March 2017 It is 2017 and it gives us a chance to clear up some things as well as setting an ideal as to where the business sits – for all of us. I guess the best thing to come out of the usual post Christmas palaver of sales results is the fact that the Jimmy Barnes book sold over 100,000 copies; good news to us all as consumers still buy well promoted earthy stories and thanks to Jimmy for his energy. How that +100,000 copies is broken back by selling channel is only something the publisher can tell you. Our bestseller was “The Art of Frugal Hedonism”, our best result was “Food as Medicine” and the weakest was “Here Comes Mr Postmouse”. Each title had either strong media, or consumer catalogue support and therein I think is some of the change that is evident – I do wonder if all of the bookseller co-op funding is actually worth the spend given that consumers have diminishing retail allegiances. “The Art of Frugal Hedonism” had 70% of its sales via bookshops, 30% via online outlets, “Food as Medicine” was seemingly ignored by some bookshops as we only sold 57% via shops and a big sale of 43% via online outlets. We had a cash subsidy in the ABA Kids Guide for “Here Comes Mr Postmouse”, but doubt if we will be bullish again on these sort of expenses where we are not the sole global distributor as the results are not sufficient to match the outlay and publisher support. What is evident is that consumers have no problem in easily accessing books and this is both a great result for us and my biggest concern. In the final six months our sales via online businesses increased by 33% - over the same period in 2015 – I did not see that coming. Is it that the money we paid for our bookseller supported consumer advertising drifts to online instead of the supply to bookseller? I don’t know – but I am concerned. So shifting into 2017 we get a great early start with Zoe Bingley-Pullin’s book “Falling in Love with Food” being subjected to National TV exposure from Monday January 9th via Network 10 for 3 months on “Good Chef Bad Chef” https://www.goodchefbadchef.com.au/ Each recipe Zoe is cooking on these episodes are from the cookbook - and each time she cooks a recipe from it, she is holding up the book and letting people know it is available in bookstores. “Falling in Love with Food” is also Zoe’s life story – worth reading for that as well. The other free kicks come from the latest two movie releases “Red Dog – True Blue” and “Gold”. “Red Dog – True Blue” was filmed almost entirely on Tish Lees parents property in the Pilbara and the movie looks like it will be successful globally. Tish’s book is “Lonely for My Land”. “Gold” is being released in US on January 27th and is in part likely to be based on Kerry Collision’s “Indonesian
Words From The Wise Gold”. And the announcement of the next in the Blue Murder franchise; “Blue Murder; Killer Cop” The continuing story of Roger Rogerson. I only recently read his sort of memoir “The Dark Side” written a few years ago. And the block buster could be the Foxtel – Showcase 6 part series “Picnic at Hanging Rock” But the biggest will be the anticipated announcement by Midnight Oil of their 2017 plans. What I can say is that the Oils manager is the same person who manages Jimmy Barnes. As soon as the announcement is made watch the consumers come to buy the book. When the publisher agreed the print run it was with a long term view. I read a post from the Cinema Bookshop in Hobart this week about the conclusion to the Birchalls saga in Launceston – they will close this year. The business had been in the Tilley family for 50 years and we see another Icon depart. Back in history I recall visiting Norm Snr when he was MD of the store to explain our shift to a rebate based trading system almost 40 years ago at Collins; and then the progression of a family running a business. The landmark store will be missed. It reminds me of the changed status of bookselling in Launceston and that we now only have two outlets in the town Petrarch’s and Collins Bookshop. No more Mary Fisher, no A&R, no educational booksellers – just two stores for our face to consumers. I then read the exciting news of having a bookshop going back into Columbus Circle opposite Central Pak on the West side of Manhattan Island. I did enjoy my visits to this retail centre over the years – browse the bookshop and then down to Whole Foods for lunch. If I was walking down Amsterdam I could not visit the other major bookseller a few streets away from Columbus Circle for a slightly better range. Now the facts that since Borders closed and B&N have had cut backs there has been no bookshop in this vibrant area. Fact is Amazon are now going to be the bookseller in the Columbus Circle retail area. Books are now visible again. So what happens next? I read that Macy’s are shutting 68 stores across US and dropping about 6000 staff. I / we don’t control outcomes we can only survive by judging how to be part of the constant evolution of how to capture the consumer. Good luck I am sad to close by mentioning the passing of Simon Milne this week. He was a high calibre individual who was the friend of many. My thoughts are extended to his family. Farewell Simon. Battle the books and the heat! DJ

