Words from the Wise
September 2016 When Valentino Rossi (Moto GP legend) is interviewed he talks about “the fight” and then “the battle” and as I think highly of “The Doctor” I preface these words with a thought of him. My work associates take up the battle every day; it is the same as the battle you face on a continuous basis. Whether it is the battle to read more in the time we can steal from our day job, or whether it is to be more consumer facing, or to not stock the same books the DDS’s stock. It is a battle; and there is how to get value from all of the associated “utlilty” costs of running a business. This is at a time when consumers rule to such a degree, never has there been so much choice for booksellers to command gatekeeper activity over book stocks, and never has it been so easy for a consumer to choose their buying methodology. Some “fight”, or “battle” techniques. Differentiation choices. August 12 is World Elephant Day, not something the DDS next door will accomodate. How can I boost my reading this week? Why wait for physical reading copies when the iPad screen is so simple to use; so many early drafts of books are available as pdf's. Offensive for print purists - but it works for me. Do you take direct onix feeds from suppliers? We have an ever growing list of recipients as well as those that come via our ftp site. This is a great way to build your catalogue of Australian authored works. Do you have a free newspaper service? Those Broadsheets and Tabloids are being usurped by mobile: so ask if you can about a periodic free distribution of a PRINT newspaper.(I was at the Caltex at Canberra airport this morning and was offered a copy of the Daily Telegraph with my fuel purchase.) List building. Which authors were born in your consumer catchment zone – celebrate their birth date, or “on this day” What major crime has been committed in your area and there is a PRINT book on the subject. Which authors have you encouraged to visit your store recently? How do I utilise an ebook catalogue? You will be eagerly awIting this one! It is in the WIP file.
Continuing I read with interest the words from Hiroshi Sogo in Publishing Perspectives last week and absorbed some of his industry views (Porter Anderson introduces the piece by saying the last time Hiroshi was heard was in 2014) http://publishingperspectives.com/2016/06/kinokuniyashiroshi-sogo-bookselling-challenges-japan/#.V3M88Pl97IU “If allowed, heavy discounting will destroy market order, and idiotic populism will come to reign where popular titles and genres will sell at lower price points while less popular genres-academic and academic, for example will be sold more expensively” This got me thinking that with the race to the bottom in terms of how we display our purchasing habits why are we dissimilar when it comes to books. Especially backlist. The relationship between rock low selling prices of key font list titles only makes me think that the pricing of backlist is an anathema. I suppose we have several thousand backlist titles where we have not tampered with the selling price for some years: what would happen to demand if we unilaterally dropped the selling prices to a flat $19.99 for every title older than 18 months? Would this encourage shops to stock a wider range for casual shoppers? Would the consumption via the online sites increase enough to balance the net profit back to our publishers? Or a we just following the trend like milk to reduce receipts to the point where animal created milk and its associated costs are replaced by machine made milk - in which case the machines are always cheaper outside Australia? Finally I have been really fortunate to have wandered around some great bookshops recently. If you are in Seattle (please) have a look at the Elliot Bay Book Company (see image below). What a rich store, a powerhouse of choice and a place I would love to carry my sales rep selling bag into. I also visited the new Dymocks stores in Chadstone and Eastland and was impressed with the consumer focussed clean and clear layout which is a clue to where those Dymocks refits would go in the future. But! I was most impressed by the new Robinsons Bookshop at Eastland (Victoria). Please take the trip along the Maroondah Highway and have a look and tell me what you think – I like it. Thanks DJ

