November 2015 As I said last month we are well into the silly season with a Writers Festival per week, and more book launches and Awards being announced. The positive side of trade allows us to do our employment roster through until February next year. As well as how we get the new titles and promotional plans to market. We have agreed to make it a year of 13 new title catalogues as this way we can bring out our “Summer Vacation Book Guide” - this will include new titles that missed the cut-off for November. The catalogues are an event within themselves and are backed up by one page per title versions on the iPad for those of us who aid the sell in with the iPad. Our new title catalogues have a print price of almost $40,000 per year plus the compilation charges and then the cost of the meta data entry. To get the samples to the sales people is a cost as well. We don’t estimate the aggregate of these costs – however I would like to earn that as a salary. Why do it? Well our lead group still think there is a place for the system that has served for years and this is the start of face to face sell-ins and the fun / task of taking new titles to market. I had the pleasure in the last week or so of visiting some of New Zealand’s best bookshops. I tend to like the stories from shops like The Women’s Bookshop in Ponsonby, Unity in Wellington and Scorpio in Christchurch. The owners of these best bookshops stand side by side with their staff and their craft. If you have not ventured to the shaky Isles then do so and take in the Bookman’s tour of these shops. The Political stuff. GST on imports. Fine, although the tax raised is very likely to be spent on GST enforcement for those exporters to Australia to be GST enabled. The impact of GST on imports is only part of our pricing imbalance; the other determinants being the suggested retail price by local publishers as well as the cliff effect of our currency. I also buy books and with my passion for travel I avoid buying travel guides locally due to the extreme retail prices we have to trade under. By the way I would expect NZ to follow the Australian Government's lead on taxes being asserted on all purchases. I am awaiting direction from Treasury on the new GST rules on the Customs Tax which was about $165.00 at $1000 net on imports.
Words from the Wise Part 2 - The Book Council - I read the plea from the local industry to the Government on what is going on with this grant. Don’t hold your breath is all I can say for the detail to appear. Part 3 - Computer viruses and emails destined to ruin your business. I don’t understand why our leaders are not more proactive on how to defend us against these highly costly germs. The savings to industry would be enormous. Good books Good books need generous authors, generous booksellers and a media flow-through for interaction of demand and supply. I think this is occurring with two of our books - Solomon’s Noose (author Steve Harris) and Bleed (author Bill Williams). The publisher of Solomon’s Noose (David Tenembaum / Melbourne Books) is flying Steve Harris back to Tasmania this weekend for an interview during Tasmanian Writers Festival with Richard Fidler. Steve & David were there last week with Events at both Fullers & Petrarchs. Next month Steve goes to UK for more media. The first Events for Bleed have resulted in a few hundred books being sold - this gives a real Fillip to us all and the courage to keep pushing this story. On the weekend we get a wonderful piece in the Good Weekend magazine. The story is very well written and I suspect shortlist material for non-fiction prizes next year; in fact both books are candidates. In the case of Bleed it is self published - but with a difference. Great design, great editorial acumen, exceptional value for money and the publicist we wanted to complete the process. Off to Readings tonight for the Melbourne launch of Bleed, then ACT on Sunday to haul the book mail to the shops and Galleries. And give me a chance to finish reading Bleed. Best wishes, read lots and sell more DJ

Author Information Graham Simpson Journalist, author and music historian Graham Simpson spent seven years as editor of Australia’s longest-running weekly music publication, Juke, and several years as a radio commentator. He has worked as Australian correspondent for the Hong Kong Standard and for London’s World Entertainment News Network, was editor of both The Video Age and National Tattler, and has been a metropolitan daily newspaper columnist. Graham spent 19 years as a writer and interviewer with Australia’s leading radio syndication company MCM. Graham has worked with The Seekers since 1993 over which time he has designed and authored souvenir programmes for all of The Seekers tours, and sleeve notes for Seekers albums since 1995. The group’s CD box set Treasure Chest, featuring Graham’s interview with The Seekers, was certified gold. In 1994, Graham’s best-selling authorised biography The Judith Durham Story - Colours Of My Life - was published for the first time. It has been republished five times since. He later edited From The Word Go - Forty Years Of Network Ten Melbourne, by Mal Walden. Christopher Patrick In 2008, Brisbane-based author Christopher Patrick published his first book, the critically acclaimed ABBA: Let The Music Speak. Four years in the making, it is a 400-page world-first, an armchair guide to the song writing and recording genius of the Swedish super-group. Christopher provided valuable insights into ABBA's musical legacy for the 2013 Swedish-produced documentary "ABBA - Dancing Queen", which examined the creation of ABBA's most popular song. A music graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium, Christopher's professional career has included thirty years as cellist with the Queensland Pops Orchestra, numerous Australian pop and classical recordings and live performances with artists such as Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart and the Electric Light Orchestra. In 2013, Christopher was invited to write the sleeve notes for Judith Durham's 70th birthday CD, "The Platinum Album". "The Seekers A-Z" is Christopher's second literary work and his first collaboration with pop historian Graham Simpson.

November 2015 This is the world’s first ‘Enseeklopedia’ - a treasure trove of stories, music analysis and rare memorabilia. Moreover, it is a long overdue salute to Australia’s Fab Four and their enduring recording catalogue. In tracing contemporary Australian music, history will recall the four young Melbourne musicians who started the ball rolling internationally for every big name Australian artist who would follow in their footsteps. Folk and gospel group The Seekers - featuring the golden voice of Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley - set sail for the UK in 1964 on a working holiday, totally unaware of the global fame and fortune that lay ahead. Chart-topping hits, gold and platinum record awards, sold-out tours and record-breaking crowds in the 60s, and again in the reunion years since 1993. In this publishing first, renowned Australian authors Christopher Patrick (ABBA: Let The Music Speak) and Graham Simpson (The Judith Durham Story – Colours Of My Life) have joined forces to produce the first-ever Seekers coffee table book – an in-depth and highly informative look at the recording history of Australia’s first supergroup. Their forensic analysis of every song The Seekers recorded in the 50 years between 1963 and 2013 sits comfortably with peeks behind the scenes, never-before-revealed facts, fascinating trivia, and a kaleidoscope of photos and memorabilia much of it never seen before. With a good tour guide, you see so much more when you know what it is you're looking at; Chris has approached The Seekers' song list from a musician's perspective, undressing every song the group ever recorded to reveal the vocal and instrumental craft at play. Graham has brought to the coffee table his penchant for fascinating Seekers minutiae, and an archive of memorabilia gathered from all over the world over five decades. The Seekers were the very first group to put Australia on the international music map, and they will be forever known for knocking The Kinks, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones off the top of the UK charts, and The Monkees from the Number One spot on the American charts with their global phenomenon, the Academy Award-nominated song “Georgy Girl.” They were clean-cut, clean-living Aussie youths when the rollercoaster began; their music was wholesome and free of gimmicks. The Seekers came, sang and conquered in the Sixties, yet the footprint they left on the international music map is as indelible today as it was half a century ago. If you have a favourite Seekers musical memory, it’s in this book. If you want to know who played what; or how they got that ‘sound’; or who Pierrot and Columbine were this is the book for you. If you like the photography and artwork of the Sixties, then you’ll love the images captured by some of the top pop photographers of the era, and the many obscure record covers from every corner of the globe. Why were there two different versions of several songs; how did a sad song called “Downhearted Blues” turn into the charttopper “A World Of Our Own”?; and who sneezes at the end of the 1967 recording of “Myra”? It’s in here.

