Words from the Wise
June 2016 Just finished reading the new Shirley Hardy-Rix and Brian Rix book - The long road to Vladivostok. I have to say I do get quite a thrill when we get new books from people like this. The story goes back a long way (as most of mine do). Anyhow the short story is that we are enabled by this publisher to have global EBook, global POD and offset print for ANZ. What would also be great would be to have an audio partner for books like this. That download market exists; something to work on. On this order form you will see the new title, plus Circle to Circle and Two for the Road which was originally published by Pan Macmillan. The long story is that as a younger person I actually was the sales rep for Shirley's father Frank Hardy's fine work on the history of the communist party in Australia titled But the Dead are Many published originally by The Bodley head in UK. Finally, thank you to Russ Radcliffe and High Horse books for providing another well crafted non fiction title. Booktopia are going to do an IPO - at last. It has been about 5 years since we heard this sort of talk from the book trade and now it is from an online vendor who has literally thrown everything it can into their business. It is not a secret that Booktopia sells a lot of our books and are part of a stable of valued, precious business relations we have. Frankly if it were not for the passion some of these businesses show - and support by taking our files & feeds - our work just would not exist. Readings opening in a shopping mall - at last. Bookshops are back on the front foot and when you look at a curated physical book display it tweaks the plastic from your pocket. I wonder how much these opportunities are fuelled by the upswing in Cookbook demand and then the meritorious level of local books as opposed to say 5 years ago. I don't think I mentioned I swung by the Harry Hartog store in Kotara last month - excellent positioning, right end of the shopping mall and Newcastle is alive. I also visited the Macleans store in Hamilton (a suburb of Newcastle), they were getting heavily involved in the Newcastle Writers Week. Are we fearless? I do read a lot of knocking copy on foreign providers of books as well as our locally published books. Maybe we need to be more aggressive with our local books to create an industry standpoint of local is good - avoid foreign content?
As you read this Lea and I will be somewhere between Alaska and Seattle - going to visit the Amazon bookshop in Seattle as well as "The Elliot Bay Book Company" . Due to our work colleagues we do get annual leave. I am buying advance time on "GoGo" to avail myself of emails at 30,000 feet on my Delta flights. Off to BEA then back a couple of days and on the road trip with Ian Roberts from Gardners including the local ABA and a quick trip to the North island of NZ. Part of the U.S. trip is to more fully think through the rationale of why I am hoping to work past the 50 year mark in the one industry. I need a salary to keep up the mortgage and the travel appetite. So why do "we" do it? In my case I enjoy the "battle"; working against both the odds and the appetite of the industry for "big is better" and small is jeopardy. We work in both challenging and changing times. The challenge is that our elected servants in Canberra continually tick me off so much; how on earth did we end up with such appalling cattle? The Feds are mimicked by the gnat brained state mobs. How do we really take business, or social leadership from them. Luckily we can learn from our writer icons! I had a dream the other night and the subject of my prattling was to be "If Australia was a Hotel, I would check out." I have been asked / prompted to put that one to paper. I look forward to seeing you all over the next few months and my early top for book of the year is the Stan Grant book published by Harper. Any leader or politician who has not read it has failed. The book should be given to every secondary aged school student in Australia. I don't think I have said enough about the work of the Chapter One people. To have sold close to 40,000 copies of the book prior to us having open distribution is astonishing. Does this highlight that so much of a market exists outside of the Bookscan panel? I hope our traditional book trade will help us get the rest of the print run sold. There are plenty of good books in the WIP stage - as ever. I missed the good news that "Weed Foragers Handbook" is off for another reprint - will bring us close to 20,000 copies in print. Yee hah! DJ

