Words from the Wise
March 2016 Each time I write I think about what happens around me and the people we know; my colleagues and contemporaries. So I just wanted to mark the recent passing of some of them. Peter Milne was a real supporter of our craft, being at Abbeys for 40 years or so. The sort of person that when on my Sydney visits I would say "Is Peter available?" and of course he was always present. And followed some form of book trade practice by being a racehorse owner. I also discovered yesterday that Bob Carter passed as well: he was the co-author of our book Taxing Air the book and eBook that has sold some 5000 copies. And this morning I am on my way to the funeral of David Conners. David was part of the A&R retail structure in the 1980's. He with his colleagues placed orders for the likes of "Poor Fellow My Country" and Pizzey's "Field Guide to the Birds of Australia" to allow us (previous employer) to make special edition print runs and the forerunner to this style of special edition publishing - they were the first. David had a career in publishing and eventually his own publishing house in Alto Books. Farewell to these fine people. The Americans have an expression "right out of the gate". Well that sums up our January frenzy. We have had more staff at work this January than any January I can remember. The reprint of Moroccan Soup Bar arrived as did another print of The Grade Cricketer and our third print (POD) of Breakfast with Bails and this week our Hinkler School Zone arrived. So our work currently is to physically create pallet space for maybe 100,000 units to arrive over the next weeks and reduce inventory by 200,000 units to allow the new books to be located and picked. Our Australian list of titles is likely to go over 4,000 titles by mid year. We are also building the knowledge of our major titles to come for the 6 months and then the year. I won't say it is impossible, but I would say it is complex as we don't have overseas list to plan from. An example is the book by Ryan Mathew Schulz Glitter, Blood & Tears. Like so many books an email was forwarded to me "I am considering setting up via Creatspace etc, how does that work with you: well it does not sit easily. So within days the book had a form of redesign from Working Type, then uploaded to Lightning Source, and the eBook converted by Winking Billy, then the short run POD stock
ordered, delivered to Perth for the launch and the book appearing in this new title order form. Three weeks. I know some of the shops can't cope with this sort of speed of publication, however the book will be on our daily feeds and will have very strong Australian demand and I think a broader overseas market. This one book publisher is not on title page. Also the stage version of Beyond Priscilla is on this order form. Again the publisher sent the file this week, it was formatted to POD specification and both the print and eBook will be available week after next. Keeping cool under hot conditions. We are trying to put our business operating system to the "Cloud" as this allows some real time benefits and reduces some of the commercial inputs required manually, it also gives us unlimited "seats" to allow more remote users of the system. And it backs up without us having to have that irritating shut down at about 4.30 each afternoon. And with daylight savings time this annoys our customers in Qld and Perth. Problem is the conversion has failed three times, meaning more work on the data file, more interrogation of old unreconciled accounts, and so on. Looking forward to good demand for the new titles on this list and worked out that we have many books with publicists engaged. (Probably more than this.) 1. Clouds of Glory - author is North Shore based and the publicist is Max Markson. 2. Accidentally Istanbul - author is from NSW & Media by Debbie McInnes 3. The Tortoise in Asia - media by Debbie McInnes 4. Reinventing Emma - media by Debbie McInnes 5. Can My Pony Come Too? - author Canberra based and media by Alan Davidson Best wishes DJ

