May 2017 Erratum I mentioned in a previous newsletter about the closure of Booktique in Merimbula - I was wrong. What in fact happened was that the founding owner bought the business back. My information came from the last owner and I apologise for my error. Good luck with the "new" Booktique. The newsletter was December 2016 and my notes were written some months prior. And then I was contacted by The Overflow from Campbelltown in Tasmania. They also share sadness with the demise of Birchalls, however they are part of The Book Cellar and are going to increase their range and offering: see you next time on the drive from Launceston to Hobart. I can't not mention the closure of the corporate Angus & Robertson Book Retailing Pty Ltd stores in Queensland in the last week or so. Consumers read. Books are reading. Content is abundant. Data feeds prevail. In a way we have never been better equipped to be competitive. And then comes costs which can be so high in shopping malls. I have just read Len Riggio's (Barnes & Noble CEO and chairman) latest offering on falling sales, falling share price and the decline of foot traffic in Shopping Malls in the US. He says there is no silver bullet. B&N have 634 stores and third quarter sales of USD $1.3 b - a drop of 8% on previous year - and that was the sort of Christmas they had. We are not alone. Most recently I was on a road trip which included a visit to the IAD Press in Alice Springs to meet their publisher Bill Palmer - that Sunday I went for a drive around the West MacDonnell ranges. Like all drivers I had to refuel the car and I chose the Hermmansburg Mission as that point. Hermannsburg is an Aboriginal Mission and the birthplace of Albert Namatjira . It also has the dearest fuel I have purchased in Australia for many years. Normal unleaded fuel is $1.90 per litre for the inhabitants at this Australian town. Back down the road in Alice Springs (120 kilometres away) you pay about $1.30 per litre. Commercially acceptable or gouging? Anyway the store at the Hermmansburg Mission keeps the fuel bowser under lock and key (either theft issues or petrol sniffing?). The new store owners are a family from Chile who had relocated from somewhere in Australia and it was their second day running the store and fuel outlet. Would you call yourself an unlucky Australian if you were mauled by pricing like that? If you ever get the chance you should take the flight into Alice and south to Adelaide and get the window seat - it is like travelling over dreamland with the rugged aged floor of

Words from the Wise Australia a coloured twisted beauty from millions of years ago. As I commented at one of my meetings the land toward the West Macdonnell Ranges has a lot of similarity with parts of Arizona where the Hopi and Navajo Indians lived. You can't stream this experience: just go there. And yes there is still a bookshop in Alice Springs - Red Kangaroo Books. And unlike the hotel I stayed at they do make a feature of being Australian with featured Australian books. The hotel I stayed at was imbued with overseas visitors and non local cuisines and wines. I suppose if you come from Germany or America you need to be fed Thai food and drink French Wines? Maybe? The hotel was part of an overseas chain. I have started reading Desert Column - The Ion Idriess work that has been OP since last century; having never read it previously. This edition has a forward by Ross Couthart to give it a modern accolade. I will let you know more when I finish reading the PDF. By the way we have more Idriess titles coming from ETT in the first half of 2017. I have to say sales have been tepid - relaxed (any word other than saying they are down) over the last weeks and wonder if this is simply title based or is the long winter of slow demand approaching early. The cover of this months new title list uses the tag line "Absolutely Classic Australian Publishing" and we will be using this across most of the ETT titles this year as the publisher Tom Thompson has a stellar year ahead. Also April 1st will see our distribution for Smudge Publishing return to us after about a 5 year absence - thank you to Jonette and Danielle at Smudge. An almost final word of Titlepage - at this stage we do not see that our business can make an economic case to undertake this listing option. It really revolves around the problem of being a distributor for so many book publishers - whether they are one book or one hundred books - we have a lot. As I say constantly you can enjoy our daily in stock feed regardless of who you are and it is free and what drives a huge amount of consumer satisfaction. Busy month upcoming with conferences, visit of Ian Roberts from Gardners and New Zealand as well. Read plenty. DJ From the snap album - firstly Abbeys in Sydney and then Readings Kids shop

