Words from the Wise It is the tense time of year as we build the list for Christmas 2015 and New Year 2016. Expectations, accolades, disappointment, money, print orders. Planning for the man hours to list, sell, invoice, pick, pack, despatch. And the book cycle goes on for one of the best second halves we have seen for a while. Then the anguish – “has Christmas buying started”?, will it be a “late Christmas”? what books do we push into 2016? Is the playing field level? Are there new business ventures looming? Is Canberra going to be kind to us or make business more complex? How does the adult colouring book craze create more consumers? Or, will they dilute our book offering? Plenty to think about and consider how to create value. As for our books it is a time of great hope; plenty of authors and the scope of media and appearances has never been so broad. Mary Gaunt 9781922129369 (Publisher; Melbourne Books) This has been picked by the Huffington Post for some media later this month; the “Huff Post” has something like 150,000,000 unique hits per month and will lead to this book being discovered by consumers globally. She was a person who was not really appreciated by her fellow country men and women so she went offshore to find her life and her unique story. Born in Chiltern, Victoria, also spending time in Ballarat where she died!!!!! We are fortunate to have printed stock on hand, plus a global (ex Australia) print on demand edition and an eBook for those inclined that way. I suppose if Bill Bryson sells film rights this could be the way this subject is heading. As luck has it we also have another book on Mary Gaunt – this time only an eBook To the Ends of Earth (ePub) 9781742984070. I found a review on this book by an old friend who owned a shop in Hamilton - http:// www.bluestonemagazine.com.au/2014/12/14/rediscovering-lostauthor-mary-gaunt/ Solomon’s Noose 9781922129741 (Publisher; Melbourne Books) From one big island to a small island to an island near France. We will attend the launch of Steve Harris’ book at Readings Hawthorn next week, Steve then goes to Tasmania for appearances at Petrarchs and then Fullers before he goes to Oxford UK for early October. To support global demand we have an offset edition locally, two POD versions for overseas (a paperback edition and a cased edition) and sell as an eBook. If you have not read it please ask me for a reading copy to be sent.
Derryn Hinch (Publisher; Cocoon Lodge) I met with Derryn this week to review the progress of his new book The Hinch Jail Diary. I have since been delivered the first 25,000 words and expect the book to be completed by mid October. It may be ambitious aiming at mid November; why not? This work will not be going into an offset print run; we will utilise the POD resources to keep stock on hand matched to demand. The POD printer (Lightning Source) is in Scoresby and we can get a fresh printing in a matter of days. The eBook will be available as a simultaneous release. We are also hopeful to be able to have Derryn’s fiction titles – Death in Newport and Death in Paradise available for our Vacation Reading release in January 2016. Seems crazy that I first met Hinch when we took over A&R (in the Harper days) and did author signing sessions in 1989. By the way - he has now passed 1500 days since he underwent liver transplant surgery. Susanna de Vries (Publisher; Pirgos Press) Royal Love Triangle – Charles, Diana, Camilla: The Full Story Reassessed Finally we have the edited file for this long awaited book; it now goes through the design stage where the illustrations are put into the working file. It is with sadness that we also have to advise that Susanna’s husband of some 30 years, Jake, has passed away. He suffered for a long time and now the suffering has ceased. We are thinking of either an efficient offset quantity or the just in time POD stocked method. And of course a POD version for the US & UK, plus eBook. Going to be fascinating to see the Brits and the Americans pick this up. The Secret of Picnic at Hanging Rock It is the 40th anniversary of the film and Tom Thompson at Editions Tom Thompson has the rights to this work. As soon as we get the file we will determine in association with the publisher what versions we will have. The Beaumont Children - 50 years of mystery and misery Looking ahead we are also distributing the latest book on the Beaumont Children as it is 50 years since the disappearance from Glenelg Beach in South Australia – the author is Michael Madigan. On a non book note I have to advise I have written to our local federal member to get a better explanation of the mooted online tax collection from imported product from online suppliers. So far no answer – I don’t think it has been thought through with a deep understanding of how GST and Tax Collection works; does not surprise me as it is in part fantasy to be able to “tax” those imports utterly. Best wishes and thanks for the support! Dennis Jones

Drive down St George's Road in North Fitzroy on the evenings the Soup Bar is open and you'll find a queue stretching out the door and around the corner. With its brightly coloured interior, refreshing spoken menu and flavourful Moroccan cuisine, The Soup Bar over the past 16 years has become a Melbourne institution. More than just a restaurant, the Moroccan Soup Bar is founded on a philosophy, what Hana describes as 'a vision whose primary objective was not monetary, where everyone who visited, whether a one‐time visitor or repeat customer, felt their senses were stimulated...to share experiences, and walk away a little changed as a consequence.' Hana, head cook and owner, is releasing a cookbook of the wonderful vegetarian dishes served every night at the restaurant. Her devoted customers have sought the secrets of her recipes, in particular the famed chickpea bake, a dish so delicious it's won awards. Now the public will have the chance to recreate these beautiful, flavoursome recipes in their own homes. There's even a recipe for the restaurant's wall paint, passed down to Hana from her father. The book reflects the atmosphere of the Soup Bar ‐ warm, welcoming and colourful. The recipes prove you don't need to include meat in a meal to make it taste delicious. Laced with stories of meetings at the Soup Bar, of the plight of women, of Moroccan culture and of hope for a more inclusive future, Hana's book will provide a colourful, spiced oasis in any enthusiastic cook's recipe book collection.

