Words from the Wise
October 2016 At the nail biting stage as we run into the good books for the second half. Art the books we have asked for print run numbers going to work to the degree we have requested? Don’t forget the marketing process started 6 months ago for the majority of the lead titles. Do we have enough free space in the warehouses to hold the 100 pallets of additional stock and so on? What I do know is that the backlist is selling beautifully and our best back list titles continue to do very well. Secret Girls Business had its biggest sales month EVER and August is cracking along as well. The famed Weed Foragers Handbook will be out of stock in 2 months time with a Reprint of 5000 copies booked for late October – this brings it to over 20,000 copies in print. Our biggest book will be the Midnight Oil book and it should really stand out in the shops to consumers. I was amazed when I researched how popular the band is; some of the stats; they have over 200,000 Facebook followers, their song “Beds are Burning” has had about 80,000,000 Youtube views. Big! So much so we are stickering every carton that leaves here until release date and also sending out “Countdown to Midnight” one pagers as well. We have also hitched a ride on some of the Oils fanbases announcing the book. Have a big go as it won’t be sold to DDS’s. And I repeat the publisher has bought some really great images for the book. Shrink wrapped books. I have changed my mind on this and will now alter our distribution agreements to make it clear that if you shrink wrap your book we will end up selling a lot less. So if you would like a display copy of Ducati please request. We have access to up to 40 copies to use this way – needs to be accompanied by an order however and your ordered stock is still firm sale. I see we as an industry have again succeeded in teaching consumers that you can expect to purchase lead titles for less then what most stores can purchase those book for. I am not against discounting, I just shake my head at bottom trolling selling prices. Does it really improve the image of the value of the book trade to consumers? I also notice Amazon are having their own branded air fleet.
I am in the second month of my personal travel freeze to try to spend more time (and save a dollar or more) in the office replying to people and chasing down money from book suppliers where we have paid them and then the returns exceed / erode the balance to the point where the publishers go into the red with us. Becomes quite complex as we don’t run a withholding scheme currently. The back end of business just becomes too hard; last week I told the agents for one of our warehouses I would not approve a Body Corporate payment adjustment for a 46% lift in Body Corp fees for the next twelve months. We have already prepaid until June 30th 2017 as it is. Our lease agreements are typically industrial where they are + outgoings. What a scam - as it effectively “could” allow for collusion between landlord and Body Corp, not suggesting that we have that case here though. You will see four “business” books listed this month for a reason; the product life cycle lives on via online and eBook. Creating Real Wealth – F16 sales 96% online, Life in Half a Second 46% online, Work Smarter Live Better 79% online and Soozy Johnstone's, I am the Problem only 6% online. Soozy’s book is the newest so it has not been consigned to the “return or delete” from inventory category. Another way to look at this is that these books are more intended for the business reader and they navigate their buying preferences online. The other bit of the jigsaw is that we sold as many of Cyril’s book as an eBook as we did of the print edition; well 70% Be interesting to run this sort of number soup across True Crime. Finally this is a long list and we do knock books and publishers back. If we had a list of the foreign publishers who contact us through the month we would have 250 titles as opposed to 125 “local” books. The list also has some backlist reminders which really helps in holding up the product lifecycle as we all do depend on the deep backlist even though it gets less and less shelf space. Enjoy the battle Thanks DJ

Food for me is the essence of life and life shared with family and friends is beautiful. Food in general brings people together ‐ it's part of the glue that binds society. Being Greek is about celebrating li fe with the ones we love. It's about spreading the table with delicious dishes bringing everyone together, feasting, laughing, drinking, listening to music, singing and dancing. Treasured moments to become lifelong treasured memories. What I have come to realise over the last few years, especially since setting up the "Sweet Greek Shop", is that cooking fulfils those basic needs we all have ‐ the need to create, contribute, share and love. For me, this encapsulates the essence of cooking something special for the ones we love. It's the using of our own hands to make something out of simple, honest ingredients, something prepared not for sustenance or financial gain, but purely for the purpose of bringing warmth and happiness, however small, to another person's life. Family, life, my friends, their good health and happiness, my culture and heritage are all the things that matter to me. It's respecting the legacy that our parents have left us and passing it onto future generations. The recipes that I have chosen to include in this book hold a lot of meaning for me. Some, are more traditional, others are more simple, and some are from my travels in Greece. All the dishes, apart from being delicious are simple, pragmatic and achievable in your own kitchen. Everyone relates to food based on their own experiences and its these experiences that create treasured memories and is what life is all about. Happiness is where the heart is, and the heartbeat of my home is the kitchen.

This biography studies the making of writer and artist's wife Cynthia Nolan, born Violet Cynthia Reed. She was almost forty when she married Sidney Nolan and consigned her past to obscurity. It tracks this brave, elusive figure through historical sources, letters, her novels, the recollections of friends and family, and the photographs and portraits made of her. After a privileged but constrained childhood, she travelled to Europe. Inspired by what she'd seen, she returned to Australia and, with a small circle of artists and designers, created a brief but influential business in contemporary art and design. In 1934 she moved to Sydney, hoping to find work as an actress. Disenchanted, Cynthia travelled to America, then London, to train as a nurse. Nurse Reed was in France when war was declared. She returned to Melbourne, pregnant, and stayed at Heide. She made a life for herself and her daughter, Mosca Jinx, in a cottage in Sydney, where she completed her much overlooked novels. Cynthia met Sidney through her sister‐in‐law, Sunday, who was married to John Reed. The women were close, but in 1941 Cynthia and Sunday had a falling out. Sidney came knocking on Cynthia's door in 1948. Once married, Sidney adopted Jinx, signalling his commitment to their family life. Cynthia had the requisite skills, experience and contacts to assist Sidney in his unprecedented success. From 1953, their home base was in Putney, London. Cynthia recorded their travels and preoccupations in four books, and also
Author Information M. E. McGuire, born and raised in Brisbane, first heard of Cynthia Nolan before her death. She was at this time, in that place, meeting some few but impressive artists’ wives. She left Brisbane in the wake of the great flood of 1974, and studied Art History and English at the University of Melbourne. Research eventually led her back to Cynthia Nolan and her books, which in time would lead her to Cynthia Reed. McGuire taught art history at Prahran Art School, Monash University and the Victorian College of the Arts. In 1995 she published her book All Things Opposite: Essays on Australian art. ‘McGuire’s voice is a rare one within the various discourses of Australian art. It is the quiet yet acutely critical murmur of a certain woman thinking, in finally unreserved ways, of the lives of women in Australian art.