It'd been a long time since I claimed some solitude in this blessed landscape; since I've done without lifes little props. Here I have no friend, no dog, no radio, no clock, no phone, no roof, no body pollutants. The clackety‐clack of the typewriter travels out into the valley and gets lost in expanded of forest and paperbark swamp. I'm the only soul around. 'One hundred years after the charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba in October 1917... The Desert Column is based on the diaries that he kept through out the war. Published in 1932, it is one of Idriess' earliest works. Harry Chauvel noted in the foreword that it was the only book of the campaign that to his knowledge was "viewed entirely from the private soldier's point of view"... Idriess served as a sniper with the 5th Australian Light Horse. Enlisting in 1914, he began his diary "as we crowded the decks off Gallipoli" and he continued writing until returning to Australia... The diaries cover his experience of some of the war's major events from life in the trenches at Gallipoli to the battles at Romani and Beersheba. One of Idriess' strengths as a writer is his ability to place the reader at the scene of the action... The diaries reveal a keenness of observation and a descriptive and pacey style that Idriess would develop further in The Desert Column.' ‐ The Australian War Memorial

Why is it that despite overwhelming evidence and fundamental science, some people still don't accept that climate change is real and that human activity is contributing to it? Is it because the science is not being understood? Is it because it is difficult to accept that humans are capable of changing the climate? Is there a link between climate change scepticism and ideology? Is there a link between the belief in the science and belief in God? If you know anyone who challenges the science of climate change ‐ or completely denies it's happening at all ‐ then this book is for you, and for them. Don't worry, your friend is human after all, and such behaviour can be explained. A Climate for Denial gives a summary of the reasons your friend is a sceptic.

Most of us today feel overwhelmed with increasing workloads and responsibility-at home, as well as work. More and more high achievers (leaders, executives, and business owners) are surviving rather than thriving, struggling to manage the boundaries between our professional and personal lives. To make matters worse, we lack perspective to see how to make changes to do anything better. Work-life balance in the 21st century is a myth. Work is part of life, not something we balance. Instead, we must learn to integrate our two separate worlds. We must learn to lead ourselves before we lead anybody else. The strategies and stories contained within will inspire you to take responsibility for your own health, define what you really want out of life, and work towards your goals. In three key stages, you will learn to: 1. develop a healthy foundation of self-respect 2. prioritise your self-care 3. implement achievable self-management strategies. It is possible to pursue your passion, achieve extraordinary success and build a great lifestyle. This book will show you how.

