Words From The Wise Sometimes we just don't get enough time to do what we should be doing all the time. I had an experience last week when I read the new Wilkins Farago book - My Father the Pirate. At the end of the book I was consumed by its closeness or proximity even though the setting is Belgium and Italy. My immediate thoughts were that the imagery that had been seen many times by myself sitting observing on those slick Mediterranean ferries where the truckers sit eating Salami, Artichokes and a glass of vino. I then realised this could have been a story from our own Snowy Mountains scheme of the 1950's, or from so many families who live in Australia. If you like the book you will enjoy the Teachers notes as well. I waited this morning at a Melbourne bookshop and sidled up to the fiction section and caught a glimpse of the . US hardback edition of the latest Richard Flanagan. Deckle edge anda prudent 300 plus pages instead of the brick C format. I measured the size of the imported edition and quickly realised it will fit the economy seating for my next flight and made the purchase. So it took me almost twelve months to buy the book and in a format that suited me. We are getting further into the Taschen books from Gardners and the realisation that when someone buys the Annie sumo they will need a large trolley to have it forked from the delivery truck: 53 kg, the weight of most of the jockeys at a horse racing meeting. I checked the global websites for the art edition and only found it priced and listed on one site from the US. So for the main game outlets there is a big point of difference achieved via the stocking of this book. Takes me back to the three points I have just written about; sustained point of difference , sustained value of offering and the wonderful physical offering we can curate. Had a good week in Adelaide last week, I met a publisher of note , Tony Crawford of Dinotopia fame. Hopefully we will have a new Young Adult title from him and perhaps some quality backlist from his New Guinea collection. Busiest bookshop award went to Dymocks Rundle Mall who had a queue of customer service people answering questions from shoppers: great to see so many on a Wednesday. My apology notes: we made an error on the October order from with the classification of the James Morrison it is a biography not an autobiography, and it has the full support of James' management so expect strong demand.
By the way the Fabulous Fred achieved everything we anticipated in promotion and demand. As I write this we are at the tail end of the stock and it will be a sellout two weeks before Father's Day. Thank you to those Retailers who got behind it. We will have an ebook then the reprint I guess will be 6 weeks away. Work moves on: I met Blanche d'Alpuget the other day and also was introduced to our former Prime Minister R J (Bob) Hawke - it was the day after the Gary Evans brouhaha. Bob was spirited and commented on his editorial skills. The Lion Rampant is the book from Blanche and it is going to be good for all the booksellers as we will only be supplying the shops and onliners. Debbie McInnes is building a strong media campaign with launches and an Australian Story. I also met with Graham Rendoth the eminent book designer and it will look impeccable. The Queensland leg of the trip was interesting as I found two things intersect. The SMH have touted the reappearance of Poor Fellow My Country by Xavier Herbert after it being O/p for 25 years (it could not be that long). Anyway my mind went back to a signed copy I have from Xavier Herbert commemorating the launch of the book in 1975: & I remember the mss was delivered to 36 Clarence Street on a trolley it was that enormous. Even the paper stock had to be a hybrid of India paper and roll your own tobacco paper. So to be then confronted with a window display of Miles Franklin award winning books back to the 70s at Mary Ryan Noosa made for good memories. Thank you Ross. It was maybe twenty years ago in Portland Oregon visiting Powells where I saw at first hand the dimension of the Miles Franklin winners. This store had an elderly woman in charge of the Pultizers collection, and of course a collection of Miles Franklin award winners. Good booksellers range a broad church of books. Sell plenty, read more . DJ