Drama and beauty abound on the plains of Africa, and in this superb collection of images, Australian photographers Kym and Tonya Illman present an intimate insight into Earth’s greatest wilderness. This lavish book is the result of thousands of hours spent on safari in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The Illmans’ innovative, and sometimes controversial, approach includes cameras buried at the edges of waterholes, mounted on aerial drones and on remote‐controlled buggies, with many lost to lions and elephants in the process. They have spent days concealed in photographic hides to capture low‐level shots and have chartered helicopters to photograph wildlife and vistas not accessible by land. Each photograph is accompanied by the fascinating story behind its capture. In the final section the Illmans discuss the various elements that ensure a successful safari, from both a sightseeing and photographic viewpoint. This splendid collection of photographs is an unforgettable record of Africa in all its untamed beauty and raw emotion. From the brutality of the food chain to playful shots of animals at their most uninhibited, from majestic sunsets to brooding landscapes, there is no greater theatre than nature itself.
Author Information Kym and Tonya Illman are passionate and innovative wildlife photographers. They own an audio production business in Perth, Western Australia, but their love of Africa’s landscapes and wildlife has led them to spend around three months a year photographing in Africa using a range of photographic aids and techniques including quadcopters, remote‐controlled camera buggies, and buried or hidden cameras. Their unconventional approach has yielded fascinating angles, spectacular images and some wonderful stories.

There is a touch of irony in the fact that Moonee Valley Racing Club’s W.S. Cox Plate, billed as ‘Australasia’s weight‐ for‐age championship’, honours a man whose biggest race success was in a Handicap. Farmer cum racing entrepreneur, William Samuel Cox, won the 1875 Sydney Cup with Imperial, but it is because of his acumen as a racing administrator ‐ and his role in developing the proprietary Moonee Valley racetrack on a former farm ‐ that the race carries his name. First run in 1922, and worth £1,000, the W.S. Cox Plate played second fiddle ‐ in value and status ‐ to the Moonee Valley Cup for more than 30 years, despite its honour roll of early winners including outstanding horses such as Nightmarch, Phar Lap, Chatham, Ajax, Tranquil Star, Flight and Hydrogen. It was not until 1956 that the Cox Plate Stake was elevated above that of the Moonee Valley Cup. Since then, the race has grown enormously in value (it was worth $3 million in 2002) and reputation. However, despite the massive shift in value and status of the race, there is one constant.

Bumbling Mangoland academic, Professor Dr Grafton Everest, has been elected to the Australian Senate, without really knowing why, and due to the influx of weird Independents, finds himself holding the balance of power. Despite this, his personal life is a train wreck. A prostatectomy has left him impotent, his daughter is staging a theatrical event with an outlaw motorcycle gang and he suspects his wife is planning to have him put to sleep. On top of it all, Australia is facing natural disaster from Tectonic Change. Can Grafton save his family, his country and himself? Grafton Everest is a wonderful creation whom I would place without question in the ranks of Philip Roth's Portnoy and Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim. – Barry Humphries Grafton Everest [is] a slob making Les Patterson seem a class act. Broad comedy, very rude and, for anyone liking gleefully scabrous humour, very funny as well. – The Daily Mail (London) Author Information Ross Fitzgerald AM, political commentator, biographer, novelist, historian and broadcaster, is Emeritus Professor of History and Politics at Griffith University. Professor Fitzgerald is the author of 38 books, including four other Grafton Everest fictions. His memoir My Name is Ross: An Alcoholic’s Journey, published by New South Press Sydney, is available as an ebook and a Talking Book, published by Vision Australia. He lives in Redfern, Sydney. Ian McFadyen has been writing for stage, radio, film and television for over forty years. Best known as the creator of the very popular The Comedy Company and other TV series, Ian is also an actor, director and teacher who now devotes much of his time to painting. He attributes his interest in politics to his original training as a criminologist. He currently lives in Brisbane.

A baby is born on the day Stalin signed a pact of nonaggression with Hitler. Poland is divided and World War II looms. As Warsaw burns, a woman escapes with her husband‐to‐be and their newborn baby to a small town in Soviet territory just across the border. She finds work in a military hospital, but soon finds herself fleeing again with twenty injured soldiers she has to care for. Separated from her future husband, Ola and her child Halinka become prisoners of war. For years following the deaths of her parents, Halina Rubin avoided looking inside the two boxes filled with letters, papers, photographs and notebooks. Seventy years later, she travels with her daughter back to the places of her mother's past, trying to understand what determines our behaviour in extreme situations. She sees her mother as a woman who, in the direst of circumstances and facing death at every turn, adhered to her moral code and never abandoned those who depended on her. Many Holocaust narratives detail stories of immense suffering and loss; this book tells the raw yet heartwarming story of active opposition to the Nazi oppressors.
Author Information Halina Rubin was born in Warsaw just as Germany invaded Poland. Her family fled to the Soviet Union where she and her mother survived together, against all odds. In 1968, in response to government‐instigated anti‐Semitism, she emigrated to Australia and settled in Melbourne. She qualified as a microbiologist, specialising in virology. In 2001, moved to action by the plight of asylum seekers, she started writing to young people incarcerated in Nauru. Since then Rubin has been an active advocate for refugees.