'Still, he looked for hoof prints, glad there was nobody to laugh at him for doing so. He shaded his eyes and squinted at a dark object, half covered in sand, then began to walk towards it. He should should have been wearing sunglasses to protect his eyes, but he never thought of things like that. It was a women's coat, black, or at least it has been.' A young camel disappears from its trainers paddock and the coat of a murdered women is found abandonded in the sand dunes. These seemingly unrelated events are a far cry from the regular police duties of Constable Chris Blackie and his rookie recruit from Melbourne, Anthea Merritt, in the small seaside town of Queenscliff. Little by little and with a burgeoning sense of menace, these two unlikely detectives carefully navigate the eclectic, often eccentric personalities of the town, as well as the disdian of law enforcement collegues further afield, to uncover the unsettling truth. Described as a 'sea‐change mystery' Through a Camel's Eye deftly juxtaposes the idyllic surroundings of a coastal Victorian town with e gravity of murder. Author Information Dorothy is the author of nine published novels, including a quartet of mystery novels set in Canberra and a self-published collection of short stories, Eight Pieces on Prostitution. The first of her mystery series, The Trojan Dog, was joint winner ACT Book of the Year, and the Age gave it their ‘Best of 2000’ in the crime section. The second, The White Tower, was also published in Australia and North America, and the third, Eden, appeared in 2007. All three feature the cyber-sleuth Sandra Mahoney and her partner, Ivan Semyonov, along with Detective Sergeant Brook, of the ACT police. The Fourth Season, the last book in the quartet, was published as an ebook in 2014. With Eden, she returned to the subject of prostitution, which has long interested her and provided inspiration. Dorothy's first novel, Tunnel Vision, is set in a Melbourne massage parlour. One of her literary novels, The House at Number 10, imagines Canberra from a sex-worker’s point of view. She has also published non-fiction pieces on the subject, including A Script With No Words. Two of Dorothy's literary novels, One for the Master and Ruth, have been shortlisted for the Miles Franklin award. Maralinga My Love is set during the time of the atomic bomb tests at Maralinga, in South Australia. Dorothy has had numerous short stories published in magazines and anthologies and regularly reviews for Fairfax newspapers. She has completed an historical novel, Children of Ghosts and a novella, Ashes from the Headland. She has been a guest speaker at the Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, and Salamanca festivals; at the Canberra Word Festival, and both Australian Sisters in Crime conferences. Overseas invitations have included the Salzburg seminar on contemporary fiction, and residencies at Ledig House, International Writers Colony New York, and Lavigny in Switzerland. Dorothy is a founding member of the influential ‘7 Writers’ group, which began meeting in Canberra in the early 1980s, and has continued as a writers’ workshop and discussion group for almost twenty years. A subject which continues to fascinate her from a literary point of view is Canberra, Australia’s national capital, where she has lived for thirty years before returning to Victoria. Canberra features often in her fiction. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

This book presents the story of Australian Lieutenant Colonel Syd Kyle‐Little's involvement in the Malayan 'Emergency' of 1951‐1956. This was a guerrilla war fought between the Commonwealth Armed Forces and the military arm of the Malayan Communist Party, in which Syd Kyle‐Little commanded a force of 12,000 Malay villagers. Kyle‐Little was a larger‐than‐life character ‐ the type of man that Australia's Northern Territory seems to breed better than many other parts of the country. His keen observations and diligent record‐keeping make this book engaging and often disturbing reading as he articulately describes years of training and fighting in inhospitable jungle. The men who fought in this conflict, that was called an 'Emergency' instead of a war, were all heroes who won the battle against the communist insurgents because their hearts and minds rejected the communist way of life. Due largely to the efforts of men such as Kyle‐Little and the 12,000 Malay soldiers, Malaysia the free, independent and proud nation it is today. '...as I look back on my life, I wonder how and why it was that I survived, for I have led no ordinary way of life.' ‐ Syd Kyle‐Little. This account of Syd Kyle‐Little's time in Malaya, published posthumously, is a sequel to Whispering Wind, the autobiography of Kyle‐Little's life in the Northern Territory from 1946‐1950.

