OCTOBER 2017
October 2017 I had the time to attend Mick Woiwod's book launch the other Sunday and was compelled to take to the pen (keyboard) over it. His book is Barak vs The Black Hats of Melbourne. It is the story of how the “force” of the white elders of Melbourne of the time treated the indigenous tribes as near to vermin or as if they had been invaded and were being sent to a lower class of life. Very strong words. It makes me try to reconcile why my recollection of the history that I had read to this stage was blank on the subject of Barak – his acumen, his leadership and the bullying that assisted his tribe into the backblocks of Victoria. The “Black Hats “ eventually considered Coranderrk as the suitable place for their important hunting of introduced foreign species of animals; the like of Deer, Salmon; anything you could shoot and hang on a trophy wall or feed to the dogs. I can’t stop thinking that the next time I am at a place where Peter Fitzsimons is speaking I should speak up for our local man Barak as a great subject of the Fitzsimons guile on the writing / story telling craft. I then reflected that I watched every episode of the outstanding Robert Redford (as Executive Producer) series The American West on History channel last year (The History of the Wild West). Barak’s story is the equivalent of storylines in that series. It is Mick’s 30th something title he has written – what an accomplishment. If you question the value of search engines, instagram, and all the other money churning devices you will find enduring value in the written word – this book is so much for readers and thinkers. We must endeavour to see if there are school lists to do with the real history of Australia. Oddly the other book in my bag was The Red Chief by Ion Idriess. Strangely at the Mick launch he spoke in favour of Idriess as being one of the few to write well about our aboriginal history. The Red Chief is a story set in what could be prehistoric times as the white man had not landed. The story is taken by one of the last of the tribe who orally tells it to the local policeman at Gunnedah. Idriess then develops the story. So if you have not read a story of some original inhabitants of Australia – try The Red Chief. I can’t say it is an equal of Clan of the Cave Bear as I have not read any of the Jean Auel’s – however it is from anytime in the last 10,000 years. I felt moved so much I then reached to purchase the eBook version of Nemarluk; another of the Idriess works, (you can probably tell I am travelling)
The Disruptive Paradigm One of the other hand the benefit of the internet is that you do discover news. Like reading about the upcoming motion picture based on the book An Awesome Ride – by Shaun Miller and Graeme Leslie Brosnan. More than three million people across the world were moved and inspired by Shaun Wilson-Miller's tragic farewell message on YouTube. Shaun had undergone two heart transplants and spent most of his life in hospital, only to be diagnosed with chronic heart rejection shortly after his seventeenth birthday. In the face of this heartache, Shaun had one message, "stay positive and live life to the full." This is his untold story: the pawn in the middle of a war between his parents; the victim of assault and landing the girl of his dreams. The following is from the Herald Sun June 29th 2017 about Shaun - “Shaun was one of eight children born a day with CHD and sadly four children lose their battle every week. He’s touched people the world over.” The film is called Awesome Ride and will be produced by father-and-daughter team James M Vernon and Kristy L Vernon. Rising actor Gulliver McGrath plays Shaun, and Shane Jacobson plays Cameron, Shaun's father. Shaun’s favourite movie was Jacobson’s hit Kenny. “It’ll be a film that resonates around the world. It is very sincere and very real,’’ Dolen said. “It’s like Australia’s Forrest Gump — a beautiful, whimsical story. “He had his first love, his first kiss and then had to face his worst possible fear.” Visit theshaunmillerfoundation.org/donate And in closing a thought to those on this side of the world to do with retail. “’The US has 23.5 square feet of retail space per person, compared with 16.4 square feet in Canada and 11.1 square feet in Australia — the next two countries with the highest retail space per capita, according to a Morningstar report from October”’. This came after we were visiting one of the local shopping malls and thought about its unhealthy state of both patronage and stores doing business – other than Verizon, Sprint and the Apple store. Thanks Dennis Jones

The Iron Roads of the Australian Outback - the legendary Commonwealth Railways were built through some of the harshest landscapes on Earth. They were railways like no other, where men and women battled extreme temperatures, flash floods and maddening isolation to keep the trains running. This publication is the culmination of 25 years of Outback exploration, research, photography and interviews by author Nick Anchen. The result is a diverse book which brings to life both the beauty and harshness of the Australian Outback, through a collection of fascinating and historic images, along with the memories of former Commonwealth Railways employees. Following an introductory chapter on the vastness and grandeur of the Australian interior - highlighted by the memoirs of 1950s flying doctor Macarthur Job - the book delves into the story of the Central Australia Railway. This was the line built through the 'back of beyond' - the forbidding desert country of South Australia and the Northern Territory. It was here that operators of famous trains such as The Ghan battled searing heat, dust storms and raging floodwaters to keep the trains running. The chapter includes stories by well known Ghan conductor 'Aspro' Lyons, and 'Piano Playing Chef' Paddy Greenfield - along with enginemen Wolf Markowski and John Theel, both of whom worked trains on this famous railway. The story of the North Australia Railway - 'The Line to Nowhere' - is the tale of a ramshackle railway which came alive during the dark days of World War II. The memoirs of wartime engineman Jim Prentice are eye opening, as are the hair raising accounts of surviving Tropical Cyclone Tracy, as told by rolling stock foreman Bill Donaldson. The Trans-Australian Railway was built across one of the harshest and loneliest environments on Earth - the vast Nullarbor Plain. Stories from enginemen Jack Slattery and Ron Howrie, along with Nullarbor resident and roadmaster's wife Cathy Beek, tell not only of the rudimentary living conditions and maddening isolation, but of the great camaraderie amongst the railway people who kept trains such as the Trans-Australian and the Tea and Sugar running. As well as examining the ruins and relics from the long-closed CR narrow gauge lines, the book also includes a chapter on the much-loved Pichi Richi Railway - the last surviving portion of that great Transcontinental Railway dream from another age.