AVAILABLE NOW My Normal Life: Bound is a collection of thirty stories from people with disabilities talking about disability. These thoroughly engaging stories – told by people who are not victims nor heroes succeeding against all odds – will challenge your perception of disability and what it is to have a normal life. As a teacher of some twenty odd years, Gaynor Spriggs felt that she had a reasonably good understanding of disability, having in that time encountered a range of students with special needs. However, while interviewing people for My Normal Life: Bound, she made the startling discovery that her understanding was at best superficial. The everyday people in this book each have their own particular set of challenges that we would traditionally label as ‘disabled’. What becomes very clear is that each person is more than the sum of their challenges and that their attitude to life can have everything ‐ or nothing ‐ to do with their disability. Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly. ‐ Mortisha Addam

Let no one think this is simply a human version of Wine Dogs. It’s a great deal more than that; Bernadette is a superb photographer with great imagination, a great sense of humour, and writes with flair. Every photograph and its accompanying story is a joy to look at and to read. It’s hard to say more, so compelling are the images. One wouldn’t normally expect to use the words ‘page turner’ (more often used for a well written crime thriller), but once you open the book, you will be swept along through to the finish. ‐ James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion True Stories: Portraits of Barossa Winemakers is a collection of photographic portraits of winemakers with their hobbies – an insight into their personality, beyond their wine brand. Accompanying each image I have written a story reflecting the conversations we had during the photo sessions and each winemaker has also contributed their own piece. The photographic style and theme allowed the winemakers to comfortably be themselves and reveal not just who they are, but interesting tales about themselves as well. The narrative shares those stories in the same whimsical, relaxed fashion in which they were first discussed. As a collective, the characters in this book display a snap shot of a section of today’s Barossa culture.

DO YOU HAVE BIG DREAMS AND BIG PLANS, BUT LACK THE RESOURCES TO PURSUE THEM? DO YOU FIND YOURSELF SAYING “IF ONLY I HAD THE MONEY…” ARE YOU TOO EMBARRASSED TO ASK OTHERS FOR HELP? In her best‐selling book Daring & Disruptive and its sequel Life & Love, serial entrepreneur Lisa Messenger shared the business insights gathered in more than a decade of success across multiple industries, including how to identify your true purpose, pinpoint your passions and create the working life most only dream of. But, let’s be honest, you need the means to make it all happen. In her latest book, she tackles a topic with a stigma – money! What would you do if money was no object, how can anyone find profit in the impossible and – her personal bugbear ‐ when will “gunnas” stop using lack of money as an excuse for not stepping out of their comfort zone and pursuing their purpose? Mixing advice from mentors, experts and famous role models, with lessons learned in her own entrepreneurial journey, Lisa reveals how she built a global brand, and launched a magazine sold in 37 countries, without having to borrow a single cent from a bank. This is from a woman who, years before, could barely afford to buy toothpaste. In the self‐deprecating manner that has become her trademark style, Lisa shares her own journey, clearly stating she is not a guru when it comes to finances, but has used fresh thinking and creative ideas to fuel a burgeoning business. She will help you appreciate your real value,

Landcare is a local movement that provides national benefits. This emphasis on local action is at the heart of the Landcare movement's success - farmers and landcarers know what works best for their farms, their regions and their community. Another critical factor in the movement's enduring success has been Landcare's partnership approach and ability to get all parts of the community to contribute in some way to its work. It's about local people - whether they're farmers, landowners, environmentalists, school kids or city people - all coming together for a common cause: finding practical solutions to fix local problems.

If we do not remember our childhoods do they still exist? Shifting is the true story of two children growing up in the aftermath of the Second World War. Attracted like a law of nature, Serge, a boy born in northern Italy and Helen, a girl born in Australia are inextricably drawn to each other in a changing world. A social history of the west of Melbourne in the 1950s‐1960s, it is also a unique love story. This collaborative autobiography, told from a male and female perspective, explores the dynamics of family life, the importance of place and cultural dislocation in shaping identity. Understated and simply told, this is an evocative narrative about the emotional, social and psychological changes of two individuals maturing into adulthood. A fine and impressive work. It is accomplished at a high literary standard, with an acute understanding of the way fictive‐literary stratagems can be incorporated in an autobiographical work to achieve an engaging and richly rewarding text for the reader.’ ‐ Kevin Brophy The vivid and detailed recreation of the texture of the decades through which the characters live is one of the strengths of the novel. ‐ Jeri Kroll
Author Information Helen Cerne is a Melbourne writer who has published short stories, poems and articles in many Australian literary magazines - Meanjin, Overland, Hecate, the Age, Famous Reporter. AVAILABLE NOW This is the story of an extraordinary job, in an extraordinary place. As one of the rangers, Michael Anderson was there to eradicate the cats and control the rabbits. Feral cats, European rabbits, black rats and house mice were introduced to Macquarie Island back in the sealing days. Sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island is a thin sliver of land cast adrift amidst the world’s greatest ocean, 1500 kilometres south east of Hobart, Tasmania. The plateau that stretches most of the length of the island slopes steeply to narrow coastal terraces and storm-lashed, rocky shores. The climate is vicious: an average 280 days of strong wind a year, 90 days at gale force. On most days some form of precipitation falls, whether rain, drizzle, hail or snow. In summer the island is home to around four million penguins and tens of thousands of seals, as well as albatrosses and several species of burrow-nesting seabirds. This book is both the personal response of a ranger working to eliminate feral cats in a most challenging environment, and a philosophical probing into this “feral dilemma”. The book immerses the reader in a world of sub-zero temperatures, gales, stink and struggle contrasted with the glory of an aurora or the majesty of an albatross. The narrative is immediate, raw and colourful, yet sometimes also lyrical. It is a marriage of science and poetry, told by a man who has fallen in love with a wild island.—Janet Fenton, author of Win & Clyde