MICK THOMAS: These Are the Days is the autobiographical tale of an inspired and uniquely Australian creative force. It all starts with the songs: how they got written, where and why they got written, and why they still get played. And it's about the people ‐ in the various line‐ups of the various bands, the people in the studio, and in the audience at the countless shows. And it's about when Weddings, Parties, Anything first called it a day back in 1998 and Mick quickly realizing there was no good night to go into. What we are thankfully left then is the simple recognition there are always songs that need to be written, shows that need to be played and stories that need to be told. Yes, it's about the stories. The book comprises 31 chapters, each of which is a Mick Thomas song title. Each chapter includes a short story about the song and the chord chart for the song. Publicity The book is to be launched at the Port Fairy music Festival to be followed by a National music/ book tour. Mick is regularly interviewed/ plays his original songs on ABC radio nationally. He has a strong and loyal fan base and the book will be widely reviewed in mainstream and music media. Mushroom Records is releasing a companion album to the book on Liberation Music and their publicity machine will be promoting the album and book together
Author Information Mick Thomas is an Australian music legend! Mick was born in the Latrobe Valley and spent his childhood travelling Victoria with an itinerant SEC family. By his early twenties he was living in Melbourne playing in bands ultimately forming the Weddings, Parties Anything group which disbanded in 1998. He is currently defying gravity with Squeezebox Wally and the Roving Commission and when not lugging his sorry arse down the highway is a card carrying member of the Old Fathers of Northcote Society. Like most guitarists his age he is looking for a lighter amplifier.

So many places to visit, so many delicious things to eat. Where to start, in a strange, new city? These nifty guides take visitors through the potentially bewildering process of finding authentic eats, across a variety of destinations. With a focus on what to eat, as much as where to eat, IN 12 DISHES will appeal to food‐centric travellers who desire meaningful dining experiences across the gamut. The core assumption is that travellers want to plunge headfirst into local staples ‐ iconic dishes that define a place. They want pad thai in Bangkok, bun cha in Hanoi, pao mo in Xi'an, shojin ryori in Kyoto and assam laksa in Penang. But...where to find the best? Highlighting12 must‐eat dishes, with meaty information on where to find them, there's more than enough to give travellers the food heads‐up. Depending on the city, there will also be features on cooking schools, regional restaurants, great cafes, food markets, day trips, walking tours and local eating etiquette. Gorgeously photographed and written in a snappy, engaging style, IN 12 DISHES is the indispensable guide for food‐ obsessed travellers. SHANGHAI Dazzling modernity. Enduring customs. Futuristic architecture. Art deco edifices. Cutting-edge couture. Traditional Chinese values. Ramshackle back streets. Blingy retail. Pre-dawn tai-chi. All night night-life. Michelin-starred chefs. Centuries-old food-ways. If one city has it all, it’s Shanghai, the engine-room of China’s super-star economy. Walk just a few blocks and you’ll see everything from chi-chi young things shopping for the latest designer threads, to streetfood vendors hawking rustic fare from humble mobile carts. Shanghai is exhilarating, dynamic and endlessly fascinating. But, when you’re hungry, where do you start in a city with so much on its menu? Let SHANGHAI IN 12 DISHES be your essential dining primer, profiling twelve essential dishes, and a raft of places to find them. Plus, you’ll get the heads-up on some world-class cafes, a day-trip itinerary, how to graze through iconic food streets, the low-down on the legandary hairy crab and much more besides. There’s even a recipe or two. Welcome to eating like a local, Shanghai style! Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