When Georges closed its doors on 5 October 1995, it had been trading for 115 years. Yet this famous department store, situated in the ‘Paris End’ of Collins Street, still lingers in the minds of many today. Remembering Georges documents the memories of staff and clients before this living connection fades. The unique ‘voice’ of each interviewee shines through, because the memories are in their own words. This richly illustrated book displays some of the fabulous images associated with Georges, reflecting the style and elegance of the store itself. Georges devotees, as well as those interested in fashion, design, and Melbourne’s retail and social history, will revel in the stories held within. ‘ I, like many other people, remember Georges very fondly. I wanted to document the memories of staff and clients, and display some of the fabulous images associated with the store, before this living connection is lost. Alan Black, for example, is 94 years old, and has some wonderful stories about the store during his long time spent there as Buyer for Georg Jensen, Stuart Devlin, Waterford and Marghab linen. Nancy Balding worked at Georges between 1948 and 1989, and served in the famous Front Showroom, which carried the most fabulous of fashion and clientele. Michael Shmith, son of the photographer Athol and model ‘Bambi’ Shmith, talks of his devotion to the store almost being ruined by the sight of a price‐tag on a handkerchief displayed in the windows. The ‘voice’ of each interviewee comes through, because the memories are in their own words.’ Annette Cooper About the Author Annette Cooper has had a lifelong interest in Melbourne’s social and architectural history, especially the landscape of the city. She was a devoted client of Georges, enjoying its elegant and refined atmosphere. In Remembering Georges, she brings together these two interests, and hopes that the book will serve as a tribute to one of Melbourne’s most-loved stores.

The champions, the glory, the tragedy, the drama, the passion and the humour. The View From the Clouds peels back the layers of horse racing, revealing the core truths beneath its skin. A biography that recalls the deeds of some of the greatest pacers that ever lived and an industry's human participants, both famed and unheralded. Successful author Jack Crane has written a book set in the beautiful garden of the house where he lived as a ten‐year‐ old: a garden full of mystery, secrets and challenges. The story is of an unhappy child who discovers that the ornaments in this special place come to life when night falls and how they welcome him into their world of magic, hope and friendship. Jack's children believe their father when he tells them that the story is just a fantasy, until one day when Mia, the six‐year‐old daughter, confronts her father: 'Daddy, I saw one of them. She ran away when I said your name. But she was real. I know she was!' About the Author Sue Burnell lives with her husband and two dogs in the picturesque Coromandel Valley in the Adelaide Hills. She majored in children's literature at college as part of her Diploma of Teaching, and after gaining her Bachelor of Special Education, Sue specialised in dealing with children having learning difficulties. In 2000 she resigned from classroom teaching after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. She then started her own tutoring venture and commenced working on her first novel, Jack Crane's Secret World.

Advice on parenting
Publisher

How to provide for your child's social and emotional development. ‐ Do you worry about your children? ‐ Are you confused or confronted by their emotional outbursts? ‐ Do you often find yourself wondering, 'What do I do now?' Child and adolescent psychiatrist Andrew Wake has worked with children, adolescents and their parents for more than ten years, and knows how difficult it can be for parents to manage their own emotions let alone help their children manage theirs. He explains that children naturally want everything, but that our job as parents is to give them 'just enough'. Indeed, parenting can be thought of as a gradual shift from 'saving' our children (telling them what to do) to 'supporting' them (allowing them the freedom to learn for themselves). Dr Wake demystifies children's behaviour by explaining how their brains and their early attachment experiences work together to influence their emotional development. He offers practical advice on: ‐responding to strong emotions ‐setting boundaries ‐communicating as a family Peppered with excellent case studies, this reassuring book will inspire confidence in parents, carers and anyone who works with children. 'I found each chapter compelling and moving, yet extremely positive. It is a story in which we share the hurt of the "punches" but see victory in the "rolling".' ‐Assoc Prof John D. Yeo, AO A spinal injury at a young age might have killed off a career in stand‐up but it did not temper Ian Simpson's philosophy of not taking life too seriously. But will this mindset be strong enough to cope with the greatest medical crisis of them all? His story will have you laughing and crying‐and often on the same page. Ian Simpson has spent most of his 49 years living in a wheelchair, giving him a different perspective on life to a lot of people. He has been a History teacher and Learning Designer for over 25 years. He is a Paralympian and has represented Australia in the sports of table tennis and wheelchair rugby. The Peaceful People is the story of the Penan, the jungle nomads of Sarawak, who for decades have fought for possession and preservation of their traditional forest lands. Drawing on extensive first‐hand interviews, as well as the diaries and journals of explorers, botanists and colonial administrators, and the observations of missionaries, the book provides the most comprehensive account of the dynamics of Penan society to date. Written in a compelling and accessible style, the narrative tells the shocking history of the Penan, exposing massacres and murders, while recounting the nomads' uniquely shy and peaceful way of life. In particular, the analysis focuses on the Penan's consistently non‐violent modern‐day protests against rampant logging which attracted world attention in the 1980s and 1990s. The Peaceful People is essential reading for those interested in the history and culture of Borneo, the politics of logging and development, and the lives of indigenous peoples who seek new ways to survive in a hostile world.

