October 2013 New Title Release ‘If God is too indifferent, or too non‐existent to take care of His creation, then clearly it’s up to Me.’ Morgen Tanjenz is a lawyer with an overactive sense of justice. His mission in life is to reward the virtuous, punish the ignorant and avenge those who won’t avenge themselves. His favourite pastime is ‘life sculpture’ — anonymously intervening in the lives of strangers to change their destiny in ways he thinks they deserve. But Morgen isn’t the only one changing lives in the city. A serial killer is on the prowl and taunting the police in letters to the local rag. But, as the body count rises, Detective Sergeant Blacksnake Fowler can hardly focus on the job with so many distractions: his boss hates him, his deputy is trying to undermine him and the woman he loves is having an affair. In the cicada‐throbbing heat of a Sydney summer, the threads of a strange story become entangled in a wild conclusion no one will see coming. ‘a ripsnorter of a ride through the dark heart of the burbs… may just be Australia’s answer to American Psycho.’ Kirsten Krauth, just_a_girl ‘Sometimes funny, sometimes disturbing, and always compelling… with a super‐original premise and a one‐of‐a‐ kind protagonist’. Tony Wilson, Making News ‘A disturbingly good read. Unnerving and darkly comic.’ Stuart Quin, Ealing Studios Australia

October 2013 New Title Release Being Peta provides a brave, honest firsthand account by a young person of what it’s like to live with leukaemia. It is a book that will provide comfort and companionship to sufferers and their loved ones. In the world of cancer, teenagers are renowned for not articulating their feelings about living with their illness. But sixteen‐year‐old Peta Margetts was brave enough to do that: with a wonderful sense of humour as well as an ability to put all of the upheaval into perspective, Peta reflects on the positives amid a regime of chemotherapy. Her rawness and honesty are complemented by her wit and vivacity as she confronts the possibilities that she may die. In Being Peta, she relives her battle with leukaemia after her initial diagnosis. Her reflections illuminate the tedium that hospital life brings and how all of the medical procedures around her were secondary to everything else around her: school, friends, work and, above all, family. While the focus of the book is Peta’s own writing, her mother, Leonie, completes the story through her account of events. Also included in Being Peta are letters from family and friends on how they have been affected by the death of a young girl who was so important to so many people. “Neither of us really believed what we were being told. It wasn’t the end of the treatment, but we had no doubt of the gravity of our situation. […] We went into another room, where we sat and tried to digest the news. Peta grabbed my hand, looked into my eyes and firmly said, ‘I just think there are worse things in the world than a seventeen‐ year‐old girl dying!’ ”

Eyes of Silence is a love story. A story of deep and profound love that endures the tragedies and imperfections of our physical existence. Written with simplicity and clarity, it’s a story that tries to make sense of a bewildering episode in the lives of a couple that can only be described as an emotional maelstrom. The outcome is a startling one: a momentary physical insensibility is overcome by emotional and spiritual courage. This story is an expression of love where the reader is taken on a journey of fear, uncertainty and hope. “This is one of the most moving accounts I have read of a person struggling to come to terms with terrible illness of a loved one. In this account Doug has opened his heart describing his distress and his feelings throughout what was for him and his family a terrible ordeal. Doug’s account however, also has a message of hope, in that he has developed a determination to do all he can personally to help other people in a similar situation”. Subdivisions Victoria has all the information you need to help you through the subdivision process and all that is related to it. It explains the nature of subdivisions and the initial steps involved. There is more detail of the town planning requirements and the process for having a plan registered. Owners corporations and common property and the issues to which they give rise feature prominently. Buying and selling ‘off the plan’ have become commonplace, but carry significant risks. This book will help you step through that particular minefield. There are even some helpful precedent conditions and letters. ‘Not in common ownership’ plans and the further subdivision of land affected by an owners corporation carry their own special challenges. You will be much better equipped to deal with them if you have Subdivisions Victoria. It can serve as both an instruction manual for those new to the area and a valuable reference for those already practising in it. This comprehensive guide to subdivisions is written in a way that is easy to understand. How it is set out makes it simple to follow. About the Author Michael Madigan has been previously involved with the publishing of two compelling books on social injustice in South Australia. “A Reason to Live” by Janet Crease and “Red Tape Rape” by Ki Meekins documented the paedophile influences that stained the Adelaide streets throughout the 1960s and 70s. He grew up in the industrial ‘city of friendly people’, Port Pirie before moving to Adelaide in 1996. He has a love of cricket, the Port Adelaide Football Club, Aboriginal culture and all things Italian.

