November 2016 This is a harder one to write as I am essentially talking about the business. In November 2016 we will have been in this business for 25 years. One day in early October 1991 I called Richard Parslow (my immediate boss) to say I was leaving HarperCollins after 21 of the greatest years with some of the best I had known; bit of a shock to all. Lea said if I wanted to start a business I / we should. So ended my executive status days. By third week November 1991 I had invoiced my first books. Little did I realise how hard this journey was going to be. We had no publisher list to start off with and $6,000 of cash to see us through. My two girls were still of school age and did not fully comprehend what their father had done. I do remember phoning Phil Walshe from what was then called ALPAV to ask him if I could take on the Large Print distribution – at that time Phil got off the tractor and we started a long selling association. At Harper I always had the feeling that I was working with “chosen” people and that those people were the best in the world; so it was tough to walk from them. As many humans can do we are still very good friends with so many of those “chosen” people today. After 25 years I now feel the same about this organisation – I work with “chosen” people who support the path to the future free from legacy system. I do not want to say a lot about the journey other than I have probably achieved what I set out to do and that was to be able to say what I truly think when I want to and act in a way where I am not under the foot of overseas patrons. So these two periods of full time work amount to 46 years and only two employers. Thank you. Reading has always had a profound effect on me – whether to do with custom, knowledge, companionship or having a steel rod next to my spine via those great authors' works. At secondary school my addiction was to Australian History and Renaissance Europe – so those books and authors who illuminated my life were; Manning Clark, Geoffrey Blainey and Nicolo Machiavelli. My reading for English covered with most reflection; Donald Horne and Vance Packard. My entry into working life was most affected by books like Future Shock - Alvin Toffler’s wonderful landmark work, Lee Iacocca – Lee made me strong enough to face whatever I had to face in work life, if it was good enough for Lee to have to humbly drink coffee from a plastic cup and work from a shed – I could be as humble. To be part (in those early days) of working
Words from the Wise with people like Malcolm & Kitty Muggeridge (on this tour we saw Mother Teresa!), David Attenborough – the most enjoyable author ever to come to our shores, Sidney Sheldon, Jackie Collins, Goobalathaldin (Dick Roughsey) Xavier Herbert and a long list of luminaries. And now the current. I heard early last month about the passing of Terry Kitson. Terry & I had at times a difficult relationship between a CEO and one of his senior managers. Terry did not have a lot of compromise and maybe I did not either. Still I respected the huge task he performed for Harper globally and also sticking up for a lot of us against the tyranny of some of the Senior Execs from overseas. Farewell Terry. I also saw that Kevin Simkiss passed away. Kevin was (from memory) a Gordon & Gotch stalwart who ultimately ran Angus & Roberston in the days when you could walk away with an order for 20,000 or 30,000 copies of a book with good faith and scant paperwork. What did I read last weekend? Well I was excited to read the Dr Bogle & Mrs Chandler; it is an account of social change as well as an exploration of forensic challenges from many parts of the world. I have to say we are fortunate to have the author's mind working out the solution from such very thin available evidence. Glad also to see the SMH, Melbourne Age and Canberra Times getting behind it. I also read The Art of Frugal Hedonism, written by Anne Rasier-Rowland and Adam Grubb (those authors whose prior work was the Weed Foragers Handbook.) It is all new to me – this world of being frugal at the same time as celebrating your status. We could sell 20,000 copies – it has that sort of factor behind it. The inner city dwellers will ride a country mile for it. Whilst I am not a fan of dumpster diving or being selective about the consumption of roadkill I am going to have a renewed approach to my vegetable patch and use some the hints. BTW Chelsea Green will be taking it into the overseas markets. Don’t forget the Christos Tsiolkas quote - The Art of Frugal Hedonism is an absolute joy. It is good-natured not pious, humane not self-righteous and a guide to ethical living that makes the impossible possible. I am happy to make this book my bible. Keep buying, reading and talking about books. Thanks for the first 25 years. Dennis Jones

It's been a long and at times difficult journey for the man born Jeffrey Leo Newton. His seemingly normal world was turned on its head when at an early age he was diagnosed with Spina Bifida - many challenging and at times life threatening illnesses and long periods of hospitalisation followed. Despite this, his extra-ordinary singing talent soon surfaced. A child prodigy, he made his first professional appearance aged 5 singing at his Aunty Betty and Uncle Thomas' wedding. As a teenager, he did what many of us dream about and ran away from home, until a friendly policeman put him back on the straight and narrow. By age 15 he had secured a guest spot on Channel Nine's TV teen talent showcase, Opportunity Knocks, hosted by Desmond Tester, and appeared regularly on the show between 1961 and 1963. From an early age, he refused to see Spina Bifida as a disability or use it as an excuse to prevent him achieving his goals. Many things were beyond his control and with his mobility deteriorating in early 1965; he had no option but to exchange his leg calipers for crutches. This setback did little to deter him and he soon joined his first band. On record, Jeff St John is best remembered for scorching, brass-laden smash singles like "Big Time Operator" and "Teach Me How To Fly". At the peak of his popularity, Jeff underwent a series of complicated operations that resulted in loss of mobility and him becoming wheelchair-bound. Undeterred, Jeff soon returned to live performance and transformed what many saw as a 'liability' into his own trademark, executing 'wheelies' and 'pirouettes' across the stage as he sang. But beneath his successful public persona was a struggling soul striving to find love and overcome personal demons. Finally, unable to cope with the roller coaster of one broken relationship after another, he succumbed to self-doubt and attempted the ultimate act of self-criticism - suicide. His is a story of inspiration, passion, rocknroll, hit singles, fame, drugs, séances, broken marriages, self doubt, attempted suicide, triumph and finally true love...

2nd Phase Book Limited
One freakish pass in a match against the Broncos in Brisbane in 2003 made Sione Faumuina an overnight rugby league sensation. But Sione would learn the hard way that fame comes at a price, and good intentions are not enough, especially when alcohol takes hold. He seemingly had it all, but for most of his career he struggled with the demands made on a professional athlete, and the temptations that are all around during the downtimes. The Second Phase tells Sione’s story, from childhood, through professional sport in both hemispheres, to the life of a blue collar worker, to starting a business, and a family, in Australia. Sione pulls no punches, unveiling his shortcomings for all to see. At 35, he has many chapters to write, but he appears to be on the right path, and this autobiography is a courageous part of his transformation. Publicity - Media by Debbie McInnes

In Australia, the elements dominate our senses. Fire, Earth, Wind, and Water – they bring awe, silence, fear, contemplation, beauty, all at once. Australia Elements presents the creation and identity of today’s Australia through its maps, histories and myths. “Australia, an island like no other,” the book begins. Its mystery lies in its extremes, vastness, and isolation. Caroline Bouquet, author of Mapping Sydney, continues to delight. Her sensitive text and exquisite drawings embrace the powers of nature, and the expanses of time and space.
Author Information The French artist Caroline Bouquet has lived in many places around the world and currently lives in Sydney. In Australia Elements, she continues her travels and meets her inner self within the mightiness and poetry of the elements: Fire, Earth, Wind, and Water. With a Master’s in Fine Arts (Versailles) and a Doctorate in Sociology (Sorbonne), Bouquet has exhibited internationally over the past twenty years, with her work held in both public and private collections. She also authored and illustrated Hong Kong Five Senses and Mapping Sydney.