‘It’s always hot in Australia. And you can ride your horses to school and tie them up under a gumtree,’ my mother told us with a knowing smile, as we stared at her in awe. Gathered on a cold, misty morning in their Georgian mansion on the shores of Lough Derg in depressed 1950s’ Ireland, with debts mounting, this seemed like a dream for the prominent Esmonde family, including the teller of this captivating memoir, then seven-year-old, Rosemary. Hardship awaits down under, but Rosemary and her family bravely fight back, seizing every opportunity and experience with courage and humour. Rosemary’s remarkable story has many twists and turns as she moves from Tipperary to remote rural New South Wales, post war Canberra, as a young bride to Papua New Guinea, apple orcharding and setting up a successful business in Tasmania and sailing the Mediterranean (where she and her husband, Rob are compiling their fifth photographic coffee table book on sailing, seafood and wine). Come with her as we meet her illustrious ancestors (including two Victoria Cross recipients), encounter exotic countries and fascinating people, always living her life to the brim. SAI Publishing Pty Ltd
Millie Phillips has written a unique page-turner that details her life and that of her eldest daughter, Lynette, who tragically died at twenty-four. Arriving in Australia at age nine from Poland in 1938 to escape the threat of Nazism, Millie entered Paddington Public School, learned English, learned shorthand typing and entered the work force at fifteen. At seventeen, she married a man who disliked work. She went to England as a war bride, before returning to Australia with her husband on a ten pound migrant ticket and opened her first shop at eighteen. In 1956, aged 27, she left the abusive marriage with her three children aged six, three and two. Opened a boarding house with a borrowed $6,000, which she pyramided to become one of Australia’s wealthiest self-made women. The media branded her as Mining Millie, Nickel Queen, Woman in a Man’s world. She was Australia’s first entrepreneurial business woman. It encouraged Australian women to depart their traditional domestic role to assume their rightful place in society. Millie was the first woman to acquire mineral exploration areas, float and chair public companies. She also created private businesses including land development, building, hospitality, aged care facilities and a string of other ventures. Millie was the first Australian woman to attend Harvard Business Summer School in Hawaii. At eighty-six, she still runs her businesses. Tel Aviv University, one of the worlds most prestigious, recently awarded her with an Honorary Doctorate for being a philanthropist and an inspiration to women. She has donated some $20 million to schools, children’s and religious causes. Her trusts continue donating. Her estate will be left to charity. Clouds of Glory documents her eldest daughter, Lynette’s tragic life caused by her father in his acrimonious divorce. Meanwhile, though wealthy, he paid pittance in family support. Lynette was a highly sensitive, spiritual child who reacted with emotional confusion. All her life she hungered to know which parent to believe. She found the answer in death. Part two of this story Birth Is But A Forgetting records the five diarised years when Millie achieved her dream of becoming a twentieth century Orpheus who followed the loved one into the Underworld. Millie and Lynette communicated daily. Lynette took her to highly evolved Spirit entities dedicated to spiritualising humankind and to assist the ‘dead’ to move to higher realms. They taught and showed Millie their world. Only when Lynette was healed and believed her mother was ready to be left did she depart for her future life. The story is engrossing and beautifully told and will leave readers with a new view of life. Publicity - Publicist Max Markson has been appointed - Expect extensive coverage across all media forms

Nancy Knudsen never meant to go to Istanbul. Maybe she might have included it as part of a holiday along with dazzling European cities such as Venice, Paris or Salzburg. But, Anglican that she was, actually to live in a Muslim country, even though she had lapsed to atheism and agnosticism, seemed alien. To spend time as an ordinary citizen rather than tourist or expat corporate executive, would never have occurred to her. Knudsen’s story is vivid, lively and sometimes hilarious, full of insights into things she wished she’d known before she arrived in an all‐black apartment above a sportsfield, with not a word of Turkish. She found nothing in guidebooks or histories to help her find a cut of meat she recognised or get the leaky bathroom tap fixed. She had to find her own way into what seemed at first a very strange society. After a time living with her architect husband as he lectured at a local university and she taught English to businessmen and refugee children, she had made many Turkish friends and begun to understand something of a rich, complex, ancient culture. She found she was changed forever—in ways that still astonish her. She introduces curious readers to the Istanbul she and Ted have come to love. Her personal love affair with this great city may well act as a springboard for others. Publicity - Publicist Debbie McInnes has been appointed - Expect coverage in all forms of media