The book that everyone should read. This could save your life! Dr Warrick Bishop is an experienced cardiologist with extensive training and expertise in the area of CT coronary angiography. His very proactive approach to cardiac health has been an integral part of his methodology... very focussed on 'best care' for individual patients as he takes an holistic approach to patient management. ‐ Alistair Begg, cardiologist, Adelaide To say that cardiac CT scanning has been a life saving experience for me is an understatement. If I had continued to put my head in the sand and not gone ahead with the scan, who knows what may have happened. I am not out of the woods by any stretch but am now more aware that if I experience any symptoms of heart attack, I need to act on them quickly. It could be the difference between life and death. I am extremely glad and very fortunate that this testing was available for my husband and me, and I extend my thanks to Dr Bishop for his encouragement and belief in this procedure. ‐ Caroline Harding, patient, Hobart
Author Information Warrick Bishop is a practising cardiologist with an interest in cardiovascular disease prevention and a special interest in cardiac CT imaging, lipid management and eating guidelines. He graduated from the University of Tasmania, School of Medicine, in 1988. He worked in the Northern Territory and subsequently commenced his specialist training in Adelaide, South Australia. He completed his advanced training in cardiology in Hobart, Tasmania, becoming a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 1997. He has worked predominately in private practice, combined with public sessions. In 2009 Warrick undertook training in CT Cardiac Coronary Angiography, being the first cardiologist in Tasmania with this specialist recognition. This area of imaging fits well with his interest in preventative cardiology. He holds level B certification with the Australian Joint Committee for CCTA and is a member of the Society of Cardiac Computed Tomography. Warrick is also a member of the Australian Atherosclerosis Society and a participant on the panel of ‘interested parties’ developing a model of care and national registry for familial hypercholesterolaemia. He has also developed a particular interest in diabetic-related risk of coronary artery disease, specifically related to eating guidelines and lipid profiles. Warrick is an accredited examiner for the Royal Australian College of Physicians and is regularly involved with teaching medical students and junior doctors. He has worked with Hobart’s Menzies Institute for Medical Research on projects in an affiliate capacity and is recognised by the Medical School of the University of Tasmania with academic status. For more than a year, Warrick has been a member of the Clinical Issues Committee of the Australian Heart Foundation, providing input into issues of significance for the management of heart patients. In his free time, Warrick enjoys travel and music with his wife, and he surfs and plays guitar with his children. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

This is an account of the 'discovery', exploration, pacification and development of the Eastern, Western and Southern Highlands, Simbu and Enga Provinces of Papua New Guinea, from their beginnings to independence in September 1975 ‐ the colonial era. New Guinea was the last of the great land masses of the world to be 'discovered' and explored by Europeans. But this is a European conceit, for Indonesians and Asians knew of the existence of New Guinea, and had visited its shores long before the first Europeans sighted the island in 1512. However, this is a history of the colonial period. A lot of fresh research into PNG Highlands history has been conducted in recent decades, by the author and a great many others, Sinclair has endeavoured to bring as much as possible of it together in a very detailed book, which goes far beyond sagas of exploration. It documents the growth and development through administration, industry and all that is associated with the establishment of a growing infrastructure. The author personally knew many of the great figures in Highlands exploration, notable Mick and Dan Leahy (he also new Jim and Paddy), Jim Taylor, and Ivan and Claude Champion. They have all passed on, but not before telling Jim Sinclair their stories of 'discovery'. AVAILABLE NOW
Author Information James Sinclair; retiring from the PNG administration after nearly 30 years, he settled back to become one of the world’s leading PNG historians, and author of over 30 books covering Papua new Guinea. He was awarded the Companion of the Order of the Star of Melanesia; an honorary Doctor of letters by the Australian National University, and an OBE for ‘services to the State and to literature’.