Midnight Oil are one of the most 'Australian' rock bands this country has produced. Born from the Australian pub rock scene that gave us AC/DC, Cold Chisel and INXS, the Oils were able to break out of that scene without compromising themselves in any way. Indeed, their breakthrough overseas record was the most Australian album they made. But it wasn't just the subject matter that made them fiercely Australian; it was their stubborn independence, and their refusal to play the rock'n'roll game and respect its rules and masters. But more than any of this is the adrenalin rush of an Oils show. Performances so intense that witnesses swore they had seen the greatest Oils gig ever! Such was the belief that something so powerful could surely not take place regularly. When they took this overseas, audiences could often not understand a word they were saying, but musically they recognised a common language: powerful, unadulterated live performances. There is no band whose live shows are spoken of with the same awe as the Oils.
Author Information Michael Lawrence first saw Midnight Oil in 1980 when they were opening for The Angels. It was the last time they opened for anyone. A musician himself, Michael was blown away with the uniquely complex musical elements of the band and the Australian character of all they did. He saw them many more times and was always amazed at the incredible commitment they brought to every performance and the uncompromising stance they maintained. Whilst much has been written about Midnight Oil through the years, the majority has been about the political aspect, ignoring the unforgettable power and commitment they put into every performance, the complexity of the music and the musicality of every member of the band. As Michael has found while researching The Power and the Passion, Midnight Oil took what he saw in 1980, improved on it and took it to the world without compromising that Australian character. On their first North American tour, The Montreal Gazette’s Mark LePage witnessed their show: “…they hit Montreal like an 18-wheeler on jet fuel. Several hundred jaws remained dropped for the first four songs. Nobody who attended has ever forgotten.” Michael has listened to hundreds of recordings and trawled through decades of interviews, reviews and articles on the band from more than a dozen countries. He has met most of the band members, who have given the project their blessing. Michael is the author of two books about the iconic Australian band, Cold Chisel: Showtime and Wild Colonial Boys also published by Melbourne Books. These books became the history that the band themselves refer to and received enthusiastic reviews Michael works as a school teacher ( English & music) in Geelong, Victora where he resides with his wife and two children.

Imagine being the best tennis player in the world, a hero in your own country through your exploits in the Davis Cup and the Grand Slam tournaments. You decide to turn professional, which means you are ineligible for all those events, so you find that at 23 or 24 years of age you... are to a certain extent a forgotten commodity. To most modern‐day tennis fans, it is impossible to believe that until the late 1960s, professional tennis players ‐ that is, those who played openly for money ‐ were banned from competing in the world's major tournaments. Before this time the great contests such as the Davis Cup, Wimbledon and the national Championships were exclusive to so‐called amateurs. Amateur tennis players were meant to compete only for glory. Though this division arose soon after the turn of the twentieth century, by the 1930s the 'Pro Tour' was entrenched, and endured for another forty years. In The Pros: The Forgotten Heroes of Tennis, author Peter Underwood explains why professional players were forced into what was often called a 'travelling circus', where these sporting outcasts played each other during long and rather tatty tours taking them all over the world. Focussing on the eight champions who dominated the Pro Era ‐ beginning in 1930 with the ultimately tragic figure of Big Bill Tilden ‐ the book follows each Pro Champion until the era's end in 1968 with Rod The Rocket Laver, great and young enough to dominate the new Open Era. Underwood's book is more than just history: his colourful depictions of ruthless battles among the pros for prize money and status of top dog, offer unique insight into the virtuoso's journey towards mastery of their craft, and the fascinating intersection between personality, background and individual style.
Author Information Peter Underwood lives mainly in the city of his birth, Perth, Western Australia, and has spent most of his professional life as a medical doctor and academic. He has worked in primary care medicine in metropolitan and remote Australia, and worked and travelled in many overseas countries. He has also always been a writer and broadcaster. The author of numerous scientific articles, he now divides his time between medical education, growing fine wool, activism in the environmental and peace movements, writing poetry and non‐fiction, and sharing time and travel with family and grandchildren. A passionate student of tennis, he has played and studied the game since childhood. The Pros is his first general non‐fiction book.

In 1853, a young American arrived in the new colony of Victoria hoping to make his fortune from the world's greatest gold rush. He soon realised where the real money was to be made, and established a coach company that would eventually carry his name into every household in the land: Cobb & Co. But Freeman Cobb himself was long gone by the time the company bearing his name became an Australian legend. Wild Ride is the story of two extraordinary men, James Rutherford and Frank Whitney, who along with their business partners took Freeman Cobb's humble company and made it into an Australian legend. These were pioneers, carving a path through otherwise impassable terrain, settling unsettled land, enduring bushrangers and terrible accidents, and making their fortunes. The Rutherford and Whitney families became two of the most significant of their era, unrivalled in their influence and, finally, vicious in their falling out. Written with unprecedented access to these families' letters and diaries, Wild Ride reveals the Cobb & Co story in all its drama, conflict and tragedy. It is the compelling and human story of Australia's first great company and the people who made it an icon. A lively, popular history with broad appeal, Wild Ride is full of colourful detail and anecdotes'