A comprehensive and highly readable history of the first quarter‐century of Australian rock and pop music, this book will appeal to everyone with more than a passing interest in rock 'n' roll. Those whose knowledge of Australian rock and pop does not extend far beyond the Easybeats, AC/DC, Little River Band, and Nick Cave will discover a wealth of music beyond those star names; while even those familiar with the work of the Missing Links, Pip Proud, Radio Birdman, and the Moodists will learn much about the scenes and connections that produced these bands and dozens more. Generously illustrated and meticulously sourced, Dig combines scholarly thoroughness (endnotes, index) with populist flair: Nichols is an unfailingly witty and engaging guide. He surveys the fertile and varied landscape of Australian rock music in seven broad historical chapters, interspersed with shorter chapters on some of the more significant figures of each period. The result is a compelling portrait of a music scene that evolves in dynamic interaction with those in the United States and the U.K., yet always retains a strong sense of its own identity and continues to deliver new stars to a worldwide audience.

24 horses lined up for the running of the 155th Melbourne Cup. At 100‐1 Prince Of Penzance was the equal outsider, backed mainly by those hoping for a fairy‐tale. A popular female jockey aboard when no woman had ever won the race before. A country bloke who had risen through the ranks from humble beginnings as a farrier in Stawell to become one of Australia's most successful and prolific trainers. 24 enthusiastic owners who had been following their horse all around Victoria from Stawell to Donald to Flemington. A New Zealand bred horse with a bargain price tag... Up against expensively bred stayers from Japan and Europe, horses owned by Sheikhs and millionaires. 100‐1 shots are usually greeted back to scale with muted applause but there was a mighty roar for Prince Of Penzance... An extraordinary Melbourne Cup winner. A book about the background to the memorable 2015 Melbourne Cup... from the perspective of those behind the triumph and how they experienced the race that stopped two nations!

These pages chronicle his journey, telling his dangerous truth with fearless candour, infectious enthusiasm and a wicked sense of humour. "Very readable, but not for the PC at heart. " Andy Harper "I read it in five hours flat and could not put it down. " Roy Hay "Compelling and mesmerising. " Con Stamocostas "An amazing journey. " Ashley Morrison

Nick Lawrance, an antique map dealer, is shocked to find his gallery has been burgled. However, this isn't an ordinary robbery: the thieves have ignored priceless maps and have only taken Bunting's World Map. All of a sudden, Nick is thrown into a four‐hundred‐year religious mystery where strange people around him will do anything for this map... even kill for it. Nick has to figure out why, before it's too late. Thrilling and steeped in dark history, The Bunting Quest is inspired by a real‐life map that displays the Australian coastline many years before its 'discovery'. Here, two compelling adventures, set hundreds of years apart, come together in this breathtaking page‐turner that reveals mankind's greatest secret.

That same year he met Miriam and together they have three children, two now living in Melbourne and one at home. ‘Who Gets the Dog?’ answers your questions about what really happens during separation and divorce. This book is not just a theoretical framework. It is woven with the reality that life is messy. Even the life we want. You have seen some couples, once caring and loving, go on to create and star in their own Divorce Horror Show, taking every opportunity to act out yet another dirty tactic, losing their soul and their wallet to a legal battle that feels like it will never end. And yet you have also seen other couples somehow work through things amicably before most people even realised they were separating. This book will reassure you that you too can create an environment conducive to a quiet, simple and relatively inexpensive separation process, even though you may feel everything is at risk right now. ‘Who gets the Dog’ asks the real questions, and provides practical hints and hot tips so you avoid losing yourself to a legal war. Because of this book you will: - learn how to cope when everything is falling apart - find paths through conflict that are respectful, authentic and human - become courageous enough to try new and better ways. This book gives you reassurance and hope.

Behind the Text is a celebration of the often forgotten genre of creative nonfiction. Paired with Joseph’s rich descriptions of person and place, this collection of candid interviews brings together some of the best Australian authors, covering everything from traumatic wartime journalism and burning national issues to Middle Eastern spices. In this definitive work, eleven influential authors explore their writing process, ethical dilemmas and connection to the capacious genre. As the first collection of its kind, this work brings Australian creative nonfiction into the literary spotlight. Authors interviewed include Paul McGeough, Doris Pilkington Garimara, Kate Holden, Greg Bearup and Anna Goldsworthy.
Author Information Sue Joseph has been a journalist for more than 35 years, working both in Australia and the UK. She began working as an academic, teaching print journalism at the University of Technology, Sydney, in 1997. She has published three other books: She's My Wife; He's Just Sex, The Literary Journalist and Degrees of Detachment: An Ethical Investigation, and Speaking Secrets, which focuses on literary journalism and ethics. Before working as an academic, Joseph lived and worked in the UK as a correspondent for several Fleet Street newspapers, national radio and television stations. She also worked on many regional publications in London, and worked closely with John Pilger to help launch the weekly national Sunday tabloid, News on Sunday. Joseph now teaches across both the undergraduate and postgraduate programs at University of Technology Sydney, in print journalism and writing subjects.