At the age of 65 Gordon Lewis was described by an enraged senior judge as a 'bloody maverick!' He took comfort from this assessment as he felt it confirmed that he was on the right track... Gordon Lewis loves the humanity of the Law. That affection has led him to a legal career of great diversity. Whether as Director of the Victorian Law Institute, sitting as a County Court Judge, regular presentations on radio, guest speaker at both overseas and Australian conferences, or his role as Cricket Australia's Senior Code of Conduct Commissioner, his name has become almost as well known to the general public as it is to the legal profession. Known for his warmth, compassion and quick wit, he has devoted many years to assisting and advising young lawyers. The textbook he originally co‐authored with Justice Kyrou, Handy Hints on Legal Practice, was once described as the only legal textbook to ever make the readers laugh. Several years ago he decided to write 'a funny book about the law and his life so far'. This book is the result. Whether it is the law stripped of its pomposity, cricket, film reviewing, greyhounds or just coping with life's exigencies, the self‐deprecatory humour in these pages gives a rare insight into the author's kindness and sense of fun. You might also think that apart from writing 'a funny book', almost coincidentally the author has recorded a testament to overcoming personal adversity.

Growing for Broke describes how obsession with economic growth comes at a cost to both the environment and the economy. To generate strong economic growth in Australia, the government has doubled the migration rate in the last ten years. The downside of this policy is that increased population requires increased infrastructure. To fund infrastructure spending of the recent past, governments have sold most of the public assets the community once owned. Utilities companies, tollways, houses, land, farms, public buildings, airports and seaports have been auctioned off to private companies, many of them foreign owned. With little now left to sell other than the very land on which the nation is built, to finance the infrastructure bill for the ever‐expanding population, governments are sinking deeper into debt. We need to re‐evaluate our slavish commitment to economic and population growth. We need to consider a new, more sustainable, economic paradigm. This book suggests how.

Tasmania's rise and rise as a tourist destination makes the island an ideal location for the cashed-up international polo set, jetting in from Europe, Buenos Aires, Shanghai and LA for their late summer carnival and relaxathon in the world's latest clean-green hotspot. They play fiercely and party hard at the swish Polo Palace, built near beautiful beaches through the largesse of an island-loving, polo-mad billionaire Bahraini businessman. So when this idyll is gruesomely interrupted by the murder of Sebastian Wicken, a dashing and wealthy Englishman famous for wielding his stick and ball, Pufferfish, aka seasoned Detective Inspector Franz Heineken of the Tasmanian Police Force, is called to investigate. And investigate he does. Pufferfish and his offsiders Rafe and Faye, work double time to try and fathom who did what to whom, and why - while keeping an antsy tourist industry at bay - but then the strange intrusion of a quavery voice from rural England, being Sebastian's aunt Eugenie, deepens the mystery. Meanwhile Faye, against advice, has got herself personally involved in the theft of a stamp album from a workingclass primary school. Silly kids and all that. Except it's no ordinary stamp album, sucking in and mightily distracting Pufferfish from the politically-charged polo mess. As if all of this is not enough, an old Pufferfish flame, diminutive beauty Milly de Havilland cruises back into town from his distant past, when she'd given great comfort to the then young Dutch throwaway cop Franz Heineken, an emotional wreck washed up on remote Tasmania's shore. And, as it happens, Pufferfish's close de facto Hedda is currently overseas...

Flame Tip is a slim collection of short fictions that explore different realities and perceptions arising from the Tasmanian Black Tuesday bushfires of 1967. The pieces in this collection are as diverse in subject matter (infidelity, love, suicide) as they are in length. Despite the horror of one day of infernal terror., these stories reveal nuances of character and place through resilience, empathy, honesty and humour. February 2017 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Tasmanian Black Tuesday bush fires. Flame Tip will resonate with Australians, fire being elemental in our consciousness, and with Tasmanians in particular who may recognise themselves and their surroundings within the lines of fiction. There is also a universality to the pieces that should appeal to a wider audience. David Walsh, the controversial and high‐profile owner of MONA, has written the foreword and will help to promote the book. It would sell well in Australian souvenir and gift shops as well as bookstores.
Author Information Karenlee Thompson is a writer of fiction and non‐fiction, who is passionate about reading and writing the Australian voice. Harry Tremayne, a policeman, goes to an isolated valley in the remote Murchison region of Western Australia to find his brother ‐ who vanished a month earlier while investigating the murder of a police detective. Do the gold smugglers at Breakaway House hold the answers to the mystery? First published as a serial in the Perth Daily News in 1932, the real setting for the book is Mt Magnet, about 150k north of Perth, deep in gold country. 'It is somewhat less intense and less effective than the books in the Bony series, but it is successful as an early effort of Upfield's treatment of the Australian outback.' ‐ Ray Browne, The Spirit of Australia