Try for a moment to imagine what it must have been like to face the horrors of the trenches during WWI, the mud, the blood, the rats, the lice and the constant fear of death. Now try to imagine being there at the age of 16. All I See Is Mud is the story of Private Stan Dunkley as we follow his journey from Sydney to the battlefields of France and Belgium in the latter stages of the Great War. He joined up to escape his horrible home life only to find himself trapped in the cauldron of war through the Battle of Hangard Wood, the German offensives of March 1918 and the crippling effects of a European winter. As the front line thawed the Allies went on the offensive in August 1918 leading to the famous attack on Mont St Quentin and finally to the Battle for the Beauvoir Line...Stan was in the thick of it while friends and comrades fell around him until he too was forced to confront his mortality. Based on actual events, diary notes and letters, All I See Is Mud is a confronting story of one soldier's struggle against a determined enemy and his own inadequacies. This story puts you on the front line during a conflict that literally changed the power structure of the world at a cost of 17 million lives. 100 years on, World War I is still tearing at the very fabric of our existence. By popular demand All I See Is Mud has been put on paper after its success as an audio release (As heard on ABC Radio)

Tasmania's rise and rise as a tourist destination makes the island an ideal location for the cashed‐up international polo set, jetting in from Europe, Buenos Aires, Shanghai and LA for their late summer carnival and relaxathon in the world's latest clean‐green hotspot. They play fiercely and party hard at the swish Polo Palace, built near beautiful beaches through the largesse of an island‐loving, polo‐mad billionaire Bahraini businessman. So when this idyll is gruesomely interrupted by the murder of Sebastian Wicken, a dashing and wealthy Englishman famous for wielding his stick and ball, Pufferfish, aka seasoned Detective Inspector Franz Heineken of the Tasmanian Police Force, is called to investigate. And investigate he does. For starters, what possible relationship could there be between this visiting bludgeoned aristocrat and Tassie's worst‐ of‐the‐worst career villain, psychopathic Morgan Murger? What ghastly behaviour unites them in blood? Pufferfish and his offsiders Rafe and Faye, work double time to try and fathom who did what to whom, and why ‐ while keeping an antsy tourist industry at bay ‐ but then the strange intrusion of a quavery voice from rural England, being Sebastian's aunt Eugenie, deepens the mystery.

It’s a diary, a daily planner, a trustworthy companion, a confidante and a tool for transformation and growth. Enriching the lives of many since 2008. To Be Grateful For "What Is" Has Been My Personal Path To Freedom. When we stop to allow and fully accept the reality of this current moment ‐ NOW ‐ a calmness is revealed and available to us. With this diary, we are hoping for you also, to find the inspiration to stop, smell the roses, and take stock of what is truly important, in a world that appears to be turning in an ever increasing pace. Take a moment each day to breathe and ask yourself the following questions... What is it that you are currently grateful for? What is good? What is working and what is valuable? In your daily planner you will notice a space at the beginning of each day to journal these thoughts. You will be amazed at how this very simple practice and commitment will expand for you what is good and what is true! There is an old saying "where your attention goes, Energy flows". It takes just 5 minutes and the positive effects will last a lifetime...Your lifetime. We wish you an abundant and evolutionary year and would love to hear about your experiences and miracles you will inevitably encounter.