Garry Fabian
Born Gerhard Fabian in Stuttgart, Germany on 11th January 1934, Garry's early years of life were spent travelling between countries to avoid persecution by the Nazis. In 1935 his family moved to Bodenback, Czechoslovakia, to avoid the ramifications of the Nuremberg Laws. With news of Germany's annexation of Czechoslovakia, Garry and his mother travelled to Trenchin in Slovakia, then to Brno in Moravia to meet his father, then finally travelled to Prague by the end of 1938. Life in Prague was difficult for his family and they were forced to live under false documents. A steady income was generated by Garry's father's 'illegal' employment as a chauffeur, and the sale of his mother's hand‐made items. During this time, Garry did not attend school but received private tuition. Life was difficult, however worse was to come. In November 1942, Garry and his family were deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto, established a year earlier in order to house those considered 'undesirables' by the Nazi regime. There the Fabian family were confronted with filthy living quarters, disease infested conditions and a diet that resulted in malnutrition. Garry endured, in succession, the measles, chicken pox and whooping cough. Initially Garry wandered the camp aimlessly, but was later put to work in the tailoring shop. In time, he came to understand the culture that had developed in the camp and even gained an invaluable education provided by an elderly teacher. In May 1945, the ghetto was liberated by the Russian Army. Out of 15,000 children that entered the ghetto only 150 survived, including Garry. His parents also survived. Although luck played a large part in their survival, Garry's father was in charge of the medical supply store and was classified as 'essential'. After liberation, Garry and his family emigrated to Australia in 1947. Garry attended school and later obtained a junior technical certificate that provided him with an electrical apprenticeship for five years until 1955. In 1956, Garry enlisted in the Australian Navy for a compulsory six months. In 1958 he became engaged to Evelyn Schlesinger and took over his father's business, as his father had died that year. Over the years Garry has held many jobs whilst supporting his wife and two daughters. Fabian's autobiography details life in the Theresienstadt ghetto and his 'new life' in Australia post-war. Garry's description of a child's life in the ghetto opens an unknown world to the reader. Fabian's responsibilities and actions as an 8-11 year old in the ghetto are poignant and revealing, demonstrating how a child's life was shaped by the Nazi regime. Written in a clear and direct style, and in chronological order, this narrative presents an important account of a life deeply affected by the Holocaust, but not defeated by it.

"We were never given a reason for being sent to the orphanage, but I suspect my father was in some sort of trouble. Our board and lodging was paid for. It turned out that my brother and I were the only children there who had two living parents. Most of the other children had only one parent, or were actually orphans." Life‐changing experiences are not new to Estelle Harris. Born in England, she would come to Australia out of obligation to her family, and spend years struggling to carve out a life of her own. All the while her parents would discredit her very existence, referring to her as nothing more than a 'Great Trial'. Told in raw and honest language, The Great Trial is Estelle's story, and her attempt to come to terms with the great trials of her own life. But most importantly it's a story about the realisation of hope, after a lifetime of pursuit.