Michael Madigan's book, The NCA Bombing, is not only a painstaking investigation and analysis of a haunting murder, or assassination, but an admirable piece of work in the national interest. The failure of authorities, state or federal, to bring the perpetrators to justice is in itself a haunting national disgrace. Bob Bottom, author of 11 book on organised crime.

March 2, 1994 will forever be marked as a watershed in the history of Australian crime. The murder of a police officer is a rarity in itself but the ruthless, targeted killing of Detective Sergeant Bowen (National Crime Authority) and the alleged involvement of Australian/Italian Mafia makes it one of the most significant crimes in Australia's history.

October 2013 New Title Release This story, (the first of a trilogy) covers the period in Ireland of The Hampsey family, leading up to the late 50s until their arrival as 10 pound migrants in Australia, November 1960. At that time they were reported to be the largest family to migrate from Ireland or Great Britain. This first book highlights the difficulty of a Catholic family growing up in a predominantly Protestant part of the north of Ireland with its problems of bigotry, sectarianism and unjust, one‐sided laws that left the minority Catholics being treated as second‐class citizens. It covers a period just prior to the first civil rights marches of the early 60s, partly instigated and led by the Mid‐Ulster Firebrand politician Bernadette Devlin and her supporters. This in turn led up to Bloody Sunday in the northern city of Derry where on the 30th January 1972 British soldiers of the Parachute Regiment opened fire and killed fourteen unarmed, protesting Catholic civilians. This conflict or as it was known as a new batch of Troubles was to last for more than 30 years, into the 90s and cost over 3000 lives, mostly Catholic. The story follows the eldest son Seán through his early primary school days into puberty and early manhood. Through his failed attempts to lead a life of normality while living precariously on the edge, not only on the edge of life, but his Catholic faith. By the seat of his pants, so to speak. Even to the point of him and a couple of his brothers doing a stint of time as a guest of Her Majesty. We get a glimpse through their eyes of understanding the political and sectarian life of the six counties of Ulster (The fourth Province), from the in‐depth history of the north. The author, through his first‐hand experience and research, provides a clearer understanding of what it meant to be a Catholic living and attempting to make a life for oneself during these troubled and turbulent times.

This book about writing and the imagination is essential reading for any writer, emerging or experienced. Re‐released with new material and updated advice for the 21st writer. ‘I first read Dear Writer as a nervy, secretive scribbler-in-journals 20 years ago. Reading this revised version I’m struck again by its practical generosity on technical matters but am also inspired by the deeper, more complex conversations I think I missed in those early readings:about courage, about the urgency and mystery and self-discovery of the writing process. Dear Writer Revisited may masquerade –convincingly – a s a book for beginners, but its lessons are mature and wise.’ —Charlotte Wood, The Writer’s Room Interviews

Pat O’Keefe has a less than flawless past. As he lay dying, he overhears a conspiratorial conversation which involves his grandson Jack. Doctors return Pat to health and he knows he needs to turn Jack from his planned course. As he recovers in and later out of the hospital, he attempts to reach out to his grandson in an effort to steer him towards a more moderate, rational stance. In order to reach Jack, the old man begins to reluctantly reveal his own involvement in an anti communist organisation, the Movement, in country New South Wales during the cold war. In his attempt to sway Jack, Pat reveals the extent of his past including several violent incidents culminating in a murder for the cause. Rashid is a second generation Australian frustrated by a sense of exclusion from the only country he knows. Following a visit to his native Lebanon, he discovers his roots and decides he must formulate a plan to help his fellow believers on the other side of the world, by bringing the war to a government he holds responsible for the atrocities of the Iraq war. Within small cells, Rashid is able to organise a myriad of events culminating in an audacious attack. Jack and his long time friend and cricket team member, Amid, form the group implementing the plan. Their commitment to each other, their fellow believers and their loved ones become a complicated tug of war as competing and conflicting events emerge.