Newcastle in the 1970s and 1980s was a powerhouse of rock music with dozens of bands performing every night of the week in the city’s pubs and clubs. Rock This City is a personal account of the times, the bands and the venues by someone who was there to see icons such as DV8, Cold Chisel and The Heroes. From women rockers to the Star Hotel riot, author Gaye Sheather chronicles the golden age of the “pub rock years” and captures a time and a spirit that fuelled a city. Illustrated with over 140 colour and black & white images. Published with the generous support of Cattleyard Promotions, organisers of Groovin the Moo and the Plot music events.
Author Information Dr Gaye Sheather is an historian and researcher who lives and works in Newcastle, NSW. 'Rock This City' emerged from Gaye’s PhD thesis: a study of the live rock music scene in Newcastle from the early 1970s to the late 1980s. Gaye is passionate about writing of this time when there was ‘a live band in every corner of every pub’. She is committed to revealing the untold stories of those who were there.

Seven Australians and one New Zealander set out on an epic adventure to trek Papua New Guinea’s remote Black Cat Track. As they make their first steps toward the track, they have no inkling of the disaster that will enfold them. Situated to the north of the Kokoda Track, the Black Cat Track is reputed to be much more demanding than its more famous neighbour, and these intrepid trekkers are keen to test themselves against its gruelling terrain. They share an avid interest in WWII military history, and with some excitement they learn that the Black Cat Track is littered with evidence of the savage battles between Australian and Japanese forces. The trekkers are also keen to experience the culture of the local people. Suddenly, events take a violent turn. Tribal tension erupts around them, and the trekking party is subjected to a horrifying attack. In its blood‐stained aftermath a strong bond develops between the trekkers and the PNG porters. Ultimately, this is a story about culture shock, tragedy, heroism, generosity, and of an unlikely yet enduring bond of friendship that has develop out of a shared traumatic experience.
Author Information Max Carmichael was born in country Victoria and educated at The Geelong College. On leaving school he worked as a Jackeroo on his parent’s property and during this time joined the Citizen Military Force (later called the Army Reserve). In1996 he transferred to the Australian Regular Army and served in a variety of headquarter and staff appointments including three operational deployments. It was during his regular army service he met two of those who would join the ill‐fated Black Cat Trek, Glen Reiss and Jon Hill. Max has published two other works, ‘In Kilted Company’ published by Melbourne Books and ‘With Skill and Fighting’ published by Copyright Publishing Company. These two publications led Glen Reiss to approach him to write the story of the trek along the Black Cat Track.

Number 96 was one of the most groundbreaking and controversial TV shows in the history of Australian television. It was not only the first show to feature on‐screen nudity, it portrayed gay, transgender and interracial relationships with honesty that was way ahead of its time. It was also a technical innovator, writing, filming and marketing at a pace that saw over a 1000 episodes, a movie, numerous books and spin‐offs created in the space of five years. This is the story of the magic and mania of Number 96, told by the people who made it. Number 96 created characters and stories that have stood the test of time. So powerful was the show’s influence that after forty‐five years it still commands a devoted cult following and continues to attract new fans who can scarcely believe what Number 96 was able to get away with.
Author Information Nigel Giles grew up watching television in Croydon, Victoria. He graduated from La Trobe University in 1996 with a BA in Cinema Studies and since then he has contributed to various newspapers and magazines. He provided research assistance for the books Super Aussie Soaps (Pluto Press, 2004) and Puberty Blues (Currency Press, 2004) and has contributed to Umbrella Entertainment DVD releases of Number 96, The Young Doctors and Sons & Daughters. In 2006 he was the major contributor to the Sydney Powerhouse Museum’s ‘On the Box’ exhibition celebrating 50 years of Australian Television. He has recorded close to fifty oral history interviews for the National Film & Sound Archive. This is his first book.

Joan Lindsay's classic novel Picnic at Hanging Rock is a subtle blend of mysterious and sinister events set in a period of Australian social life drawn with loving nostalgia. The final chapter of the novel was removed at the request of her publishers, creating a mystery to which thousands have begged to know the solution. The missing chapter reveals what did happen to the schoolgirls who vanished from the Rock after a St Valentine's Day picnic in 1900, and holds commentaries by John Taylor, Yvonne Rousseau and Mudrooroo.

"How Lawrence Found His Lost Girl in Cornwall", is the title of the Introduction to this edition of Lawrence's sixth major novel. In it Sandra Jobson shows how Lawrence based part of his character Alvina Houghton on Katherine Mansfield, the New Zealand short‐story writer. 'Lost Girl' was in fact Lawrence's third novel, but was not published until 1920. It is his only novel to have won a literary prize. Originally called 'The Insurrection of Miss Houghton', it tells the story of Alvina Houghton, who fights for independence as a woman, but ends up falling in love with an Italian peasant from a mountain village. Will she fight again for independence? Sandra Jobson (Darroch) is the secretary of the DH Lawrence Society of Australia, and is the author of six books, including the first biography of Lady Ottoline Morrell, 'Ottoline: The Life of Lady Ottoline Morrell' (Chatto Windus 1975). An updated version of 'Ottoline', with a new Introduction by the author, will be published by The Svengali Press in 2017.

Why was King Henry, an aboriginal from Western Australia, killed in New South Wales? What was the feud that led to murder after nineteen long years had passed? Who was the woman who saw the murder and kept silent? This first story of Inspector Bonaparte takes him to the Darling River bush country where he encounters those problems he understands so well ‐ mixed blood and divided loyalties. The First National Black Playwrights Conference and Workshop held in Canberra in January 1987 was a hectic affair. More than one participant called on Mudrooroo to use the proceedings (in the sense of what was happening) and the stories going around in a book. Doin Wildcat was that book. It has been called his most Aboriginal work and it should be as it stems from that historical conference and what ha ppened there transferred of course to ‐ well ‐ the world of Wildcat. Wildcat, the prison graduate, drifting through life, making the most of the opportunities that come his way, relishing the pickings of the late 1980s... by the author of Wild Cat Falling.

Nemarluk, one of the most feared Aboriginal renegades in the north of Australia, had vowed to rid his land of all intruders. This is the story of the last three years of his life, and his extraordinary battle with the tracker, Bul‐ Bul, brought in by the Northern Territory police in a final desperate attempt to put an end to Nemarluk's fight.

In Australia in the 1950s, a young Italian migrant boy, Anthony Fabrizi, growing up in Cronulla, a southern beach suburb of Sydney, is bruised by his first love. Innocently, he turns to the Catholic Church, but the deception that occurs at the hands of the brothers and priests he has admired and trusted reveals the pure evil that can exist in a human's heart. Determined to keep his pledge to God, he retreats to Rome, headlong into the underbelly of the world's holiest institution, the Vatican. There he discovers a church with an unspeakable past. Worse still, he has evidence of murder in the highest order. Now he has to run, not only to save himself, but the life of the only woman he has ever loved.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service is a revered legend of the development of Australia as a caring nation. However, few Australians are aware of the man who founded it‐John Flynn‐usually known as Flynn of the Inland. Flynn, who died in 1951, is regarded by historians as one of Australia's greatest sons. In addition to creating the Flying Doctor, he pioneered the Pedal Radio, founded the School of the Air, and built bush hospitals all over the continent on behalf of the Australian Inland Mission. It is a story that every Australian should read, and its powerful drama has been captured by veteran author Everald Compton. Flynn has been his role model in life ever since he first learned about him at a bush Sunday School in 1936. His fervent prayer is that many who read “The Man on the Twenty Dollar Notes” will choose to follow in Flynn's footsteps as the future pioneers of Australia as the finest nation on earth.