A hardback, case bound visual art book showing the art of alt/indie music in Australia 1976-1980 in 7'' record sleeves, this reference book gives a critical review of the packaging of Australian Music. The book contains the great indie/alternative 7'' vinyl covers that were either financed by the bands themselves or by the ground breaking, risk taking record businesses of the time. These records have the story behind them, how the artwork came to be, as told by the artist/musician. During this period Australia was the third largest supplier of English speaking musical repertoire to the World. Australian music was unique in the world and at its most popular on the world stage. This book shows how that music was packaged and gives the story behind the artwork from the musician and artists that created it. PRODUCT 45 focuses on the period 1976-1980. How the music was packaged as told by the artist/musician, the story behind the artwork. 1976 was a major turning point in our Music History. It is a logical time to start this book, looking at the creative way music was packaged. The graphic design, the printing processes and delivery of product into the market place. Up until this time the music market was the exclusive domain of major music companies but 1976 was the year of change, where musicians started to do it themselves, to record, package and deliver their music directly to their fans. It was small scattered groups of like-minded individuals who had the DIY mentality, and they were in every Australian capital city and scattered through the countryside. These creative minds just wanted to get their music recorded and heard, hand delivering it to their fan base. The punters that went to their gigs or replied the ads in the fledgling music press. This music was packaged in hand made, low budget paper sleeves that were spectacular. Without the constraints of the record company art departments, these releases were genuinely creative. While produced on a shoe string budget but with many hands, it was creativity to the maximum. Nothing was off limits, the language used, the photos taken and the variety of print process used, whether hand drawn and hand coloured, one colour photocopy or screen printed onto a variety of textured papers and boards. Some covers were glued, some just folded. People made use of what they could get their hands on to. The creativity in the packaging of music was as great as the music within. Foreword written by Stuart Coupe. Two introductions written by Toby Creswell and Bruce Milne. Book jacket cover designed by Phil Brophy. Contibutions from Bruce Griffiths, Bob Short, Craig Regan, Daisy Bailey, Donald Roberston, Doug Thomas, Edwin Garlan, Fabian Byrne, Gavan Quinn, Glenn Terry, Glenno Smith, Graeme Regan, Jodi Adams, Keith Glass, Kim Salmon, Marek Urbanski, Ray Ahn, Roger Grierson, Scott Henthron, Steve Stavrakis, Virginia Muzik, Alan Bamford, Andy Groome, Bill Tolson, Bruce Cub Callaway, Clive Hodson, Dave Warner, Gil Mathews, John Willsteed, Judi Kuepper, Malcolm Baxter, Mick Harvey, Reg Mombasa, Rob Griffiths, Jeremy Fiebiger, Steve Braund, Ash Wednesday, Rod McLeod, Chane Chane, Stephen Cummings, Dare Jennings, Robbie Porrit, Robert McComb, Mark Taylor, John Needham, Deniz Tek and Warwick Gilbert. What’s a ‘Krome-Plated Yabbie’? Did the ‘Little Boy Lost’ ever get found? When ‘The Carnival is Over’, do you say ‘Ciao Baby?’ Was ‘Little Boy Sad’ ‘Living in a Child’s Dream?’ Who would answer the Royal Telephone?’ These and many other important questions are answered in this book. David N. Pepperell & Colin Talbot are two Rock & Roll writers who were there!...and they answer this most important question: What were the 100 Greatest Singles made by Australian artists in the 60’s? In the 1960's Australian Rock & Roll singles were as good as those made anywhere in the World. Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs' "Poison Ivy" even knocked the Beatles off the top of the charts when the Fab Four were touring here in 1964! John Lennon was so amazed he asked to meet Thorpe in person. This book attempts, for the task can only be attempted, to list the best 100 singles of that remarkable decade - the Sixties - by Australian artists. Looking at this list, every genre of music is represented - pop, country, soul, folk, instrumental, psychedelic, ballads - all that diversity which drives our interest in pop music and glues us to our radios and record players. We've tried to showcase the best, yet we expect there will always be some song that didn't make the cut that you the reader will regard as a glaring omission. Well, that's the way the turntable spins! Take a trip back to these classic records of the 60’s to listen once again and remember those heady times when long hair and short skirts changed the world. Author Information Colin (Tad) Talbot lived in a small town within sight of the magnificent Flinders Ranges. It was there in the early 1960s his massive transistor radio picked up distant broadcasts, from Sydney’s night DJ’s to short-wave transmissions from all over. Pop Music! Wow! Music changed his life, made life in the bush wonderful. Or at least bearable. In that little town, Colin and his schoolmates surrounded by the vistas of wheat, sheep & cattle, constantly talked of the latest pop music and sang the latest songs. They formed a band when he was 14 with Colin as singer...such a major disaster that he ended up a writer. From Copy Boy to Journalist he was soon bored senseless by the shipping news so he sought refuge writing about pop music from 1970 onwards. He was Pop Columnist for “The Australian” from 1973 and wrote for newspapers like “Nation Review” and magazines like “Planet”, “Go-Set”, “RAM” and counterculture newspapers like Richard Neville’s “Living Daylights”, and “The Digger”. He began a publishing company, (Outback Press) and worked as producer at Triple J (when it was just Double J). In 1977, “Colin Talbot’s Greatest Hits”, a collection of rock & roll writings published by Wild & Woolley, caused an epiphany that the Great Rock & Roll Days were Over! Pop had been and gone. Thus Colin wandered the pop wilderness in these Missing Years searching for Meaning. Then came The Realisation. The music of the Sixties would never die. Rock & roll would come and go but the Sixties would be forever. For he recalled that one afternoon in 1965 in the school football change sheds when he heard a fabulous rock version of “It Ain’t Necessarily So” on a tinny transistor and asked, “Who’s that?” The answer: Normie Rowe. Perhaps he’d just heard the Greatest Voice in Australian Rock & Roll. Australian music was alive and well. It would never die. Colin is a novelist, with four novels published and more coming and has co-written songs recorded by Stephen Cummings, Paul Grabowsky, Red Symons, Ross Wilson, Colin Hay & more and finally, after a lifetime in Rock, has written and produced his own songs on the WWW. Viva Pop Music! David N. Pepperell was born in 1945 in Adelaide but fortunately his parents immediately moved to Melbourne where he has lived ever since. On his fourth birthday said parents gave him a radio which started an obsession with pop music that has now lasted over 65 years. He sang in a band called the Boys, later the Union, in the mid 60's which did a lot of gigs but which could not have been said to have made it. Their lack of success is proved by the amazing sums being paid for their lone single "The Thump/The End" these days on Ebay. Along with Keith Glass he founded Australia's first Record Import Shop "Archie & Jughead's records" in 1971 and also commenced a career in Australian music media, writing for "Planet", "GoSet", "Nation Review", "Rolling Stone" and many others. He was a founding staff member at national pop magazine "Juke" and wrote a weekly column under the name "Doctor Pepper" a nickname he has been stuck with ever since. Feeling that singing was not his road to success he wrote a number of songs including "I Might be A Punk" recorded by Norman Gunston and "Primal Park" recorded by Ross Wilson with Mondo Rock but regrettably Show Biz success still eluded him.The beginning of community radio in Australia with 3RRR Melbourne saw him broadcasting on that station from the outset and continuing on and off for about twenty years. He has appeared as a guest commentator on many radio stations over the years and still writes the odd liner note and article on the music he loves, mostly from the period 1955 - 1975 which he regards as the Golden Age of Rock. These days he listens to endless records and reads every book on music he can get his hands on whilst bemoaning the state of current popular music. His pick for the best Australian single of the 1960's is "The Real Thing" by Russell Morris. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