Riding a motorbike in howling high winds and freezing temperatures to reach Nordkapp, the northern most point of Europe could have been disastrous. But for Shirley Hardy‐Rix and Brian Rix it was one of the best days of their lives. This is what the well‐travelled retired couple had hoped for when they planned to fill a gap in their riding experience and take on Scandinavia, the old Silk Road in Central Asia and the world’s largest country, Russia. They shipped their motorcycle to Greece and spent the next six months riding to the northern most tip of Europe and then taking the long road to Vladivostok in Russia. From freezing cold to the searing heat of 47°C in the deserts of Central Asia, Shirley and Brian pushed the boundaries, tackling icy roads and gravel tracks. They rode through water crossings and deep sand drifts to reach some of the most beautiful cities on the Silk Road. The Long Way to Vladivostok takes readers through some of the world’s most glorious and remote areas, sharing the joys and hardships of life on the road. Experience their travels from the comfort of your armchair or be inspired to pack your bags and hit the road. ‘Few books are as inspirational as that just written by Melbourne journalist Shirley Hardy‐Rix and her policeman husband Brian Rix.’ ‐ Herald Sun on Two for the Road
Author Information Since their first motorcycle ride from England to Australia through Europe, the Middle East and Asia, Shirley and Brian have ridden more than 170,000 kilometres through 68 countries over six continents. Brian retired in 2011 after serving as a policeman in Victoria for 36 years. During that time, he headed up the Homicide Squad, investigated drug trafficking, kidnappings, armed robberies and worked undercover. He spent the final five years of his career as President of the powerful police union, the Police Association. Shirley met Brian when working as a crime reporter on Melbourne television and radio. She is now a freelance journalist, magazine editor and publicist. She has published two collections of humorous police stories – Cops, Crooks and Catastrophes and More Cops, Crooks and Catastrophes.

Plenty of retirees take a holiday. When Brian Rix retired after 36 years as a policeman in Victoria rather than hitching up the caravan, he put his wife, journalist Shirley Hardy‐Rix, on the back of his motorcycle and headed off for a ride. For the next 16 months Brian and Shirley rode more than 83,000 kilometres through 32 countries on five continents with side trips to Antarctica and Galapagos Islands. They rode from the bottom of South America to the very top of North America. They rode over the Andes, sometimes more than 5,000 metres high. They rode through deserts, the tropics and up to Alaska. They had a catastrophic breakdown in the heart of bear country and suffered altitude sickness. The motorcycle didn't make it to Antarctica but they did ‐ taking them from Antarctica Circle to the Arctic Circle... and then a bit more. Beautifully illustrated in full colour throughout, Circle to Circle is an engaging account of the travels of an adventurous couple. It will entertain you in your armchair, or it may even inspire you to get up and go!

Roads are for journeys, not destinations. In 2003 Melbourne couple Shirley Hardy‐Rix and her husband Brian Rix fulfilled a lifelong ambition of motorcycling across the world. In an incredible 350‐day journey, they would do everything they'd ever dreamed of as well as getting much more than they'd bargained for. Crossing 27 countries and covering 56,671 kilometres, they raced around the Isle of Man motorcycle circuit on Mad Sunday, survived Iran's traffic and travelled through Taliban strongholds under armed guard. Shirley and Brian's story is an epic account of the ups and downs of seeing the world on two wheels ‐ from the frustrations of potholes and flat tyres, to the splendour of some of Europe and Asia's most awe‐inspiring sights. Full of terrific anecdotes, down‐to‐earth humour and practical advice, Two for the Road is a must for anyone who's ever imagined escaping the daily grind to experience the romance of the open road. Have you ever wondered why certain people seem to have all the luck? Well, "Don't" will show you how using certain words impact the brain, making you either more positive or negative in your outlook. People who have a more positive outlook use more positive language. They see opportunities that others miss ‐ they also see how these opportunities can be turned into real advantages. "Don't" sets out those negative words and phrases to avoid ‐ the ones that create negative thinking in your brain and result in negative behaviour ‐ and then suggests some words and phrases that do just the opposite. The end result? You will start to use positive words which activate the positive parts of your brain which then results in positive behaviour.
Author Bob Selden shows how we behave according to the words we use and hear. As an example, recent studies show that when young male drivers hear male-type words such as “tough” and “rough” they automatically increase their speed, yet hearing female-type words such as “pink” and “gentle” leads to a reduction in their speed. Bob poses the question; “Can the words we use in general conversation also impact our relationships?” Full of practical examples, stories, and “how to’s”, “Don’t” provides some fascinating insights into what makes us who we are. Bob will challenge some of your thinking on what makes some people more successful than others – in business, sport, relationships and life. Is it luck? Upbringing? Opportunity? Training? Or is it perhaps the words we use? Read his new book “Don’t” and make the call! Publicist Debbie McInnes has been appointed.