“Tony Grey’s book shows us that the Silk Roads are an endless and magical resource in which fact and fiction merge and the imagination revels.” ‐ Edmund Capon Rudyard Kipling once said “East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,” but Tony Grey disagrees. A stage actor, lawyer, mining entrepreneur, businessman, arts patron and now historical fiction author, Tony has been captivated by the stories from the Silk Road for many years. It was during one of his many ventures to the region that he stumbled across a mysterious legend which sparked his curiosity and has seen him pen his first work of fiction. Gansu, a province in Western China has long been the subject of mysterious legend as a small group of its inhabitants appear partly Caucasian. The Tortoise in Asia explores the theory that locals in the region are actually descendants of Roman legionnaires who once travelled the Silk Road. With a keen interest in history and culture, Tony delved headfirst into researching this idea and has expressed his findings through a remarkable work of historical fiction. The Tortoise in Asia follows the adventure of Marcus, a young Roman legionnaire who is taken prisoner with some of his cohort by the Parthians after the Battle of Carrhae in 53BC. Marched east along the Silk Road, Marcus and his men escape and become mercenaries for a ferocious Hun warlord. They are eventually co‐opted by the victorious Chinese Han army, and lay down their arms in Gansu, far from the known Roman Empire. Tony Grey has travelled extensively along the Silk Road and is fascinated by the relationship it reveals between the cultures of the East and West. With its title inspired by the testudo, or tortoise formation used by the Roman legions during battles, The Tortoise in Asia examines the closeness of the two cultures on a fundamental level, and how it resonates in the 21st Century. Author Information Tony Grey graduated in History and practiced law in Toronto before emigrating to Australia where he founded and built Pancontinental Mining Ltd, a publicly listed diversified resource company. He is a former director of Opera Australia and the Conservatorium of Music, and a former trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. He is a past Chairman of the Brain Foundation, a charity to raise funds for neurological research, and is currently on the Board. His involvement in international mining ventures, which have taken him to many faraway locations, informs the books he has written. Jabiluka (1994) was followed by East Wind (2008), a cultural journey from Greece to the Great Wall of China, and Seven Gateways, (2013), travels to seven places of spiritual significance. Matt’s background is in professional sport where he played 102 games over 8 years as an AFL (Australian Rules League) footballer for the Melbourne Demons football club, between 2004-2012.He is now a certified holistic nutrition practitioner with the College of Natural health after completing a bachelor and masters of science in holistic nutrition, and is currently studying to finish his Ph.D. in holistic sports nutrition. Tegan is also studying at the college of natural health and her family are the owners and founders of ‘Urban Projuice’ one of Melbourne’s top wholefood cafe’s. Matt and Tegan have dedicated their lives to discovering the best natural health principles and have worked tirelessly over the last 2 years to put these principles together in their new book ‘365 Days of Wholeness – Understanding the conditions your body needs to thrive on a daily basis’. 365 Days of Wholeness was written to be your guide and a beacon of clarity and truth in a world where there is so much misinformation and confusion. Unfortunately, none of us were given a manual on how to operate our bodes when we are born, instead we learn and adopt the habits of our society and families. These same learned habits are currently sending us as a collective down the dark road of disease, and it’s time for a new approach. 365 Days of Wholeness is the new approach that can guide you towards the vibrant health that is your birthright. In 2015, Baptcare celebrated it seventieth anniversary. Beginning with the establishment of Strathalan Aged Care Home by Reverend William Pope in 1945, this book celebrates the people and institutions that made Baptcare what it is today. The organisation’s most prominent workers have always upheld the core values of Respect, Justice, Commitment, Integrity, Accountability and Co‐operation, as demonstrated by their stories. The subjects of these stories have one thing in common: they must have achieved a first. From the first Baptist aged care home to the first disability support program in Tasmania, these legends and landmarks have taken the organisation from its humble beginnings, through to being the pillar of the community it is today. Baptcare is now able to care for people from all walks of life, including children, families, older people, people with disabilities and asylum seekers. Baptcare is proud to present ten stories that will give incredible insight into the founding and growth of one of the Baptist community’s most significant organisations. Available Now

Melbourne through my lens
This book is a collection of images from my home town of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
A collection of artistic images by photographer Will Faulkner
I am a 4th generation Melbournian and I love this city. These images are the results of many hundreds of kilometres of walking the streets looking for those perfect angles. Usually I would spend 5 to 6 hours walking, ending up with blisters most days, to find an angle that I liked. Then I would make a note of the location and which way the sun rose or set on the scene and come back when the light was right. Then I would arrive at the scene well ahead of the light I wanted, set up and wait patiently. But of course sometimes the shots just didn't work, for example a person might walk into the shot and decide to start watching the sunset just at the moment of pressing the shutter. Or I might wait all day to get a shot of Federation square, take the tram into the city only to find that there is construction set up in my scene. Such is the life of a landscape photographer.