A collection of stories by Australia's most significant Yiddish writer translated into English, some never before published. Goldhar was the literary voice of his generation, as well as a leading cultural and social commentator. This new collection will ensure that this wonderful writer is not forgotten. He was the first to publish a Yiddish literary book, the first editor of a Yiddish paper, the first Yiddish writer to be included in Australian anthologies, the first to translate Australian writers into Yiddish and certainly was one of the founders of a literature written by "New Australians" before the term New Australian even existed. ‐ H. Brezniak 1957
Author Information Pinchas Goldhar (1901–47) arrived in Australia in 1926, escaping growing anti‐Semitism in Poland. Here he laid the foundations of the now substantial literature on Jews in this country. He wrote short stories about Polish Jewish immigrants and, despite the fact that he wrote in Yiddish, his work made a deep impression on Australian writers and critics through English translations. He wrote of the tensions, trials and mental agony of lonely migrants uprooted from their former homes trying to adjust themselves to life in a new world.

Miller spent six years working in Shanghai for an English‐language publication and saw from the inside the workings of the Chinese regime, its censorship and propaganda. This is an Australian’s account of this period of time, observing not only the way censorship works but also exploring how China, the world’s most populous and one of the oldest civilisations, relates to foreigners and the outside world. As China is a significant trading partner and affects the security of Australia, a book which gives a Westerner’s inside look into how its society works should have broad appeal. It is written not just for China experts but the general public in Australia and overseas. The author is the founder of http://www.whyiwrite.net/ and has many media contacts.
Author Information JFK Miller is a journalist who lives in Brisbane. He worked as lawyer in London before becoming a full‐time writer, with articles published in many journals and magazines.

Charlotte and Daniel had talked about him in such glowing terms but he sounded like an insufferable chauvinist. She wondered how she’ d manage to sit through dinner with him tomorrow night let alone spend a whole week in his company... Outwardly Dr Nick Delaney has it all – the most successful veterinary practice in the district, a host of loyal clients and friends, and muscular good looks cementing his position as Bowral’s most eligible bachelor. According to the local rumour mill Nick’s sad past is the reason his ‘bachelor’ tag is probably here to stay ‐ that is until the beautiful, cultured and feisty Jordana Talbot comes to town, fleeing a past of her own. The second in Diana Thompson’s Bowral series, Unbridled Passion sheds more light on the strong undercurrent of romance and drama in the deceptively placid Southern Highlands of New South Wales. “Do you think he’ ll be alright?” she said looking at the injured stallion... He felt comforted that she’ d chosen to sit out here with him in the cold stables... When he was younger he thought he’ d known what it was to feel passion. But what he was experiencing now, sitting close to her on a hay bale, there was simply no comparison.
Author Information
Diana Thompson has long harboured the desire to become a writer, ever since she was a teenager sitting on the beach, sharing her dreams with her friends. A lifelong passion for reading and writing has resulted in Diana’s first novel Winterflood’s Passion coming to fruition in 2015. Diana is a true romantic, believing there is one incredible love out there for each and every one of us. Her writing reflects this with dominant themes of strong, sexy women; hunky yet tender and loving alpha males, and shared love and passion overcoming all obstacles. When she is not writing or reading romance novels, Diana leads a chaotic life dividing her time between a farm she shares with her husband in Braidwood NSW, known as “Baskerville Park” and named after her beloved Hungarian Viszla hounds, and her high–end jewellery store “Briolette” in Canberra, renowned for its award winning designs. Writing now consumes her every waking thought and Australian country life has a special place in her stories. Diana’s other pursuits include painting, gardening and cooking, especially entertaining family and friends at Baskerville Park. Winterflood's Passion Author

"Charlotte stood mesmerised. The piece was beautiful, not only sexual but conveying the deep love the man felt for this woman and the growing child in her belly. A tear slid silently down her cheek as she stared at the sculpture. She felt starkly alone for a moment, and then tensed as she felt Daniel move behind her." When Charlotte Ranleigh first laid eyes on Daniel Winterflood she was unprepared for the instantaneous jolt of lust that ran through her. Only a year had passed since the sudden death of her husband. Since that terrible day, the beautiful and talented young widow had been in self‐imposed exile at her marital estate in the Southern Highlands, trying to make sense of her loss and blaming herself for the part she'd played in it. There were many things Charlotte believed were beyond her now ‐ a happy marriage, children, and her dream of starting an art school at Ranleigh Park. Certainly, she'd never thought she'd desire anyone again, especially not the playboy art‐dealer she'd only just met... "Her hand was tiny but her grip was firm and he held it for as long as it took to deliver the best knockout million dollar smile he could muster. God, how was he going to keep his promise after her overwhelming onslaught of all his senses?"

Invisible to us, the Watchers witness and record the lives of the humans below. Lyssa belongs to a generally peaceful population of otherworldly and gifted beings who occupy a world above our own. Lyssa is a Watcher, assigned to document all incarnations of Jasper's existence, and at the end of each life, she visits and assists her charge through their reincarnation. With each rebirth, Jasper forgets Lyssa. Desperate to save the man she loves, Lyssa pierces the protective Veil between the worlds but an ancient evil of the world above unfurls a vengeful plan of destruction. Jasper and Lyssa struggle to untangle the web of his previous incarnations and realise the extent of their love, which has a very real manifested power in forcing the darkness back.