What happens when you plunk down a thirty year‐old culturally unaware management consultant in Heidelberg, Germany? I didn't speak German. I didn't have any experience working with Europeans. The Twin Towers had just collapsed, and I had no idea whether I would sink or swim. When I met my good‐looking Dutch colleague and decided to take my next assignment in the Netherlands, I nearly drowned. That's when I figured out that maybe I was the one that needed to change, not an entire continent.

I used to believe I was what some people would refer to as 'normal' compared to others. My life was healthy, free and fun. I was brought up with discipline by my mother, security and values. The sudden news of my mother's terminal illness was the beginning of loss for me. My mother was a very powerful woman, and through playing hockey with her and being the only daughter, I had a very close yet distant bond. After facing more tragedy, I became depressed and my resilience was low. My brother had committed suicide on February 25th 2012. As I work in the mental health services, I found this confronting and disppointing as I struggled to help him access help. I wanted to share my experience as I know that I am not alone with the experience of living with the impact of the suicide of a loved one. Writing this book has been helpful for me in collecting significant details of my life and making public Philip's personal pain that led to his suicide. I am currently 53 years old. I never married but came out as a lesbian about thirty years ago. I chose to have a career and a child. As a result of my lifestyle, My sixteen-year-old daughter has experienced both adversity and diversity. I was born at the Victor Harbour Hospital and as a child I went to the Yankalilla Area School from grade one to the completion of year twelve. My original plan for a career was to be an art teacher as I loved to paint, but at the time was not accepted to study and chose nursing instead. I continue now to enjoy painting and my preferred subject is nudes. I have been nursing for thirty-five years. The last twenty-five years have been specialising in the area of mental health. I have always been a very active and busy person with several projects going at a time. Our family has always loved fishing and each of us has continued that as we grew up. About five years ago, I decided to breed French bulldogs. They are currently the great love of my life and although a very expensive hobby, they are extremely loving and entertaining. I live in Victor Harbour in a double-storey house with a view of the islands, township and the sea. Since high school, I dreamt of having an art studio on a hill overlooking the sea and nearly thirty years later, I am living in a house on a hill, looking over the sea with my easel, canvasses and paints. Put yourself back in life’s driver’s seat. When life is good, it’s easy to assume it will stay that way. After all, why change a winning formula? But the world around us is changing – and at a faster and faster rate. Some changes will impact us professionally. Others will impact our families. Some might impact our health. These changes will force us to change. It’s likely that the things we are doing now may not work in the future. So how do we alter our current trajectory? And to where should we set our new course? So, if change is inevitable, why not plan for it? And why not go one step further – and actually manage for it? Letting change happen to us is no guarantee of a happy and successful life. Reaching that goal for now and tomorrow means constantly assessing the future and developing skills in predicting and managing the forces of change. Managing for Change is your guide to doing just that. Managing for Change – your guide to building your own better future.

'Let's be very clear about this: every death at sea is a tragedy. No‐one wants to see refugees die in their attempt to escape persecution, but the often‐recited concern about refugees drowning is just hypocritical propaganda. People like Abbott and Morrison express their concern about refugees who drown. They are not sincere, but it provides a vaguely respectable excuse for harsh policies. I will say this plainly: when Abbott and Morrison say they are worried about refugees drowning on their way to Australia, they are lying: they are deceiving the public. It opens the way to mistreat asylum seekers who have not drowned, and helps them pursue the darker purpose of keeping refugees out' ‐Julian Burnside, QC

This volume opens with Keeps, a full‐length book of new poems by LK Holt. Bound‐in with it are her two prior books, Patience, Mutiny and Man Wolf Man. A hallmark of Holt's poetry has always been its continual refreshing of angles of vision. She has a dark skill with the unexpected image, and the thought that goes into an unexpected place. There is immediacy, even abruptness, amid her airy, crafted structures, and her music subsists in this. The keeps in the new book are of course the new poems themselves, which for Holt are essentially findings. Her impulse as a poet is to the retrieving of story, and the objects of the world that erupt from the midst of story. Her bent is at the same time lyrical, sometimes meeting the world afresh through contemplations of paintings, sculpture, and film, and always quietly touching on selfhood. The long, episodic suite, 'Stages of Balthazar', is about a donkey practitioner of instinctual acceptance. Followed and neglected by a Chorus—as it can seem a self deserves—Balthazar goes about his small village life, bearing a great love. By adding her prior two books to this volume, the Press intends not only to keep them in print, but to lay out for readers the fullness of the growth of an oeuvre. The poet has made some excisions and revisions.