Are newspapers dead? As resources for daily newspapers are reduced the roles of newspaper photographers and journalists are likewise under pressure. This second book on Photography of The Age by Kathleen Whelan looks at the impact of the digital age on professional photographers and provides an insight into how they bring to the readers what is important; socially, politically and historically. Photography of The Age also provides historical context of some of the most famous images published, why they are chosen as well as technical information from the photographers themselves on how they produced such memorable images. Author Information Kathleen Whelan, an experienced educator, artist and photographer has lectured in photography and theory for over 30 years. She has written TAFE curriculum for Victoria and been an executive member of The TAFE Art and Design Statewide Committee (now Media Art and Design). Kathleen possesses a Masters Degree in Education from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia USA. She has participated in hundreds of exhibitions and her work is represented in collections in Australia, the USA and Peru. She has contributed to many newspapers, professional and craft journals. The Real Food for Kids Cook book is a unique cookbook designed for parents to share with their children. Created and written by talented Tasman chef Eloise Emmett, ‘The Real Food for Kids Cookbook’ brings something exciting and fresh to the Tasmanian kitchen and table. “Kids love helping in the kitchen so why not get them involved! I am passionate about ‘real food’, simple, unpretentious ‘home-grown’, home-cooked food to prepare and share with my children. Cooking is creative, and can be exciting, stimulating and fun whilst helping kids develop an appreciation for and love of good food. Kids learn that ‘real food‘, grown and cooked with love can be delicious as well as nutritious!” “Cooking is also a great way for parents and kids to share a meaningful experience, whilst also providing a perfect opportunity to experiment and develop skills important for healthy development.” The recipes are designed for parents and kids of ‘all ages’ to share, starting with the simplest recipes and progressing to the more complex”. The emphasis of The Real Food for Kids Cookbook is on simple recipes that are easy to follow, packed with flavour and that incorporate lots of fun techniques to entertain the kids and keep them engaged. “Cooking will only remain a cool activity if the kids are having fun and the food is delicious!” Incorporating traditional methods of food preparation is also a core element of the cookbook. “Traditional methods of food preparation are much more tactile and inject and element of fund into the whole cooking experience. And yes, fortunately (or unfortunately depending on your perspective) that means sticky hands and faces and plenty of mess in the kitchen - in other words kids heaven!” Author Information Eloise has always been passionate about using locally sourced and seasonal ingredients in her cooking simply because fresh ‘homegrown’ produce tastes better! She also loves the fact that her children understand where their food comes from and how it grows. Eloise is a professional chef with over 20 years’ experience working in commercial kitchens, including seven years as head chef of her own popular restaurant ‘The Mussel Boys’ on the Tasman Peninsula that she opened at the tender age of 26 by selling her Dodges Ferry home, and moving to the Tasman Peninsula. The Mussel Boys Restaurant was reported as ‘one of the best country eateries in the state’ by respected food writer Graeme Phillips for its inspirational and pioneering menu that specialised in showcasing fresh local and seasonal produce long before it became fashionable do to so. Other career highlights for Eloise include working as a chef on Bedarra Island, creating innovative daily menus for the 30 privileged guests on the exclusive Island resort and working as head chef at Hobart’s T42 restaurant and the Astor Grill.

The Kelly Gang
The Kelly Gang: Or, The Outlaws of the Wombat Ranges was produced by George Wilson Hall, the owner of the Mansfield Guardian in 1879. It is the first and rarest book on Ned Kelly, there being only four copies known to exist, with none in private hands. Hall was close to several informants and appears to have exceptional first‐hand accounts of Stringybark Creek and other Kelly encounters. This new edition includes rare photographs of the participants from the period.