Chloe, the mixed‐race illegitimate daughter of a cattle baron inherits vast landholdings in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions of Western Australia. The wealth has been accumulated by her father’s criminal actions brought on by the desperation to survive which saw him dragged into a conspiracy from which there was no escape. Chloe had been brought up on Venus Downs, unacknowledged by Henry Boyce, her natural father. On the death of her father and his adopted twin sons she is suddenly party to the ongoing crime. A young lawyer, Andrew Hanna, discovers the crime and the main perpetrators, but is his client a willing participant? He falls in love with her, but she is already married to a psychopathic husband, whom she fled from in London when she abandoned her international modelling career. The central conspirator to the crime moves to gain control of her entire estate, through financial manipulation, blackmail, murder and fear. Hanna gradually unravels the identity of the criminals involved at his own peril when he establishes Chloe is not involved, but can he recover her inheritance from a hopeless financial position? As with the first novel in the trilogy, author Donovan Hoult's sequel “Cliffs of Ochre” follows “The Eye of the of the Rainbow Serpent,” as a reflection of the human condition of exploitation and greed. What astonishes about Kinsella is that this vast, dilating rhizome, this meme of global poeticising, coexists with an intense dedication to craftsmanship on the level of the individual poem. One does not know whether to admire Kinsella more as the author of poems in the traditional sense, or, to redeploy a concept of Kinsella’s compatriot Les Murray, a ‘poeme.’ In the 1990s, it was popular to speak of Kinsella’s poetry as inhabiting two modes, the ‘dark pastoral’ or ‘ruined pastoral’ of volumes like The Hunt and The Silo and the more experimental, language poetry-influenced mode of Syzygy. This influential scheme seems less adequate to describe Kinsella’s poetry in the 2000s. Kinsella himself says the Graphology series, ‘encapsulates many of the concerns of The Hunt and The Silo, in the same way that Syzygy does. It is landscape poetry as well as wordscape or linguistic poetry.’ The Graphology series represents, not the synthesis between Kinsella’s alleged two modes, but the rupture of any sort of solid membrane separating them. - Nicholas Birns

As a racing driver, Greg Murphy saw the highs and the lows of the sport, and through it all he wore his heart on his sleeve. At his peak, he was one of the most loved sportsmen in New Zealand and he divided opinion in Australia. He was known simply as Murph. Love him or hate him, his talent behind the wheel was never questioned. Four wins at Bathurst plus the greatest lap ever driven at the iconic centerpiece of the Australian motorsport world stand him near the peak of the pile. That qualifying lap stood unmatched for more than a decade. He was runner‐up in the V8 Supercar Championship twice and climbed to the top step of the podium 37 times in a V8 Supercar with wins in both Championship and non‐Championship events. He also won the Bathurst 24‐hour race with childhood hero Peter Brock and scored back‐to‐back Championship wins in New Zealand's V8SuperTourers. In the troughs, he stood on the wrong side of the officialdom, scoring the infamous five‐minute penalty at Bathurst as well as an erroneously applied drive through penalty at Winton that cost him a chance at winning the 2004 Championship. He also had to endure some tough times as a driver as teams buckled around him and fate dealt a cruel hand.

As a toddler, Jeremy Scott had a huge hole in his aorta valve that cruelly denied him the opportunity to live the life of a normal healthy child. At just four years of age Jeremy underwent Open Heart Surgery at the hands of renowned surgeon Sir Brian Barratt‐Boyes. Thirty four years later with practically no experience or training, Jeremy took the unbelievably courageous plunge and began a 2 year, 51,916km bicycle ride that would see him cycle through 29 countries from London to New Zealand. While separate encounters with the Iranian and Filipino Mafia had Jeremy fearing for his life, it was the beautiful acts of kindness offered by strangers throughout the world that will forever warm his heart. While this beautiful story of self‐discovery will leave you feeling genuinely inspired, Jeremy's stunning photographs from the road will render you speechless. The Long Road From A Broken Heart is not only a story about life in the saddle, it is a story about the beautiful side of humanity and an example of what someone can achieve if they believe in themselves and have the courage to chase their dreams.

Yes, wrinkles, and memory lapses will occur. But guess what? Great things happen to our bodies after age 60, too: allergies decrease, weight often decreases naturally, teeth become less sensitive, catching colds occurs less frequently and relationships can be fabulous. And forget less energy ‐ age doesn't cause weakness, only lack of activity does! The same holds true for the brain: age alone has no effect on thinking. This unique health guide reveals what to expect as the years pass, and, more importantly, provides specific, empowering advice on how to stop physical and mental decline in their tracks. Here's a healthy‐living guide like no other. * Features strategies to improve memory and brain power and stay mentally active. * Includes ways to safeguard heart health and tackle high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, weight gain and stress. * Illustrates simple, effective movements that build muscle and keep joints supple. * A resource section is packed with information about leisure activities, travel, healthcare, finances, legal help and more.

Are you hungry to grow in a new direction that you would love to go? You are not alone. The Hunger to Grow dismisses the idea that we grow only through our work and our working years. It’s time to retire the word “retired”. Now it’s, “What’s for dessert? I’m still hungry!” Our dessert years begin when we start thinking about what we want in the second half of our lives. What we used to call a midlife crisis is just the realisation that we want to turn the rest of our lives into the ‘yummy years’, to allow our true passions to flow in search of new possibilities, new directions and new challenges. Now in his seventies Peter Nicholls, Australia's People Gardener, is living proof of this book's powerful message. The Hunger to Grow will guide you through the transition from doing what you have to do to doing what you love to do. It will put you in the driver’s seat of your future, empowering you to travel along the road of life your heart wants you to take. The Hunger to Grow is the book of your future.