Arthur Roberts was a schoolmaster in country NSW (1861 to 1894) and it was education and the changing educational system that shaped his life. Born in the hop‐growing region of Kent, England, his life and prospects were transformed by a wave of educational reform that carried him far from family, class and country. Roberts found himself on the frontier of attempts to establish a national school system in Australia. With a swiftly growing family ‐ one with a severe disability ‐ he was moved from one struggling district to another, fighting insolvency, ignorance, natural disaster and bitter sectarian divides. His letters requesting schoolroom furniture, upgrades to buildings and teaching assistants give some insight into his plight. Photographs and family folklore reveal a taciturn, deeply flawed man while the evidence of writings (as Scone correspondent for The Maitland Mercury) suggests a fiery intelligence and defiant pride. This is amplified by a portrait of Roberts in Havelock Ellis' autobiographical novel, Kanga Creek. The schoolmaster, Mr Williams, is portrayed as an educated and passionate agnostic who uses the pen name Anti‐Humbug when writing letters to The Stockwhip, a journal possibly modeled on publications like The Bulletin. This narrative presents these contradictions and hopefully gives the reader some sense of this teacher's journey.

Thirteen tales from the pen of Fairlie Kingston, offering an artist's view on memories of childhood loss and wonder, a world of radiograms, Capstan cigarettes and money trees, drifting through a bad caravan of holidays, liver brick flats and matinee pictures at the Wintergarden cinema. Set in familiar suburbs of Sydney's yesteryear, this is a cat and dog world where there is a whiff of boiled cabbage, dusty hall runners and the scorecards of domestic enmity. There is a strange and familiar intimacy in these pieces that seldom fails to charm the reader. The stories are accompanied by work from the author's brother, Peter Kingston, who has drawn vignettes and moody colour pieces for each.Ceramic artist Fairlie Kingston was born in Sydney. She uses clay to create models of pre war iconic public buildings in three dimensions, as well as landscapes and urban scenes on clay tiles. She describes herself as a "narrative ceramicist". Both Fairlie and Peter Kingston are represented by Australian Galleries. AVAILABLE NOW

Meanwhile, the Oak is more impressive with every reading. We're drawn into an ecology where people really do give a damn about each other and the world their friends, lovers, children and animals inhabit. Utah and Arizonan deserts never seemed so sparkling. Australian forests, kitchens and bedrooms ('Give me a broom or give me death!') are charged with memorable arguments and eroticism. How clever, how good, her writing is. Taylor Johnson's poems expand our knowledge while they increase our delight. Read this book! - Michael Sharkey AVAILABLE NOW

George Hutchinson grew up in western Sydney, Australia in the 1930s and 1940s ‐ a time of great local and global change. George's boyhood was marked by the legacy of the Great Depression, and later by the Pacific Front of World War II. But it was also a time when the wireless radio and the local picture theatre were still new and wondrous forms of entertainment. When boys passed the time by making stagecoaches out of prams and picking blackberries on undeveloped land. When the Parramatta River was a source of inspiration and homemade boating ingenuity. In this book, George takes us back to the first fifteen years of his life, to reflect on those formative years and share a personal view of a world and a way of life that is now history.
Author Information
George Hutchinson was born in 1930. He was educated at various schools in the western suburbs of Sydney. He left school at age fifteen and after several years of employment, completed an Arts Degree at Sydney University in 1966 and a Diploma in Education in 1967. He was a staff high school teacher for seven years before becoming a full-time playwright. George's previous publications include No Room For Dreamers, which was declared by the London Sunday Telegraph as the best fringe play of the 1980 Edinburgh Festival. In 1983, No Room For Dreamers was included on the NSW HSC Reading List. The second play of his trilogy about Australian idealists, The Ballad Of Billy Lane, was also performed overseas, as well as in Australia. The third play of his trilogy, Henry and Peter and Henry and Me, was originally workshopped at the International Playwrights' Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center, Connecticut, USA in 1984. The style of narration George has chosen for The Best Years of Your Life is suited to the era and reflects his deep and abiding love of Australian history. This book and all his previous works are evidence of this. George is semi-retired and continues to live with his wife in the Sutherland Shire.