Lives of the Papunya Tula Artists chronicles the beginnings of the Western Desert art movement and the phenomenal development of its founding art company over four decades. Through comprehensive and widely research biographies of more than 200 men and women the book illuminates lives balanced between first contact and international stardom, poverty and record auction prices. In the early 1970s, a small group of Western Desert 'painting men' at Papunya in Central Australia seized the opportunity to experiment with new techniques and materials, producing vibrant and innovative works that give enduring expression to their powerful tjukurrpa (Dreamings). In the years since, Papunya Tula Artists Pty Ltd has made a profound contribution to the Western Desert art movement and international contemporary art. Over 25 years in the making, Lives of the Papunya Tula Artists celebrates both the individual lives of the artists and their cooperative endeavour. It showcases the importance of what they share: family and country, significant sites, tjukurrpa and life histories. Illustrated with numerous candid photographs and key artworks, this book charts the historical landscape of the Papunya Tula artists revealing a collective creative achievement of rare genius.

Spotlight on POD How can a person who is a non‐believer get into heaven? This is what happened to the man known as Travesty. He didn’t have one religious bone in his body, yet when he died he ended up in heaven ‐ how's that work? Joshua Hosea invites you to hitch a crazy ride on a journey like no other as you follow Travesty through his trials and tribulations on Earth, as in heaven. He rises quickly through the heavenly ranks to become the Profit T, that’s Profit as opposed to Prophet. This story tells you how the universe was really formed, and what's with this 'Period of Relativity' and 'Accidental Evolution' nonsense? You'll gain first‐hand knowledge as to who really gets into heaven. It's true, God's such a fussy old bugger, he has his own personal 'Natural Selection' process. Charles Darwin never knew about it. Be amazed as God sends Travesty back to Earth to solve the Global Financial Crisis by teaching its people how to gamble their way out of it. I Taught God to Gamble is engaging, quirky, funny, and a story completely out of left field. Strap on your wildest imagination for this read, it’s action packed and hilarious. You’ll be left thinking, ‘If heaven and the afterlife is this good, sign me up immediately.’

Late in 1802 Governor King of New South Wales sent the schooner Cumberland to survey King Island in Bass Strait and Port Phillip to the north of it. The purpose of the survey was to establish whether or not either location might prove a su itable site for a new settlement. The Cumberland ’s party included her commander Charles Robbins, the surveyor Charles Grimes, and James Fleming , a gardener. In January and February 1803 Grimes carried out the first complete survey of Port Phillip, during which his party discovered the Yarra River. Fleming, who kept a detailed journal of the survey, later reported that the land around the river offered ‘the most eligible place for a settlement’, but Grimes’ assessment of Port Phillip was not encouraging, and more than 30 years were to pass before Melbourne was established. Fleming’s journal of the survey is accompanied by Grimes’ field notes and his chart of Port Phillip.

This is a work of fantasy based mostly on people who once existed. Samuel Cohen, the 'I' of the story, was my late father's brother. It is a fair bet that neither he nor my father would have approved of this book. It should have been a very sad story, but that is not how it turned out. In a varied career, studded with bouts of amnesia, Sam is a brothel trout and a prison education officer in Warsaw and a bit player in Bertolt Brecht's theatre in Berlin. In England he is a banjo teacher, a Chassidic spiritualist medium and finally, an inmate. Poor Uncle Sam. Lucky us.

This is a book to change lives, just as John Alexander McQuail did. An illegitimate son of a Melbourne rabbi takes himself on a rutting spree, first through his school mates' mums , then through the south Pacific, then through Sydney and ends up in London. Somewhere along the way he manages to get married three times, father some children, found an entirely new religion, become an international celebrity, get sweatily involved with a Queensland politician and get deported from the USA. A likely story. All right, it may not change your life, but it's a bloody good read.

Strawberries with Everything brings a new tone to political memoirs. How did a nice Jewish boy finish up in a place like Poland? In sometimes hilarious detail, Steve Brook describes his early years in prewar London, the emigration of his family to Australia, and his eventual Aussification. While still in his teens, he gets a heavy dose of Left politics. After a holiday in Poland, via London, he is offered a job at the Polish Radio in Warsaw. He spends eight years on the wrong side in the Cold War, with a ringside seat at some of the most significant events in European history including the Warsaw Dog Show, the "anti‐Zionist" uproar of 1968 and the Soviet‐led invasion of Czechoslovakia the same year. He returns to Australia in 1974 and after numerous Candide‐like adventures, he finds himself wondering if it was all worthwhile. Of course it was.