Ever dreamed how YOU could do that? Make your fortune but start out with nothing? Just read Win Big Risk Small and you will see how it is done. With no higher education, no family fortune and armed only with a burning desire to succeed, Dorry Kordahi went from being a suburban hairdresser, to being the head of an incredibly diverse group of companies. He achieved this by turning his formula into breathtaking reality and is now one of Australia's most highly respected and high‐profile entrepreneurs. Locked away in a safe are three scraps of paper covered in scribble. These outline Dorry's original formula. They might not look much yet they rapidly translated into what became one of Australia's most exciting start‐ups and is now a market leader. Using his unique business formula, Dorry Kordahi founded DKM Global, from the garage in his parents' back yard in late 2002 while still in his mid‐twenties. In one of the world's most competitive industries with more than 4000 competitors in Australia alone, his star swiftly shone bright and he soon took the lead. Today DKM Global is the market leader in the field of marketing and merchandise solutions but, as the result of several carefully orchestrated acquisitions and investments, now encompasses numerous women's and men's fashion companies, a fashion sock company and a large, blue chip portfolio of corporate uniform clients.
Author Information Dorry is a highly experienced and successful entrepreneur whose ambition and expertise has seen him continually and successfully entering into new ventures and acquisitions, both in Australia and numerous other countries. He was, in particular, a pioneer of direct importing from China and has a long established office, warehouse and manufacturing facility in Shanghai. His expertise ranges the worlds of promotional merchandise, corporate clothing, fashion, publishing mentoring and writing. The son of migrant parents, he is a former professional basketball player who left school without any qualifications and did not attend university. After brief stints working for other companies, Dorry started his own in his early twenties with no money of his own or financial backing from others and has gone on to be one of the richest men under forty in Australia with a string of awards and accolades to his name. Currently Dorry is looking to launch several of his various enterprises onto the global, online market platform. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

Gender equality in sport is a hot issue of our time, with the women's league in AFL being pushed this year and the prominence of issues surrounding gender equality in sport maintaining a bright spotlight in the media. Sport of Queens reveals the history of women in Australian horse racing from Wilhelmina 'Bill' Smith who secretly rode as a man at race meetings across North Queensland in the 1940's and 50's to the exploits and struggles of jockeys such as Linda Jones, Pam O'Neil and Beverley Buckingham in the 70's and 80's and the successes of women such as Clare Lindop, Gai Waterhouse, and Michelle Payne in more recent times. As well as an historic analysis, Sport of Queens contains eleven chapters each dedicated to a female racing legend in which she discusses the successes and challenges of her career and the issues she believes the racing industry currently faces. Jockeys, trainers, breeders, judges, syndicators, promoters, race-callers and photographers are all included. From a history of exclusion and a struggle for recognition to a slow acceptance in a male-dominated industry, the race for women to be taken seriously may have turned for home but there's a long straight ahead. Also included is a section titled 'He Said, She Said' with quotes from men and woman that show the entrenched prejudices that still exist in racing alongside the progress being made. Through extensive research, interviews and with his own long history as a racing reporter to draw on, Shane McNally presents an in-depth look at what goes on behind the scenes in the industry in Australia compared to the rest of the world. Author Information The plight of women in racing has intrigued Shane McNally since he worked at the South Australian Jockey Club in his youth and heard colleagues dismiss visiting rider Therese Payne (Michelle’s sister) as a ‘sheila’ who couldn’t ride, even though she was an outstanding jockey who outrode many of the men. Shane McNally has been a racing journalist and writer for thirty years. He started work writing for Racetrack Magazine, then Turf Monthly, Thoroughbred Times (in the US) and now for Gallop (in Europe). He also wrote the Turf Heroes documentary and has worked on radio and with Tabcorp as a tipster and contributor. Pedigree analyst and racing and breeding journalist, Kristen Manning, has written the foreword for Sport of Queens. She is featured in the book, as she has ‘become something of a breeding expert’ . She is also a highly regarded racing journalist and the author of two books: Prince of Penzance and Fields of Omagh.