The Great Spirit – the common spirit of all humankind – is in danger. It is bleeding. And the consequences can already be felt: a strange, ominous, body‐cooling phenomenon is spreading throughout the world, causing a significant decrease in people’s body temperatures. Omer, a sensitive and intelligent boy, begins to suffer from this phenomenon. Setting out to investigate, he gets caught in a worldwide, multi‐ dimensional adventure of a lifetime. Obscure characters accompany him to the depths of common memory and thought, teaching him to look from high above into the infinite river of life, for only there, alone and from a distance, will he be able to understand a terrible secret. In a world haunted by greed and the damage inflicted on its delicate equilibrium, Snowflake River is a highly imaginative and poetic story detailing the struggle between good and evil, old and new, free will and domination, whilst revealing the power of simplicity, innocence, and love.

The Bogle-Chandler mystery is recognised as one of the most baffling cold cases in the annals of crime. The victims, brilliant physicist Dr Gilbert Bogle and Mrs Margaret Chandler, the wife of his colleague, were found dead beside a picturesque river in Sydney, Australia. Investigators found no evidence to suggest how they had died. The bizarre manner in which the bodies were covered only added to the mystery. The police immediately suspected Geoffrey Chandler as the killer. But despite drawing on the expertise of police and forensic agencies around the world, the coroner was unable to determine how the victims met their fate. In his award-winning film and book on the case, the author presented new evidence, which provided a solution to the mystery. This revised edition, brimming with photos and original documents, features the explosive testimony of a previously unknown witness to the deaths - a testimony that has thrust the case back onto the coroner's desk.

The case of the "Missing Beaumont Children" has been forged into Australia's psyche and soul like no other crime. A crime so shocking that it has often been described as a defining moment in this country's history. After 50 years of intense police investigation the whereabouts of Jane (9), Anna (7) and Grant Beaumont (4) is still a mystery; Australia's most famous unsolved crime. On the morning of January 26, 1966 the three children set off from their Somerton Park home to Glenelg Beach on a bus to enjoy a brief excursion at Adelaide's most popular beach only a few kilometres away. Apart from a brief sighting from the Beaumont family's postman early on that afternoon, there have been no other sightings of the children since. The 'mystery' of the children's disappearance has often overshadowed the 'misery' the Beaumont parents have had to endure. This book takes the reader inside the trauma of Nancy and Grant; from the panic and heartbreaking first few days to the utter despair in later years. Only seven years after the Beaumont disappearance, two girls Joanne Ratcliffe (11) and Kirste Gordon (4) were abducted from Adelaide Oval during a football match. Were the two abductions connected? How could they not be connected?

Guns, drug money and the CIA... These were not your average bankers. This was not your average bank. In 1980, following the mysterious death of Australian merchant banker, Frank Nugan, his New York-born partner, Michael Hand, brazenly ordered the destruction of the bank's records. Hand then disappeared from Sydney and hasn't been seen since. Among the ruins of the Nugan Hand global financial empire, investigators uncovered astonishing evidence of gunrunning, money laundering for drug traffickers and connections to the CIA. When the FBI and a Royal Commission failed to join the dots, those intimately involved with the case suspected a cover up. Brimming with chilling new evidence and powerful testimonies, Merchants of Menace cracks open the sensational Nugan Hand story and goes on the hunt for the world's most elusive corporate fugitive...

It is one of Australia's worst unsolved crimes. On a Friday afternoon as the wind down to the weekend begins, two women are held hostage in a hairdressing salon. They scream and fight for their lives, but they face a killer's frenzied rage. Two unlikely victims and an unlikely crime scene at an unlikely time of day. No motive, no weapon found, no known offender; but, someone, somewhere, knows the truth. It is a long time to keep such a shocking secret - it has now been more than 20 years. Former journalist, Leonie Wallace, traces the lives of those closely connected to this crime including members of the victims' families, witnesses and suspects to present some important and surprising revelations. Also explored are the circumstances that impacted on the inability of police to solve this case. This is a disturbing account, however, it is not just a book about murder. Many more layers exist. It is also a story of great courage and love as those at its epicentre continue their quest for justice and closure.
'It began to gnaw at him, at first an inkling, then an obsession: Farah Jama was truly innocent. Sonnet (Associate Crown Prosecutor) decided then that he didn't want to grant Jama a re-trial. He wanted to deliver him an acquittal.' In the style of literary non-fiction comes a compelling, true story that will appeal to mystery, crime and "CSI" aficionados and anyone interested in justice for all in the midst of cultural diversity. 0n 21st July 2008, 21-year-old Somali, Farah Jama was sentenced to six years behind bars for the rape of a middle-aged woman as she lay unconscious in a Melbourne nightclub. Throughout the trial Jama had maintained his innocence against the accusations he committed such a predatory, heinous crime.

The story of a young convict, Solomon Blay, who became Her Majesty's hangman in Van Diemen's Land; the man who personally had to deliver an Empire's judgement on 200 men and women, and endured his own noose of personal demons and demonisation in order to "survive"; all in the context of the great struggles of good-evil, life-death, hope-despair, which drew the attention of Darwin, Twain, Trollope and Dickens as Van Diemen's Land evolved from a Hades of Evil to sow the seeds of nationhood. The book paints a vivid picture of the society and poverty from which Blay's character was forged in England and the desperate, brutal nature of being a convict in Van Diemen's Land. Solomon's Noose is an important book in exposing the dark 'underbelly' in the formation of modern Australia.

Back in the 1990s Melbourne writer Vikki Petraitis set the benchmark for Australian true crime with her bestselling books The Phillip Island Murder and The Frankston Murders. The latter came about because Vikki was doing interviews with members of Victoria Police for her second book of true crime stories. In July 1993 she happened to be doing ride-alongs with the Frankston police when Paul Charles Denyer began his serial killing spree around the bayside suburbs they policed. Two years later her groundbreaking book was released.
From the furthest corner of that foreign country, the past, comes the haunting story of the convict who became the British Empire's youngest executioner. Beware the shock of the true. - Andrew Rule, award-winning journalist and author.

