Plenty of retirees take a holiday. When Brian Rix retired after 36 years as a policeman in Victoria rather than hitching up the caravan, he put his wife, journalist Shirley Hardy-Rix, on the back of his motorcycle and headed off for a ride. For the next 16 months Brian and Shirley rode more than 83,000 kilometres through 32 countries on five continents with side trips to Antarctica and Galapagos Islands. They rode from the bottom of South America to the very top of North America. They rode over the Andes, sometimes more than 5,000 metres high. They rode through deserts, the tropics and up to Alaska. They had a catastrophic breakdown in the heart of bear country and suffered altitude sickness. The motorcycle didn’t make it to Antarctica but they did –taking them from Antarctica Circle to the Arctic Circle … and then a bit more. Beautifully illustrated in full colour throughout, Circle to Circle is an engaging account of the travels of an adventurous couple. It will entertain you in your armchair, or it may even inspire you to get up and go! ABOUT THE AUTHORS Now enjoying retirement, Brian was a policeman in Victoria for 36 years. During that time he headed up the Homicide Squad, investigated drug trafficking, kidnappings, armed robberies and worked undercover. He spent the final five years of his career as President of the powerful police union, The Police Association. Shirley met Brian when she was working as a crime reporter on Melbourne TV and radio. She is now a freelance journalist working as a magazine editor and publicist for film, TV and publishing. Shirley has published two collections of humorous police stories, a police history and, with Brian, the story of their 2003/2004 overland motorcycle trip from London to Australia, Two for the Road. Praise for Brian & Shirley's previous book, Two for the Road Makes you want to get up and go.Australian Women’s Weekly Few books are as inspirational as that just written by Melbourne journalist Shirley Hardy-Rix and her policeman husband Brian Rix. Herald Sun For bikers and those with itchy feet. Sunday Age The inspiring story of two middle-aged adventurers.Manly Daily A great read for anyone with a yearning for the open road and exotic climes. West Australian A must-read for adventurous hearts. Canberra Times For anyone who’s ever dreamed of escaping and experiencing the romance of the open road. Inverell Times This book might tip undecided travellers over the edge – no bad thing. Two Wheels Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

November 2013 New Title Release There is no better way to live in the moment than to live with an old dog. In this delightfully wise little book, old dogs share their secrets for a stress‐free life. It’s the ultimate guide to meditation. It will help you and inner peace. Maybe even the meaning of life! And it’s the perfect gift for dog lovers all over the world. About the Author After a career in teaching, marketing, public relations and private employment, Suzanne McCourt has embraced the joys and challenges of a writing life. Her first novel is currently with a publisher, she has won prizes for her short stories, and several of her poems trundle around Melbourne on trains as part of the Moving Galleries project. Suzanne's life changed dramatically when she adopted Brando, a three year old Poodle of great gentleness and wisdom. Through Brando she became involved in pet therapy in hospitals and also founded FIDO & CO (Fellowship of Informed Dog Owners & Cat Owners), a community group that worked with her local Council to develop a Domestic Animal Plan which has made the Bayside area where she lives in suburban Melbourne, one of the most pet friendly in the world. When Brando died, Suzanne discovered she was far from alone in loving and losing an old dog. She has written 'Old Dogs' in remembrance of Brando and for dog owners all over the world.

November 2013 New Title Release Tanya Bartolini grew up in the lushness of Australia’s tropical north Queensland. Childhood memories are of simple times: swimming and fishing with her brothers in the Great Barrier Reef and coastal estuaries; of family gatherings full of stories and food…and of arguments with friends over whose Nonna made the best pasta sauce. Tanya represents a generation of Italo‐Australians who, despite living 15000 kilometres from the home country of grandparents, have embraced the culinary traditions of their heritage with gusto. Family and food are part of her DNA; as essential to her being as oxygen. The blending of cultures is more than a family history. It’s a sharing of precious family recipes that add to Australia’s gastronomic mix and encourage families and friends to gather, cook and share a meal together, creating memorable moments along the way. Tanya Bartolini pursued a successful career in finance and business development but found true satisfaction in the kitchen. In 2013, she established The Everyday Cook Network www.theeverydaycooknetwork.com to celebrate and share wholesome healthy cooking with ‘everyday cooks’, like herself, every day. Tanya lives in Brisbane, Australia with her husband and son and travels regularly to her hometown of Ingham for a dose of Nonna Ida’s pasta sauce as well as to her extended family in Italy.

November 2013 New Title Release In 1926 at a tradesmen’s camp in the middle of nowhere, some keen footballers met in ‘Big Jim’ Welsh’s tent to form their own club. They called it Eastlake. A couple of years later, other men, who were in Canberra to help build the first homes and roads – a n d Parliament House – founded another team: Manuka. In Kick it long, Keith Miller traces the story of these two great clubs and the characters who made them. It’s the story of their fierce rivalry during the years when Australian football was king in the national capital. It’s the story of how footy and Canberra changed and how Eastlake and Manuka became a single footy club … and a vibrant community organisation.