Thomas, a 23-year-old student priest, emerges alone from the wilderness four days after surviving a plane crash. But a missing woman's footprints are found with his, near the crash site. What part did Thomas play in her disappearance? And why does he claim he can remember nothing? Sent to a psychiatrist by Church authorities to recover his memories, Thomas' life and world unravel in ways he could never have foreseen, shaking the very foundations of his faith, his loyalty to the Catholic Church and the vocation he had chosen. Grappling with impossible expectations and burdened with guilt, the flawed characters show the consequences of oppressive rules colliding with impulses that can't be tamed. This compelling and timely novel explores the underpinnings of a deeply conservative Australian Catholic community in the 1950s whose outward piety hides a shameful underbelly that dares not be exposed.
Author Information John Watt was born in 1936 in Western Australia, and grew up in Perth. His early education was in Catholic schools, culminating in two and a half years in the local seminary. This was followed by studies in Arts at the University of Western Australia, and a PhD in philosophy at the Australian National University. After a few years teaching in high schools, he taught at Monash and Murdoch Universities, accumulating the standard academic's publication history, including three books and a couple of dozen journal articles. He coauthored a non-fiction work, The Whitefella Problem, with his late wife Wendy. He now lives south of Perth in Busselton, with his wife, Lesley, busying himself with the next piece of fiction, musical projects, and extendedfamily matters. Crooked Vows is his first foray into fiction.

From the bestselling author of A Bitter Harvest and Dragons in the Forest. Like many young and idealistic Australian men, Stephen Conway rushed to enlist in the 'war to end all wars' in 1914. After a hasty marriage, Stephen leaves his new wife with a baby on the way and is shipped to Gallipoli. Very soon, though, the promise of adventure and glory of battle vanish completely as the reality of war sets in. After four nightmarish years, Stephen is the lone survivor of his platoon fighting in the trenches of France's bloody battlefields. Traumatised and exhausted he inexplicably disappears and the official record of his life comes to an abrupt end ‐ that is until his grandson, Patrick, discovers his diary more than 80 years later. This personal account of the horrors of World War I propels Patrick on a journey to uncover the truth of his grandfather's fate ‐ which is more disturbing than he could have ever imagined. Set against true historical events, Barbed Wire and Roses deftly brings together past and present, ancestor and descendant, in a gripping tale of war and its aftermath. Luke Elliott and Claudia Marsden have fallen in love at a perilous time. The Second World War is raging in the Pacific, barbed wire and gun emplacements are strung along the northern beaches in preparation for invasion. As the war moves closer, their 'sextet' of loyal school friends is splintering as individual career dreams are pursued. Luke yearns to be a journalist but a start in newspapers is proving challenging. The war's end unexpectedly provides Luke's big break, but the pursuit of his dream will keep him away from Australia and Claudia, with surprising consequences for them both. "Above The Fold is a big‐hearted novel that explicitly examines notions of love and loyalty... Anyone who enjoys reading about post‐war Australian history and the attitudes that informed much of it, will be delighted." Gabrielle Lord, author of Dishonour "Written with meticulous detail, this is an engaging story spanning a tumultuous period in Australian history." Nicole Alexander, author of The Great Plains. For much of the World War II conflict, Japan had been a safe haven for its citizens, far, far away from Germany's relentless advance in Europe and the daily horrors of such events as the London blitz, concentration camps and the fall of France. But Alex Faure always felt that one day the war would come with a vengeance to the Land of the Rising Sun, although even he was astonished by the ferocity with which the Allied forces exacted their retribution on the place he's always called home. Up until then, life had been good for Alex in Japan. The son of a French father and White Russian mother, he grew up and went to school in the port of Yokohama. The local community of foreigners was a tight knit, highly social group, the bulk of whom spent their summers at the holiday playground of Karuizawa in the mountains. As a gaijin or European with a command of English, French and Japanese, Alex looked forward to a good life in Japan after graduating from school and completing his tertiary education at Harvard in the US. The morning of December 7, 1941, put an end to those expectations. The surprise attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbour immediately changed Japan's status as a neutral in the European war. From that time on life became increasingly difficult for Alex, his mother and sister, particularly after his father fled to Vietnam to avoid arrest by the Tokko ‐ Japanese special secret police. With his father's export business in tatters and the last of his mother's jewellery sold off, Alex was fortunate enough to secure a job at the Banque de l'Indochine, a French bank in Tokyo, while many of his European friends were locked out of work by the increasingly suspicious Japanese. Here he became embroiled in the murky world of propaganda, politics and clandestine financial deals, all as the war closed in. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