Creating Real Wealth opens with a thorough and intelligent discussion on the various aspects of wealth creation. Author Michael Kemp encourages readers to first define their perception of wealth before they set out on their journey to achieve financial security. The vague goal of 'becoming wealthy' is unachievable if the more you earn the more you spend. He warns against measuring financial goals and achievements against those of the Joneses or the stars of the screen and entertainment worlds. Instead he reviews the wisdom of those intelligent investors who have created real and lasting wealth. Kemp's reasoning is easy to follow. He believes there are only really four things the wealth-creator needs to know about money: how to earn it, save it, invest it and enjoy it. In this fascinating book you will learn: * How to set financial objectives that will lead to financial security * The importance of saving and the value of compounding returns
Soozey Johnstone - one of Australia's most experienced and respected business and team advisors - has finally written her first book, I Am The Problem. The book brilliantly reveals the roadblocks that hold teams back - roadblocks of character, team dynamics, or missing skills - and the roadblocks in ourselves. I Am The Problem is the simplest, most insightful and easiest-to-implement book on dysfunctional executive teams - how to make success happen more often and more easily, and rediscovering your organisaĆ&#x;onal "mojo". The book is designed to be a very practical "hands on" primer for anyone facing apparently intractable organisational obstacles, whether or not the organisation is recognising or facing up to those obstacles - yet. As a Director or Manager, you can choose to act on any of the 9 obstacles, or just one, or a few, or all of them. Acting on all of them would be a genuinely transformative move. Acting on any of the advice in the book will make you happier, and your organisation much more functional and successful.

This journey will challenge your way of thinking about work. You will learn how to work smarter and more importantly, live better.

Australian War Diaries of a Japanese P.O.W. is a remarkable story of survival and the endurance of Australian spirit in the face of adversity. Fred Lasslett went down with the HMAS Perth off Indonesia, and was captured by the Japanese. He spent the remainder of the war in POW camps in Indonesia and Japan, but through it all maintained a diary in the form of letters home to his "elusive girl", written on cigarette paper and preserved to this day. Fred's diaries include amazing stories of escape and recapture, with the author ultimately facing a Japanese firing squad and telling how he survived. These letters reveal a spirit unshaken in the face of long imprisonment, failed escape attempts and dreary conditions in the Japanese work camp. Grim, unquenchable, uplifting; Australian War Diaries of a Japanese P.O.W. is sure to inspire.

Who was Isabella Mary Kelly? Media sensationalism and colourful folklore labelled her a “wanton with a whip” and a “bitter sadistic hell-cat of a woman”. Legends of her infamous adventures with convicts and bushrangers were told. With care and attention to detail, Maurie Garland strips back the layers of rumour and misinformation, to reveal the truth about Isabella Mary Kelly, a woman alone in the unforgiving Australian outback of the mid-nineteeth century. Hers is a story of a woman ahead of her time, and persecuted for her differences. A story of justice and society in the fledgeling Australian colony. A story of challenge, prejudice, determination and pernicious crime; dramatic, unimaginable, scandalous — and entirely true.

Bitter enemies in a small town. Political rivals caught in a web of lies. This is the true story and gripping account of Horace Dean’s rise in politics in South Australia in the 1850s. George Fife Angas arrived in South Australia in 1851, feted as the Father and Founder of South Australia, and the prime mover of German immigration to the Colony. The American-born Horace Dean had arrived in the Colony of South Australia in 1849, and began a medical practice in Angaston. He also became a Stipendiary Magistrate of high repute, and the first Mayor of Angaston. Individually, George and Horace were extremely talented but with their own personal insecurities. Both had egos to match their talent; both were abnormally sensitive about the reputation they perceived they enjoyed; both needed to dominate those around them. And each possessed a remarkable tenacity of purpose.

What are the qualities that make a good leader? 4 Leaders examines the activities of four polar explorers: Nansen, Scott, Shackleton and Amundsen; four men who are feted as heroes of Polar exploration, and inspired a generation of explorers. In particular, we learn about the judgements made as leaders of expeditions. All four men undertook perilous adventures and were challenged by the unknown in the most hostile and lonely environments on earth. Theirs was not a world with GPS or sophisticated digital equipment. They went into the unknown with the risk that they would never be seen or heard from again. They had no lifeline with civilisation and the decisions they made resulted in life or death. True leadership demands an extraordinary ability to foresee the consequences of one's decisions and Four Leaders examines how different people in different situations managed their role as leader. A fascinating look into the world of Polar exploration and the men who dared to venture where no one else had.

Award winning author Reg Egan's third book, Of Rivers, Baguettes and Billabongs, is an insightful look at the history and lives affected by two rivers in two different continents: the Darling in Australia and the Dordogne in France.Egan cleverly draws parallels between the two seemingly unrelated landscapes, exploring the people and their culture. He retraces the travels of our most loved literary figures, including Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson, questioning: How much is our culture affected by our landscape? Egan's love of all things French is only equal to his love of his homeland and, in Of Rivers, Baguettes and Billabongs, Egan proves it is possible for a man to love and be true to two countries in different hemispheres. Of Rivers, Baguettes and Billabongs will appeal to anyone interested in food, history, literature, poetry, and travel. Don't be surprised if this becomes a baby boomer travel guide as inspired readers take to retracing Egan's fascinating exploration of what shapes us.

Part true-crime stories from the street, part autobiography, Wayne McKay has lived the hard yards and come out the other side triumphant. From beginnings in a broken home to life on the street and in jail, he has survived without friends and family to count on and very little hope. McKay prides himself on not being a name-dropper or rat, but shares his story as a way of dealing with his past and seeking closure and to show others that he is not who they thought he was.