This book recuperates for art historians and the reading public the distinguished but forgotten career of the Melbourne artist, Esther Paterson. Aside from providing a close-up of Esther’s oeuvre ─ sketches for newspapers and magazines, landscape painting and portraiture ─ the book illuminates her close association with her family, in particular her husband George Gill and her sister Betty Paterson, also an artist. Esther began classes at the National Gallery Art School (NGAS) under the tutelage of drawing master Fred McCubbin, and painting master Bernard Hall. She graduated in 1912. Her first major solo exhibition at Melbourne’s Besant Hall in 1915 drew critical acclaim from Punch magazine and the Argus, The Age and Herald newspapers. Aussie Girls, Esther’s book of watercolour sketches, published at the end of 1918, was an immediate success for its witty exposé of the new and permissive woman. Prime Minister William ‘Billy’ Hughes, a family friend, opened Esther and Betty’s joint exhibition at the Queen’s Hall on Saturday 1 July 1922. But it failed to gain the critical response Esther received from her previous solo show. William McInnes, an Archibald Prize winner, invited Esther, a former NGAS classmate, to be one of his four sitters for the 1926 Archibald Prize. Of the sixty works submitted, McInnes won with Esther’s portrait titled ‘Silk and lace’. Basking in the glory of McInnes’ win, Esther invited the distinguished lawyer, Sir Randolph Garran, to open her second solo exhibition at the New Gallery in Elizabeth Street the following year. In 1938 Esther entered Sydney’s Archibald Prize with a portrait of her sister Betty titled The Yellow Gloves. She didn’t win, but Howard Hinton purchased the arresting portrait for his collection at the Armidale Teachers’ College gallery, now the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM). In 1950 the Royal Society of Arts elected Esther a fellow of their Society (FRSA). Cheered by the honour she entered a portrait of the author Douglas Gillison in the Archibald. When William Dargie won it for the sixth time, she decided to take her final bow. Elected to the Council of the VAS, she received honorary life membership in 1962, and resigned on 8 May 1968. At a meeting of the MSWPS held in April 1964, the Society made her an honorary life member in recognition of her contribution to the Society since she joined in 1925.

Gae Anderson, born and educated in Wagga Wagga, NSW, has led a multi-faceted life. After working as a shorthand typist in Wagga, where she performed with the Wagga School of Arts Players, she decided to live in Sydney. A colleague encouraged her to audition for the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) which she did successfully. She spent the next twenty years working as a professional actor. Gae’s move to Melbourne in 1981 precipitated a change of direction towards university study. Beginning with a BA in Arts at La Trobe University in 1984, she then completed a Graduate Diploma in Education (Dip.Ed.) and taught English as a Second Language in Melbourne and Sydney. On her return to Sydney in 1989 to live permanently, she completed an MA in Theatre Studies at the University of NSW and a PhD in Arts at Sydney University. Professor Elizabeth Webby, Gae’s supervisor and mentor, encouraged her to convert her two-volume thesis into a book. Tivoli King: The Life of Harry Rickards Vaudeville Showman was published in 2009. Richard A Baker, writing in The Call Boy, the journal of the British Music Hall Society, said ‘No-one previously has trawled through Rickards’ career quite as assiduously – and it is doubtful whether anyone in the future will try to emulate Gae’s success’. While promoting Tivoli King in her home town of Wagga Wagga, Gae was unexpectedly introduced to a family of Melbourne artists. The meeting forms the subject of her second book, Wielding the Brush.

Locomotive Enginemen of Tasmania is a tribute to the men at the coal face of Tasmania’s railways, whose fascinating stories paint a vivid picture of days long gone, from a time when the ‘iron roads’ were crucial to the fortunes of the state. The book features stories from nine Tasmanian enginemen, who worked all manner of trains throughout the state from the 1940s to the 1980s. From Hobart suburbans to Fingal coal trains to the glamorous Tasman Limited, and from the Garratts of the Emu Bay Railway to the Mount Lyell Rack. The enginemen who operated these trains were, by necessity, a special breed – tough, resourceful and independent. Footplate crews endured long hours, with relentless shiftwork and poor conditions. Resilience and humour were essential qualities, particularly in the steam era, when teamwork and mateship ruled.

An important catalogue, which introduces the Ethnological collections conserved in the Vatican Museums, presenting to a wide public, for the first time, works of every age, from prehistory to the contemporary age, and from every part of the world. The catalogue, in addition to providing a comprehensive overview of the extraordinary heterogeneity of the ethnology collection, proposes to introduce the cultural richness of the extra‐European civilizations, promoting the diversity as a new perspective of knowledge. The first part is dedicated to indigenous collections, and each section exposes the most representative artifacts of every continent; the second part focuses on oriental collections, even these divided into sections indicating the area of origin. Both indigenous and oriental collections include a special section reserved for Christian art. Among the works, there are devotional objects, statues, prehistoric stones, masks and musical instruments, as well as the prestigious painted rocks of the Wandjina Song Cycle and Chinese painted paper scrolls. The vast iconographic apparatus is quite suggestive, combining archive photographs and numerous colour images, evocative of habits and customs of different peoples and cultures, and celebratory also of the variety and beauty of the artifacts, true witnesses of "other" worlds, still little known.

"Our indigenous people of Australia are three percent of the total Australian population. But of that three percent the last statistics reveal that at least 50 percent of that population is affected by some form of disability. This is a very high number for our people. A lot of our people haven't connected with agencies, because of the 'Stolen Generation', it's the fear of having a child removed from them and that child growing up institutionalised. I am extremely passionate about it‐ fighting the fear, fighting the racism. Being indigenous and having a disability you get a double whammy." ‐ Gayle Rankine, Chairperson, First Peoples Disability Network (Australia). Chairperson, of the Indigenous Persons With Disabilities Global Network. There are thirty stories in this publication and each story is intertwined with Australia's complex social and political history. A history that has resulted in the unacceptably high rates of disability within the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Every participant of this project has revealed their very personal story in order to draw much needed attention to these critical issues. This catalogue has been produced with the support of the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to accompany the Unfinished Business Exhibition, which was shown that the United Nations' 2014 World Conference of Indigenous Peoples in New York .

Lives of the Papunya Tula Artists chronicles the beginnings of the Western Desert art movement and the phenomenal development of its founding art company over four decades. Through comprehensive and widely research biographies of more than 200 men and women the book illuminates lives balanced between first contact and international stardom, poverty and record auction prices. In the early 1970s, a small group of Western Desert 'painting men' at Papunya in Central Australia seized the opportunity to experiment with new techniques and materials, producing vibrant and innovative works that give enduring expression to their powerful tjukurrpa (Dreamings). In the years since, Papunya Tula Artists Pty Ltd has made a profound contribution to the Western Desert art movement and international contemporary art. Over 25 years in the making, Lives of the Papunya Tula Artists celebrates both the individual lives of the artists and their cooperative endeavour. It showcases the importance of what they share: family and country, significant sites, tjukurrpa and life histories. Illustrated with numerous candid photographs and key artworks, this book charts the historical landscape of the Papunya Tula artists revealing a collective creative achievement of rare genius.