Inspired by real events, this novel with fictional characters, explores the human consequences for those caught up in the rapid transformation of a widely respected Australian corporation. The architect of sweeping change is Clint Mason, the formidable chief executive of the newly privatised Telco One, recruited from New York. Jennifer, a tenacious board member, comes to confront Clint about the way he interacts with his staff, the media, and government. Little did former financial counsellors, Max and Paul, realise how radically their lives would change after they joined Telco One’s consumer division. And their respective partners, Karen and Nicole, also become embroiled in a new hothouse lifestyle as they confront complicated professional and personal choices. Journalists are gunning for their ‘cowboy’ Clint as he relentlessly imposes his new strategies. Is he a cultural misfit, a necessary agent of change, or a true visionary? Grand Intentions is an enthralling novel that draws upon life in the Australian telecommunications industry as an allegory that links corporate upheaval to its impacts on individuals, and asks what this means for Australia.
Author Information Trevor Barr is one of Australia’s best known writers and commentators on Australia’s media and telecommunications. He came to university life after a career in commercial publishing as Publishing Director of Cheshire Publishing, and was subsequently employed by the Commission for the Future and Ericsson Australia. He has been a national media commentator, notably on ABC Radio, AM and PM, presenting regular spots with Terry Lane as well as his television appearances on Four Corners and the 7.30 Report. He is the author of four books published by Penguin, Allen & Unwin, Rigby and Oxford University Press. In 2007 he was awarded the Charles Todd Medal for ‘Communicator of the Year’ presented by the Australian Telecommunications User Group. He was the Consumer Co-Chair of the Telstra Consumer Consultative Council (TCCC), an advisory body to Telstra, for six years until 2008. He is now an Emeritus Professor at Swinburne University in Melbourne.

ANZAC ‐ A symbol for gallantry, mateship and sacrifice which is embedded in the national psyche. Told through the eyes of an Original from the Gallipoli campaign, this story will take you ashore on that first day in late April, will introduce you to the uncensored realities of defending that precipitous, narrow strip of coastline, will lead you across the bloody ridge that was Lone Pine and will see you amongst the last to leave The Peninsula. Lest we forget? We must never forget.
Author Information Bill Needham is a retired high school teacher who has a long held interest in World War 1. In 2010 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to education and preservation of Australian military history. He resides in rural NSW. My Normal Life: Bound is a collection of thirty stories from people with disabilities talking about disability. These thoroughly engaging stories ‐ told by people who are not victims nor heroes succeeding against all odds ‐ will challenge your perception of disability and what it is to have a normal life. As a teacher of some twenty odd years, Gaynor Spriggs felt that she had a reasonably good understanding of disability, having in that time encountered a range of students with special needs. However, while interviewing people for My Normal Life: Bound, she made the startling discovery that her understanding was at best superficial. The everyday people in this book each have their own particular set of challenges that we would traditionally label as 'disabled'. What becomes very clear is that each person is more than the sum of their challenges and that their attitude to life can have everything ‐ or nothing ‐ to do with their disability. Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly. ‐ Mortisha Addams

Have you ever needed to do something that made you nervous; even thinking about doing? Kids do all the time. Going to bed, weathering through storms, going to school, speaking in class, making a new friend and so on. Children are expected to just get on with it! What they need is to find their BRAVE! Something that is inside of them but they just can't find. The much‐loved characters of Loppy and Curly are back to teach kids how to find their BRAVE. Author Information Lynn Jenkins is an experienced and practicing clinical psychologist, author and mum of three. In addition to writing Brave, Lynn has written the first title in the series, Lessons of a LAC, and has three more upcoming titles in the same series. She has written two non-fiction titles: Best Start and School Start. Lynn is passionate about early intervention, and it is the angle all her books take. She is excitedly waiting the publication of her picture book on mindfulness coming out in 2017. Illustrator Information Kirrili Lonergan is a children’s book illustrator and mother of four. She was thrilled to illustrate Brave as well as the first book in the series – Lessons of a LAC – as she has a great understanding of the need for such books through her many years working with children in her role as a pediatric nurse and background in early childhood. Her main illustrating passion is children’s picture books as reflected in her role as vice president of the CBCA Newcastle subbranch. Brave was illustrated using mixed media, a combination of gouache, ink and pastels.