Big is a hefty cross-dresser and Little is little. Both are long used to the routines of boarding house life in the inner suburbs of Melbourne, but Little, with the prospect of an inheritance, is worrying Big with by indulging in dreams of home owenership. Little’s cousin, Angus, is a solitary man who designs lake-scapes for city councils, and fireproof houses for the bushfire zone. A handy man, he meets Jasmin – an academic who races in her ideas as much as in her runners. Her head is set on publishing semiotics books on semiotics, her heart is turned towards her stalled personal life. All four are waiting, for something, if not someone. I knew Philip was a poet but it was obvious to me by the final round that he was also a wonderful storyteller. As you are about to see, I was right. John Clarke Stories with flashes of poetry and sudden insight and such profound compassion that they should be labelled – WARNING: Could make the reader kinder. Send a copy to a politician. Sue Woolfe Author Information Philip Salom comes from Western Australia and lives in Melbourne. He is twice winner of the Commonwealth Prize for Poetry. His poetry and fiction have won and been nominated for many awards including WA and Victorian Premier’s Awards. Waiting is his third novel.

Beyond Priscilla: The Play is an adaptation to the stage of Beyond Priscilla: One Man, One Gay Truck, One Big Idea by Daniel Withaus. It traces the 266‐day 'Beyond "That's So Gay" National Tour' and brings to life the LGBTI stories of regional and rural Australia. Gavin Roach's energetic adaptation offers audiences and readers a unique insight into how homophobia manifests itself across our social landscape, some twenty years after the movie Priscilla hit the silver screen. Beyond Priscilla: The Play premiered at Midsumma 2016. All proceeds from the play go to support the National Institute for Confronting Homophobia Education (NICHE). www.niche.org

When William Blake meets Hello Kitty there's bound to be sparks. Happy Avatar transports the reader into a mingled reality of sampled voices, incongruous idioms and enchanting distractions. Bite‐sized mashups from celebrity gossip sites, click‐bait headlines, intimate messages and serious socio‐political analysis mix with Shakespearean form and Biblical rhythms. While revelling in the shiny tackiness of a ceaseless information stream, Happy Avatar, offers its readers unsettling meditations on the problem of infinite regress, the crisis of capitalist accumulation and climate change. Formally provocative and absurdly intelligent, D.J. Huppatz's first major collection challenges us to reconsider poetry's place in 21st Century life.

If you want a read that is funny, fast, informative, and not quite politically correct, then follow the 1960s and 70s law‐ enforcement career of Nicholas John Lalor from the wilds of Tasmania, where he deals with Noops and Phantom Flushers, to the Big Smoke where, on joining the Narcotics Bureau, he runs into the major drug trafficker and arch nemesis, John 'Long Dong' Silver, who is protected by the usual mix of corrupt lawyers, judges and politicians. Trained by the tough Sergeant Jack and the even tougher Masher Moody, but ably assisted by Confidential Informant 117, Mad Dog Morgan, the Sandman and Tessie Truelove, Lalor learns his lessons the hard way, and comes to understand that multiculturalism has another side the do‐gooders and those in power do not want to know about. Along the way, Lalor picks up the Narcotics Bureau mascot, Clarence the Crocodile; a classy lady of the night, Stormy Summers; Crankcase the Bikie; the heroin dealer, Tatti; and finds himself pulled on like a sock by the clever Sydney coppers before dealing with Mustapha, the crazy American Muslim Crotch‐Dog. Often in trouble, but always taking a very practical view of the law, Lalor falls in with the highly obnoxious Filipino policeman Captain Terrific before finally triumphing over 'Long Dong' Silver. Or does he?

A Beginning in Ammonia continues the adventure... So the Ammonia Factory at Muddy River Bay is now operating. Of course, now the hard slog of building it, and the excitement of commissioning it, are over, everyone expects life will be quieter. But there's always something to bother a manager, such as getting sales up to match production, and the behaviour of the people close to the manager, and the enterprising nature of junior engineers, and what comes from the organisation levels above him, all causing a mix of good results and headaches. And that's some of what being a manager is all about. Yes that's some of it, but the work around a manager causes other events to occur, so there's no end to what circumstances can throw up.