Born without the lower half of his left leg, young Don Elgin never considered himself disabled until he was in high school ‐ and even then, he had to be convinced. Driven by an inherited sense of grit, determination and pure guts, Don overcomes an abundance of obstacles to rise to the top of the sporting heap. His life's philosophy tells us that success is not a birthright ‐ it's earned. If you're likely to buy only one book this year, make sure it's a ripper. Make it one about a boy from the bush who's hell‐ bent on becoming an elite sportsman. Be sure it's a true story, with ups and downs and plenty of fun times you can relate to. This book is the culmination of many experiences, practices and studies undertaken over the course of my life. When I was young I loved sport; including Rugby League, boxing, judo and others. Disillusioned with competition and not overly enjoying school, at the age of fifteen, I retreated to live in a shack in a forest in the New South Wales North Coast with a few friends. Here we explored natural living; yoga, surfing, playing music and eating a vegetarian diet. After several years, I returned to Sydney armed with a newly discovered Macrobiotic diet and I began to explore yoga more deeply. Over time I became interested in oriental medicine and the healing arts. I moved into the East West Foundation in order to study and experience these ways on a full time basis. Around this time my interest in developing “Ki” or “Chi” energy arose and I began to train full time in Aikido – the way of harmonising Ki or the way of Spiritual Harmony. Eventually I began teaching these arts in various centres that I have founded over the years. I have been invited to teach these principles in universities, corporations, schools, businesses, prisons, various centres and dojos. I have worked with people from all walks of life – including mothers, actors, artists, professors, trades people, sporting professionals – the list goes on. The name of this book came about through a period of my life many years ago when I was experiencing some conflict in a relationship. Eventually I had overcome the conflict and had achieved a certain level of harmony and stability. I

Getting Our Act Together can help you to: Understand yourself in groups, Get along with people, Make decisions collaboratively, Have great meetings, Talk about difficult 'stuff', Start a new group, What to do when trouble strikes!, Resolve conflict.
Author Information
A pioneer of collaborative work practices and group work, Glen Ochre was a giant of the facilitation movement in Australia. She co-founded the intentional community and workshop space, Commonground, in Seymour, Victoria, and its offshoot - the Melbourne-based collaborative education centre, the Groupwork Institute of Australia. Glen was driven by a passion for a just, nonviolent and sustainable world that arose from her own experience of violence, poverty and discrimination. These same forces propelled her work as an activist, counsellor, social worker, nurse, educator, facilitator and group worker that influenced thousands of people. Glen died at the age of 69 on Tuesday, May 13, after wrestling with pancreatic cancer for 15 months. Cancer was one of many setbacks that marked her life of great achievement. These included an abusive and difficult childhood, the poverty of living as a single mother and the death of two of her six children.

Being a curious person John Dixon takes a photo through the slightly opened limousine window. Inside is an older man strangling a younger woman. It’s the European autumn, Hamburg, Germany and John’s stumbling alone to his hostel from a big night out with other backpackers. This is not a usual night for this young New York accountant. John runs into the night while being shot at by one police officer and other men. The murderer, Italian Michael Turcarelli and his associates want John and the evidence, a data-card with the photo. Michael is a likeable politician. He’s intelligent, well educated, analytical, organised, however he has a secret second-life, a fetish for killing prostitutes. Appointed the task of finding John and the data-card/photos is Roberto, Michael’s right-hand-man. Fleeing Hamburg John meets Heidi, a German medical student. Heidi can relate to John's situation as the East German police killed her father years ago. Needing resources, John flies to London to meet an old friend Paul who supplies cash, a passport and a train ticket back to Europe so John may identify the killer. In London John runs into one of Michael’s men, who he kills in self-defence. This event introduces a funny UK Inspector Wolfgang and work colleague Rachel. French police identify John as he arrives in Paris, a picturesque rooftop chase develops, and Michael’s men follow. Again another accidental death occurs by John. News of the murdered prostitute takes John and a reunion of Heidi to Amsterdam. John is captured and Heidi comes to the rescue, driving a vehicle into John’s captive. A newspaper article shows Michael is Italy’s Prime Minister who’s involved in a sex-scandal. Paul is called up and arrives for the final showdown at a conference where Michael is speaking in Cologne, Germany. John’s captured, however after being caught, Paul plants a recording device on John. Michael attempts to negotiate a settlement. John won’t agree. Rodger takes John to a park to be executed; Michael meets them there and strangles John until he collapses and his body ends up in a body bag. Paul and Inspector Wolfgang arrive and a car chase develops. Rodger is arrested and a heated conflict occurs between Michael, Paul and local Police. Heidi, Inspector Wolfgang and Rachel watch the arrest of Michael and Rodger on television. John appears and is united with Paul and Heidi; he explains he blacked-out performing a syncope-technique before being placed in the body bag, something he learnt from Heidi’s medical books. Michael is found guilty of murder, John lives and gets together with Heidi.

In this first person account of a sojourn in Africa, The View from Ibadan tells a story of culture shock and personal growth. Greg, a twenty‐three‐year‐old Australian, arrives in Ibadan, Nigeria, racked by multiple unresolved dilemmas from home. He brings, as well, his sense of adventures and energy of youth. Smoothness in the flow of prose and real power in the imagery make this a powerful reading experience. The author is both an excellent writer and an impressive thinker ‐ Sean Doyle AVAILABLE NOW
Author Information Peter Wigg is an Australian psychiatrist who has worked for extended periods in Papua New Guinea, Nigeria, Iraq and Jordan. He has also worked in student health services in England, and as a psychotherapist treating emotionally disturbed young adults in Australia. Australian journo Peter Clancy is in London this time, working for a notorious scandal sheet. While writing salacious stories on celebrities, Clancy poses as a biographer to dig the dirt on drug‐ and alcohol‐raddled Olivia Michaels, once a star of the screen. But the more he discovers about Olivia Michaels, the more deeply he becomes embroiled in ugly secrets stretching across the entertainment world to the highest echelons of society. Can Clancy succeed in his mission to blow the lid off Britain's darkest secrets?
Author Information I was born and raised in outback Australia but now live on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula. I was a health professional for many years but deep down I was a writer trying to get out. I wrote my first book Homecountry in 2012 during a health crisis. The central character was a hard-living Australian journalist named Peter Clancy. Homecountry became an Amazon best seller and was featured in several major newspapers and magazines in Australia. I liked the character of Peter Clancy so much that I decided to write a series of books about his adventures. So far, I've published another two with a third due for release in 2017. When I'm not writing or thinking about writing, I like to dine out with friends and family, play guitar and spend time exploring the Mornington Peninsula.

Through their stories, she embarks on a journey of discovery about herself and her unexpected heritage, and about persecution, love and understanding. It turns out that the book brings her more than she could have ever imagined.

The climactic finale of the Great Schools of Dune Trilogy, set 10,000 years before Frank Herbert’s classic DUNE. NAVIGATORS OF DUNE is a fascinating portal into vital components of the mesmerizing, intense universe of Dune. Every DUNE fan knows of the Spacing Guild’s mysterious Navigators, the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood program to breed a superhuman, and the Mentats, trained as human computers to replace forbidden thinking machines. But until now, readers knew little of how they came to be. Navigators, mutated by space into beings far superior to normal humans, make space travel possible across the burgeoning Imperium. Their prescient awareness allows them to foresee safe paths through the universe as starship engines “fold” space. Only industrial magnate Josef Venport knows the secret of creating Navigators, and he intends to build a commercial empire to span the galaxy. But at every turn Josef is embattled by the forces of antitechnology fanaticism, “Butlerian” zealots led by the charismatic and dangerous Manford Torondo, who wishes to countermand humanity’s new renaissance and drive the Imperium back into a dark age. And between those titanic forces stands the uncertain new Emperor Roderick Corrino, forced to take the throne after the assassination of his brother. The Navigators are the key to charting a glorious future for humanity . . . or the end of civilization.
“With their useful fidelity to the vision of the late Frank Herbert, coauthors Herbert (Frank’s son) and Anderson (The Winds of Dune) continue to illuminate heretofore hidden areas of the Dune time line. Fully realized characters and intricate plotting will put this title high on fans’ to-read list.” —Library Journal Starred review, Sisterhood of Dune