This ‘almost memoir’ is fiercely intelligent and so addictively personal that it is hard to put down. What the critics said: “…an eloquent book, a unique combination of compelling storytelling, searching reflection, with an extraordinary range of mood and style ‐ an original take on the art of life writing.” ‐ Arnold Zable
Author Information Richard Freadman was educated at Brandeis University and the University of Oxford. Now Emeritus Professor of English at La Trobe University he was the Founding Director of the Unit for Studies in Biography and Autobiography there and an international authority on autobiography, biography and other forms of 'life writing'. A Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, he now works as a volunteer making life writing available to people in dementia care, palliative care and cancer remission settings. He writes and lectures on illness narrative, and continues to write autobiography and short fiction. He is married with three children and currently divides his time between Melbourne and Florida, where his wife Diane is currently working in the corporate world. In Florida he has become an aficionado of alligators, and they, it seems to him, astonished observers of him.

Mothering with self‐awareness, authenticity, confidence and connectedness. Research in the area of maternal and infant mental health has reinforced what we already know; mothers who are sensitive, attuned and responsive to their babies create the relationship milieu for optimum brain development. The Conscious Mother takes mothers on a journey of self‐exploration to prepare them for, and support them through, motherhood. It is designed to hold your hand as you explore your own history of being mothered, your beliefs about mothering and the hopes and dreams you have for yourself and your baby. Becoming a mother is a profoundly life‐changing experience. The Conscious Mother is packed full of useful information to maximise your growth and avoid the pitfalls of your past. Create a more mindful and positive bond with your child. Love and nurture your children. Allow yourself to make mistakes, and love yourself, despite them. Popular leading Clinical Psychologist, Kirstin Bouse, takes you on a journey of self‐discovery, guiding you in how to know and accept yourself so that you can be the ultimate parent; the purposely imperfect mother. Kirstin Bouse has created a wonderful resource for both new mothers, and those who want to parent more consciously. She discusses important issues and imparts her wisdom in an easy-to-follow manner. This book isn’t just a ‘how-to,’ it also has sections designed to allow the reader to reflect on her own thoughts, and actively partake in reaching her goal to become a more conscious mother. Are you looking for advice on how to get more done in your life? Have you realised that just “pedalling” faster isn’t going to be a long‐term solution? Right now, does the load you are carrying seem to be getting bigger every day? Do you need smart, proven advice that has one specific outcome – helping you to get more of the right stuff done? If you answered yes to any of these questions then this book is for you. A crucial step to achieving more and procrastinating less is being able to hold yourself and others accountable. In Getting Stuff Done you will be introduced to an easy‐to‐understand framework – the Seven Steps to Accountability – that will help you achieve personal accountability, first for yourself and then with others. When we have personal accountability we are more engaged, productive, use our time better, have more satisfaction at work, have better relationships, and feel better about ourselves. “After reading this book you will know how to hold yourself accountable, hold others accountable and achieve the overall results and goals you have dreamed of.” – Jason Berther, McDonald’s Franchisee I think we are all trying to get more done (that ‘to do’ list just keeps getting longer). Sam’s book really helps as it provides a great framework to avoid procrastination, it helps clarify and identify priorities and it will show you how to get more done in your business, in your life – everywhere. Every business owner should read this book. – Andrew Griffiths, International Best Selling Author What makes it particularly powerful and different from most other books on the topic is that Sam gives away actual templates, spreadsheets and frameworks that you can literally copy and paste into your daily work life today to achieve more – in business and in life. – Dr David Dugan, Elite 500 Mastermind Author Information Sam Harrop is an experienced entrepreneur, speaker and trainer. He has built and sold a number of his own successful businesses and today Sam’s passion is working with small business owners, teams within organisations and even individuals, with one clear purpose in mind – to help them get stuff done. Rae Desmond Jones’ poetry specialises in precisely observed social and political phenomena. People and their often anti‐social impulses, as acted out in tension with their social context, give his poetry the power to unsettle and disturb, while maintaining the comic aspects of his subject’s humanity. In A Caterpillar on a Leaf, this gifted narrative poet turns away from explicit narrative and adopts the ghazal form in order to contemplate the deeper intuitive and psychological bases of literary and scientific meaning. Author Information Jones was born in Broken Hill in 1941, the son of a miner. He left school at 14 years of age and worked in a variety of manual occupations until he entered Sydney University in 1974 with WEA support. Since graduating from that University, he worked for some years in the then Commonwealth Employment Service where his industrial experience was extremely helpful. He spent the last years of his employment working as a history teacher in the public system. He is currently retired and applies himself full time to writing poetry.