The spectacular mountain railway from Wodonga to Cudgewa in north eastern Victoria was one of Australia’s truly fascinating branch lines, and the most challenging to operate on the Victorian Railways. It was a railway of scenic splendour, famous for its towering wooden bridges, notoriously steep grades, Hereford cattle and K class steam locomotives. This lavishly illustrated publication includes over 100 colour and B&W photographs, and tells the story of the railway through the memories of Cudgewa railway enginemen, station masters, bridge gangers, cattle drovers and local residents. Crucial aspects of the line's history are also covered, including 'Tallangatta ‐ The Town that Moved', the Bonegilla Migrant Reception Centre, the Snowy Mountains Hydro‐Electric Scheme, and harrowing accounts of the two 1964 runaway train wrecks.

Norman McCance was one of the stars of early radio in Melbourne. He became immensely popular during the second half of the 1920s for his broadcasts of wrestling matches on radio station 3LO, now known as 774 ABC. But his work over 60 years encompassed far more than wrestling. He was the Argus newspaper’s State Political reporter for many years and for both the Argus and the ABC made radio broadcasts of major events such as the first international flight to Melbourne in 1926. For a decade in the 1930s he wrote and broadcast one of the very first morning news programs. In his later years he became better known as a naturalist, his lifelong passion for animals becoming his profession. He wrote a nature column for the Weekly Times for over 24 years, right up until the age of 81.

About the Author HMC is a freelance writer, teacher and artist who resides on the Gold Coast, Australia. She has a degree in psychology, writes a column for an online magazine and blogs about global issues. HMC is inspired by many genres, but has always been particularly fascinated by magic, thrillers or books with a twist. ‘It’s so great when I don’t see it coming. Who doesn’t love a good twist?’ At the tender age of eleven, she found her first favourite author‐ Stephen King. At bedtime, she would creep out into the hallway where there was just enough light to read on. When the couch squeak signalled her mother’s movement, she would rush back to bed and hide under the covers. HMC went on to fall obsessively in love with reading and has spent hour upon hour in the clasps of an eclectic bunch of authors from R.L Stein and Paul Jennings to J.R.R. Tolkien. She later moved on to fall for authors such as the late and great Bryce Courtenay and J.K Rowling. HMC began drawing around the age of twelve and would look through tattoo books at her mother’s friend’s garage. She would copy the images until she began to form a style of her own. Art became another obsession and she began to put the artwork with her poems and writing. HMC was ‘unable’ to attend a tattoo parlour for her work experience placement in year eleven. It was a good thing too apparently, because her second choice was a primary school classroom. There, HMC fell in love with the children and often speaks very passionately about her first profession.

Jacket not final This brand new collection of 28 short stories by Janet Frame spans the length of her career and contains some of the best she wrote. None of these stories has been published in a collection before, and more than half are published for the first time in Between My Father and the King. Previously published pieces have appeared in Harper's Bazaar, the NZ Listener, the New Zealand School Journal, Landfall and The New Yorker over the years, and one otherwise unpublished piece, 'The Gravy Boat', was read aloud by Frame for a radio broadcast in 1953. In these stories readers will recognise familiar themes, scenes, characters and locations from Frame's writing and life, and each offers a fresh fictional transformation that will captivate and absorb. From the Publisher “Unlike many great writers who die leaving minor scraps of literature, Frame left a veritable treasure trove of stories and poems for her estate to manage after her death. Wilkins Farago published her un‐published poems The Goose Bath in 2008 to enormous acclaim and these short stories are every bit as important, satisfying and entertaining. Frame was a master of life in miniature.’ – Andrew Wilkins, Publisher