Two decades after the devastating Elemental War, which nearly destroyed the cosmos, the new Confederation restored peace and profitable commerce among the peoples and worlds of the Spiral Arm. The ambitious, innovative Roamers went back to their traditional business of harvesting the vital stardrive fuel ekti from the clouds of gas giant planets, and the telepathic green priests of Theroc provided instantaneous galaxy‐wide communication via their connection to the powerful and sentient worldtrees. The alien Ildiran Empire rebuilt their grand Prism Palace under the light of their seven suns, and their Mage‐Imperator declared a new age of expansion and discover. But peace was not to last. The malevolent Klikiss robots soon found an ally in the ancient and near‐omnipotent Shana Rei, destructive creatures who are the personification of darkness and chaos … awakened after millennia of slumber to destroy all sentient life in the universe. The Confederation and the Ildiran Empire fought in every way possible, but the Spiral Arm itself seemed doomed. All across the transportal network, space is tearing apart, the links between the gateways are breaking down, the fabric of space unraveling. The worldtrees are dying, entire planets are englobed in impenetrable black barriers erected by the Shana Rei, and the murderous taint has infiltrated the Ildiran race as well as Mage‐Imperator Jora’h himself.

When Gallen O’Day is hired as a bodyguard to escort a young woman through the woods to the forbidden ruins at Geata Na Chruinn, it seems like an ordinary job—but all too soon, he finds himself fleeing for his life from creatures that seem like escapees from a nightmare—the alien dronon, led by their golden queen. With his best friend, a genetically engineered talking bear named Orick, and his girlfriend Maggie, Gallen soon finds himself tangled in an interstellar war that he never knew existed, racing across a host of worlds, confronted by a future unlike any that he had ever imagined. From the New York Times Bestselling Author of The Runelords and Star Wars: The Courtship of Princess Leia
In The Golden Queen, Gallen O'Day was able to fight off the alien dronons and their golden queen, but now he discovers that he can no longer hide on his home world. Betrayed by his uncle, he soon finds himself an outlaw— forced into exile by entering the ancient world gates, where he begins a new adventure, seeking to save a world from a foe far worse than the dreaded dronon: a race of biologically engineered supermen. In a land far more dangerous than any that he had ever imagined, he is forced to accept a new role in the galaxy as a Lord Protector, even as the alien dronon continue to close in on Gallen and the people he loves most.
Blasters flare, evil aliens maraud and salvation comes to the deserving in this third volume (after Beyond the Gate) of Farland’s popular Golden Queen space opera series. In an earlier installment, Maggie Flynn became the Golden Queen of the Sixth Swarm of the insect‐like Dronon invaders of human worlds when her husband, the Lord Protector Gallen, defeated the old queen's champion in single combat, thereby saving humanity from complete domination. Now Maggie and Gallen have fled the galaxy, seeking a distant planet where they can wait out Maggie's pregnancy and evade the other Dronon Swarms. Unfortunately, Ruin, the planet they choose, is owned by the mad Lord Felph, who enlists the pair in a dangerous plan to conquer Ruin's horrific jungles and to find a mysterious and powerful artifact. The situation is complicated by Felph's inhuman, occasionally murderous children, and by the eventual appearance of the Dronon.

For twenty‐five‐year‐old Tyler Morgan, being murdered was easy ... in comparison with working for the Grim Reaper. Jonathon Grimm may have brought her back from the dead in exchange for working as a reaper for her hometown, Easton, but she has to find his lost reaper before she can enjoy her second chance at life. Only … the lost reaper isn’t actually lost. He has a new body and a new life and no intention of turning himself in, even if it means giving Tyler her life back. Tyler begins the grisly task of reaping the souls of Easton’s dead while searching for the reaper. He could be anyone – the intriguing detective, Sam Lockwood; the handsome Chris Bradbury; or the serial killer stalking the women of Easton. As the killer closes in and Grimm’s deadline draws closer, Tyler discovers she is fighting a much bigger threat than the Grim Reaper and time is running out for everyone. Next: Winged Reaper.
Author Information
Shelley Russell Nolan is an avid reader who began writing her own stories at sixteen. Her first completed manuscript featured brain eating aliens and a butt kicking teenage heroine. Since then she has spent her time creating fantasy worlds where death is only the beginning and even freaks can fall in love. A member of Romance Writers of Australia, Australian Romance Readers Association and Queensland Writers Centre, Shelley regularly attends workshops and writers festivals to meet other writers and readers. Born in New Zealand, moving to Australia with her family when she was seven, Shelley currently lives in Central Queensland, Australia, with her husband and two young children. They share their home with two wrecking ball kitties, a deformed budgerigar and two dogs that are fairly normal as dogs go.

In Universal Mother, Elif Sezen braids the intersections of domestic histories and spiritual evolution. She navigates the large themes: complementary concepts of separation and homecoming, visible and invisible, eternity and temporality, love and grief, irony and melancholy. The world these poems conjure is one of imagination and mystical longing. The poet’s mother and the poet herself, as feminine, are the departure point for the persona in these poems, journeying haunted and at times ecstatic through surprising venues and occasions. As myth‐making for a self, and as social understanding, Elif Sezen’s imagery in this book bridges the personal and the collective, in a special sense. Reflecting upon her own transcultural identity, this work carries itself across boundaries between East and West.

Troubadour is a collection of poems about Australians and Australia modelled on the work of 12th and 13th century troubadours from what is now southern France. The poems are presented in two parts: Part One is a set of 48 poems intended for private reading, Part Two is a subset of 24 poems intended for public recital together with music for violin obbligato, demonstrating originality and virtuosity. What the critics said: ‘Temperament is a poetry book for the true romantic. Disarmingly simple in language and form, Aslanides’ work is layered with unpretentious mysticism, genuine revelation of spirit and, overall, a courageous exploration of personal vulnerability.’ —Judith Crispin
Author Information Aslanides’ first book of poems, The Greek Connection, won him the British Commonwealth Poetry Prize for 1978 for the best first book of poetry in English published the previous year in the British Commonwealth, excluding England; he was the first Australian to win this prize. He has since produced 13 books. His fourth book of poetry, Australian Things, was awarded joint second prize in the 1988 bicentennial poetry awards for book-length collections. Because he is Australian-born and Australian-focused and, since July 1985, a full-time professional Australian poet, he does not (and never has) identified as an ‘ethnic’ poet; nor does he write ‘multicultural’ poetry. Though he feels that most, if not all of his poetry has its origin in love, the context of this affection is the celebration of the natural and built environments of Australia, and the history and imaginative genius of the people.

A collection of poems in three sections: I: A Thrill of Cold Stars – prose poems exploring the dark side of fairy tales, nature, relationships II: The Grateful Wounds – dealing with breast cancer III: The Sly Night Creatures of Desire – love and loss, joy and grief, sensuality and eroticism What the critics said: “Debi Hamilton has transitioned from psychology to poetry with a passion and enthusiasm that is infectious.” – Claire Gaskin, author of Paperweight “These are luminous poems of survival and hope, made with mischief and moral seriousness and love. Debi Hamilton writes poems that are kind, elegant and sly. One finds solace in their craft, humanity, intelligence and poise. One finds inspiration in their gentle intelligence, their unassuming accomplishment. The poems in The Sly Night Creatures of Desire are clever, consoling experiments, meditations on desire, death and the everyday gifts of garden and light and affection, fashioned in the ecotone between lyric prose and plainspoken poetry. Beautiful still lives, love poems of deep maturity.” – Mark Tredinnick, celebrated Australian poet, essayist and teacher.
Author Information Debi Hamilton is a writer, psychologist and award‐winning poet. She ran a private practice as a psychologist for twenty years before turning to writing three years ago. She has since won several awards and commendations, and a number of her short stories, non‐fiction pieces, and poems have been published. Her first collection of poetry, Being Alone, was published in July 2013. She was joint first prize winner in the 2014 Newcastle Poetry Prize. She lives in Melbourne.