It is 1998. In Indonesia, Suharto has gone and Megawati Sukarnoputri has not yet arrived as President. Back in Australia, Arnold Gold, married, two teenage children, wants to write a satire on pornography. But he feels constrained by the domestic demands of suburban Melbourne, and rents a room in Kuta, Bali. Now at last he can devote all his time to "Monica's Mouth". But of course, it is not to be. His new life is increasingly taken up by Dutch tourists, Australian Greeks, some decidedly odd religious fringe‐dwellers and a beguiling local lady, who threatens to pull out the rug from under his existing marriage. Through her he also gets mixed up with Indonesian politics, the Australian media and a bloke he once thought of as a good friend. "Monica's Mouth" slips further and further into the background and Arnold breaks through into a completely new dimension. It could happen to anyone.

In the recent past, Australia is governed by John Hurward and his Conservative Coalition. Rick Arrowsmith's spare time hobbies are a jazz programme on community radio 3VP, known to some as the Voice of Terror, and messing about with nubile young ladies on the Internet. He helps found a new social movement whose aim is to topple the anti‐Hurward forces in Australia. Its first base is 3VP, but it soon outgrows its parent. The US, in the grip of the fundamentalist Christain Right, decides to invade Catholic Poland as a threat to its Protestant security. The Hurward government supports this move without even being told. You know what happens next, of course. This book re‐defines the verb to rollick.

Take a knotty murder mystery, add a dash of revolutionary nostalgia, mix in a few appeals to enlarge your penis and / or breasts, and you have Death by Teatowel, the latest eye‐brow lifter from the author who brought you McQuail, Bali Sugar, Now Hit Enter, For Sam and Strawberries With Everything.
In The Media Are human industrial carbon dioxide emissions causing dangerous global warming? If it is so then climate change surely is one of the great moral challenges of our time. But is it possible that the so‐called consensus science around anthropogenic global warming produced by lavishly funded research institutes and with its own international political lobby organization—the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)—is wrong? Could it be that the emperor has no clothes? Accessible, clearly written and illustrated with simple scientific illustrations, and accompanied by brilliantly wry and telling cartoons, Taxing Air answers — without the spin, evasions or propaganda that pollutes most official writing on climate change — every question you have about global warming but are too intimidated by the an oppressive ‘consensus’ to ask. Your essential guide to the science and politics of global warming. Taxing Air is an outstanding contribution to the growing literature that examines and calls to account the climate alarmism of the past two decades. Dr. Art Raiche, CSIRO Chief Research Scientist (retired) I could not put this book down … the authors have highlighted every facet of the worldwide scam that is Man‐Made Warming. Filled with passion, beauty and truly gorgeous photographs, this delightful book is about an extraordinary and unique garden and the trials and tribulations experienced by those living in it: Derelie, Bob, Jessee and Trudy. By 1999 Bob, plant hunter and breeder extraordinaire, was divorced and looking for a new wife. Derelie was happily ensconced in book publishing and not looking for a husband. But fate intervened and decided to introduce the pair at the Melbourne International Flower Show that year. A few months later Derelie left the world of books forever and took up residence in Paradise. Daily life changed dramatically and two dogs, both presents from Bob, became an integral part of the household and her daily routine. As well, the garden began to visibly change, especially in the direction of roses, Derelie's favourite flower.

Cold Chisel are icons of Australian rock. Their 2011 'Light the Nitro' Tour sold more than 280,000 tickets, more than their own 'Last Stand' farewell tour and more than Powderfinger or John Farnham's final tours. They have sold more albums since they first broke up than they did before. Khe Sanh, When the War is Over, Cheap Wine, Choir Girl, Flame Trees, Saturday Night, Forever Now... are songs that are a part of our culture. The book, Wild Colonial Boys details the band's history from their cover band days in Adelaide and their struggle to breakthrough in Sydney through to their US and European tours. Included are the stories behind the songs you know, and the songs you don't. More than 2000 shows are documented along with setlists and reviews. Meticulously compiled from management notes, numerous interviews with every band member, band employees, record company executives, producers and a myriad of other sources, Wild Colonial Boys is, in the words of Cold Chisel manager Rod Willis, 'The Bible on Cold Chisel' *FIRM SALE

Have you ever felt like running away? In Without Me? a small child resolves to runaway but minute‐by‐minute reasoning raises questions about the impact. Gradually reneging he begins a pied piper walk resulting in all he ran from joining him. A humorous story that confirms the message: we belong in family. Much happens in a growing child’s mind as they navigate their identity and process emotion. Without Me introduces escapism and decision reasoning. It is a light‐hearted story with an important message of security‐belonging. Children will enjoy relating to being a small but significant part of a family.