After 45 years, here is the first book on the SUNBURY rock festival, the festival that is often referred to as 'Australia's Woodstock' that heralded a revolution in Australian music and culture. This book explores the history of the Sunbury rock festivals which were staged over the Australia Day long weekends of 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975. These, and the festivals which immediately preceded them, were staged at a time of renewal in Australian political and cultural life and a new awakening of national identity. The emphasis is on the first festival in 1972 as this was the ground‐breaking event which, if it did not conceive Aussie pub rock was, at the very least, the midwife. In that birth can be seen the beginnings of Australian rock music transitioning from a poor cousin to that in America and the United Kingdom to an active export industry. Sunbury '72 is covered in detail, with the emphasis on subsequent festivals being on the changes which occurred both in the event and in the dominant music scene at the time. The book identifies the strength of the Sunbury festivals in the organisation that lay behind them, which allowed them to be more than just a single event. It also explores the musical highlights of the festivals and the experiences of those who attended. The book is heavily based on official documents and an extensive oral history program undertaken by the author.
Author Information Peter Evans was involved in the staging of the Sunbury Festivals from day one and designed and operated the stage lighting for the first three festivals. He attended the fourth and final festival as a guest of the organisers. For the fortyfour years between January 1969 and October 2013, Peter worked in the technical sector of the performing arts. This included three years in theatre, television and rock music lighting; seventeen years in film, television, radio and live audio production; and twenty-four years in the technical production of corporate theatre, including AGMs, product launches, and major public celebrations. Interspersed in those years were three years of professional heritage assessment and report writing. He is currently semi-retired, and works part-time in the steam operations department of a large regional museum. The remainder of his time is taken up with the writing of books, magazine articles and heritage assessments. Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

'Ask anyone with a gluten allergy or intolerance what they miss most and I guarantee baked goods will rank highly on the list. If you feel yourself nodding in agreement or if you have experienced the exasperation of gluten intolerant friends and family, then this book is for you. These easily achievable, mouthwatering recipes are so delicious you would never even know they are gluten free. They are easy to make but do not compromise on taste or quality....After many years of experimenting with various gluten free ingredients, I can confidently say the recipes in this book will deliver the bounciest bread and yummiest chocolate cake you have ever tasted. Anyone who loves crispy, chewy molten cookies and 'you must give me the recipe' cakes will enjoy this book gluten allergy or not.' - From Hungry & Fussy 'Introduction'. Helen has a following of over 13.5 thousand people on Instagram alone. She is well known as an accomplished food photographer and for her delicious and easy gluten-free recipes. Not only are the recipes catered for a modern audience with short, easy methods and easy-to-find ingredients. Includes simple variations for Thermomix users. Author Information 'In 2007, I discovered I was a coeliac. I was only diagnosed as an adult during IVF treatment when my doctor suspected it, given my infertility and history of anaemia and lethargy. Blood tests and a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. In the early days I had to drive ten kilometres and pay over ten dollars for a dense loaf of gluten free bread that felt as heavy as a brick and could only be (partly) salvaged by the toaster. But in recent years, the market for gluten free products has exploded as more people are being diagnosed with a gluten intolerance or coeliac disease. Despite the fact I'm the only one in my immediate family with a gluten intolerance, my family mainly eat gluten free at home for two reasons - firstly I don't have time to make five different dinners, and secondly they would never even suspect the coating on the crispy, golden-crumbed chicken is gluten free. To them it tastes delicious and that's all they care about. When I became a mum, I spent more time at home finessing my cooking skills by experimenting with different recipes. Something that bothers me though, is whenever I trawl bookstores in search of a great gluten free cookbook I find they generally fall into two categories. They are either super niche, like gluten free and vegan (not appealing to a Greek raised on roast lamb and feta), or the recipes are overcomplicated with obscure ingredient lists as long as my arm. Recipes don't need to be long and complicated to taste great. Quite often, the difficult ones are not memorable and leave you regretting all that time spent on those ten extra steps and hours spent sourcing that centrifuge thingy that chefs use! I’m happy to leave the trickery to Heston. I'm a realistic and pragmatic cook. I understand that in real life most families are time poor and don't have hours to spend over the stovetop. For this reason, I decided to collate my easy delicious recipes, loved by family and friends, into a beautifully photographed cookbook. These are the recipes that have woven their way into my heart over the years; they are the recipes that I go back to again and again.'- From Hungry & Fuss 'Introduction' Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

There's the low-down on Vietnamese coffee and where to get a good one. Plus, celebrity chef and HCMC resident Luke Nguyen spills the juice on where he likes to dine in town. Addresses are in Vietnamese for ease of travel, and everything is gorgeously photographed, so you know exactly what you're aiming for. - Easy-to-navigate with colour photography throughout - Features a handy map, with major landmarks and restaurant locations marked - Addresses are in local language, for ease of on-the-ground use - Is pocketable, is exceptional value and has user-friendly content - Restaurants for all budgets, with an emphasis on affordable options - Listings put the traveller in the thick of local-style dining Author Information RedPorkPress is a small, dynamic publishing company founded by New Zealander Antony Suvalko and Sydney‐based Leanne Kitchen. So many places to visit, so many delicious things to eat. Where to start, in a strange, new city? These nifty guides take visitors through the potentially bewildering process of finding authentic eats, across a variety of destinations. With a focus on what to eat, as much as where to eat, IN 12 DISHES will appeal to food‐centric travellers who desire meaningful dining experiences across the gamut. The core assumption is that travellers want to plunge headfirst into local stap les ‐ iconic dishes that define a place. They want pad thai in Bangkok, bun cha in Hanoi, pao mo in Xi'an, shojin ryori in Kyoto and assam laksa in Penang. But...where to find the best? Highlighting12 must‐eat dishes, with meaty information on where to find them, there's more than enough to give travellers the food heads‐up. Depending on the city, there will also be features on cooking schools, regional restaurants, great cafes, food markets, day trips, walking tours and local eating etiquette. Gorgeously photographed and written in a snappy, engaging style, IN 12 DISHES is the indispensable guide for food‐obsessed travellers.