The phrase ‘have been and are’ is taken from the last sentence of Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species – ‘Endless forms most beautiful and wonderful have been and are being evolved’ – and the poems in Brook Emery’s fifth collection are attentive to the implied puzzles of evolution and beauty, fixity and flux. Imagined as ‘transactions’ between readers and writers across time the loosely‐linked poems, all of whose titles bar one are quotations, tangle and untangle the interlacings of nature, language, culture and identity in an attempt to discover ‘ground on which to stand.’ Full of allusions, sometimes personal, sometimes bemused, often reflective and speculative, the poetry is consistently lucid, lyrical and tactile; it thinks through the eye, the ear, the body’s engagement with the world: ‘… So, I pass through bush, I tread upon; I am within the sea, wrapped round, held …’ithin thesea, wrapped round, held … ’
Author Information Brook Emery’s first three books of poetry were and dug my fingers in the sand (FIP, 2000), which won the Judith Wright Calanthe Prize in the Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards, Misplaced Heart (FIP, 2003) and Uncommon Light (FIP, 2007). All three were short‐listed for the Kennewth Slessor Prize in the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards. His fourth book, Collusion (John Leonard Press, 2012), was short‐listed for the Western Australian Premier’s Prize. He was born in 1949 and lives in Sydney.

Readers of Aileen Kelly’s earlier books will recognise that in these final poems she is at the height of her powers. The poems are abrupt, distilled and beautifully rhythmed. Life is her object and her passion, as always. The language has the essentia autonomy of poetry, and yet these poems are directly personal, involving family and friends, their bodies and her own, and her own experience among delicately defined landscapes. Inevitably, it seems, poem after poem is also metaphysical, and socially aware. Perhaps the briefest description, however, is the best: here is wit and imagination.
Author Information Aileen Kelly was born in 1939 in England, where she grew up in Winchester, and graduated from Cambridge. She lived in Melbourne from 1962. An outstanding adult educator, she increasingly specialised in the writing and reading of poetry, working with many writing groups around Victoria. Coming Up for Light (Pariah Press, 1994) won the Mary Gilmore Award for best Australian first book of poetry, and was shortlisted for the Anne Elder and Victorian Premier’s awards. Parts of her second book, City and Stranger (FIP, 2002) arose from a 1998 residency in Ireland supported by the Vincent Buckley Prize. Her third book, The Passion Paintings: Poems 1993 – 2006 was a complete book of new poems, plus most of the poems from the first two. She died in 2011. She had kept writing, and a number of the poems here date from that year.

At just 24, Emma Gee's future stretches before her invitingly. She was an occupational therapist, an avid runner and had just climbed Borneo's Mt Kinabalu with a group of friends. But months later she was suddenly a stroke victim, unable to move, speak or swallow and dependent on the medical system she had worked within. Emma's story begins with a mystery, first developing disturbing symptoms, then becomes a tragedy when, during a difficult brain operation, she suffers a debilitating stroke and is left in a coma. Nine days later she wakes and must slowly come to terms with the fact that her future has changed forever. Tenaciously, Emma works her way back to walking and talking again. As a former health professional she has a rare insight into life as a patient, and emerges with a very different perspective on person-centred care and what it takes to live with resilience. Emma's story shows how, with love, support and a positive mindset, a life can still be incredible, even though not to the plan previously envisaged, and entailing a daily battle with poor vision, balance and mobility. Emma is now a loving auntie to a brood of nieces and nephews and has an amazing support network. Writing a diary before, after and, as much as was possible, during the ordeal, Emma has woven her observations and memories into a book. She has a sharp eye for detail and a sense of humour that, understandably, becomes quite black at times. This is not only the story of a young stroke survivor, but also a valuable observational memoir for health professionals, written by one of their own who has travelled to 'the other side'.
We live in a two‐handed world. Following a stroke or limb injury the transition from managing life with two hands to surviving with one can seem almost impossible.

Drama and beauty abound on the plains of Africa, and in this superb collection of images, Australian photographers Kym and Tonya Illman present an intimate insight into Earth's greatest wilderness. This lavish book is the result of thousands of hours spent on safari in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The Illmans' innovative, and sometimes controversial, approach includes cameras buried at the edges of waterholes, mounted on aerial drones and on remote‐controlled buggies, with many lost to lions and elephants in the process. They have spent days concealed in photographic hides to capture low‐level shots and have chartered helicopters to photograph wildlife and vistas not accessible by land. Each photograph is accompanied by the fascinating story behind its capture. In the final section the Illmans discuss the various elements that ensure a successful safari, from both a sightseeing and photographic viewpoint. This splendid collection of photographs is an unforgettable record of Africa in all its untamed beauty and raw emotion. From the brutality of the food chain to playful shots of animals at their most uninhibited, from majestic sunsets to brooding landscapes, there is no greater theatre than nature itself.
Author Information Kym and Tonya Illman are passionate and innovative wildlife photographers. They own an audio production business in Perth, Western Australia, but their love of Africa’s landscapes and wildlife has led them to spend around three months a year photographing in Africa using a range of photographic aids and techniques including quadcopters, remote‐controlled camera buggies, and buried or hidden cameras. Their unconventional approach has yielded fascinating angles, spectacular images and some wonderful stories.

The range of images is far reaching across Australia, and the book shows many of the highlights of this often harsh, but unique country. From the tropical beaches, cool high country, stunning waterfalls, fern and palm covered rainforests, to the outback deserts and gorges, Australia has something for everyone. It is a country that one can get totally immersed in, and very few people would not be impressed by its vastness, where you can easily find solitude amongst the nature of your choosing.

Joice Loch was an extraordinary Australian. She had the inspired courage that saved many hundreds of Jews and Poles in World War II, the compassion that made her a self‐trained doctor to tens of thousands of refugees, the incredible grit that took her close to death in several theatres of war, and the dedication to truth and justice that shone forth in her own books and a lifetime of astonishing heroism. This classic Australian autobiography is a tribute to one of Australia's most heroic women, who always spoke with great fondness of Queensland as her birthplace. In 2006 a Loch Memorial Museum was opened in the tower by the sea in Ouranoupolis, a tribute to the Lochs and their humanitarian work. Publicity by Deb McInnes

Will Santa learn his lesson and fix the washing machine in time for next Christmas?