Guns, drug money and the CIA... These were not your average bankers. This was not your average bank. In 1980, following the mysterious death of Australian merchant banker, Frank Hand, his New York-born partner, Michael Hand, brazenly ordered the destruction of the bank's records. Hand then disappeared from Sydney and hasn't been seen since. Among the ruins of the Nugan Hand global financial empire, investigators uncovered astonishing evidence of gunrunning, money laundering for drug traffickers and connections to the CIA. When the FBI and a Royal Commission failed to join the dots, those intimately involved with the case suspected a cover up. Brimming with chilling new evidence and powerful testimonies, Merchants of Menace cracks open the sensational Nugan Hand story and goes on the hunt for the world's most elusive corporate fugitive... The FBI integrated me on behalf of the Australians. The agents asked what I knew about the Nugan Hand bank and what happened to Frank Nugan. I said 'I don't know. But whatever it was, it was the lynchpin that started everything crumbling.' He kept saying, 'Do you know where Michael Hand is?' and I said, 'No' He said. 'Are you sure?' Finally I said to him, 'Look, why don't you ask the CIA in Langley Virginia and maybe they will tell you where he is, because they know.' I don't think they were really looking for Michael and they certainly weren't going to tell the Australian government where he was. - Douglas A Sapper III

More to the Story looks beyond negative media reports, political speeches and fear-mongering statistics to tell human stories of refugees and asylum seekers in Australia. Rosemary Sayer writes with empathy and humility of her interviews with refugees from Burma, Afghanistan and South Sudan. Together, they tell stories of persecution, violence and starvation; families separated for a time, or forever; the desperation of thousands in refugee camps, awaiting relocation under humanitarian programs; the perilous journeys by boat of those for whom waiting would have meant death; life in mandatory detention; and the challenges of starting over in Australia. None of these people chose to be refugees; all of them chose survival. A powerful, moving and inspiring account of human resilience that every Australian should read.
Author Information Rosemary Sayer is a former journalist, a business communications consultant and the biographer of Sir Gordon Wu, chairman of Hopewell Holdings, Hong Kong (The Man who Turned the Lights On) and Trevor Eastwood, former chairman and CEO of Wesfarmers Limited (The CEO, the Chairman and the Board). She teaches professional writing at Curtin University and is a board member of not‐for‐profit organisations supporting refugees (Edmund Rice Centre) and the arts (writingWA) in Western Australia. She has worked extensively throughout Australia and the Asia Pacific region, and currently lives in Perth with her husband, Terry Grose.

Born without the lower half of his left leg, young Don Elgin never considered himself disabled until he was in high school - and even then, he had to be convinced. His story, of a boy from the bush who battled the odds and finally stepped onto the podium as a medallist at the Sydney Paralympics, is one of absolute inspiration. Driven by an inherited sense of grit, determination and pure guts, Don overcomes an abundance of obstacles to rise to the top of the sporting heap. His life’s philosophy tells us that success is not a birthright - it's earned. If you’re likely to buy only one book this year, make sure it’s a ripper. Make it one about a boy from the bush who’s hell-bent on becoming an elite sportsman. Be sure it’s a true story, with ups and downs and plenty of fun times you can relate to. An inspiring insight into triumph over adversity probably won’t go astray either. The one book you should buy this year tells the true story of a boy with a couple of missing body-parts and a very naughty streak that gets him in and out of trouble with his parents, school teachers and the police on his journey to the peak of Paralympic athletic competition. The one book you should definitely buy this year is One Foot On The Podium, by Don Elgin (with Kevin Moloney). Don Elgin: One Foot On The Podium is not just the rags-to-riches story of a poor disabled boy who becomes an elite athlete. It’s a tell-all tale laced with his natural humour and just enough larrikinism to make him loveable. The way Don tells his story is the reason he’s one of the most entertaining and engaging speakers on the Australian circuit today.