If it bleeds ‐ it leads! Author Information Mal Walden was 17 years of age when he applied for his first job in media and found himself in the blocks of an amazing race to be first with breaking news. At age 70, he gracefully crossed the finishing line to be recognised as the longest serving newsman on Australian television.

'You'll never be a journalist's bootlace!' During his cadetship in the early '60s, Mal Walden heard these words frequently from his news editor and media mentor, John Maher. Walden not only proved his mentor wrong, he went on to become the longest‐serving newsman on Australian television. From a career starting in country Victoria radio, Walden went on to work in Launceston and Melbourne, and then finally made the shift to television as news anchor for channels 7 and 10. Each year he maintained a journal in which he recorded his many serendipitous and life‐changing moments. These memories form a record ‐ not only of his life as a newsman ‐ but of the evolution of television news, which is now in its sixtieth year and facing what many proclaim is the imminent 'death of news' in all its traditional forms. This is the story behind the stories we think we know. A very personal look at the public face of news by one of the most well‐loved and respected news presenters of our time.

Andrew Wilson has an eye for the dramatic and this is a very fresh pictorial portrait of Tasmania. There are extreme wilderness spots reached only by sea and some others of inhabited and favorite recreational areas, but all of them show the beauty and the extremes brought about by being in the path of the roaring forties. Andrew Wilson is fast being recognised as the preeminent contemporary Tasmanian photographer and this book supports and enhances that claim.

Louise Davitt, a young Australian anthropologist, and Zeno Wolde, an Ethiopian doctor and fellow anthropologist, research and explore isolated villages and tribal lands in Ethiopia, making fascinating discoveries about the people, the environment and themselves. While working for reform to lift poor peasants out of poverty, they fall in love and marry then have a child. Zeno's work takes him away from home for long stretches of time, then he disappears. Louise visits family in London and is diagnosed with HIV, contracted from Zeno. With effective management and drugs, Louise copes with her serious illness and its stigma‐a stigma that at the time in Ethiopia and Kenya, made it impossible for Zeno to seek appropriate treatment. She meets a Norwegian doctor, Haawkon Davos, and builds a new career with its reach and compassion for people with HIV/AIDS, especially across Africa.
Author Information Roger Rees is an academic who has taught at Australian and US universities. He has published many nonfiction books, articles in journals and scripts for ABC Science Show. He has run a trauma rehabilitation program for people with brain injury, neurological disorders such as primary and secondary MS and for people diagnosed with HIV. This is his first fiction book. He travelled to Ethiopia and walked with the Hamar tribe in preparation for No Turning Back.

AVAILABLE NOW Australian Arnold Rosen is celebrating his 70th birthday with his family aboard a cruise ship in the Mediterranean. By coincidence, on the same cruise ship, the American Gus Smith and his family are also celebrating his 70th. The two men meet. They are identical in appearance but clearly not related. Arnold is the son of Jewish Holocaust survivors, while Gus' parents were German ‐ indeed, his father was a rabid anti‐Semite. It seems they are doppelgangers, or 'doubles'. However, it may be more complicated than that. Not only were the two men born on the same day, it turns out that they were both born in the same small town, in post‐war Germany. The two men's backgrounds are so different that despite their similarities, there is surely no possibility that they could be related... What will they uncover when they travel to Waiblingen, the small town in Germany where they were both born, to seek the truth?
Author Information David Finchley practices as a neurologist, and writes fiction in his spare time. He has published three books before Doppelgangers.

In the 1860's in the Colony of Victoria, Tabu an aborigine goes 'walkabout' after a violent tribal fight during which his brother is killed. He rescues the wife of a drover/farmer ‐ Michael, who is an escaped Convict. He hires Tabu, to help him drove sheep into the mainly unexplored northern districts of Victoria to the Murray River. Only a few hardy explorers and drovers had previously been through this country when bringing stock overland from Sydney to Melbourne. Their droving encounters many difficulties, crossing several rivers ‐ bushfires ‐ floods ‐ theft of sheep and aborigine conflict. Parallel family stories involve an aborigine battle ‐ wild dog attacks ‐ water rights and attempted piracy. The Novel also includes other tales involving their family's trial and tribulations, bordering on truth and fiction. The Author's knowledge of Australian history has helped him interweave tales of early settlers and aboriginal lifestyles to bring together significant events that occurred within Michael's and Tabu's family. The Colony's scenery and unique animals are also vividly described, together with a surprising conclusion for Michael. Collectively these descriptions have helped to complete an exciting must read story 'Of days gone by' and will be of interest to all readers, and will increase the knowledge of students of Australian History.
Author Information John P. F. Lynch has written several local history books and the history of his maternal ancestors. His mother's great great grandparents all settled in the Kyneton area of Victoria in the 1840‐50's. He is a member of both the Kyneton and Romsey Historical Societies, both of which helped with his research for his books. John is a member of the Order of Australia, a Knight Hospitaller of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and a Justice of the Peace. He is also the President of the Romsey/Lancefield RSL Sub Branch and former President/Secretary of the Romsey Football/Netball Club as well as Chairman of the Macedon Ranges Legacy Group.