Isolated in a small cell at Brisbane’s maximum-security prison awaiting trial, Joe Tog composed a series of short narratives for his defence-barrister. The purpose was to overcome confusion with the chronology of events leading up to his arrest in far North Queensland. The barrister however commented to his client during the trial, that the notes gave him a clarity that he did not normally get from cold, hard facts and dates. Out of that comment grew this story.Prison Break follows Tog’s escape from two Australian prisons as well as his life and travels on the run. Interrogation, incarceration, violence and mate-ship are chronicled in depth to give you an insight into the criminal mind. A true story, with some fiction to protect the guilty, it is sad at times, funny in others but all in all a lesson in life.

Laid out in this book is the world's most famous master plan for seizing and holding power. Astonishing in its candor, The Prince even today remains a disturbingly realistic and prophetic work on what it takes to be a prince, a king or a president. When, in 1512, Machiavelli was removed from his post in his beloved Florence, he resolved to set down a treatise on leadership that was practical, not idealistic. In The Prince he envisioned would be unencumbered by ordinary ethical and moral values; his prince would be man and beast, fox and lion. Today, this small sixteenth-century masterpiece has become essential reading for every student of government, and is the ultimate book on power politics.

The 6-hour MBA is for everyone in the workforce. It demystifies management and challenges current assumptions. In order for organisations to achieve their potential, they must put in place systems that enable their employees to reach their potential. The current assumption by many organisations is that employees are paid to do what they are told; this prevents the organisation from availing itself to the full potential of the worker. The 6-hour MBA challenges this and introduces the concept of leadership. In easy to understand language, it explains the fundamental and critical concepts of management so that they can be understood by all.

8 States of Catastrophe takes us on a journey through the Australian continent, exposing snapshots of lives both separate and delicately connected. Mysterious coincidences and a series of catastrophes accompany an ex-journalist and his faithful dog as they twist their way around the continent in this unashamedly Australian novel. From the political fringes of Canberra to the northern beaches of New South Wales, and into the outback of Queensland (where a mysterious oasis exists on the edge of reality), the story trains an unwavering lens on lives catastrophically altered. In places as diverse as a West Australian wheat belt town and suburban St Kilda, our trip guides - MV (a motorcycle-riding psychic poet) and Rider (his old black Labrador) - introduce us to an eclectic cast: Daniella of the nine lines; Ninette, the Keeper of Secrets; Anjellica, a talk-show host lured back to Melbourne from Chicago, and her charismatic chairman-of-the-MelbourneFootball-Club boyfriend; and Carmel, whose childhood was a breeding ground for murderous revenge. Lives intersect, and loss and love collide in this intricate web of humanity.

Silent Body - Vibrant Mind is a love letter about life, love and family. In 2001 Peter Anderson was 36 and had the perfect life: very much in love and recently married with an infant daughter he adored; an intelligent and sensitive man working a job he loved as a popular secondary school teacher and a talented sportsman training for a marathon...The bubble was about to burst.Peter was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a physically crippling disease that destroys nerve cells controlling muscular movement. He was told that over time his body would cease to function - yet his mind, his memory and his feelings would be untouched by the disease. His life expectancy was two years. Incredibly, eleven years on, despite Peter's body wasting away, his mind remains as it has always been: strong and vibrant, intelligent, enquiring, touched with gentle humour.Silent Body - Vibrant Mind has been written with often unimaginable physical difficulty. An unforgettable story about what matters in life.

Beanard Underduds Thistlebog Trousers (B.U.T.T. for short) is a boy of ten with a notoriously infamously gifted and highly explosive family who are currently training for the Meadow Peeps Annual Pop Off. Beanard has always strived to be different, un-tooting and with silent trousers. In his various endeavours and gooey misadventures, to keep his butt-clenching ways, he unwittingly becomes a jailer. Five magical waste gas collecting burples find themselves with all exits closed. Will anyone survive this journey, set amongst serious butt-blasting training and pongy aerial displays of bottom-burping prowess and a butt that will not blow? This is an exciting fast-paced, action-packed tale of woe. It is full of stinky gas, misadventures, mudpuppy monsters, suspense and many nasally-propellant liftoffs. The unsuspecting characters make unwise decisions that result in unfortunate butt-clenching, potently pungent rollercoaster rides, trips to the moon.

Nowadays, in conventional gardening and farming, weed 'control' means herbicides: chemicals have replaced good management for fertility and for pest, disease and weed control. We hate weeds. 'Weed' is the ultimate insult. But weeds can also be seen as soil repairers, an essential part of any farm or garden management. In this completely revised edition, Jackie French shows that weeds can be controlled using your own home-grown, natural herbicides in addition to mulching, solarisation or applications of urine, steam or boiling water - and a multitude of others cheap, environmentally safe and gentle techniques.