'It was Clara. My name is Chava now.' 'Forgive me, Chava, ' said Gesia. 'But you know, I would never have taken you for a Zionist. Such a staunch one, in any case, to want to give up your name.' Three Russian-Jewish women are flung from their homes in the Ukraine and Bessarabia - the 'wild west' of the tsarist empire - by pogrom and revolution. In 1922 Clara goes to Palestine where she joins the legendary G'dud Ha'Avodah or Labour Battalion, the roving collective initially formed to build roads connecting the growing Jewish settlements. But she soon becomes uneasy about Jewish settlers taking work from Arabs and usurping their land. As the schism widens between socialist and more conservative Zionists, Chava's abiding sense of justice has potentially lethal consequences. Clara's younger sister Manya migrates to the relative safety of Omaha in the American Midwest, reinventing herself as Marion for better assimilation. Despite escaping mounting antisemitism in Europe Marion feels isolated on the prairie, eventually finding her way to New York, an acting career and a life of ease compared to the hardships of Palestine. Zippora, Chava and Marion's niece, is a committed Zionist who hides from the Soviet secret police in a Ukranian forest and, in frequent letters, begs her dear Doda Clara to help her get to Palestine. Once there, Zipporah is dismayed by Chava's disillusionment with Zionism, her ardent belief in a future Jewish state remaining undiminished. Thus Clara, Manya and Zipporah form three sides of a triangle - the doomed revolutionary, the American immigrant, and the committed Israeli - three very different yet equally influential perspectives on the creation of present-day Israel. Sara Dowse's As the Lonely Fly is an epic story of persecution, migration and dispersal during tumultuous events in the 20th Century, which shines a light on the intertwined fates of Jews and Palestinians - a scenario with deep contemporary resonance. An urgent and moving novel from one of this country's most gifted storytellers. Author Information Sarah Dowse is a prize winning writing of novels, stories, essays and journalism. Her first novel, West Block, was based on her experience in the 1970s as the head of the Office of Women's Affairs under Prime Ministers Whitlam and Fraser. Four other novels followed. On moving to Canada in 1998, Sarah added visual arts to her repertoire. Her artwork was displayed and sold , in and around Victoria, British Columbia, where she designed and edited the anthology Reading the Peninsula, a collection of writings set in the Saanich Peninsula. Since her return to Australia in 2004 she has exhibited in group shows at the Manly Art Gallery and Museum, The Left Hand Gallery in Braidwood and the Red Olive Artspace in Balgowlah. Available Now Radar Gunner is the autobiography of Dick Dakeyne who served as a gunner and radar countermeasures operator flying over Japanese enemy territory during World War Two. Born and raised in Sydney, Dick survived 48 missions and 500 hours flying with US Army Air Force bomb squadrons based at Fenton airstrip 140 kilometres south of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. Dick's account describes living with the Americans and flying in B‐24 Liberator long‐range heavy bombers, on record‐ breaking missions lasting up to 16 hours. Death surrounded him, with the loss of fellow servicemen from Japanese ack‐ack (anti‐aircraft) guns, machine gun fire from enemy planes, and bombing raids on northern Australia. Aircraft were lost from the hazards of flying vast distances over empty oceans, through tropical storms and into massive weather fronts. For his military service and bravery, Dick was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The United States also offered him one of their highest awards, the Medal of Freedom. However, the Australian Government's policy at the time barred Australians from receiving this American award, and on Dick's behalf, refused acceptance. Winner of the 2015 Chief Minister's Book of the Year Award This is simply a great new book, beautifully produced and presented. In 1942 Dick Dakeyne joined the ultra top-secret unit Section 22 (so named because it was run from Room 22 of General MacArthur's Brisbane Headquarters). Little has ever been written about this unit - Dick was trained to operate highly classified radar detection equipment installed on just a handful of aircraft. During regular bombing raids, his mission was to map out Japanese radar installations over enemy territory. His secondary mission was to operate a 50 calibre waist gun position in an American B-24 bomber. Dick spent the war as a lone Australian embedded with American bomber crews of the 380th Bomb Group operating from northern Australia. This is a hugely interesting book illustrated by Dick's wartime photo collection - including some incredible shots taken during combat missions.

Petra White's poetry is distinctive for its sharp and unusual imagery, its authoritative expressions of the inner life and its existential preparedness and irony. Mythic imagination and narrative are at the heart of this book, her fourth collection. The ancient Book of Ezekiel is the unlikely source for a compact epic, "How the Temple was Built". Playful in its invention, this poem is terrifying and poignant. The Bible account is reinvented through a secular lens, touching on familiar concerns: war, displacement and feminism. The old epic tropes ‐ love, death, faith, despair ‐ drive this story. White's myth‐making here explores the limits of being human and the limits of being a god. The second section, "Landscapes" is thirteen sketches of human solitariness, featuring ancient mythic figures and anonymous modern ones. Unobtrusively presented landscapes, at times hyper‐real, or shading to dream, interpolate the characters. These incursions into psyche are fluid and metamorphic. Each singular poem crackles with impulse, marking iconic stillness and strange beauty. Reading for a Quiet Morning, which also includes several spirited versions of Rilke, is Petra White's most daring collection to date.