Welcome to the world of The Grade Cricketer. Described as the most original voice in cricket, The Grade Cricketer represents the fading hopes and dreams of every ageing amateur sportsman. In this tell‐all ‘autobiography’, The Grade Cricketer describes his cricketing career with unflinching honesty and plenty of humour, in turn providing insights into the hyper‐masculine cricket ‘dressing room’. This one‐time junior prodigy is now experiencing the lean, increasingly existential years of adult cricket. Here, he learns quickly that one will need more than just runs and wickets to make it in the alpha‐dominated grade cricket jungle, where blokes like Nuggsy, Bruiser, Deeks and Robbo reign supreme. Through it all, The Grade Cricketer lays bare his deepest insecurities – his relationship with Dad, his fleeting romances outside the cricket club – and, in turn, we witness a gentle maturation; a slow realisation that perhaps, just maybe, there is more to life than hitting 50 not out in third grade and enjoying a few celebratory beers afterwards. Or is there? * * * The Grade Cricketer book is based upon the popular Twitter account, @gradecricketer, which has received critical acclaim for its frighteningly honest portrayal of amateur cricket. Now, the time has finally come for this middling amateur sportsman to tell his story in full. The beauty of The Grade Cricketer is he is more than a grade cricketer - he is every cricketer, from the park to the SCG. His insights into the game make people laugh mostly because they reflect every cricketer's unspoken convictions. We all live vicariously through him, as he does us. - Ed Cowan, Australian Test Cricketer and Fox Sports presenter The Grade Cricketer has taken us so far inside a district club dressing room that you feel like a locker. Ligaments could not be closer to the bone than some of his observations. - Kerry O’Keeffe, Former Australian Test Cricketer and media personality Having an arm like a leg and constantly taunted that the batter down the local fish and chip shop was better than me, I found comfort from The Grade Cricketer that your relevance at a Cricket Club was not just on the field. His guidance has changed my life forever, and also my technique on the leg side. - Ryan Fitzgerald, Former AFL player, host of Nova 969 Breakfast and panelist on The Back Page The Grade Cricketer embodies the hopes and dreams of every dedicated, hard working club cricketer - except those that involve actual dedication and hard work. - Richard Hinds, Sports Journalist, News Ltd. Regular Panellist: The Offsiders

The Miller's Guide has settled pub debates on racing and sport for more than a century. The 800-page book contains place getters for all Australian Group races as well as thousands of sporting results dating back to the 1880s. This sporting annual has been associated with the 'Sport of Kings' since the early 1880s when racehorse owner, breeder and bookmaker J. J. Miller printed his first guide to aid punters betting on the Caufield and Melbourne Cups. Initially called J. J. Miller's Sporting Pamphlet and later the J. J. Miller's Sporting Annual, this publication came to be known to its many readers as the Miller's Guide.

In 1896 a small group of Melbourne’s first women doctors opened a makeshift hospital in a borrowed church hall. They wanted to give ‘poor women the opportunity of being treated by their own sex, and in the presence of women only’. In the first few months they were overwhelmed by large numbers of outpatients. Leaders of Melbourne’s suffragist movement came to their aid. They asked all women in the colony of Victoria to donate a shilling so the doctors could have a building of their own – with wards and an operating theatre. Funds poured in, even though Victoria was in the middle of its worst depression. The Shilling Fund made enough money for the doctors to buy a building outright and fit it out as a hospital. The Queen Victoria Hospital was the only general hospital for women in Australia. It became a much loved Melbourne icon, but was forced to surrender the ‘for women, by women’ vision of its founders in the 1950s and 1960s. The Victorian government closed the Queen Vic at the end of 1986. Women’s organisations started a heroic struggle to keep three towers on the Queen Vic site in the hands of the women of Victoria. They salvaged a single tower from a whole city block of hospital buildings. That tower now houses the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre. This is the story of the hospital, the campaign and the tower. A fascinating story about women with a common goal, who achieved more than they thought possible, and built skills, lasting friendships and respect. ‐ Lecki Ord, architect and first woman Lord Mayor of Melbourne Helen Macrae has taken a feminist's forensic look at the turbulent and immensely proud history of the Queen Victoria Hospital. A riveting read. - Kay Setches, Minister in the Cain/Kirner Governments I want to put this book into the hands of all the young women I know. - Christa Momot, Executive Officer, Woor-Dungin Inc A true story of two groups of strong, brave women, a century apart, who fought for a safe space for their sisters. Helen Macrae deftly demonstrates that there is no end point – and always the struggle. - Lyn Mckenzie, GP and former Queen Vic doctor

Shortly before his death in 2014, an elderly man brought his publisher friend a crumpled purple folder filled with type‐ written pages. Cleaning the Stables he called it: a selection of stories, poems and a recipe that he didn’t want left behind. In this posthumous collection we are given a feast of mostly unpublished treasures from the great literary life of Morris Lurie. Written in the wry and ironic style he was celebrated for, these pieces are sometimes odd, always clever, and at times profoundly moving as they give us insight into a man who had a truly unique way of interpreting and writing about the world around him. One of the most significant Australian writers of his generation. – Peter Pierce, editor of the Cambridge History of Australian Literature A sharp, rare writer with an acerbic wit. – Kevin Childs, The Guardian
Author Information Morris Lurie (1938 – 2014) has written more than thirty books including Flying Home, selected by the National Book Council as one of the ten best Australian books of its decade; The Twenty‐Seventh Annual African Hippopotamus Race, voted by the schoolchildren of Victoria their favourite young storybook by an Australian author; and the Bicentennial Award‐winning autobiography, Whole Life. Morris Lurie was the recipient of the Patrick White Award in 2006.

This is a true story of life and love in some of the wildest and most isolated places on earth - the lightstations of Bass Strait and Tasmania. Before their automation, Australia’s remote island and onshore lights were manned by lightkeepers and their families. Foul weather, misadventure and supply problems were offset by incredible natural beauty, camaraderie and a unique lifestyle that no longer exists in the modern world. Covering twenty-two years from 1967 to 1989 and touching upon six lightstations and nine lighthouses Living with Jezebel takes us from the age of kerosene lamps to solar power, providing historical insight as well as a rollicking good yarn of one family’s life of adventure, love, heartbreak and endurance. Marlene Levings (née Harper) was born into a large, boisterous Launceston family in 1933. In 1964 she met the love of her life, Allen Levings. They married in 1967 and began a life on remote Tasmanian lightstations. Two children and many adventures later, Marlene was appointed light keeper on King Island. Following retirement from the service in 1989, Marlene and Allen moved to Swansea, Tasmania, where Marlene still lives today.