It's the 1980's, and two families, the Costas and the Delaneys find themselves grappling the onslaught of life in a Melbourne suburb. Lost relationships, lost innocence and lost beauty, ubiquitous in a world where all that is precious can disappear in a moment. Two families find themselves intertwined in a complex orbital relationship, where each action triggers a reaction and events spin in seemingly uncontrollable retrograde. Down the road at the local, The Tavern Hotel, lives destined to collide intersect through the most unpredictable event. The cataclysmic unfolds in triumph and tragedy. Rabbi Dr Shimon Cowen has assembled this title as the basis of a course on Judaism and aesthetics. It encompasses both pieces addressing the theory of this subject as well as analysis of examples of the work of major Australian Jewish artists ‐ in painting (Victor Majzner), writing (Richard Freadman) and music (Felix Werder). He also has a segment addressed to practical issues of the pedagogy, the teaching and encouragement of the arts, informed by traditional Judaism.
Author Information Rabbi Dr Shimon Cowen, son of a former Governor General of Australia, Sir Zelman Cowen OBM, has a dual background in secular and religious studies. He has a PhD in social philosophy. He has been a Senior Research Fellow at Monash University and Program Director of a postgraduate Rabbinic Institute, the Kollel Menachem Lubavitch in Melbourne. In 1998 he “fused” these strands in the establishment of the Institute for Judaism and Civilization as its founding Director.

Tom Raker flees any number of villains as they seek murder and mayhem. Part fact, part fiction, this novel is based on research into two quite separate phenomena. Over the last forty years Howard Birnstihl has discovered vulnerable age cycles within certain creative types, similar to those discussed by Gail Sheehy in her books Passages and Pathfinders. He has delved a lot deeper. Also, an avid film watcher, he slowly developed an awareness of a basic colour coding movie makers employ to which the general public is totally unaware. Over the years there has been hardly a word written on this subject. This colour coding has become entrenched in both mainstream movies as well as the majority of television dramas. It is about time the public was made aware. Included are details of the age cycle syndrome as well as 50 or so film reviews which illustrate the depth to which this colour code system is entrenched.
Author Information Howard Birnstihl, art teacher come photographer turned writer is prolific with both camera and pen. Supplying Australian publishing with photographic illustration for decades, his unique unobtrusive sociological studies have graced thousands of books and magazines, including many of his own. Turning to writing articles on nature, architecture and film, he now is a writer of novels, the wide subject range reflecting his diverse interests. His strong interest in film is borne out in his two first major novels, The Colour of Film Noir where he has uncovered a secret colour coding used in mainstream movies completely unobserved by the public, and Heroine, a fascinating look at the early pioneers of the Australian film industry seen through the eyes of a family who not only decide to shoot their own movie but set out to travel the backblocks to share their love of the art form with the people of the bush.

Jack Ryder, ranching in the high country, dreams of becoming foreman and marrying the boss' daughter, but he blows it. A disconsolate six months in a drunken haze sees him sitting in the drizzling rain, gun in hand, the end in mind. In a blinding moment of sanity, envisaging a fresh perspective, he heads off in an attempt to make it a reality. Needless to say, old habits die hard with many trials faced, women wooed and men meeting their maker. Jack, stirring the local roughnecks into violence sees him using his side‐arm in anger for the first time. A cat and mouse game ensues with the local sheriff as Jack unwittingly involves his newfound Mexican family in his lawless acts. Life begins to mellow, until the advent of the banditos and Rodriguez, the local land baron. Jack finds a unique way to even the balance and with luck may find that maturity and comfort he seeks.
Author Information Sam Spencer who has long had a fascination for the history of both America and Australia writes mainly of the pioneering days of his native USA. Westerns with a difference, no shoot‐em‐ups at noon in Main Street, he delves into the motivations of each character, seeking to find what drives them and how they cope with the adventures life serves up on the pioneering trail. His heroes are complicated creatures, full of doubts and fears but always seeking a better life, wanting to be remembered for the good they did rather than the men they killed or the women they left behind.

School mates reunited after forty years, each having spent the intervening time interpreting the world around them ‐ Howard with his low key, whimsical eye, Tony in meticulously selected words, both acute observers of life and its many foibles. Sometimes echoing the other's thoughts, sometimes fiercely independent, both authors display a unique and distinct view, inviting us to share their vision. Unlike the modern tendency to shock and amaze, the photographs work quietly on the viewer, beckoning us to be a silent witness to a world we have been part of as they hark back to recent decades of Life in Australia. How things have changed, but how much they have stayed the same. London's poems likewise, have that uncanny knack of pinpointing those many thoughts we have but perhaps can never express.

From this last scenario, his book High Hopes, was published by the Library of Tibetan Works in India in August of last year. He has a long history as a recognized writer of poetry and has had poems published widely in Australian literary journals, newspapers and broadcast on the ABC.

Wattle Creek is a typical Australian country town in the rapidly changing world of the 1960s ‐ draft dodgers, mass migration of the young to the city, hippies, local industry dying and the once proud footy team struggling to keep up the numbers. Thank God 6 o'clock closing is now a thing of the past. Jock Hathaway, retired post master, his mind a whirr at the wonder of life's many mysteries, is never idle. Those around him can only watch in bemusement as we follow him on his latest venture. We meet many of the town folk and begin to see what makes a rural community tick. An inveterate handyman, always ready to help, particularly the ladies, he must also tend to the wishes of the wife's belligerent hospital‐bound brother. All this, and managing his new scheme, is becoming a nightmare. Oh, and by the way, have I mentioned the son‐in‐law?
Author Information Garnet James writes with the eye and humour of a boy from the bush. As Aussie as a gumnut and with tongue permanently embedded in cheek, he writes about the Australia of yesteryear. If you’ve ever lived in a country town he’ll have you nodding wisely, a smile ever present. There is a universality in his themes but the flavour is always truly Oz.