DISCOVER THE POWER For a small group of teenagers in the English town of Sysmith, life couldn’t have been any more normal. After spending almost twenty years going through school, getting into arguments over the most pointless of things and randomly falling in love with people they had only just met, the individuals in this group were a shining example of how life should be lived, but soon this would all change. After watching a flashing comet fly across the night sky, the group slowly begin to realise that one by one they are starting to exhibit strange abilities that they soon begin to refer to as ‘the elements’. But this of course is only the beginning of the story. How will the group react to discovering their astonishing powers? Will they go mad? Will they use them for the greater good? And how will it change them from who they once were? Only one thing is certain, when the Elementals discover their powers, nothing will ever be the same again.

International author, speaker and business growth expert Ian Marsh shares decades of wisdom in this breakthrough business book. 95% of business owners never achieve more than $1,000,000 in turnover, and only 39% of them are profitable. This information has the ability to change those stats if you have the courage to look in the mirror. You’ll learn: • Why 7 small changes to what you are doing in business will probably translate to millions of dollars in improved results for you. • How many business owners that know these truths are now making more money in a month than they used to make all year. • The world has lied to you. The movie the Matrix is real. The First World War was an unprecedented conflict that reshaped the global political landscape and modern attitudes to warfare, valour and patriotism. And for the fledgling nations of Australia and New Zealand it was yet more: the cauldron in which their identities were forged, the international stage on which they first performed and drew praise, the foundation of many of their institutions and traditions. This handsomely produced volume recounts the traumatic years of 1914 to 1918 through the 'voices' of those involved ‐ the diaries and letters of officers, soldiers and nurses; the pronouncements of politicians and strategists; the songs sung on marches and in concert halls; the poems and memoirs that questioned the war, celebrated its victories and lamented its calamitous losses. Richly illustrated, it is a fascinating history, a beautiful commemorative keepsake, and a moving tribute to those who fought to defend their way of life. Key Sales Points Personal experiences of the ANZACs in all the theatres of the First World War—unforgettable true stories. Powerful quotes and images, carefully chosen to provide much rare and newly discovered material, unique to this book. Startling commentary from Turks and Germans —find out how the enemy saw Australians and New Zealanders at war. Includes guides for tracing family involvement in the war and visiting major battlefields.

The Anzacs: 100 Years On in Story and Song is a unique contribution to the commemoration of the centenary of the Anzacs. Ted Egan weaves personal stories and songs into a highly readable history of the Anzacs and the two nations, with amusing anecdotes and tales of great courage and ingenuity serving to leaven somewhat the brutal truth exposed, of a tragic and senseless war. The soldiers, nurses, politicians, wives, and the mothers who lost their sons, or welcomed them home severely damaged, all feature in this book and its songs. Egan's stories and poignant songs infuse the facts with the pain and loss (of life and innocence) and suffering that this war created both on the battlefields and in every Australian and New Zealand home. Listening to the songs is an unmissable, profoundly illuminating experience ‐ you cannot fail to feel deeply and viscerally every chapter of this historical period, as if you were there ‐ the excitement of the big adventure, the horrendous reality, the ultimate betrayal by the leaders of the day, the grim legacy of the aftermath for so many. The loss of innocence. Ted Egan deplores the war, but in this book and songs, he salutes the spirit of the Anzacs ‐ their blind impulsive bravery, their irrepressible larrikinism and steadfast loyalty to their mates that created heroes from these volunteers and conscripts.

Honey has been an important food for people for thousands of years. Their desire for it led to the, domestication of bees, through crafting artificial beehives and manipulating the bees' food sources. But quite apart from the harvests of honey and wax, the life‐giving role of bees in pollinating many plants that people rely on for food, has made them the stuff of legend, mystery, worship and, nowadays, also controversy. Although some people believe that our reliance on bees for the cultivation of food crops is much exaggerated (as some major staples like rice, wheat and even potatoes don't need them), there is no doubt that there are many crops whose very survival depends on bees. And that is why the recent, somewhat mysterious decline in bee populations around the world is so concerning to people who worry about the future of our natural environment. Anyone interested in growing food, who wants to find out what a beehive or two will give them, even on such a small scale as the suburban backyard or the terrace‐house garden, will find this book an indispensable introduction to keeping bees.