On 8th April 181, the ship Friends sailed from England carrying 101 female convicts bound for the penal colony that was New South Wales. The crimes of the women and girls on board ranged from pickpocketing to murder, but most were convicted of theft. Susannah Noon, not yet in her teens, tried to steal four pairs of cotton stockings from a shop in Colchester. It earned her a sentence of transportation for seven years' 'beyond the seas'. It was a sentence that reverberated throughout her lifetime; she never returned to England. What drove most of these women, young and old, to crime was what helped them to shape new lives in New South Wales ‐ the will to survive. The newly invented society they found themselves in was, in effect, that of an 'open prison'. In 1811, there were only one hundred women in New South Wales who had not arrived as convicted felons. Susannah and her Friends shipmates were free to work and marry. Most of them grabbed the chance for respectability and, in doing so, they became part of the unexpected phenomenon that was transforming a penal outpost to thriving colony. Author Elsbeth Hardie knew nothing of these women when she went in search of them. Susannah and the others remained largely silent and invisible to history. In uncovering their stories, she provides a little‐known account of the convict system that prevailed in the early years of transportation to New South Wales and how these women fared. Susannah's journey would take her on to yet another new life in a whaling station in New Zealand, some years before the arrival of that country's first organised colonists. Her story becomes that of the shore‐based whaling industry that drew hardened men from around the world to the southern seas and the families they gained. Later still, Susannah becomes a firsthand witness to the events that led to the fight at the Wairau between the land-grabbing New Zealand Company and Te Rauparaha and his followers.

She is a graduate of the inaugural Creative Writing honours degree course at the University of Auckland. Elsbeth lives in Auckland but maintains strong ties to the South Island where she grew up.

AVAILABLE NOW Joy Nason was born into an English working class family during World War Two and raised in the fundamentalist Christian cult of the Exclusive Brethren. Growing up in this strict and demanding world, her family migrated to Australia in the 1950s. In her early 20s, Joy made the courageous decision to flee her family, knowing that she would be cut off from that moment on. Slowly but surely Joy made her way in the world, with kind employers who encouraged her to gain skills, and friends who helped her with socialising, travel and a new‐found enjoyment of life. Through many jobs and disappointing liaisons, to finally becoming a mother of a baby boy, Joy picks herself up after each failure and faces the world with determination and a positive attitude. Joy finally entered the world of education – denied her by her sect – and attained teaching degrees, through which she became Senior Head Teacher at New South Wales TAFE. With Joy & Sorrow, Joy made the decision to go public with her life and experiences, partly to give inspiration to others trapped in similar situations, but also to add to the body of evidence exposing the hypocrisy of the Exclusive Brethren. This secretive sect, now re‐branded the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, will stop at nothing to maintain their Charitable status – and keep their tax‐free millions.

AVAILABLE NOW Mountain Men tells the stories of ten men who lived, worked and played in the Tasmanian high country from 1870 to 1990. Hunters, mineral prospectors, guides, rangers and tourism operators, horse riders and walkers, they all played a role in the development of nature tourism and recreation in the Cradle Mountain‐Lake St Clair region. More than just a collection of biographies, the book creates a compelling narrative of the European history of today's central highlands. Dan Griffin (1851–1925), William Aylett (1863–1952), Gustav Weindorfer (1874–1932), Paddy Hartnett (1875–1944), Bert Nichols (1878–1950), Ron Smith (1881–1969), Lionel Connell (1884–1960), Dick Reed (1898–1990), Ray ‘Boy’ Miles (1918– 1978) and Basil Steers (1927–1997). Author Information Listening to the stories told by my grandfather as a child awakened an interest in history—particularly of the Tasmanian high country, that has been with me most of my life. Academic study of history at university and some good teachers sharpened that interest and helped me develop the tools and the perspectives to explore it deeper. While never a professional historian, history writing has been an enduring passion, a hobby of sorts, that has captivated me over the decades. I have never tired of writing about the mountains. Family connections to hunters and mountain cattlemen created that initial connection to place that I strengthened through countless bushwalking, horseriding and family trips. The Upper Mersey valley is my country, the crucible of my identity. Hundreds of kilometers away, cocooned in the city, I smell it, I breathe it, I travel through it in my mind. It is my magnificent obsession and I count myself very fortunate to have had and to continue to have such a connection. Retired, I now have the time to indulge my passion. I hope to write often, looking for ways to tell those stories collected from a lifetime of research. - Simon Cubit

TAS Author Historic Tasmanian Mountain Huts Through the Photographic Lens
The introduction of portable dry plate cameras in the late 1870s marked the beginning of a golden age of Tasmanian landscape photography. With cameras on their backs, adventurers explored the wilds of Tasmania, recording not just the dramatic physical features they found but also the typically rough shelters of the miners, hunters, stockmen and piners who lived or worked in the bush. In this beautiful book Simon Cubit and Nic Haygarth use this rich photographic heritage as the basis for a series of extraordinary stories about human enterprise in the Tasmanian highlands.