Christmas Eve 2013 is a day Julie Metaxotos can't remember but will never forget. A normal morning became a day like no other when her car was involved in a serious collision and her life was fractured. Out of her crumpled car they pulled her broken body, unsure whether she would survive. But no one could have known, not even Julie herself, the extent of the fighting spirit and massive determination that would see her win battles, beat setbacks and overcome hurdles over the next two years on the journey back to health. Losing control of her life and limbs, she had to reset her beliefs, her expectations and her hopes to rebuild herself and her world. The challenges that burdened her time and time again hurt as much as the many broken bones, but she never let them beat her, to the continued amazement of her family, friends, doctors and rehabilitation team. She won the fight for life and for health, and along the way won the hearts of everyone she encountered. This is her story.

Netball Dreamz
United High always put best friends together. That has to be right! It's a new beginning, and now that Sally can email Gillian Lee for netball advice, she can't wait for school netball trials. Until she sees the competition. This is going to be tough! While the whole school goes Festival of Food, Music and Fun crazy, Sally and Nat face their toughest challenges. Just when they are ready to give up their netball dream, Aunty Faye comes to the rescue. With new friends, old foes and teachers Sally never expected to deal with again, it's a disastrous start to Year 7. But Sally and Nat have never been quitters!
Author Information Leeanne Vernon - Leeanne is the seventh of nine children; six brothers and two sisters. Life was tough growing up, but Leeanne always loved netball and writing, which gave her something positive to focus on. Leeanne wrote her first play in grade five, which was performed before the entire school. Ambitiously, she tried to write her first novel in Form 2 (Year Eight). However, it took nearly thirty years, two occupations and three children, before she got the opportunity to follow her dream and study Professional Writing and Editing. Since graduating, Leeanne has been writing, or editing her work, every day. In co-writing the Netball Dreamz series, Leeanne combines her two greatest loves: writing and netball. Leeanne has never lost her passion for netball. She is an – Intermediate Netball Coach – and it is with this knowledge of the game that she is able to weave Gillian’s netball activities into the story of Sally, Nat and the Central Park grade six netball team. Gillian Lee - Gillian is the youngest of three daughters. She comes from a netball family; her mum and two older sisters played netball. Gillian spent Saturday mornings, and many a night, watching her mum and sisters playing netball and she longed to be old enough to play too. When Gillian was in grade five, (that’s the same age as many of you readers!) she finally got her opportunity, and what a stunning debut. She played goaler and her team won the grand final! Perhaps all those years of watching netball made Gillian hungry for netball success, or maybe it was the advice of her mother who said, “Go mad, go and do everything”, because it was the start of a wonderful netball career. Gillian first played in the city for an under 16’s representative team. From here she was selected as a defender for the Victorian under 16’s and her elite netball journey began. She played in many great teams along the way, including the Australian under 21’s. However, one of Gillian’s fondest netball memories is playing in a team with her mum and sisters called, MKs, or mums and kids. Gillian is now a well respected coach and coach educator, both nationally and internationally, as well as an author of netball books and a netball coaching DVD series. Following on from the success of So Wrong, Michael Wagner and Wayne Bryant have put together book 2 in the series, and crammed it full of more: ‐short stories ‐satirical advertisements ‐highly suspect 'life advice' ‐naughty cartoons and other visual delights ‐and laughs on every page. As two former reluctant readers themselves, Michael and Wayne are creating the series they wish had existed when they were kids, the series that would have hooked them onto reading. It's a hyperactive, but good‐natured blend of Mad magazine, Andy Griffiths, Roald Dahl and anything else subversive that's always on the side of the child. It's also undoubtedly wrong, but so right for young readers, especially those who haven't quite fallen in love with books. Yet.

Written to inspire imaginative play, this rhyming recount depicts the adventures of two small girls who create costumes from household junk and craft supplies. Ending in a challenge, it is the perfect resource for Early Childhood Educators. Manufactured using FSC and recycled paper
Author Information I was born in the small country town of St George in South-West Queensland, Australia where I was fortunate to spend my childhood living on my parents’ cotton farm. As a child I loved stories and would often write and illustrate little books. It has been my life-long dream to be an author and illustrator. As a teenager I was discouraged to pursue this as a career due to the competitive nature of the book industry. Thoroughly enjoying the idea of working with young children and delighting at the chance to discover first hand from classroom experience, what works well in children’s literature, I embarked on a teaching career spanning a decade and a half. The majority of which was teaching in a North London School in England. As a dedicated teacher I did not have a great deal of time to focus on any writing or illustrating – however I greatly enjoyed many European holidays! I returned to my hometown where I had the privilege of teaching at my old Primary School under my former Headmaster for 18 months. Later moving on to a private school in North Brisbane. After having my two boys and taking a break from teaching, I was blest to have the opportunity to write and illustrate my first book “The Magic In Boxes”.