This richly varied account of a life spanning seven decades is more than a memoir about success in business. From the author’s early years growing up in a medium sized town in Western Victoria during and immediately after the Second World War it traces a career that culminates in a high profile in Australian sporting and corporate life during some of the wine industry’s most turbulent years. In between there are tales of the inevitable move to the city and the trials and tribulations of life in the big smoke, university studies, playing for Carlton Football Club, national service and marriage at twenty with fatherhood following soon after. Ray writes vividly of an incident‐packed career embracing teaching, AFL umpiring, the pharmaceutical industry and the eventual move into a senior position with a leading winemaker. Along the way there are tumultuous times involving marriage break‐up, single parenting and a fresh start on family life in bringing two families together. Mid‐life crisis leads to despair, departure and an eventual reunion with the wine industry. The subsequent three decades of controversial top level involvement in the wine industry is an exhilarating journey of boosting profits, takeovers (and being taken over), mergers, bitter corporate battles, disasters and triumphs. With this comes numerous directorships, including seven years as chairman of St Kilda Football Club. It is a full and candid account of an incident‐filled life that provides a lively and engaging read.
Author Information From an early life in the family’s bakery in a Victorian country town, Ray King rose to become one of the biggest movers and shakers in the Australian corporate world. During a thirty-year, often controversial career that began in 1970 he brought a fresh way of thinking to a wine industry steeped in tradition. He introduced to the world the now ubiquitous bag in box wine carton, initiated takeovers and mergers during the wine industry’s most stormy years and lifted an ailing Mildara Wines Limited into the global wine industry’s third largest profit earner. He saw early playing days with Carlton Football Club, spent a number of years as an AFL central umpire, won four Australian Masters Road Cycling Championships and later served seven years as chairman of directors at St Kilda Football Club. He lives in Melbourne with Dawn, his wife of almost fifty years. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

From the authors of the bestseller The Rugmaker of Mazar-e-Sharif comes their latest book, The Honey Thief. A superb collection of spellbinding tales from Afghanistan that portray a vivid landscape of hardship and brotherhood, catastrophes and miracles. These tales of peasants, poisoners and kings leap into life to reveal the rich storytelling traditions of Afghanistan. The beekeeper said to the boy: "Abbas, I have a question for you. The question is this: can a bee catch a cold?" Abbas smiled. "Can a bee catch a cold? No. It is impossible, Sir." "It is not impossible. A bee can catch a cold." "How do you know?" "I have seen a bee sneezing." "No!" said Abbas. Then before he could stop himself, he said, "God will punish you for telling lies!" Ahmad Hussein laughed. He was teasing Abbas, but when a boy was as full of sorrow as this one, perhaps teasing could help. The mystery and wonder of Afghanistan comes to life in these tales of men who converse with bees and bears; of horseshoe bats in flights that blot out the sun, and of blackbirds that bring golden apples to earth from heaven. The sorrow of this extraordinary land is here too in the story of Abdul Kaliq, the king-killer, who ends his life on a scaffold in Kabul, and of Majid the Madman who turns to music for solace when his children die of plague. Other tales tell of an aged wolf who proves to a shepherd boy that he is the most intelligent creature on earth; of Proud Nadia, courted with a copy of Huckleberry Finn; and of the master poisoner Nightfall, who creates a cookbook of enchantments. Whether the tale is of wolves or wizards, The Honey Thief conveys in writing of surprising tenderness what it is like to grow up in a land of bloodshed and brotherhood, of miracles and catastrophes. "I have seen a bee sneezing," said Ahmad Hussein. "When I said, 'God bless you!' the bee said to me, 'You say, 'God bless you', Ahmad Hussein, and yet look where you have placed our house! You have placed it where the cold wind comes across the field!' It was true. I had placed his house where the cold wind troubled him. So now I am more careful. Now I place the beehives away from the cold, and away from the afternoon sun."
Author Information Najaf Mazari fled upheaval in Afghanistan in 2001 and made his way to Australia, where he now lives with wife, Hakeema, and his daughter, Maria. He is a successful businessman with a shop in Melbourne's antique precinct, selling traditional Afghan rugs. He is deeply involved in creating a better climate for asylum-seekers in Australia and in charity activities that provide medical and educational assistance to some of the poorest villages in Afghanistan. Each year, Najaf sponsors an Afghan Evening of traditional song, dance and cuisine that highlights the achievements of Afghans in Australia. In 2008 Najaf co-authored the extraordinarily successful book, The Rugmaker of Mazar-e-Sharif, which eloquently tells the story of his journey as a refugee from Afghanistan to Australia. He followed that up in 2011 with another Robert Hillman collaboration, The Honey Thief, an exquisite collection of stories in the tradition of Afghan folktales.

Philip Freier has headed the Anglican Church in Melbourne since the end of 2007, and was elected Primate of Australia in 2014. It has been a difficult few decades for all public institutions, not least the Anglican Church, in keeping people interested and involved and in building and maintaining trust. So from the first the new Archbishop set out to listen -to people in the pews, people in shopping centres and public places, and to church and civic leaders. One pathway has been a series of public conversations in the Edge theatre at Federation Square on topics of public importance, ranging from climate change to toxic childhood, from asylum seekers to the Indigenous intervention, from political process to mental health. He wants people to understand the issues and feel empowered, rather than feeling irrelevant or merely delegating to experts. Guests have been as diverse as Malcolm Fraser and Michael Leunig, Julian Burnside and Noni Hazlehurst. As the number of conversations approaches 50, this book features edited extracts of 15 of them, canvassing issues of abiding importance and interest. Edited and introduced by Barney Zwartz and featuring cartoons by Ron Tandberg.
Author Information Dr Philip Freier grew up in a working class suburb of Brisbane, graduated in science and taught at a remote Indigenous community. Becoming an Anglican priest, he served in Queensland parishes and then as Bishop of the Northern Territory. His qualifications include a PhD from James Cook University, Master of Educational Studies from Newcastle University, Bachelor of Divinity from the Melbourne College of Divinity, Bachelor of Applied Science from the Queensland Institute of Technology and a Diploma in Education from the University of Queensland. He is married to Joy, and has two sons, Michael and David. Barney Zwartz is a senior fellow with the Centre for Public Christianity and former religion editor for the Age. He has held numerous positions in journalism and has written broadly on classical music and opera. He has been given peace awards by interfaith groups.

Based on the author’s own experience working with global and regional brands in China, the book outlines common problems and issues to be aware of, when sourcing in China. Many companies unknowingly expose themselves to risks that can in fact be managed. Red Flag provides insights to helpful frameworks and risk management methods and if the principles highlighted in the book are applied consistently they will help mitigate supply chain risk and ultimately help build the reputation of the business and its brand and products. How do women defy the odds and get their careers back on track after a break? How do women manage the mummy mafia at the school gate? Is there a motherhood penalty? Can women really have it all - a successful career and a rewarding family life? Does overseas experience really accelerate your career in Australia? How do you recreate your career after a setback? In Career Interrupted fourteen high‐achieving women talk openly about their challenges in carving out a successful career after a break. These women come from all walks of life — from battlers to privileged backgrounds, from small business to big corporations, from large corporates to small business, from professional services to the community sector. Several women had children and talk candidly about what it’s like to be in the throes of mother guilt and come out the other side; some are expatriates who returned to Australia to rebuild their career, yet others had to re‐ establish their career after a misstep. These stories are interwoven with the latest research from thought leaders around the obstacles and pitfalls in leaving the workforce for a time, and include practical and proven strategies to overcome these hurdles. Career Interrupted contributes to the discussion and debate in business and the broader community about how to develop workplaces where the contribution of everyone, including women, is recognised, nurtured and optimised. It explores the shared experiences of women who have had to navigate a break in their career and provides a beacon for other women about to embark on a similar journey.

