. Four and 5 year old children will love the rhythm and rhyme of the story. They will understand the moral of the story (to look after your friends), and will love the interaction between Audrey, Pablo and their friends. Parents will love the beautiful photographic images, and will have the opportunity to learn new language development strategies by watching the online videos accompanying each book. A fabulous resource for home, or a beautiful gift.