Let no one think this is simply a human version of Wine Dogs. It's a great deal more than that; Bernadette is a superb photographer with great imagination, a great sense of humour, and writes with flair. Every photograph and its accompanying story is a joy to look at and to read. It's hard to say more, so compelling are the images. One wouldn't normally expect to use the words 'page turner' (more often used for a well written crime thriller), but once you open the book, you will be swept along through to the finish. ‐ James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion True Stories: Portraits of Barossa Winemakers is a collection of photographic portraits of winemakers with their hobbies ‐ an insight into their personality, beyond their wine brand. Accompanying each image I have written a story reflecting the conversations we had during the photo sessions and each winemaker has also contributed their own piece. The photographic style and theme allowed the winemakers to comfortably be themselves and reveal not just who they are, but interesting tales about themselves as well. The narrative shares those stories in the same whimsical, relaxed fashion in which they were first discussed. As a collective, the characters in this book display a snap shot of a section of today's Barossa culture.

Australia promised a fresh start for Lucy Straughan and her father when they fled war‐torn Ireland. Instead, Lucy was stricken by polio. Having mastered the cello during her prolonged confinement, Lucy is now fifteen, lonely and full of questions. Suddenly she is thrust into a string quartet and meets quixotic Della Sotheby, hot‐headed Pim Connolly and precocious Phoebe Raye. The experience transforms each of their lives as they forge friendships and share not a few family secrets. Set against the vivid backdrop of 1920s Sydney, A Distant Prospect is an intimate, hilarious and ultimately deeply moving coming‐of‐age adventure told with a touch of poetry by a quintessentially Irish narrator. Weakness is the strength of bullies, humiliation is the power of the victims. “Sunwuns” It’s an acronym for someone-you-need-when-you-need-someone. Upon reading the impression is entertaining and educational. The introduction of a shadow, as a teacher of “TIME” indicates the creation of earth, at the first sunlight, came the first shadow. The main characters have no Nationality: colour, class or creed, as it is not intended. Children are children, we too at Clarissa’s age of twelve. Dr Ann Inagamells stated in her letter, “she was pleased for the opportunity of reading a well developed story.” The novel bully is eventually defeated, “By thought.” All readers will take something from this book and make it their own however the message is clear, we as a society must not tolerate bullying nor make excuses for it, instead,we must stand together and humiliate the perpetrator. “Sunwuns” is education in the form of a novel and has something for tweens through to adults; in particular those who are acting as parents. The underlying message within the story line is that bullying is life setting from all it’s perspectives. Educating children is the first step to overcoming bullying and “Sunwuns” empowers children by giving them tools to tackle bullies and bullying. Children, parents and educators should all appreciate the story which is “Sunwuns” Available Now

The newborn lambs are going missing and Matthew thinks the bunyip that lives in a cave under the water in their billabong is taking them. His grandfather told him about it. His mum, dad and big brother say bunyips don’t exist, but Matthew is not so sure. He and his grandfather camp out one night to watch the sheep. Matthew sees a dark shape dive into the waterhole. Now he is sure it is the bunyip. His big brother brings home his scuba gear to find out once and for all what Matthew saw diving into the billabong. Will they find the bunyip or will it find them? Bunyips are popular subjects with a lot of readers and The Bunyip in the Billabong makes use of many icons of the Australian bush from billabongs to dingoes to sheep. Granddad is a quintessential teller of bush tales. Elaine Ouston tells a good story. The pace moves along smoothly, with likable characters and a warm family centred tone. The dialogue is natural and the sheep station setting well realised. I liked the way the mystery was resolved, with no fuzzy question marks over the ending. This short but fully‐formed chapter book is ideal for reading aloud or for independent reading. Since the protagonist, Matthew, is eleven, it would also work for less able or less engaged older readers. ‐ Sally Olgers