This book represents a ten year journey, a journey that began with a gift of a rusty old screen printer and allowed us to stop working shitty jobs and instead print a few tees for our friends hardcore bands, a journey that has seen us stocked in retailers around the world and establish ourselves as a real presence in the fashion, surfing and streetwear industries. It has seen us evolving our brand into more of an environmentally sustainable business and helping to bring hemp into mainstream fashion. It is a journey you are a part of ‐ you allowed us to get where we are and shaped our brand right along with us. You gave us the support we needed to keep growing and evolving. So this is your journey as much as ours.

This cookbook is a live letter to the state of Victoria. With the valuable support of over 80 top chefs, cooks, restaurants, producers and other food folk sharing their recipes and stories of farm to plate, this book captures a snapshot of the food industry as it is right now; a celebration of excellence and inspiration. Forage has criss‐crossed the state of Victoria on an epic 3,000 km road trip visiting the people and places that make this state's culinary scene one of the world's most diverse and exciting. Your copy of Forage has the added benefit of sharing the spoils with local charity Upside Nepal, supporting subsistence farmers to develop their own enterprises that will benefit their remote villages in Nepal. Forage is an initiative born from our time in Nepal, where we were inspired by the strong connection between the subsistence farmers, their food and the land that provides it. We want to share this land to plate connection with the Australian people, and in turn, through partnership with Australian charity Upside Nepal, support village development through agriculture enterprise in Nepal. The prof ts from Forage Victoria will be split with Upside Nepal with the aim of contributing $100K to incubating social enterprise in Nepal.

Seafood Everyday contains recipes for weeknight family meals as well as special celebration dishes ‐ with everything in between. Scenic photographs of the spectacular Tasman Peninsula area are scattered throughout the book, and Eloise counts the cover photograph of sunrise at the Tessellated Pavement at Eaglehawk Neck as one of her triumphs. "I tried to get this picture on three different occasions, and finally the conditions were just perfect and I could get the picture that I had been imagining!" said Eloise. This photograph was picked up on social media by Tourism Tasmania, Tourism Australia and local tourism associations, receiving over 80 000 'likes' on social media channels. Cheese making is a wonderful adventure and very rewarding. Much like people who wish to make their own bread, grow their own vegetables or make their own wines and beers, many cheese makers know that you cannot replace the quality of handmade cheese with the mass produced supermarket cheeses available today. There is no doubt in my mind that the cheeses I can make myself at home are far superior to the commercially produced cheese at the supermarket. Plus, I can make various boutique cheeses at home which aren't readily available at the stores. Additionally, the importance of eating foods without chemical additives, artificial colourings and preservatives is growing, as the awareness of the negative effects of these non-food additives increases. As with other foods, when you make your own cheeses you control the ingredients and can guarantee that you are eating pure, whole foods and not some man-made synthetic product that you really should not be putting into your body in the first place. While there is a specific science to cheese making, it is also and art form and craft.