50 Years On "The truth must be found out and it must be told. Otherwise the people of Australia will repudiate this parliament forever." John Jess J. 1967 (Jess J. (1967) CPD 16 May) When one hears the words Voyager Royal Commission, the first thing that comes to mind is "whitewash." John Jess described the first book ever written about Voyager by Admiral Hickling as "clearly piercing the darkness." John Jess, Seeker of Justice goes a step further. This book is not an interpretation of history. It is history being allowed to speak for itself. In his own words, which Liberal parliamentarian Edward St John termed "the voice of Truth which can never be still or silenced" John Jess sheds even more light upon the collision between HMAS Melbourne and HMAS Voyager in 1964, which was the greatest tragedy in Australian peacetime history. A re‐examination of the first royal commission, particularly the prohibited publication pages of transcript, sheds light on the collision and the conclusion proposes a reason for the collision that has never previously been advanced. No book comes closer to solving the mystery of this tragedy that cost eighty‐two lives. No book has word for word the conversations that went on behind closed doors between politicians and prime ministers and the pressures and influences that existed between the powers that be. Author Information Elizabeth McCarthy was born in Melbourne in 1960. She studied visual art at Prahran College, Melbourne, graduating with a Diploma in Art and Design, in 1981. She did further studies at the National Gallery School, Melbourne, with two National Gallery scholarships, graduating in 1983 with a postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art and awarded National Gallery of Victoria School Acquisitive Prize. In 1985 she travelled to study art galleries in the UK, Europe, USA and Canada,, in particular the work of Vincent Van Gogh. From 1988 she lived and worked in far west NSW teaching art at TAFE colleges and outreach centres in Aboriginal communities. She has been selected in three national acquisitive awards for drawing. She was the inaugural winner of the Far West Award for Excellence in Visual Arts in 2003. She continued her studies at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, NSW, graduating as Master of Arts in 2003. She lives in Geelong, Victoria, with her husband and her sons from her first marriage, James and Jack. After her father passed away in 2003 she decided to put her art career on hold and write the story of her father’s fight for justice.

AVAILABLE NOW Despite commonly held misconceptions, Australian football has been played in Queensland for a long time. With a historian's approach and a story‐teller's style, Murray Bird describes how footy started in The North in 1866 and explains how the many personal links with The South kicked it along. His thorough research has uncovered some remarkable nineteenth century characters who, having fallen in love with the local code, were acting on their heartfelt desire to make footy the national game. It's a terrific yarn, and my favourite type of history, at once informative and entertaining. ‐ John Harms founder of www.footyalmanac.com.au

Through a wealth of vivid stories, Internet Wars explores the big questions about how the Internet is disrupting the world as we have known it, and how the world must build new understandings in response. A fascinating and compelling argument about a major new global challenge. – Hugh White, Professor of Strategic Studies, The Australian National University Internet Wars thoughtfully portrays how power structures are being twisted, bent and broken by people and institutions who are Internet-smart. – Alec Ross, Senior Advisor for Innovation to the then-Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton In the last decade, a radical new network has begun to fully manifest itself; the largest political and economic arena the world has ever known: the internet. For those who can master it the promise of political, economic, and military power is extraordinary. Yet, the dramatic contest for control currently underway is often obscured by our prosaic everyday online activity. At a distance though it is unmistakable. Already, exploitation of this new super-network has helped create the world’s most valuable company, toppled governments, led to the largest wealth transfer in history, and created the most extensive global surveillance system ever known. All of humankind is on track to become linked through this single, universal platform but the full implications for state sovereignty, corporate power and human rights have not yet been grasped. The internet has created daunting challenges that have been allowed to go unaddressed: cyber warfare, industrial online theft, burgeoning monopoly power and eroding privacy. We are fast approaching a turning point where action is needed if the most dynamic features of the internet are to be preserved. There is an urgent need to understand the broad currents of the internet’s growth if we are to secure its vitality and promise into the future. Internet Wars is a call to action for a more informed debate about a contest to control the internet that will profoundly affect us all for generations to come. It looks at the three epicentres of online contest: people power, government power, and economic power. Fergus Hanson breaks down the dynamics at play in each of these critical areas and finds the human narratives that tell the emerging story about the internet’s transformation of our lives.

'I hope I'm not interrupting. You were at the river today. My name is Ruth Dempster, or Ruthie if you like. You haven’t lived here long.' She then turned and pointed across the road. 'I live over there.' In the year 1953 Harry Demitriou leaves his troubled homeland Cyprus and sets sail for Australia with nothing more than a borrowed suitcase and a few shillings. His young and beautiful wife Martha is reluctant to leave her tiny remote village to join him, for to do so would only deprive her of the people intimately attached to her heart. But the cruel gossip of the other villagers will inevitably destroy her life. Harry settles in the Victorian town of Green‐Mount after three years of toiling in the Snowy Mountains. He is welcomed by his neighbours, including the chic and youthful English teacher and war widow Ruth Dempster. In 1956, Martha and her young daughter Lucinda are reunited with Harry in Australia, but by this time tragedy has already torn their family apart.