From a fatal house fire in a working‐class suburb of Melbourne during the 1970s, the reader is taken back forty years to the Ireland of the Great Depression where the story begins its journey across the world. Its central theme is one of adoption … love, loss, loyalty and above all, the complexities and strength of the human spirit. When Dinny O’Flaherty is orphaned as a boy in a suburb of Melbourne during the 1930s, he is taken in by his next‐door neighbour and her autistic son and raised to adulthood in their tiny timber cottage. Less than a decade later in that same suburb, Ruby Collins falls pregnant to an American serviceman stationed there during the 2nd World War, and as she is young, unmarried and without any means of support, she is pressured into giving her baby up for adoption. As the lives of these people become intertwined along with the myriad of characters that help to shape them, each and every one has a role to play along the road to the story’s dramatic conclusion. About the Author Finally in remission after having been diagnosed with cancer during a twenty year career with a leading Australian financial institution, Phillip now divides his time between pursuing his interests in fiction writing and part‐time counselling work in both the drug and alcohol sector and the field of problem gambling. Twenty‐five years after Gabrielle Gouch left her native land, Transylvania, communism collapsed and the author returned to Romania from Australia to visit her half‐brother Tom who told her stories about his life under communism. Though the story is factual, the author uses her strong eye for detail and the techniques of fiction to create this engaging and thought‐provoking account about ordinary people in turbulent times. These sad and funny tales are interleaved with the story of the rest of the family from which Tom became estranged. This memoir portrays the exodus of Jewish families from Romania and their arrival in the Promised Land, a dream come true for some but a shock for others. It explores issues of identity, disability, emigration and family relationships against a background of the major political events of the time from a perspective that challenges some accepted views. About the author Gabrielle Gouch was born in Transylvania, Romania. At the age of twenty she and her family emigrated to Israel. Seven years later she emigrated again, this time to Australia. Trained in science, she worked as a Research Scientist in universities, major companies and most recently in the Public Service. She has a daughter and lives with her husband in Sydney. This is her first book.

If you’ve ever been involved in a petty squabble and found yourself before the courts you might want to read this astonishing story. A dispute over $115, with a nudge from the legal system, took on a life of its own and over ten years involved every court in the country including the High Court of Australia. Tired of pedestrian legal advice and ballooning costs, reluctant hero, Alan Manly, a self‐acknowledged manic obsessive compulsive former postman, former television repairman and would‐be entrepreneur with a ninth grade education, sacked his lawyers and took on the system. In this thrilling account he finds himself accused, sued, defamed, assaulted – stumbling over shams, sexual predators and suicide, unemployed and teetering on the edge of bankruptcy – his life virtually a smoking ruin. In this David and Goliath rematch he exposes the legal system that so easily crushes the innocent. Sometimes hilarious, even ridiculous, but a true Australian story. Rob and Rosemary Peterswald, the authors of the bestselling titles From the Sea and Beyond the Shore, explore the Western Mediterranean on their yacht Sea Dreams. The Mediterranean Sea has been the cradle of western civilisation. From the earliest times it has nourished ancient empires, spawned countless legends and has been the scene of epic battles that have changed the course of history. Today it remains a place of beauty and danger, joy and pain, indulgence and austerity, and as much as ever, a crossroads of the world. On their cruise, the Peterswalds visit Sardinia, Corsica, Elba, the Balearics, Sicily and the coasts of France and Italy, capturing the beauty of the 'Middle Sea' and its wondrous coastline. They sail past high rugged mountains protected by ancient fortresses, anchor in enchanting bays and visit mystical cities that date from antiquity. This beautifully photographed book celebrates the joy and vibrancy of life in the Mediterranean.
Sea Dreams in the Adriatic is the second in a series exploring the Mediterranean by Tasmanian couple, Rob and Rosemary Peterswald. Previous books by the authors include, the first book in this series, Sea Dreams in the Western Mediterranean, From the Sea and Beyond the Shore. In this superbly photographed book Sea Dreams continues her Mediterranean odyssey, sailing from the Messina Strait, across the foot of Italy to one of the world's most historically interesting and beautiful seas. She visits eastern Italy, Montenegro and the Dalmation and Istrian coasts and islands of Croatia, and Venice. Along the way are ancient cities that nurtured the Renaissance and remain inspirational today, fortresses and towering mountains that in summer are mostly framed by a perfect azure sky, yet can be menacing and veiled in swirling clouds.

The story of Bells Beach is much more than a powerful narrative about the world's longest running board riding event, a contest that began as a rally half a century ago and became the Rip Curl Pro. It is the story of a collection of fearless pioneers who discovered this iconic big‐wave beach and made it their own. It is the story of Australian surfing, from its amateur roots, through the rebellious 1960s and the country soul era of the early 1970s to the professionalism of today. It is the story of how a tiny cottage industry became a global empire. Most of all, it is the stories of the people who surf at Bells, especially those who make the annual Easter pilgrimage and compete for the most coveted trophy on the world tour. 'Bells' celebrates the 50‐year history of the world's longest‐running surfing contest and the story of one of Australia's most iconic beaches, and draws on interviews with surfers including Wayne Lynch, Midget Farrelly, Nat Young, Terry Fitzgerald, Michael Petersen.

Author of eleven best‐sellers Sandy Thorne has always delivered the goods with an entertaining read, since she launched "I'VE MET SOME BLOODY WAGS!" in 1980, by biting the top off a stubby on the MIDDAY SHOW. This hilarious, true story about her two-month stay in hospital, is an ideal gift to cheer up someone who's a bit crook. At the same time, it highlights the shortcomings of our public hospitals. Australia sends billions to countries who don't give a bugger about us, while our hospitals are desperate for funds to lift staffing, cleaning and maintenance standards. Fairly outrageous, a bit un-p.c. - Australia's journos will not be able to resist talking and writing about this lively yarn from a straightshooting sheila from the bush. Buyers will get more laughs from BEDPAN BLUES than from Wayne Swan's budget speech.