The Great Bookie Robbery of 1976 is one of the most notorious armed robberies Australia has ever known. It is also one of the most mysterious in recent history, with official facts blurred together with theory and wild rumours. Just how many millions of dollars was stolen on the day? And what became of the members of the crew that pulled off the daring heist? As the son of the robbery's mastermind, Mark Lee Bennett has spent years not only researching the Great Bookie Robbery, but the history of his own family and the way his father and uncle came to be the career criminals wanted by police and rivals alike. The result is a piece of history as seen through the lives of developing criminals in the Melbourne underworld. Part true crime, part family biography and part memoir, this is the story of the Great Bookie Robbery as you've never read it before.
The Great Bookie Robbery of 1976 wasn't just one of the biggest heists in Australian history. It was also a curse. On the robbers and their families; on the law enforcement unit that sought answers; on the victims the aftermath left in its wake. Following on from the story of the Great Bookie Robbery as written by Mark Lee Bennett, the illegitimate son of career criminal Ray Chuck Bennett, this is the follow‐up of what happened to the survivors, and the families of notorious criminals now known for pulling off one of the biggest heists in Australian history. Where the Great Bookie Robbery itself is a story of criminals and record‐breaking heists, this is a story of the tragedy and bloodshed that can come as a result of crime.
This memoir from the son of notorious gunman and career criminal Ray Chuck Bennett is more than a recitation of one's lifetime. It is the journey of a man carrying a dark secret, unknown even to himself. Mirrors of Death is a tribute to the friends and family of Mark Lee Bennett that lost their lives over the years, through tragedy and bad circumstance. It's a story of one man's constant experience with death and tragedy. And it is also a glimpse at the underbelly of Victoria as seen from a man who emerged, scarred and changed forever, from the legacy of the Great Bookie Robbery.

Fergus and Delilah
220
Fergus and Delilah follows a little girl through her first day at a new park. She slides, climbs, swings and dances, making friends with a variety of different children from the unique to the kid who doesn’t speak. However, despite her best efforts, one boy keeps shooing her away. Will Delilah be able to overcome their differences and make friends with the boy who always plays alone? Fergus and Delilah shows children that everyone is ‘wired’ a little bit differently and no one should have to play alone at the park. Fergus Fergus loves spinning in the park and giving people ‘knuckles’. He likes to chase his dog around but most of all he likes to try and feed his two chickens rocks. Fergus has some particular tastes when it comes to food. He would much prefer eating cabbage and carrots than cake and croissants. Fergus’ wires are a little bit different to most people but maybe that is why he seems to know an interesting fact for almost everything!
Delilah Delilah is a smiley, inquisitive girl who loves having tea parties with her dolls, eating pink cupcakes and mushy cream cheese sandwiches. She considers herself an expert at flying kites and she is not too bad on the monkey bars either.
Author Information Miša Alexander (pronounced meesha) was born in Vancouver, Canada where she attended Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design majoring in graphic design. If you could ask Pope Francis one question, what would it be? Small children have BIG questions. Some are fun. Some are serious. And some will quietly break your heart. In Dear Pope Francis, the Pope's first book for children, he personally responds to 30 questions from children all over the world. With his optimistic heart, Pope Francis writes with an honesty that will impact every reader long after the final page is turned. Illuminating and inspiring, Dear Pope Francis is a lasting book with a universal message for children and adults. Meeting Pope Francis On Feb. 22, 2016, twelve child co-authors of the book Dear Pope Francis spent an afternoon with their co-author Pope Francis. The children came from twelve different countries, including Australia, China, Belgium, Kenya, and the United States. These children’s questions and illustrations are featured in the Pope’s first and only children’s book, along with the Pope’s personal responses. The Holy Father talked with his young guests at the Vatican. During the extraordinary visit, each of the children gave Pope Francis a gift from their homeland, including Ugg boots from Australia, maple syrup from Canada, a woven painting from India and a soccer ball from the United States. The Pope in turn greeted and blessed each child and then presented them with a copy of Dear Pope Francis as well as a “Jesus the Teacher” plush figure. It was the first time the children had seen the Pope’s response to their questions. The children also had the unique opportunity to ask Pope Francis additional questions and even sing a song for him. The impact of this once-in-a-lifetime experience for the children was poignantly expressed by Ryan from Canada, “One moment, I felt excited, but then I thought, this is probably the only time I'm ever going to meet him, so I don't want to blow this.” Clara from Ireland said that she would be friends with the kids she met on this special journey for the rest of her life. Father Antonio Spadaro, S.J., who helped facilitate and edit this unique project, offered some insight as to why the Pope immediately said “Yes” to the book and visit: “The Pope knows that when he speaks to adults, children may not listen…but when he speaks to children, then adults listen.” In this way, the children’s visit to the Vatican helped bring the world’s attention to the Pope’s desire to share a message of mercy with all people.