Author Information Petra White was born in Adelaide in 1975 and has lived since 1998 in Melbourne where she works as a policy adviser. Her previous poetry books are A Hunger (2013), The Simplified World (2010) and The Incoming Tide (2007), all published by John Leonard Press.

Beginning with the idea of poetry as one code among many, this collection explores the notion of applying patterns derived from mathematics to the conception and creation of poems. There is a peculiar sort of energy that emanates from an active confluence between two codes: a beat frequency, a moire. It is at once a kind of friction, and a marriage. The eight forms Jordie Albiston has developed for this book are generous to her aims because they are stable, just, and have as their unifying principle order. They work as worthy vehicles for what the poet wants to say, with shoulders broad enough to bear the intricacies and depth of her precise interior world. As well, they operate as commentaries on the fragility of existence, a sense of chaos, and broader discordant realities of the 'post‐truth' human condition. This is not a book of high mathematics: rather, an attempt to migrate some of the innate robustness, clarity and elegance of Euclidean thought into the realm of poetic structure. Albiston's formal experiments do not operate as mere theory, dry equations or games, but authentic poetic events, at the same time harmoniously familiar, and strange.

Author Information Jordie Albiston's latest titles are The Weekly Poem: 52 exercises in closed & open forms (Puncher & Wattmann, 2014) and Jack & Mollie (& Her) (UQP, 2016). She lives in Melbourne, Australia.

Available Now Paul Cliff is a poet, playwright and editor whose poetry, stories, critical articles and reviews have been widely published over the past 30 years. Among prizes won (or for which he has been shortlisted) are the Mattara Poetry Prize, the David Campbell and Rosemary Dobson Prizea. Deadline: A Manual for Hostage‐Taking won the Canberra Playwright's Award 2000 and was produced at Canberra's Theatre 3. He has worked for multinational publishing houses, universities and magazines, and was Senior Editor at both the National Library of Australia and the National Gallery of Australia. This, his sixth collection, consolidates and extends the range of his previous work, with diverse themes touching on popular culture, the political versus private worlds, rural and urban locations; artistic, literary and historical figures; the craft of writing and editing; rites of passage (illness, ageing, death); animals and travel. And on the sometimes surprising interconnectino of these. Poems assume an array of forms including dramatic monologues, lyrics, elegies, sonnets, haiku, epigrams, ekphrastic pieces and prose poems ‐ all underpinned by the observant eye, verbal inventiveness, infectious sense of play, swinging rhythms and striking imagery which critics have noted in his earlier collections.

Available Now While there have been many studies documenting the close relationship between the early drawings of young children and written language, it is exciting for educators and parents to learn, through the research of Dr Booth, that intuitive pattern painting, free from the expectation of producing representative images, can support the development of mathematical and scientific concepts. ‐ Edward Broomhall I first became aware of Drora's ideas in the 1970s. I was a lecturer in Child Development at the Nursery School Teachers' College, where Drora had trained to become an early childhood teacher. Over a long period she had been developing her theory regarding the value of children's non-representational painting, and what their paintings revealed about early stages of their intellectual development. I saw examples of what she described in my own children's preschool paintings, so I was intrigued and hoped she would continue to both work with children and further explore the links between children's painting and the foundations of mathematical thinking. Drora has indeed gone on to make this her life's work. She has been an inspiration both as a dedicated teacher and a scholar who was prepared to go against received wisdom regarding the way children should be taught to paint, and to study higher mathematics in order to gain a deeper understanding of the significance of children's intuitive patternmaking. The result has been her collection of beautiful children's paintings, the gift to many children of an absorbing and satisfying activity, and a bold and original contribution to our understanding of how children's concepts develop. I hope that research in the future will build on the foundations she has laid, with consequent benefit to the education of our children. - Leone Huntsman

George Augustus Robinson was appointed Protector of Aborigines in Van Diemen's land and in the Port Phillip district in the 1830s and 1840s. He wasn't much of a protector! In truth, no individual could have done much better. There was a war on: a battle over the land, in which the Aboriginal people were outnumbered and outgunned. On the positive side, George did try to understand the culture and language of the Aboriginal people with whom he came into contact. Not many others did! This little book is a small step towards righting an old wrong.

