May 2013 New Title Releases Footy Town is a collection of football yarns from around the nation; stories which celebrate footy at its most local: from New Norfolk to the Tiwi Islands, from Rockhampton to Kalgoorlie, from Edwardstown to Fitzroy, and all the way to Mangoplah Cookardinia United. Written with great love (and possible embellishment) by players, has‐beens and fans, they tell of footy clubs and the people who have made them, whether in the suburbs or the bush. They paint a vivid picture of footy’s wonderful culture; a picture of mud and dust; of Dencorub and the clack of stops; of lumpy back pockets and racehorse half‐forwards; of spiralling torps and once‐upon‐a‐time drop kicks; of savs bubbling away forever. This is footy; this is Australia’s Game. AVAILABLE LATE MARCH 2013

May 2013 New Title Releases Who knows more about the performance impact of design changes in real time than the sailor and sail trimmer in an ocean race? Performance can be most influential on design decision‐ making when the performance response to design change is experienced in real time. In architecture and design dynamic feedback is the computational and analogue design challenge of the hour – how to experience within dynamic digital and physical design models as those changes are actually happening. So, in this book, the challenge is first explored by looking beyond the design of the static built infrastructure of the city to the ultimate in reflexive action and high performance design: sailboat racing. Successful design decision‐making relies on design team interaction between individuals of very diverse expertise and points of departure: generalists and specialists. Designing the Dynamic brings together leading researchers from architecture, boat design, industrial design, mathematics, aerospace, structural engineering, and computer science to explore the design and representation of dynamic systems. The authors expose diverse aspects of the subject ranging from the empirical science and sociology to the deep poetry of designing with dynamic phenomena.

Few families build a billion‐dollar family name in one generation. Which means that somebody, generations before the family became billionaires, had a vision for their family to become super‐wealthy. Now, you may not think it is possible for your family to become one of those billion‐ dollar families. I will be honest with you, in your lifetime it is not likely. But if you are willing to think beyond your lifetime and beyond your children's lifetime, and follow the plan I lay out for you in this book, you will lead an incredible life, so will your children, and your grandchildren just might inherit a billion‐dollar name. ‐ Bernard Kelly

May 2013 New Title Releases What if the descendants of the Vikings who settled Greenland and went on to reach North America around the end of the first millennium were still there today? What if the Vikings had enjoyed a five hundred year head start on Columbus in the New World? Would the Santa Maria have arrived to the south of an eastern seaboard dotted with centuries old settlements and towns hosting devotees to Odin and Thor? What if the Vikings’ descendants had gone on to become dominant just as the United States of America has in our own world? A millennium after reaching those western lands would we still have had two world wars? What might the world look like? Where might the political and religious divides be drawn?Welcome to Norse America… Following the turn of the first millennium the Vikings are expanding beyond northern Europe by way of axe and trade. Their spreading influence and settlements, founded by warriors, farmers and merchants, can not only be found in the far flung corners of the continent, but also across the Atlantic, beyond the stepping stones of the Faroe Islands and Iceland, as they establish themselves in the newly discovered lands in the west. Growing influence brings wealth, and together they fire contests of power, as the Viking Age of adventuring free spirits gives way to a world of newly rising kings. At the same time a strengthening tide of missionaries proclaiming an alien faith can be found in the Norse homelands. The agents of the White Christ, often in alliance with the new monarchs, have opened divisions between themselves and those who still revere the old ways. Such tensions lead to bloodshed and war, yet the new powers are ascendant. In this time of turmoil a young man has a vision. Eskil, orphaned in war, but now a man, has led his followers to found a settlement in the west dedicated to Odin and Asgard’s gods. There he will build a new realm, and after tests, adventures and trials, he will leave a legacy that will grow to be the strongest nation the world has ever seen.