Parmesan, the racehorse, thinks he's a dog. Instead of training with other horses, he's off with his doggy friends playing doggy games. Will he be ready to run like a racehorse in the Spring Carnival? A humorous light‐hearted tale that celebrates the joy of being yourself and running your own race.
Author Information Jacqui Halpin's passion for children's literature started when reading bedtime stories to her children. They outgrew their childhood books but Jacqui never did. Jacqui writes junior fiction, picture books, and short stories (for adults and children). Her short stories appear in anthologies by Stringybark Publishing and Creative Kids Tales. Jacqui has also co-written her father's memoir, A Long Way from Misery, as she believes it's important to record the tales of Australia's older generations before they are lost. While writing and editing, Jacqui loves to sip tea from fine china and eat copious amounts of chocolate. She has a love of bookshops, and should never be allowed to enter the children's book section with a credit card in her possession. Please visit Jacqui’s website at www.jacquihalpin.com About the Illustrator John Phillips is a self taught artist and musician and has been creative all his life. His skills soon caught the eye of a national company and he was employed full time for many years, producing everything from cartoons, children's birthday cards, and sympathy card scenes right through to calligraphy and advertising material. It was during this time that John also began landscape painting with some success, but the artist’s first love though is illustrating. "I do have a rather weird sense of humour," he says, "and I love to capture all sorts of animals in outlandish, goofy situations."

Her involvement with the children's writing industry is extensive as a past President of the CBCA Sutherland branch and founder of Creative Kids Tales; an industry recognised website dedicated to assisting Australian emerging children's authors. She even took her love of writing to the airwaves with The Author's Shelf via community radio. https://www.creativekidstales.com.au About the Illustrator Emma Middleton is an award winning writer, illustrator and artist. Many past and present tributaries feed the wellspring for Emma’s creative passion, but it has two main sources. The first was a career as a professional ballet dancer with the Vienna Ballet in Europe before going on to establish her own Dance Academy in Melbourne. The second was a successful career as a visual artist exhibiting work in prominent galleries throughout Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Now, in children's literature, Emma has found a place where her two past worlds have a natural creative collaboration. Her books bring literature to life through the rhythm of music, the drama of story, and the colour of art. Please visit her website at www.emmamiddleton.com

Buddy is so happy his family picked him! He would love to introduce you to them one by one, and tell you just how special they are. A gorgeous book for dog owners wondering what their dog thinks of them! (Hint: they adore you.)
Author Information Anita is an experienced primary school teacher who has recently published five teacher resources books for mathematics, including a series of books for Years 1 to 6 with a focus on problem solving. My Humans is her first children’s picture story book. Hopefully the first of many! Inspiration for this story has come from her own family which consists of one crazy husband, two energetic kids, one lazy dog, one sunbaking lizard and two lively fish! All of whom are very supportive of her constant writing, typing and scribbling. It’s the adventures they have been on, the experiences they have had and the fun they have shared that provides her with endless ideas for her stories. Anita currently works as a primary school teacher part time as well as lecturing at Monash University. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Graduate Certificate in Education Research. Anita has always had a passion for quality children’s literature and has used books in the classroom to immerse students in a range of learning experiences across all areas of the curriculum. Anita hopes to publish many more stories about Buddy and the adventures he has with his family. Engaging and captivating stories about their lives told through the eyes of Buddy! About The Illustrator Michelle Ferguson lives on the Mornington Peninsula, with her noisy husband, two energetic boys, a geriatric Labrador who thinks he’s a puppy, two chickens who think it’s normal for chickens to be licked, kissed and cuddled, and four sensible gold fish … who hide. Michelle takes adventures, musings and daily family antics and tries to translate them into pictures ... in hope that those pictures will make someone smile. She uses a range of traditional mediums and creates mixed media work. Michelle works part-time as a primary school teacher and enjoys sharing her love of illustrations and picture books. She will blab on and on to anyone who will listen about how important and powerful good picture books are for big kids as well as little kids. During her teaching degree Michelle majored in Children’s Literature. She went on to complete post graduate studies in Children’s Literature and also holds a degree in Contemporary Visual Arts and a Diploma of Illustration. Meg is Tune Town's best music performer, but she's having trouble rehearsing. So much trouble, in fact, that the notes have run right off the sheet! Can Meg find the notes in time for her big concert? Or are they closer to home than she thought? A colourful book for music‐loving‐and‐learning kids of all ages.
Author Information Maura loves words and has been writing ever since she can remember. Her children started music lessons at an early age, but never really enjoyed practising their instruments, often becoming frustrated when they couldn’t play the right notes. Maura thought learning a song should focus less on playing the notes correctly and more on experiencing and enjoying the music. This was the inspiration for The Trouble in Tune Town, Maura’s first picture book, and its heartfelt message: If you’re having fun, then you're playing all right. Maura also writes for the stage and for young adults. Over the years, she has crafted news and information as a medical journalist, magazine editor, small business owner, marketing consultant and ethicist. She has a PhD in philosophy and enjoys talking about big ideas. Maura lives in Canberra with her husband and their three children, now teenagers. She loves the touch and feel of books, old typewriters, thunderstorms and cheesecake. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, and travelling to new places. She tries to learn something new every day, but to make it fun. About the Illustrator Sophie’s artistic talents were soon discovered by New Frontier Publishing, as a work experience student there. She has written and illustrated her own book, Lisa Absolutely Loves Art, and her illustrated work for Yellow Dress Day put her on the shortlist for the 2013 CBCA Crichton Award. Her other illustrated works include Matilda Saves Santa Claus, Emilia Mouse, Elephant Kitten and Where Do Teachers Go at Night? Sophie enjoys playing across styles and mediums of illustration.