From childhood to the present, the author of The Black Sheep — the autobiography of a paraplegic details the events leading towards his motorbike accident that resulted in his becoming a paraplegic, how his life dramatically changed and how he has dealt with it ever since. Being the Black Sheep in his family the author is always fighting his father for the right to live his life his own way. He also encounters the same battle when admitted to various hospitals to help him recover from his accident and deal with the new situation he finds himself in. Biography‐ Ray is a fifty‐five year old gentleman and an ex‐Australian trooper in the second commando company. He likes to live it up either in the streets with the boys having a few coffees, going to street cages and laying off the women in droves online, but on the serious side he has his eye firmly affixed on the idea of finding a wife usually online with the dating agencies on the computer. Ray’s hobbies are collecting DVDs, film classics and stamps. He also enjoy delving into the unknown with spiritualism, tarot and meditation.

The disintegration of a marriage and a plummeting in financial and social status when in her late forties, leaves the author stranded with a limited income, custody of the two youngest children, a mortgage, no provision for her old age and an employment history fractured by part‐ time positions structured around family responsibilities. A recruitment advertisement for prison officers in the wake of the Nagle Royal Commission becomes the catalyst for a major career change with the New South Wales Department of Corrective Services, and catapults her into a world beyond her imagination. However, this choice launches her into a fulfilling, stimulating career, delivering not only financial security and a professional status, but also the privilege of working with dedicated colleagues and offenders and their families. Avoiding a catalogue of sensational revelations about staff and offenders, she narrates the experiences through the prism of a naive, middle‐ class housewife and mother with humour and compassion and tries to convey insights into, and a broader understanding of the many facets of the world of corrections and its links with society. Interwoven with these experiences are the challenges of adapting to the life of a single person and mother while completing a BA at Macquarie University. Retiring in her mid‐sixties after a seventeen year career, she has no misgivings about her decision to work in this much‐maligned industry.

Together the stories of these men show how communism destroyed liberty, terrorised an entire nation and tried to kill the essence of freedom itself. The author contends that the war in Vietnam was a just war and that the soldiers who risked and gave their lives in that prolonged conflict deserve our ultimate respect. If it was asked of you to fix the world’s economic problems, and you were given the power to do so, where would you start? If I then asked you to stop and seriously give it more than ten minutes thought, what would you change, and how would you do it? Every second of every day costs us millions of dollars without us doing anything because every government is in debt. How would the dynamic of the world be different if there were no debts and those funds could be freed up to enhance the lives of everyone on the planet? What if I said that we can stop the rampant explosion ofcapitalism and take control of it, and in fact, we can grind the whole thing to a halt. In twenty years we could have restructured the course of history for thousands of generations to come, if we started right now. Why aren’t we? Just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean it’s impossible. What is the hurry when humanity may have millions of years left, and we act like there’s no tomorrow?

If you wish to achieve greater success as a boss or generally as a person, you will be captivated by Harold’s insights. He certainly loved the challenge of conducting business. He quickly realised that you could introduce new ideas that would add to the success of the business and enable you to have more fun. Harold constantly thought about what was happening and how it could be improved. The same was true when “an incident” ‐ something unexpected, usually with negative consequences ‐ unfolded. Harold would think through the issues that had precipitated the incident, review them and frequently emerge with an insight into how it could have been prevented or how to prevent a recurrence.

We were first introduced to Nosh and his furry crew in 'All Aboard the Nutmobile!', the first book in the Nutmobile series, aimed at readers 3 years and upwards. This was followed by the successful sequel, 'The Harvest Race'. In this third adventure, the Macadamia House Team has joined forces with Santa to bring you something completely nuts this Christmas! Starring the same Aussie cast ‐ and featuring a guest appearance by the jolly man in red ‐ this merry tale sees Nosh the Nutmobile coming face to face with Santa and his nine reindeer. In the true spirit of Christmas, the reindeer overindulge ‐ they munch too many macadamias and are thus too heavy to take to the sky. A magical 'tug' results in a magical chug through the night sky, as Nosh helps Santa deliver the Christmas gifts to the same furry crew we've met before...but will he deliver them all in time? The story ‐ despite being somewhat magical ‐ is still very much inspired by experiences on the Bromet family's macadamia farms, and carries a strong Australian theme, which is communicated both visually through the characters and setting as well as in the rhyming verse. Join Nosh the Nutmobile on his festive adventure as he discovers the many wonders of Christmas as well as the magical gift of giving.