A master of melancholic wit, Laurie Clancy was one of Australia's most versatile short story writers. If realism was his artistic staple, he had a genius for farce and the mock‐heroic, and was remarkably adept at magic realism, postmodern experimentation and the fiction of ideas. Equally at home in the pub, the seminar room, literary journals and the columns of daily newspapers, Clancy was a wickedly astute but compassionate and ultimately good‐humoured guide to the vagaries of the human heart, both at home and abroad. This posthumous selection shows him in his pomp as a practitioner of fiction's shorter forms.

"…his characters are crystal clear and throbbing with life." ‐Felicity Dowker, Specusphere The debut collection from multi‐award nominated author Andrew J McKiernan brings together 14 of his published short stories and novelettes, plus two new tales. Often defying conventions of genre and style, these stories range from fantasy and steampunk to science fiction and horror, but always with an edge sharper than a razor and darker than a night on Neptune. From the darkly hilarious "All the Clowns in Clowntown" to the disturbing story "A Prayer for Lazarus", the collection pulls no punches. Delving deep into what scares us most, McKiernan's tales are by turns heartfelt and gut‐wrenching. A collection of horror and dark fantasy from one of Australia's best up‐and‐coming authors that should not be missed.

A SENSATIONAL TRUE AUSTRALIAN 'WHODUNNIT' It's 1964 when a crazed firebug begins torching properties in the once tranquil Hamilton Valley in NSW Australia. Night after night, the wail of sirens wakes the local residents from their sleep. There are no clues to the identity of the culprit, leaving the local police and interstate detectives completely baffled. Little do they know that this would last for close to four years! The detectives have their eye on several persons of interest, when suddenly the method of lighting these fires is discovered... a unique and very clever tactic! When a much loved local is brutally bashed, the valley residents fury burns fierce. Accusations are hurled and friendships shattered as each person becomes suspicious of the other! The Mason family is in shock when confronted by the finger pointed at one of their own for the shocking destruction the 'invisible firebug' is causing the locals. Detectives are alarmed at the explosive anger they experience from the fruit growers when they charge the young man with masterminding the crime. Beautiful Ellie becomes tangled in a web of 'red hot' lust, with dire consequences! The constrictions of Mary's religion suddenly bring on a change to her temperament... much to Harvey's surprise. Father Damien, the priest from the nearby seminary, has a penchant for lurking around, watching the aftermath of the fires... Grandma Emmie, the keeper of family secrets, holds the key to the reason a newcomer has arrived in the valley. She has to make a decision to reveal the truth for all concerned. Bad boy Eddie tests the boundaries when he attracts the eye of young Kathy Miles... over her father's dead body! Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

From debut author Hayden Bradford comes a rip roaring yarn which could be the funniest book published this year. 'Travesty' is an unashamedly hilarious tale of a bloke so hard done by in his life, he could only have been born from the imagination of another bloke. His mother named him Travesty as she believed his birth signalled the beginning of one long, drawn out disaster for her. But without warning, Travesty's life comes to an abrupt and ridiculously funny end. He is then delivered to Heaven. How does that happen to an atheist?