Michele Gennoe is a woman on a mission… She is passionate about helping leaders to be more mindful so they can live both meaningful and profitable lives by following the 7 Steps, Purpose, Passion, Pathways, People, Prosperity, Pausing and Presence, to be a mindful Leader. As human beings we are always trying to understand why we are here. Finding a Purpose for our lives and translating that into a Passion is what adds many layers of richness of experience. As leaders we are constantly making decisions and refining our Pathways to simplify our decision-making processes. We want to be inspirational and move with People we are leading towards a worthwhile vision, creating Prosperity for ourselves and others as we do so. This journey is enhanced by Pausing to renew ourselves with moments of mindfulness. All these elements would then combine into what we put forward through our Presence as the ‘brand me’ of our leadership style. These are the same human elements that philosophers and poets throughout the history of mankind have been discussing and debating in their own ways.
Author Information Michele Gennoe provides Mindful Leadership coaching, mentoring, consulting and training services to leaders and organisations who are looking to become more aware, more mindful, about how they are not only leading their organisation but also in how they are living their lives. Founded in 2007 as On Purpose Consulting by CEO Michele Gennoe this idea of assisting leaders to connect to who they are as a person so that they were not just better leaders but all round better human beings has been a passion of Michele’s for many years. In working with CEO’s and senior managers over a 27 year career path Michele saw that time and again leaders turned into people that were not happy because of the pressures of time, money and circumstance.

Available Now 1918: Lord Howe Island, off Australia’s eastern coast. An American, Paul De Martinet, arrives to paint the sub tropical outpost’s vanishing birds. Home to an insular community, jealousy and suspicion lurk not far below the surface of what appears to be an otherwise carefree community. On expeditions into the island’s mysterious and beautiful kentia palm forest he is accompanied by Margaret Sleap, a gifted local gardener. Re‐animating vanished birds in paint, they find each specimen resonates with its own deeper story of loss and belonging. Together they map out the aching territory of love until one day, as tensions surface, they are the victims of a savage attack that sets in motion their own choices of survival.
Author Information Russell Kelly, a former editor of Island magazine, has written several short stories. Love Bird is his first novel. He is a native of Hobart, Tasmania.

Set against the backdrop of World War 2, the wealthy Belleville family must face the tragedies and heartbreak that war brings to the doorstep of their grand Australian home. There is Julia, headstrong and on the cusp of womanhood, who falls desperately in love with an American Army officer against her family’s wishes. For Julia, it is life‐changing. For her family, it is a secret they swear to keep forever but can they? Half a world away, her brother Richard is fighting for Britain, flying dangerous missions across the Channel knowing that the next mission could be his last. He meets the beautiful Catherine Cavendish whose aristocratic parents disapprove strongly of the brash young Australian officer. Is he destined to find happiness with Catherine or will he be haunted forever by, Jane, the woman he left behind? Brought up in Richard’s shadow, William Belleville resents the popularity of his older brother and when there is an unexpected death in the family, it is William who attempts to usurp his older brother’s authority and take charge of the family fortune. Into this mix, comes James Fitzroy, handsome and charming, who sets his sights on Julia. But can he remain faithful to just one woman or will his roving eye mean more trouble for the family. And what of the matriarch Elizabeth Belleville, whose preference for her elder son is well known, but who must endure the fecklessness of her husband, Francis, and the disappointment of a failing marriage. What betrayals are revealed and secrets unravelled as the family adjusts to a post‐war world where nothing is certain and the shifting sands threaten to engulf them all? J Mary Masters has created a compelling story of a family whose lives are entwined in a web of secrets and lies that bind them together until one by one the secrets are painfully and ruthlessly revealed. Author Information J Mary Masters (Judith) was born the youngest of four children to a farming family in rural Queensland, Australia. Imagine, if you can, a farmhouse, set in the hills, the elevation means that the winters are chilly, even though they are near the Tropic of Capricorn. Often a dense fog settles across the landscape. There are stories of buried treasure from days past and sightings of strange lights. The house is lit by weak flickering lights; outside is complete darkness except for the moonlit nights. There are no other houses, except one, within sight. It is this upbringing that fires her imagination and fosters her early interest in storytelling. Life, in the form of marriage and work intervenes, even though her writing ambition remains. Having successfully launched a business magazine in Australia and run it for many years, it is only much later that she turns back to her first love - writing - and completes her first novel, The House of Secrets - Julia's Story, which is book one of the Belleville family saga. Other books are in progress, including Books 2 and 3 of the Belleville saga, as well as a collection of short stories under the title: The Women We Are. Judith is married to Peter. They live in the bayside suburbs of Brisbane, Queensland. She is a member of the Queensland Writers' Centre and the Australian Society of Authors. She is passionate about the rights of women and the environment. Her favourite book series is the Poldark series by Winston Graham, which was the inspiration for her own three-book Belleville family saga. Following a long creative practice of the sonnet (La Leçon d'Otilia, 1995), Anonymous of Troy inaugurates a new exploration of doubleness and overlay in terms of place, time and feeling, sustained by an equal doubleness in terms of form and language. The scene is Çanakkale, Turkey, facing Gelibolu on the other shore of the Dardanelles. But Gallipoli is a piece of ANZAC peering through the mirror of Port Jackson. The scene is Abydos facing Sestos, where Hero is still waiting for Leander. But the scene is also Truva, facing the infinite a few miles south, where Johnny Anadolu got the better of Achilles Johnson. The worldwide scene is then, thousands of years ago, as primitive as Parramatta today, the girl of both times will recognize herself in the TV commercial. Isolettric verse, sound play, anagrams, are cadenced to protect modernity against its ageing. "Coste’s novel Days in Sydney is a work demanding certain critical acclaim. Bilingual (…), in direct touch with Australian creative writing, it brings to the latter a contribution of the highest distinction." - Robert Pickering "The poems are very accomplished. (…) One doesn't usually encounter such a range of learning in poems these days and yours manage to be highly evocative, too, drawing upon classical themes in a modern setting." - Paul Kane
Author Information Didier Coste was born in 1946 and migrated from Belgium to Australia in 1973. Although Sydney is the place he likes to call his hometown, he has taught and lived on all five continents. He is presently an Emeritus Professor of Comparative Literature, based in Montreal. His published literary work encompasses the genres of the novel, diaries, short story, drama and poetry. A professional literary translator from English, Spanish, and Catalan into French, and from French into English, he received the Halperine Kaminsky Grand Prize in 1977. He published Days in Sydney, a bilingual novel in 2005. Coste's poetry insists on location and uses all the resources of its languages, from irony to enchantment, to deflect the course of one's otherness. Some of his latest work was published in Southerly (2007) Po&sie (2012 ) and Muse India (2014) and is being translated into Spanish and Hindi. Work like this takes no prisoners. One either accedes right away to the energies and images one is confronted with, or one gets left behind. The poems are seldom explicitly contextualised, and he often elects not to invest them with the familiarising cues of emotion. Sometimes only the event, the imaginative journey, is retained - as if to suggest that strangeness is pre-eminent, and affect accidental or secondary. Hammial, moreover, understands that the question of what we should feel about anything is much more difficult than we normally allow (it is one of the discomfiting things about his verse).
Author Information
Philip Hammial is an Australian poet, publisher, editor, artist and art curator. He has a long list of achievements in writing, publishing and sculpting. His achievements include twenty-four collections of poetry, thirty solo sculpture exhibitions, and acting as the director/curator of The Australian Collection of Outsider Art, twenty-six exhibitions of Australian Outsider Art in five countries. Hammial's significance to Australian poetry has been recognised by the Australia Council, which awarded him a Senior Writer's Fellowship in 1996, an Established Writer's Fellowship in 2004 and the Nancy Keesing Studio at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2009.