One Perfect Day is the profoundly moving story of Veronika Csosz, her experiences during the 1956 Hungarian Uprising and her traumatic escape. Veronika’s story is also about young people with an unshakeable desire to be free of the fear, violence and oppression of Communist rule which, on a beautiful autumn day, led to the tragic events of 1956. Despite calls for help to the leaders of the free world, Hungary’s fight for freedom was overshadowed by the international stand over the Suez Canal. Help never came, and the desperate fight for democracy was crushed by the Soviet Army just days after freedom seemed to be won… AVAILABLE NOW

History Sid Harta Publishers
William Duke of Normandy conquers England in 1066. Jews follow him, arriving as traders. They have financial expertise and money‐lending capabilities that are much needed in the medieval economy. A few have become among the wealthiest in the land. Yet medieval Jews have a unique status; they are owned by the King. This ultimately proves their downfall as they are consistently and savagely taxed. After two hundred years, anti‐Jewish feeling — bolstered from Rome — is growing in intensity. The pious and prejudiced Edward I has passed a law forbidding Jewish money‐lending. Italian financiers operating in England now provide him with money at interest. The value of his Jews is rapidly diminishing.

About the Author Henry Van Zanden, the son of Dutch migrants, is an Australian author. In 1997, Van Zanden released his first book, 1606 Discovery of Australia. The success of this book encouraged Van Zanden to produce a six part series, Australia Discovered. This led him to undertake a number of exploratory expeditions to Western Australia and Victoria after he became aware of the existence of Dutch sailors who became marooned on Australian shores. Mr Van Zanden has revealed the stories behind the discoveries, shipwrecks and exploratory voyages made by the Dutch between 1606 and the 18th century.

The story of The Lost White Tribes of Australia by Henry Van Zanden confirms longstanding rumours, never previously proven true, that a community of Dutch‐descended people was found ... in the early 19th century. The community was living proof that foreigners had occupied the continent long before the British and if its existence became known the UK’s claim to sovereignty could be threatened. So it was kept a secret and has remained so to this day.

Maurice Edward Larsen

When Shirley Larsen woke one winter's night in June 1984, in excruciating pain from an egg‐sized swelling on her right wrist, little did she know what fate had in store. Diagnosed later with rheumatoid arthritis, complications of which would rapidly destroy her lung tissue, she faced certain death. This is the remarkable story of an ordinary Australian family's struggle to save the life of a beloved wife and mother, against seemingly overwhelming odds, and with no cure available in Australia. With only weeks to live, it soon becomes a desperate crisade that eventually transports Shirley, critically ill and attached to an oxygen cylinder, to England, culminating in a dramatically successful heart and lungs transplant in a Londaon hospital. We are taken perceptively into the patient's and the physicians' challenging world of organ transplantation with its opposing and overwhelming emotions of uplifting elation and traumatic heartache. Revealed in the text are the obfuscations of an ineffective government hierarchy unwilling to acknowledge the rights of two of its citizens and an equally convoluted bureaucracy. Refreshingly, the overwhelming support of the trade union movement both in Australia and in Britain brings its own heart‐warming consolation. Shirley Larsen's extraordinary story will give hope to those critically ill Australians who are desperately waiting for the chance to live a healthy life by having an organ transplant. It should also arouse in others the noblest of human instincts - altruisn - by becoming organ donors.

This is the Nola Ablett story, straight from the horse's mouth. It was a sad and lonely life for me. Even though we weren't a small family, every day seemed like a week. I don't remember ever owning a toothbrush. Not too many people knew we existed. It was our little hideaway in the country. I always loved that song 'Let the Rest of the World Go By', but those days ended when a couple of the Ablett boys 'sussed' us all out. My sister, Colleen ended up marrying Alfred and, unfortunately, I ended up with his brother, the greatest 'no hoper' of all time. Nanette got off scot free. To live with them you were their slave; in other words, we had to be the hot water bottle, and chief cook and bottle wahers. If we moved and we were warm, that's all that mattered. In their minds it was all about me, me, me, as mumma and father found out later, especially the night Alfred walltxed mumma out the dance hall door in front of old Stanley and back to our house and into the 'bridal suite'. While my father and we three kids searched the town for her, sahe was home in bed all the time. My father would never have forgotten that night. We were sent on a wild goose chase and soon after that night she said to me and only me, 'I'm expectin.'