AVAILABLE NOW Tasmania is in trouble. While mainland Australia surges through the backwash of the GFC the island state is struggling. Political infighting, bureaucratic ineptitude and a lack of investment have curtailed progress. Too many people are lodging on ‘Struggle Street’. D.I. John Mahoney knows this as well as anyone. Of more immediate concern to him is the brutal murder of a prominent business leader. The scale of public interest is high and the Serious Crimes Squad must make headway fast. As the investigation proceeds it becomes clear that whoever is behind the barbarity is sending a message to the whole community. Another homicide quickly follows and pressure mounts as they seek to unravel the trail of clues. As Mahoney deals with fissures in his personal life and generational change in the police force he must call on his full array of investigative skills to get a result. Praise for the D.I. Mahoney series This novel ticks all the boxes. It's clever, relevant, well-written and it has momentum. Brown has developed a tough, uncompromising character in Detective Inspector Mahoney. - Warren Brewer, Hobart Mercury Also by S J Brown High Beam

Something is very rotten in the state of Tasmania. Brad Finch, the marquee player of the Tassie Devils Football Club, is the victim at the heart of a new murder mystery. Intense media scrutiny, interfering superior officers, and corrupt business interests all threaten to derail the homicide investigation conducted by the Serious Crimes Squad. Forensic analysis, dogged detective work, and inspiration may prove insufficient in the search for the true perpetrators. The team must face unpalatable truths about the nature of professional sport and the exercise of power in modern Australian society. Detective Inspector John Mahoney, the hero of this international crime series of police procedurals, is an outsider in his hometown of Hobart. Disillusioned by his private life and shocked by the corruption he unearths, he queries his capacity to continue in the job. He must decide if he has the courage to "speak truth to power"

Short Eternities is not one poetry collection, but eight ‐ a sequence that sums up the calculated insight and undying optimism of poet James Martin. From the warm touch of Autumn Leaves to the cutting but playful Sixty Sexy Sonnets, the 220 poems contained herein encapsulate the sum total of the poet’s worldview. With verses that balance philosophy, religion and humour ‐ alongside pen portraits of friends and personal influences (alongside cats) ‐ Short Eternities digs deep for its emotional centre but always remains accessible, and always betrays the author’s unquenchable enthusiasm for compassion and love.
Author Information Brisbane‐born in 1966, James Martin graduated with a Master’s degree in German literature and philosophy from Melbourne University. He has devoted much leisure time to the study of chess, while developing a love for European languages, including French and Spanish. He has travelled widely throughout Australia, and now calls Melbourne home.

Rather like siblings, the French and the English either compete or collaborate within the family. However, when confronted by outsiders they unite. During the 18th Century educated French and English spoke both languages. Gilbert Rochefort the fictitious hero, arrives in the Great South Land for personal reasons and his fictitious English counterparts, Katherine and Philip Broughton, form the nucleus of this storyline. Rochefort meets real French characters in Melbourne introduced by the French Consul, Lionel de Moreton de Chabrillan. It is a tale about people anxious to create or experience life unfettered by national tradition or convention. Escapees, adventurers arrive by choice or chance. Historically, events are exposed that have been supressed, hidden or simply forgotten. Arriving in Melbourne Rochefort finds it unsympathetic to climate and situation, inhabitants appear bent on recreating that which they’d left behind and this motivates him to try Van Diemen’s Land. The Great Bookie Robbery of 1976 is one of the most notorious armed robberies Australia has ever known. It is also one of the most mysterious in recent history, with official facts blurred together with theory and wild rumours. Just how many millions of dollars was stolen on the day? And what became of the members of the crew that pulled off the daring heist? As the son of the robbery’s mastermind, Mark Lee Bennett has spent years not only researching the Great Bookie Robbery, but the history of his own family and the way his father and uncle came to be the career criminals wanted by police and rivals alike. The result is a piece of history as seen through the lives of developing criminals in the Melbourne underworld. Part true crime, part family biography and part memoir, this is the story of the Great Bookie Robbery as you’ve never read it before.
The Great Bookie Robbery of 1976 wasn’t just one of the biggest heists in Australian history. It was also a curse. On the robbers and their families; on the law enforcement unit that sought answers; on the victims the aftermath left in its wake. Following on from the story of the Great Bookie Robbery as written by Mark Lee Bennett, the illegitimate son of career criminal Ray Chuck Bennett, this is the follow‐up of what happened to the survivors, and the families of notorious criminals now known for pulling off one of the biggest heists in Australian history. Where the Great Bookie Robbery itself is a story of criminals and record‐breaking heists, this is a story of the tragedy and bloodshed that can come as a result of crime.
This memoir from the son of notorious gunman and career criminal Ray Chuck Bennett is more than a recitation of one’s lifetime. It is the journey of a man carrying a dark secret, unknown even to himself. Mirrors of Death is a tribute to the friends and family of Mark Lee Bennett that lost their lives over the years, through tragedy and bad circumstance. It’s a story of one man’s constant experience with death and tragedy. And it is also a glimpse at the underbelly of Victoria as seen from a man who emerged, scarred and changed forever, from the legacy of the Great Bookie Robbery.