Traven Collins is a sort of detective. He's not really a detective, more what you might call a burnt‐out case who was a writer and now who'll take most any kind of writing job to pay the rent. If it's interesting. He lives in a nice seaside suburb of Melbourne with down‐and‐outers, stand over merchants and ice addicts at one end and pimps, thieves, hookers and transexual rent boys at the other. Traven takes a job from an old friend to promote the visit of the last American beat poet, Duke Weston, who claims to have been a friend of Kerouac & Burroughs etc. Things are going averagely until the first death ‐ which seems to be a hit & run but proves to be a murder. And then the next one...that's murder too. Both of the victims were poets. With his trusty sidekick, the brilliant border collie Maynard G Crabs, Traven sets out to make sure he doesn't become embroiled in these murders most foul & most horrid. And he has to protect Lexi, the young lady who couldn't possibly be his daughter ‐ could she?

"When it came right down to it, I was surprised to discover it really wasn't as hard as I thought it would be to kill Jesse Ray Hawkins." So admits sensitive outcast Nate "Preacher" LaPointe. The exuberant and charismatic Jesse Ray was a prominent local drug dealer is bad enough, but the fact that he was Preacher's best friend and mentor makes the crime almost unfathomable. Careening down a rutted back road to hell, Preacher is pursued on all sides by Jesse's sadistic brothers, a cadre of violent gangbangers, and a deputy sheriff named Junior, who may be the most dangerous foe of all. The path leads to the uncovering of a century‐old mystery. Both a crime novel with strong psychological focus, and a loose retelling of the story of David and Goliath, Crystal Falls presents a dangerous world where love and friendship are tested by the evils of violence and addiction. SARADASI ‐ The Search is a finely written story of intrigue, romance, greed, ambition and redemption. "The Prophecy" predicts terrifying evil beings will destroy the Nereima Galaxy. Shanaz, the young High Chancellor of the Saradasi Empire, leads a team chosen from the ruthless Saradasi race, to defend her home galaxy. The Astral Lord who chose the team members, decreed the only weapon they can use against the destructive evil is the combined goodness they must individually earn. Lord Wynan, one of the team, without explanation, deserts them. To restore the team, Shanaz enters a menacing parallel universe, guided by a possibly untrustworthy robot. She faces both help and danger from mystical beings who communicate in colors, thought‐controlling mercenaries, and religious fanatics who claim they can re‐create Lord Wynan from a single cell of his body. Meanwhile, Sound Masters search for Wynan, using his voice imprint. Far away from the Nereima Galaxy, the search unexpectedly ends with an unforeseen change in Shanaz's life.

He's a powerful being renowned for his mastery in combat and his numerous battles against Lucifer's evil creations. His drive for redemption is his only focus. His aspiration and only desire is to return to heaven from his earthly banishment. Matteaus has a nagging feeling that his life is about to change. Centuries of fighting, and one disastrous relationship with a 'Love Goddess', have kept him away from females; then his next assignment brings him right into the path of the vivacious and fiery Taylor. Yet Taylor is everything that he could dream of, and the one who could possibly tempt him into trying for love again. She stimulates his weary existence; mind, body and soul. But even as their desire for each other begins to overtake them, Matteaus's thirst for redemption and his own personal code of ethics drives him to maintain his distance. He has a powerful and jealous ex‐girlfriend who is hell bent on getting him back, while Lucifer is determined to have her as his potential soul mate. Matteaus's responsibilities as leader of The League of the Fallen require his constant attention. Could this be the mission that finally earns his redemption? Or will his disastrous personal life cost him everything, including the one female he is destined to love?

"The intention of Oneness is to lead people to understand, through verifiable science, that Time doesn't exist. The entire history of homo sapiens is irrefutable proof of how we have, until the present moment, existed in a self‐constructed ethos of Duality, the opposite of 'Oneness'. We are unconscious zombies experiencing mortality and misery. We have only to wake up! "With humility, Oneness is a timely, intelligent, irrefutable wake‐up call written in simple enough terms for any person who can read. 'Oneness' is for the world so long as humans exist. It sets forth the What, Who, Where, How and Why of that pesky 'empty space' we have all experienced within us and have never been able to explain." ‐Jean‐Marie Veronica