The most romantic gift book of the year. Created by Davide Cali and Serge Bloch, the award-winning team behind 'The Enemy', this is a celebration of that most pleasurable and romantic human activity: the kiss. A picture book for grown-ups, 'I Love Kissing You' relates the history of a relationship through its more memorable kisses: from the momentous first kiss to those stolen in the kitchen, on stairs or in elevators, to those in more exotic locations. Warm, funny and down-to-earth, the book features Serge Bloch's elegantly simple illustrations throughout, and is sumptuously clothbound and jacketed in a special narrow B+ format. This Wilkins Farago edition marks its first publication into English anywhere in the world. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

When Maggie Magpie alerts the native wildlife of the Goonoo Forest to the presence of trappers in their midst, the whole forest is in an uproar. What can they do? Where can they hide? King Parrot calls them all to order, but to no avail. Rover the Barking Owl arrives amongst all the confusion and comes up with a daring plan. He convinces the frightened creatures that by working together as a team, they can overcome the intruders. He calls upon George the Giant Goanna to help and, together with the other forest inhabitants, the plan is successfully carried out. The back pages of the book are devoted to illustrations and information concerning the forest creatures depicted in the story and a map showing where the forest is situated. During the 1940s and '50s in Australia there rose to prominence many icons of Aboriginal descent, representative of the culture of the day and of their own people. Some permanently influenced the minds of Australians and remain famous to this day. Others have been unjustly forgotten. This book offers an unparalleled biographical exploration of their lives, providing a prism through which the reader can view and come to a better understanding of significant aspects of resilient Aboriginal culture and its place in Australian history. Albert Namatjira was a great watercolour landscape artist. Harold Blair was an outstandingly charismatic concert tenor of vast audience appeal. Robert Tudawali and Ngarla Kunoth were the famous stars of Charles Chauvel's ground-breaking Australian movie, Jedda. Reg Saunders was a highly decorated war hero and the first Aboriginal commissioned officer in the permanent Australian armed forces. Harry Penrith (later known as Burnum Burnum) was a brilliant and versatile teenage sporting star and later a public figure of charisma and controversy.
The unique true story of a Vietnam soldier who was killed in action on his first wedding anniversary. Based on the life of Pte C.W. Roost, the book tackles the horrors of war and in particular the loss of a loved one in the duty of service to his country. An exceptional love story written from a woman's perspective, this book puts a human face to the controversial war in Vietnam. At just 20 years of age Chris, like so many Australian young men, was conscripted into the army as a National Serviceman. After marrying his childhood sweetheart, Mary, Chris was posted to Vietnam in June 1968. This book follows Chris' adventures through training, marriage and war. It shares his thoughts through his precious letters to his family, and tells the incredible story of the impact of war on our young Aussies. Chris was killed in action on December 23rd 1968 - his first wedding anniversary. He lives on in this book.

Politics, Death and Addiction tells how an active Member of Parliament, psychologist and mother became addicted to alcohol and 'pokies', while rearing her granddaughter and working as a Member of Parliament, following her daughter's suicide. Grounded in the reality of Labor Party politics and public policy making, it exposes the impact on Carolyn Hirsh's public life of unacknowledged grief and undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder. The book offers insight for others suffering from similar challenges, by providing a professional self-analysis. Through blending current dilemmas with childhood flashbacks, the reader gets a real sense of why Hirsh reacted as she did to the humiliation of being told to resign from the Labor Party over her misdemeanours. Politics, Death and Addiction is much more than a political who, what and when: Hirsh shines an unforgiving light on people and processes during her time in the media spotlight and beyond. The manuscript was shortlisted for the Finch Memoir Prize, 2013.

Commander Alexander Smith RN served his country with fearless resolution for seventeen years on the quarterdeck, encountering many adventures on the high seas - an intrepid voyager in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Under the command of Captain James Clark Ross, he became a heroic polar explorer in the north Atlantic and was chosen for the epic 1839-1843 British Antarctic Expedition aboard the Erebus in the pivotal rank of First Mate. For the first time, the expeditions Erebus and Terror penetrated the furthest south into the Antarctic and discovered the ice barrier despite competition of Charles Wilkes' American and Dumont d'Urville's French expeditions. The Ross expedition was the first to go where no human being had gone before. Retiring from the Royal Navy, he was appointed Goldfields Commissioner in Castlemaine during the Victorian gold rushes in 1853. Later, he was elected as a pioneering member of parliament, became a homesteader and gardener and developed a fine reputation as a botanist and naturalist...an extraordinary, but forgotten life.

We all want to live a successful life and George Norris draws on his considerable experience as a successful business mentor, coach, radio presenter and author as he continues to inspire us with wisdom and integrity. Partly based on his successful weekly radio presentations, in ‘Strategies for Success’ George presents a quote then reflects on what it means and how we can apply it to our daily life for inspiration, courage and wisdom to accelerate our success along the way.
Peach Avenel is a broken woman. She thought she had a loving marriage. She thought she would be starting a family. She thought she had a successful career...Peach was wrong. She has a life that no longer fits, filled with broken dreams. When a tumbled down house with a neglected garden comes into her life by serendipitous circumstances, Peach feels something stir within her and although she prefers Jimmy Choo shoes to gum boots, she is drawn to the house and the garden. What unfolds is a story of humour and love. Of cupcakes and cactus. And of a young woman learning about herself and finding out sometimes you need to break open to find who you really are.

No Witness, No Case is about dirty business and dirty politics, greed, corruption and a callous disregard for the environment, the law and the community. A black waste scam is concealed within a legitimate waste business; the business owner is in league with the Mafia; the owner's son is a corrupt and ruthless politician; and the Russians are trying to muscle their way in and oust the Mafia. This is a fast paced story with memorable characters; some you will love, some you will love to hate.

Set in modern-day coastal New South Wales, a part-time university lecturer receives a jolt from the past. Recalling the events leading up to the death of one beautiful girl, his story slowly unfolds, while intertwining with that of another. Who is Krystal, where did she come from, and why did she die? Within the authentically-conveyed lifestyle and conversations of thirty-something professionals, Parkinson captures the essence of desire and grief, with a telling depiction of the descent into depression. Rather than the plot being strewn with clues and red herrings, the story unfolds inexorably to a conclusion that in the end proves cathartic for the main character, but with a few surprises for the reader as well.

An illustrated science‐history graphic novel exploring parallel experiences during WWI. The story takes place on two different physical scales ‐ the macro‐ scale, from the point of view of a Victorian nurse supporting troo ps in the trenches of the Western Front ‐ and simultaneously on the micro‐level, from the point of view of the gut microbes which fight to keep her body alive when she contracts dysentery. This fictional story is based on accurate scientific and historical facts, in consultation with academic experts from Australia, France, UK and the USA.

When Max accidentally leaves the bath running upstairs, nothing could prepare him for the chaos that follows. To make matters worse, he and his family have left the house for the morning and won't be back for several hours. It's not until a half‐time break at Max‛s footy game that he remembers the tap is still running at home. With his parents now at his sister‛s netball grand‐final, Max has no choice but to take some random kid's bike from the footy ground, so he can ride home and hopefully bucket out the water before his parents find out. Will Max make it home in time to save his house from flooding, or will he find himself in serious trouble?