Ken is the ward of Mad Town’s greedy Archbishop, a creature whose devilish appearance would send a chill down anyone’s spine. The master of Mad Town’s orphanage, the Archbishop ensures that Ken is beaten regularly, although anyone who encounters him is more than happy to lend a hand for this task. Sophie is married to a Middle Eastern Prince whose insane possessiveness and cruelty are among his best traits. How he came to wed Sophie, forty years his junior, no longer remains in her memory. The feeling of lust and the demand of ownership she casts on whomever she meets, is without doubt what caused her to be put into her current situation. Through a course of events, Ken and Sophie are brought together in the chaotic and hellish Mad Town, where they begin to uncover secrets they never knew about themselves.
Sophie and Ken must be dead – that’s the most rational explanation for their current situation – but when you’re directly faced with strange, enchanted beings; logic and reason fly out the window. The burden of heavy responsibilities, foreign customs and alien surroundings makes life for them – wherever they are – no less difficult from the ones they left. Sophie is once again placed into a role that she knows quite well, while poor Ken is forced into a position that requires him to master concepts and ideas capable of sending the sanest person mad. No wonder Torrential Reign, the second installment of The Fynian Fable, is wrought with hate, pain, betrayal and unearthly delights.
All actions have consequences but some outcomes are far more devastating than others. After recruiting Damien to help dissolve the Fynian crown, things did not exactly go as the Alliance had hoped. With both Sophie and Ken's thrones now vacant, an adversary – like none other – rises from within the Alliance and stands against them. This powerful nemesis effortlessly slaughters their most ferocious and deadliest warriors. Suddenly, disassembling the Alliance and restoring the Treaty is the least of everyone’s concerns. Each faery now has a decision to make. Stand and fight, or bow down to a new king. Damien's Off‐shoot is the third, most gruesome and ghoulish, installment of the Fynian Fable. Prepare yourself for a journey riddled with shocking deaths, astounding bravery and an unexpected ending.

Australia is an upbeat, quirky and sometimes humorous look at Australia and Australians ‐ the land, its people and its wildlife ‐ and what we value about our past that makes us proud now. Records, statistics, key dates, essential facts and achievements are presented in charts and lists, and supplemented by surprising information and intriguing stories about the people who shaped our nation ‐ the famous and the infamous. Fact spreads give thumbnail basics of topics such as prime ministers, buildings and classic Australian films. 'Then and now' spreads, which are largely pictorial. Throughout are poems and pertinent quotes. Photographic spreads highlight landscapes and wildlife. This engaging celebration of Australia is both an almanac and photographic record, the words and pictures coming together to create a vibrant picture of the country in which we live.

Tasmania has been described as the world's best-kept secret, but it's not our fault - we have been telling the world about Tasmania for almost 20 years. Tasmania 40°South has been described as a lifestyle magazine with brains. It offers three things: interesting features about Australia's island state, good writing and stunning photography. The magazine is a household name in Tasmania, but also has many subscribers elsewhere - people who have visited this beautiful place and now read the magazine for a regular reminder of an extraordinary experience. Tasmania 40°South offers feature stories, and stunning photography, about Tasmanian places and people, tourism, history and lifestyle, and regular columns on Tasmanian food, wine, arts and culture. Most of the Europeans who first settled in Tasmania came here in chains, and ever since, Tasmanians who could trace their ancestry to convicts rarely admitted it. For most of the more than 200 years of European settlement of the state, to have ancestors who were free settlers was something to be smug about. That attitude started to change in the 1980s, led by the restoration and development of Port Arthur, now one of the great tourist attractions of Australia. One of Tasmania’s most famous sons, Sir Henry Jones, has been eulogised by many people over many years. He was a man of enormous entrepreneurial flair and a major influence in national commercial life for more than 30 years. His birth certificate shows Sir Henry was born in Hobart on July 19, 1862, the second son of John and Emma Jones (nee Smith). Not a lot was known about his parents, but there was an assumption that they had arrived in Tasmania as free settlers. If anyone knew otherwise, they weren’t saying. The maiden name of Sir Henry Jones’ mother was not Smith, she and John Jones arrived in Tasmania separately, both as convicts, and it is possible these astonishing facts may have been lost permanently in the temporal mists were it not for the research over the past few years of Craig Sampson, the great grandson of Sir Henry Jones. It is with great pleasure, and honour, that Tasmania 40°South presents, in this issue, Sir Henry Jones in a completely new light, as seen through the eyes of a great grandson who is proud to recognise his convict ancestors.

Actors so often have a feeling that they could be doing more for their career, but don't know where to begin. Asking others for advice is helpful, but there is so much to learn and unless the advice is coming from a working actor, it may not be completely accurate. The Hollywood Survival Guide is not only tailored for Aussie actors coming to or in Hollywood, but for actors anywhere who want to become "smart actors" and understand how each facet of the entertainment industry works, and how it affects you as the actor. The book doesn't only tell you "how it is done," it also explains "why it is done" so that you can form your own opinions on how to best tackle each of the hurdles you encounter in your career within the industry.

Based in Queenstown, New Zealand Craig Smith is an APRA and ISC award winning musician and NZ post children's book award winning Author. His children's album has reached gold status and he has sold nearly 1,000,000 children's picture books of which the most famous is the international best seller "the wonky donkey". His books have been published by Scholastic publishing house but two of his book titles are self published , his latest venture being "Eating" has been "crowd funded" by his fans. He has produced award winning music videos as well as producing and writing all his own music. He has recently just returned from performing at the Glastonbury music festival in the UK. All his children's books are written in song with cd's in the back and this allows the children to engage in the story visually with the pictures and text, aurally with the music and kinesthetically should the music move them to dance. This way ALL styles of learning are engaged and learning to read can be achieved with fun and ease by one and all. A link to his website – www.craigsmith.co.nz