Back in the 1990s Melbourne writer Vikki Petraitis set the benchmark for Australian true crime with her bestselling books The Phillip Island Murder and The Frankston Murders. The latter came about because Vikki was doing interviews with members of Victoria Police for her second book of true crime stories. In July 1993 she happened to be doing ride‐alongs with the Frankston police when Paul Charles Denyer began his serial killing spree around the bayside suburbs they policed. Two years later her groundbreaking book was released. Clan Destine Press is honoured to announce that we are the new publisher of the revised and updated edition of her book, now called The Frankston Serial Killer. The riveting and true account of seven horrifying weeks in 1993 when the Australian bayside town of Frankston was terrorised by a series of crimes unlike anything they'd experienced before. Vikki Petraitis details the extensive police investigation into three brutal homicides that led to the search for a serial killer, and the effect that his killing spree had on the families involved and the community as a whole. Few cases in Victoria's history have incited the fear and panic of that winter when a vicious killer was stalking Melbourne's bayside suburbs.

In this story, Plaido, a defiant young Platypus confronts his forest demons but will he fight, flee or befriend them to get the upper‐hand and avoid the perils of an oceanic adventure as well. We see the innate rivalry between species through the eyes of Plaido and the other characters, and feel the anguish when the ambience of their natural habitat is threatened. The life of a Platypus is a mystery to most people because it is superbly adapted to its aquatic environment and is nocturnal. It's a living fossil that has lived virtually unchanged since the times of the dinosaurs and thought to be one of nature's first attempts to create a mammal but it tends to be out of sight and out of mind for most of us. Can a Platypus with an adventurous spirit quit the safety of a secluded rainforest pool and cope with the new challenge of freedom? We see how the whims of nature and a fast changing world affects the survival of Plaido and a bevy of new friends when they travel into unfamiliar territory. This story is about living the dream and succeeding against all the odds.

The Gallipoli legend that we know is not our own. Somehow, we have stolen the British experience of a dawn slaughter on a beach further south, under Turkish guns. The Australian landing on Z Beach, our allotted coast, was tactically brilliant. ANZAC officers planned their own amphibious assault without the interference of British officers, who were content to row ashore in daylight against a prepared enemy. Z Beach True Comics presents the facts. Issue No. 1 ‐ "Gallipoli: The Landing" ‐ is a non‐fiction account of how ANZAC officers used all available intelligence to plan a surprise night assault using stealth. This graphic narrative follows the roles of espionage, spying, and the use of aerial reconnaissance which provided ANZAC officers with the military intelligence to plan an effective assault despite an heavily defended coast.

Australia was unprepared in 1942. The country had sent its soldiers to fight in North Africa, leaving its shores unprotected. Australia's then Prime Minister, Menzies, was more concerned with the defence of Britain than he was for his own nation. The Royal Australian Navy and the Air Force, was likewise committed to defending England's green and pleasant land. There was not one single fighter aircraft to protect Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide or Darwin from the Japanese threat. This factual graphic novel blends realpolitik with the battles to defend Malaya and Singapore from the advancing Imperial Japanese Army. The British naval base at Singapore was considered the lynchpin in defence of Australia. Curtin replaced Menzies with only just enough time to send the poorly trained Australian 8th Division to the steamy jungles of Jahor. This narrative is factually researched and presented in full colour. After reading and following the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Anderson VC, will you appreciate how much Australian owed to so few.

Seen through the eyes of six year old Tomas, the story unfolds through the games Tomas plays as he is transported to Sered Camp, Auschwitz and Terezinstadt, intertwined with the inspirational bravery of his pregnant mother Lolli, who managed to keep Tomas and her newborn baby alive in a camp where 16000 children perished and 123 survived. Far from being a tale of woe, it is a beautiful, true account of a boy being a boy, in a terrible place at the worst possible time. It speaks of steadfast love and innocence amidst grave indifference and unspeakable cruelty. Moonbeam Children's Book Award Winner 2011 Gold Medal Winner: Multicultural Non‐Fiction ‐ Young Adult