Mimi is excited ‐ she is going to be getting a pony! But before she can meet Cody and start riding him, she has a lot to prepare to prepare and learn.
Author Information Michelle is an Australian children’s author from West Gippsland. Her first book, Suki and the Seedling, was published through Little Steps in 2014. She has also published twelve books through Rowanvale Books in the UK, including four books in her popular, award-winning Xalien the Purple Alien series. Michelle has two main passions in life: writing and horses. She began writing as a teenager and has continued to write ever since. Michelle got her first horse when she was 18 and fell in love with them straight away. She loves competing in dressage competitions and the occasional show. Five years ago, she bought a lovely two-and-a-half year old Welsh pony of cob type, whom she named Cody. Cody was broken in and then Michelle began the task of training him. She had no idea he would be such a wonderful dressage pony, placing first in his first dressage competition. He has since gone on to be very successful in his career as a dressage pony. Michelle decided to combine her passions and write a story about her pony and the journey they have been on so far. She hopes to publish more books about Cody the Pony in the future.
Illustrator Information
In 1991, Kyiv, Ukraine, there was born a young illustrator of children books. Her name was Naya. She spent her childhood years on the edge of forest in a small wooden house, being surrounded by a loving family and tenants of the wood. One of her favourite stories was Peter Pan, about the boy that never grew up. Just like Peter, Naya dreamed of staying a child as long as possible, to be able to spend more time in the world of fairies, trolls and other magical creatures. Even though staying a child forever was not going to happen, Naya found a way to keep the fairytale world close to her, and became an illustrator of children’s books. Being all grown up now, Naya still puts a little bit of magic in each and every illustration she creates. Aside from illustrating books for children, Naya makes onsite exhibitions in collaboration with exceptional and talented illustrators, takes part in various art projects and teaches children the art of drawing. A patterned and vibrant alphabet book of creatures old, new and legendary, from artist Karen Allen.
Author Information Karen Allen was born in Cape Town, South Africa, living under the shadow of the beautiful Table Mountain. She and her family left for Australia in the late 1970s. She can still distinctly remember as a child, driving home from the Melbourne airport, thinking how different the colour and the light was in this new flat land her father had brought them to. Growing up, Karen always and only wanted to be an artist … there was a flicker of being a veterinarian but only a flicker. She studied multidisciplinary fine arts at university and after graduating, worked as a commission-based artist for over a decade. When children came along, life took over and she stopped painting for seven years. Karen has worked in a variety of jobs, ranging from teaching to aged care. Just after turning forty, she looked at her life (which was lovely, by the way) and said, ‘What happened to that girl who always and only wanted to be an artist?’ She decided to devote herself back to her art, and has never looked back. Karen has always loved animals, but being in the presence of children she was reengaged with them and spent many a day at the Melbourne Zoo. One day she started drawing portraits of animals, experimenting with patterns as a background. In a spur of the moment she decided to put the pattern inside the animal, just to see. This started an obsession with patterning and sparked an idea for a book. All Karen’s illustrations are drawn by hand, using fine liners and watercolours. Karen lives in Bayside, Melbourne and does sometimes think she lives in a zoo — with four children, a husband, and a Labrador named Buddy.

There's a buzz in the rainforest after the animals start seeing new signs about the cassowary. But why is the cassowary so important? Join the rainforest animals as they search for the cassowary and hear his special song about his gift to the forest...
Author Information Pam Skadins was born in Brisbane, and has worked as an early childhood teacher for many years. She was inspired to write her first children’s picture book, The Cassowary’s Gift, following a trip to the Daintree region in North Queensland in 2012. While she was there, she learned about the endangered status of the cassowary, and how the threats to the bird are ongoing. Through the book and accompanying song, she has sought to build on young children’s natural curiosity and wonder, to help them understand the importance of the cassowary in the rainforest's ecosystem. Besides an interest in the natural world, Pam enjoys reading and travel. She has two daughters.

The animals in this book were first introduced by the author in her fantasy series. Many school teachers, librarians, and parents have requested books for younger children with stories and illustrations of the animals. One non‐fiction picture book, featuring all of the animals from the fantasy series has been published. This is the first book in a series of picture books that will feature two of the animals interacting, as they would have in the wild. This one features the marsupial lion and the diprotodon. More than 50,000 years ago, Dippy the Diprotodon (di‐prot‐o‐don) danced through the dense forest heading for his breakfast of fresh eucalyptus leaves. What he didn't know was that right behind him, stalking him, was a marsupial lion wanting to make Dippy his breakfast. Who will win this battle? Author Information Elaine Ouston has a Master of Letters in Creative Writing. She teaches writing to adults, and edits for other authors. She has four published books. They include a chapter book, Lost in a Strange Land, and a picture book called The Lost Shoes. Two books in The Mystery of Nida Valley have been released and she is working on the third. She is available for book signings and author talks about her books and the animals, or for writing workshops for adults or children. Her sessions are interactive, educational and engaging. She is used to talking to groups and modifies her talk to suit the various age groups.