AVAILABLE NOW How can something so wrong be so right!?
Author Information
From the diabolically dangerous duo of author Michael Wagner and artist Wayne Bryant comes a naughty and subversive collection of twisted tales, odd ads, questionable life lessons and other forms of laugh-outloud wrongness. But beware… This book is rude, it has attitude, it’ll make your brain skewed, and someone should get sued, because sometimes IT’S TOTALLY NUDE! Targeting 10-13 year old reluctant readers (while remaining inclusive of all reader), So Wrong is a hyperactive grab-bag of wit, warmth and cheekiness. As two former reluctant readers themselves, Michael and Wayne have created the book (and series) they wish had existed when they were kids. It's Mad magazine meets Andy Griffiths' and Terry Denton, with the irreverence of Pippi Longstocking and the subversiveness of Roald Dahl - so right for young readers, especially those who haven't fallen in love with books. Yet. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

He’s part boy, part pig, with a huge heart and a head full of hope. They’re the kind of acts that have kids turning the pages of the book so quickly, searching for MORE. Amelia is a Melbourne‐based children’s author, and is very excited about her debut picture book Who is Fitzy Fox?. After school, she went on to study creative arts at the University of Melbourne, where she majored in printmaking and creative writing. She subsequently completed a Post Graduate in Education and worked as a primary school teacher for seven years. It was during this time that Amelia’s love of picture books was rekindled. Realising the power of picture books in promoting literacy and facilitating class discussions, Amelia started to write stories for her students. A little homesick in Scotland five years ago, Amelia wrote the first draft for Who is Fitzy Fox? on a scrap piece of paper. She has immensely enjoyed the creative process of bringing her story to life with her illustrator Jennifer Bruce. Besides

Muesli on my brother’s head, mashed sweet potato on the bed! A series of mischievous messes and accidental calamities from the author of Where Do Teachers Go at Night?
Author Information Harriet Cuming is an early childhood teacher with 37 and a half years of experience – the half is very important. She has taught in Australia, Papua New Guinea and the United Kingdom, and currently lives on the northern beaches in Sydney, Australia. Where Do Teachers Go at Night? Was her first children’s book, followed by this equally wicked rhyme in Muesli on My Brother's Head.
About the Illustrator
Formally trained as an interior architect, Kathryn Green found her passion in illustration. After creating stationery for friends and family, she soon found her invitations fulfilling a much-needed hole in the wedding and events market. Her work has been featured in wedding magazines and blogs, both locally and internationally, and even used as front cover art for a popular wedding magazine. From whimsical florals to dreamy designs, her creations in watercolour and ink are recognisable and instantly alluring. Muesli on My Brother’s Head is her first work as illustrator of a picture book. For more information on Kathryn Green’s latest collections and custom projects, see www.kathryngreen.com.au.

Little Sower Samuel loves to garden. When he looks around and sees that his city does not have enough of the greenness he loves, Samuel embarks on a mission of sharing, by giving seedlings and joy to all around.
Author Information Sydney-born Robert Costa was always the child who would never really grow up, a school-time daydreamer with a fascination for life and nature who loved to play in the market gardens of his Italian grandparents and on his great uncle’s Aussie sheep farm. As a teenager, his obsession turned to the sea, and on weekends, he would spend hours in the cold night air of the Pacific Highway, in the back of utes and vans with anyone who would take him out of the city to surf the north coast of NSW. He later studied and became an electrician, placing himself in Sydney’s grey world of industrial construction. After marrying the lovely Dianne and moving to his beloved north coast at twenty, Robert became a father himself a year later. Fascinated with great kids' books and stories by people such as Banjo Patterson, he saw his own children loving the flow and beat of a good rhyme, remembering every detail in the lengthy stories. As a dad and former Sunday school teacher of many years, Robert is inspired by children and their simple love of life. Now in his late fifties, Rob pens books himself; books that have a message of love, caring and vision. His timeless and simple stories are intended to help young children hold onto, as long as possible, their most valuable attribute: the child within.

You’ve probably heard of Africa’s ‘Big Five’: the lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant. But did you know there are five little animals who share their names, and can fit in the palm of your hand? See what happens when the ‘Small Five’ go up against their big cousins – in a battle of wit, wills, and some extraordinary skills! A little rhyme with a big heart.
Author Information In over 20 years working as an editor and corporate writer, Ralph Johnstone has always had a secret hankering to write a children’s book. Now, with the help of Africa’s most fun and fearless characters, he has done just that! Ralph first encountered the Small Five while helping a Kenyan safari company develop activities for its children’s club – and fell in love with them on the spot. He says that visitors to Africa always thrill to see the fearsome lions and majestic elephants, but the little guys always get a raw deal. “After all, they’re just as robust and wily – in fact, some of them, like the leopard tortoise and rhinoceros beetle, are even tougher than the Big Five!” Ralph was inspired to share his fascination for these small creatures with children, and wrote The Small Five to bring them into the big picture. Ralph grew up on a traditional Malaysian fishing boat in Singapore and, after spending his younger years in Asia, moved to Africa in the early 1990s. Since 2008, he and his family have called Australia home.
About the Illustrator
Harriet Stanes was born in 1973 in Dorset, England. She moved to the island of Guernsey during her teen years and went on to study Graphic Design and Illustration in Bath. Following numerous visits to east Africa, she relocated to Kenya in 1999, having been lured by adventure and safaris with friends some years earlier. Living on the outskirts of the cosmopolitan metropolis of Nairobi, with the edge of an entire animal kingdom close by, she was absorbed by the sights, colours and dramas of life in Kenya. Armed with a dip pen, little pots of ink and a fine tipped brush, Harriet developed her illustrative style by pulling ideas from the humour found in the detail of this extraordinarily colourful life.

This fantastic second series of colour‐in jigsaw puzzles will challenge and delight artistic jigsaw‐lovers of all ages! The 500 piece puzzle is the perfect combination of stimulation and relaxation. First challenge yourself by putting the puzzle together. Then relax and de‐stress by colouring ‐in this stunning image. You can bring the colourful Day of the Dead inspired scene to life with the included 6 coloured markers. The perfect way to mark this November festival, Halloween or just create a striking image for any time! Selling Points •This is a stand‐apart product! This intersects with both the traditional puzzle market, as well as the very popular adult‐ colouring craze. The special, uncoated stock, also allows you to colour with ease. • Perfect for anyone who likes to demonstrate their jigsaw and artistic skills. This is a perfect novelty present or a great hobby for oneself.