The essays in this mischievously titled collection, How to Proceed, are, in the authors own words, 'apparently offhand, informal, digressive and unashamedly personal'. Perhaps, he suggests in the introduction, they are not really essays at all. They explore subjects ranging from the nature of time to the pleasures (and pitfalls) of walking, the mysteries of marriage to the matter of taking risks. Trust is scrutinized and the gaining of self‐knowledge tested. Always lively, often amusing, sometimes poignant, these verbal excursions make clear that, in most circumstances, discovering how to proceed is rarely less than tricky. Written with a poet's eye for detail ‐ the author is a distinguised poet ‐ this collection, whether focusing on the perils of modern transport or the potential satisfactions of curiosity, contains many surprising departures.
Author Information Andrew Sant was born in London in 1950, and came to Australia with his parents in 1962. He completed a BA degree at La Trobe University in Melbourne, and subsequently worked in a variety of occupations, including teaching and copywriting. After relocating to Hobart in the late 1970s, Sant founded the literary magazine Island with Michael Denholm in 1979, the pair remaining as co‐editors until 1990. In 1989 he was made a member of the Literature Board of the Australia Council. More recently he has lived in Melbourne, but has also spent considerable time in writer-inresidence positions overseas: he was writer-in-residence at the University of Peking, in Beijing, China, in 2001; Writing Fellow at Leicester University in the UK between 2002 and 2005, and in 2007–2008, Writing Fellow at the University of Chichester, in West Sussex, UK. Sant began publishing poetry in Australian literary magazines and journals from the late 1970s. His first collection of poems, Lives, was published by Angus and Robertson in 1980, and he has since published ten further collections, including a volume of new and selected poems, Tremors (2004), and a volume of selected poems published in the UK, The Unmapped Page. His work has attracted significant critical attention, and is often praised for its urbane and witty character. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

From the arrival of the First Fleet to the present day, Irish immigrants and their descendants have been at the centre of Australian life. In Sinners, Saints & Settlers, author Richard Reid and photographer Brendon Kelson take the reader on a journey through the Irish experience in Australia, visiting locations right across the nation where the Irish story unfolds. The book concentrates on the period 1788 to 1921, when the Irish presence in Australia was proportionately at its most influential and visible. It spans the years between the Irish rebellion of 1798, which had a profound effect on the emerging colony of New South Wales, and 1921, the achievement of modern Irish independence. Richard Reid was born in Ireland, educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and came to Australia in 1972. His primary interests are in Irish and Australian history, especially the history of Australians at war, and he has published extensively on these topics. Currently, he is a senior curator at the National Museum of Australia, where he is preparing a major exhibition on the story of the Irish in Australia. Brendon Kelson is a heritage photographer and historical researcher. He has been senior arts policy adviser to four