The Bolton Boys Balloon Adventure is the first in a series of four books to help children learn phonemic awareness. Through stunningly detailed illustrations from Sarah Hardy, and clever and engaging stories from teacher and wordsmith, Barbara Murray, children will have a joyful introduction to phonemic awareness and synthetic phonics. Author Information Barbara Murray was a primary school teacher for many years before she began writing Sound Waves, a Whole School Phonemic Approach to Reading and Spelling in 2000. The program is now widely used across Australia and in some schools overseas. Teaching was her passion, and a phonemic approach featured daily in all her classes across the whole primary school. She loved developing a curiosity about language in her students. Today, the third edition of Sound Waves includes an amazing, interactive website set up by her publisher, Firefly Education, that provides schools with a huge range of games, activities, teaching ideas and support, as well as the original student activity books and teacher resource books. A phonemic approach to literacy is based on the 43 sounds we use in Australian spoken English. The very first step is to introduce the 43 sounds to beginning readers and writers. Barbara is now publishing 43 stories illustrated by Sarah Hardy and compiled by Little Steps, for teachers and parents to introduce the 43 sounds to young children. These stories will be spread across a set of four beautifully illustrated books, Sound Stories. About the Illustrator The kind of art that sparks the imagination. The kind of art that is the stuff of dreams. The kind of art that inspires boys and girls, and adults too. The kind of art that is whimsical, quirky and so unique you want to embrace it and make it yours. In short, much applauded artist, Sarah Hardy produces the kind of art that connects human hearts. Even her company name, PopcornBlue conjures up images that delight the imagination, and Sarah just loves to produce art in various formats, from high quality archival art prints, to magnets, stickers, cards and original artworks. As a senior graphic designer and illustrator, Sarah is a seasoned professional with the requisite experience to hone her craft well and truly under her belt and has a strong artistic track record behind her. Shortlisted in 2012 for the Arc National Drawing Prize (Snail Civilisation), Sarah has also won the People’s Choice Awards and Inaugural Prize (Eltham Community Gallery) 2011, and was highly commended in the Illustrators Australian & NZ Awards (2015). She won the 1st Prize in the Fairfield Art4All show in 2016. She has illustrated the following popular children’s books: Hare ’n There (Trellech Publishing 2017), The Hokey Pokey (Scholastic Australia 2013 – now in its 3rd edition.) and Barnowlby Bubbles (Little Steps Publishing 2010).spoken Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

This is a story for young and old alike, for who had heard of pirates in the southern waters of Australia? The pirate Benito actually existed, and in fact terrorised the Spanish shipping lanes loaded with treasure plundered from the Incas and Aztecs of South America. History has it, that hunted and driven South trying to elude capture, he buried some of his treasure near Queenscliffe in Victoria, and perhaps later in the Franklin River near Wilsons Promontory. Numerous, well organised parties have searched for the treasure, but so far without success. Live the tale of this cut‐throat through the fabulous images of this gifted cartoonist.

Alan Pearson, an Art teacher and cartoonist lived in South Gippsland for 30 years, and is a person whose love of fishing and sailing saw him develop a deep affection for life in and around Wilsons Promontory and the Nooramunga Inlet in South Gippsland. He has also produced a number of books and cartoons about the legends and places that make South Gippsland so vibrant and interesting. The legend of Benito inspired him to research the subject …. an interest that was fuelled when a teacher at a story writing and cartooning workshop confided in him that her husband had actually been a member of a team that had searched for the treasure.

The Harriet Clare series is unique in newly independent children's fiction. In the fifth instalment of this popular series, Mystery Dare, join Harriet as she heads off on a family holiday! This is a fun, Scooby-Doo-mystery type title with new Harriet laugh-out-loud moments. In previous titles she gets anxious, doesn't practise her ballet, gets worried at giving speeches and finds it hard to make friends easily. Harriet has had a learning curve though and is more together in this title, showing a Harriet that is growing up. A visual feast and explosion of fun, the Harriet Clare books draw in even the most reluctant of readers with charming illustrations, illustrated text and sketching activities. Harriet also encourages problem-solving, self-understanding and empathy in the reader.

The Harriet Clare series is unique in newly independent children's fiction. In the sixth instalment of this popular series, Christmas Fair, join Harriet as she spends the holiday season with all her besties! Here's a little taste from your friend Harriet: OH. MY. GOSH. I love Christmastime sooo, sooo much! I wish it was Christmas Eve right this very minute! NO! NO! NO! NO! Actually, I don't wish this. Oh, well, maybe I do. No, I don't! OH! I might. ARRRRGH! The thing is, I want Christmas Eve to come but I don't want it to be over! So, I want it but I don't want it! Do you ever feel like that? I do all the time for everything that's worth looking forward to - birthdays, sleepovers, decorating the Christmas tree even! Ours looks so pretty in the front window of the lounge room tonight, though. ECLARE and I decorated it last night and now it's all over. SEE what I mean!