On Sunday June 30 1867, three young boys went missing into bushland surrounding the Australian goldmining town of Daylesford. The ensuing search would involve the whole community. Local businesses were closed for days. A large reward was offered by the Government and matched by the local borough. But all efforts came to nought. Worst fears were confirmed on September 14 when the boys' bodies were discovered in the hollow bole of a forest tree. A sad and significant episode it was, yet only part of the compelling story of Benjamin Burman, the father of one of the boys and the central character of this novel. D begins in Canada, in the winter of 1834, when Private Benjamin Burman is on the run to America. But the British Army does not suffer deserters. It hunts down their man, tries, shackles and imprisons him in a creaking hulk on Portsmouth Harbour, then banishes him to Van Diemen's Land. There he is assigned as gentleman's servant to George Frankland, surveyor‐general (and host to Charles Darwin on his visit to Hobart Town), and ultimately granted a pardon. Yet though Benjamin's sentence is over, his punishment is not done, for he is forever to be reminded of his disgrace by a thick black tattoo. It takes the biggest tragedy of his life to set him free. (Today, Benjamin Burman lies in an unmarked grave beneath an expanse of lank grass at Daylesford cemetery, some forty metres from the grave of the three lost boys).

The thrilling conclusion to the Crystal Doors trilogy finds cousins Gwen and Vic and their three friends forging the magical Ring of Might and defending all the worlds beyond the crystal doors in their final battle against the dark sage, Azric. When their friend Sharif is called back home by his father, the Sultan, Gwen, Vic and their companions travel to the flying city of Irrakesh only to find that the Sultan is dying, with Sharif the next in line to the throne. Before he can choose between duty and destiny, Irrakesh is attacked and the city is taken hostage by the dark wizard’s monstrous winged army. In their previous battles, the companions faced Azric by land and sea; now they take to the skies for the climactic showdown with the evil wizard and all of his dark forces.

Back from the dead … and back on the case! Even being murdered doesn’t keep a good detective down, and in the Unnatural Quarter - inhabited by ghosts, vampires, werewolves, mummies, and all sorts of creatures that go bump (or thud) in the night - a zombie PI fits right in. Dan Chambeaux, a.k.a. “Shamble,” solves a string of madcap cases with his ghost girlfriend Sheyenne, his Best Human Friend Officer Toby McGoohan, and his firebrand lawyer partner Robin Deyer. Working Stiff contains seven cases from the files of Chambeaux & Deyer Investigations. Dan Shamble has to solve the mystery of a stolen deck of fortune-telling cards and the undeath-defying feats of a vampire trapeze artist, finds himself sealed in a coffin in the back of a truck with no idea where he’s being taken, and is even hired by Santa Claus to find his lost “naughty and nice” list. Being trapped in an unbreakable monster-proof crypt, deciphering a string of mysterious zombie graffiti, investigating the murder of a costumed fan at a science fiction convention where the monsters are the normal attendees, or tracking down a kidnapped hellhound for legendary vigilante werewolf cop Hairy Harry - it’s all in a day’s work for Dan Shamble, Zombie PI.
Ever since the Big Uneasy unleashed vampires, werewolves, and other undead denizens on the world, it’s been hell being a detective - especially for zombie PI Dan Chambeaux. Taking on the creepiest of cases in the Unnatural Quarter with a human lawyer for a partner and a ghost for a girlfriend, Chambeaux redefines “dead on arrival.” But just because he was murdered doesn’t mean he’d leave his clients in the lurch. Besides, zombies are so good at lurching. Now he’s back from the dead and back in business—with a caseload that’s downright unnatural. A resurrected mummy is suing the museum that put him on display. Two witches, victims of a curse gone terribly wrong, seek restitution from a publisher for not using “spell check” on its magical tomes. And he’s got to figure out a very personal question: who killed him? For Dan Chambeaux, it’s all in a day’s work. (Still, does everybody have to call him “Shamble”?) Funny, fresh, and irresistible, this cadaverous caper puts the PI in RIP … with a vengeance.
The prequel novella to Kevin J. Anderson's international bestselling space opera Saga of the Seven Suns, is based on his 2004 graphic novel Veiled Alliances from Wildstorm/DC Comics. The origin of the green priests on Theroc, the forst Roamer skymining operations on a gas‐giant planet, the discovery of the Klikiss robots entombed in an abandoned alien city, the initial Ildrian expedition to Earth, the rescue of the generation ship Burton and the tragedy that leads to sinister breeding experiments. Veiled Alliances is an excellent starting point for readers new to the Saga, as well as an unforgettable adventure for fans of the series.