Around Whisker's neck hangs a tiny golden pendant ‐ a symbol of hope and a reminder of his family. Passed down from generation to generation, the golden anchor is much more than just a lucky charm. It may be Whisker's final hope of saving his parents. The thrilling sixth book in the award‐winning series
Author Information “Exciting, enthusiastic, engaging, energetic and really tall!” is how students often describe the fresh-faced Dr Cameron. Yes, Dr Cameron Stelzer is a real Doctor, not a made up one like Dr Seuss! However, with a Doctorate of Visual Arts, you won't find him hanging around a doctor's surgery (unless he accidently stabs himself with a pencil). Cameron was born in Hobart in 1977. He attended school in Adelaide before his family moved to Bundaberg, QLD. In primary school, Cameron wrote many short stories for the local newspaper. He still has a shoe box of gold certificates for his efforts. In high school Cameron discovered (with his first pair of glasses) that he had a passion for art. After attending university in Brisbane (where he did occasionally stab himself with a pencil), Cameron took his new Dr title and went to live in London. Searching for inspiration, he applied for a job at the Natural History Museum. It was here that he rekindled his love for children's literature and began writing stories inspired by the animals in the museum. When Cameron returned to Australia, he completed a graduate diploma in education and released the first instalment in his Stroogle series of picture books. Eight years later, the sixth book in the series was published and followed on from three additional how-to-draw books. In 2012 Cameron received a grant to create the first book in his new Pie Rat series. The Pie Rat series have gone on to win a number of book awards internationally. Apart from writing and illustrating stories, Cameron enjoys running and mountain biking through the beautiful Daisy Hill forest (SouthEast QLD), where he lives with his wife and three daughters.

Whisker is a cyclone-surviving circus rat with a troublesome tail and a boat load of luck. When a strange ship pulls him out of the ocean, Whisker's new life as a Pie Rat apprentice begins. Welcome aboard the good ship Apple Pie - a peculiar pastry-inspired ship where cannons shoot mouldy pies, coloured pencils are used as peg-legs and the champion swords-rat fights with two scarlet scissor swords.
Whisker is a Pie Rat apprentice with an appetite for danger and a flair for lucky escapes. He goes from one catastrophe to the next quicker than the time it takes to raise a pair of giant underpants up the mast! With the mysterious Forgotten Map in his possession, Whisker embarks on the next stage of his quest to find the missing key. Together with his friends, Ruby Rat and Hook Hand Horace, Whisker must overcome a host of jungle dangers and outsmart the deadliest enemies in his attempt to claim the key.

What do you do when someone you care about is hurting, when their behaviour is making it worse? How can you help them if you are the youngest and no‐one is listening? This book tackles the tough topic of eating disorders and how a family has to work together to help the big sister get better. Eva loves her big sister very much. Anna is clever, smart and fun. But one day Eva notices that her sister is staring to behave differently and that she seems unwell. Eva wants to help but doesn't know what to do. So she confides in her friend Jennie who helps her find a way to help her sister. A moving, yet hopeful, account of a family working together to help a loved one recover their health. AUTHOR INFORMATION Formally a primary school teacher from UK, I now live in Sydney writing for children and adults alike. My works often take a child's perspective to explain the world and to reflect on important life experiences. My poetry is aimed at general audiences and as well as working on some collaborative ventures and YA projects. I am currently developing two distinct picture book series. Firstly, 'The Elephant in the Room Series' providing a "way into" conversations with young children about difficult subjects matter dealing with family and mental health. Secondly, a series of books about characters in a fictional town I have created called 'Verityville'. The daily lives of these characters are often based on real events and people I have met through my life.