The first book in our series tells the story of Grandad and the Baby Dolphin. This is a true story of a cray‐fisherman from WA who stumbles across a baby dolphin tangled in fishing rope. As the pod take turns helping the baby dolphin to breathe, it becomes clear that the dolphin is drowning. Grandad and his friends decide to solve the puzzle and untangle the ropes, but the pod aren’t sure of Grandad’s intentions. They click and buzz and squeak. They trash and bash and splash. Grandad perseveres and manages to rescue the baby. The pod then squeaks and buzzes and clicks. They jump in and out of the waves, over and under the boat … Grandad and the Baby Dolphin is a children’s picture book intended to be read by young children aged 4 to 7 years. The key themes and emotions in this story are of caring and belonging. It is based within a context of caring for the environment but extends into family (the dolphins) and friendship (Grandad and his friends). This is a true story. There are direct links to the cray fisherman of Western Australia, and in particular the coastal towns around Jurien, Cervantes, Green Head and Lancelin.
Author Information
Hi. I’m Wendy Milner. Proud daughter of Grandad Les Brookes, blogger, copy-writer, strategic marketer & now author. A long time ago I was a barefoot child roaming around the streets of Jurien Bay, jumping off the jetty and riding foam surf-boards behind big crayboats. When I grew up, I found myself working in Perth, Edinburgh (Scotland) and then Melbourne. During my professional career, I worked as a copy-writer and marketing professional for organisations such as Macquarie Private Wealth, Citigroup, JBWere and Hartley Poynton. At that time, my writing focused on client and product communications, strategic campaigns and other marketing related disciplines. Today (some 10 years later), I enjoy a much more rewarding life as a writer and mother of three children. I began writing the Grandad Stories because I made a promise to Dad that my children would know them. You see my sisters and I grew up listening to Dad’s stories about the dolphins, sharks, whales, birds and seals that he came across that day. Some stories likeGrandad and the Baby Dolphin are heart-warming and sweet. Other stories are tense and a little scary, but they were always fun to hear. Grandad and the Baby Dolphin is my first children’s book and my first attempt at writing for fiction. So – welcome to the first of the Grandad stories. I’m super excited to be sharing these stories, not only with my own children, but with you as well.
Illustrator Information
Illustrator Naomi Bulger is a mail-artist who sends miniature paintings through the post to complete strangers, all over the world. See her painted mail gallery atnaomiloves.com/mail-art. When Naomi was a teenager, she and her family lived deep in the Australian bush with no electricity, no running water, and no telephone. Those formative years were centered around sustainability: waking, sleeping, growing, eating, and living in tune with the rhythms of the days and the seasons. They taught her to take creative risks, to be unafraid of the new, and to trust to the secret workings of a world that is much bigger and more mysterious than we comprehend. In 2008, Naomi moved to New York City to find adventure. When she got there, she also found love. Today she lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her husband, their two beautiful and exhausting toddlers, a dog with international stamps on his passport, and the world’s fattest rescue cat. When not illustrating Grandad Stories and making mail-art, Naomi is also a journalist, magazine editor, author, copywriter, and blogger. Her debut novella Airmail was published in April 2011; she is the author of non-fiction books Talk Without Being Interrupted and Seventeen Summers; and was the launch Editor of Nett magazine in Australia. Her personal blog is naomiloves.com. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

The Stroogle is a modern twist to the classic ugly duckling story. The simple rhyming text leads the reader through an adventure of rejection, misunderstanding and sadness to friendship, courage and acceptance. Unlike the traditional story where the swan grows beautiful and is subsequently accepted, the Stroogle is befriended by a rather drab looking mouse. He then has the courage to show his 'true colours' when he leads the mouse on a daring rescue of the garden gnomes from the much larger hungry fox. The Stroogle was written and illustrated by Dr Cameron Stelzer during the year he spent working at the Natural History Museum in London (2002‐03). He was inspired by the many weird and wonderful creatures the museum held in its collection. The character evolved in Cameron's pocket sketch book and everything around him became part of the story. Street buskers became garden gnomes and even stuffed foxes and mice from the museum's collection found their way into the story. A well‐timed visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens provided Cameron with all the garden and farmyard scenes
The Stroogle's New Home is a visual delight with colour and detail on each page. It is an exciting tale about working together and what you can achieve with some clever recycling! The pictures combine with the simple lyrical rhyme to create a truly wonderful journey. With plenty of action and adventure, it is a story that boys especially love. Something is not quite right in the garden. The mouse has a tree stump house and Gretel and Grandpa garden gnome live in mushrooms but the Stroogle has no home of his own. He searches until he finds an old tin can but the farmer throws it in the garbage bin with the four friends inside! Before they can escape they are tipped into the garbage truck and carried far away to the rubbish dump. When all seems hopeless, Grandpa garden gnome hatches a clever plan to get everyone back to the garden by building a car out of rubbish. The friends all work together to create a a wind powered shoe car, complete with a racing stripe! The journey home has a few twists and turns of its own involving three ducklings and a pond. Driving a car with no brakes, the Stroogle and his companions are all lucky to get back in one piece!
The third Stroogle adventure. Unlike the two previous colourful adventures, this story begins with a cold, frozen world, covered with ice. Spring is due two months ago, but all around lies winter snow. The garden gnomes are turning blue and the mouse's cheese is frozen solid. Only the Stroogle is still warm as he flies along on his sled. Throughout this story the Stroogle searches for a way to warm his frozen friends and to transform winter into spring. A visit to the Fairy Godmother's cave reveals that it will take someone very special to warm things up: "When winter's chill is here to stay and snow and ice won't go away it's only with the warmest heart that you can make the springtime start. This story explores what it means to have a warm heart and a caring spirit and how with a few simple gestures, a grey world can be transformed into a colourful paradise. Throughout the story, Cameron has hidden things for the

The Stroogle in Space
The story begins when the Stroogle discovers an old pirate's map in a bottle. Together with his two friends, Gretel and the mouse, the Stroogle sails off on a raft in search of buried treasure. Along the way he meets the dreaded Pie‐Rats and after a skirmish onboard a giant pie ship, he is ordered to walk the plank. Luckily Grandpa Garden Gnome arrives just in time to rescue them in his new submarine. The journey continues underwater, in a cave, through a pie fight and off to treasure island. With an unexpected twist at the end involving some fairy magic, this story is full of humour and will appeal to both boys and girls alike. Once you have read the story, you can go on your own treasure hunt and find over 300 hidden objects throughout the pictures.
The fifth book in the Stroogle series takes the popular hero to a fairytale world of castles, dragons and adventure. Sparky, the Golden Dragon is the adorable new character with a major sneezing problem: The dragon replied, “I am friends with the bees, but pollen from flowers keeps making me sneeze!” “I burn half the forest with every AAACHOO! Oh what in the world am I going to do? After running into a mischievous leprechaun who promises to help them, The Stroogle, the dragon and two comical bumble bees embark on a quest to find three missing ingredients for a medicine to cure the sneeze. Their journey takes them to the top of a wild windy mountain and into a mysterious moonlit castle where secrets await them! In the tradition of the previous Stroogle adventure, there are plenty of things to locate in the watercolour illustrations once you have read the story: These include a puzzle to solve, hidden images from famous fairytales and just for luck, there are 100 four leaf clovers to find!

The ratbag Pie‐Rats make their anticipated return in the Stroogle’s sixth epic adventure, The Stroogle in Space. Six years in the making, this story was inspired by the author’s love of space and presents cosmic facts with a clever dairy twist. After receiving a distress call from outer space, the Stroogle blasts off in his homemade rocket on a rescue mission to the moon: An SOS echoed from high in the heavens; a cry from the Milk‐Bots to come save the day. "The Pie‐Rats have landed. Can anyone save us? They're making a mess of our grand Milky Way!" Outnumbered (but never outsmarted) the Stroogle challenges the Pie‐Rats to the ultimate space showdown; a Milky Way milkshake competition! Watch out for dark chocolate black holes, stinky cheese asteroids and other dairy delights in the galactic search for marvellous milkshake ingredients.

So Ethan asked among his friends, ‘Does everyone get wind?’ Marty laughed, Fizz looked confused, and Sam just quietly grinned. But Little Trixie took offence. ‘Girls don’t fart –okay?! Only boys make bottom noise. We girls aren’t built that way.’ The boys just didn’t believe her, and set themselves a test. To see if girls pass wind or not –that would be their quest. And so begins the hilarious, stinky tale about a smelly little boy named Ethan and his rag‐tag group of friends who are on the hunt to catch a girl that farts. Filled with funny scenes filled with farting unicorns, mermaids and more, this title is sure to delight both boys and girls alike!