May 2013 New Title Releases Eve Hillary was transplanted as a teenager, from her native America, to Australia, and in a few short years, she was catapulted from her career in healthcare into a glamorous career as a fashion model. But it was her marriage to Bill, a successful businessman and yachtsman that launched her into the glittering social set of the international yacht racing fraternity. For a while, they enjoyed an affluent lifestyle that included multiple homes, a yacht and an outback cattle ranch the size of a small country. After Bill relocated the family to the outback property, he was often away on business trips, leaving Eve alone at the isolated homestead with their two children. There, she discovered the dark and dangerous side of the outback when she had to protect her children from armed intruders — but when she and her sons were poisoned, their lives began to unravel. To save her family, Eve had to sacrifice almost everything and undertake a complete personal transformation. Against all odds, she took on the medical and regulatory establishment and then went on to help spearhead the wellness movement. Her true story carries a powerful message about environmental health, safe consumer choices, and shows how to achieve wellness and maintain balance in a toxic world. AVAILABLE NOW

REVIEW - READING TIME Vol 57 No. 1 February 2013 This is James Laidler’s second book for young adults, his first being the charming yet tough novel, The Taste of Apple. This new novel moves further into the teenage years, to those years nearing twenty, when life is becoming more complex, more romantic, and more challenging. The novel cleverly interleaves a number of stories set in the town of Warrnambool with short chapters from varying points of view. Mainly, though, we follow the lives of Maxine and Charlie. Maxine is a girl from a wealthy background, and she is a rebel. She has left home, gone surfing, and found a job in an abattoir. Charlie on the other hand still lives at home. He works in a psychiatric ward of a local hospital while helping his father look after Frank, the dribbling, farting, swearing, wheelchair bound grandfather. Roger, Charlie’s father, is the other main character in the novel. He manages to hover there in many of the scenes, a slightly puzzling presence, sometimes short tempered with his son, sometimes perfectly wise, and always a little fuzzy round the edges. One of the pleasures of this novel is the way it details working life at the abattoir and in the psychiatric ward. James Laidler has an eye for detail and a commitment to truthfulness (authenticity?). There is a romantic plot, stories of family difficulties for both Maxine and Charlie, and alongside these a strangely undeveloped serial-killer thread. This is a curious novel, difficult to categorise, but at its core it is a novel with a big heart, and two characters we are interested in and come to care deeply about. This is one for boys, and most definitely for girls too. The moments of sardonic humor give the book, I think, a distinct Australian edginess in the now global YA fiction world. Highly recommended for readers 14 to 17, and 35 - 65. KB

REVIEW - Magpies Volume 28, March 2013 A young Eskimo boy is keen to know what life has in store for him; if he will achieve his dream of becoming a great hunter. He also would like to know what's on the other side of the Great Ice Lake. He turns to the animals of the north asking first an arctic hare then an arctic fox, an owl who directs him to a whale who knows how to look into our hearts, where everything is written. The whale takes him to an island in the middlle of the lake where he meets Death in the form of a great white moose. Built on a repetitve folktale-like structure, the boy frames his questions the same way for each animal: Tell me, Hare, with your big ears.... Tell me, Owl, you who can see everything from up high... Finally it is death who answers both his questions, if a little enigmatically. Quarello depicts the northern lands in shades of icy blue and white - the illustration of Death's island is particularly chilling, if beautiful. The boy has a universal look to him, his faithful dog is similarly representative of its kind thereby making the tale one of everyman in the growth towards adulthood and the acceotance that one's future lies in one's own hands. There is much to thank about in this tale translated from the original French publication. - Rayma Turton