Magick is the birthright of every child in Arkadia. Power defines a person’s name, their skill, their destiny. Brin Menderson is different. Even the simplest spells do nothing for him and he is starting to fear that he might not have magick at all. Little does he know that there are those in the kingdom who would see an end to peace and order; an end to the golden age of magick. They believe in a prophecy, an ancient rhyme about a child foretold to end the kings rule and bring dragons back to the starless sky. Brin is about to learn that having no magick might just make him the most important person in all the land. Heralds the coming of a strong new voice in Australian fantasy. A compellingly readable tale. His hero may not have magick but McKenzie does. – Justin Woolley, author of A Town Called Dust
Author Information
Born just before the ‘80s began T.B McKenzie grew up in South Gippsland Victoria, where boys either surfed or played football. He did neither and, as this was a time before the Internet, he found his escape in books. Somehow he missed the boat on Tolkien but discovered instead the works of Lloyd Alexander, Terry Pratchett and Ursula Le-Guin, who all had a lot to say about things people seemed to have forgotten. He never looked back and ever since his first story - written in grade four about a monster, a sword, and a hero - he knew he wanted to be a writer. He lives now with his wife and young son in Melbourne, where he makes money to pay the bills as an art teacher and every now and then finds the time to write another chapter.

Two beautiful traditional Scottish fairy tales, The Selkie Bride and In the Kingdom of the Seals, are brought to enchanting and haunting new life by two creators who are themselves eerily linked to the magical world of the shape‐shifting selkies, who are seals in the water and humans on land. For Kate's ancestors were the McPhees, who, legend says, are descended from the union of Dougal McPhee and his melancholy selkie bride, while Fiona's McDonald ancestors, lairds of the Western Isles, have a strange connection to the McPhees as well, a connection she only discovered while working on the book! 'The tales, told by an author with an obvious talent for folklore, would make an excellent choice for young readers looking for a unique alternative to standard titles, and would be a beautiful introduction to the rich world of folktales.' Daisy the Dummy Fairy has a very special job to do. When children grow big enough to give away their dummies, she flutters into their house at night to collect them, leaving every child a surprise to find in the morning! Daniel has just turned two and is ready to give away his dummies ... What will happen when he meets Daisy the Dummy Fairy?
Author Information About the Author Leisa Papa majored in Communications and Sociology at university, and went on to work in sales and marketing for 15 years. She found her new calling once she became a mother, and now spends her time in sunny Brisbane, Australia, with her husband, son and daughter. The character of Daisy came to life when Leisa’s son Daniel was two and half years old, and Leisa penned this story to remove the distress from the process of fading out the dummy, making it a fun adventure instead. About the Illustrator Karen is a freelance illustrator and designer living in Brisbane, Australia, with her husband and two children. Karen grew up in beautiful New Zealand, where as soon as she could hold a pencil, she was drawing and colouring. These days (when not basking in the sun with her two soppy cats), Karen can be found squirrelled away in her art studio, illustrating picture books and educational material for school children. Karen’s other passion is creating the art and design for postage stamps from all over the world.

ROOOARRR! HISSSS! CHOMP! It’s toothy and hairy and terrifying! It’s waiting under the flap to Nip, Bite and Sting! A touchy‐feely, lift‐the‐flap book for early childhood.
Author Information Born in Sydney, Charlie Olsson worked as a boy on his family’s sheep farm and quickly found a love of this environment and the delicacy of nature. This instilled a lifelong interest in farming and the manufacturing of products in animal health and welfare. Having developed a love of science and research, he also later graduated in economics and accounting, opening up further businesses in agriculture. More recently, Charlie has been involved in agricultural politics regarding national animal welfare issues, and has been elected to the Australian Wool Board, while also belonging to the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In recent years, he began writing children’s books –originally basic stories for his children, who seemed to have insatiable appetites for anything with animals, fish or insects. He now plans to write as much as he can in the future, and is now working on his first teenage novel.

Meg is a cat who looks just a little different. Join her as she discovers how her own value lies not in her appearance, but in her willingness to help, and her desire to attain true friendships.
About the Author Kat Ilich has a Bachelor of Arts in sociology, communications and film from Central Queensland University, and has worked in a number of media and communications roles for large-scale construction and performing arts companies. During her tertiary education, she studied professional and creative writing, as well as script writing for stage and screen, and previously worked as an actor and model in Brisbane. She had long been writing short stories and poetry for herself, and began to explore children’s fiction after falling pregnant with her son. Kat began to collect her favourite picture books from her own childhood, and noted their shared dance of rhyme, playful intonation and memorable repetition. The Cat with No Tail is inspired by a family legacy, and Kat hopes it will not only delight her young readers, but also promote confidence and strength in each individual who reads it. Kat lives in Mackay, North Queensland, with her two-year old son Percy, her husband Tony, and her cat named Meg. About the Illustrator Lexie Watt has worked as a nurse and as an artist, and has previously illustrated two books, Sophie’s Prize and her own original picture book entitled Chookies! An accomplished artist, The Cat with No Tail is Lexie’s third illustrated children’s book, and her artistry of animals and softly vivid colours comes together to beautifully complement the fable’s story.

She later graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Arts and from Queensland University of Technology with a Graduate Diploma in Business and a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing. Megan has lived and worked in Sydney, London and Brisbane in different occupations, and currently works as a legal secretary in Brisbane. She delights in literature, animals and good food, and lives in an apartment in Brisbane with a rainforest fairy garden out the back, which she shares with her partner, Mark and their pet cat, Bella. Fluffy’s Tale is her first book. About the Illustrator Karen is a freelance illustrator and designer living in Brisbane, Australia, with her husband and two children. This book is educational and introduces the young reader to Australia’s unique megafauna in an entertaining way. It is written as if the animals are presenting themselves to the reader. The book was written at the request of school librarians who purchased my fantasy series for middle readers featuring the megafauna of Australia. They asked for an entertaining book for younger readers with illustrations of the animals. A series of illustrated books will follow featuring two of the animals interacting as they would have in the wild. Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, many large and unusual animals lived in Australia. Some lived with the dinosaurs, but many were still here 50,000 years ago when humans arrived in our land. Some have survived to become the animals we see today. But some, sadly, died out like the dinosaurs. Step into Nida Valley, where they still roam. They are waiting to tell you all about themselves. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Elaine Ouston has a Master of Letters in Creative Writing. She teaches writing to adults, and edits for other authors. She has four published books. They include a chapter book, Lost in a Strange Land, and a picture book called The Lost Shoes. Two books in The Mystery of Nida Valley have been released and she is working on the third. She is available for book signings and author talks about her books and the animals, or for writing workshops for adults or children. Her sessions are interactive, educational and engaging. She is used to talking to groups and modifies her talk to suit the various age groups.