The central event of the gold rushes to the Victorian goldfields was the Eureka Rebellion. And the central character in the Eureka Rebellion was Peter Lalor. Did you know he lost his left arm as a result of the battle? That put an end to his gold digging days.

The Duke of Wellington described Macquarie as "An Excellent Man." He certainly was an excellent governor of New South Wales. He saw beyond a convict colony to a vision of a great city on a great harbour.

A strapping young lad from country Victoria, Weary played rugby for Australia while studying medicine. He went to England to further his studies but caught caught up in the maelstrom of the Second World War. He served in Greece and Tobruk before becoming a hero of the prison camps of the Burma Railway. Worked strenuously for returned soldiers and for other good causes after the war. It is often said that John Macarthur was the father of the wool industry in Australia. But he spent so much time exiled in England, leaving his good wife in charge, that she surely deserves to be acknowledged as the more important parent who enabled Australia to 'ride on the sheep's back' for so long.

John Simpson, aka John Kirkpatrick, aka the Man with the Donkey, was a hero of the Gallipoli campaign, though he never fired a shot in anger. He was an Englishman, yet he was typical of the young Australians who set out on a great adventure in 1915... and never came back. He was a larrikin, didn't like bosses and never had a permanent job. But when the going got tough, he was the sort of bloke you would like to have beside you.

Thanks to Fred, well over a million people who were blind are able to see. He gave sight to the blind in far away places such as Nepal, Eritrea and Vietnam, but it was his unselfish commitment to the eye health of Australian Aborigines that first made us sit up and take notice. Australian of the Year in 1990.

Discover the heroic story of Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Prize-winning leader of the Burmese National League for Democracy. Witness her extraordinary courage as she takes a stand against a brutal military government that places her under house arrest - even after her party wins 59% of the vote in a general election. With brilliant full-colour illustrations, this title vividly recounts one of the most inspiring lives of our times.

Yagan (c. 1795-1833) was a Nyoongar man from the Perth area who resisted white settlement until he was shot in the back and killed. There was a war on: a war which it is time to acknowledge.

Annette Kellerman (1887-1975) contracted polio as a young child in Sydney, but it did not stop her from becoming a world famous long distance swimmer, a vaudeville star in America and Europe, and a megastar of silent movies.

Lucy is not a morning person. Not only because she loves her bed, but because she always wakes up with hair full of knots and tangles. Have you ever wondered why your hair gets knotty while you sleep? Lucy is on a mission to find out why!

Author Information José Saracho was born in Pontevedra, a small city on the North-West Coast of Spain. In his youth, when he wasn’t outdoors playing and exploring, he loved spending countless hours drawing in his bedroom. It was natural progression that when the time came to decide on a career, José chose to study Fine Arts. He studied his degree at the University of Barcelona where he specialised in graphic design. After finishing university he worked in the design and advertising industry for more than fifteen years in Barcelona, Glasgow, and Perth, where he has been living for over a decade with his wife and three daughters. About five years ago José felt it was time for a change. Why not try something different and become a firefighter? He thought. So he swapped the computer and mouse for a big red truck. Fighting fires has not extinguished his creative passion, and he still enjoys dedicating some of his spare time to his own artistic projects. José’s graphic design background is obvious in his illustration style. His eclectic approach to illustration combines a nostalgic retro look with a contemporary touch. Parenting three young girls has been a constant source of inspiration for José. Watching them grow has sparked endless ideas, all waiting to be turned into fun and amusing stories. The Tuggies is one such story.