Daniel Corcoran takes you on a wild ride with his latest hilarious children’s book. In a quiet and peaceful town, things get a little out of control when a young boy starts a chain reaction of nuttiness after deciding to do something naughty! When the family sits down to pie and veggies, the little boy decides to take matters into his own hands and instead of eating his vegetables, he tosses them over the wall while cheekily lying about it to his Mum. He thinks he got away with it until the falling peas, potatoes and cauliflower accidentally trigger a sequence of events that get crazier as the story progresses. Thrills, spills and some giant zombie mutant pets ultimately bring this story to a dramatic end that starts at the dinner table and ends with a bang! Full of colourful illustrations and weird characters, Daniel’s latest book is bound to thrill the kids to bits and also teach them an important lesson about telling the truth. Author Information Daniel has been illustrating and sketching since he was a child, and cartooning is a passionate hobby. A designer by trade, Daniel thoroughly enjoyed the process of illustrating and writing his first book. When his audience began clamoring for more, he decided to create the sequel and he is now working on other exciting projects to be released soon! Daniel is also currently running exciting, interactive book reading and sketching shows during which he reads his books followed by live digital sketching. This is a great event to encourage young children’s creative spirit so if you are interested in an author visit, no matter what the event, then please get in touch. Daniel’s visit to our school inspired our students to return to their classrooms and homes to read and draw. His very entertaining presentation was enjoyed by not only the students, but by the staff also. I would not hesitate in recommending Daniel for a visit to your school. - Aaron Watson – Ashdale PS, WA Daniel, Thank you so much for all the effort, enthusiasm and learning you provided the children with. Having an author discuss their drawings, editing and publishing processes aligns well with the expectations for writing we have at school. The children are able to see themselves as authors too. We appreciate the time you have given us and again thank you. - Joanne Webster – St Peter Chanel Primary, Melbourne Many believe that Daniel was the best author we have ever had. We would highly recommend a visit from Daniel Corcoran. Mrs Lisa Decleva. Iddly Widdly Fiddly Poo
The second title in this hilarious series from author and illustrator Daniel Corcoran, follows the antics of some barnyard friends when they are faced with an uninvited guest who invades the barn in the dead of the night. After the success of 'The Iddly Widdly Fiddly Poo!', Daniel could not wait to embark on another project that touches on a topic that is universally amusing to both kids and adults of all ages. "The kids demanded I write this book," laughs Corcoran, "and we had a lot of fun doing it which is what this book is really all about."

Yes, it is about poo ‐ and then I added a rocket, a Splatterator and a cute little cat to bring it to life! With this book I am also proud to be able to support the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne through the Elise Foundation. I have donated 100% of my proceeds from a quantity of books that I hope will help to provide valuable funds for the hospital. I hope the book will also provide some laughs along the way!
How hairy should a fairy be? Is it scary to be hairy as a fairy? In this lairy tale of adventures, a young fairy soon discovers an inner strength she never knew she had. Behind an old shed lives a group of tiny fairies in a place called Fickle Town. The usual fairies exist but one fairy stands out from the rest; and she is not your typical fairy. Mary the Hairy Fairy was born with an unimaginable amount of hair that gets in the way of Mary's attempts to fit in on the streets of Fickle Town. What appears at first to be a hindrance, later proves to be her savior as an amusing series of catastrophes finally lead Mary to her destiny. Author and illustrator Daniel Corcoran's latest creation will generate a stack of laughs. The pages are bursting with colourful and detailed illustrations that will entertain kids over and over again. 'I wanted this story to touch on how much kids focus on body image ‐ especially with girls,' says Corcoran. 'I didn't want Mary to be a typical character fairy. So I sketched her to be quite unique and stand out from the crowd. She tries to be like everyone else but in the end she finds her own way in the world rather than conforming.'

Author Information Stories have always been integral to Margaret’s life. Her childhood was spent in England during and after the Second World War, when books were scarce. However, her father told stories to his children, which gave them much pleasure and began a love for storytelling in Margaret. Her working days were spent teaching in the early childhood sector in England and Melbourne, after she and her family happily emigrated here in 1982. Imaginative play, drama and story-telling were the core of her programs. Elephant Kitten is her first story and is based on a real-life experience when their kitten was spooked by his own reflection. It is built on Margaret’s father’s version of the episode. About the Illustrator As a work experience student, Sophie’s artistic talents were soon discovered by New Frontier Publishing. She has written and illustrated her own book, Lisa Absolutely Loves Art, and her illustrated work for Yellow Dress Day put her on the shortlist for the 2013 CBCA Crichton Award. Her other illustrated works include Matilda Saves Santa Claus, Emilia Mouse and the forthcoming Where Do Teachers Go at Night. Sophie enjoys playing across styles and mediums of illustration.

To make things worse, Rhys's friend, Oscar, runs into trouble and needs his help to rescue Mrs Watt's prize cat - urgently! ''What are these two long strings, Nan? What do they do? Please show me so I can wear these shoes just like you used to!" Michelle is staying with her Nanna and is frustrated when she cannot work out how to do up laces on a pair of old fashioned shoes she has found. Michelle asks her Nanna for help. With infinite patience and love, Nanna teaches Michelle how to tie shoelaces and in the process, Michelle develops fine motor skills, strength and hand‐eye co‐ ordination. Along the way she also develops new language concepts and vocabulary. Parents, teachers, grandparents and carers everywhere will love Old Fashioned Shoes because children need exposure to experiences that develop fine motor skills, hand‐eye co‐ordination and strength. These experiences prepare them for their future years and assist with writing and independence. They also need to learn to ask for help and to overcome frustration in order to develop a new skill ‐ and experience the resulting sense of achievement.