This book focuses on a little known but fascinating contribution by Thomas Baines to Augustus Gregory's North Australian Expedition: the artist‐explorer's audacious attempt, in an open longboat, to link up with Gregory at the southern end of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Here, for the first time, the remarkably accurate map that Baines complied of this voyage and extracts from his accompanying manuscript journals are evaluated and published.

We have more foods to choose from than ever before, yet we still make choices that harm our health. We buy these foods for convenience and because of their sugar, salt and fat appeal to our tastebuds. It is a seemingly unstoppable trend that is driving global epidemics of diabetes, cancers, stroke and heart disease. Fast foods and processed snacks typically supply fattening kilojoules but little fibre and few of the vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients that contribute to our wellbeing. Successful author, Jack Crane has written a book set in the beautiful garden of the house where he lived as a ten‐year‐ old: a garden full of mystery, secrets and challenges. The story is of an unhappy child who discovers that the ornaments in this special place come to life when night falls and how they welcome him into their world of magic, hope and friendship. Jack's children believe their father when he tells them that the story is just a fantasy, until one day when Mia, the six‐ year‐old daughter, confronts her father: 'Daddy, I saw one of them. She ran away when I said your name. But she was real. I know she was!'
Author Information Sue Burnell lives with her husband and two dogs in the picturesque Coromandel Valley in the Adelaide Hills. She majored in children’s literature at college as part of her Diploma of Teaching, and after gaining her Bachelor of Special Education, Sue specialised in dealing with children having learning difficulties. In 2000 she resigned from classroom teaching after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. She then started her own tutoring venture and commenced working on her first novel, Jack Crane’s Secret World.

This is a delightfully written and illustrated book that tells the story of a young girl who comes home to find that the TV isn't working. After her initial frustration she ventures outside to discover a wonderful world of nature and play. The book extols the virtues of the simple pleasures in life and will help parents to get the message across that the enjoyment of TV (and other addictive forms of digital entertainment) need to be balanced with the joy of outdoor experiences.
Author Information 283
Vicki Chan has four children, each growing up with a voracious appetite for books. She spent years of her life seeking out the very best of children's books and enjoyed reading them as much as her children loved hearing them. Now, she is writing stories of her own in between catching babies as a midwife on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Johanna Bessière studied art in Paris, France. She graduated from Gobelins School of Animated Cinema in 2007. She has been working as an artist and an animator ever since and is passionate about telling stories through pictures. She lived in Australia for a year in 2010 and is currently back in Europe. www.dennisjones.com.au Find us on Facebook Dennis Jones & Associates

There was a flash of lightning. The wind screeched. And the thunder roared... Discover what happens when Boo, the owlet, leans out of the hollow to see what the noise is all about. Boo and the Big Storm is a profoundly moving story about compassion. Wendy Lawrence's text is poignant in its simplicity and powerful in the message it carries: That a love and an understanding of one's local natural environment can have a far-reaching healing effect on all involved. Glen Vause's illustrations compliment the words perfectly with their rich use of texture and lighting, and they create, for the reader, the irresistible character of Boo, a baby owl. Visually, the book is stunning and reads aloud beautifully for young children. All in all, Boo and the Big Storm is a timely work in its themes and a superb addition to this year's list of new Australian picture books. Matt Ottley - Author Artist Musician What a treasure of a picture book: "Boo" is an absolute star! This fast-paced, tension-filled story will have little ones on the edge of their seats, hanging on every word until 'their' loveable little owl is safe. Both Boo and Farmer Goodman have delightful personalities, and it takes real talent to be able to bring that out with such economy of text. I can't wait for Wendy Lawrence's next book - and I predict her young fans will be ahead of me in the queue!
